The simple life

A long time ago, I was sitting in the waiting area in an East Coast basketball office. That was when I learned that, at the time, the head coach had a secretary who had a secretary who had a receptionist.

I’m reminded of that during the NCAA Tournament while watching televised sideline shots of head coaches who look like CEOs. And I’m reminded of that while wandering around UH.

UH does indeed run a down-to-earth program. The football office still does not have a full-time secretary, instead using three student workers. That means coaches make their own coffee, answer their own calls, even try to figure out how to reload the printer. During one of the spring practices, head coach Greg McMackin demonstrated blocking techniques to the young offensive linemen.

For the women’s volleyball program, 1,000-plus victories could not be parlayed into a secretary, not even a student worker. When the coaches were relocated for the office renovations, Dave Shoji found himself in a room where he often could not receive cell-phone reception.

The coaches of the women’s basketball team had to work through weeks of hearing the THUMP-THUMP-THUMP of construction outside their makeshift offices.

Softball coach Bob Coolen conducts his post-game interviews between re-organizing the dugout and helping the grounds crew. He pitches batting practice. During the offseason,he often came in on weekends to help clean the Lower Campus.

And sneak into a men’s basketball practice. Gib Arnold is the sixth man.

Those are reminders of life of a non-BCS program.

    We are lucky to have coaches that will work hard to help keep costs down.

  2. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:15 am

    And yet…. how long was that travel list to the Sugar Bowl? 😯 🙄

    Nice synopsis ST. 😀

  3. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:16 am

    d1 – Did you have VCU? 😯

  4. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:17 am

    c’est la vie

    The have’s vs. the havenot’s.

  5. whitey March 27, 2011 9:18 am

    good morning tsaikos

  6. Pomai March 27, 2011 9:19 am

    #2 good one brew808 and I doubt things have changed that much in that regard.

  7. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:20 am

    Easy for people to say “think big”… but reality of lack of funds says otherwise.

    Let me check these lottery tickets…

  8. whitey March 27, 2011 9:20 am

    when i was in school back many many many moons (same as ralph), the athletic dept had only 1 sec, no other helper. and the fb team finally beat oklahoma after 33 yrs.

  9. Pomai March 27, 2011 9:21 am

    I wonder what would happen if they put all of UH workers on a year to year contract based on performance?

  10. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:22 am

    ST… that’s yet another fine example to cite when being compared with these BCS schools! It goes farther than just lack of soap in the dispensers!

  11. whitey March 27, 2011 9:24 am

    we had 1 hd trainer and 3 apprentice trainers for the entire athletic dept. had only 3 people responsible for all the athletic equipement and training clothes. also had the nation’s #1 total offense leader in fb. sounds familiar????

  12. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:24 am

    I can almost hear the jokes already…

    “How many UH coaches does it take to reload a printer?”

  13. whitey March 27, 2011 9:26 am

    and it had a fb team that had only 30 players and went 7-3 for the season.

  14. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:27 am

    Still, the coaches are lucky to have jobs. Otherwise, they might have found themselves among the thousands who applied for jobs at Pearl Harbor Shipyard…

  15. madeinhawaii March 27, 2011 9:30 am

    Michigan Warrior…

    The answer is 9. It takes that many to find the student manager to turn it on in the first place!

    Morning!

  16. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:30 am

    Tsaikos have shown how banding together, people can make a difference. Would the local malls be willing to set up Booster Booths? Or would it be possible to have several tables set up to represent the various sports that have booster clubs to solicit membership and outright donations?

    Go to the public instead of trying to get them to come to us.

  17. whitey March 27, 2011 9:30 am

    absolutely yes, it is nice or a luxury to have all the perks, but dreaming and reality are two different horses. but using your own god given senses will always produce winners.

  18. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:30 am

    the coach I admire most is Cal Lee. He’s quiet but effective. Hard to believe he was the top banana at St. Louis.

  19. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:30 am

    MIH… that’s IF it’s working too!!!

  20. madeinhawaii March 27, 2011 9:32 am

    The student manager or the copier?

  21. Da Punchbowl Kid March 27, 2011 9:33 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    TopTwenny, Travellin’ Tsing Tao Tom!

    The post makes us appreciate our coaches even more! Thanks to all of them,

    Mr. Tsai –

    Just for gigles, do you know of any WAC or Mounatin West schools in similar predicaments when it comes to staffing/funding for their athletics department?

  22. madeinhawaii March 27, 2011 9:35 am

    The student manager will go up to front of the line, look at the machine, and say….

    ” Uhm… That’s the fax machine. The copier is on that side.”

  23. Sunday Thoughts March 27, 2011 9:35 am

    UH runs a down-to-earth athletic program because they have no other choice.

  24. Slugger March 27, 2011 9:36 am

    I imagine there are many more schools with programs like our’s than that of the big monied schools. Our coaches are approachable. Good people.

  25. whitey March 27, 2011 9:36 am

    gigi, i don’t think your logic of “lucky they (coaches) have a job” is correct and it is more of an insult to them. they worked hard as students learning their trade and made a commitment to excel at coaching whereever it may be. they established their creditability and were selected to lead (or assist) the program. without establishing themselves, they would be looking for another job. so i wouldn’t say they are lucky to have a job, but they have purseued their life dream with personal sacrifices and learning and how are able to continue their dream.

  26. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:37 am

    DPK… got that right!!

    #20… MIH… I knew I should have specified before I hit [ENTER]

  27. Sunday Thoughts March 27, 2011 9:37 am

    Jim Leahey was seen reading brochures from AARP.

  28. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:38 am

    yeah, whitey, you’re right. I stand corrected.

  29. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:39 am

    #24… Slugger… got that right too! I love that our coaches are “good” people! They add to our joy as fans…

  30. whitey March 27, 2011 9:40 am

    how=now

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid March 27, 2011 9:41 am

    27 –

    As he should. AARP has some great stuff for older folks. It doesn’t mean that Big Daddy’s retiring yet.

  32. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:41 am

    brown=cow

  33. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 9:42 am

  34. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:43 am

    #30 – whitey – brown-cow? 🙄 🙂 😀

  35. whitey March 27, 2011 9:44 am

    as someone said, all of the coaches at UH are very nice and approachable. try doing that at one of the “big time” schools coaches. most are aloof and would totally ignore you. yes, there are sides that is neva mentioned, but we lucky we live hawaii.

  36. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:44 am

    Michigan Warrior – must be the diff in time zones….. 😆

  37. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 9:46 am

    Sunday Thoughts:

    True that about the situation.

    Would money change that? I’m not so sure. This is still Hawaii.

    A true test of character is that after an event, who stays to clean up?

  38. whitey March 27, 2011 9:46 am

    mw and brew, hahahahahahahahaaaa. good morning to both of you

  39. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 9:47 am

    Does AARP get good discounts because older people are frequent shoppers or because businesses want them to become frequent shoppers?

  40. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:48 am

    …state workers… on overtime? 🙄

  41. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 9:48 am

    They want them to spend before they die

  42. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:48 am

  43. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:50 am

    #41 – You’re sick! (I was thinking the same thing…..) 🙄 😀 😆

  44. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:51 am

    maybe I should open the mail from AARP for a change just to see what they are up to. I usually just toss it without opening…

  45. whitey March 27, 2011 9:51 am

    been non functional for a few days, but one of the highlights during that time was ohio state getting beat by kentucky. the elite (ohio state) who cheats at most of their sports, have no guts to travel to play games more than 200 miles from home, who has a president whose mouth is like the horse’s ass and a fb coach who lies, like we say when growing in the plantation, good for you!!!!!!

  46. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 9:51 am

    I guess my original point was that take away the suits and secretaries, the bottom line is a coach should be no different from the high school coach in sweats with a whistle in his mouth.

    Example: I used to go to a brilliant CPA. But then business became too good, so he started to use casual workers and students to prepare the work, then he would double-check it. Not the same.

  47. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:52 am

    Yesterday it was AFLAC. Today it is AARP. What tomorrow – AAPLE, then aardvark? 😆

  48. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:53 am

    ST,

    use Turbo Tax. That’s what hubby uses.

  49. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 9:54 am

    Rasu:

    Brutal, but good point.

    That’s why they don’t give reverse mortgages to 35-year-olds.

    You have to be knock-knock-knockin’ on the Grim Reaper’s doorstep to be pre-approved.

  50. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 9:55 am

    Gigi:

    Your hubby is a CPA, isn’t he?

  51. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:55 am

    nah, all you have to be is 62 yrs old —– a piece of cake! — a walk in the park!

  52. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 9:55 am

    Hmm, dog seems to alive, sorta breathing

    Interesting Note

    Last week we received a credit card with a limit of $7500.

    under the name “Shadow Collins” ,well Shadow is still a minor at 15 1/2

    and not to mention a dog.

    Will bring CC to Genji’s, drinks on Shadow if the card passes

  53. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:56 am

    nope hubby is not a CPA, tho he passed the CPA exam. Does not qualify b/c he has no experience in a CPA firm.

    he is just an accountant with an MBA.

  54. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 9:57 am

    ST,

    my elder daughter, who is a h.s. math teacher, uses TurboTax. No need to be a CPA.

  55. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 9:58 am

    At least somebody in the family is credit worthy….. 😆

  56. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 9:59 am

    I thought all of those easy-credit plans were a thing of that past?

    Wasn’t that the cause of the Crash of 2008?

  57. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:01 am

    haha! how will Shadow sign his charge slip? With a paw?

  58. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:02 am

    Couple of weeks ago, I bought glasses. As I’m being fitted, the worker said: “You can use a payment plan. You’re already approved for our credit card.”

    And I’m thinking: You’re giving me credit based on my HMSA card?

  59. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:03 am

    GiGi,

    turbo tax is great for the unwashed masses.

    some of us need the CPAs to sort out our

    bonds, stocks, leveraged buyouts, revolving properties, underage h@@kers,

    bribes, equaties, staffing costs, maintanence of private aircraft, depreciation of

    classic automobiles and dog food

  60. Stretch March 27, 2011 10:06 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    I respect people who are willing to do things for themselves rather than just sit there and expect others to do it for them since they are “entitled” to it.

  61. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:06 am

    Yes, private aircraft is a tricky matter.

    Then again, I work for a newspaper. I have paper planes.

  62. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:06 am

    Rasu,

    Okay, we are members of the unwashed masses, though I do try to take a shower at least 3 times a week…

  63. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:06 am

    In oda words…. all the stuff he’s hiding from the Mrs. 😆

  64. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:07 am

    Brew

    yup I rcvd an offer for a cc from Orchid, with a $300 limit

    and the dog gets a card worth 25X more

    So Sad

  65. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:07 am

    If I said it as well as Stretch, I could have saved myself from writing that post.

  66. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:08 am

    ST,

    you need an engineering degree to write like Stretch.

  67. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:09 am

    GiGi,

    U bathe 3x a week?

    Forget about yestersdays post, I just want Avis to hug and kiss me!

  68. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:09 am

    I wonder what the Mrs. is hiding from him?

  69. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:10 am

    Stretch has plenty of practice being succinct – using his little white board! 😆

  70. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:10 am

    Stretch=Not unwashed

  71. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:10 am

    Rasu,

    I knew you would change your mind!

  72. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:11 am

    Stretch elevates his game for indoor sports.

  73. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:12 am

    Stretch,

    do you STILL use your white board at the games???

  74. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:13 am

    Re:69

    I think he is 6’2, 35, blond hair, blue eyes and a pilot

    for a major airline.

    I also think the dogs like him better

  75. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:15 am

    Being a pilot is cool.

    You get to travel. Cut in front of others at security. And make announcements during the crucial scenes of the in-flight movie.

  76. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:16 am

    Well GiGi,

    You only bathe three time a week at most, wash your clothes once a

    week in seven separate loads and play sweaty WII bowling all day!

    Who wants a hug!

  77. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:16 am

    …. And if you oversleep, you can call in, and the somebody will announce: The flight is being delayed because of (mumble, mumble) trouble …”

  78. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 10:16 am

    #66… ST… but look at the amount of activity here, already, in just over an hour!

  79. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:17 am

    It’s also interesting that Brew, Rasu and Michigan Warrior are posting from out of state.

  80. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:18 am

    We are? 😯

  81. Stretch March 27, 2011 10:19 am

    gigi – Engineers use terrible English and can’t spell and I don’t use the whiteboard anymore.

  82. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:19 am

    Rasu,

    that’s okay. You couldn’t afford me anyway, as I charge a lot. lol

  83. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:19 am

    Brew:

    Since I’m here in Maine …

  84. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:20 am

    Stretch,

    If that is so, then you are in the wrong profession!

    Switch to journalism.

  85. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 10:20 am

    #61… Stretch… I wonder if BCS schools have “restroom attendants”?

  86. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:21 am

    Working as a travel agent in LV, with our clients on the plane one NorthWest departure was delayed over thirty minutes as we waited fo a co-pilot to show up.

    He finaly showed up clutching a Port O Sub sandwich in one hand and a Starbucks frapachino in the other.

  87. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 10:21 am

    Out of mind… out of body…

  88. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:21 am

    ST,

    actually, I am retired!

    I am getting rich off Social Security.

  89. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:22 am

    No wonder you said SS will run out.

    ummm, you’re 65

    need a new proffesion

  91. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:23 am

  92. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:23 am

    You’re welcome. 😈

  93. Michigan Warrior March 27, 2011 10:23 am

    hahaha! You guys crack me up!

  94. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:24 am

    ya know, it’s too bad that we bloggers cannot charge the S-A for our time and typing. all of this is for free.

  95. jm2375 March 27, 2011 10:25 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

    Nice story, ST!

    UH head coaches not yet eligible for AARP – Gib, Dana, Charlie Wade.

    Gigi – AARP eligibility is age 50. Somehow, they know… your application comes in the mail a few months before your birthday. Being a member gives you another discount option when booking hotels, etc online.

    Hope all of you over 50 have invested in long-term care insurance.

  96. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:25 am

    I remember in the old days, oh, about a year ago, when they would never re-open the doors to a plane after everyone has been settled. But twice during the football season, they opened the doors to allow in late passengers.

    Seems to happen on Hawaii-bound flights because there’s no risk of missing a connecting flight.

  97. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:25 am

    GiGi,

    I heard it was disability not social security.

    Didn’t you freak out and bite the head off a chicken at a petting zoo?

    if not my bad.

  98. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:26 am

    Guarantee…. Kansas is also going to MISS it’s flight home! 🙄 😈 🙄

  99. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:27 am

    Gigi:

    Uh, you realize that the S-A doesn’t charge you for online service, either.

    I also don’t get paid for the blog.

  100. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:28 am

    Rasu,

    it was not a chicken, it was an ostrich.

    get your facts straight.

  101. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:28 am

    1 … and done.

  102. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:28 am

    jm9877 – how long ago did you get your AARP membership offer? 😆

  103. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:29 am

    ah well, the best things in life are free…

    who said dat?

  104. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:29 am

    I have Aflac.

    Saw Gilbert Godfreid on the comedy chanel

    doing the Donald Trump roast

    Not so funny anymore

  105. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:29 am

    Does an ostrich taste like chicken?

  106. gigi-hawaii March 27, 2011 10:30 am

    jm,

    okay, you have convinced me to open the next AARP envelope.

  107. jm2375 March 27, 2011 10:30 am

    #73 – only 4 more games this season to experience Stretch and the other conversationalist, A-joe (plus PP and the Screechers). You must see & hear it to believe it!! 😆

  108. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:30 am

    Jayhawks will LOSE their baggage too! 😈

  109. βρεω808 March 27, 2011 10:31 am

    How many of you had Butler and VCU? 🙄 😯 🙂

  110. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:32 am

    Jm:

    UH still can host.

  111. madeinhawaii March 27, 2011 10:33 am

    Dunno about Ostrich, but Emu does.

  112. Hiflyer March 27, 2011 10:33 am

    Good morning all.

    VCU taking down Kansas.

  113. Old School Dave March 27, 2011 10:34 am

    I’ve on occassion on my visits to the Lower Campus seen Stan Sheriff Center manager Rich Sheriff and his staff outside pulling weeds and cleaning the outside of the arena. Have to say that the SSC, along with Rainbow Stadium seem to be maintained quite well. Does anyone know when they’ll be tearing down Klum Gym?

  114. RedZone March 27, 2011 10:36 am

    VCU wins 71 -61 over Kansas.

  115. jm2375 March 27, 2011 10:36 am

    brew – #103 – not yet, I still got a couple more years. 😀

    Last 4 days of employment at current company. Transfer on Friday. APRIL FOOLS! I wish. 😈

    No #1 seeds in the Final Four, but a #11 *and* a #8? 😀

    GO BOWS!!

    GO LADY HOYAS!!

  116. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:37 am

    Wonder how Jeff Capel feels?

  117. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:37 am

    in my minds eyes I can see….

    GiGi, muumuu flapping in the wind as she charges the innocent

    Ostrich, knocking down pre-schoolers and teen age aids alike

    in her mad attempt to bite the birds head off!

    Eyes red with fury, slippers flying off churning feet, teeth bared

    ready to sink into soft succulent ostrich flesh.

    From eight feet away, GiGi makes a Jordanesque leap onto the Avians back

    on one motion grabbing the birds neck and pulling it into her distorted mouth…..

    Oh the horror!

  118. RedZone March 27, 2011 10:38 am

    ST that would be one mega drumstick.

  119. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:38 am

    Old School Dave:

    I thought Klum was a goner. But a new floor was installed.

  120. jm2375 March 27, 2011 10:38 am

    ST – hosting a playoff game – any scenarios yet? Is UH gonna have to at least split with Univ of Spoiled Children? Inquiring minds wanna know…

  121. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:38 am

    Ostrich would be a cool sports nickname.

  122. whitey March 27, 2011 10:39 am

    hope the basebows can recover and take 1 game. congrats to the wahine sb on their start of wac play.

  123. Stephen Tsai March 27, 2011 10:39 am

    Emu would be OK, too, except it would sound like imu.

  124. Rasu Begasu March 27, 2011 10:41 am

    don’t know about Emus, but I ate a stir fried frog once.

    Read with interest, today’s sports page, on the All-State girls soccer team and much surprised that the “player of the year” signed with UH.

    Is this the beginning of a new trend where the top players will sign to play for Coach Nagamine? Hope so as I believe this is a FIRST for UH!

    Will UH scoccer do as well as the men’s basketball team with a new coach at the helm?

    Beware of the underdog!!!!!! Speed kills. VCU was much quicker than Kansas. All of their players are very good at handling the ball. I love their coach, Shaka Smart. He is big time. So is Brad Stevens of Butler. This is a good thing for Gib Arnold to use when recruiting. Get athletic players who are quick and who can handle the ball. You don’t have to have seven footers. A couple of 6’8″ to 6’9″ players will do as long as they are athletic and can jump.

    And notice the VCU players on the floor. They are all moving constantly, no standing around. I like that. Uptempo, controlled by the point guard Rodriquez. Hustle, hustle, hustle. Loose balls too. The ingridiments are there if Arnold can get the top flight point guard that we need.

    If you ask me, women’s soccer at UH is an afterthought. Frankly, I’d like to see UH have a men’s soccer team also and it would be a lot more exciting. That said, I hope the Wahine will have a better season this year than last. I’m just waiting for college football. Between now and the beginning of the football season I have a lot of time working in my yard and pulling weeds.

  198. Garret March 27, 2011 12:50 pm

    Nice breakdown on the increased revenue that Nevada will get by joining the MWC. Some of the benefits of MWC vs. WAC also apply to UH.

    By analyzing the most current data available, the Reno Gazette-Journal estimated that the Wolf Pack will make more than $2 million annually in the MWC than it did in the WAC.

    http://www.rgj.com/article/20110327/SPORTS06/103270349/1459/ENT14/Nevada-s-move-MWC-makes-sense-dollars

  199. Garret March 27, 2011 12:50 pm

    When UH plays in the Hawaii Bowl, the WAC gives UH $400k. When UH plays in the Hawaii Bowl as a MWC member, the MWC will give UH $450k…a nice $50k raise.

    The WAC’s stipend is $375,000, with the potential for $25,000 more if the team sells its allotment of tickets (which Nevada has done only once in six bowl games in its WAC era).

    The MWC’s minimum stipend is $450,000

    http://www.rgj.com/article/20110327/SPORTS06/103270349/1459/ENT14/Nevada-s-move-MWC-makes-sense-dollars

  200. Garret March 27, 2011 12:50 pm

    Because the MWC wins more nonconference games than the WAC, they get a bigger share of the BCS revenue split among the non-AQ conferences. That means UH will get $60k extra, plus if a MWC team gets into a BCS game then UH will get $700k more.

    Net gain: $60,000 (and the potential to make $700,000 if a MWC team makes a BCS game)

    There pretty known for Physical Therapist. Most of the Hawaii kids that do go go for one reason and that’s my industry.

  202. Garret March 27, 2011 12:56 pm

    VCU and Butler already earned $7.2 mil each for their conferences for this NCAA run and if they make the final they will make the maximum $8.64 mil for this NCAA tournament. For their conference members who have much smaller budgets than AQ-conference schools, that money will be a huge boost.

  203. Garret March 27, 2011 1:01 pm

    Butler’s head coach has been the head coach at Butler for 4 years. He has won ALL FOUR regular season conference titles, won their conference tournament 3 times, made the NCAA tournament every year, and made 2 Final Fours. I doubt that any head coach of a school not a member of the “Big Six” has ever done that before.

    The consecutive Final Four appearances has made Butler’s conference $14.4 mil…wow.

    classes and recreation leagues were played in klum as well as Wilt Chamberlain who

    lived in Hawaii at the time will come down and practice his volleyball game before

    heading out for beach volleyball that he played regularly around the Islands.

    LOVE Klum gym as I hate to see it demolish as GREAT players from all over played in this

    wonderful gymnasium !

    I remember growing up with Football being played by Loyola, San Francisco, St Mary’s, Santa Clara and Pepperdine, then along came TV and then cable. I also remember JC games with filled stadiums in So Cal.

    TV money really didn’t matter at the time that Santa Clara dropped football. Santa Clara specifically cited Title IX as a reason why they couldn’t afford to play football anymore. I talked with a number of people at Santa Clara about this, including Father Locatelli (who was in charge when the decision was made), and even got to see some of the numbers that showed just how Title IX changed everything for their Athletic Department’s balance sheet.

    Aloha Rainbow Cliff,

    Klum Gym to come down??

    Otto Proc Klum is a legend and so is the gym.

    Off season pick up games had the intensity, at times, of season competition.

    Some of us were somewhat restricted in playing in those games; when the ball was in the air, training kicked in and you went straight for the ball.

    What foul?????

    Yes Hawaii 24 as you mention games played in klum was just as you stated

    INTESITY and very serious !

    You had to have game playing in Klum as any player who stepped on that gym floor was

    there to perfect their craft. Fouls as you say “what foul” as the ball was not coming to

    you as Chilli Willie, Boyd Bates and Johnny Walker wasn’t having it. Eleven buy ones and

    IF you lose it was a long wait as the fab five guys had next and they were staying on as

    NOBODY could beat them and get them off the court. Remember John Penebacker just rising

    for a dunk and big Melton Werts just looking at him and couldn’t do nothing about it.

    Otto Klum Gym Hawaii 24 was who’s who among the baddest B-ball players on the Island !

    MAHALO for being there and seeing the highlight show !

    VCU and Butler are not from any of the high and mighty conferences with million dollar logos and Wall Street agents.

    Still, they made it to basketball’s elite final four. Butler’s second consecutive visit.

    Boise State and TCU are small football enrollments and prolly represent football’s version of Butler and VMU.

    Chaminade Coach Merv Lopes once recounted how he washed his team’s jerseys early in the AM after they defeated Ralph Sampson’s Virginia team in 1982. talk about low cost budgets.

    The common thread in all these programs is not so much the result as much as the road these programs took to get there and the burning drive to overcome mediocrity with excellence. That comes from the top and filters down to the bottom. Excellence. You wont find it mixed with entitlement.

    The first two games in the fall represents more than an opportunity for our warrior team 2011 to launch an undefeated campaign. Colorado and Washington present Hawai’i with a unique venue for payback. Back-to-back, on our aina and the continent.

    Both these PAC 12 moguls have successfully conducted recruiting raids in the last three years that have swept our aina like a Miyagi Tsunami. The Huskies will have a dozen or so of our locally produced blue-chip ballers on their roster and Brian Cabral has done wonders seizing his cache of sandwich isle muscle since he returned to his polynesian roots and donned a malo on a chilly Colorado sideline. Break out the T-leaves Cabral.

    If you have ever had the thrill to play D1A football–u will understand these two games need no Knute Rockne stir. Every maoli on warrior team 2011 will possesses enuff incentive to train hard this summer and prepare themselves for redemption. You cant kill a tsunami to avenge, but you can make invading recruiters aware of the boyz they left behind.

    Go team 2011!

    Working as a travel agent in LV, with our clients on the plane one NorthWest departure was delayed over thirty minutes as we waited fo a co-pilot to show up.

    He finaly showed up clutching a Port O Sub sandwich in one hand and a Starbucks frapachino in the other.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    RASU ~
    While transporting classified docs back from the US Embassy in Japan to HI, the United flight could not depart until I was on board. It was always an uncomfortable feeling to board late. You just knew the pax were waiting on this Gaikoku-jin to get his okole on da plane!
    I could feel the 👿 vibes from the passengers who were held for nearly an hour waiting for me. Those daggers sunk deep into my back as I was directed to my 1st Class seat. They couldn’t understand the level of *attention* that was shown to me as I stepped into a pair of 1st Class seats. Once I was strapped in, the pilot was given the green lite to depart.
    On arrival at HNL, it was nice to be able exit the aircraft 1st, by-pass customs, and hele on! All my checked baggage was sealed & marked with Diplomatic immunity tags, and waiting for me. Anyone who has ever suffered in the long lines going thru Customs inspections can appreciate that advantage. Of course the docs were inside a secured briefcase which I hand carried. A military staff car picked me up, and off we went to Ft Shafter.
    Note to Jason: I was always ‘ono’ for a Strawberry Slush Float from Byron’s drive-inn as we exited the airport area. Still enjoy stopping in for one as you and I did after a Warriors game one time.
    To repeat something first raised a year ago but now definitely ready for addressing: Klum Gym, used from early morning until late at night practically every day of the year, has been idenitifed as the site for expanded parking facilities for the University of Hawai`i at Manoa in order to meet the City & County of Honolulu’s minimum parking requirements for the ENTIRE campus, not just the athletic facilities.
    Given the length of time required to go through the planning & design process, to obtain construction funds from the Legislature, and, of course, to go through the permitting process after the contract has been awarded, the demolition will probably not take place until the summer of 2014 with the opening of the facility probably somewhere around the fall of 2016.
    To address something raised by Pomai in #154:
    I thought that they where trying to put Klum gym as a historical building, therefore not to be torn down?
    There are no THEYs working on issues like this, only WEs. Unless a small group gets together and and then moves forward to work with The Powers That Be, then be prepared for having even more cars on and around campus six years from now.
    There may be a lot of football experts who regularly read/comment on this blog, but when it comes to political activism and getting things done/undone downtown, trust me on this one.
    Too bad that you have to remain anonymous, Pride, because we could certainly add your name to the list of great o-lineman to play at UH. (don’t try to deny it either, or I’ll have to out you!) 🙂
    We have seen Coach McKnight’s excellent work, and it’s good to know he’s going to be mentoring these great young prospects on the o-line.
    Colt Brennan is the greatest ever. Davone is going to be one of the best of a group of revievers ever to play at one school. Pilares, Wright-Jackson, Rego et al, round out what could very well be the best offense UH ever fields. (I know it’s hard top imagine that especially when comared compared to last season, but it’s true.)
    Let’s get that schedule done!
    I just received the Midweek in the mail. My letter is the first on page 4. The editor added some phrases to it, referring to Bob Hogue’s article and to new season tickets. I didn’t know he would do that, but the result is better, I think.
    03/27/07 @ 10:54
    Comment from: Tom Mui [Visitor]
    This is Gigi’s letter as it appears in Midweek.
    Frazier must go
    Regarding Bob Hogue’s column about the pressure being on University of Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier, UH foot¬ball fans are upset that he still has not produced a: final, complete schedule for the fall 2007 season. There are two slots that need to be filled. How can people renew their season tickets – or new season tickets be sold – when they don’t know the schedule for the home games?
    What makes it more irritating is that UH has a highly touted quarterback, Colt Brennan, who is being groomed for the Heisman Trophy. The quality of the teams he plays against will. sway how voters perceive him. So far, UH, which is a Division I-A school, has one Division I-AA team on its schedule. If a second is also scheduled, it will not count toward the wins required to play in a bowl game, so it’s like throw¬ing a game away. And as time marches on, fewer Division 1¬A teams will be available.
    There’s now a groundswell of opposition, and calls for Frazier’s firing are being heard. If he is as incompetent as he seems to be, then he must go. It’s not nice to terminate someone’s livelihood, but that’s the nature of the business.
    Sometimes, you need a nudge to find a more suitable niche in life.
    Glenda Chung Hinchey
    Incidentally, if you really want to meet HF for lunch, dinner, breakfast, high tea or whatever, why not send him a formal invitation by mail?
    Comment from: Stephen [Member]
    I think we can safely say that the athletic director didn’t handle Riley’s firing and the football schedule very well.
    He also could have initiated the process quicker in hiring the next basketball coach.
    But I don’t think he’s going to mess up the hiring.
    I think the presence of Guerrero and the Kobayashi lawyer means that Nash at least becomes a finalist. It also means that some local sensibilities will be a consderation if the pick is someone else.
    My biggest concern was that a true rubberstamp committee — the tennis coach, ASU ties — would be involved. That’s not the case. This is as fair a committee as one could wish.
    It doesn’t mean that the athletic director won’t do what he pleases, anyway, but at least he’s getting some guidance this time.
    Pocho. I think coma is a good word for it. This was my first encouunter with the ‘300’ chapter of the TSAIKO club. I thought when Bulla called it ‘300’, that all the TSAIKO’s would have 6-pack abs like the Spartans in the movie ‘300’. I didn’t realize that ‘300’ meant something else.
    Roll call: Kid, Bulla, Beast, Al, Addahknowjoe, WreckinEyez, Kama, SteveM, Peaches, and myself. Kid took full advantage of the oppurtunity, and made sure he got his money’s worth. I think WreakinEyez, and the Beast were not too far behind. Of course it’s okay for the beast to participate to his heart’s content, because you know that he’ll burn it all of by 8:00 PM tonight. The rest of us don’t have to eat for the rest of the week and still will have calories in the reserve tank for Saturday’s activities.
    Lot’s and lot’s of food. Way too much food to mention.
    I’ll tell you guys more after my nap.
    I too am not quite 300lbs at this point. I need to get down to recycling center scale to confirm. :0 Further, it only appeared as though I ate the most because my plates were stacked only one layer thick, not six layers thick like some of the eaters.
    WWWWHHHHHHAAAAAAAPPPPPPAAAAAA!
    … Al and I always know where the good stuff is at. At Camellia’s, we were looking for the flap meat and oil dip. At Makino’s we were looking for the soft shell crab and sashimi.
    You always said great minds think alike.
    Gigi,
    Peaches can hold her own. She was trying to be nice to the rest of us, but still put SteveM to shame.
    gigi asked what Peaches ate. Easier to explain this way…she didn’t eat the shell fish (although she loves opihi), the crab legs, (too much work) and the ika (too common)–but she ate 2 of almost everything else. She ate more than WreckinEyez or Kama. At the end, her tray was empty except for shrimp tails and most of the napkin. A buffet veteran of 37 nights in Vegas and 81 days on cruise ships among her eating credentials.
    Her comment on the way home: “Nice guys. Boy, can they eat!”.
    uncle tom, i cannot take the credit for that one. it is quoted from st on his post above.
    btw, you don’t have to be a 300 pounder to join us. the beast and i are below the weight qualifier. as long as you can eat like one.
    i just thought of something funny. can you imagine if we went to camellia or some other all you can eat place every day for one week. imagine the comments coming from the wait staff!!!!!!! hahahahhaha.
    kat’s sushi…all you can eat made to order sushi. $20.00, last year anyway.
    stevem has scale with minus 13 lbs, pre set.
    joe, came prepared today, had snorkle.
    pride, was on diet too. see food diet. see food eat food.
    wreck will dream of giant vana falling upon him as he bathes, in hot springs. (he ate all their ancestors today).
    the beast was imagining he was at uh already feasting on the training table. at least today he practice.
    bulla was sick today. ate only 5.5 lbs of makino’s finest.
    kama kame late. therefore was practicing ancient art of speed gorging.
    peaches was pretending to eat daintily until i caught her wolfing down the nigiri sushi at the far end where she thought no one was lurking.
    hey, wait a minute, thats only nine. they charged us for ten. kid’s fault, i tell you some peoples children…just don’t know how to act in public.
    Al … if Peaches sees this she might ask some braddahs to sit on you for a while 🙂 I have never seen her “wolf down” anything…I have seen her, on a cruise ship:
    * eat buffet breakfast 0900-1000
    * pick up snack at 1100 lunch buffet
    * go to dining room lunch 1230-1330
    * get a plate at the pool snackbar 1500
    * go to Tea in the buffet at 1630 (some ships)
    * dinner in fine dining 1930-2100
    * check pupus in buffet when dinner service ends 2200, take to room if skipping show.
    * pupu’s from night club/bars 2300 (optional)
    * 0100 midnight snack at 24-hr restaurant
    * cofee/fruit/pastry at 0630 (port days)
    * room service if too tired
    * back to the breakfast buffet when up
    …but she never wolfs down food. I am glad food is included in the fare. A cruise ship might be one of the few places that won’t blanch when the Tsai-ko’s come down the buffet islands.
    Tues, Mar 29
    6 pm dinner
    7:45 “Adjustment Bureau” at Dole Cannery Theaters
    If interested, please post on blog or respond on facebook.
    First I heard about the Tsaiko Dinner & Movie Night – how long has this been going on? Where’s the dinner? Do the Tsai-kos have a Facebook page? When did that start? I’ve never been to anyone or any organization’s Facebook page before because I understand that lurkers are not allowed and everyone has to register.
    Up until we closed down our production company at the end of 2005, I went to every single movie in town – first-run or classic showings at the various venues. Five or six times a week sometimes. Since then, I probably have seen as many as five movies all totaled. Not sure if it’s lack of time or lack of money – or both – but I really do miss going to Da Flicks.
    That is getting a little extra subjective,but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful,has extra flair,and some cool positive aspects like ‘Mixview’ that allow you to quickly look connected albums, songs,or other users linked to what you’re listening to.Clicking on one of those will center on that item,and any other set of “neighbors” will come into view,permitting you to navigate round exploring by comparable artists, songs, or users.Speaking of users,the Zune “Social” can be nice enjoyable,letting you discover others with shared tastes and becoming company with them.Then you can hearken to a playlist created according to an amalgamation of what all your buddies are listening to,which can be relaxing.Those desirous about privacy will be relieved to grasp you could possibly stop the general public from seeing your own listening habits in the event you so choose.
    Britain has a new minimum wage coming soon but surely that’s just window-dressing when the new apprentice wage is approximately half the figure? This would make sense if these genuinely were apprentice opportunities but they turn out to be shop work and the like – work as a shop assistant for roughly half the minimum wage and you’re not called slave-labour you’re called an apprentice. Given the large numbers of unemployed and the zeal with which job-centres are forcing people into applying for inappropriate employment, businesses will find they have a constant supply of potential employees, whether they’re referred to as employees or as apprentices. The new real minmum wage, therefore, is the new apprentice rate and nothing else, no matter what the government might wish you to believe.
    Many times we see leaked images of upcoming products on the web, but in most cases these images turn out to be created using Photoshop or other image editing software. Now you can judege whether an image is taken by a digital camera or is edited in Photoshop by Photoshopped Image Killer.
    You really make it appear actually simple together with your presentation but I discover this topic to be really one factor which I really feel I would by no means understand. It kind of feels too complex and very broad for me. I am taking a look forward within your subsequent submit, I will attempt to get the grasp of it!
    Been reading this website for a few weeks now. It was high quality and solid knowledge. BTW, I enjoy your site template as well. I had fun reading it and hopefully you will post more in a few days. Do you have a twitter page?
    The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
    I noticed some thing as nicely about th is on different blog.Intriguing, your linear perspective on it is diametrically opposite to what I study previously. I am even now reflecting more than the conflicting points of view, but I am tipped heavily toward yours. And in any case, which is what is so terrific about modern day democracy as well as marketplace of ideas on-line.
    I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
    If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
