The search

There have been a lot of interesting names popping up in UH’s search for a successor to Chris Tormey, who coordinated the special teams and coached the safeties the past two years. Tormey is now at Washington State.

But a reader made an interesting suggestion: Kim McCloud, a former UH defensive back. A Waco television station reported that McCloud will not be retained as secondary coach at Baylor. McCloud, who also has coached at Nevada, is a nice fit for UH. He’s young, a hard worker and, by reports, a persistent recruiter. Most of all he has ties to UH.

* * * * * *

There is a possibility Ellis Henderson, who signed a scholarship agreement with UH two days ago, will grayshirt and join the Warriors in January 2012. Henderson could use the extra time to allow a shoulder injury to fully heal. Henderson is a speedy player who can be used at either cornerback or receiver.

* * * * * *

It’s a good strategy for the Warriors to move up the start of spring practice to March 9. With a new offensive line, the Warriors will practice for two weeks, then during spring practice, the coaches can thoroughly evaluate the progress. Adjustments, if any, can be made for the final two weeks of spring practice.

* * * * * *

More and more, it appears outside hitter Steven Hunt is key to the volleyball Warriors’ success. He doesn’t make a lot of  noticeable plays, but he makes them at crucial times, like in the fourth set of last night’s match. He’s an excellent passer and good blocker.

Happy birthday to JaM.

I think the key is Walker. When Walker struggles the team struggles. Hunt served out at a very crucial time at the end of the 4th match. I thought this was a huge mistake considering how UH was blocking so well in that rotation. But if Walker plays well UH can beat anybody out there.

I agree that Kim McCloud would be an excellent choice for UH. It would be a huge pay cut for him, but if he’s out of a job soon then UH could be a great fit for him.

  23. A-House February 4, 2011 10:10 am

But, the bigger question is, did he apply for the job??

  24. Garret February 4, 2011 10:10 am

I agree with the decision for UH to give Mike Edwards a second chance. I’m sure that the UH coaches did their research into his background and they decided he was worth the risk. It should be noted that *other* coaching staffs also decided he was worth the risk and were also trying to recruit him, which indicates that numerous schools were satisfied with his character and believed in him.

Pisa, Colt, Bess…it would not be a bad thing for UH to get a reputation as a school that will give a second chance to athletes that are deserving of one. It should also be noted that the 3 UH players I mentioned made it to the NFL…something that 4-star athletes looking for a place to start over will notice.

  25. Garret February 4, 2011 10:13 am

LA took one *big* step in being able to get a football stadium…the naming rights sold for between $700 million and $900 million! I wonder how much the naming rights would sell for a new stadium in Hawaii, especially with a bowl game and the Pro Bowl there? Was that taken into account when deciding whether or not to build a new stadium?

“It is very clear football is coming back to Los Angeles,” he said.

The reason for the revelry was to announce the name of the proposed 70,000-seat retractable-roof stadium as Farmers Field. The 30-year naming-rights deal with Farmers Insurance is worth $700 million, with the possibility of growing to $900 million if two NFL teams relocate to the proposed stadium.

    hanging in the balance…

ellis henderson has such upside and many sought his attention. i don’t know if i’d risk losing him with a grayshirt year. afterall the grayshirt agreement is a oneway street.

perhaps, if his shoulder is that “bust up” maybe a redshirt medical year (potentially only) may be best served at this time?

at least he is locked in for the year and can attend school, practices, rehab, go to meetings, maybe carry a clipboard to learn more, and maintain a bonding with his team.

  27. Garret February 4, 2011 10:15 am

Bad news about Aloha Stadium’s repairs. With the freeze on funding stopping basic improvements, the backlog of repairs needed will just grow.

Q: What major work would be halted if money is withheld?

A: The funding that’s there for this session for the mauka section would have entitled them to start work on the towers. That would stop. The plan was to build a tower in each of the four corners of the stadium, and in those towers would be elevators for passengers, plus service elevators and restrooms. So they would close up where the wedges are, because there’s no other place to put elevators or restrooms. And that’s not frills, it’s basic needs.

You know, the state likes to build things. But it’s the maintaining of those buildings that’s the problem. It’s like your family home. If you build it, you have to maintain it. You have to paint it. You have to fix the plumbing if it’s broken. But you can’t wait until it breaks down, or wait for 20 years, because now you have a bigger problem.

And now the NFL wants to come back, so HTA is negotiating to extend the two-year contract. And you have the Mountain West Conference in sight. And there’s all this talk about expanding sports marketing in Hawaii. But how can you do that with a stadium that’s half-repaired, half-painted? It doesn’t look good. To me, if you want to do all of that, you have to put the money into improving it.

One reason that Henderson chose UH was because he was told he had a chance of playing right away. I hope that he would not get upset at now being asked to grayshirt…did UH run out of scholarships for this class?

Henderson said no coach has talked to him about redshirting his first year in school.

“The reason they want me to play (slot receiver) is they’re really thin at that position,” Henderson said. “I’ll have an opportunity to play right away.”

    Good morning Tsaikos!
    Happy Aloha Friday!

    Happy Birthday JaM!

Good game last night. Didn’t think Hunt played that well, but he came through in the clutch.

A few random thoughts from last night’s game from a clueless wahine:
    – BillyV moved up to that tier of tables where the blimp comes out. Miss the interaction with him.
    – Davis Holt was suited up last night. Was that just for emergency purposes only? I thought he was redshirting.
    – UCSB looked like they were waiting for a flood to happen, their shorts were sooooo short (by today’s standards anyway).

For those attending tonight’s game, avoid the area around that large private school down the street from UH. Traffic’s gonna be a mess.

  39. al February 4, 2011 10:31 am

and yet i thought the new governor said he would support hawaii athletics to include the football program and the future of the pro bowl?

the warriors team, hawaii bowl, and the pro bowl are the three biggest commercials for the entire state of hawaii.

one cannot tell me that when viewing those events in the cold of winter somewhere on lake michigan, albany, new york, or some frozen tundra in your icy igloo that the photo shots of the palm (coconut they are, really) trees swaying in the soft tradewinds, the bright blue sunny skies, all coupled with shots of the tourists in their designer swimwear (not me – ross’) on the beach at waikiki that that picture doesn’t paint a thousand words. i can see ma and pa retiree ready to pack their bags and head for the nearest airport that goes directly to hawaii.

  40. al February 4, 2011 10:32 am

i guess the governor and the legislators need to really do the walk about at the stadium. but not on the day of a swap meet. they need to be there on a day like usc-hawaii with 45k. they need to endure the long hike to the yellow section if they can make it without oxygen. they need to see the lonnnnnng lines to the little restroom facilities. they need to see the handicap struggle to get to the worst ADA compliant state facility. they need to stand in line for nearly half a quarter to buy your kid a hotdog and soda (for ten bucks).

they need to sit on the aisle way and watch 10-20=30 people young and old alike stumble, trip, fall, and land in their laps because of the poorly designed stairs and the lack of hand/safety rails to latch on to. (neil, come sit on my seat. i’ll take the vip booth in exchange.)

    parking…i won’t go there.

    …nuff said.

  41. BigIslandkurt February 4, 2011 10:32 am

Coach Mac should give serious consideration to Tim Cross. Big ten recruiter of the year and one of the top 25 recruiters in the Nation voted by rivals. He was with Brewsters’ crew that got let go when Minnesota hired a new coach. Texas is his main recruiting grounds. He understands Hawaii and the culture we live in. How? He was the roommate of several Hawaii boys when he was in college at UNC. He is also the former coach of former UH RB Josh Gale’ai. He would LOVE to be here. He was mainly a dline coach, but that does not limit him from coaching any of the positions. He is one top notch coach and recruiter!
    BIK

  42. Derek February 4, 2011 10:32 am

I agree in that Walker is key. But, the way I look at it the main problem when the team struggles is when the middle blockers don’t produce. Shane Welch is not a force (yet). Shane Popelka, the new recruit who was to join us, didn’t show up or either didn’t like it here. Lofy came in last night and did a nice job. Dyer is o.k., but he’s undersized. We missed Rowsom and Grgas from last year and they did a very good job w/ the two of them.
At 6’9″ I think Lofy has earned some more playing time. He had some key blocks in the 4th set during crunch time. Another thing, forget the float serve. It ain’t working.

But, things are looking up. Men’s basketball improving by the day and by the game. Ostrowski has given the team a big shot in the arm and some much needed speed and hustle. Amis has seemed to have gotten over his injuries and playing well. Barnes starting to hit shots again after a cold spell. Wahine finally won a game. Hooray! Still, too many turnovers. Looking forward to Wahine softball next week. I never thought I would say this, but I think I’m going to see some of their games next wk. Last year was the first time I went to see the Wahine at the softball stadium. It was against Fresno St. and it was exciting. This team needs our support. Looking forward to the baseball season also.

I didn’t particularly like the tone of Reardon’s column, but I hope that’s the end of it and we move forward. Everybody deserves a chance after making a mistake. Need I say about some examples? No because people know about them. For me, Mike Edwards deserves our support because he is now a Warrior and one of our own. As Coach Mack so aptly said, we are playng for the University of Hawaii, but more importantly we are playing for the entire State of Hawaii. Mack is a disciplinarian. He won’t tolorate bad attitudes, poor study habits, or problems with the law. He will suspend players no matter who it is or even kick off a player from the team. Mack believes the team is bigger than any one player and when you don’t represent Hawaii’s team the way people should, he will put the hammer down.
But, Mack is a coach who cares about his players. He suspended JoPierre Davis because Davis had some problems and was kicked off the team. But, Mack let Davis keep his scholarship. And to Davis’ credit, Davis graduated from Hawaii and got his degree. I hope Davis is doing well now.

  43. madeinhawaii February 4, 2011 10:33 am

Wow.. how badly did he bang up his shoulder that he needs that much more time to heal? Oh well, I’d rather see him at 100% than struggling just to keep up due to a nagging injury.

  46. d1島 February 4, 2011 10:37 am

  47. al February 4, 2011 10:39 am

imho, ellis h more than likely talked it over with da warrior’s coaching staff and told them about his injury and why time is needed to heal. what we speculate is pure speculation cause we don’t know nothing about what ellis, his family, and da coaches are discussing. best to just keep quiet and let them work out the details. similar to what happened with recruiting this past season. all kinds of noise by us, but in the end da coaches did a very good job. we don’t need the “nielelism” like most of the egrets.

  55. Derek February 4, 2011 11:06 am

By grayshirting you risk losing a player if he changes his mind and want to play elsewhere. By redshirting he’s in school, practicing, going to meetings, learn the playbook, rehabbing, weigh room, etc. and we’ve signed him up for 5 years. I would think Henderson is too good a player for us to take a chance in possibility losing him. The only way I would grayshirt Henderson is if Henderson himself has said that he wanted to grayshirt and his explanation was sound and he has made at least a verbal commitment to Coach Mack that he will be here in January. It’s not binding on his part, but at least you have something that he’s promised to come to Hawaii. Most players don’t want to be end up being a liar and that they are true to their word. I think the word is ethics and the right thing to do. Just my opinion.

  56. Bryson February 4, 2011 11:19 am

It would be great if he did have to gray shirt that he attends classes at Manoa…at least that way he can get acclimated to Hawaii and there’s better chance of him playing for the warriors…You know other schools who were after him are prolly licking their chops right now…at least if he’s here n not in the mainland its out of sight out of mind…

Of course the Gov’s box (that’s the one at the diamond head endzone?) was nice – next to the elevator – but there are some steps down to the seats next to the window which can be a bit daunting and who likes end-zone seats at that height – unless you are the O/D coordinator!

    Aloha Stadium repairs:

I cannot seem to comprehend why it would cost so much and take so long to build a stadium in Hawaii compared to the mainland.

Are there so many greedy “hands” involved it sky rockets the cost? Why can’t the hands work together to reduce the cost and time for the sake of the State and ultimately the University?

    Re: Stadium repairs.

You need to look at the big picture… Politics. The new gov made political promises that he didn’t specify how to pay for. With projected budget shortfalls he needs to find sources of revenue. Now enter obligated(“promised”) funding for the stadium. He shows his right hand and says he wants to re-examine the stadium issue. It now disappears into a new and unneeded study. He can now use his left hand to pull the promised funding and apply it to the things he wants to pay for. In otherwords, he kicked to can down-field and will most likely cause nothing to happen for another 10 years.

three, he is a good recruiter
four, he will compete with tony for frequent flyer miles
five, he works well within a group and will not let his ego get in the way
six, he will bring fresh ideas that i will embrace graciously
    seven, the guy can recruit
eight, he is very computer literate and internet savy.
nine, he will out hustle any recruiter around
ten, he has local ties where he help families connect between places across the ocean and back.

Most everyone would say he’s on the right path. And then you have your vintage Coach Mack who doesn’t realize half the the things he says. Or even have the intelligence to understand that. What Coach Mack did by describing the incident as a prank was exacerbrate the incident. If Coach Jones had described the Colt incident as a prank he would have been run out of town.”

Did this problem with Aloha Stadium just come up in the past couple of weeks or has it been around for years now? As I understand it the study to repair the stadium was done under the previous administration and the decision was to repair it. The previous administration then under funded the repair budget so the repairs would take 40 years to complete twenty years after Aloha Stadiums useful life. I believe the correct decision is to reassess this nutty plan which is exactly what Abercrombie is doing and figure out what to do from here.

Mike Edwards went from a 4-star prospect in 2009 and is now a 2-star rated player now for the Warriors. How you figga? If you were recruited by Tenn., Mich St., Michigan, Illinois then you are considered big time. If you are recruted by Hawaii you are not supposed to be one of the elite players!!!!! To me, there is a lot of stereotyping and it’s doesn’t mean jack.
If a guy can play, the guy can play period. Perform on the field. Based on what I have seen the following players that Hawaii signed are underrated as far as the star rankings are
    concerned.

    Justin Vele
    Kendrick Van Ackeren
    Trevor Davis
    Ben Mamea
    Promise Amadi

Pride, I’m thinking someone who has NFL ties or maybe another wily vet who’s been around and is not quite taken with retirement yet. Sounds like Mouse has been a great addition so why not Dick Tomey? He was always big on special teams, lives here anyway, is financially secure, is intensely competitive, respects Mac, will get a regular paycheck plus added time toward state retirement benefits and still wouldn’t have to deal with the day to day stuff Mac does. And he would bring back an aggressive style to special teams. Davis Toloumu, Mike Akiu, Falaniko Noga, those guys blocked a bunch of kicks. Something we haven’t seen in over a decade. A true commitment to being aggressive on special teams. Are there young up and coming coaches out there who would be great additions? Absolutely. But at this point in Mac’s career I don’t think he’s looking for a BCS or NFL gig. He just wants to do things the way he’s always done them and have fun doing it. And I’m willing to bet Tomey can still recruit with the best of them. He’s a very charismatic man. When he walks up to you with that big smile, puts his hand on your shoulder and says you’re looking great… Sign me up coach.

Tim Cross would be all of that and more. McCloud is a nice name because he is a Hawaii alum. But I’d still take Cross over him. TC is a nationally-renown coach. He started off at Texas with Mack Brown….went on to Syracuse and finally to the Gophers. Coincidently, Gordy Shaw was a coach at Northern Colorado when Tim was a star linebacker at Northern Colorado back in the 80’s. He was also there and was on the same tight-knit defense with Kekoa Kealoha, Punahou alum and UNC dlineman. He has ascended up the coaching ladder to be one of the best at his profession. For those of us who knew him, this bradduh Cross just has “it.” Parents love this coach and so do his players. He was able to steal/guide many blue chip players away from other big time programs in Texas, Cali, and Colorado. If he makes it to the interview phase, he’d be a hard choice to pass by.

I don’t call enforcing a contract causing trouble. Its a struggle to not slide down that slippery slope. Give an inch and they take a mile they say. This is for both sides. “BOSS” and worker. If you think being a union leader is an easy job? Try it, rest assured that it is not.

Why do you think the “BOSSES” don’t want you to have representation? So they can do and pay you whatever they feel like. Granted most “BOSSES” are okay, it just takes that one rotten apple to make your life hell. Why don’t you ask some of the SA workers which “BOSS” told them “When this is over and done with, NO ONE will be full time and NO ONE will have health insurance.”

as a shop steward for the union I belong to, I agree, in my industry, union representation is needed. However, for my regional representative, in which belongs to another company, to come into my work area and create havoc where there is nothing wrong, tells me he is at my company trying to solidify HIS union position as his company is going through the merger. Or otherwise he will be getting paid while others are on strike. Or he will be out of a job and out of the union altogether.

I worry for myself and my family as times change in my industry, which probably would be the demise of the union where I work but at this moment there is no need to rock the boat as presently my job is secure. And it would seem for at least another 10 years. But who knows. I’ve been through RIF’s, frozen contracts, etc.! One can never tell!!! But we’re still here after 80+ years of service! and still tops in our industry!!

  125. hawaiiansun February 4, 2011 5:45 pm

#124, I asked around the mainland circuit–Cross is legit. He has recruited dozens of players labeled with 3-5 stars while at Minn. he has worked in the trenches and should fit somewhere in the D fold with Aranda. It’s a natural fit. They have much in common.
UH needs a black coach and it would be a plus for recruiting since we are targeting on mainland recruits.

  126. tommui February 4, 2011 5:49 pm

AL – I thought that NCAA dictates that you can only have x-amount of coaches and so a “volunteer” coach would still counts against that limit, would it not?

I always thought Dick Tomey would be a great spokesman for the program. He was articulate where June and Mac are not.

  127. RedZone February 4, 2011 6:03 pm

Good Job coaches on keeping the Athletes on the roll for “Student Athlete” being on the road especially for Hawaii players must be difficult! So good job coaches.. Especially Coach Mac who let the players who needed the time to take off of practice to finish projects!

  133. A-House February 4, 2011 6:29 pm

With respect to all who favor Tomey, I must stand on the other side as during the 2007 magical season he refused to vote for Hawaii in the top 25 poll.

Yes, it was his decision and he obviously felt that Hawaii was not worthy of a top 25 ranking.

I have mine and care NOT to see him back on the Warrior staff.

  134. A-House February 4, 2011 6:35 pm

Kudos to Coach Wade and Arnold for setting the academic standard that if a player is under performing in the classroom that player stays home to take care of business should they go on the road or not play if the team is at home.

That is a excellent standard; not the “win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat”! ( Mrs A-House)

  136. hawaiiansun February 4, 2011 6:51 pm

Both Kim McCloud (Haw ’91) and Tim Cross (NCol ’90) were caught in coaching shuffles.
They are both black and around the same age.
Tim Brewster was fired as Minnesota’s HC in mid-season and Cross was not retained by the new regime.
Phil Bennett replaced Brian Norwood as DC at Baylor, so he brought in Carlton Buckels as DB coach whom he coached while on staff at LSU. Bennett was cut loose as DC at Pitts and was the former SMU head coach who was replaced by JJ.
    Buckels replaced McCloud.

At this stage, we have 4-former UH players (Miano, Tony, Smith and Rolo) on staff, so, the priority here should be to get the best coach for the program.McCloud has the natural DNA for the slot vacated by Tormey–he coached DBs at Nevada for 7 years and ditto for three years at Baylor under DC, Norwood. he has some credits and I like the fact that he excelled in the classroom at Hawaii.

Tim Cross has the better rep for recruiting, although, McCloud was the DC for recruiting while at Baylor. He’s seasoned. I just dont believe Haw can compete for recruits in Texas where hundreds of coaches trample the beat on a daily basis–CAL is our bread n butter and we need someone like Adrian Klemm to make an impact.

Obviousily, this is soley MAC’s choice.
    It will be interesting….

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  332. coach store March 4, 2011 4:45 pm

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
