“The Noke”; Warrior Bowl rosters

The Warriors today uveiled “The Noke,” a scheme in which running back Inoke Funaki takes the direct snap.
“I am so honored,” left guard Ray HIsatake said, “to be in an offense named after a great man. Inoke is a living legend.”
It will be an easy transition for Funaki, who played quarterback during his first four years at UH. There’s a twist in the scheme in which quarterback Greg Alexander can curl deeper into the backfield, creating a double-pass option.
The only drawback is Funaki, not wearing the protective orange jersey assigned to quarterbacks, was a live target during team drills. He suffered a cut on the left side of his neck from linebacker Po‘okela Ahmad.
“He went for the jugular,” Funaki said.
“Did I do that?” Ahmad said. “Everybody keeps telling me I did that. I’m going to say I’m sorry.”
In other UH developments:
• Greg McMackin said defensive tackle Tuika Tufaga will go on scholarship this summer. McMackin said he has one scholarship to give. Among the candidates are  slotback Jon Medeiros, outside linebacker Corey Paredes, wideout Daniel Lofton and kicker Brett Symonds.
• With tweaking injuries to cornerbacks Tank Hopkins (back) and Jeramy Bryant (right ankle), nickelback Richard Torres and Lewis Walker were the No. 1 corners today. Steve Christian also got a lot of reps at corner.
• Right wideout Malcolm Lane finally broke out with some big plays. In one, he juked a defender before scooting into the end zone.

  6. NYUH April 22, 2009 6:52 am

So if Texas secedes as their governor suggested, does that mean all its football teams are ineligible to be part of the NCAA? No UT, Texas A&M, SMU? Hey, UH could even reclaim the passing title if Texas Tech was not eligible.

  7. madeinhawaii April 22, 2009 6:58 am

    Morning all…

    NYUH…

If Texas secedes from the US… hmm… Castro would apply for a travel visa. The Somalian Pirates would look to set up a base in the Gulf. Japan would try to negotiate an oil deal. June Jones would be out of a job.

    Ralph,

    RE: The Swap Meet

Before 1 PM the Swap Meet is in full swing and parking is pretty much that recessed area fronting the ticket office on the K-Mart end of the parking lot. After 1:30 the crowds and vendors start to thin out. By two-thirty half are gone and one can weave in closer to the entrances around the Stadium. By three, most of the vendors are gone.

Had the honor and pleasure of attending the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl game and the debut of Ken Niumatalolo as the Head Coach of the Naval Academy Football Team. Went with a couple local guys and we all had a sense of excitement and pride in what was happening. And the fact he became the HC for a US Service Academy during a time of war and the bowl game taking place in San Diego…..super special, super chicken skin. From the kinda low Navy jet flyover (small kine shi shi da bibidis) to their inspiring fight song to the great game itself, it was an event that I will pridefully remember and tell of for the rest of my life.

Other things going on in my life, having a very busy week launching my newest artist Anuhea.

If any Tsaikos are available after the game Saturday, she’s doing a FREE instore at Best Buy Honolulu 6pm and then a jam session at The Shack Waikiki 10pm (w 3 Plus). I’ve invited all the UH Football guys (quite a few of them have a crush on Anuhea already) and hoping a lot of them come. Kahai will be there with the “OL Mafia.”

Parking shouldn’t be a problem for the Stadium this Saturday unless more than 5K show up for autographs. If the bulk start meandering in after 2 pm most of the parking area will be open. If they arrive after 2:30, 75% of the Stadium parking lot will be cleared.

UNLESS, all the vendors hang around for the scrimmage OR they think they can make money off of the fans.

Nalani ~ We will be listening to the Perry & Price show! Be sure and stop by after with hubby and family to partake of the T-gate goodies.

I’m thinking Coach Mack will play those who worked hard to prepare for Spring training. Kaha’i had established his work ethic in the weight room and then on the field. I believe he will get his share of pt because of his dedication to his craft. You tell him that the “Eyes of Tsaiko’s Are Upon him!”

sh forum member cracker reports the following observations from today’s practice.

went to 1st practice today. there was about 50 fans. all the t.v. and newspaper guys there. i watched the offense. they look very smooth. dont know names but will give some details on numbers.

    QB:
#11 was used as a qb in a new package. the way florida uses tebow. he is a real good runner/ slashing type.
#12 the starting qb looks pretty decent, he is the best we got.
#10 has great feet , and a quicker release and strong arm. he is about 6′.

    RECEIVERS: OVERALL….SPEED.
#3 is fast, good hands, cuts routes short at times but is constantly getting well coached by stuzz. seems to be #12’s favorite target.
#89 on the other side did well too, but had a few drops, good speed .
#5 seems to have the full package. catches EVERYTHING, great route runner and has real good speed. caught a lot of balls today
#87 is a big target, but seems to lack consentration at times.
#84 (i think) tall kid, awkward at times catches ball with body

    SLOTS:
#1 big target, tough , great hands , a football player
#21 is ‘the real deal’ lightning quick, hands, great routes.
#88 looks to be the #3 guy.
#2 nice job today. quick not fast, good hands.

    RBs:
    #23 is big
#22 had some real nice runs
#11 -see qbs. he is not the fastest but kid has great vision.

5b. Ryan Mouton, CB, Hawaii – At 5’9, 187 lbs, Mouton definitely doesn’t bring much size to the secondary. At the same time he seems to have a lot of athleticism and really likes to hit folks. While he might turn into a solid NFL corner, I see him as more of a special teams guy. Anybody who is small and likes to hit people seems to work well as a special teams option.

  87. Garret April 22, 2009 11:31 am

Another update on Mouton. I guess Mouton couldn’t have that private workout with the Bears DB coach that had been reported last week because of his hamstring injury.

Also, updating a report from last week on Hawaii cornerback Ryan Mouton. He will have a private workout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week in Texas. Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke had gone to Los Angeles to work Mouton out at his pro day but he suffered a pulled hamstring there.

Mike Leach is upset that the NFL downgrades his QBs…this sounds a lot like what JJ and UH fans were saying on Colt’s behalf last year.

A strong proponent of the spread offense, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach doesn’t understand why NFL personnel are so critical of the high-powered offensive scheme.

“Most of the league runs spread offenses and yet they’ll be critical of them,” Leach said during Tuesday’s Big 12 Conference call. “At some point you’ve got to wonder how many of those guys from the NFL even know what a spread offense is _ or maybe their definition’s different.

“But you look at New England, that’s a spread offense. You look at the Arizona Cardinals, that’s a spread offense. You look at the Green Bay Packers, that’s a spread offense. The Seattle Seahawks _ a spread offense. And I can definitely go on.”

Leach mostly hears that he turns his quarterbacks into “system” quarterbacks who are never prepared for the NFL. That includes QB Graham Harrell, who set a lot of records at Tech and will be drafted at some point this weekend.

“My favorite of all is when they say, “Well, they don’t think the (QB) can snap from under center,’ ” Leach said. “So you’ll have somebody _ whether it’s their GM or a scout or whoever he is _ and that guy will be ages 30-to-75, and he doesn’t think that he can teach a world-class athlete to do something that he can probably do himself.

Shawn Withy-Allen is doing well this season in Fayetteville.

Fayetteville is led by quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen, with him under center the Guard sports the AIFA’s 2nd best passing efficiency completing 62.6% of his passes and has allowed the second fewest sacks only surrendering four in five games.

The Athletic Department budget at Nevada has increased over 300% in the past 8 years! Their associate ADs have gotten big percentage raises and some of the coaches have gotten nice raises, as shown in the table.

The athletic department’s budget increased 304% from 2000-1, far and away the biggest increase of any other state-designated budget area. To dig a little deeper into this increase, below is a look at athletic department salary increases from 2003-4 to 2008-9.

    Garret:

Thanks for the mock draft info on Mouton going to the 49ers. Wouldn’t mind seeng Veikune with the 9ers also.

Keeping dream alive that Niners will draft Sanchez #10 and then ship him off to Washington for Colt and a #2 or #3 pick next year. Again, part of this trade is Bess coming to the 49ers for a late 6th round choice this year. After all, Bess was an undrafted players last year. Plus, Miami looking to draft another WR this year.

After the draft or during the draft, Niners can contact Grice-Mullin with an offer.

WOW, us 49er fans will be in hog heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  95. NYUH April 22, 2009 12:08 pm

    MiH and Rob,

    Thanks for the info.

    RBs:
    #23 is big Leon Wright-Jackson
#22 had some real nice runs Jayson Rego
#11 -see qbs. he is not the fastest but kid has great vision. Inoke Funaki

Hope that means LWJ is going to be a hell of a blocker.

  96. madeinhawaii April 22, 2009 12:24 pm

If Leon block effectively, he’ll be in for most of the game, that would give him plenty of oportunities to get his hands on the ball. I think it’s safe to say that we all want to see him have a break out senior year.

  98. madeinhawaii April 22, 2009 12:35 pm

Another SH update on practice today … this one from “Kahaluu Imua Warriors”

Had to drop off my wife in town for a 7am doctor’s appointment, guess where I went? First negative news; the QBs didn’t look as sharp today and Lane dropped a couple passes, besides that there was a lot of up side.

Offense: WRs and Slots look good again, Blount and Jovonte has speed and it showed this morning and so does Rodney Bradley who continues to impress. Great one handed bullet pass Ro Bra (Bradley) caught in drills. Ryan Henry, Salas, and Medeiros looked very good and consistent. I was never high on Lofton but he has improved a lot and I see why the coaches can’t pick starters which is good bad news. Hope to see a rotation at these skilled reciever spots. At the end of practice the team ran a few special plays with Funaki at QB. I’m not going to give the plays away but they looked good and it will mix up future Defenses. I’d rather he take the snaps as a half back but I’m not the HC. Rego had a good tough run up the belly of the D. The Oline (first and second team) looked pretty good. They did beat the D in half the plays in their line drills which is way better than last year when they hardly every beat the D at all. New coaches are doing their job. By the way who’s the guy helping out with the linebackers? Also future looks bright. Young Stutzmann looked good and the Garness kid looks great for a 1st year kid, has a good future with the Warriors. First looks at him I though he was too soft but the Coaching staff was smart to wait on him and with his hard work on weights, and maturity the delay is paying of well.

Defense: Speaking of the future, Lewis Walker is getting some playing time and is coming along well. Kenny Estes is also seeing some good playing time. Hanohano and Correa is getting field time but I wish Paipai would. The big red-shirt freshman is still not in pads but is in some drills. Young Meatoga got praise from Coach Mac and told all the oher D-tackles to follow his example in fighting hard in getting across the line of scrimage fast. I see Leatigaga playing D-tackle, I think a good move because of his size. I think Fonoti got a pick but I didn’t save my notes on my phone 🙁

Lastly talked to one of the big Frietas boys who played for Arizona. Asked him why he didn’t stay since he was a UH fan. He said for he and his brother 2 words: Duane Akina. Too bad we don’t have Akina on our staff. Being a coach now at Texas, we can’t afford him. Maybe the future. Frietas is also the cousins of center John Estes and also to big Kainoa LaCount who Frietas says is in JC to get the right classes for UH. Hope to see him in the summer.

    MIH:

Wonder if Akina did make a BIG difference for them as a coach?

Did Akina get down graded on the coaching staff at Texas? Thought someone posted something last year about a “new” Associate Head Coach. or, Texas has a bunch of “associate head coach” positions?

Maybe Garret can comment on this.

  107. A-House April 22, 2009 1:45 pm

  108. A-House April 22, 2009 1:47 pm

Wonder how effective the “Noke” will be once it’s used in a game?

One will presume that UH has a “number” of options in running this play – run or pass; different receiver/routes, etc.

  111. homey ℞ April 22, 2009 1:59 pm

A-House – When the Warriors run the “Noke” I think the D would expect run. It all comes down to BLOCKING! Run a few running plays with this formation then all of a sudden hit Pilares or Salas on a slot streak pattern. It’s fun being a sofa king coach!

  112. madeinhawaii April 22, 2009 2:03 pm

Doesn’t Funaki receive the ball in the RB position? So the defense really has no idea when the “Noke” will be run, right? Or did I miss something, like always?

And has there been a Nagy sighting?

Homey…KK has my plastic container that has the grilling supplies in it. Not sure if there is any charcoal but should have the tongs, shovel, lighter fluid, lighter, and so on….

  118. madeinhawaii April 22, 2009 2:25 pm

    Homey,

But if you look at the top of this blog.. it’s described as

“The Warriors today u(n)veiled “The Noke,” a scheme in which running back Inoke Funaki takes the direct snap … /… There’s a twist in the scheme in which quarterback Greg Alexander can curl deeper into the backfield, creating a double-pass option.

Which kind of indicates that he is lined up as an RB.

  119. d1島 April 22, 2009 2:26 pm

Is it “legal” for a RB to run-on-top-of OL to reach the goal line?

Reason, it is illegal for a defender to jump onto the back(s) of the DL to block FGs or PATs. Last year, Tua was called for a 15-yard penalty for “leaning” on the back of a defensive player.

At the time of its development all the UH computers ran on those IBM cards….legend has it that one particular individual was in charge of securing those cards.
Alas! after one night of excessive celebration, the cards were found strewn across the floor in Klum Gym then hastily gathered and returned to The Coach for game-planning prior to the season opener against Texas A & I….the rest is history.

51 players on each team which makes it very important for each player to showcase themselves as a player (both individually and team). If there only 105 that coach mc can invite to the start of fall camp, this game is going to be interesting because he has to make room for the other 20+ new players at the start of fall camp. my best to all the players.

It is sad how some people downgrade QBs, but at least they are consistent and put down the BCS Texas Tech just as much as they put down UH.

Harrell is this year’s Colt Brennan, with huge stats in a gimmick offense and suspect tools.

  198. Garret April 22, 2009 8:03 pm

It looks like the BCS might adopt pieces of the MWC’s proposed changes. Is it really better to have a 12-person committee (who could be stacked towards the BCS conferences) instead of the polls and computers?

The BCS could decide to adopt parts of the playoff plan proposed by the Mountain West Conference, even as the group seems unlikely to scrap its current system of determining college football’s champion.

Of the MWC proposal that he termed “a fundamental change,” Swofford said he agreed with MWC commissioner Craig Thompson’s assessment that the plan could be considered in one or two of its parts even if the playoff system is shot down by the college presidents.

“A selection committee? Yes,” Swofford said, of a performance-based group replacing the computers and polls of the current formula.

Jeremy Tyler, a 6-foot-11 junior, dropped out of his San Diego High School and said he would skip his senior year to play professionally in Europe, The New York Times and Yahoo! Sports reported on Wednesday.

Tyler, 17, will become the first player born in the United States to leave high school early to play professional basketball overseas. He is expected to come back in two years, when he is eligible for the NBA draft.

If Kahai and Brett Leonard are on the OL for the Makai team (thank you to Nalani for the info!), then Makai has 13 OL and Mauka has 9. Less reps for the Makai OL I guess.

It looks like Cal probably got the bulk of the starters at the offensive skill positions, plus 3 of the current OL starters.

For 5 years people in Brazil have been hacking into US military satellite transponders to use as ham radios (truck drivers), send coded warnings (rogue loggers in the Amazon), or to coordinate operations (drug dealers and organized crime groups). This means that when a US soldier needs to make an emergency call, the frequency he wants to use can be taken over by random people from Brazil or other countries.

Shortly after the last game of the season I remember reading the coach saying he’ll be fixing the things that need to be fixed during the off season. And like most other teams there’s no finer time in doing this than during 15 days of spring practices. This is a given.

Now excuse me for bringing this up. But didn’t the coach say we need to be practicing our special teams, clock management, the two minute drill, tweaking the offense and putting in new wrinkles, shoring up the offensive line and improving on being less penalized. And on the eve of their last spring practice before the scrimmage I’ve haven’t heard too much about any of the above problems being worked on aside from today’s introduction of a new wrinkle to the offense, the “noke shuffle”. And this is sad. No, no… not the “noke shuffle but the inattentiveness of what needed to be corrected.

Again, excuse me. But I’ve looked everywhere and elsewhere for every tidbit coming out of the Warrior practices on different blogs and other sources and I haven’t heard anything about the Warriors so much as practicing the kicking game, two minute drill or clock management in any game-like conditions during the spring. And you would’ve thought they would have.

After all… these aren’t phantom problems. Or small ones, either. And these are problems the coach said that he’d be addressing. Which leaves me befuddled because I haven’t seen, too, much where they have. Now who knows maybe it just hasn’t been reported. Or maybe under the cover of Klum gym part of the team is practicing the kicking game. And nobody knows about it. And there was nothing to be worried about after all.. Wouldn’t that have been neat. And I wouldn’t be so incensed at the path the team is taking.

But I am. Because my hunches tell me once again the team, as far as spring practices went, were overlooking the problems that needed to be addressed.

And it makes me want to cry, because I want so much for the Warrior’s to do well.

It leaves me so dishearten to no end when I read about how the other teams are feverishly practicing the phases of the game–that the Warrior’s seemingly didn’t during the spring practices.

  217. Jason April 22, 2009 9:46 pm

roysan16: I think part of the problem with clock management is that it’s hard to simulate game-time situations. What are you doing to do at practice, sequester the booth coaches on the hill (or in the stands), and the others on the sideline, then have them work on game calls and whatnot using their headsets (or cell phones, maybe, I’m not sure if those headsets can work out there)? Much easier done at Aloha Stadium, but they don’t get to practice there too often. I’m hoping they get to do a little of that kind of communication stuff there this Saturday, but then again, I’m guessing the coaching staffs are split, too.

I’d like to see them practice that kind of stuff before everything starts; I know Mack is signing autographs from 1 to 2, so maybe in the next hour the coaches can get together and simulate how they will communicate and work together between the sidelines and the booth upstairs. That was sorely lacking last year, and I think that hurt us. Miano is a key guy there too, cause he’s doing so much as the associate head coach, but he can’t forget his DBs too.

I also think the coaches need to work with the players to better organize themselves during the game; during the scrimmage on Saturday, I saw two QBs all the way down the sideline, with another two in the middle, none of them near their QB coach. It’s not Rolo’s job to coach only the guy in the game, it’s his job to coach them all. The players and coaches need to work together so that they are unified as units. That’s another thing I hope they work on and discuss on Saturday.

  218. roysan16 April 22, 2009 10:01 pm

    Jason,

Every where else I read, like UCLA, USC, Washington, Florida and even Nevada, the team’s coaches devote a lot of their spring practices to the special teams, 2 minute drills and simulated game situations, where the team’s practice clock management scenarios.

Here with the Warriors not too much.

Nevada, for example, I’ve read where a columnists wrote that the Nevada team practiced the special team’s play more than ever before.

    Same with Washington.

Florida I remembered the tv announcer saying they practiced a fake punt play 78 times during the spring.

And then, here, not too much.

Too many people make excuses for the coach, and that isn’t remedial at all. IMHO.

Garrett #200: Sorry my mistake. Kahai is on Mauka team w Noke.

  222. Jason April 22, 2009 10:27 pm

roysan16: And I don’t disagree with you, I was just adding on my thoughts on the clock management part. There were challenges from the fact that we had some new people thrust into the fire, and some older guys but in new positions that they hadn’t been in before. It’s not like clock management comes magically. So I believe there were circumstances that hampered our ability to successfully manage the clock last year. I’m hoping they are able to overcome those circumstances this year and eliminate them.

That said, I too wish they would practice that kind of stuff more as well. Then again, they’ll probably install more of that stuff in the fall; right now, it’s more for scouting and installing the basics so that the players can work on those things in their unsupervised workouts.

i thought it was reported that some time was spent on special teams concepts this spring.

we don’t have a punter in camp until the fall.
an invited walkon kicker is also due in the fall.
we don’t know who will be on special teams just yet until the starters have been determined, who will redshirt, greyshirt, yada, yada, yada.

i am sure that coach tormey will demand more time in this respect. part of our problems on special teams last year had to do with the concepts, plays, alignment and assignment. it had nothing to do with lack of practice time.

our so called two minute drills will get better. i think this year ron lee will be given complete reign over play calling. we also know who our qb will be and that qb has a better idea of what we are doing.

many don’t realize that colt stumbled through his first year at the helm. didn’t we go 5-7 that year?

patience my friend. after all they say rome wasn’t built in a day.
