The people’s choice
It doesn’t matter whether you approve of Dana Takahara-Dias’ hiring as Rainbow Wahine head coach.
What matters is, by most accounts, her players love to play for her.
What matters is her upcoming coworkers at UH celebrated her appointment.
What matters is that, for one day, pride had returned to a spiraling and puzzling program.
Takahara-Dias is a proven coach and educator.
Most important, she has a willingness to work with others, and a deep-rooted love for her alma mater.
Yesterday’s news conference felt like a reunion. She knew everyone in the room by name,
People really like Takahara-Dias.
They’re going to like her program.

wow.. new blog
Again, congratulations to Dana Takahara-Dias. Let the healing begin.
Excellent post, ST! Dana is a class person all the way. She’ll do an excellent job!
So is she Coach Dana? Coach Takahara-Dias? Coach Dias? or some other nick? Anybody know?
I’ll support by buying season tickets.
Well, she is a single mom now, but she still uses Dias in her name.
Night all…
All I can tell you about her is that she’s a really, really nice person.
And she’s very honest.
It’s good to know that the coaching issue has been settled, regardless of how they got there. The team members deserved that much and I bet a lot of people are eager to see what changes will be store for them when the new season starts.
yes!
Top 20.
I’ll have to repost what I just posted in the previous blog entry. Standby.
Who knows? She could be one of the best surprises, yet. Every great coach had their start somewhere.
Carried over from the previous blog entry, the following isn’t directed towards any one individual, but merely as a snapshot of what I’ve seen the past several days here on the Warrior Beat:
It’s actually sad to see much of the mudslinging that’s been going on here at the Warrior Beat the past few days.
While disagreements are a part of everyday life, purposefully painting people or entities with a broad brush, forcefully exerting one’s “opinion” on others, and calling people names for disagreeing with their stance, among other improprieties, is not what I started blogging here for. There are other blogs, message boards, and venues available for those who feel the need to stroke their ego and be “top dog.” It’s almost as if some folks want to start an altercation if someone disagrees with them, all the while disguising it as “debate.”
Go ahead and call me “soft,” “naive,” or whatever you feel like. It’s just sad to see the Warrior Beat turning into a frenzy of chest-pumping and some coming off as “holier than thou.” But that’s the way of life. Everyone comes out when they’ve got something negative to say, but not a peep when things are going good.
I think Kazz was right; the 2007 Sugar Bowl season did change things w/r/t the fan base…..and NOT for the better.
In the end:
“Avoid destructive thinking. Improper negative thoughts sink people. A ship can sail around the world many, many times, but just let enough water get into the ship and it will sink. Just so with the human mind. Let enough negative thoughts or improper thoughts get into the human mind and the person sinks just like a ship.”
—Alfred A. Montapert
It’s 3:45am here. I’m off to bed.
Good morning, wafan! (whenever you read this)
congratulations coach d!
happy birthday augie t!
so, i gotta say this to you. second wife relieves a lot of stress!
mahalo bull.
crw…
nice
CRW: Well said!
madeinhawaii: When she was at Moanalua, we always called her Coach Dana, even though she was the AD at the time.
Okay I’m guilty. CRW must be referring to me. Given the choice of thinking independently of what others are thinking. And looking at things with unbiased opinions I agree doesn’t conform to what conformers are seeing. So the question, therefore, does that make one a mudslinger?
If he’s referring to wf2 I’ll go on record as saying that I’m not offended by any of his diatribes. In fact I think he’s whimsical. Adds some great reading. And he’s entertaining. The cat and dog like exchanges he has with other posters I see it as playful, and not with any malice.
Strasburg at San Diego state has a fastball clocked at 103….
Congratulations to coach Dana…the process is over and its time to move on and help pick up the wbb program….Mei Ling is first in line with her commitment for season tickets…thank you ML!
Nitey Nite!
PS- I agree with CRW.
Like roysan16, I will look at my posts before I hit send and try harder to avoid the pitfalls. I have to admit that I stayed away a lot the last couple of days.
I prefer the warm, fuzzy, Tsai-ko ambience. When I need abuse, I go to ExtremeSkins and talk about Colt Brennan. (Actually the Cult of Colt thread is getting mellower too).
Found a new lilikoi chiffon pie to bring to the next T-Gate… 😆 😎
Oh yeah- WELCOME COACH DANA!
Next interviewee, perhaps???
Yikes…
HAUOLI LAHANAU AUGIE-T!!!
I promise to have a better joke ready next time you come to Kauai.
If your the athletic director of a school and you signed your coach to a 5 year contract and then the school decides to drop the sport after 2 or 3 years is the school required to pay the remaining years on the contract? Probably so.
Reading between the lines of why JD only gave DT a 3 year contract might suggest that this is in the back of JD’s mind.
can’t drop wbb with gender equity, it is the hallmark women sport…it is one notch above wvb, a player playing both wvb and wbb must be on wbb scholarship if she is on scholarship at all
roysan16,
I don’t think your posts are out of line. In fact, I like the fact that you are an independent thinker. Keep it up.
Or maybe JD was thinking that this coach will do such a great job that he wanted to be able to reward her with a substantial raise in 2012.
I can see why you find so much enjoyment in bowstock’s posts. I mean, do you understand anything about Title IX?
Looking at the blog entries for CW and DT announcements and write ups by ST for the next men’s volleyball coach and womens’ basketball coach it’s very noticeable that he writes more ingratiating and welcoming entries for DT and not so much for CW. In fact the feeling I get it looks like he’s doing cartwheels while posting DT’s entry. And the CW entry was somewhat perfunctory, and lacking in enthusiasm. So my question to ST is what do you think of the next MVB selection? (lol).
Happy Aloooooooooha Friday to all!
good morining wafan, good morning Izzy….
good morning Brew!
Достаточно интересная и познавательная тема
Gallinka,
Good morning…and I think you said that before…bwaaahahaha!!

howzit brew!
finally its friday, running on fumes already, gotta recharge over the weekend 🙂
The 2007 Sugar Bowl year gave a lot of people in Hawaii a new sense of pride.
Unfortunately when that sense of pride in UH athletics is NEW for many, it hurts more when it is not immediately supplemented.
The “newbies” get “hungry” fast. People start screaming with pitchforks and torches for folks to be fired, then unknowns with paper-ready resumes to be hired, etc…
The best way I can set an image on the new breed of UH “fair-weather fans” is when Colt Brennan’s helmet was almost ripped from his hands after winning the 2007 WAC Championship.
Here is some young punk (looks to be 20 years old) jumping for joy, while at the same time trying to rip an IMPORTANT piece of a player’s equipment from his hands.
It’s a real TRASHY way of celebrating new accomplishments and heights and it is down right embarrassing. Bush-league type crap.
Whether sounding like a spoiled child through on-line forums or stealing stuff from the student athletes that gave you things to celebrate, it’s all quite shameless.
In this I will say that I AM BETTER THAN PEOPLE LIKE THIS. I KNOW AND TAILGATE WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE BETTER THAN THIS!!!
I have no shame in saying this. The difference between people like me and those that I speak out against is that I ADMIT I FEEL THAT I AM BETTER THAN THOSE THAT THINK DIFFERENTLY WITH REGARDS TO UH ATHLETICS.
I don’t kick and scream at Colt Brennan “you owe this to us” when he is trying to eat his training table breakfast while not signing my 20 footballs for eBay.
I don’t sit there and check my blackberry for scores on games I placed money on during UH games.
I don’t stand there in 2006 after the OSU end of the season loss screaming at June Jones, “hey no mo sell outs loser”!!!
I don’t sit here and ask for “boycotts” when a coach I feel (with my arm-chair qualifications of a coach) should be the Wahine head coach isn’t hired.
.
.
.
Now I can go on and on and on with these classless examples of “sour and spoiled ‘Aloha'”, but it’s just a waste of time.
I still believe the people of Hawai’i represent a unique and special part of this country. I still believe that when things go bad or good, the BEST of Hawai’i will overcome all odds.
However, I truly believe that when you have the best people in the world all in one place, you will have the ABSOLUTE WORST just around the corner.
This is more than just sports. The FOUL behavior exhibited by those rotten mangos is indicitive of how THEY chose to live their lives and treat others with respect or with their version of “gratitude”.
People expect so many of others, yet they cannot be “decent” themselves.
Without fear of offending some lurkers I will say this and end this diatribe of mine:
IF MORE PEOPLE IN HAWAII ACTED LIKE TSAIKOS TOWARDS UH ATHLETICS IN TERMS OF SUPPORT (FINANCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY) THE SENSE OF PRIDE FROM THE 2007 SUGAR BOWL YEAR WOULD NEVER GO AWAY.
Good F’N night!
Ok, I’m all pi**ed off and energized now…
Hmmm… Leahey and Leahey is on the radio in like an hour and a half… Maybe I should wait?
good night Kazz
Nope, it’s late and I’ve seen the same Sportscenter clips like three times now.
Ok NOW, it’s good night. 😎
Aloha Loa!!! 😀
volcano Kazz!!! –> erupts! 😯
Now that the WBB committee has done it’s job, and has been disbanded (?) – could someone, anyone, please explain why the HTA guy? 😯 🙄 😈
aloha guys,
congrats to our new women’s bball coach. her challenges are many, but with determination she will overcome. there will always be the monday morning qb’s, imagine that…., but she has a solid base to work with and if the players admittedly respect her, it will be a smooth transition. despite the fact of no head coaching experience at a DI level, she can make up for it with performance criteria. some might say recruiting will be a challenge, but as for me and my house…..YOU GO GIRL!!!
for the negative types Kazz is referring to, put your head back in the sand or other anatomical cavities and keep it to yourself. if you can’t be nice, don’t give advice…or something like that.
Shucks – I was hoping Cat would have a new post out w/ fuud pixs, but noooooo…… she’s still blond….. 🙄
Okay – laters everyone. And everyone have a Tsaiko kind of day!!! 😆 😯 😆
me thinks the future is looking bright for uh ahtletics
one of the committee members was a teacher?
g’morning to kazz and brew,
long time no see, how you be?

D1…
“panasonic” …. thanks. It would have bugged me for a quite a spell.
Jason..
for some reason ‘Coach Dana’ is what I was thinking she would probably be called.
morning everyone
Good Morning Tsaiko Village People!
(Good Morning Kazz…how you?…put down that keyboard and back away from the ledge, you’re going to be just fine)
From UH’s website:
“State of Hawai‘i’s Advisory Commission for the Gender Equity in Sports” … You got to wonder if that will help UH’s case against Bolla.
It’s obvious if your’e not in the ” UH inner circle” that UHAD won’t hire you.
If i was an outsider and had no UH ties I would not apply for a UH coaching job.
Congratulations to Coach Dana!
Go Wahine!
Go Warriors!
Go UH!
And as Kazz alluded to, ‘ye of conditional love…just go!
🙂
The innocent always feel guilt. The guilty never do.
Congratulations to Coach Dana!
Pride. surfaces! Howzit, big guy!
Aloha Kakahiaka! Aloha Friday!
Season tickets for UH WBB are only $60. Not too much kala to show your support of the program. Remember: you are supporting the athletes.
According to the reporters, Dana was a unanimous choice of the hiring committee. Says something about the person & what the objectives were in this hire. If you weren’t on the hiring committee, all you state is conjecture. Just gotta go to the games & see how Dana does.
Roysan is quite perceptive.
LOL.
I like CW, and I think he’ll be a great coach, and connect well with the community.
My lament — and I guess it was transparent — is that I feel really bad for MW and TR.
Maybe I’m one of the few in this, but I really like MW. I thought he was the most raw-honest person I’ve met in the sports biz. He never did anything with malice. Thing is, he rubbed wrong a lot of people — OK, most people — in the athletic department. And that’s why he never got more than a three-year contract, and why his contract always seemed to lapse. Once he worked on a contract that expired for nearly a year.
So when his budget gets slashed, and his team leaves a day before road matches, and there’s not enough money for pre-match meals, well, you could see where things were going. And when he doesn’t get a say in his successor, well, I guess that says a lot.
I think TR was a good candidate. He was a head coach twice, he worked with national teams, and he received recommendations from some impressive folks (the head coach of the national team). But he never had a chance, and I think one of the committee members probably should have recused himself from the process.
I think any of the four finalists would be an outstanding head coach here.
I guess my empathy for a guy who served here 17 years and has four kids overshadowed the celebration of the new hire.
That said, I think CW will do a great job, and I look forward to working with him.
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
Great post Mr. Tsai, I must agree. I dont have the knowledge of the other finalists the way some here do, but I remember Dana’s coaching days at Moanalua HS and was impressed by her even then. Further she comes off as an excellent pick, based on what I’ve seen on the newscasts. She seems like a very genuine and caring person. Having Coach Goo ready to support her is also a big plus.
As for Dana’s predecessor, I really didn’t know him, except for a few conversations, and he did most of the talking. He seemed pleasant.
I must admit we did have an awkward start. When I learned he was going to be hired — a worker at his bbq company confirmed it — I asked him about it. He denied even being a candidate. I expected a “no comment,” or “I can’t talk about it.” But not a flat-out denial. And so when he was hired a couple of days later, I thought: I’m glad this isn’t my beat.
OK, one thing I liked about Bolla: he used to bring back presents to staffers from road trips. And he used to open slots on WAC Tournament travel rosters for staffers. I thought that was kinda cool.
Re: Women’s basketball.
There were bigger-name finalists, and I’m sure they have a wider reach and more experience in recruiting.
And they would have done an excellent job.
But at this time, the program needs to heal rather than expand. It needs to rebuild the base. She’s the right choice for the current situation.
Vince Goo had a way of getting the best from each of his players and putting the right combination on the floor to get the job done against teams that, on paper, had so much more muscle, power, and talent. Some years you really questioned the talent Goo had on his teams at the start of the season but somehow… someway… they’d knock down 20 wins or more, more often than not.
From all that I’ve read and heard about Coach Takahara-Dias, I suspect Dana has that ability, as well.
So, I’m looking forward to her start with the Wahine program. I’m not expecting a 20 win season to start, but I’m hoping to see the unabashed exhiliration on the faces of the players, the joy of being on a Wahine team, the comraderie, and one-for-all and all-for-one type intensity on the floor.
Dan-O
Thanks for the “Timex” suggestion in last night’s blog. . I think, however D-1(island) was right with Panasonic being the name behind the “Slightly ahead of our time” slogan.
I really don’t think a clock company would want the “slightly ahead of our time” slogan.
Although … Timex … as we all know could ‘take a beating and keep on ticking.’
So as I was gardening yesterday morning, a young man carrying a football walks through the gardens. I ask him if he’s on the UH football team and he says, “I’m trying. We’ll see…” That’s all he would say.
ST ~ Unsupervised workouts are open to everyone? Must be someone who wants to be a walk-on.
good morning team tsai-ko, watch out for the vog, crank up the ac and it aloha fridday gangie.
congrats to coach dana on being selected as wahine bball coach good choice and great get. me thinks along with cwade they will bring back more of the missing local community back to UH (surely needed).
take care today and play nice
It’s going to be weird when there won’t be a big NBA game on every day. Enjoy these times.
MIH:
Where are the slogans for Spam or Vienna Sausage or Ramen?
Let me join the rest of you in congratulating Dana. I had a chance to work with her over several years on community matters – she’s excellent. Woman’s BB gains big time, but the city administration loses a good person.
Ok, can we all be honest for a moment. the WBB search committee was a joke. It was a conflict of interest to have former coach Vince Goo even on the committee and he obviously ran the show. Surround that with Don Murphy, the tourism representative (who know nada about WBB) along with JN and MMK who both were desperate to higher a female?? UH should have filled this positiion with an Interim head coach and gone through a REAL PROCESS next year. They would have had more qualified candidates, and time to step back and do this right. At one pt. DTD was dropped from the process, then you end up hiring her. And how did Muffi fit in….HEck this process was so bad, they hired a MVB coach before they hired DTD. That being said, she is a wonderful person and will help to ‘heal’ the program. However, you are all candy coating this sport because it’s a womens team. Bottom line folks, she has to start winning-cmon winning is only thing that heals a bad program. And good PR doesnt equal wins. SHE HAS NEVER COACHED COLLEGE BASKETBALL!! Making the girls ‘feel better’ is nice, but you gotta recruit and know your X’s and O’s….is she gonna be able to do that? Would they have hired that lack of experience in a men’s program. NO WAY. Then why did they do that here. Even CW in MVB said he knew he needed head coaching experience that is why he went to Pacific. HELLOOOOO, JD went backwards in this process. Hopefully she will hire great assistants with lots of D1 experience or this could be ugly. Basically, they wanted the VINCE era back and hired the next best thing. That being said, DTD is a wonderful person with high morals and we all should support her in the upcoming years
Good morning Tsaikos…hope everyone has a great aloha Friday…
Congrats to Coach Takahara-Dias…hopefully, she will bring the WBB program to glory…
CWR,
I, along with many others, thoroughly agree with you RE: Post #13.
CONGRATULATIONS Dana!!
Two Cents:
Good points.
Although with CW, I think we all knew he could coach. But to get hired for an elite job, you need a head coaching job on the resume. That hurt Scott Wong, who, by all accounts, is a sharp coach.
ST,
The only slogan I ever heard for Ramen was from those old orange yellow bags back in the 50’s or early 60’s when I was growing up? The slogan was…
“Just add hot water and wait 2 minutes.”
I don’t remember SPAM ever having a slogan.. “Hormel SPiced AM)” Unless “Find your inner crafty cook” can be considered one.
Vienna Sausage… do they even have that stuff in Vienna? If it were popular there, you’d think you’d see a few floating in the canals. maybe something like…
“Looks like…
smells like…
feels like…
hmmm… tastes like Vienna Sausage..?!?!…
OOOh.. GEEZE!
GOOD THING WE NO STEP! “
ST let’s talk more about why UH gave DTD only 3 year contract…especially in a program so down and out….CW got the 5 yr. Once again, the gender equity issue continues to rear its ugly head. Bolla definitely will win the gender equity arguments, no brainers. Didn’t UH learn from that? If JD really believed in her, he would have given her the same ‘deal’. When will you guys really start researching that? Afraid of what you might find young Skywalker?
Now… which Coach’s contract is coming up next?
Other products that don’t advertise:
• Shoyu
• Pepper
• Dental floss
• Toenail clippers
• Deli-Cat
• Passion-Orange
• Answering machines
• Matson
2cents,
Maybe they offered DTD less than the optimal salary? So, maybe three years give her time to prove her merit and two years down the road she can renegotiate for more? Maybe the budget didn’t allow UH to offer enough for a long haul so they settle for three with room to re-nego two years from now?
Who knows?
Three years is okay… it’s the “one-year extensions” that are not. Those are kind of like “lame duck” extensions. Two years with a smaller second year buyout would be a better option, I think.
ALOHA KAKAHIAKA
Aloha Shoyu and Milani!
http://www.alohashoyu.com/
2 Cents:
Doesn’t seem to be any pattern with contracts.
Four months ago, JD hints he might drop a men’s sport; mentions men’s vb. Then he gives out a five-year contract?
Nash gets basically a two-year extension.
Dana gets a three-year contract.
Trap, after basically being on “probation” during his contract year, gets a one-year deal, which is essentially another “probation” year.
Coolen, Shoji get five-year deals.
ST,
Aloha Shoyu advertises, don’t they? I thiink they even sponsored most of those quick cooking segments on TV. We have 3 types of Shoyu at my house and Light, Dark, Regular. And three brands… Kikoman, Yamase, and Lee Kum Kee.
Did you know that one tablespoon of soy = 40-50% of your daily salt? Eating Teriyaki is like playing Russian Roullette.
Oh kazzy like some cheez wit da whine? Me tinks you paint yourself wit dat same brush wheneva you post dese rants and da Color of da paint is da same as dese dregs you indict. Lol
Too bad we can’t here what the Wahine players all think. I hope they are happy with the decision.
At $60 for season tickets, parking for all the home games will be more expensive than the season tickets. Go figure.
oops.. here = hear. ,,, eh you guys know what I meant…
ST…
Any news on any disqualifiers, yet? Or does it look like all the players, walk-ons and otherwise, will be able to make camp? Looks like James Smith (Farrington) is going the local JC route for a year.
where’s aaron brown?
chizzy dimude?
alex green?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
I wake up this morning to L&L on AM1500 and they’ve got a spelling bee thing going and what do I hear?
They ask someone to spell Keao Monteilh’s name and this guy says, “who the hell is that?”. So… he changes his decision and he is able to spell “T.J. Houshmandzadeh” with no problem.
Next guy spells “Hedo Turkoglu” with no problem, but then cannot even get past Vinnie Catricala’s first name!
JEEZ!!!!!!!
So sad when people cannot even identify the kids in your own “backyard”.
(oh… “good morning” 😈 )
So Dana is a single mom now, huh? Hmmm, interesting…
I kid, I kid!
Hey, if Vince Goo likes her, I like her. All the best.
What’s “deli-cat”?
Well I guess they SHOULD advertise it.
mih
if he goes to the cc route he will need to get his aa degree before transferring. i believe he may be going back to farrington to satisfy a course requirement and then he could requalify by the ncaa clearinghouse as long as he has the rest of academics in line for uh admittal. his other recourse would be to go to hpu or chaminade for a year fulltime. it sounds like his recourse is to go to farrington hs for that credit/course requirement.
Ok, so what do I do with the sniper rifle?
Speaking of “ledge”… they better hurry up with the roof and light repairs at Aloha Stadium.
The same sections that were taken apart around the time of the spring game are still the ONLY sections being worked on…
Last night, Pops and I had dinner with Chris Fetters. He is the man responsible for the information on our HS fb players on the informational website, Scout.com
He will also be covering Doris Sullivan’s PIAA Combine this weekend at SLS, and next weekend on the big island. Meanwhile, he was busy out here at Kapolei HS watching the team work out, interviewing the players, gathering statistics from the staff and taking photos for the site.
He and BarryM shot lots of photos/videos of the super select group of players as chosen by the coaches.
Every college coach should know that the athletes featured on this site are the real deal. By that I mean, the action shots, comments made by their coaches and staff are direct quotes. There is no 2nd or 3rd party comments made by an editor in the mainland who only looked at the photos. Mr. Fetters takes the time to talk to each player.
ST did Dana support UH WBB after leaving UH? Did she attend BB games or was a season ticket holder? Just curious. Many players have gone thru the program but how many actually come back to support it?
Phew! I was just going to call 911 to see if Kekoa was around somewhere!
HIHO
What’s done is done and let’s go forward. I’m not sold on the hiring yet, but one of the keys for the new coach is who are the assistants and can they recruit some good players? Finding DI talent with size in Hawaii is tough. We have a lot of chiquaquas (small players), but we need some inside presence. Otherwise, we will have to rotate the entire squad and full press all over the court and try to keep everybody fresh. We’ve already lost this year’s recruiting class so we have to work on for 2010-2011. Let’s see what happens. P.S. Connecticut will win the WBB championship again.
Congrads to most Tsaiko’s 4 displaying such passion over Dana’s selection. This type of emotional outburst is usually reserved for WAC championships, 20-win seasons or regional slection, unless of course u all r rooting just becz the music stopped and only one-chair remained.
U all got a female, a local, a Mufi protegee and a Sonya Sotomayor prototype….now, having appeased all the far-left nuances of the political hardwood–all that remains is to W-I-N on the basketball floor.
Moreover, our wbb program is a $1m sink-hole and Takahara-Dias has an Everest to climb not a jog around Kapiolani Park. She gets no mulligan and her startline is from a hole dug out from years of program neglect….so yes, community support is needed and deserved.
But her bottom line has no gender equity. Period.
Mia moglie likes the new hire cuz she is a sole-parent and says she is so pretty. Agree with those attributes.
So best wishes to coach Dana Takahara-Dias and please recruit gurls who can rebound without bursting into tears and who can take loud reprimands from a frustrated coach without the trappings of a half-way house to recover.
We need basketball players not cry babies….
Another thing, I was and remain critical of process and accountability, i never ranted for a favorite as wbc or mvbc.
get that straight!
Football & baseball r my sacred cows when it comes to coaches….I had things to say about basketball, but remained silent and supported the Bob Nash hire–not the parody of its process or hire or wishy-washy roll-over.
For now, the stage rightfully belongs to Coach DanaTakahara-Dias and Coach Charlie Wade….best wishes to both.
Two cents…I agree that the hiring process was flawed and I was really surprised that DTD was hired when just a few days ago her name was withdrawn from consideration due to “minimum qualification issues”. Having said that, now that she has been hired, I think we have to move on and hope that she will lead this team back to at least being respectable.
As for the three year contract issue, I’m not sure if that really means anything. Didn’t JJ get an initial 3 year deal and then in his second year he received a two year extension??? I could be wrong and I don’t know the details about DTD’s contract…so I will leave it at that.
Hiya Liz!…just been busy checkin’ up on the football chirrun.
Say did you notice a heavy influx of Apoalani family members in your neighborhood this past Memorial Day weekend? Yep dey waz makin’ all kine at the Waimea Plantation Cottages! Kaipo was dere drinkin’ loud and singing louder!
ST:
Excellent lead article for Coach Dana!! Makes me feel good about the selection; not the lengthy process!
For sure, I will make every effort to go see the Wahines play. Last time, it was in Klum Gym.
Kekoa- dang… missed the Aipolanis… I was at Turtles with Rotary.
Re wbb – I like the heal and improve mentality in the choice.
Whoops Aipoalani is the correct sp.
MIH:
Your #9 – I believe the “change(s)” have already begun from the time her selection was revealed yeterday as people and especially the current Wahine players began to have the “good feeling”.
This attitude, hopefully, will translate into the players working harder during the “off-season” and begin their network of talking to the local gals about coming to play for UH.
You know I just surfed over to the Warrior Beat to check out Ferd’s column and it was empty. No column. No picture. Nothing. Is the site under maintenance, or did Ferd check out? Anybody hear anything?
Just want to remind folks that Ronnie’s Return to the Islands gathering is still set for the 4th of July.
Location: Bay View Golf Course & Restaurant
Time: 1700 hrs. (5:00 PM) until 2200 hrs. (10:00 PM)
uuuhhh… those braddahz advertise.
They get those commercials that ask how did that elephant, buildings, buses, cars or food get to Hawaii.
Kekoa- Rajah dat. Ova.
Kekoa, Many marvel at Kapolei’s quick rise to gridiron prominence, unless ur ma’a to the surrounding communities and link the correlation to a growing DHHL community…..true?
My dad told me how, the Lee brothers, while at Kaiser, managed to tap into Waimanlo DHHL athletes….they took the prepbowl in ’78 with a busload of ‘nalo athletes.
#81
I like ST answer. Very straightforward, and honest in expressing his feeling on this.

I think a woman’s place in athletics is only in a nice cheerleading outfit. I agree that Jim Bolla did the right thing in kicking that player because he was so frustrated. Poor Jim Bolla… I hope he wins his lawsuit against UH… That’ll show Jim Donovan and Hinshaw!

Warriorfanny2,
That about right there son?
Website acting all funny again.
I was looking for a more detailed article about the hiring, but cannot find anything.
wf2- Kaiser took the Prep Bowl in ’79-’80 while riding on the coat tails of Kamehameha transfer Boyd Yap. Good times.
Yo! Mistah C… hows da Tsaiko Tsoftball Team shaping up?
#81 raises a point about MW that is well known–he spoke his mind. Especially when it came to ticket prices and a gouging n greedy UHAD.
MW was pansonic and thought ahead of his time.
He wanted to nuture his fanbase, while he had one, not rip it off. he wanted to grow, not retard.
Look, the problem is still there.
The gouging….the gap between a local-reality mindset and preconceived marketing models that work in Manhattan, Kansas or Gainsville, but not at Cooke Quarry or Halawa-Kai….can u say PPV?
WWF2 ~ (Since it’s been like the WWF on here lately, I decided to add the extra dubbya to your monicker). Hehehe..LOL!
The coaches had 14 players for ‘Scout’ to feature, but Chris told me that he was impressed with the entire team! He will see lots of HS kids over the total time he is here, so I’m sure he will be even more impressed by the time he puts it all in the can.
He enjoyed listening to the background on some of these kids, and how hungry they are to compete at the next level. Aahhh the passion of young athletes yearning for recognition.
They will be able to showcase their abilities in the presence of their peers tomorrow morning at SLS. It should bring out some record breaking performances!
A-Joe,
You know what commercial I miss?
That OLD Hawaiian Tel one that had “Far Too Wide” as the song performed by da braddahs Caz.
You know it’s the one that sometimes showed a grandma on the porch and her grandson away on the mainland… things like that.
That song always made me depressed for some reason. 😛
Hey lookie here…Koa Mahu has made another appearance. I haven’t seen him/her in a long time….although homey says that KK did last week…MWAHAHAHHAHHAHAA
Kekoa,
How has it been like the World Wildlife Foundation here?
Tsaikos on a mission to save animals? 😆
Careful you might get a nasty letter from their legal department.
Blogging in from SFO. Recession? What recession? Car rental lines go on forever.
Enjoying the discussion on wbb and mvb.
#134
So I’m reading and my first expression is that this persons retort is so reminiscent of a how a lawyer would write. It’s just the perception I get.
Whomever it is… get over it, there’s nothing wf2 post#119 that should rock anyone’s boat.
Kaiser Alum, those werent my times but I did jot-down 1979 than deleted….yup, I hear all the stories about that wonder team and the overwhelming yoke the cougars shattered to beat a once invincible Farrington foe in route to being a power…. and pop always mentions that Ron Lee is coaching sons whose fathers played at Kaiser for him….they had summer camp training and all the stuff later incorporated as part of crusader lore, including the early am runs on the beach.
wf2- Wow! You bringing back good memories. Mahalo brah. Just made my weekend!
Hmm… where is Jeff Portnoy lately???
roysan, let #134 stew–just another wannabee with a “i shot jesse james in the back” persona.
A sock-puppet without originality except to shoot the messenger and bury the message.
Like I said, these are UHAD minimal wage gophers.
For $8.50 an hour, they would arrest their mother.
Opala.
Ok thumbs hurt… Texting/blogging on a phone is quite cumbersome.
Gonna go take my second shower of the day now… Man this weather is HORRIBLE! 👿
Kazz- Chicken skin. =)

Qualified coach often times does not equate to a successful coach. Qualified also means different things to people. In real life qualified is just a subjective benchmark human resources uses to justify why they hired the wrong person.
COLT WATCH!
I just listened to Chris Cooley and his brother on the radio – Mike O’Meara Show on WJFK and got to call in. Next week, the Cooleys will be back WITH COLT BRENNAN.
http://www.wjfk.com/
Kekoa- I am coming to the Ronnie Bash – God-willing, of course!
wf2:
your #138 – MW also excluded the band, cheerleaders, and Alan the rubberman from doing his dance.
they were all back last year cause i think he knew it would be his last.
wf2:
someone mentioned that several of the better Waiane coast athletes were going to Kapolei on district exception and reason for the “sudden” emergence of their athletic teams.
Alan Hackbarth is a fire fighter now right?
That would make it hard for him to go to games on a regular basis.
Still regret missing that game in person, but it was a wonderful and nostalgic site to see him on TV doing his thing again one last time for Coach Wilton.
A-House – from the sounds of it, Kapolei High is also a school that is showing success working with kids with “different learning styles” which is why I was looking into it for a family member at one time.
Kazz- the vog is low on Kauai today but the humidity last night was a killer.
Yes- that MVB game (my first) was tremendous and firefighter Alan was awesome!
I haven’t really said much about Coach Takahara-Diaz yet.
Up to now I do agree that what the program needs is stability, but in the future the program will need to compete in the WAC again.
Honestly I am cautious and I won’t assume right away she’ll be able to recruit mainland players, but at the same time I do NOT believe right away that this was a “mistake” hire.
Yes her coaching resume at the Division I level in college leaves much to be desired, but take a look at the previous coach, you know, the angry fool with no self control that had a deeper college resume than Coach Takahara-Diaz and look what that did to the Wahine basketball program! 😯 My god, it probably still smells like sulfur in the Stanley right now.
With that being said, I TRULY wish Coach Takahara-Diaz the best and hope that the girls now believe that they can start winning again.
You know if I had to take a guess, the one thing that may be on JD’s mind is if between now and July 1 is all the WAC schools remain entact. And none of the teams jump over to the MWC.
With all the conversations the BSU and FSU Presidents had with the MWC last November-December if any of the informal talks turned into an agreement on both sides it would make sense that the departing schools do it before July 1 to be eligible for the 2010 season.
When I looked at the Boise blogs they’re still keeping this hope alive.
I’m thinking if the rug is going to be pulled out from under UH feet, like how BYU, Utah, Air Force etc did by leaving the WAC back in 1998, it probably going to happen soon. Or not happen for for awhile.
Keep in mind any time when all the big bosses gather together there’s always room for speculation. And JD, UH and the WAC commissioner know this. So this is why I’m hoping that this July 1 comes and goes smoothly and quietly without any teams leaving.
a-h, dunno about band, etc. but i do recall allan doin his thing in the aisle at a game i attended against penn st.during a holiday T (outrigger i believe)… i do recall the bowzos who were a contingent at most MVB games….and of course vili was there too in the year we took the national….didnt allan h. have issues w his employer over his popular dance performances?
JJ didnt allow our band to play haw 5-0, installed the cheers theme song, etc. ….and what does that have to do w MW wanting to lower ticket prices?
Kazz..#142…Tsaikos usually eat animals…MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
and I think #140 ..Wasn’t that Peter Moon singing Far Too Wide for Me…???
Hiya Mr. C…okay, the CC is going to be at Camelia McCully at 12 noon according to SteveM et al on here….ohhh, and that would be Wednesday, June 3…
Miss Lizzy ~ I got ‘cha down for a spotlight number with the band…and no it’s not your crowd pleaser, the National Anthem! You know they can follow you, so jez practice on your own in the shower or with Byron’s band in your garage.
Remember now, Pride never had a band to call his own, so you will have to work things out with him if you plan to sing more than one song.
Pisa signed with the Bears. He knows the coaches and excelled in their system as a rookie, so he should do well there. I’m guessing he signed a 1-year deal because he will be in a better position to look for a big contract after the season…the Rams released him too late to have a lot of options this year.
The other Chicago paper had more info.
Jake Ingram is splitting the reps with his competition at long snapper with the Patriots.
David Veikune was compared to a previous Cleveland LB, one who had an excellent career.
I feel bad for the Cleveland rookie players (including Veikune) which will have to “voluntarily” ride buses for 20 hours this weekend. They are in the middle of OTAs and they have to take a bus instead of fly?
Veikune has other rules to follow also.
Each SEC school is about to get a $6.4 million boost to their TV revenue. $17 million per year guaranteed for 15 years…wow.
Remember how Illinois played at the Rose Bowl instead of the Warriors in 2007? According to the terms of the new BCS TV contract, starting in 2010 the next time a non-BCS team makes a BCS game they will play in the Rose Bowl if one of the Pac-10 or Big 10 teams is playing for the championship! It would be awesome to see the Warriors in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2011.
I believe Aloha Shoyu does advertise……
Dont they run their ads on the jumobtron at UH games, the ones with skater Kristi Yamaguchi???
It has been nearly 10 years since the infamous-8 defected to form the MWC (6/30/99) and Boise State is the only WAC institution w near capacity….thanx to their singular success in football…..as far as da donks departure, the only Q remaining is WHEN?
There has been Benson scuttle-butt about replacements, always amusing, but the real issue seems to be in keeping several WAC members qualified in order to retain their D1A status rather than to worry about en masse defections.
The 1999 mutiny was the final tragic step in a pas de deux conspiracy but the reasons cited are still evidenced like a Kilauea flow.
WAC membership is still spread out over 5-time zones, more than the great Russian continent.
In these days of unstable fuel costs and a stubborn economic recession– while Hawaii has become the WAC kupuna it still remains its number one problem.
One thing we know for sure if JD and CB are in a huddle–you can bet the call will be, “same play on 1”.
Instead of the fans of WAC or MWC teams having to wonder which BCS bowl game their team will be sent to, they will know at least for that season that their team will go to the Rose Bowl. Of course, that assumes that a Pac-10 or Big 10 team is in the national title game, but that is a fairly regular thing. That would help travel plans and would be a huge boost for that team’s fans…
congratulations!!!!
On hitting that little white ball
…has me flustered. And I regress and think why I didn’t do better at golf. My personal best is 89. And once I started with 11 straight pars at Ala Wai, only to end up with a score of 101. But overall I’m probably a 100 shooter.
One time I was at the Ala Wai golfing range, some older man, who I learned later was quite famous was watching me hit the ball and he laughed when I told him my handicap–as if his laughter suggested I should be much of a better golfer than my handicap suggested.
So under his guidance I proceed to hit two buckets, actually fairly well. And I’m happy. And all smiling. Until the next day…where it’s back to the SOS-balls to the left, right, ground balls.. and my specialty duck hooks…and then after awhile I was so frustrated it was rapid fire shots..and then..of course.. one handed shots.
Did I forget to cock the wrist, like the old man taught me to? Probably so. Am I so hard headed and lacking in patience to strive to get better at the game of golf? Probably so.
And it frustrates me to no end. For I think I’m a fairly good athlete. Use to have the size and speed (6-1,230). Played every sport in HS (football, basketball, baseball, track). Have awards, medals to prove that I’m an athlete. Did years of skiing and skating. Played hockey. Trained with the soccer and gymnastic teams. Did all the karate stuff. Even have trophies in bowling. Could even dunk a volleyball… Yet I couldn’t do well in golf. And it pains me.
The times I go out with my friends and I watch how they hit the ball. Nothing fancy. Very sterile looking swings, and they don’t hit the ball very far. Yet they shoot in the low 80’s. I on the other hand shoot another 100.
When my friends say hang in there and practice more I just nod and mutter some expletive under my breath…yes, golf for my has been frustrating.
One of the few golfers that always spins a positive on his game is Tiger Woods. No matter, he will say something about what he did that was good.
I saw that recently at TPC Sawgrass.
Thats in public.
In private, Tiger is constantly working on his negatives to retool and improve his game. He often says, “some cant do that”.
Break it down and start from scratch.
If you can afford it–take lessons.
I golf with guyz in their 70’s and they are shadow swinging in the 19th hole lua.
It’s a great game of life that you must compartmentalize to succeed and can play, long after retirement….keep it kickin…
I think Committed Road Warrior expressed a voice of reason & it served to remind me that regardless of what certain hate-mongers, UH haters as well as low-class & no-class bloggers (those alluded to by Kazz & others) have to say, I have to avoid sinking down to their mudslinging level. That’s a point well-taken & I hope I cna live up to that. Granted there are some bloggers who obviously dislike / hate UH & things Hawaiian that only blog to get attention & irritate true fans. Still it’s difficult to totally ignore their irrational rants or ignorant / hateful / mean-spirited statements. I guess we all have to walk a fine-line.
Now I’d like to give my “2 cents” towards ‘2 cents’ opinion of the WBB search committee process. I don’t think Coach Goo being on the committee was a conflict of interest at all–his input & opinion is respected & invaluable. Naming an interim Coach & delaying the process would not yield “more qualified candidates” as you put it -I think they had anyone & everyone on that list (80+ wasn’t it?). I don’t think they were “desperate” to hire a female, although it would help the demographic & I’m sure the players appreciate it. As for your point about not having Collegiate coaching experienc, tht may have some validity. Still, does anyone believe that Chris Mclachlin wouldn’t be able to coach men’s or women’s college volleyball simply because he only coached at the high school level?? Baloney! I feel he would’ve been superior to Shoji or Wilton. I wish Coach Dana all the best & I don’t think it was a just a token hire–she was the best person for the job in their mind. The only thing questionable about the process was the constantly changing number of finalists & the deletion & addition of certain finalists. That does deserve some explanation.
wf2:
your #162 – the past 3-4 years Wilton let it be known that he did not want the band, cheer leaders and Allan H distracting his players and “band” (no pun intended) them from performing.
many a time we saw Allan H in the stands and people around him were encouraging him to get and do his dance. it was rumored that the Fire Dept, but not verified, did not want Allan to get hurt doing his dance. believe he once fell on the steps.
what I posted had nothing to do with lowering ticket prices – just wanted to “add” other things that Wilton did.
I do agree that not having Vili around was a good move as he was just to distracting and not a good mascot representative for UH.
anyway, itwas great to see the band and cheer leaders and the “rubber man” back at MVB games this year.
Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson are among my favorite writers.
Paine’s Common Sense published in 1776 is a must read.
In terms of Dana Takahara-Dias I like what Paine says,
“Time makes more converts than reason…”
In Jeffersonal thought, two messssages come to mind:
“…freedom of thought and freedom of speech are seperate entities yet one must compensate for the other” and
“a democracy is nothing more than rule by mob…”
Look, whatever 2 cents said, it was an honest opinion of thought and the price he pays for expression shouldnt intimidate his freedom to think it.
What i have noticed at times is a reluctance to accept differences of opinion when it goes against provincial thought on this website.
Of course, there are better residents….and they are the rule, not the exception.
(J)James,
“Far Too Wide” is a Peter Moon original I think, but I think The Brothers Cazimero did a version of that song just for that old commercial.
The UH “pep band” and the UH cheerleaders have every right to be at ALL UH spectator sporting events… well probably wouldn’t be so fitting at softball and baseball games though…
Tennis too… sailing… golf… yeah you get the idea, but for the revenue drawing events at the Stanley, they SHOULD always be there!
Especially the UH cheer squad. Their performances alone are stellar and obviously “championship-material” in their own right.
Kudos to Coach Mike Baker for all he has done with this squads over the years!!!
Watching ASU and Washington go at it in the Women’s College World Series of Softball and I’d LOVE to see Coach Coolen schedule either of these two teams in one of those “pre-season” tourneys at the beginning of the season.
The Wahine should be back to making another appearence in the regionals in about a season or two once the young guns start finding their bats and the team starts hitting like past Wahine squads.
ST, do you think Coach Coolen is gonna schedule some good OC opponents to get their RPI up this coming season?
Happy Birthday Uncle Augie T, from your pals, Alex and Noah Sakamoto
a-h, thanx for all the info n updates….as i recall it was my wahine cuz that dragged me to watch mvb at the stanley….they screeched relentlessly at their adoring-idols like groupie fanz….they should have ladies nite at the les and let them in free.
roysan16,
http://www.golftec.com/learningcenters/hawaii_golf_lesson.html
nothing helps like watching your golf swing on video, you may laugh or you may cry. location is at 510 piikoi st near ala moana. if you view golf as a challenge and not as a recreational sport, than you need to get professional help to break the 100 barrier. good luck
Congratualtions to Coach Dana Takahara-Dias
Hi!
Happy birthday Augie T!!! Funny guy.
Sweating it out today at the mid-80’s. Must be darn near unbearable over the hill for dj.
roysan16 – I’m happy to hit 100 and that is for 9 holes! Everything is relative. If you have all the moves down in the practice ranges, then it’s probably just being able to feel comfy and unrushed on the course. I’d practice a few holes after the hoards are gone and no one is pushing you to hurry up. Don’t know if you have a course like that where you are (not expensive) but we have Kukuiolono here.
protector- appreciate and agree with your comments about CRW’s comments. Mahalo.
layson, wf2
Thanks for your help. I did take 3 lessons. And the instructor said my problem is tempo, like bringing the club back slower. But then when I bring it back slower it looks like have Parkinsons and I have a hitch in my swing. And I shake. Anyway compartmentalizing the game, doing shadow swinging in the lua and going to the video place are things I have to try. Thanks again gentlemen.
Hi wafan!
jm265.233.9000 . . .
Weather for next week is going to be in the upper 70’s and low 80’s. Expect some drizzles on Wednesday morning. If you can wait until mid morning the clouds will burn-off and the days will be spectacular.
What days will the jm-clan be in Seattle? If it is going to be on a weekend maybe we can set something up for the Seattle area.

PISA SIGNS WITH THE BEARS
Greetings, Liz!
Busy weekend planned?
Lived in Kapahulu in my very young days. I do not remember much of anything. Not even the street name. I do remember a long (for me anyhow) driveway.
roysan16:
I wasn’t referring to you in my post #13, though I must admit that sometimes I have to skip some of your posts because due to the length of some of them, I get cross-eyed after reading through some of it.
I actually like your commentary. Even though you stay critical of the UHAD on some things like many people (including myself), I like reading your view on things. You present it without much of the personal dogma that plagues the posts of other commentors, and that’s a plus in my book.
I like the even-keel of your commentary, and look forward to reading it (when I can).
Keep it up!
And continuing on the subject of golf,
I just realized something. And I promise this isn’t a level…because even when I read it it sounds like it could be..anyway
Going back to my original post about the old man teaching me golf.. what he had me do that day was practice hitting the ball while he placed a dime behind the ball. And it worked really well (why do I think about this 15 yrs. later?)….Any way I guess my swing is coming down at a sharper angle. And the results were pretty good. And yet I never tried putting the dime behind the ball in practicing again…maybe I should be trying this to, no?
199
wide smile<me tk you.
roysan16 ~
My mom had the perfect golf workout routine. She took and old 3 iron and wailed away in our backyard on an old truck tire. She said it helped to make her grip strong and add firmness to her arms.
I thanked the Lord for that tire because otherwise that could have been me she would be swinging at.
Like Liz said, everything is relative.

me>laughing now that was funny
Good questions for Coach Dana.
And, hey, you may all pose them again. She’ll be our guest on the Warrior Beat Show Tuesday.
198- leaving now to do more Senior Project reviews at Waimea High. Then hope to catch Start Trek at Waimea Theatre tonight!
Awrite, ST!
Does anyone know what the requirements are to obtain a “certified” birth certificate?
The way it sounds, here at the WA-DOL, they do not believe I was born in Hawai’i.
DANG! After all that Obama foolishness by the few crazy Republicans . . . HA!
Well then.
“Live long and prosper.” The movie was awesome and sure explained a lot of questions I had since the series and movies.
Real Trekkies I know caught every single reference.
Liz . . .
Listen carefully for Uhura’s first name. I missed it. Shucks.
And, it is a loooong movie. Go shi-shi first.
Nyota
I too can relate to roysan16 @ #200. I think I met the same man at the range. He told me my problem was loft…..LACK OF FREAKIN’ TALENT.
I gave up…
Thank you, d1!
Turns out they did not mumble it.
In Bolla, the anti-Christ came first. Better times are ahead for sure. It starts with feeling good about the program, and the outpouring of positive sentiments over this hiring is encouraging.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL!
Happy birthday Princess Leila!!!
Anniversary? What kine anniversary?
Uhhhh, happy anniversary, instead to Doug and the Princess!
boyfriend/girlfriend kine.
Oh, OK…
happy anniversary.
Re: JJ
JJ got a five-year contract ($320,000 annually), but after the fourth year, he received a five-year extension ($800,000 annually). The extension replaced the original contract.
I ordered one for my son from the State of Hawaii’s internet site. You pay on line and they mail it to you, relatively quickly…for a state government entity.
http://hawaii.gov/health/vital-records/vital-records/vital_records.html
As for Coach Dana, what happened was she was on the original list of finalists. A ruling found she had equivalent experience to meet the minimum qualifications.
Then one of the committee members believed that Coach Dana would be ruled ineligible by human resources. Turned out, HR was never contacted. So she was added to the list, as originally planned.
Reports that she was added and then eliminated were inaccurate.
I was born in New York, so to get a copy of my certificate, the old fee used to be a dollar for every year of my life.
Wow that could get expensive for you as you age!
Congratulations to Coach Dara!!
Oops, I mean…
Congratulations to Coach Dana Takahara-Dias!!
Wonder what kind of coach Powderpuff would make?
Ooops…Rep. K. Mark Takai was on my karaoke group email list… but he replied from Kuwait taking a raincheck for the next bash… and asked me to tell everybody “Hi”!
Hope he posts here when he has a chance!
PowderPuff would be a great basketball coach. Although I hope she takes off her football helmet while on the sideline.
Rob25 . . .
Thanks!
Silly WA-DOL. I applied for an enhanced drivers license when I renewed the other month. All the paperwork went through. I even got the photo done — a good one, too! Then they asked for ID. I gave them my drivers license that had not yet expired (the soon to be old one). They would not accept it as a form of ID.
HUH?!?! What is up with that? It was their document, for heaven’s sake. The woman explained that since I was not born in Washington I had to get a certified birth certificate. I jokingly asked if she knew Hawai’i was now a state. She laughed and said something about Obama having to prove his citizenship to some crazy Republicans.
DOL=Department of Labor
???
wafan,
Sounds odd…didn’t you use your HI license as positive ID when you 1st got your WA license?
IIRC, HI requires a BC when you first get your permit.
CRW . . .
Department of Licensing.
Ah.
Thanks, wafan.
d1 . . .
Truthfully, that was waaaaay back in 1982 so I do not remember. I know I had to surrender my HI license, though. Had to do the written and driving test again. It was funny because the guy who took me out for the driving test spoke in a heavy Indian accent. Yep, sing-song and all. So I spoke back in the official language of Hawai’i.
We had a great time driving around Bellingham.
CRW . . .
Are they doing the same thing down there with the enhanced driver’s licenses for the border crossings?
I figure it will be a lot easier than needing a passport to get into and out of Canada.
wafan,
Since there is a record of your HI Lic there, and you’ve already established proof of identity in one state, there shouldn’t be a problem?
I smell a $ grab….
d1 . . .
That is what I think, too.
But, then the enhanced license is similar to a passport between the US and Canada. So, maybe that is why they need proof of citizenship. Still, you would think that I already proved my citizenship by having HI and WA licenses.
Or, is it possible for illegals to obtain a driver’s license?
Just really sounds odd. Maybe it really is the, “Is Hawai’i really a state or a foreign country” routine. Hmmmm, maybe she was not kidding about Obama needing to prove his citizenship. HA!
Or is she just upset because the Warriors beat the Huskies and the Cougs?

Re-UH student fees
To summarize this article from the UH student paper, Kaleo
For the price of I’d say 4 pizza or $50 a students the revenue generated would bring in about 2 million. The current deficit is 5.4 million. The yearly deficit for 2009 was I believe 2.1 million.
So what’s needed is for the students to ante up, which the $50 per student would take a big strain off the athletic budgets deficit. (2 mil)
Polls show about 3-1 students against paying the fee.
So this is what I’d do if I’m in UHAD shoes.
Along with the concessions on the books right now, like admission and transportation to sporting events–give them more concessions.
How? Simple. Partner up with all the businesses around UH, notably the eateries, supermarkets, cab companies, hotels, rental car companies, movie theaters, Waikiki shops, Ala Moana SC and the airlines–all the commercial entities that the students patronize and spend they’re money at.
And convince these businesses that the UH need help and support. And ask them if they’d go along with offering the students %5, 10%, 20%, 50% coupons. Sell them on this idea.
Then make a coupon book that has potential value of $500, $1000, $2000. Sell the students on the idea of the coupon book. Draw a pictures for them, show them the math, like every time they go out to an eatery or movie $2-$3-$5 dollars saved here and there would quickly add up to the $50 that they presently oppose paying. Have them assimilate the situation and it’s a win win for the students, and they’re helping the UH.
Even comp tickets to the business that help out.
This would work, but being tactful with the students is the first step. And more concessions, like this idea of a coupon book I believe might work.
2 down and 3 mor Senior Projects to go!
I got through to the Chris Cooley radio show today. He asked me to say Colt Brennan in my best Hawaiian accent. ???? I said “Colt Brennan”. The Cooleys are cool. Chris had very nice things to say about Hawaii!
roysan16 . . .
You and Jason should sit down with JD and figure something out.
I agree it is silly for the student body not to give their support. It really is part of the college experience! Heck, I even helped the WWU band at football games — played the frozen cymbals.
On the other hand, they are just like their folks who show up when the teams are winning and complain and criticize when they lose.
Roysan16,
I submitted a very similar plan to Jim Donovan while on a chat at sportshawaii months ago and he said he’d forward that idea to John McNamara.
A few days later I e-mailed John McNamara directly and he said he would bring up my suggestions when they had they marketing meetings.
Okay, I will ask. How does “Colt Brennan” sound in your best Hawai’ian accent? Mine sounds like this, “Colt Brennan”.
Anyone else want to give it a try?
vg kazz
I was impervious to your plan, but dey yo go great minds think alike, no?
This is nuts.
We broke 85 today. I am sitting here sweating. Every window and door is open. The sun has gone down and the breeze is still warm.
Second shower of the day coming up before bed.
wafan,
The topic of an Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (“WHTI”) compliant driver’s license, like an enhanced driver’s license you are currently trying to seek, raised some eyebrows here in Arizona when it was brought up a couple years ago.
Many of the state politicos in Arizona likened an enhanced driver’s license to “totalitarianism” and “a throwback to Nazi Germany.”
The 3-in-1 ID, as it was called down here, needed approval from the state legislature to start up. Needless to say the Republicans, who control the majority of the state legislature, shot this one down almost from the beginning.
So no, we don’t have an enhanced driver’s license option here. It’s still “in the works”. 🙄
Oh kazzy you should be in charge of marketing. I shua one great ideah brah.
koa mahu,
Huh? No props for roysan16? Gees…where’s the love? Whoops that didn’t sound right..nevermind!!
roysan16,
Yes good minds think alike! 🙂
Hopefully they will apply OUR ideas to the new athletics fee. When I submitted the suggestions to JD and JMac it was only presented as extras to the Manoa Maniac membership with levels of membership with more perks being available as the prices went up.
Of course the Manoa Maniac concept is on an optional basis, but the athletics fee would be MANDATORY so heck, if no can do anything about it, might as well appease the “angry villagers”! 😆
3 done, 2 more to go!
Off to work. See you guys later.
It is my understanding that the revolving debt is like a credit card bill.
You don’t actually have to pay it off now; you can keep making the interest payments until, well, forever.
I have serious concerns about paying a fee that pays off a debt. I mean, if they raised taxes so you could pay off Bear Stearns, would you be ticked off? Now if they actually spelled out what they would do with the money, that would be different.
That’s why I think Nestor Garcia’s plan to increase the city’s gas tax is kind of humorous. The claim is the money will be used to repair roads. Har. The tax will be used to pay for the shortfall from declining property-tax revenue. If UH students can see where the fee will go, they would be more obliging.
Wafan. My pronounciation sounded just like yours. The are inviting Colt to the radio show next week. Woo hoo!
I’ve always been puzzled by budget stories, anyway.
Does UH’s budget impact recruiting? I dunno. Maybe, maybe not.
If UH doesn’t have the money to fly in a prospect or pay for a scholarship, well, then, yes, the budget is a problem. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.
ST,
The last two Ka Leo articles “explained” what the fee would be used for. Offsetting costs of equipment, travel, and continuing to offer students promotional activites and free tickets while trying to minimize the loss of hosting those provisions.
But of course ANY time you present the question of “would you pay…”, there will be MORE people that would immediately vote “no” than the people that would actually take the time to think about what they may be paying for.
If the fee comes to pass soon, I think it would be right if the athletic department provides a free “accounting” (per request) of the revenue of the fees and what the expendatures were.
ST,
Speaking of DUMB ideas… what ever happened to possibly charging a tax on the mileage we drive?
Hmmm… a lot of people would be hounding their companies for mileage allotments! 😆
I once had a revolving line of credit along with the balances on my credit card to add to my own personal debt.
The monthly payments were not an issue, but I couldn’t stand knowing that it was sitting there. So I refinanced to close out that one line of “debt”.
Anyway, this is probably why I am obsessed with the issue of the athletic departments issues.
I know I know… I should just focus on the fan stuff of UH athletics and I do, but what can I say, I’m neurotic…
terminator salvation wasn’t that bad….
Re: “Polls show about 3-1 students against paying the fee”.
OK–speaking about polls and surveys in general, is the population sample representative of the whole? For example, if you are strongly against something, you are more likely to voluntarily respond to a poll than someone who doesn’t care or only mildly approves.
Take the poll in the lower campus at various games and the results could be 3:1 the other way.
I am not arguing the poll results either way, when I hear poll results, I get curious what the sampling population demographics were. In any event, no poll or survey result is conclusive unless 100% of the student population was polled.
For example, the HA site has polls and results. The results only indicate what the people who get on the internet and who go to the Advertiser site think. What about all those who don’t go online or go elsewhere?
Did you know I have almost a 100% correlation on my on-line Las Vegas logistics survey? Yup, everyone who responds are going to Las Vegas or thinking of it… and I have absolutely no data on how many people are not going. 🙂
Maybe instead of an “activity fee” they should just have a UH Student Sports Season Ticket… Semester I and Semester II. AND, they should make it available for all UH/UH Community College Students.
oh roysan. . .. sorry, yeah. just dat you was broachin one idea for legit discushun, one reasoned post, foah da good of da blog, yeah, and kazzy wanted one pat on da back. i ain’t one foah passin up not just a pat but givin one massage, lol.
If the students don’t want to pay the fee, they can pay regular admission like the rest of us. I’m for that.
Ahhh.. but then the students would stop showing up and we’d be back to square one.
How about having every student fee passed up going up for auction to the general public? Eh? Super discounted sports tickets to the general masses. Must sit in the student section, however, yell like crazy, and not complain about the rowdy kids next to them…
No it’s not even “bad”, it’s ok, just no sense of “closure” yeah?
Made,
It should be no wonder that the “fans” that get TV airtime during UH games are the ones falling asleep or knitting.
But then again it’s no fault of their own they got free tickets from their office.
mih . . .
Back in the early ’70’s friends and I tried to buy season tickets to the UH games while we were enrolled at a CC. We were told we were not UH students even though the CC is part of the UH system.
It did not make sense then.
I wonder if the same arguement is still used to force kids to buy general admission tickets rather than the discounted student tickets?
CRW . . .
The same concerns were raised here, too. But because so many WA people cross back and forth over the BC/WA border it just made sense. The same people who complain about everything complained about the enhanced license, too. Seems like they do not have anything better to do.

270 — who will take it to 300?
sometimes the most simpliest thng to do for the activity card is too just make it mandatory. after all, the school both academics and athletics are both being represented. anytime there are options and it involves money, people will balk.
happy anniversary to princess and doug
i wonder if layne boyer is related to dennis??????
wafan, how many more days or hrs till break time?????
kekoa, the tire drill with an iron is one of the oldest drills in golf and a proven winner that cost hardly anything as compared to today’s gimmicks which cost a fortune. the other thing is to make an elastic band loop and put it around your elbows when you practice your swing. get plenty things can do to improve without spending mucho dollars.
ok, wafan, the #300 horizon is close. going take break.
Did I just hear Neil Everett dished out some local love on tonights’ West coast ESPN broadcast?
“…next batter up is Fred Lewis, no relations to Ferd Lewis…”
Happy Anniversary the Princess and Doug!
I read where Jay Leno’s last show is tonight. He ran for 17 years. And Conan, who taking over for him is the show’s final guest. Does anyone know if the airing of the Leno shows here in Hawaii are live?
When Carson had his last year it was a sad night. I’m not feeling it for Leno, though. Sorry. But I’d watch the last year for sentimental reasons I guess.
Whitey ~ I was serious about the tire drill. That includes the part about fearing mom’s swing!
You can ask my Pops when you see him at the next t-gate, cause he used it as well. They were both very good golfers with single digit handicaps. In fact, I think I was their handicap. Mom would never partner with me in Chapman tourneys or Scotch doubles…ever!
year=show
live shows=same day telecasts
SteveM,
One *major* factor to consider for the UH student polls is that only a small fraction of the students actually vote in elections. Typically the people elected for ASUH only maybe 5% of the students (and I think 5% is high) vote for them. A similar small number would vote in an election about the student fee…and I’m guessing the same people who voted for the ASUH members would be the ones who would make up the majority of the voters for the student fee election.
It is sad that there is such poor turnout by UH students for voting on UH elections. If they held a vote on the student fee and less than 10% of the students voted, with a majority of those voters saying no, is that a strong statement that UH shouldn’t just impose the fee?
Oops, #278 should say “to the” instead of “the”
roysan16,
Why be sad about Jay Leno’s “final” show? In a few months he’ll be on every weeknight at NBC at 9pm in Hawaii. So, he’ll go from being after the local news to being on before the local news…

A prestigious University in Tokyo gave *free iPhones* to its students, and used its GPS to catch students who cut classes. Truants typically get others to sign in for them, but they don’t want to give their phones away since it has so much personal information (plus, nobody will be able to reach them then).
Interesting that the Palm Pre is the first non-Apple device that can sync with iTunes and iPhoto and make them seem to think the Pre is an iPod. Palm dodged the questions about how Apple would feel about that…but I’m guessing some lawyers will be quite busy for Apple and Palm! Calling Apple “practically a monopolist” while showing that your device can trick Apple-run sites to think it is an iPod is really inviting a lawsuit…

Happy Birthday Princess…
How old are you now?
Bet you weren’t even born when I was your age!
But now.. look at you…so driven, you’re already half my age!
Better slow down..
If keep that up and you’ll be just as old as me in no time!
Ohhh.. Scary thought!
We are all jumping on the Activity Fee bandwagon, but really, … how much of that would be slated for the Athletic Department. And what is the value of what they would throw in for that percentage?
293?

Bottom line is the activity fee is a tuition hike to benefit the athletic department. Since this activity fee is the norm at universities around the country, and our proposed fee is at the low end, students who decide to transfer from UH to another university to avoid paying the fee, will end up paying an even greater fee to the school they go to. Bottom line is UH will lose no students to this activity fee issue. I will be paying the fee for my son as soon as it is in place. Sorry students, but this is the real world.

8TH ANNUAL HAWAII H.S. FOOTBALL COMBINE
MAY 30, 2009, SAINT LOUIS SCHOOL
REGISTRATION IS CLOSED!!
Those already registered should arrive by 7:00 am.
I took this off of Doris site. And would bet that on the eve of the combine she’s probably as excited as the players. Do want to extend best wishes on behalf of the tsaikos and readers that things go well tomorrow.
For the players this is time to make your stock rise and have college coaches taking notice. So do your best.
Hope to be seeing some media coverage of tomorrow’s combine.
Duh…read that again.. it’s anniversary.. not Birthday.. lolo me…
Happy Anniversary Princess and Doug!
Time to shower and call it an early night… been writing too many emails today
Wafan,
It’s about time UH start offering better deals to the CC students. Doesn’t have to be free but give them an attractive break and start making them lifelong fans. Huge untapped market out there and many of them local kids who in a couple of years would go to UH if they had team spirit, eh?
What University can afford to lose students from their farm schools in this economy?
The SEC passed a rule limiting its members to 28 recruits in a recruiting class. They will try to get the NCAA to follow suit.
The SEC is also trying to get a national rule passed to limit graduate assistants to people who graduated less than 7 years before being hired. This would end a widely-used loophole for grad assistants.
The SEC money sure gives a nice boost to conference members. Considering that this number will go up by at least $6 million after the new TV contract starts next year, the conference could provide half of the Athletic Department money to some schools.
Hi I’m Justin I like your blog it made alot of sense. Do you take donations or is this free?
Good evening, Tsaikos! Glad to hear Pisa has another shot with da Bears. Rob25/ST: I would make a terrible basketball coach, so the helmet stay on. We’ll leave it to the pro…Congrats, Coach Dana!
Chicago Bears will have a nice linebacking corps with Pisa in the mix alongside Briggs and Urlacher. I hope he still wears #50. Any word on Travis Laboy lately???
Didn’t some news tonight report Singletary’s jersey (#50) is retired? Or did I have too much hairspray in my ears?
Howzit PowderPuff,
Hmmm…you may be right, in that case you would think Dick Butkis, Gale Sayers, Jim McMahon, Walter Payton, and Refrigerator Perry’s numbers would be in the same boat, yeah??? I think #50 suits Pisa cause #10 look too small when he played at UH. Just like when West Keli’ikipi wore #16, just didn’t look right on such a big dude… But ah, if the numbah is fo sho retired I wonder what number he going wear…?
good evening Pauoa Boy! are you still in Ireland?
or too many beers while watching the news 🙂
Singletary’s #50 has not been retired yet (although they should):
http://www.chicagobears.com/tradition/Uniform.html
Sup Ralph,
Ha I wish I was in Ireland, actually I’m in the same place as Frank. Things kind of slow today so I stay on my lunch hour trying to check out the blog and catch up on the NBA playoffs, etc…
Sawp Jason,
Das good to know, I hope Pisa can wear #50. You would think with all the greats that wore the Bears uniform they would have the guys numbers I mentioned above retired. But then again, that’s a handful of numbers. Same like 49ers, if Joe Montana, Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice, etc…
Okay, so hairspray and beer. Thanks guys…yes, Pauoa Boy, that’d be awesome if he can wear #50. Take care now, Pauoa Boy.
Good evening to all. Been lurking.
Pauoa Boy…Be safe!
Thanks PP, hopefully I back in time for catch couple football games, our WAC championship, and Bowl Game when I get back…see you there.
pssst.
ralph.
ralph
you around?
ralph?
yes al, ralph’s went me sshhh.
Howzit Pauoa Boy, you all stay safe over there.
Interesting that as you guys were talking about student fees, the NY Times had this article yesterday:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/30/sports/30colleges.html?_r=2&emc=eta1
I have so much to say on this topic, I could type until my fingers fall off; it would be better if you asked me in person. But I do have to say this: yes, the sample of UH students in the poll that was cited was extremely small. While available to all students, only a select portion of the student body responds to those things. I bet the Neighborhood Board elections got better turnout. So I don’t count those polls; now, if they were to do a serious random sample of the UH student population, then that might be something else. But I agree, I don’t think you can strongly consider the poll results because only certain types of people responded, and a small sample at that. Maybe if UH were to get students from mathematics, economics, communications, or other fields to do a serious random sample study, it might give the UHAD and ASUH something better to look at.
Also, I’ve heard in recent years that the CC students have not been able to purchase UH-Mānoa sporting events tickets, even when advertisements were on their campuses. I say if you are on O‘ahu and a UH system student, then you should be able to purchase student-priced tickets. Considering this: students currently get 5% of the seats at Aloha Stadium, and those sell out only for the big games; and the student sections at other events are never sold out. Should a fee be implemented, UH is looking at doubling the Aloha Stadium seat availability to 10% of capacity, and the Stan Sheriff Center seat availability to 5% of capacity. I doubt there will be student sellouts any time soon, unless the team is a serious winner. So why not give those CC students an option to pay the fee as well? Since they aren’t on the UH-Mānoa campus, I don’t fee that they should have to pay a fee like UH-Mānoa students, but they should have that option.
what’s up Al….been watching Youtube
“went me”??
you mean ‘wet me’?
or
you mean ‘stay go’
or

no on dvd.
watched the arizona state vs washington sb world series game…surprisingly, ASU has 6 starters from California, Washington has 4 Californians and 2 from Canada..both teams are not homegrown but rank in the top 10
Ralph: Spent the last few days cleaning up my room. Other than that, I’m not going to be doing much. If I get a job, then I’ll start lesson planning and prep for the Math Team. Lately, I’ve been doing some research on a potential trip to Portland, OR for MathFest 2009. Trying to see if it’s feasible on my budget to make the trip.
Hiya.
Fell asleep ad just woke up.
SteveM- Cons prolly come out more to vote than Pros or Neutrals… Esp on Kauai 🙁
Jason- I think neighbor island CC students should be able to get student season tickets too. Even DISCOUNTED season tickets to help defer the travel costs! 😆
al- which ichi movie?
Another blistering day to everyone!
Geez, another one forecast for 75+.
good morning wafan, you too Brew!
wafan you were just complaining about the snow, now its too hot… 🙁
any shave ice in your neck of the woods?
” . . . Ichi movie . . .” HA!
Sorry, just hearing it the way Japanese words are said up here.
I have no idea who Itchy-Roe Suzu-key is. But he sure plays well for the M’s! Funny how the Hispanic names are all said correctly, though.
Ralph . . .
Between 65 and 75 is just perfect! Once it gets above that — wow! Especially having to wear slacks while teaching. Inside the classes/labs the A/C takes care of the heat. But outside can be brutal!
No shave ice here. But there are places during community festivals that serve up sno-cones or, the funniest ones to me, Hawaiian Style Shaved Ice. I suppose I could always go up to the hills to collect some powder. Just have to be careful of the yellow snow.
kazz,
you’re right.
its all about the sequel(s)!
wafan ~ After I check out the football chirrun at PIAA Combine today, I’ll be sure to stop at Baldwin’s and force myself to eat some real shave ice.
Good morning Tsaikos.
Kekoa . . .
What, waterboarding is good enough? Now you have to eat shave ice in front of me? And just to really rub it in you will probably have the large with ice-cream and azuki beans, too.
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!
That is cruel and inhumane. Torture is just not right. I might have to contact the International Red Cross.
I hope you choke.
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Shucks.
. . . waterboarding is good . . . = . . . waterboard is NOT good . . .
Geez.
Great Morning All!
Kekoa,
Best place to watch is up on Papas’ Pali by the Chapel…unless you wanna hear the 40 times and stuff.
…..and no fo’get da Sno-cap on da shave ice (wafan- dat would be shaved ice wea you stay!)
al,
I get one Zatoichi DVD (stumbled upon at Wal-Mart, or someplace li’ dat).
Zatoichi: Challenged (1967) #17 in The Blind Swordsman Series
Let me know if you like borrow…
Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂
That idea about the student fee and discount coupon book: excellent.
Howzit d1, you fount of UH foe information, you! 😉 Keep it coming , fella!
