The next phase

When the clock struck “0:00” last night, the offseason officially began for the Warriors.

The Warriors’ active roster expands. As UH coach Norm Chow said: “The redshirts are no longer redshirts.” Quarterbacks Taylor Graham and Ikaika Woolsey, running back Steven Lakalaka, offensive lineman Leo Koloamatangi, defensive linemen Iuta Tepa and Mike Andrade, and cornerback Brian Clay are officially in the race for playing time.

The UH coaches, who had spent a large part of their time recruiting, will be focused solely on that area through the first Wednesday in February. Some of the coaches leave tonight for two-week recruiting trips. The targets: Linemen, receivers, corners.

Oh, and UH will need to find another punter and long-snapper.

Always good to end the season on a winning note…..with a 2-game winning streak, but JMHO that how this whole off-season (i.e., recruiting, coaching staff changes, player roster changes, off-the-field player discipline issues, etc.) goes from now…..through Spring Ball and next summer….will probably be a good indication of how much the Warrior players have bought-in (or not)…..to the coaching staff and their philosophies & methods…..to indicate to what degree the team dynamic…..particularly among the offensive coaches and players…..will improve (or not)…..and translate to the field for next season’s home opener against SC.

    Not being a pessimist…..nor obviously an optimist…..just a realist.

Other true frosh scholie players who redshirted this past season:

    – WR Justin Alo

    – C/OG Kiha Sai (due to injury)

    – FB/TE Ethan Watanabe

…and non-senior scholie players who sat out a good portion of (if not the whole) past season with injuries:

    – RB/WR Samson Anguay

    – WR Justin Clapp

    – WR Trevor Davis

    – OG Ben Dew

    – FB Dustin Elisara

    – DT Calen Friel

    – WR Allen Sampson

    Here’s another interesting point….

With Miah being the only senior scholie WR done after this just completed season, interesting that the receiver position is identified as a targeted recruiting priority….with 2 recruits (Kemp & Polk) already verbally committed. Beginning to sound like not all the current non-senior scholie receivers will be returning next season. Hmmmm…..

  22. QB (no) depth chart. December 2, 2012 8:52 am

….. QB depth chart looks awfully thin. My hope is that a JC QB, who can play in

this system, will fall outta da sky, and compete in Spring Camp.

    1. Taylor

    2. Ikaika (lacks game experience)

    3. You know the rest of the story(facts), based on 2012.

  23. kapakahi December 2, 2012 8:56 am

Didn’t forget about DT Moses Samia.

Just hoping that Moses can apply for medical redshirt year….to regain back another year of eligibility.

Hoping the same for Anguay, Dew, Elisara, and Friel too….since they already redshirted before this season. Not sure about Clapp though.

  25. Chicken Grease December 2, 2012 8:58 am

A Grease believes it was McNamara who said, on the most recent PBS Hawaii Insights show regarding the UH athletic program, that the first week pf December would see the announcement of the new UH athletic director.

Well that week is THIS week. So, fasten yer seat belts.

Hope we all might be surprised and be able to congratulate . . . Mr. Stephen Tsai.

  32. Shoko December 2, 2012 9:06 am

First and foremost, I just hope the O-line improves. It remains to be seen whether Graham is as durable a QB as Schroeder. Graham has suffered season ending injuries in the past.

  33. RedZone December 2, 2012 9:06 am

The way I see it is that we are on a 2 win streak. Just got to keep it going.

ST what up with the greyshirts and others?

Long snapper so important. I think the bad snap contributed to Fairbairn missing the fieldgoal which would have tied the game.

  34. wahine sports fan December 2, 2012 9:07 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Wish the coaches success in their recruiting efforts.

Time for the boys to reflect on this season, look forward to next, but, most importantly, study hard! Finals coming up soon…

Thanks to the tgate crew for another great season and now we move into the next phase of the Tsaikos life cycle. 😆

January marks the end of the college football season and the final movement of the Tsaiko habitat, this time going from the stadium and tailgate zone to that of the buffet line and Karaoke bar. It is here where the Tsaiko will do one of two things: load up on and store excess food in preparation for the upcoming UH football season, or partake in Karaoke as a way to channel their boisterous voices and cheering for peaceful purposes. Karaoke allows the Tsaiko to yell, have fun, and show off when not in a football atmosphere, while the buffet line allows the Tsaiko to gorge on massive amounts of food between now and when they make their return to Aloha Stadium.

  41. kifi December 2, 2012 9:13 am

  45. kapakahi December 2, 2012 9:30 am

Other than DL and maybe OL, very understandable why the CB position is a high priority recruiting position…..especially if Mike departs early….’cuz probably can’t afford to move JHT back to CB….with safety position rotation also apparently limited….to Jackson, JHT, Clay (with Poueu-Luna & Sellers both MIA at the end of the season after being one-time starters).

However judging from his PT the last few games, looks like #23 Dee Maggitt moved up past Grimes and Phillips in the CB depth chart going into Spring Ball.

    Also hoping that….

    – Brian Clay is now adjusted to playing CB….after playing safety before this redshirt season.

    – Ronald Fields & greyshirt Anthony Pierce both end up as a Warriors next semester.

    – Demo can land some more secondary talent from the Sunshine State for NLI Day.

    – Coach can retain Daronte’ Jones for coming seasons.

  46. Kekoa December 2, 2012 9:36 am

Are we sure that we are out of long snappers from the Ingram Ohana? Has anyone made a final sweep of the family tree?

Mahalo to Na Koa for sponsoring the reception for UH FB Alums last night prior to the game.

Mahalo to FB Alum Kelly McGill. We find out last night that Kelly was providing meals for the coaches on the long Sunday afternoons/evenings as they broke down the game ‘films all season long.

Kelly was one of the FB Alums that kept the FB Alum spirit alive all through the years by helping to sponsor an ‘unoffical’ FB Alum reception prior to last games of the seasons.

season ticket renewals and the ‘priceless’ inner-circle parking near the Anuenue snack bar are again in order for me for 2013. in the meantime, i’m checking out the hawaii bowl with coach jones’ smu mustangs. supporting the bowl is paramount, no matter who plays.

  70. Stephen Tsai December 2, 2012 11:50 am

  72. cocobean December 2, 2012 11:51 am

    The future is bright.

Future teams will be built on the foundation laid by this year’s team. To say this was a transition/rebuilding year is an understatement. Chow basicly demolished the program as it existed. The shock of adapting to a new culture affected everyone. Players, supporters and fans all had different reactions to the changes.

One thing is clear for next years team. Chow’s rules on how the construction will proceed are laid out. Either buy in or cash out.

I haven’t looked at next years schedule but I am confident the team will improve on this year’s record.

  73. Stephen Tsai December 2, 2012 11:53 am

    Next year’s schedule is tough.

USC. Road game to Oregon State. Mid-November trip to Navy.

But I think the focus should be on the league, and the league won’t be as good with Boise State and San Diego State heading East. Maybe.

Utah State and San Jose State had good years, but put it into the WAC perspective.

  74. 99club December 2, 2012 1:05 pm

Just heard that Northern Illinois of the MAC busted the BCS and will play in the Orange Bowl. That means the rest of non-AQ conferences get a small piece of that, doesn’t it?

  75. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 2, 2012 1:09 pm

San Jose while in the WAC still played some tough schools and MWC schools.

Their only losses were against Stanford 17-20 and Utah State 27-49.

They beat Colorado State, San Diego State, Navy, BYU, and La Tech.

If SJSU were in the MWC this year, I am pretty sure they would be in the upper crust. The same for Utah St. (Losses to Wisconsin 14-16 and BYU 3-6 and wins against Utah, Colorado State, UNLV, La Tech, SJSU).

  76. rodney December 2, 2012 1:43 pm

another really nice schedule next year….thanks alot!!!!

  77. Chicken Grease December 2, 2012 1:47 pm

Thought a Grease was hardcore (like you care) here we go:

    • Next season, team should use all black uniforms (whenever possible; road games would have be white jersey, but CAN do black pants). We’ve seen what wearing white pants can do. a Grease said long time a’eady, GET RID OF ALL WHITE AS POSSIBLE ON THE UNIFORMS (replace with, say, light silver, yeah). WHITE COLOR BAD LUCK IN ASIA/PACIFIC. YOU WANNA CRITICIZE CHOW ABOUT SOMETHING THIS IS IT. Oh, sorry for bold and all caps.

We go back to 50% white or more uniforms and (Lordy) go back to that d@mned Rainbow, get ready to have anotther season like this one; or Von Appen’s, and another another season like this one; or Von Appen’s, and another season like this one; or Von Appen’s . . . you get the picture.

    It’s that simple.

It’s like doing the same sin over and over and over and over again when you know God’s watching (which is all of the time).

    • MIKE EDWARDS, MIKE EDWARDS, MIKE EDWARDS, MIKE EDWARDS DEFENSE is better than Manti Teo defense.

    # # #

  78. Chicken Grease December 2, 2012 1:50 pm

Please say more about it, I take it there’s been a good response from the alums? How complete do you feel your contact list is?

  84. A-joe December 2, 2012 2:50 pm

ST- can you start gearing up and giving us any scoops and tidbits on any directions and interests of recruits coming out from Chow’s office. Also keep us up to par on the players on campus that are starting to prepare for next season.

    Can’t wait!

  85. GA Warrior December 2, 2012 2:54 pm

Unfortunately our outlook will continue to be poor and unpromising until Chow’s time is done or he massively changes his way. And just looking at the QB situation where he changes for only one game, gives only one guy a chance and his continued blind faith in SS is a sign of his willingness to make any necessary changes. I am happy for the seniors and the team, they dont deserve the mess Chow created, but at least they get to experience a couple of wins. That said, the victories came against such sub-standard competition, only getting 23 points against a SA team that was putrid is pathetic. What an extremely disappointing season. I called it back in the summer (4-8) and I dont see things getting better to see dramatic improvement until we can get ride of Chow, for a coach with so much experience I never seen a head coach so out of touch and how much the game has passed him by. For the sake of the players, I hope he eithers steps down or hires a OC worthwhile.

    DC Warrior

I spoke at length last evening with Na Koa Prez Scott Kaulukukui & Board Members Mike Perkins and Mike Biscotti concerning the contact list. There are several organizations out there but are ‘semi-undergound: Mature Bows and Joe Rainbow.

I will be sending along the contact info so the NK Alum committee can compare data.

It has been an uphill struggle for Letterwinners and Na Koa to recruit new members who are UH Athletics Alums. This has not been for a lack of effort.

I can only urge Tsaiko participants who know or meet UH Athletics Alums to join one or both of the groups as both Na Koa and the Letterwinners Club are only there to serve and support UH teams.

  89. d1shima December 2, 2012 3:20 pm

Hey Dpk! Final TG was a gasser eh! Was great to see you there. That’s the way to end a season. Cranking out *Positive Vibes.*

The Warriors played past most of the negative grumbelers, but ST was reminded by Robert Kekaula yesterday that the blog has not completely rid itself of them. Good for Stephen to remind him that we usually maintain our share of the fair minded folks by a solid 90%.

As blog archivist SteveM reminds us in post#229, “The basic 5 F’s keep us together today…just as it brought us together 6 years ago.”

  93. Whats up December 2, 2012 4:09 pm

I believe in letting the mid majors get a chance but the ESPN moral outrage is right. I believe that there are better Non AQ teams than NIU. Boise State, Fresno State, SDSU, SJSU, Utah State, La Tech and Tulsa to name a few that could easily beat NIU. I remember in 2008 Hawaii vs Georgia but Hawaii was ranked in the BCS top 10 and beat a great Boise State team. Not ranked #15 and beat nobody. This years #3 Georgia Team reminds me of that 2008 #4 Georgia team, loaded with NFL talent and I would hate for NIU, Boise State, Fresno State, SDSU, SJSU, Utah State, La Tech, Tulsa or even BYU to play Georgia in a BCS bowl this year. It would be a remix of the 2008 Sugar Bowl, NIU is lucky to be playing Florida State and not an SEC team in a BCS bowl this year. But thats going off topic. But regardless, NIU is going to hang in the first half but get whipped by Florida State 63-17 in the end.

  101. wafan December 2, 2012 5:06 pm

    12 more wake ups.

    Nytal!

  103. el burro sabio December 2, 2012 5:09 pm

Louisiana Tech turned down a great prom invitation and now have no date for the dance.

  104. Chicken Grease December 2, 2012 5:10 pm

Uh, wafan. A Grease is in the passenger seat. Hot chick driving. Accident happened already, hahahah.

  105. Chicken Grease December 2, 2012 5:15 pm

Saw ambulance pass by (under one of the Aiea overpasses).

    F__k traffic.

  106. Chicken Grease December 2, 2012 5:35 pm

Was construction. Weekend pay. Hope they . . . ahhhhhh, a Grease better not say. But, he can think.

  107. cocobean December 2, 2012 5:52 pm

    Heads up.

CG brace yourself for the Heisman hype that’ll kick into full gear this week. Johnny Football is the clear favorite and probable winner but never the less you can expect Manti to get a big media push.

Don’t throw any hard objects at your TV when a show is profiling Manti. Just change the channel. You can always let off some steam by blogging your “peelings” here.

Heh, appreciate a cocobeans’ concern, but, no need worry about a Grease; a Grease has a cable package better than most mortals’ own (watching final season ep’ of Boardwalk Empire on HBO right now). And,so, yes, a Grease avoided that Hawaii News Now junk they had on a Teo; they wonder why they had to converge two or three lousy networks into one main network and still can’t beat KHON in the TV ratings. It’s stuff like that. And constant Guy Hagi. (cripes, until we get snow, we really don’t need so much weather news.)

  112. Derek December 2, 2012 6:42 pm

If Sean Schroeder was still at Duke he would be going bowling. Also, Ryan Hall.

First pass at the starting QB, pending any further developments. Just my opinion.

    1) Taylor Graham

    2) Ikaika Woolsey

    3) Aaron Zwahlen

    4) Schroeder

    5) Higgins

    6) Shutter

    7) Ewaliko (projected to play another position)

How can all the QBs be on scholarship? Something’s got to give.

  113. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 2, 2012 6:59 pm

    Derek,

I’m guessing that Zwahlen’s scholarship doesn’t go into effect until he returns from his mission. Or maybe he takes online Outreach courses. Hmm.

  114. al December 2, 2012 7:01 pm

Kifi…Hawaiian’s been flying to Sydney for 10 years.

next year they will also fly to auckland.

  115. al December 2, 2012 7:02 pm

    isn’t Higgins a walk-on?

  116. LizKauai (iPad) December 2, 2012 7:39 pm

Hiya. Hope everyone is having fun at the luau!

  117. kev-1 December 2, 2012 7:41 pm

    Grease,

Of course we’re good! We just disagree. I’m cool with it as long as you realize that you are wrong. 😀

Kidding, of course. Another thing I disagree with you on is the all black. I like white and all green. Actually, I am more in favor of a different combo every week. Bring back silver. Introduce chrome, etc. Flourescent . . . uh oh. I am all for it. All black? Once in a while like everything else.

  118. Kevin December 2, 2012 8:33 pm

    Couple of notables:

    Ben Clarke – Offensive MVP

Paipai Falemalu and Haku Correa as co-defensive players of the year.

Of course… Mike Edwards as MVP of the year.

  119. Kevin December 2, 2012 8:34 pm

Props to Stretch and Powderpuff… AND the UH Marching Band for being.. (what I thought) the REAL busy bodies today at the luau.

Stretch and Powderpuff all over the place making sure things ran well and the UH Marching Band were serving EVERYONE their meals.

  120. Slugger December 2, 2012 8:45 pm

Mahalo to the UH Marching Band!

    Great job, Stretch & PowderPuff!

Thank you for arranging the table, Sailor Blue!

Congrats to the players & to the team. Virtual (((HUGS))) to all of the guys for doing their best. See some of you at Graduation!

Nice to meet more of the coaches at the luau.

  121. PowderPuff December 2, 2012 8:55 pm

Kevin and Slugger, oh my gosh…please give all the credit to Stretch. I didn’t do anything for the luau, honestly. Thank YOU both for being there…and nice to see the rest of the Tsaikos too: you two, SailorBlue, Mrs. SailorBlue, koakane, Pomai, (j)j, jason, d1….oh no, I’ll probably forget someone, but ah…you guys can look out for the MidWeek photos. 🙂

What a great night for the Warriors and especially the Seniors. Mike Edwards…you DA MAN! 🙂

  122. d1shima December 2, 2012 8:58 pm

Bravo to Na Koa, and especially PowderPuff and Stretch, for a really nice evening.

Let’s hear it for PowderPuff! clapclapclap!

Let’s hear it for Stretch! clapclapclap!

Thanks again to SailorBlue for making the arrangements.

Let’s hear it for SailorBlue! “Go Navy, Beat Army!”

  123. PowderPuff December 2, 2012 9:01 pm

Oh geez, sjmacro and myki!!!!! Yes, thank YOU all for being there tonight. It was Nā Koa’s first year doing the on-campus lū‘au, and hopefully it’s the start of a new tradition. Did you know the freshman players did the setup this morning? Breakdown was incredible….so local style, everyone pitched in. I even saw ST carrying a table!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least at 9-3, La Tech had a bowl invite… the last time a team in D1 college football went 9-3 and got 0 bowl invites was 2001 … hmm… 🙄

  125. Stretch December 2, 2012 9:11 pm

    Good evening Tsaikos!!

Thanks to those who joined us for the Luau tonight. I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves. It was the first year doing this and there are some things that could have been better. Please email me and give me some feedback, good or bad, so we can make this an event that everyone will want to attend in the future.

  128. gobows December 2, 2012 9:22 pm

#114 is the use of computers allowed while on a “mission”?

  129. 3-Prong December 2, 2012 9:23 pm

So how was the food tonight. Pure Hawaiian or Hawaiian w/some multi cultural supplements?

  130. wasabi December 2, 2012 9:28 pm

127…email address please? Got info from attendees…

  131. el burro sabio December 2, 2012 10:07 pm

    Kevin,

No sense get invited if you turn it down and end up staying home!

  132. LizKauai (iPad) December 3, 2012 12:10 am

    Mahalo, Ke Akua

Mahalo for inspiring ST to start the Blog – which led to the Tsai-ko Ohana- whose support for the Warriors expanded to UH Athletics.

Mahalo everyone for becoming a force for positive action, and for serving with joy and love and all the good things that come with unselfish efforts.

    Blessed to be a Tsai-ko.

    GO WARRIORS!

CG ~ The metro weather people on each of the stations are relentless. I now feel like I have a PHD in meteorological science. Ask me all about the “upper level highs!”

As you mentioned Guy Hagi, I thought about his style of reporting. Besides being dull and boring, he gets 3 shots at you. Once at the top of the hour, then the he performs the full Doppler experience, and one ‘final look at the weather at sign off. Since he weathered you all eve, his voice starts cracking and squeals like a 10 year old girl by 10:15 PM. I kinda wish Kim G. took him with her wen she retired.

Dan Cook does a good job in the morning, but weather on the ‘5 EVERY 5,’ is crushing my senses! His sense of comic relief can only last so long. I kinda wish Kim G. took him along with her husband wen she retired.

All the weather women are not hard to look at…just not every 5 minutes.

Remember back wen we got the HI, the LOW, the chance of rain and wind speed? The news anchor did it in 20 seconds, pau. We do have the 24 hr. weather channel after all, use it if you really wanna know the exact science.

Ok pau my weather rant…goin’ Tundah & rain for sure now.

  134. wafan December 3, 2012 3:03 am

Hope everyone has a super Monday!

  135. wafan December 3, 2012 3:11 am

    Kekoa . . .

That is the name. Over the summer he sounded like a kid who just entered puberty. Did not like to listen to the almost over dramatic reporting. If one is spending the day at the beach, mall, where ever, why is the barametric pressure change so darn important?

Just ACCURATELY tell me what it is going to do today and for the next several days.

  136. Stretch December 3, 2012 3:33 am

131 – wasabi – email me at stretch6592 at yahoo. Thanks.

How was the attendance for the Luau. Congrats to Warriors who took home some hardware and of course, to Mike Edwards for all his contributions this year.

Looked like a sellout to me. I heard 700+ being mentioned.

Barometric pressure is important to us fish breeders…

    Just sayin…

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Happy Monday and Congrats, Warriors!

I didn’t watch the Instant Replay but headed out for the stadium right after the play. I thought Murray mistakenly threw a checkdown that allowed the clock to expire.

The debate was to spike or not to spike.

  142. 3-Prong December 3, 2012 5:57 am

Matt Barkley on Dan Patrick Show said that Manti was put in a good position and plays are funneled to him. Hinted that he would have voted for Johnny Football based on stats. Again based on stats Colt Brennan should win a Heisman throwing for 5000+ and 58 TD. Award should be for more than stats.

  143. 3-Prong December 3, 2012 6:04 am

134 Kekoa and CG: I’m with you guys on Hagi. Not a real fan of his “splashes” and “sprinkles” desciptions. And that mouth thing he does at the end……..arrrrg.
