The long(er) goodbye

The WAC reached an agreement with Nevada and Fresno State in which both schools will remain in the league  — in all sports — through June 30, 2012, with each ponying up $900,000 in exit fees.

It’s a compromise.

Both schools don’t have to pay the $5 million apiece the WAC feels it was owed, they save on lawyer fees, and they get to go where they want to go, anyway.

The WAC gets more time to reorganize, and, hopefully, it will use its share of the exit money to hire a recording secretary. Mental note: Do not hire the WAC to write pre-nups. What’s more, because Nevada and Fresno State don’t have votes on WAC matters for another year, the league could have “Make Fun of Nevada” events, and there’s nothing the Wolf Pack could do about it. (Wouldn’t it be interesting if  the exit fees were  paid with those large checks that could be held up during halftime?)

For Hawaii, it gives athletic director Jim Donovan and his committees more time, up to June 2011, to figure out if it wants to stay, go, half-stay/half-go, or do the hokey-pokey and turn it all around. (Side note: Everybody says UH would have  immediately accepted if it received the same offer from the MWC that was made to Nevada and Fresno State. Accept? Probably. Immediately? Not so. UH would have had public hearings and committee meetings and feasibility studies and more hearings and more committees and, after a while, the MWC would say: “Uh, you got Utah State’s number?”)

But I digress.

Anyway,  next summer, the landscape should rock and roll some more, with the Big Ten, which really is a big 12, grabbing some Big East teams, and then the Big East raiding another league, which in turn pulls TCU from the Mountain West, which will have the MWC looking for another WAC grab and …

Well, it’s not over.

Kudos to Brent Rausch, still UH’s No. 2 quarterback, who volunteered to work on the scout team yesterday. The Warriors wanted to get some reps for freshmen David Graves and Cayman Shutter. Rausch decided he would be more helpful portraying Idaho’s Nate Enderle during defensive drills. Rausch flourished with the scout team, teaming with wideout Darius Bright, who is redshirting this season.

In yesterday’s blog, a reader cited a comment that he took from Na Koa’s Web site. Highlights of Na Koa events are available on the organization’s Web site.

From Boise State:

Boise State Head Football Coach Chris Petersen will be available via teleconference with the Hawai’i media this Monday (Nov. 1) beginning at 2:00 p.m. (MT). This will be the only time Coach Petersen will be available prior to the game for the Hawai’i media.

Also as a reminder, Boise State players are unavailable for media interviews.

Reading through the settlement, some interesting tidbits:

    1. Fresno State and Nevada do *not* need to admit that they did anything wrong.

    2. Fresno State and Nevada receive their FULL SHARES of WAC conference revenue for the 2010-2011 academic year. That means they get full shares from what BSU is leaving behind (the $1 million BSU isn’t taking and the $3 million from the BCS if BSU makes a BCS bowl).

    3. Fresno State and Nevada have to be treated like any other WAC team until June 30, 2012…so, no taking home games away from then or any other punishment.

    4. Fresno State and Nevada, and all of their employees, cannot be sued by the WAC.

    5. The WAC pays its own lawyer fees…which will probably reduce the payout by some number.

Donovan is an honorable guy and would have paid what UH owed.

Of course, this would have come after feasibility studies and meetings and committees …

I’ve known Donovan for many, many years. He is a 12-steps-ahead thinker. Sometimes he’ll have arguments with me about conversations that have yet to happen. He’s not spontaneous, which is one of his assets. Whatever decisions he makes have been thought out for a long time.

  19. papajoe2 October 28, 2010 6:45 am

I don’t think UH could have accepted if MWC offered before Nevada and Fresno because they would take too long to figure out where to get the $5 mil by-out. I think the state would be outraged, with all our other money problems. This would have changed if the offer would be made before UH signed the buyout deal. UH probably wouldn’t have challenged the WAC in court and just paid the fee if it could raise the money.

  25. Stephen Tsai October 28, 2010 6:58 am

Ostrowski is in the plans for next season.

UH feels comfortable with the wideouts — Royce Pollard, Billy Ray Stutzmann, Joe Avery and Darius Bright. As for the slots, Allen Sampson, Ostrowski, and Samson Anguay get the first looks.

They also could get creative and move Bright inside, or pull Bubba Poueu-Luna to offense.

Lots of things to think about in the offseason.

Whatever we do, we gotta be ready from game one, next year. Need to start the season with a win in another payback game. Good to be charting our course for next season, since so many big names graduate this year.

But, of course, we need to continue with what we’ve got going right now. We need to take care of Idaho first. Make a huge statement and continue to clean up our play.

  28. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 7:10 am

  29. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 7:14 am

If TCU does get pulled away, I hope we’re paying attention to LaTech too. We better have teams in place now for what may happen shortly down the road.

  30. Old Diver October 28, 2010 7:14 am

I don’t think everyone thinks UH would have immediately taken the MWC offer like Fresno State did. There is a reason people don’t respect Fresno State as an institution of higher learning. While I have been critical of Hindshaw as a leader, she isn’t stupid. If the MWC invited UH before June 2011 I believe UH’s actions will be swift.

  31. Garret October 28, 2010 7:14 am

This article about BSU leaving the WAC puts things in perspective:

The benefit would be offset initially. Boise State would forfeit its 2010-11 WAC revenue, estimated at $1 million to $1.5 million, and likely pay an entry fee of $1 million or more to the Mountain West.

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/2010/06/04/1216770/bsu-move-could-be-worth-millions.html

So, the MWC normally charges an entry fee of $1 million, but BSU, Fresno, and Nevada don’t have to pay it (several announcements by the MWC have stated that) since Fresno/Nevada have to pay the WAC’s exit penalty.

That means that Fresno State and Nevada were supposed to pay $1 million next year to the MWC, but instead they will pay $900k in installments to the WAC. They come out *ahead* financially with this deal and basically get an interest-free payment plan from the WAC.

    Benson sure “punished” the defectors…

  32. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 7:15 am

Actually, we also need to beat Utah State, so as to keep them from looking overly attractive to the MWC, should they come looking for another replacement not named “Hawaii”.

  33. Pomai October 28, 2010 7:17 am

Benson what a donkey!!! But then again he is a Boise kind of guy

  34. Shoko October 28, 2010 7:18 am

    Morning folks!

Just read this about the exit fee for FSU and NEVADA.

Fresno State and Nevada will each pay $900,000 to resolve all claims of the WAC regarding their departure. First payment per institution is due Aug. 1, 2011 in the amount of $180,000; second payment is due Aug. 1, 2012 for $180,000; third payment is due Aug. 1, 2013 for $180,000; fourth payment is due Aug. 1, 2014 for $180,000; and fifth payment is due Aug. 1, 2015 for $180,000.

Benson also said Nevada and Fresno State would be subject to forfeiting its WAC distribution check for the 2011-12 season, which last year was $1.4 million. That means both schools will lose up to $2.3 million when making the move to the MWC.

    Be back later…

  35. Shoko October 28, 2010 7:20 am

Could have sworn that the forfeit of the entry fee will go against future revenue payouts in the future once they join.

  36. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 7:23 am

    #34… YES!!!

But, does that mean that the new teams will get some of this WAC Paycheck? If they collect from their first seasons, they better have some sort of minimum time in conference, before being allowed to move to another conference.

UH, as senior member, should have some sort of grandfather clause to not have to pay anything for keeping the conference together for so many centuries!

  37. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 7:24 am

#35… I read that for Utah and Colorado upon entering the PAC28, but not sure about the MWC.

  38. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 7:25 am

Okay, I better get out to the park before the kids get mad! hahaha!

  39. expat October 28, 2010 7:27 am

I was composing a post about how odd the WAC landscape was going to be after Fresno and Nevada leave but some flash on university of Denver’s website crashed safari.

    Anyway,

    Idaho

    SJSU

    Hawaii

    Utah State

    NMSU

    LaTech

6 schools in 6 states. Only Idaho and Utah are even adjacent states.

Idaho and Utah State are closest to each other at 615 miles driving. La Tech is almost 1,000 miles away (driving) from the next closest school, NMSU.

    That is messed up.

The Mountain West next year will not be that much better off with 8 schools in 7 states. Only Air Force and CSU being in the same state. Their states are all contiguous at least. The geography is going to kill the WAC the way things are. Every conference game in every sport is a flight. The are no quick road trips like SJSU and Fresno.

It would be nice if the commissioners of all the non-AQ conferences got together and hammered out some conference alignments that made geographic sense. They could negotiate a tv deal as a block and share everything. They could also plan ahead so that FCS teams that want to jump up know where they will be.

  40. Garret October 28, 2010 7:29 am

    Shoko,

Yes, Nevada/Fresno get their full WAC checks for 2010-2011 and lose their WAC checks for 2011-2012–all schools leaving the conference give up their final year of revenue. UH will give up its last year of WAC revenue if/when it leaves the WAC. Some things that the article doesn’t mention:

    1. The TV deal is expected to decrease for 2011-2012 because BSU will be gone. That significantly reduces the conference payout.

    2. The $1.4 million included the money BSU earned from going to a BCS bowl. BSU might go to a BCS bowl this season also, earning the WAC $3 million (Fresno State and Nevada will get $375k each). However, BSU won’t making any BCS money for the WAC in 2011-2012.

    3. The BCS gives $9.5 million every year for the non-AQ conferences to split, and they split the money by ranking the nonconference records of each conference and giving more to the conferences that win more. The MWC gets the bigger share, WAC is #2, and C-USA is #3. Without BSU, and with so many schools at the bottom of the WAC taking bodybag games, the WAC could fall because C-USA…which would cost the WAC a lot of money.

    4. The WAC hasn’t had any school make a nice run in the NCAA basketball tournament for a long time, which is why the payment to the WAC in 2008-2009 (the last year reported) was less than 2007-2008 and WAY less than 2004-2005. Both WAC schools lost in the first round last year so the payment will probably drop again.

  41. tommui October 28, 2010 7:31 am

    Good morning Hawaii!

Far be it from me to criticize Benson and the attorneys for the WAC but …

  42. Garret October 28, 2010 7:35 am

Fresno State AD Thomas Boeh said Fresno State will not have to pay the entrance fee to the Mountain West, saving the Bulldogs about $1 million.

    http://fresnobeehive.com/sportsbuzz/2010/08/more_conference_realignmentcam.html#ixzz13g0m3YaR

  43. Garret October 28, 2010 7:38 am

Could have sworn that the forfeit of the entry fee will go against future revenue payouts in the future once they join.

Some articles said that Fresno/Nevada/Boise “might” have slightly reduced MWC revenue payments in lieu of the entry fee, but that appears to not be happening. Craig Thompson said that Fresno/Nevada will be treated exactly the same as BSU…and they really need BSU’s BCS points so Fresno/Nevada benefit.

  44. Don Weir October 28, 2010 7:41 am

    A Story

JJ Jefferson came to the San Diego Chargers out of ASU in 1978. He signed a three year contract and had 2 breakout seasons (over 1000 yds each year). After his second year JJ demanded to renegotiate his contract with the Chargers; this was during the time that the Chargers were owned by Gene Klein (distributor for Volvo in North America). JJ took his case to Gene who discussed signing a three year contract and how in the third year, discussions should start about adequate compensation for a receiver who made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season and the subsequent season. JJ was adamant that the contract be renegotiated at one of the meetings. Gene reiterated the business side of life, signing untested rookies, signing contracts, and running a business but JJ started to talk about a holdout. One week later JJ was traded to Green Bay and his career took a sudden downward spiral.

    Years Later

Did the departing WAC teams sign a contract? Oh how sweet $900,000 is as compared to $5,000,000. Doesn’t this mean that, hypothetically, the WAC left $8,2000.000 on the table as the schools walked away? What kind of ‘business’ agreement is this?

Lawyers fees? The WAC doesn’t have a lawyer on retainer?

Who is afraid that the WAC didn’t have avalid iron clad contract? On whose shoulders does this fall?

At some point in this conference realignment someone in college football is going to take a stand or we are simply going to have a two tier Division 1, the ‘haves’ and the have nots’.

  46. Shoko October 28, 2010 7:43 am

    Garret,

I agree with everything you mentioned. And agree especially about the WAC Basketball teams last year (USU and NMSU) going one-and-done. In a playoff system, its all based on units and sadly, the WAC is just not producing like it did when Nevada went to the Sweet 16.

Anyway, I could have sworn I heard Thompson say that the entry fee isn’t really forgiven, but goes against future revenue. I could be wrong, and as MW mentioned, I may be getting it mixed with the Utah-Colorado agreement with the PAC-10.

    Hello Don Weirs!

Re: #44 – a retainer (as dentist will tell you) is to hold things in place.

A retainer for lawyers is the same thing – holding the attorney in place until he/she is needed. Then if the attorney is needed, he/she being at your beck and call, you get charged for the time spent.

I don’t know what Benson had in mind when all those proceedings during the “solidarity” meetings, but he obviously did not have a lawyer with him – either that or he should think about malpractice.

Never burn your bridges. I really hope at some point that Hawaii moves into the MWC. Yeah Nevada hates playing football here, and Fresno State is beginning to hate playing us at their house, but what the heck, a MWC invitation would be great.

Can someone tell me how Karl Benson still has a job? I can understand that he does not control the actions of individual institutions, but the whole fiasco about not having member schools sign the buyout agreement what is up with that?

I know people think the $900k seems like a little, but like I said in the last post they are the ones getting screwed. Not sure what was in the loyalty pledge, but if it said you couldn’t leave until the new year or something like that then they could just say that they are declaring right now (before July 1, 2011) that they are leaving for the MWC for 2012. They wouldn’t have to pay any exit fees or loyalty fees because they just have to declare before July 1st that they are exiting for next year (just like Boise). Just like if the MWC was to ask Hawaii to come over, then we would be declaring now that we are leaving for the MWC in 2012 with no exit fees.

Not to mention that if Garret’s figures are right, then the MWC makes way more TV money. Nevada, FSU, and BSU will probably make more than $1 million in TV shares alone compared to the WAC. Especially now that BSU left, the WAC TV money will be puny. Let’s just hope that ESPN wants a TV contract with the WAC in 2012. Would you be paying millions for UH, Idaho, NMSU, LaTech, USU, SJSU, North Texas, Montana, etc. Montana might be the ones bringing in the money since they win a lot in football.

If the MWC was smart, they would go with two divisions just so they have a chance at two teams in the top 10 and get two teams in a BCS bowl. Then once they become a BCS qualifier, then have a playoff between the two teams. That would probably make a lot of money.

The people who complain about travel to Hawaii are usually only the Mid-Majors. D-IAA teams love coming here for the experience and paycheck they get. BCS schools don’t use travel costs as an excuse to come here, they have the money. If anything, they might use travel *time* as an excuse if they need to get out of coming here.

don’t believe that the MWC will ever extend an invitation to hawaii if TCU leaves, which is inevitible. The main reasons are travel costs and travel time for all sports, not only football. Those are some of the reasons why nevada and fresno left the wac. Unless uh is willing to provide travel subsidies for all sports and maybe a little premium, teams will always be reluctant to play in a conference with hawaii. Hence, the best bet is for hawaii to go independent in football, and try to find a good conference for its other sports. Staying in the new wac is not the answer, the newer div ii teams just do not have the money to fund the travel costs to hawaii in all sports.

“What it means for Boise State

The Broncos now need to fill two vacancies on their 2011 football schedule. The Mountain West will be an 8-member league for football in 2011 and the Broncos have just three nonconference games scheduled — at Ole Miss, at Toledo and home against Tulsa.”

  95. Garret October 28, 2010 10:17 am

This is how the WAC distributed last year’s money:

    Boise State $3,727,629

    Fresno State $1,413,296

    Nevada $1,413,296

    Idaho $1,333,296

    Utah State $1,138,296

    Louisiana Tech $1,125,796

    New Mexico State $1,075,796

    San Jose State $1,025,796

    Hawaii $950,796

    TOTAL: $13,203,996

For comparison purposes, the MWC distributed $26.5 million to its schools, slightly more than *double* what the WAC gave out. The average payment a MWC school got was $2.9 million…and UH got less than $1 million from the WAC.

Stay where we are. The WAC is fine as it is. Donovan has contingent plans in hand to move on as an independent or into another league if the WAC should ever implode on it’s own.

But honestly, don’t panic or freak out. Don’t buy into the short sighted notion of fictitious respect, league strength or TV contracts. They’re all based on an extremely flawed BS system that’s making everyone dumbass crazy.

This is EXACTLY what the BCS cronies want you to think. Rumors, misinformation, confusion, doubt, distrust, infighting all work into their favor.

Once the new 16 team playoff format gets installed all this nonsense is not going to matter. We’ll make more than enough money to cover all of our past, current and future sports expenses.

Not sure if Jake is on the blog, but this is kind of interesting. It’s from the ESPN chat.

    Jake (Honolulu, HI)

Thoughts on the exit plan for Fresno St. and Nevada from the WAC? Is this the deal breaker for MWC to become a BCS conference?

    Andrea Adelson (4:28 PM)

I think it really hurts the MWC, as I wrote in a blog post earlier this year. This is kind of like the trump card the WAC delivers for the MWC raiding them and ruining their BYU plans. But essentially, those two teams staying in the WAC thru 2011-12 means nothing they do in this four-year evaluation cycle would count toward the MWC’s attempt at becoming AQ. With the loss of BYU, that hurts.

    Exit/Entrance fee(s) to the WAC:

Seems an “iron clad” $5 million buy-out clause is like a ballon filled with water only for it to spring any pukas and only a dribbling ends up as true payment to the WAC.

Wonder how it would be: assuming that Benson is still around, the MWC is in dire straits, WAC it moving on up, and BSU/Nevada/Fresno seeking re-entry into the WAC?

What will the WAC charge for entry fee and how solid would it be for “full price”?

Like Tom Mui mentioned, either Benson is a dummy or the WAC needs to file an E&O against the attorney who was at the meeting and/or creted the ‘buy-out/exit fee” document.

All this was was an exercise of blowing wind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No doubt the loyalty clause required a consensus during the drafting of it from all the member schools. Easy to see how one or more schools would make sure that they had an exit strategy if they needed it.

Also the whole thing became a great bargaining chip if a school was so inclined — give the MWC a little heads up on what is going down and force their hand — they need to raid the WAC to make sure the WAC is no longer desirable to BYU (if it ever really was) and if you are the MWC taking Utah State and Nevada makes the most sense. Utah State for basketball and geography and Nevada for geography, football, and rivalry with UNLV. Fresno doesn’t make much sense but it does give SDSU an in-state rival, they have a solid football program, and, more importantly, it really hurts the WAC.

nice job of the WAC spreading the payment out for 5 years to ensure that any team that leaves (possibly Hawaii) won’t get money if they bolt.

Also, I don’t see how people still consider this a compromise. Those schools were already bound to play in the WAC through 2012 because they missed the deadline. Its not like they are saying “hey, if you agree to lower our exit fee, we’ll do you the favor and play next season.” THEY WOULD HAVE HAD TO REGARDLESS! The reduction of the fee is a bonus for them.

I think I may have said this before, but it would be like a student telling the teacher “I’ll turn in my homework for extra credit.” The homework is required but the kid gets extra credit points anyway?

WTF. But you know what, whatever already. MOVE ON and BEAT IT. Enjoy the beatings we put on you this year, and next year for that matter, and enjoy your run at the bottom of the MWC standings in the future.

UH would have had public hearings and committee meetings and feasibility studies and more hearings and more committees and, after a while, the MWC would say: “Uh, you got Utah State’s number?”)

    😆 😆 😆

Nathan Enderle had three interceptions in two games before rebounding with a strong showing against New Mexico State. He threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns despite having fantastic passing stats, protection for Enderle has been a problem. The offensive line has surrendered 27 sacks in seven games which ranks 118th in the nation.

  141. RE: Softball double-header on Nov 6th.

Not to sound cold or anything, but as Pomai already surmised yesterday, there was no way that 12pm start time was going to change and I don’t think it should so thankfully it’s staying the same.

Granted, the BSU game is going to be big and whatnot, but the softball program already made accomodations for the other sports as it is, especially with moving their alumnae game to 5pm from 6pm.

    Enough was enough.

  142. Markazulu October 28, 2010 11:48 am

And Apparently a Utah State fan is disgruntled.

“Let’s get a campaign going to FIRE Coach Anderson! He beat BYU and acts like he won the Super Bowl, and then he can’t coach against loser teams the following weeks… pathetic!”

Isnt it great to have fans like this!

Warrior football inspires state By Duane Shimogawa

The Warrior football team’s remarkable five-game winning streak is all the buzz across the state.

Some even liken it to that magical Sugar Bowl season of three years ago.

From boosting merchandise sales to increasing the state’s morale, Hawaii football is capturing the imaginations of many during this amazing run.

Shades of 2007 are beginning to show up during this year’s edition of the Warriors.

“I’ve never seen a win streak like this not since the Sugar Bowl run back in 2007 and I was in the UH marching band at the time and those games, every game was pretty much go to and from what I feel this year, every game thus far, you have to be there,” UH student Glen Molina said.

Alewa Heights resident Scott Sugai is a longtime fan and watches almost every game.

“I think it’s pretty exciting for us to have been following them, who’ve seen the good times, June Jones and a little lower times to McMackin, but I think the people gave this new team some time, some time for McMackin to build his team and now we’re seeing the rewards,” he said.

Ewa Beach resident Gino Patagi is a season ticket holder, but he was still buying a ticket for his sister.

“She hears about the football team all the time on the news and she wanted to come check it out live,” he said.

But it’s not just his sister feelin’ the team’s buzz.

“I’ve been getting a lot of questions from my co-workers because they know I’m a season ticket holder, so they’ve been asking about getting tickets to the game or just asking about the team in general, so seems like there’s a lot of buzz out there,” Patagi said.

At the downtown Rainbowtique, sales have doubled since the streak. Everything from the foam shakas to Hello Kitty gear have been hot sellers.

“The momentum is on there right now, so they should keep it up, turn this positive drive into good things,” UH student Chris Fajardo said.

Early estimates of ticket sales for the Idaho game aren’t out yet, but UH officials say it could rival the season opener’s numbers, especially since it’s homecoming.

“We could even look forward to next year, maybe we’ll make it to another Sugar Bowl or another BCS game, who knows,”

  147. “Loser teams”?

Did Utah State just drop another game to NMSU?

  148. OldDiver October 28, 2010 11:54 am

This is as focused a Warrior team I have ever seen. Kinda like last years softball team, you don’t hope they are going to show up, you know they are going to show up. The Warriors aren’t going to lose focus on Saturday.

    Hank,

Biggest threat Idaho will present is the deep ball.

We havent done well historically againsta good play action passing QB. Too often our DBs give about 10yards or cuahion on WRs.

I got no gripes on the way recruiting has been for our football team since Mack took over. This WAC instability made things look shaky for a spell… but we should be good to go for this season… this year’s team looks great.. next year’s team looks to be as good, too.

Nestled along the sleepy south shore on Kauai is the Botanical Garden formely known as the Allerton Estate of Lawai Beach.

Built into the cliffs going up into the valley are hundreds of tiny caves that were burial place for many Hawaiians and on certain nights they return as “night marchers”.

One night my Dad, older brother and I were dunking when we looked up the valley and saw many lights emerging along the cliffs and moving down the valley toward the ocean. Soon, you could hear the drums! We stayed put hoping the moi or oio or papio would bite, but it was not to be. After a while, our Dad said, “no matter what, keep your eyes closed, lower your head until they pass.”

Interestingly, we could feel the air start to bristle, hear the foot steps, drums loudly beating, and felt them pass us as we sat on the sand. All the hairs on my head “stood up”, chicken skin moment.

After they passed and appeared to enter the sea, we pulled up our lines and went home.

After thought to Pride’s post on night marchers.

  163. Stephen Tsai October 28, 2010 12:55 pm

It is every school’s right to change conferences.

If you think another conference makes more fiscal or geographical sense, then, by all means, please go.

But there are exit procedures that are somewhat reasonable. If you’re Fresno State, a WAC member for nearly two decades, why not take the time to do the right thing in leaving? If you’re going to break up with someone, sit down and explain the reasons and leave honorably. But all of this sneaking around and making promises that can’t be kept, well, that just does not seem honorable.

  164. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 1:06 pm

I just hope that our team continues to be totally focused on Idaho this weekend, with all that’s been going on over the past couple of days.

We need to take care of business on the field, while our Administrators take care of the other stuff.

We need for everything to come together for our future. We’ve got great coaches doing a super job this year. I hope that equates to more kids getting drafted because of their learned skills. This should hopefully lead to continued great recruits.

Just gotta keep it all going forward!

    Statement game for us!

    Go, Warriors!!!

    #162… A-House… that’s some spooky stuff!

We used to go fishing out along Kaena Point a few times every year when I was growing up. Away from everything and everyone. It used to get kinda spooky at times too.

  166. OldDiver October 28, 2010 1:15 pm

I always believed the WAC would get support from the BCS conferences if Fresno State and Nevada decided to bolt early and took the WAC to court. It’s not in their best interest if member schools could leave anytime they want with no regard to signed agreements. The only issue is the five million dollar penalty for breaking the agreement.

  167. A-House October 28, 2010 1:26 pm

Oh, Mr Benson, can I have a $900,000 loan with an installment plan of 5 years without interest?

This is what the WAC gave to Nevada and Fresno!

Seems that Nevada is burning more bridges than Fresno – sounds correct?

  168. Garret October 28, 2010 1:29 pm

Fresno seems happy with the financial aspects of the deal. Their revenue from the MWC will be slightly more than *double* what they get from the WAC now, so they will be making $1.5 million to $2 million extra from the conference and will be giving $180k of that to the WAC for a few years.

“We’re comfortable with managing $180,000 a year through our operating budget. We’ll receive additional revenues from the Mountain West in 2012-13 and expect it to be a little bit double than what we get from the WAC.”

Who is Steven as a middle blocker for the men’s VB team? Did this commitment appear in the papers? or is Coach Wade feeding you “confidential” info?

I see where Coach Gib has REALLY scored big on his latest commitment. That makes 2 good recruits for 2011-12 class.

Coach Shoiji is also doing well in recruiting for 2011-12.

OK, Coach Dana, strut your stuff! Secure a commitment from one of the best high school players in the country!!!!!

Liz, Here’s A Cheer and song you may remember…

    LITTLE BLUE MAN

    Betty Johnson

One morning when I was out shopping

Though you’ll find it hard to believe

A little blue man came out of the crowd

And timidly tugged at my sleeve.

“I wuv you! I wuv you!” said the little blue man

“I wuv you! I wuv you to bits.”

“I wuv you!” He loved me said the little blue man

And scared me right out of my wits.

I hurried back to my apartment

I rushed in and I closed the door

But there on the desk stood the little blue man

Who started to tell me once more

“I wuv you! I wuv you!” said the little blue man

“I wuv you! I wuv you to bits.”

“I wuv you!” He loved me said the little blue man

And scared me right out of my wits.

For weeks after that I was haunted

Though no one could seehim but me

Right by my side was the little blue man

    Wherever I happened to be.

    One evening in wild desperation

I rushed to a rooftop in town

And over the side pushed the little blue man

Who sang to me all the way down

“I wuv you! I wuv you!” said the little blue man

“I wuv you! I wuv you to bits.”

“I wuv you!” He loved me said the little blue man

And scared me right out of my wits.

I whispered, “Thank goodness that’s over!”

I smiled as I hurried outside

But there on the street stood the little blue man

Who said with a tear in his eye

    “I don’t wuv you anymore!”

K’den seeing how we’re talking about Huaka’i Po, I had a friend who lived across from Ohikilolo Beach park, he swore that on the full moon they would hear them coming from the makua side of the house where the back door was, they would open the back door and the front door which where aligined and the Huaka’i Po would march right through thier house. Now that would make me think twice.

  172. A-House October 28, 2010 1:37 pm

Is there a clause within the new “exit” contract that allows Nevada and/or Fresno to reduce part of the $900,000 IF they do an “early pay-off”? Much like a mortgage where any remaining interest is wiped clean.

I noticed in one of Garret’s posts where the wording of the exit contract says that when all schools sign the agreement, it will seal off any civil action against one or both schools. What happens if one of the schools decide to sue first and not sign the agreement? Does this action null and void the exit agreement? Much like what Nevada and Fresno did by reiterating their pledge to stay in the WAC and a few days later have simultaneous new conferences announcing their move to the MWC.

  173. A-House October 28, 2010 1:42 pm

Does the MWC have an BCS “insider” who keeps remindng the MWC Commish that when they meet all of the AQ qualifications that the MWC will “automatically” be invited to join the BCS?

Seems their only goal is to make it to the BCS scene.

If somebody owed me that much money, I would take immediate action to collect on it. It may not look very congenial, and it damn sure wouldn’t look pretty…but there would be no further action required once I made my point.

  177. madeinhawaii October 28, 2010 2:00 pm

    Hank,

I agree… Tuioti did an excellent job, hopefully some of the other coaches took notes. Tuioti, however, in doing such an outstanding job, earned his right to get back on the field as a coach.

Indonesia not only had another tsunami and earthquake,

but also suffered from a Volcanoe eruption.

A warning system installed after a deadly ocean wave in 2004 had broken from a lack of maintenance.

Hundreds were still missing after Monday’s 3-meter wave spawned by a massive quake struck the remote Mentawi islands off western Sumatra. At least 311 people died as the tsunami washed away hundreds of wooden and bamboo homes in 20 villages, displacing more than 20,000 people, said Ade Edward, a government disaster official.

Among the dead was a revered elder who had refused to leave his ceremonial post as caretaker of the mountain’s spirits.

The discovery Wednesday of his ash-covered body, reportedly found in a position of Islamic prayer, kneeling face-down on the floor, rattled residents who for years joined his ceremonies to appease the rumbling giant by throwing rice, clothes and chickens into the crater

  179. gigi-hawaii October 28, 2010 2:07 pm

  180. Not an Expert October 28, 2010 2:08 pm

The college football heiarchy has created a farm system in conferences. When the strongest non AQ conference starts to approach the front gates of the promised BCS grounds, the BCS will elevate a team or two inorder to keep the rest of them looking in.

Next to be gone will be TCU. Will more than likely happen if another school get to the level of TCU and BSU in the MWC or repositioning of schools already in BCS conferences. If Utah, BYU, TCU and BSU were all in the same conference guarans ball barins they would have qualified as a BCS conference.

If C-USA starts to get 3 teams to be ranked nationally, it will happen that one will be given a ticket in a BCS conference. The domino affect to continue to take place as each school wants to get elevated in order to get more money and the possible membership to a BCS conference.

Can’t help believe that the commissioner of the non BCS conferences are not puppets of the BCS heiarchy.

The WAC is going to give both Fresno State and Nevada about $1.6 million each (that will go down to $1.2 million if BSU doesn’t play in a BCS bowl) next summer as their share of conference revenue. So, they will take the $1.6 million and give the WAC $180k back. The WAC could have easily have taken all $900k out of the money they will give each school next summer.

However, it is possible that *Karl Benson* wanted the payment plan. This gives teams an incentive to stay in the conference. If Fresno/Nevada paid all the money at once, UH could get its share and go indy. However, with the payment plan, any school (La Tech?) leaving the WAC would have to give up their share of the money.

I would hope that the D-IAA schools that the WAC adds don’t get any of the Fresno/Nevada money.

    d1shima,

You are talking about the guy who said that Fresno State and Nevada could not accept an invitation to the MWC even if they eventually got an invitation because they couldn’t afford to pay $5 million. Benson gloated in his e-mail with Utah State that his agreement would force Fresno State and Nevada to turn down the MWC. Instead, they pay just $180k per year for 5 years and get a $1 million fee waived.

  220. 808ike October 28, 2010 3:58 pm

  221. Maybe if the original penalty was $100,000,000.00, then MAYBE we’d get at least $900,000.00 a year for 5 years.

#168…I think Welty and the fresno administration is FULL OF IT…without BYU, Utah, and possibly TCU, how can they know how much ESPN will be willing to give the MWC in 2012-13???…

Shame on them for that kind of speculation to cover up their PILAU method of doing business.

    Hank,

It is *not* speculation. The MWC gives $1.5 million to $2 million more to its schools than the WAC does. Their TV contract pays 3x the WAC’s TV contract. Their NCAA basketball money is staying with their conference and brings them a lot of money.

The MWC gets a better nonconference record than any non-AQ conference (mainly because their bottom teams don’t play as many bodybag games and their bottom teams normally beat the WAC’s bottom teams), which means that they get the biggest share of the $9.8 million that the non-AQ conferences split.

Look at my post from early today. The WAC gave UH $950k last year and the average payment to MWC teams was about $2 million more than that. The MWC gets more basketball money every year (4 NCAA teams in the tournament last year and some of them won games) and the WAC has been getting less.

It is not speculation. The money is easy to follow. BYU is leaving all of their NCAA basketball credits behind, and SDSU, New Mexico, and UNLV are still good basketball programs.

  223. The first thing I posted on the morning of August 18, 2010 was that the $5,000,000.00 was TOO LOW.

I was right, but I didn’t know the bylaws would contradict the WAC Code Book.

Could have been $20,000,000.00 and still… NADA.

  240. Michigan Warrior October 28, 2010 4:46 pm

#219… Garret… That is terrible! Especially given Benson’s communication to at least one other WAC member concerning the penalty fee.

Just makes my stomach turn. Can’t imagine that the WAC presidents feel really good about this whole settlement, even if they agreed to it. Must be something totally stupid in that loyalty agreement that forced their hand to accept such a ridiculous settlement.

Even if Reno’s President didn’t sign that agreement, there should have been something in place that allowed Reno’s rep to handle it. Or, the WAC should have immediately faxed it to Reno to get it signed and faxed right back, or something. I find it absolutely stupid that something like this could have thrown the whole thing out the window.

Wonder what the exact wording was in regards to BYU, and how it might affect present WAC members at the time, to prevent them from even thinking of leaving for the MWC.

    Man…

    Benson:

    2 Face

    Speak with fork tongue.

Speaks from 2 sides of his mouth.

Has too many senior moments for his age.

The worst negotiator one can imagine.

    Lack of vision and goals.

Now to save money or make money for the conference.

Get Benson out as commissioner of the WAC.

If he is maintained don’t allow him to come to Hawaii. (Unnecessary expense)

Have the commissioner’s office at a member school.

Don’t allow him to be the negotiator.

Have taped teleconference meetings. Evidence on tape for his ineptness which will protect the WAC.

His meetings behind closed doors leads to shambles and we don’t know what really went down or what may have been omitted.

Why does he not resign, he must feel he is a legend in his own mind. As some stated he is only following the orders of the presidents of each school. If that is so get a rubber stamp and the WAC will save a lot of money.

  250. So apparently people report that Karl Benson is claiming that in the new WAC (sans BSU, FSU, and UNR) UH will be the “backbone” of the conference and will reap the benefits of whatever ESPN contract he is able to salvage…

Sounds good on paper as a UH fan right???? BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Benson really is an IDIOT!

In trying to be objective and ignoring my bias as a Hawaii fan, to me this is a mistake to make proclaimations on public radio that ONE program is going to be the supposed “focus” of the conference.

As a Hawaii fan I should somehow pound my chest in “pride”, but then taking a step back and looking at it I’d be further concerned.

If I were USU, NMSU, Idaho, SJSU, and LaTech, I’d be looking at these comments as if to say, “hey! HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Benson is losing it. He’s clearly trying to butter up the Hawaii listeners in to a sense of confidence that we (Hawaii) have a lot to look forward to by staying in the WAC with the new additions.

Again, NOT smart or even respectful of the other WAC members to do such a thing.

Personally I wouldn’t want to further irritate Utah State and LaTech as I look at these two schools that could be next in line to receive invites elsewhere.

I’d rather end up being the “backbone” of the WAC by our actions on the field of competition and earning that right by what we do. To have his idiot of a commissioner already proclaim publically that UH is “IT” in a conference that barely has any legs to stand on just FURTHER insults the other schools (including the potential invites) thus creating more divides in a fragile conference.

This guy has NO clue about “damage control”!!!

I think many are under the impression the WAC commissioner is like an NFL or NBA commissioner. Not so. He merely follows the orders of the WAC CEOs (presidents or chancellors).

    ST,

If that’s the case, then why does he need a staff of 18 to follow the order of others? That’s kind of like when UH only had one president, but then when he left the new guy needed to hire two more associates to help him. Oh, wait…

  253. Not an Expert October 28, 2010 6:17 pm

A negative image painted on why would teams want to come and play in Hawaii needs to be corrected. It did not help having coaches like Ault with his negative perspective. Reason why he always lost here in Hawaii. (Bachi) How does that help recruits wanting to come to Hawaii with a member WAC school only to find out that it will be an in an out proposition. Good only for hamburgers.

A coach should use Hawaii as an advantage. “Come play at our school and you get to go to paradise twice in the next 4 years. We’ll stay there a day or two extra so you’ll be able to tour the island and its culture. Now the coach and the athletic director need to be akamai and have a bye week after coming to Hawaii. This is where an akamai commissioner can help schedule the member schools accordingly to have their bye after coming to Hawaii. Creative planning, finances and support from the top can help to make this a reality that I believe can enhance recruiting for all teams.

I am ready for a new WAC commissioner; one who has the leadership qualities to plan, organize, direct, supervise, and accept/analyze feed back to determine what action(s), if any, are needed to successfully complete the mission.

Every plan is never perfect and requires constant review, analysis, develop and select new courses of action, and proceed with the best option with the support of all conference members. A plan that is developed in advance, presented to each member for their comments, and “carressed” until all members are in complete agreement with and willing to sign a document of total support.

With all due respect to Garret, I find it hard to swallow that the 6 school reps developed and agreed to what has been reported as the “final” exit penalties and Benson was their “mouth piece”. What penalties? Nevada and Fresno cleaned the WAC like thieves. Where do you get a $900,000 loan with 5 installment payments and no interest!!! Are the UH students, fans, alumnae, and Hawaii residents entitled to know what went down? After all, we are the ones who pay all the bills for UH.

The remaining WAC schools were punished!!!!!!!!!

I would be very happy to be the WAC’s mouth piece for the money Benson is being paid. No need think. No need to be aggressive and develop plans to keep the conference moving forward. Just be a parrot for the conference members.

BTW, how much is he paid annually? Any conference in need of a good mouth piece?

Hey Mr. Benson, take your “Hawaii will be the back bone of the new WAC” and shove it up your a$$! Personal opinion!

    http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=439196

  266. Garret October 28, 2010 6:50 pm

    Some Benson highlights:

    1. Admits that the WAC Code of Conduct says that the deadline for notifying the WAC about leaving is September 1 (which Fresno/Nevada adhered to), but says that the Bylaws’ deadline should take precedence. The Code was updated *earlier this year* and approved by Benson without correcting that crucial date!

    2. When asked why Nevada didn’t sign the agreement, Benson said that a “clerical error” caused the WAC to *forget* to get Nevada to sign it. The WAC had more than enough time to get Nevada to sign the agreement–sure they missed the meeting, but there was a *long* time after that before they sniffed an invitation from the MWC and FAX machines, printers, and scanners that take care of immediately acquiring signatures in the business world all the time. Remember, Benson didn’t say that the WAC didn’t need the signature, he said that the WAC messed up. Later on when the WAC sued Nevada and Fresno, Benson said that the contract was binding even without the signature…but I’m sure the mediator was shown Benson’s public statements about the “clerical error.”

    3. When Benson was asked to comment on BSU moving to the MWC, he said that it was “great” for BSU to be “rewarded for their success.” Benson succeeded in cementing the public perception that the WAC was inferior…their own Commissioner said so! Benson sounded like a BSU fan excited about them moving to the MWC…instead of defending their conference and putting the best PR spin he could do.

I could go on with examples that have NOTHING to do with WAC Presidents and are only due to Benson’s failures. These are simply examples of how Benson is an inferior Commissioner.

The only thing I *do* blame the WAC Presidents about is that they appear to love having Benson as commissioner and in decades there has not been a single report of a WAC President wanting to get rid of him. If the WAC Presidents want someone like Benson leading him, the WAC will continue on this path.

    A-House,

I take it from your comment that you think I disagree with you. I do not. And I think you’d be a MUCH better commissioner than Benson. Someone with military leadership experience could at least pay attention to detail and avoid mistakes…something Benson has not been able to do.

I didn’t realize that “whatever his title is” Carl Benson has run the WAC for like 20+ years…..We demand new blood out of our elected officials, CEO’s of failing companies, school boards etc…umm why the hell not ask for the same thing in this instance.

How about we give him the $900,000 to go follow Peterson to the MWC and go make trouble for them.

Hey the WAC isn’t some charitable organization that these schools can just use and abuse…

  278. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 28, 2010 7:16 pm

If the WAC is impotent against any kind of raiding of teams, of negotiating its own future, of ensuring the lifeline and membership will continue into the future….why should Hawaii stay?

are we just delaying the inevitable…i mean arent there only so many teams that either could or would go to Div 1? It’s not like you have 10 teams every 10 years that can make that climb. so if the next group of teams come in and decide they wanna move, then what?

If we stay in the WAC, we better have a plan in place that we can get into should we be forced to go independent because that is what I see will ultimately happen.

  279. Ipu Man October 28, 2010 7:24 pm

If Benson did not do what he did, would not

    the non-football WAC teams’ upcoming

schedules be a mess and thus the end of the

WAC for them (whereas most football teams

    would survive during the mess…)

So CB “saved” the non-football WAC teams?

  280. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 28, 2010 7:28 pm

    ipu man,

    yes benson is lord king.

  281. expat October 28, 2010 7:37 pm

Again, the reports from various news outlets indicated that the loyalty pledge was contingent on BYU joining the WAC (excluding football) and that if BYU failed to do so the agreement was void. It also apparently included a clause that made it void if any school left.

If that is true, and I have not heard anyone say that it isn’t, it is amazing that the WAC got any money out of Nevada and Fresno. The only bargaining chip seems to be that they missed the deadline and should have to stay another year. Despite the clerical errors it seems that they did not really dispute that point. And that is where their liability was — if they left despite missing deadlines the remaining members would have real scheduling problems and would potentially lose millions of dollars.

The real issue is that the loyalty resolution was poorly written, but as I wrote earlier, that may have been the point as it had to be a consensus document by its very nature. Benson may not have had any control over that. And when you get right down to it one of the member schools or someone at BYU are most likely responsible for the MWC getting wind of the situation.

Write a toothless resolution… leak the situation… take advantage

As Garret has said, there is more money available in the MWC.

Best cure for all of this mess is to keep winning.

  282. βρεω808 October 28, 2010 7:43 pm

There appears to be 12 people listed w/ management titles on the WAC staff – including KB. If the top dog is making $380k (in 2007), just how much kala is being blown on this sham called the WAC?!! This doesn’t count the “Supervisors of Officials”. 😈 🙄 😐

  285. Slugger October 28, 2010 7:47 pm

    brew808,

I just thought of this…I’ll be playing in the Bay Area the 2nd week of Nov. till mid-week the following wk. I have my priorities…I’m getting home for the SJSU game. Think we can pull together a Cattle Call?

  286. Ipu Man October 28, 2010 7:48 pm

Who nowadays would want that job?

  287. expat October 28, 2010 7:50 pm

Don’t think that I am defending Benson. He doesn’t seem to be doing a very good job, but he has had some moments. If he had been able to swing the whole BYU thing that would have been a pretty big coup. He was kind of ahead of his time with the old WAC super-conference thing even if it fell apart in the end.

  288. cocobean October 28, 2010 7:50 pm

The best thing about the settlement is it buys UH some time to weigh it’s options. Donovan surely must be checking who is available and willing to play here in mid Oct through the first week of Dec. There’s only five Indys, the MWC, the Big East and the Big 12 less two, who might be available during that period. We need 7-9 home games and between 4-6 road games to fill our schedule. Donovan has a Bunyanesque task to complete a 13 game schedule as an Indy. Even if we were willing play on the road, teams might not want to play us when they’re in the middle or towards the end of their conference schedule. Plus the better the team gets the least likely BSC schools would want to play us here or at their place.

For now, I think UH should sit tight. See if Montana or the two Texas teams join. As D1 schools they’ll definitely be more competitive with the 20 additional scholarships. Remember BSU and South Florida were DII not too long ago.

  289. Ipu Man October 28, 2010 7:51 pm

  292. A-House October 28, 2010 8:31 pm

    Cocobean:

It was reported that Montana already turne down any move to D-1 status; much too expensive for their budget.

  293. OldDiver October 28, 2010 9:00 pm

Doesn’t Karl Benson serve at the pleasure of the college presidents? If so shouldn’t we be questioning the decisions of those presidents? If the bag boy continues to break crack the eggs the responsibility belongs to the owner of the grocery store. Sounds like Karl Benson is taking the entire hit for everything that has happened.

  294. madeinhawaii October 28, 2010 9:02 pm

  298. Not an Expert October 28, 2010 9:22 pm

If UH stays in the WAC, traveling for the football team to the mainland can be coordinated by having road games in back to back weeks. Texas State and University of Texas at San Antonio are less than a 100 miles apart with enrollment of 30,000 plus. Idaho and Montana are about 200 miles apart at the most and the back to back can be implemented. Save money and get the team acclimated for the 2nd game hopefully.

UH should bargain with the WAC and have them stay at 8 to 9 teams maximum for football. Thus UH can play 5 to 6 non conference games and maybe able to garner more revenue. UH to keep the non conference revenues separate from the WAC. Look at the 2011 schedule UH has 6 non conference games. In so doing it will be a lot easier for UH to schedule 5 to 6 non conference games a year and still be able to participate in a league championship.

All non football teams to be a member of the Big West. Allow for an agreement to extend 10 years minimum with the options at the control of UH. If UH were to change anything they would need to give at least an year notice to the conference affected by their departure.

It does appear Hawaii may have some bargaining power due to what’s happening.

  299. LizKauai (iPad) October 28, 2010 9:22 pm

So, I’m green and ready to rock and roll this weekend.

Did someone say Benson is making 374K yearly? Wow. Would love to see his yearly expense account. With all his travel and “PR work” his expenses must be pretty hefty. Hope his bossses are keeping a close eye on anything he charges to the WAC, something like a yearly audit.

Hope none of his family or friends, his staff and their families are getting any benefits like all expense paid travel or free game tickets. Remember when UH tried to slip in non qualified people for their Sugar Bowl trip. I wonder how many people traveled on the Wac’s office dime to the Sugar Bowl and Boise’s two Fiesta Bowl.

  305. Lopaka43 October 28, 2010 10:17 pm

    Aloha Tsaiko Ohana!!

I don’t know about you, but I am pretty tired of the endless speculating, back seat driving, and general bitching about negotiations with Fresno and Nevada. Especially since most of the guys making the comments never ever operated in that environment, don’t know anything about what is going on in the negotiations, and don’t know what the presidents and athletic directors are telling Benson.

I don’t have any personal experience with Benson, except the few interviews I have heard, but I think he has had a difficult job holding this conference together. I don’t feel like defending him for how this last negotiation turned out, but I don’t think he had a great hand to play, and I think he probably got what most of the remaining WAC members wanted, which was to know that they would have a full conference schedule for next year and would not have to scramble to fill next year’s schedule.

Seems to me the money is more symbolic than anything. It was supposed to be a penalty for breaking up the WAC, and it didn’t work because the Fresno and Nevada guys could do the math just like Garrett. With the easier travel, better rivalries, and greater TV money, the MWC membership was just too inviting. And in most cases, settling out of court with a guaranteed payment to the schools instead of giving money to the lawyers for time preparing the case and being in court is worth a big discount.

And I get really irked when people on this blog start laying into Jim Donovan because he hasn’t announced to the world (or to them) what he is trying to do, who he is talking to, what his take on the situation is, etc. That is not how it is done. You get your ducks in a row, and then you make it public when everybody is on board. I trust Jim Donovan. This is what we hired him to do, and his track record so far is excellent.

Can we get back to the five or six F’s?

Back to lurking and grousing. Esme woosh..

  306. Aaron October 28, 2010 10:20 pm

    Lopaka43:

AMEN, BROTHER!!! I find it so hilarious how people think that because the people in charge don’t report things to “them”, that nothing is being done. the WAC is a difficult conference to manage – all your members are chomping at the bit to leave for a better opportunity. whether or not Benson is a good commish is not for me to say. I don’t know anything about the specifics of his job or what he has to deal with. But i think it is safe to say that it is not a desirable job by any means.

  307. madeinhawaii October 28, 2010 10:29 pm

Hope our guys are focused on Idaho and not on all the WAC hullabaloo that’s been going on. Stay focused, execute, be flawless. UH cannot let their guard down. They must execute as if they have no weakness. They must defend as if there is no where to run, no where to pass, no where to hide. They must be perfect in every way so that the tape Boise sees is one that makes them all scratch their heads and wonder if…

    …love this…

“Pack looks to rebound at home against Aggies”

“The last thing the Nevada Wolf Pack wanted to do after losing to the Hawaii Warriors is sit around and think about it for two weeks.

But that is exactly what they had to do.

“You never want to sit on a loss like that,” Pack quarterback Colin Kaepernick said of the 27-21 loss in Honolulu that ruined the Pack’s dreams of a perfect season. “We just want to go back out and redeem ourselves.”

If the Pack had its way, it would have found a game somewhere between Honolulu and Reno on the trip back home two weeks ago just to get the bad taste out of their mouth…

…Make no mistake, the Pack is not likely going to forget what happened in Honolulu anytime soon.

“We got beat by a team that shouldn’t have beaten us,” Ault said.”

  326. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2010 1:04 am

I can understand people being mad.

I can understand people being mad at Benson.

Bottom line is Nevada, Fresno State and Boise State don’t want to be in the WAC.

It doesn’t matter who’s running the WAC.

And as much as as we like to think otherwise, people don’t want to be in a league with Hawaii. It’s too far. It’s too expensive. The distance between Hawaii and the West Coast is the distance between the West Coast and the East Coast.

Hawaii doesn’t bring anything to the table. It’s not a big TV market.

The Hawaii Exemption? That really only benefits a league team that has to play in Hawaii. For instance, if you’re, say, Alabama, and you’re scheduled to play six home games and six road games, if you add Hawaii, you’re still only playing six home games. And the guarantee Hawaii pays will probably make the trip to the islands a break-even venture. Now, say, you’re Idaho. Suppose you played six home games and six road games last year. By playing in Hawaii, you actually make money on an extra home game because you can add a non-conference game. So, actually, the Hawaii exemption really benefits only four teams a year. Same logic, there’s no incentive for a team to play Hawaii in October or November if the Warriors go independent. Remember, UH can schedule non-conference games in those months right now, and it can’t find any takers.

  327. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2010 1:07 am

Do I think Texas State or Texas-San Antonio will be the answers?

    Maybe, maybe not.

But at least you know a Texas school will be decent in the future. And UH can start to recruit in Texas. I don’t think they were getting many players out of Reno.

Found this article online about Nevada and it’s upcoming game with USU. Hawai’i is mentioned in here quite a bit. But here’s a quote from Coach Ault about the Hawai’i game that bugs me:

Make no mistake, the Pack is not likely going to forget what happened in Honolulu anytime soon.

“We got beat by a team that shouldn’t have beaten us,” Ault said.

    http://www.lahontanvalleynews.com/article/20101028/SPORTS/101029890/1055&ParentProfile=1045

  330. sportsforfun October 29, 2010 1:32 am

Well, Coach Ault, you did, so go take it out on USU. Move on. There’s nothing you can do about a game that happened two weeks ago.

  333. oxtail soup October 29, 2010 2:08 am

The Warriors know they need to keep their focus.

Keep things business-like, stay level, don’t get too high or low on a game. When the game is over, celebrate for a bit, then move on to the next one. Even keel. It’s something you see in the best teams.

But also, for the players – hopefully they don’t get caught up and distracted by the fans’ adulation, which comes with the wins and accolades. It’s great to have fan support, but it can be intoxicating and a distraction at a time when the team most needs to focus.

    Just take care of business.

    And that being said…

    GO WARRIORS!

  334. BigHiloFan2 October 29, 2010 5:52 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    imho

Texas is a answer. we have and will continue to have exposure in Texas. the Texas schools will be good, now or eventually.

down the road… in the next 30 days, anticipate a good media blitz by UHAD, for example…

    Mr. Jim Donovan :

plan on Hawaii continuing to have a good football program. and plan on scheduling Hawaii to play away games with very good football programs. if can, try to get those games played on “neutral” turf, but at least schedule ONE very good program away. a team we know will have a winning history. Alabama Arkansas LSU USC come to mind… back to back games with LaTech and LSU away would make my day…

and when dealing with Mr. Benson and his future scheduling deals, remind him that Hawaii neva go outta our way to run away. I’d like to think we’re like Ryan Henry… we keep our word.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I don’t think most people would be offended if you looked at their bookshelves. Most people would be pleased that you were taking an interest, and also, books are a good talking point. So I don’t think it’s rude in any way (unless you started insulting their reading choices).

  375. Turf Management NJ November 12, 2010 4:44 am

I really enjoyed this post. You describe this topic very well. Your turf management company should propose a professional assistance and advice towards the upgrade and care of your athletic fields. Grounds staff can be really creative and some have a skill of taking a hopeless playing field and turning it into your very own “field of dreams.” These results inspire your sports teams, but more importantly, instill a community satisfaction and restore confidence.

My aunt bought computer desks from a thrift shop, she bought spray paint so it will dry smooth and pretty and it did. Its also less of a hassle to just buy spray paint, that way you won’t get it on yourself which will be a bitch to wash off lol. when she did it it came out looking like she bought it from some expensive store.

  459. Forex Broker Reviews November 24, 2010 8:22 pm

No single strategy can work all the time. Its good to follow a trend but there are times when we need to analyze if the current price level is peak or bottom and at those time we need to go against the recet trend or a reversal. Similarly technical works for short-term trading but we can’t avoid fundamentals. Even the combination of fundamental and technical can fail and we have to also understand the market or mass psychology and market perception. Above all the trading decipline can win the game. This is the reason that we kepy one section on Psychology on ForexAbode.com.

    Awesome !!!!

    Signal Jammer

    – Solid construction, easy to operate- Work well with with all mobile frequency in Thailand (AIS, DTAC, 3G-2100) haven’t tried with 3G-EVDO or CDMA but should work fine- Applicable for any place you need quiet time (meeting room, classroom, even skytrain)

    Unbelieveable !!!!

    Awesome !!!!

    Signal Jammer

Very well built. Output is exactly what is described- a nice even swath of noise over the CDMA, 3G and GSM bands. It is putting out a few milliwatts and cell towers put out hundreds of watts- so it works only over 10-50 feet on CDMA and less on 3G. AT&T phones seem to be immune

    Must See !!!!
