Thanksgiving in El Paso

EL PASO — Brrrr. It’s cold in here. Must be some Warriors in the atmosphere …

They tell us that the wind-chill was about 35 degrees at practice. Well, at least that was assistant coach Cal Lee’s estimate. It was difficult to hear him because his head was wrapped in a towel.

The players said today’s 90-minute practice rivaled the Utah State game in terms of difficult conditions. At least it didn’t rain.

But the Warriors were able to finalize their schemes, audition more punt returners — Miah Ostrowski is in the mix — and get used to the time and altitude conditions.

Even though this a sports blog, I would please like to give my condolences to Lt. Governor Duke Aiona for the loss of his mother. He is a classy human being. He and the Governor weren’t ashamed to visit the homeless shelter in KaKaaKo many times to give well wishes. He talked to you on your level, not talk down to you. He spattered pidgin english jokenly, talked sports which he loves, a downright decent human being who wasn’t ashamed mixing it up with the homeless. A very likeable person. Happy Thanksgiving to him and his family and to all you bloggers. May God hold his mother in the palm of his hands. And may Mo Moniz and Greg Salas take out their talents out on New Mexico St. Both are classy human beings as well. And my prayers go out to Colt Brennan, the stupid NFL will give dog killer Michael Vick a chance, but not Colt, how hypocritical. Yes, I believe in giving second chances. But I keep things in perspective. The NFL rather win at all costs with a bad role model, than give a fighting chance to a talented young man.

  14. papajoe2 November 25, 2010 10:06 am

ST, I guess you erased some of the negative blogs from last night. MahaloNui loa for that. I got upset and maybe shouldn’t have written anything so I apologize for such, not only to you, but to everyone on this blog. Pau already. If you want to delete this for bringing back memories, its OK with me as I got my apology said.

The Wahine being swept by Utah State was a SHOCKER!! Who would have imagined that. However, they’ll still be going to the BIG DANCE. GO WAHINE!! One ‘snap’ and clear!

  16. NorthShoreFan November 25, 2010 10:10 am

Dropped in to wish everyone a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

The year till now has been quite a challenge. Couple of friends had strokes and one a rare and nasty skin virus that almost took his life.

One suffers some paralysis the other is lucky to only have to deal with double vision that is correctable. The other is on his feet, gaining strength, dealing with some loss of vision but very, very up beat and meeting the challenges head on.

Yes I have many things to be thankful for and will be reflecting on all the good that has happened to me and my family.

To the atheltes who represent the 808…BIG MAHALO FOR ALL THE SPECIAL MOMENTS!

MAHALO TO THE TSAIKOS WHO ARE MOST AND BESTEST UH FANS!

MAHALO TO FRIENDS AND FAMILIES WHO HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY!

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE THANKSGIVING!

    ps…..you too steve…

  17. papajoe2 November 25, 2010 10:10 am

#13, RS. Ditto for that to Duke. I played baseball with Duke as a kid. Met him again a few years ago. Very nice, down to earth, person.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Happy Turkey Day to all my Tsai-ko friends! You guys are da bestest!

I’ll take one of the extra tickets if still available, please. Gracias. Doomo arigato.

ST – you at the casino yet? 😀 Don’t get lost! 🙄

  20. RupertDaStupert November 25, 2010 10:22 am

And Neil Abercrombie was always friendly to total strangers even before becoming a politician. Always waving, saying ‘hello’, driving that vintage cab of his. He and Duke are not phony’s that smile only when a TV cameras on them. They are genuinely nice, friendly people. If there was a contest for the nicest human beings, both would be at the top. Too bad one couldn’t be in the same party as the others so the people of Hawaii can reapt the benefits of their brain power together, and Hawaii would be better for it for human beings with “real aloha’. Rarely have I met two nicer people politician or not.

  21. Bulla November 25, 2010 10:28 am

happy thanksgiving to one and all,

North Shore Fan, hang in there, you are in my prayers. let us all be thankful, if for nothing else, just the air we breathe…..i hope that everyone has enough to eat today, has a chance to make some memories, and has a chance to be thankful.

Future Of NMSU Athletics Being Studied

    By ABC-7 Reporter Darren Hunt

    POSTED: 5:34 pm MST November 24, 2010

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — The business of Division 1 athletics can be difficult, especially in this

economy. At places like New Mexico State, where low attendance has always been a factor, it can

lead to some very tough decisions.Recently ABC-7 sat down with NMSU Director of Athletics Dr. McKinley

Boston to discuss the future of the Aggie athletic program and what the school is doing to make sure

it continues to compete at the Division 1 level.”A major concern of mine is basketball tickets,” Dr. Boston

said. “We had a WAC championship last year, we had an NCAA caliber team. We averaged slightly

under 6,000 fans. Two years earlier we averaged about 9,000 fans.” That and other financial issues

surrounding the program have led NMSU’s sixth year AD Dr. McKinley Boston to hire a

consultant to do some research.”Especially as it relates to ticket sales, fundraising,

corporate sales,” Dr. Boston said. “We need to better understand our market.”While the

Aggies have won in basketball, they’ve never been able to establish anything consistent in football,

where they’ve had just four winning seasons in 40 years and no bowl game for a half century and

counting.”There’s always discussions during periods of fiscal austerity about, and especially if you’re

not having winning football, whether or not the investment is worth it,” Dr. Boston said.Still, Dr.

Boston said the university is committed to staying Division 1 in football.”I think the question, like many

many schools around the country are going through now, is whether or not you can operate at the

same level and or sustain expenditures at the same level.”Playing in a town of about 100,000,

Dr. Boston said it’s much more difficult than what UTEP faces in a town of about a million.”It’s a

hell of a lot easier to be more independent,” he said.NMSU has averaged only about 16,000 per

football game over the past decade. Meanwhile, UTEP has averaged about twice that.”The one

disappointment for me after being here for six years is that I have not seen the return on investment

in football,” Dr. Boston said, “but I know we’re getting better.”Despite only two wins this season, Dr.

Boston is convinced that the Aggies — under second-year head coach Dewayne Walker — are getting

more competitive. He said the biggest issue NMSU is facing is less money coming from the state,

which is dealing with a massive deficit. Currently the athletic department gets a $4 million a year

subsidy.”I know there’s going to be budget cuts,” he said.

“The question at this point is the depth of those cuts.”

Bulla, the downward spiral of our economy is not privy to one party or the other party. It was a combination of bad things that occured. Many people were involved in it. But if people are like Abercrombie or Aiona, we have a great fighting chance of righting our economy. Five-O is giving our economy a boost. Happy Thanksgiving also to Alex O’Laughlin (O’lock len), Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, genius writers Lenkov and team, and all the rest of the cast members. Thank you for giving our economy a boost. And Five-O won the ratings war this monday 22. It is winning just like our Warriors! I love it! We have hope!

  30. HawaiiMongoose November 25, 2010 10:49 am

I’m confident the Wahine will bounce back and make a run in the NCAA tournament. The loss last night will turn out to have been a blessing in disguise.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  31. duffer November 25, 2010 10:54 am

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING TSAIKOS!

From the kid, whitey, wherever he is, and myself.

  32. Like most of the people here, I was stunned at the Wahine loss yesterday. It was a combination of great playing by their opponents driven by a need & desire to show that they can do it along with a – for lack of any better way of expressing it – a failure to communicate amongst Hawai`i’s players.

However, I would never, ever personally attack them as individuals nor take on the coaching staff. Yes, we who were watching or listening to the game were deeply disappointed, but what we felt was probably one tenth of one tenth percent of what the players & the coaching staff had to deal with in the locker room after the game.

If anything, I hope that the football team has learned something from the volleyball loss and will show up in person ready to play Thursday.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone – be thankful that we are able to do good and do well at the same time.

I watched a Frontline show last night after we came home from watching the Rainbow Warriors team win their game the hard way – hustle bustle -that I’d recorded the night before about decisions made by families when their loved ones come to the end of the (life) line. I certainly hope that by the time I’m at that point we will have the legal right to choose the way we shuff off this mortal coil.

Back to work – we’re helping prepare dinner for 50+ people later this afternoon. If you don’t have any plans & want to join us, please send an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com & include your phone number.

  33. What happened to my “corrrecting” post? Change Thursday to Saturday, please.

    Happy ThanksLiving!

That’s the Tsai-ko way… Some talk. planny action!

W-Doc. Saw that Frontline too. Love that show. Remember to give your proxy to someone who can be strong enough to be faithful to your wishes when the time comes. And keep the needs of your loved ones in mind when you make those wishes known. My friend wanted to pass naturally at home and indicated no resuscitation. When he started to go, his family called the ambulance and he was hooked up for several days in the hospital before they finally let him go. Everyone has needs.

Hugs and blessings to the Wahine..

    Go Warriors!

#36 Liz. My husband had an Advanced Health Care Directive, with a DNR (Do Not Resusitate) order. It was specific as to where and how my husband wished to spend his last days. While it came sooner than we hoped, it was how my husband wanted, at home, among his things, in his man cave. With his big screen tv and his dog. Hospice Hawaii became my 911. God Bless them.

I wiould prefer to call out our recruiting and coaches.

That said, I do not understand why “Steve” was allowed to make the many mean remarks he did last night during the V ball match in regards to a single player.

    How To Observe Thanksgiving

Count your blessings instead of your crosses.

Count your gains instead of your losses.

    Count your joys instead of your woes;

Count your friends instead of your foes.

    Count your smiles instead of your tears;

Count your courage instead of your fears.

    Count your full years instead of your lean;

Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.

    Count your health instead of your wealth;

Count on God instead of yourself.

Yep, but have so much family here at same time; could not schedule time for you and Kumi.

One nephew flew in from Denver; his bother flew in from Seattle; another came from Honolulu; Mrs A-House’s brother drove in from Los Angeles.

Had tickets for the WAC VB tournament and met with my current employment boss who moved to Vegas to discuss happenings back in the office.

Then, we caught the cold and most of the day spent resting/sleeping; to top it off we did not expect it to be so cold and had to cut back on things we had planned.

Very little time even for the casino!

One word says it all – crap!!!!

Hope you and Kumi are well and hope we can see you folks on our next trip!

This “freeze warning” condition reminds me of our trip to the Sugar Bowl where a cold front came in and just sat in the area for days – low temps of 28 degrees with highs in the low 40s and the wind blowing or howling.

Tuesday and Wednesday, in Vegas, the wind speed was estimated at 30 mph – making the chill factor into the high teens and low 20s.

BTW, what time is the NaMasu game on PPV on Saturday?

    azwarrior22,

Contact the Hawaiian Club at NAU or ASU & see if anyone can give you a ride. I know some of the students/graduates are probably going to the game in Las Cruces.

  78. A-House November 25, 2010 2:24 pm

Let’s put it this way – if TCU announces it move to the Big East, the MWC may have good news for Hawaii fans sooner than expected!

As the little chubby kid says on TV, “things are looking up”!

  79. Bulla November 25, 2010 2:31 pm

    Mr A-House,

“…little chubby kid…” reminds me of an oxymoron…..haha

    2010 UH football schedule: http://hawaiiathletics.com/schedule.aspx?path=football&amp.

We’d like to patronize a different location for each of the away games and will do our best to consider seating arrangements for fairly large group, fuud pricing/quality/quantity/variety, size/number of televisions/quality/quantity, location, parking availability, and whether reservation deposit is required. uhfan808 – Count me in!

BTW, not sure when the annual no parking on Keeaumoku will start, so if there are no stalls available in the Imua Lounge parking lot, I suggest parking at WallyWorld, 2nd floor, mauka side. Should be plenty of parking. May also be able to park in the HMSA bldg, but DO NOT park on the upper floors or you will have to walk down. I’ll check to see if they have anything going on in the bldg tomorrow.

Mahalo for da pic-chahs, ST! Good idea to warm back up in the sauna or hot tub. Maybe they need to do that Sat. a.m., but gotta dry the hair before getting out in the cold… nah, don’t do that… boys won’t take the time to dry their hair.

Hope A-House & family get well before coming home. Stay well, Midori7! Hope my Mom isn’t freezing in LV.

  86. Hilo Moon November 25, 2010 3:19 pm

    Big Hilo

In yesterday’s blog you asked if I was on the plane. I was “flying” at home with Bud Weiser. He doesn’t say much, but he’s damn good company.

  87. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2010 3:20 pm

The team is eating Thanksgiving dinner now.

  88. PowderPuff November 25, 2010 3:26 pm

Happy Thanksgiving, Tsaikos…and to the Road Warriors, including you ST. Nice seeing you yesterday morning. Heard Sister Stretch was on the same plane as you last night. Hope you stay awake for the casinos tonight. 🙂 And thanks for the special blessings, BHF2.

  93. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2010 4:45 pm

Things you don’t want to hear the flight attendant say to the person behind you: “Here are two bags if you get really sick.”

The kid kept puking (his parents were in first class).

And then when we got off the plane, he started puking on the ground.

I guess he needed a third bag.

  94. whitey November 25, 2010 4:50 pm

There actually were other half-naked men, but the others took too long to pose, and my camera lens was starting to get foggy from the heat.

  109. Stephen Tsai November 25, 2010 8:02 pm

By the way, “Faster” is an awesome movie.

Of course, it would be even more awesome if the multi-plex didn’t run out of food. Kekaula got the last hotdog.

I really want to see this guy Steve. I have this idea and stereotype and I just want to know if it is true.

I will bring a pumpkin pie to the tv-gate. Too much fuuuuudddd…

  122. bb November 25, 2010 9:30 pm

When I was lurking over on the Volleyshots blog (the one that CL banned him from) he said that he was a “mover and shaker” here in Hawaii. He also started a rumor that CL was out of a job and obviously that is not the case. The hatred (and it was truly hatred) that he had for Dani was unbearable. It became clear that he wasn’t a frustrated fan. He was a deranged fan. Ironically I started only lurking there because I just wanted to read the banter between Steve and the rest of the regulars there. Now that he is banned it isn’t as exciting.

I remember him saying that he goes to the softball games. I might just have to show up to one to see this dude and what is his m/o. I invite his buddy longboarder to show up to a game as well. lol.

  123. tommui November 25, 2010 9:35 pm

Shakti and Dr. Wang: our prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.

And Colt, you know the whole state is rooting for you.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Yeah, I want to see how perfect he is. You know, run him through some drills and then give a firsthand honest assessment or critique. I’m no expert but I can spot a scrub and FWIW, Dani Mafua is no scrub.

  126. Derek November 25, 2010 10:08 pm

In Las Vegas right now it is 37 degrees. How would you like to play a Mountain West game in Vegas with Hawaii and UNLV in 2 years in late November. It would be pretty cold. I wonder how many UH fans would go to that game? Nice problem to have.

  127. Support Rainbow Wahine Softball November 25, 2010 10:18 pm

Just read about that family of nine in Pearl City that had their house burned down. They couldnt afford to pay for their electric bill which is why they relied on candles at night.

    Terrible.

Thank God the American Red Cross is taking care of them.

It’s times like these that all of us here that donate to several UH sports can possibly also look into helping out with donations when possible to the American Red Cross.

You just never know when you or someone you know needs their help.

  128. homey ℞ November 25, 2010 10:52 pm

Steve – you up? I know you can contact either Pomai or Kazz. Find out from them the directions to the t-gate. Looking forward to meeting you. If you bring something that requires grilling I suggest you bring it before 1:00 p.m.

  129. Ralph November 25, 2010 11:10 pm

UH faces its second Big West basketball opponent on Dec. 1, at Cal Poly, they are 3-2 for the year.

  130. Ralph November 25, 2010 11:20 pm

Wahine Basketball tournament opens tomorrow, 2:15 pm with North Caroline facing off with Washington State. Illinois vs Long Beach State (Big West), Gonzaga vs Mississippi, then at 7 p.m. Na Wahine faces North Carolina Central.

Better than shopping Black Friday at Ala Moana, there will be a smaller crowd at the SSC.

Thanks for putting up this article. I’m unquestionably frustrated with struggling to search out germane and rational comment on this subject. Everybody nowadays goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. 152. James November 26, 2010 6:43 am

Hey made in Hawaii, I made your plain cucumber namasu for Thanksgiving. Thanks.

Here is my pupu contribution for New Year’s when you are watching the college bowl games or for your tail gate parties:

    Oyster Rolls:

    l tub surimi

    1 can water chestnut, chopped

    finely chopped green onions

2 cans (8 oz.) oysters, chopped (drain liquid)

    1 egg

Mix ingredients, the last is surimi

Roll in fine panko (shape in small balls or like hamburger patties) and deep fry (olive oil)

  153. papajoe2 November 26, 2010 6:45 am

Sorry James, but what is surimi? Recipe looks good if I knew what is surimi.

  155. Pomai November 26, 2010 7:13 am

Ok BSU vs Reno today at 5:00 PM – who to root for that is the question? On one hand I would like to see BSU win an mess with all the talking heads on who should play for the NC, but then I would like to see them lose so we could have part of the WAC title, but seeing how they beat us and we would have the same record I don’t think it should be shared.

    What to do —————-

  156. jm2375 November 26, 2010 7:17 am

Pomai – the bad thing about BSU losing to Reno (ain’t gonna happen) is that we would have to share the championship with Reno. 😈

chopsueyboy – yeah but can’t you just see the faces of all the talking heads if BSU won the whole darn thing, I think Mark May Kirk Herbertdodo would both have a heart attack right on the TV. LOL But you know they would still think the BcS guys where better teams, the jerks.

  159. 99club November 26, 2010 7:36 am

    Pomai-

I’ll be rooting for Boise just to stick it to the BCS. If Auburn loses today at Alabama (Alabama’s favored by 4-5 pts) then Boise’s projected to be in the championship game. If Oregon slips up against either Arizona or Oregon St., then even better. After I watched Nevada blow out Cal earlier this season, no way did I think that Cal would keep it close against Oregon. Should be an interesting next couple of weeks.

Checked on the National Weather Service site, re: yesterday’s temps in El Paso for the practice. Looks like the wind chill was actually in the 20’s. Brrrrrr.

  160. LizKauai -iPad November 26, 2010 7:41 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Yup #158. I’d like to see some stammering crow-eating Herbie action coming out of his Colt-and Hawaii- dissing mouf.

  161. CoolEthan November 26, 2010 7:45 am

I’m going with Boise for all the chips.

It’s all about the big picture for the WAC win, showing the nation that this conference is capable of achieving and deserving the Gold Medal.

I do believe there capable of winning # 1 this year

If this doesn’t happen now, all the dumbbutz out there from media, coaches, football fans will stay on their BCS rightousness, saying the WAC is the lowest of bottom conferences.

Hawaii is, and showing there the 2nd best in this conference.

  162. 99club November 26, 2010 7:46 am

Alabama…hmmm. That name sounds familiar. Where did I hear…oh, yeah. NOW I remember that school:

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation !

WOW the funny thing about Steve is I LIKE HIM !

I find his sport knowledge on UH athletics insightful and he does

bring interest to the blog on knowing what kind of person he truly is ?

I am not surprise that no one has met him as the way he goes after Miss

Mafu he is not endearing folks here to him as I agree with longboard that

he can get in some serious physical harm IF any close friends or relatives

was to meet him face to face saying the unkind words to Dani.

I don’t know why he attributes the wahines not being successful because

of Dani as she is a TOUGH player for the wahines and has GREAT respect

from her coaches and teammates. I do hope that he comes out to one of

your tailgates or calf calls as I do believe for him that fellowship will do him

a world of good and listening to you good folks with sound minds and judgement

will give him a sense of purpose and understanding to UH athletics and it’s

    COURAGEOUS athletes !

Had a good Thanksgiving with good friends and family members. Will

be checking the Warriors out today against New Mexico State as a win

these last two games will definetly send off a successful season for the

    Warrior football team.

Wishing all you folks a GREAT day and IF any one can reach my friend Steve

I have a GIFT to send him as some how this guy really needs to be embrace

    and hugged !

  166. observer November 26, 2010 8:54 am

Steve was banned from the other site for attacking the individual student athlete, the coaches, then turning on the Blog Host and the other posters.

There are a thousand million other things to comment on. Let’s please move on!

  167. d1島 November 26, 2010 9:00 am

observer: I do understand and am very well of his situation on CL volleyball blog. My purpose is trying some ALOHA to him as Homey suggested of a tailgate invite. I knda gather he has

wore out any LOVE to him because of his negative rants as that is sad but understanding at this juncture.

Oh well as you say “let’s move on” !

Texas area can get cold quickly.

We heard of a cold front coming to Dallas and called our friend before we left L.A.

He said it was 80 degrees and nothing to worry about.

We landed a few hours later and it was 19 degrees

and by the time we finished dinner, it was minus 19

and I was ready to kill our friend.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

It was a massive day for electronic cigarette manufacturers and vendors. A high court ruled that the FDA can not treat the electric cigarette as a drug. The court ruling stated: Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered goods that enable users to inhale nicotine vapor with out fire, smoke, ash, or carbon monoxide,” the court said in its ruling. “The liquid nicotine in each e-cigarette is derived from natural tobacco plants.”

While this seems obvious to everyone this point seemed to escape the FDA until now. So we can all breathe a bit deeper these days know that our electronic cigarettes are secure.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
