Talking the talk

Quarterback Andrew Manley, who recently received his requested release from his New Mexico State scholarship, has initiated discussions with UH about the possibility of playing for the Warriors.

The Warriors still are determining if they have an available initial scholarship (they’re limited to 25 a year), meaning Manley might have to be a walk-on during the fall semester. He also would need to gain admission into UH. But those are questions that will be answered in the coming weeks. For now, they’re talking.

* * * * *

There is a strong probability that offensive lineman Jordan Loeffler, who faces knee surgery, will medically retire. In any scenario, Loeffler will remain on scholarship.

* * * * *

Mike Edwards is the only undrafted free-agent cornerback at the New York Jets’ rookie minicamp, which started today.

    Happy Aloha Friday!

Mom’s special weekend getting started. I’ll be treating the Queen of the ceded lands to a staycation weekend just down the street at the Aulani. A little relaxing down time for the Tutu keeps my sports activity options wide open for the upcoming season.

Happy Mother’s Day weekend to all the Mom’s!

SOMEHWAT CHANGE OF SUBJECT: The Stadium Facilities Special Fund passed in 2012 and signed into law as ACT 282 – 2012 was administravely attached to the Public Land Development Corporation – although all decisions as to what would be done with the lands were be under the jurisdiction of the Stadium Authority. The PLDC has been repealed so the the SFSF is also now dead. There is an Aloha Stadium operational fund established in the early 1970s to cover everything from purchasing toilet paper to paying for travel exenses which some people think could be used to place CIP funds; however, no one in the Attorney General’s Office has been assigned to issue a ruling.

If he weren’t a local HS grad would there “absolutely” be any enthusiasm for a 1 for 1 QB who went 1-11 with an 18-11 TD/INT ratio and an average of 230 yards passing per game last season? 🙄

  31. Warrior Dave May 10, 2013 9:10 am

Great to have a Hawaii boy return home and decide to come to UH. But I think they all need to come back as a walk-on and earn a scholarship. There are always consequences for decisions made. Any open/un-used scholarships should be used to reward walk ons. But its just my opinion.

  32. al May 10, 2013 9:40 am

perhaps mr. tom mui would know where in chinatown one could find such a pillow.

i am guessing it is for mother’s day, therefore, amazon.com would be too late again for yet a mother’s day piece.

  33. ai-eee-soos May 10, 2013 9:42 am

How many schools offered AM ?

UH and NaMaSu – that’s all I can think of.

    Why only 2 ???

As I posted previously, AM can walk on, and mebbe earn a scholarship for his last year.

  34. A-House May 10, 2013 9:43 am

If there is a single scholarship left, what will the “other” local boys from BCS schools who have initiated discussions with UH to return home and play for the Warriors?

I understood that Coach Chow had a policy for local boys coming home that they would walk-on and then be able to garner a scholarship. This would hold true for any transfer to Hawaii.

If this is true, then should not Manley be in this category? Am I miss reading comments – as usual!

Is Dustin Elisera a Dline player? Me forget already.

  35. A-House May 10, 2013 9:49 am

  42. tommui May 10, 2013 10:15 am

    ST #9 = Mongolian pillow.

Google it – lots of places such as Amazon, Overstock.com etc. But if it was for Mother’s Day, you should have asked last Monday!

AL’s suggestion about Chinatown: they probably have the NZ product but for you, they’ll probably tell you that it came from Mongolia.

  43. jimmy the lock May 10, 2013 10:20 am

Did Graham walk-on and then earned a schollie?

  44. A-House May 10, 2013 10:24 am

I do hope that Apple and Jay are on the same page when it comes to UH athletics for dropping Football is the “death knife” for all sports as none of the others can generate the income that football can.

Is the Kaleo situation a “window” to how Apple will do things as Chancellor – going public before close door discussions? Dave Reardon seems to follow Apple’s train of thought or did I miss read or misunderstand what Reardon wrote?

Yes, there is always the possibility to “down grading” football, but can Hawaii support a D1 football program with the limited support from “upper campus” or the legislature or the general public?

I recall my speech professor telling our class that if many, many, many more people lived and spoke “pidgin” in Hawaii, then it would be classified as a dialect like the “south”, Bronx or New England.

Similar to TV rating or viewership, it’s all about the number of people. On my last trip to Kona, I envisioned the entire area from the Kona airport to and including Kamuela as a vast city of 5 to 9 million people. Same could be said for the Hamakua coastline. Only the Big Island can accommodate the population.

OK, Rambling Rose, get off the bucket and get some water!! gunfunit!!!!!!!!!!

  47. jimmy the lock May 10, 2013 10:58 am

After further thought, I think Graham didn’t walk-on and was given a schollie. Seeing that he was granted a release from OSU, counted as a 2012 recruit, enrolled in Jan. 2012, and Chow tried to recruit him out of high school…yeah I think he didn’t walk-on.

  48. Stephen Tsai May 10, 2013 11:07 am

    Graham did not walk on.

Schroeder walked on, but was awarded a scholarship at the end of training camp.

Justin Alo and Ikaika Woolsey are on scholarship.

Jeremy Higgins is not on scholarship.

  49. jimmy the lock May 10, 2013 11:09 am

GO WAHINE! Game time is soon!

  50. dedicatedfan May 10, 2013 11:10 am

If Andrew Manley truly wants to play for the Warriors, and there is no scholarship available, he should pay his dues and walk-on for one semester. He can always get a student loan for the fall semester, then have 3 years to pay it off, while on scholarship.

  51. Stephen Tsai May 10, 2013 11:11 am

    My take:

At next week’s BOR meetings, there’s a possible vote on whether to forgive the athletic department’s accumulated deficit.

Apple’s comments were a pre-emptive strike. If the debt is going to be forgiven, there needs to be assurances the athletic department will not incur additional deficits. It’s like if your parents agree to pay off your charge-card bills, there needs to be assurances you’re not going to rack ’em up again.

So, yes, we all know what Apple is trying to say.

But the problem is that we’re always saying: “We know what Apple is trying to say …”

Why, oh, why, can’t he just say what he means to say?

That’s so puzzling. But that’s also why the leader of the Manoa campus is not being lobbied as the successor to the leader of the UH system.

He’s a smart man. He has good intentions. But, dammit, just say what you mean.

    Grrrrr.

  52. Stephen Tsai May 10, 2013 11:13 am

As many of you know, Manley’s brother is seriously ill. There are a lot of medical bills, so money might not be as readily available.

There are several fund-raisers for the brother’s medical care. I’ll try to post some links.

  53. al May 10, 2013 11:29 am

andrew manley should be awarded a scholie if one is available. that could happen if one of the 2013 recruits doesn’t get in.

he would be deserving i would think based upon the fact that we need another capable qb in the fold.

so we have taylor “made” graham looking more and more like the solid choice.

behind him we have schroeder who is iffy because of his bad back and he is a senior.

then there is higgins who has yet to prove himself as having the d1 arm and the rather green ikaika woolsley who could otherwise end up the #2 qb.

we all know how important it is to have a more than capable backup qb. therefore, if one’s available then it is very logical to award manley a full ride.

If Manly isn’t given an exemption to be eligible to play this year then he wouldn’t be a factor for this year.

  57. A-House May 10, 2013 12:12 pm

    al:

please do not forget Zwahlen (sp) who will be here for the 2015 season after a 2 year mission with very little time to work out and probably out of shape

but with Manley, would he not be in the same “back-up” mode as the others and leaving the same time as Graham?

did Chow get a commitment for a QB in 2014? I know he offered a Florida player and another player from Georgia who remains committed to USC.

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid May 10, 2013 12:15 pm

Good luck to Mike and Manley! Hope both are able to make their respective teams.

  60. Stephen Tsai May 10, 2013 12:42 pm

Not one QB on the UH roster is a proven DIV 1 player.

  84. Derek May 10, 2013 2:06 pm

IMO, Andrew Manley is NOT the Holy Grail QB that UH is looking for. That’s not saying he shouldn’t be on scholarship. It’s up to Norm Chow. Me personally, I’d like to see our QB be able to move and mobile. Keelan Ewaliko has speed, Zwahlen has speed, Alo can run. Schroeder is slow. Need some turbo boosting. Tape a cheetah to his back.

Congratulations to the Rainbow Wahine softball and water polo teams. Great job. The softball player that really came on this year is Jasmine Zamora. She,Keiki Carlos, Leisha Liilii, Kayla Wartner, and Sharla Klibenstein will be the strength of the team next year. We need to find the new ACE of the staff for next year.

  85. d1shima May 10, 2013 2:10 pm

    ppj2,

At least AM played in Div. 1 compared to last years qbs

    At the very least.

At least Wile E. Coyote has experience doing roadwork with a real Road Runner….

  87. BG May 10, 2013 2:42 pm

The highest praise to Na Wahine for taking of business. Had the good fortune of sitting across from Jazmine at the SB banquet. Asked her what was the difference for her from the beginning of the season to now. She said the opportunity to play and get comfortable. She always felt she could hit. Was all dressed up and looking great, but I wouldn’t arm wrestle with her…she’s spent her time in the weight room!

  88. 3-Prong May 10, 2013 2:48 pm

Das da how Rainbow Wahine Polo and Softballers! Mo Tirsty now!

  89. Kevin May 10, 2013 2:53 pm

Zamora, pound for pound is the strongest player on the team and probably the most “pure athlete” on the team. Her first sport is basketball and she’s come around full circle to being a damn fine softball player. She’s putting herself in serious contention to be leadoff next season.

  97. Shoko May 10, 2013 4:32 pm

I think Manley was the most sacked and hurried QB in the country. If he wasn’t, then that title might have to Schroeder. Poor pass protection (O-line) and coaching (DeWayne Walker) can make any QB look bad. However, having only one year left of eligibility, I’m not sure how much he can contribute to the program. Can’t think of any other position he would fit given his skill set. Maybe as a signal caller?

  98. Pomai May 10, 2013 4:34 pm

19-4 in conference, 42-11 overall. Tell me again why we shouldn’t host a regional? No Clue At ALL!!!!!!!

  100. dedicatedfan May 10, 2013 4:45 pm

Hey Pomai, I will give you 3 letters why the Softbows will not host a Regional, S.E.C. The SEC will probably have 8-10 teams hosting regionals. I do not agree with it, but that is the way it is.

  101. wafan May 10, 2013 5:32 pm

Thank you, I have recently been looking for information approximately this topic for a long time and yours is the best I have found out till now. But, what about the conclusion? Are you positive about the source?|What i do not understood is in fact how you are not really much more well-favored than you might be right now. You are very intelligent.

manley is a good sizes qb and he has a strong arm plus he hasd1 experience the win-lose collum dont matter to me because it was new mexico state but he did lead them to beat minnesota i believe. Personally ive seen manly throw he is accurate and has a strong arm and i know for a fact his family are big uh supporters regular season ticket holders.

Its such as you learn my mind! You seem to know a lot approximately this, like you wrote the ebook in it or something. I feel that you just could do with a few percent to power the message home a little bit, however instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A great read. I will certainly be back.

ST ~ Check the Ocean Queen shop at Ward Warehouse for that sheepskin pillow. 683-8598

    Congratulations to Na Wahine SB!!!

Hope everything works out for Manley. Prayers for his brother.

    GO Mikey! Edwards, that is.

  110. A-House May 10, 2013 8:11 pm

    Mr Jay:

I do hope your “coffers” have a fund to pay for championship whatever for the Wahine waterpolo and softball teams for they are deserving of a ring or bracelet.

If not, will the Tsaikos step up for the softball team? Pomai & Kevin, what say you?

Coach Coolen needs to keep an eye on Kamalani Dung, Kamehameha pitcher, only a sophomore. There are also quite a few outstanding players in that sophomore class, and the freshman class right after that. The Junior high school class does not seem that strong though.

  114. jm2375 (iPad) May 10, 2013 8:54 pm

  116. Willie May 10, 2013 9:56 pm

Don’t understand all the excitement about manly. He’s not that accurate and take a look at his foot work, got slow in cement foot speed & below average agility. Despite one former blog host’s annointment of manly being the best Hawaii HS QB ever, he is not the Warrior saviour.

  117. Lawyers May 11, 2013 1:00 am

Hm, a history of prolapsed disk, and you’re thinking of a heavily-deskbound job (in a stressful city I’ve lived in both and Manchester’s generally much nicer’)?

  119. Ha Chris! I was thinking the same thing. It’s entertainment not a documentary. Lighten up people! It’s sci-fi for heavens sake. SB has always been kind of boring to me but I love space flicks so I’ll see it when it comes around.Report this comment as spam or abuse

I love Paula Deen recipes as well as her show. As soon as I saw the program with this, I couldn wait to make it for Christmas dessert. It not a ポールスミス アウトレットポールスミス 時計 http://www.paulsmithland.com/ difficult recipe, ポールスミス 財布 ポールスミスバッグ http://www.paulsmithcity.com/ a bit time consuming as there the cake, drying it out a bit, then the pudding, but no big deal (my cooking time for the cake was a decent amount longer than the 2025 minutes, and I have a hot oven that i have to watch and I listened to ポールスミス(Paul Smith) ポールスミス通販 http://www.paulsmithsunny.com/ other reviewers and made a bit more pudding for the cake..

  123. RedZone May 11, 2013 6:05 am

Taylor being groomed to be the starter it would be good to have a backup with D1 game experience. The more the better. As to whether Manley can play or not will be up to the coaches. They can find video of the games he played in.
