Recruiting update

• Liloa Nobriga is going to Colorado. One of the selling points, according to his father, was that “Colorado and UH play three times in the next four years.”  Gee, who made that schedule? Oh, wait, now I remember.
• Oregon State is making a late push for Chad Lopati.
• A relative has been trying to convince Wade Keli‘ikipi to stick with UH. But there are a lot of personal issues involved, and it looks like he’s bound for Oregon.
• But Zach Masch said he’s going to turn down a UCLA offer and sign with UH.
• George Daily-Lyles also told us he’s sticking with UH.

any word on what the coaches will do now with 2 decommitments today? Do we have any other OL that we can maybe now offer?

    1st…..Go Purps !

    cheepono

  6. 808flowmaster February 3, 2009 10:37 am

btw…I work at a local radio station group, and Colt was just here doing some interviews. He’s still the same down-to-earth, level-headed guy. So good to see that nowadays.

  7. A-House February 3, 2009 10:37 am

Too bad we lost Wade, but best to him and Burton.

Unfortunately, Coach Mack and staff cannot make any contacts for replacements until Wednesday or Thursday, but hope they already have players identified so offer can be made immediately.

  8. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2009 10:39 am

Don’t think it’s over with Keli‘ikipi, although it does look gloomy.
But the Oregon situation isn’t so stable. Bellotti might be getting out after recruiting, and I think there’s a change on the d-line staff.

  9. rog February 3, 2009 10:42 am

What happened with Pierce Burton? This one has to hurt as well since we can’t find a replacement right away.

  10. wayoutwest February 3, 2009 10:42 am

    another lost commitment?

  11. Ralph February 3, 2009 10:43 am

    TOP twenty

  12. jm2375 February 3, 2009 10:44 am

Morning ST! Any signs that someone is going to wait till after Wed to sign? Aren’t there usually 1 or 2 a year?

  13. A-House February 3, 2009 10:45 am

    ST, good neighbor:

If Wade knew this BEFORE commiting, then why?

I hope that family members can talk to Wade and sort out things.

Liked the post by Garret on previous blog where a “former” USC player, I believe, is offering advice to prospects on it’s not the school’s name and glory, but what is really there and not there. Yes, players can say that they were on the “national championship” team, but did they play or rode the bench?

  14. Garret February 3, 2009 10:46 am

I hope that there isn’t any more bad news today…it would be nice to have a *positive* surprise now!

  15. Ralph February 3, 2009 10:46 am

    Al you snoozing again

  16. al™ February 3, 2009 10:46 am

    how deceitful is that?

you ask a kid to come to your school all the while knowing that you are going to bag it out of there.
talk about ethics or lack of.

  17. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2009 10:46 am

    Haven’t heard anything on Pierce.
But he was going to grayshirt, anyway.

and who knows, LN and WK never sign nothing yet. they could still have a change of heart at the last minute tomorrow morning. they are 17-18 year olds, so you never know. i’m happy we’re able to keep a destin stewart, let’s give him praise for taking that chance and coming all the way out here.

  19. MeiLing February 3, 2009 10:47 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

I hope that Princess Leila can provide videos of the Super Games. She does a great job. Please…

  20. Garret February 3, 2009 10:47 am

Losing Burton would really be sad…OL recruits were critical for this class.

  21. Garret February 3, 2009 10:49 am

Nice to see that AC is still giving back to the community. He can definitely serve as an inspiration to kids!

The new Dreamers also got a pep talk from Denver Nugget Anthony Carter, who participated in the I Have a Dream program growing up in Atlanta.

“There are going to be lots of obstacles and bumps, but never give up on your dream,” he said. “Try to stay around positive people who want you to go to school and want you to succeed.”

He told the students that he was one of 14 kids raised by his grandmother, joined the I Have a Dream program in fifth grade and then dropped out of high school to make money playing basketball in an adult league.

Three years after dropping out, he was encouraged to get his GED so he could play for a college. So he went back to the I Have a Dream program for help getting into an adult education center. He earned his GED, was awarded a basketball scholarship to the University of Hawaii and went on to play in the NBA.

“I just kept doing what I had to do to make it,” he said.

  22. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2009 10:49 am

If Keliikipi bolts, it has to be for other reasons.
He’s kind of a quiet kid, and he doesn’t know anyone up there.
Plus, UH had some pretty strong home visits.
    We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

  23. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2009 10:49 am

Now, if only A.C. can get into the Circle of Honor …

  24. Garret February 3, 2009 10:50 am

    Article and video of Colt.

Brennan just got back yesterday and says he plans to stay about a month. he’s thrilled to be back in the state where he set 31 NCAA records.

“Looking back now, this is exactly what I want to do, I want to come back here, want to make a difference, I want to leave this place which gave me a second chance and gave me everything, every dream i ever wanted,” Brennan said. “I want to do a lot back for this place and show my appreciation.”

  25. al™ February 3, 2009 10:51 am

i am not so worried about losing one hs oline guy.

we have a stable of horses for this year and some for next year. we could still find one this year that could develop down the road. numbers wise we are okay.

we just need to stay the course and recruit 4-5 olinemen every year.

  26. Bulla February 3, 2009 10:53 am

AC is a class act, and has never forgotten his roots. He was part of one of the best ever dynamic duo backcourt magicians….it was a pure joy to watch him play.

Belated condolences to Thompson ohana, she was a great leader and truly stood up for women’s sports….mahalo for all you did.

LOI day tomorrow, how exciting. i am playing delivery boy this evening with packets for players going to Weber State…….welcoming them to the Wildcat Ohana…..oh yeah!!!

    GO WARRIORS 😉
    GO WILDCATS 😎

  27. jeezy February 3, 2009 10:53 am

Stephen is Hawaii still in the hunt for Noel Grigsby??? With Powell gone, we need a solid slot or corner.

  28. al™ February 3, 2009 10:55 am

losing keliikipi hurts more i think because we were critically short on dtackles. he looks like he could be a player down the road.

  29. Bulla February 3, 2009 10:55 am

    ST

he is a quiet kid, that’s why i thought he was a slam dunk to stay home….i mean look at the cards……kind of caught me on the blind side when i read the info about his visit and all….

goes to prove you don’t know what you know, and what you do know you don’t really know….

    right?

  30. wayoutwest February 3, 2009 10:55 am

    Team 7 looks stacked.

  32. al™ February 3, 2009 10:57 am

  33. Ohana February 3, 2009 11:02 am

Hey stephen how about that big OT from the college of the desert that you said we still are fighting for and nobriga? Also heard on bobby curran this morning that we lost a verbal recruit to CAL,do you know who that was?

Let the fun begin, what a great way to get the team together.

I’m long past holding my breath for LOI day. Que sera sera, I’ll count what we have tomorrow night and I’m sure I will be happy. This is just the beginning.

Should we have a great season this year, it will be even better.

Colt will go down in Hawaii lore as one of the most beloved athletes ever.

  37. YpoWarrior February 3, 2009 11:39 am

ST, How’s Blaze doing with his leg injury?

  38. A-House February 3, 2009 11:45 am

    Hi Florida Ted:

I agree with you most heartedly about Colt and it’s because of his “heart”.

Something an average athlethe may have that will over come many obstacles.

  39. A-House February 3, 2009 11:47 am

Can any one remember losing so many verbal commits a day or two before LOI day?

Is 2009 going to be something very, very special?

  40. J-Dog February 3, 2009 11:50 am

Is Tyler Graunke getting a shot at UH’s pro day?

  41. Kazz February 3, 2009 11:51 am

    Stretch,

I dunno tho… Soares’ team is just called “Team 7”. This worries me as it seems as if they are focused and have not time to even think of a team name.

But what da hell is up with Team “Sex Appeal”? Dats kind of um… a… how do you say… “Precious” kind of persona huh?

  42. ewagirl808 February 3, 2009 11:57 am

  43. Committed Road Warrior February 3, 2009 12:02 pm

The insurance paperwork isn’t complete yet?

    ST, good neighbor:

Who was respopnsible to assigning players to teams? or, was it by “draft” by team captains?

  51. rage777 February 3, 2009 1:07 pm

I like the Ua Li Fwamz team.

I missed the blog about the circle of honor snubs. Besides Yuval, A.C., B.J., and Nani Cockett, I thought Melody Toth should be inducted as well. She did some miracles for the Vball team.

  52. Garret February 3, 2009 1:08 pm

Inoke isn’t a team captain? To me, that is the biggest surprise in the team list that ST posted.

  53. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:10 pm

    Big Wednesday tomorrow.

    Condolences to the Thompson family.

Kazz – The blessing ceremony was still going on when they wanted to do 7 on 7 drills… 😆

You play with the cards that is dealt, don’t hate the player, hate the dealer.

  54. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:15 pm

Teams #6 and #8 got some size, speed, and strength.

    Hi Esme!

H-bod – Where you stay? Need ride for Saturday? Let me know.

  55. A-House February 3, 2009 1:16 pm

    homey:

I hate the dealer who dealt me the junk poker cards.

Just like the shooter who craps out all the time – hey, that’s me – sorry to g’nalo and Stretch.

    Garret:

Maybe because he already graduated that’s why Inoke not a “team captain”?

  56. Just Saying February 3, 2009 1:16 pm

I wonder how they will determine when and who gets to use the field? The UH business clubs used to have a “bowl” game right before the turf got pulled out.

I would imagine the demand for use of the field will be a lot higher. Especially since there are soccer field lines too.

  57. Just Saying February 3, 2009 1:20 pm

when are they expected to begin/finish the other phases of the Ching Complex?

  58. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:21 pm

    A-House –

“You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin when the dealins done.” Kenny Rogers

  59. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:25 pm

It’s a good thing UH doesn’t have field polo or equestrian. Cleaning the horse manure from the turf would be the pits.

  60. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:27 pm

Every time I see “Ching Complex” I think of some type of emotional disorder that affects Chinese.

  61. Kazz February 3, 2009 1:28 pm

    Just Saying:

    February 3rd, 2009 at 1:16 pm

I would imagine the demand for use of the field will be a lot higher. Especially since there are soccer field lines too.

I believe the Wahine Soccer coach has a preference for natural turf.

Also, the actual complex will be done as soon as funds are available to match the Clarence TC Ching Foundation’s inital donation of 5 million. The last time I heard a “due date” is 2011. There remains a balance of about 4-4.5 million dollars to complete the entire complex in addition to the 5 million already donated.

I would be in favor of another fundraising event like the “Game On” one last year to assist with raising public funds for this, but the bulk will have to feasibly come from private funds and or the legislature again I think.

  62. Kazz February 3, 2009 1:30 pm

    Homey,

    Cat s*** and p*** on field turf can’t be good either… 👿

  63. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:30 pm

I guess Nobriga is still pondering? Just go with the heart. Where do you want to be for the next 4-5 years?

  64. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:32 pm

Kazz – Yup, those cats are going to see all those rubber pellets on the turf and think that is one humongous litter box.

  65. rog February 3, 2009 1:40 pm

I’m sure Nobriga has already decided he’s going to Colorado.

  66. kama krab February 3, 2009 1:40 pm

ST does UH have a DT that they have in their back pocket just in case Keli’ikipi does sign with the Quackers tommorow and has the coaching search started to fill the two coaching vacancies. Has any names come up yet.

  67. homey ℞ February 3, 2009 1:44 pm

Maybe if Leatigaga bulked up, he could help out on the DT side.

  68. A-House February 3, 2009 1:45 pm

So, anybody, what happened to the $1.5 million or was it $1.2 million that the legislature alloted for the renovation of Cooke Field? Can it be use to cover part of the $5 million matching funds?

Personal preference is to keep the name Cooke Field in the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex.

Like what happens if someone donates $35 million to the UH School of Business. Will they change the name from Schilder?

  69. A-House February 3, 2009 1:51 pm

    rog:

If Lilo has decided to go Colorado, why has he not called Coach Mack?

Until now, who would have thought that “contingency plans” are necessary for football recruiting? I’m sure the Coach Mack has a list of names for all the positions should anyone “bag out”. Just go down to the next one.

Maybe it’s not that simple. Coach Mack could give the scholarship to a very deserving player without a scholarship.

  70. A-House February 3, 2009 1:52 pm

When the Ching Field ground breaking was held, I talked to one of the attys for the Ching Foundation and asked him whether the Bolte donation (though he gets the income for his lifetime plus 10) would count as part of the matching fund and was told that it would count.

  74. rog February 3, 2009 2:00 pm

    A-house

I don’t understand why he needs to call Mack? He’s already come out and said he’s going to Colorado. If he comes that’s great but it sure doesn’t seem like it.

  75. TOM February 3, 2009 2:05 pm

You mean A.C. is not in the Circle of Honor?

Definitely something is wrong if he is eligible. Not only did he give blood, sweat, toil and tears for the UH basketball team, but he remembered UH with $$$ after he left.

    —————————————————————————-
If you’re in the minority owen-16, I’m with you. She said after all these things that happened at Ch. 2, she knew where she needed to be: at KGMB cause they know how to cover things correctly. Might be true, but you never want to publicly diss your former employer. It’s unprofessional, burning bridges and all that.
That said, I do believe that ever since Rick Blangiardi signed with KGMB, they’ve really stepped it up and are offering all kinds of good stuff, new sets, great specials, etc.

    Tom:

    Howzit?

If your friend’s donation can be counted, will that be “added” the the $1.2 million from the Legislature? Will the Ching Foundation accept this?

If so, then, if I can count, it makes it $3.4 million of the $5 million matching funds? If yes, then if every Hawaii resident can make a $1 donation, this will make up most if not all of the “short fall” cause I know some will not give, but others will give more tha $1. Can UHAD solicit funds direct to the general public? Have a contest?

  124. Garret February 3, 2009 3:27 pm

TCU’s head coach has a nice stat to point out that I don’t think many schools recruiting against him can match: female students outnumber male students 4 to 1 at their school! I can see how that stat might appeal to an 18-year-old who is choosing where he’s going to spend his college years…

Quarterback Casey Pachall has been at TCU for exactly four weeks, and he already has a pretty good idea. He likey.

“I love it,” he said. “Plenty of girls, that’s for sure.”

Of course, Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson may have mentioned that 4:1 ratio once or twice while recruiting Pachall. Smart coaches use anything and everything they have when trying to land what is widely considered one of the best QBs in the state and beyond. And this is not just a random recruiting ranking.

  125. Garret February 3, 2009 3:28 pm

    Kazz,

That is correct about the Bolte donation. He gets the interest from the money while he’s alive and UH gets the money after he passes away.

That is correct about the Bolte donation. He gets the interest from the money while he’s alive and UH gets the money after he passes away.

Earlier above, Tom Mui replied that he was informed that Mr. Bolte’s donation WOULD count towards the difference needed to complete the ENTIRE Clarence TC Ching Athletic Complex.

So… how does this work then? For example… If UH would only need three million more to complete what is needed and that happens over the next year or so, barring unfortunate circumstances that would cause Mr. Bolte’s donation to “go into effect” (i.e. passing away), where would the two million come from to make up the difference?

Actually you have two factors here. (1) Ching Foundation donates 5M and if Bolte is 2M, then UH has to raise 3M to match the 5M.

    (2) if UH spends 2M and needs 3M to complete what is needed in the next year, you would need to raise 5M over the next year. (Bolte 2M and outside 3M would make the Ching money available as we have matched the Ching donation.

I don’t know how the Ching Foundation has structured its gift. If the Foundation says that you can use all 5M but if you don’t match it, you have to return it, then you have to raise only 3 mil (Bolte + outside).

If Ching says you got to match it before you get it, then you have to raise 3M AND UH would have to spend its own 2M on what it has started.

(And to think I only came back to visit the Blog to see if any new surprises recruiting-wise has cropped up!)

    Food for thought.

How much does it cost to run the Stan Sherriff’s Center for men’s volleyball and women’s basketball? Cost of electricity and the staffing and maintenance cost must be a losing proposition? If it is, maybe these sports should be held in a smaller arena or gym and make it a more cosey experience for these teams. Back to the sauna of Klum Gym type atmosphere, ofcourse an upgraded model. If the cost is not negative forget all that is said. Thank you.

I obviously am NOT Jim Donovan, but he has responded to a questions about moving the sports that draw smaller crowds into smaller venues to save on cost.

NOT to quote JD, but I believe his explaination in NOT doing this and keeping those events at the Stanley is so that those programs do not “de-value” themselves in terms of providing proper facilities for fans to enjoy the game.

Having the Wahine basketball team or the Warrior volleyball team play in a small gym with uncomfortable seating, no AC, minimal bathroom facilites, etc does not provide much of a materialistic value to those programs, thus bring down the image and the fan morale/experience/atmosphere.

It is JD’s hope that lower ticket prices along with better on-court performances PLUS a good facility to play in = long term success.

(I hope I did some justice to Jim Donovan’s previous explaination in previous radio and internet interviews.)

  166. Kazz February 3, 2009 6:12 pm

    “Not An Expert”,

Also, you’d be hard pressed to move the Wahine Basketball team’s home games to a “lesser” facility than the men’s due to Title 9.

Besides… as a fan. There is no way I’d pay the current ticket prices to sit on the floor of Klum Gym or sit on a hard bleacher in Gym 2 to watch a game for any sport and I am sure A LOT fans will feel that way.

no worry tsaikos, didn’t coach mc win the top recruiter award in the big 12 while he was at tt. he has been thru this, so am not worried and he said he would like to save 1 or 2 scholies for late talent after feb 4th. the fallouts or transfers at other schools will start after feb 5th. like was previously posted, the better players are not going to go to a school where they going sit on the bench, so i look at the “free agent” market to be very good after feb 5th.

plenty big time schools have or will have decommission recruits. it is happening at lots of schools. right now the east coast schools are checking their fax machines and double checking on “sitting on the fence” recruits.

    Evening folks,

UH should have Colt and Devone visit all the HS seniors that are “on the fence” and or just recently de-committed….that might be useful…of course, all in secret =)

I mean, we do not want to be seen in the same light as some coaches in the Pac-10….

  189. whitey February 3, 2009 7:55 pm

no worry about decommission players, best wishes and hope you do well at the school of your choice. if you watch the us army commercial about what they do, how they feel, caring about their comrades, and get plenty of warrior pride, that is what our warriors need to do.

Ok, so 2008 recruiting is almost PAU…

Now its the time for US, WARRIOR fans to lay the ground work for the future.

    If you know them

    If you know their family

If you when grad from their H.S.

    If you know their coaches

Make sure that the Hawai`i players on this list understand what is in their best interests:

    http://recruiting.scout.com/3/2010_fb_Northwest_100.html

If you feel that this is not the right thing to do, then so be it, but think what happens all over the other 49 states…how many fans and family members are doing this exact same thing.

  207. NorthShoreFan February 3, 2009 8:34 pm

Yup, Scouts got Wade as going to the Ducks. Committed 2/2/09. Bloodline to UH broken?
One big guy from Kapolei listed as “soft commit”. Will he pop up at UH?
We could use on big 6’6″ guy on the O line!
Hurry up tomorrow get here already! No can wait, no can sleep tonight.

  208. Mei Ling February 3, 2009 8:44 pm

Belated condolences to Dr. Thompson’s ‘ohana.

In the end, it would be nice for UH to get the biggest & the bestest & da hommies, but I’d rather see the students get the best deal they can both in the football arena, academically & be happy. And as someone else pointed out, if the Hawaii players get home-sick, they will come home. The Warriors will build a team with heart.

It’ll be an interesting day tomorrow. Anyone going to Murphy’s?

  209. whitey February 3, 2009 8:47 pm

ok, fast fingers byuntae will continue break. got trading stamps and a penny for trading purposes. xxfaith, hopefully next time come to big city w/tsaikos, will bring you special prize. no ask what because not going know till i leave. hahahahaaaah. ta ta.

Article listing goals for the Dolphin players mentions several Warriors.

General Manager Jeff Ireland– Last year he found two undrafted gems in Davone Bess and Dan Carpenter. This year find three.

Center Samson Satele – To get stronger in 2009, which would allow him to become a better drive blocker, or pulling guard.

Receiver Davone Bess- To play with the same hunger that drove him to silence all those who doubted this undrafted rookie in 2008.

  211. Garret February 3, 2009 8:57 pm

Article about how the heights/weights/speeds listed for recruits on recruiting websites often vary significantly.

Mansfield Timberview running back Eric Stephens — the No. 36-rated recruit on the Fabulous 55 — is 5-11, 200 pounds and has 4.38 speed on texasfootball.com. On Rivals.com, the Texas Tech-bound Stephens is 5-8 (three inches shorter), 177 pounds (nearly 25 pounds lighter) and, according to the site’s analysis, “doesn’t have home run speed.”

“I don’t know where some of these guys get their numbers from,” Cron said. “It seems like they heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy, and that’s good enough to report.”

“People lie,” said Gerry Hamilton of Burntorangebeat.com, Scout.com’s Texas site. “You’ve got high school coaches who are trying to help their kids. You’ve got kids trying to add an inch or 10 pounds.

“I would say I get wrong or inaccurate information 60 to 70 percent of the time. You hear one thing, and then when you’re standing next to the prospect, you can see it’s not true.”

His receiver, A.J. Dugat, is headed to the University of Houston and got plenty of attention from college coaches — though it seems they didn’t always know about the player they were asking about.

“They listed my receiver anywhere from 5-7 to 6-2 … 6-2!” Stewart said. “I know that he’s 5-10 and weighs 191 pounds. If we had as many 4.3 people as they say we have, we would have been state champions every year. I’ll tell you this, I don’t put less than 4.6 on many players, because you don’t find many players who can run that fast.

“But you see 4.4 all over the place. It’s good for newspapers. It’s good for recruiting sites. It’s good for fans. It’s just not good if you’re looking for facts.”

NLI day is so big in the news now that the *NFL Network* is covering it! The NFL network is covering high school students and their college choices…the NFL network?

NFL Network features a look at the next class of college football freshmen with the National Signing Day Show on Wednesday, February 4 at 8 PM ET on NFL Network.

Host Paul Burmeister and Director of Scouting for Scout.com, Scott Kennedy, will delve into the new freshmen class, where the top high school football prospects will be going to college and how the new players will affect the 2009 college football season.

Article about how UCLA was able to get recruits that had committed to USC, Notre Dame, etc.

Over the span of a month, the prized defensive back was among four recruits UCLA managed to flip its way. Billy Sanders, a tight end and defensive end from Idaho, changed from Miami; Taniela Maka, a linebacker from Long Beach Jordan, switched over from Arizona.

The coup de grace, though, was Carson tight end Morrell Presley, who initially committed to USC, then enrolled at UCLA. That seemed an indication that while the college football monopoly in Los Angeles is still far from over, there is a game afoot.

“Think about it, when was the last time UCLA ever pick-pocketed USC?” said Rick Kimbrel, western recruiting analyst for Rivals.com. “That hasn’t happened in quite some time.

Two prominent recruiting websites rate the Bruins’ projected class among the nation’s top 20. And it’s a group that addresses immediate needs on the offensive line, with community college transfers Shawn Johnson (College of the Canyons), Ryan Taylor (Tyler, Texas) and Eddie Williams (Mt. San Antonio).

But it is the head-to-head battles the Bruins are winning against other schools that is a sign of change from the more passive recruiting days under Dorrell, Kimbrel said.

“Recruits have told me that once they committed to another school, UCLA stopped recruiting them,” Kimbrel said of the former staff. “This staff is persistent.”

There’s also hope that Stanley Hasiak, a lineman from Hawaii’s Kapolei High who changed his commitment in the opposite direction — from UCLA to California — might reverse course after a visit from Bruins offensive coordinator Norm Chow, a Hawaii native.

  214. Garret February 3, 2009 9:02 pm

ESPN asked Manti to not reveal his choice of school until they could televise it tomorrow.

And the Bruins are still believed in the running for Manti Te’o, a Honolulu Punahou linebacker considered so good that ESPN asked him to hold off announcing his choice until today so the network can televise it.

  215. Garret February 3, 2009 9:05 pm

UCLA actually has a good strategy to counter other schools trying to poach their commits…after saying this to their recruits, the recruit will think twice if someone puts down UCLA. I’m sure that UCLA puts down all the schools that other recruits are committed too, and I wonder if UH says something similar to their commits.

As for other schools trying to poach UCLA recruits, Neuheisel said, “We have zero fear. But we tell them, ‘If they’re talking about their own school, pay close attention, but if they start talking about us, you got to start asking yourself, why?’ “

We discussed TCU’s 4-1 female-male ratio earlier today. Bryn Mawr has 1300 female students and *1* male student! This guy dated one of the Bryn Mawr women last year and I’m sure he gets a lot of attention from the other students…everyone on campus must know who he is.

Continuing the 2-for-1 recruit discussion we were having the other day…

Utah is interviewing Xavier Su`a-Filo’s high school coach for an assistant coach position. Although Su`a-Filo is supposed to announce his decision tomorrow, he may delay the decision (to see if Utah actually hires his coach).

  224. momotaro February 3, 2009 9:56 pm

If you think that UH had a bad day with decommits, USC lost the #1 LB in the nation to Arizona State.

I suppose if they get Te`o like everyone expects then everything will be all right.

Lopati turning into Perry II. So whos going to give BEAVER Cav a hug and buy him a beer the next time and say how much we miss him the he shows up here to poach FB players?? In fact, he ONLY comes back to do just that….never just too chill and re-trace his roots huh?

  227. momotaro February 3, 2009 10:11 pm

Great news about Masch. I got the impression that UCLA wasn’t interested in him unless Branden Warner decommitted:

Is UCLA interested in JC DT Zach Masch? An interview I read seemed to indicate that he is really interested in UCLA.

Not really. UCLA has shown him interest, and if Warner falls through UCLA may re-visit him, but at this point my sources don’t see it happening.

  228. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 10:15 pm

    Keli‘ikipi: “Personal issues”?

Cannot be grades I suppose ‘cuz hes pretty good there, so it must be he wants to get away from parents? or bro wes neva like him come to UHM, IMHO….to me UH and the FB coaches never support him enough when he got into legal troubles…..

    Anxious moments…

  237. glenn February 3, 2009 10:30 pm

I say Lopati is gone too. Just a hunch based on the decommit trends over the last two weeks.

  238. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 10:32 pm

One phone call, text, and or fax per week…something like that during the dead period.

  239. lava February 3, 2009 10:35 pm

Chad Lopati’s quote this summer re UH:

“I love Hawaii,” Chad Lopati said. “I grew up following them. I love all the Polynesian guys they have and I’ve always dreamed of going there. The program there is really good and it’s only like 15 minutes away. I’ve been to a bunch of games there and I go to their practices a lot too. I’m real familiar with everyone there. I like the new Hawaii coaches too. It’s not too much of a change…”

The Poly guys are still here Chad, and your dream will come true if you keep your commitment to UH. You know we need you and the impact you would have. Don’t let a phone call on the eve of LOI day come between you and your dream to be a Warrior and represent the State of Hawaii.

  240. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2009 10:35 pm

    XXFaith:
UH is totally stunned by Lopati’s interest in Oregon State. He was considered to be a lock.

  241. jeezy February 3, 2009 10:39 pm

Why doesnt Hawaii just make a late push for C Hunter Blackmore already or DT Hunter Thomson? With de commits from Wade K and Pierce Burton, Blackmore is a all state center from Washington who showed interest in us and only offer to Pennsylvania. He can still get bigger and be a solid Center for us. We have no other high school DT so we might as well go after thomson who is going to Weber

  242. lava February 3, 2009 10:40 pm

I guess there is no such thing as a lock anymore.

  243. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 10:41 pm

ST: I’m stunned too! I’m telling ya dude, DO NOT let the foxes into the hen house. Every coach is USing our Aloha spirit to OUR disadvantage. Everyone says we should aloha this aloha that, its good for them to go to the mainland to grow up, its academic. Well, if they playing FB, its not. Mainland coaches are using that local mentality AGAINST us. Like come on, this blog is titled WARRIOR BEAT, not Scholastic BEAT.

  244. lava February 3, 2009 10:43 pm

Jeezy, I think UH would look elsewhere if they wanted to fill those positions. UH is very familiar with those guys, so if the interest was there you can bet the coaches would have kept their “foot in the door,” especially re Hunter.

  245. glenn February 3, 2009 10:44 pm

Pierce Burton decommitted. Where is he going to?

  246. blahblah February 3, 2009 10:49 pm

Hawaii fans must do all they can to prevent this from happening in the future!!! If a mainland coach asks you for directions, send him the opposite way!!! fans that work at rental car places, give em the most junk car on the lot that will guarantee have problems! lets compile a list to see what we can do!

  247. jeezy February 3, 2009 10:51 pm

True. I just dont know who else we have in mind with all these possible de commits. If we lose Lopati, I will really consider this recruiting class a failure and Mack might have to re think his recruiting strategies. I dont know how because i like the early recruiting. Im just as frustrated as every UH fan right now.

  248. lava February 3, 2009 10:55 pm

“Lets compile a list to see what we can do!”

You mean like when a mainland coach opens the door to his junk rental car to meet with a local recruit one of us is there with a dog to run over and pee on the guy’s shoes. And another one of us dresses up as the recruit and says we’ve lost interest and he can get right back in his car and go back where he came from. That kind of list?

  249. jeezy February 3, 2009 10:55 pm

blahblah, Hawaiian airlines and local hotels can help us too to lose their bags and mess up their wake up calls. HPD can help us pull these coaches over on the H1 as well.. statewide effort

  250. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 10:56 pm

glenn: Re: Burton —> SJSU, Tomey’s team

  251. lava February 3, 2009 10:57 pm

This recruiting class will be good regardless of which final snowflakes melt in tomorrow’s sun.

  252. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 10:58 pm

I used to work at the major waikiki hotel…only one of this “brand” in Oahu……….dealt with coaches and teams there…believe me…I tried =D

  253. blahblah February 3, 2009 11:01 pm

lava and jeezy: great start, statewide effort indeed! but remember, these strategies must be used ONLY if the recruit has already committed to Hawaii. If a recruit decides to commit to a mainland school, it would be very selfish of us to prevent this form happenening.

I LOVE the HPD one. Can you imagine going on espn.com one morning and seeing the headline: “OSU recruiter busted for DUI and speeding in Hawaii.”

  254. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 11:02 pm

  257. Justin February 3, 2009 11:04 pm

IMO, OSU is showing a total lack of respect by trying to poach a kid so close to signing day. Total lack of integrity and morals. Mike Cav is a fat little hobbit, i thought he was a man of class and someone who respected the state.

  258. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 11:05 pm

BTW, yes, I am very emotional and a die-hard UHM/Warrior alum/fan…and yes, if you sit next to me at a FB game, I might spill some beer on you. Thank you.

  259. lava February 3, 2009 11:09 pm

Maybe we should avoid scheduling these teams that eagerly pursue at the last minute our recruits.

  260. el guapo February 3, 2009 11:10 pm

    Justin,

    That’s insulting to the hobbit

  261. glenn February 3, 2009 11:13 pm

This was the first time Hawaii tried to recruit like most schools do. One positive sign is that the coaches are able to identify talent. Many of the players who are decommitting were initially not being recruited by BCS schools. Only during the course of the season, other schools jumped in. Hopefully the coaching staff took notes on what worked and what didn’t work. For next year, Hawaii needs to finish strong. Maybe instead of offering a multitude of scholarships, the coaches can offer less scholarships to help them focus on the ones they really want. In some ways, giving away too many offers may have hurt Hawaii this year. All this being said, we need to give the coaching staff props for uncovering new recruiting territory and for going about it aggressively.

  262. bstunna2002 February 3, 2009 11:23 pm

sad about Lopati possibly decommiting I hope he stays true to his word though and plays for the home team. UH couldn’t have been to surprised I am not even a reporter and I knew the scoop on Lopati a few weeks back. Hope they can still lock him down though would be a force for years to come.

  263. koakane± February 3, 2009 11:27 pm

  265. al ™ February 3, 2009 11:33 pm

this is like staying up for election day results. albeit with a lot more surprises.

how about something to brighten the spirit?

  266. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 11:37 pm

    glenn #262:

Interesting and I agree with what you have said. The real problem, if you will, is that the local mentality is to look at ANY college on the mainland as better than UHM. It does not come from the kids themselves, but the parents, grandparents, uncles, aunties, etc. PLANTATION mentality. Until that stops, you will continue to see a Athletic drain as well as the “from before time” Brain drain.

While there is some merit to that mentality, how can Hawai`i counter that?

Some may say that the kids here need the experience off getting off the rock. Well, once they graduate from college, can’t they still move some where else to live and work right? Or, there are more experienced educators there. Well, if the best would stay and build up the departments here, challenge the teachers, colleges, etc. to make them better, why would they have to leave?

Anyway, going off on tangents and stuff….when I was at UHM and HCC on the big island, we used to always have these kinds of debates and the only idea we could come up with to ensure that Hawai`i prospers, was to keep the best here. Be it in the Academic field or Athletic field. It starts with the people…until they change, it will be the same old same old….but thats how we like it here in Hawai`i.

  267. whitey February 3, 2009 11:38 pm

ok, back and i see ST up to his usual self of giving us a little bit here and a little bit there. there is an old saying that us old futs understand, all you need is a man’s word and a handshake and you are family. someday when these recruits who commited, then decommited will get older then realize that your word and handshake is worth more than you think. it is priceless!! by then, they will realize that people who are born and raised in hawaii don’t kick their friends in the arse and expect them to be stupid. right now, we may look stupid for thinking that these recruits would be a warrior, but beware of stupidity because it can bite your arse.

  268. koakane± February 3, 2009 11:39 pm

kden hasta manyana hemo da pajama e lei ka lei lei ………going sleep now so can see how the recruitment turning out tomorrow..

sleep tight and last one up turn out the lights.

  269. koakane± February 3, 2009 11:41 pm

al ™: how about something to brighten the spirit?

mahalo plenty al but nuff drinking for me today. nite nite

  270. XxFaithxX February 3, 2009 11:42 pm

    dammit, time to go sleep……………

    latas.

  271. whitey February 3, 2009 11:44 pm

i think koakane’s rating of this year’s recruits is way off. there are players who will fill the immediate needs and those who will be developed for 2010. i think our returning players are way better than what we had in 2008 and this class will be special. my personal rating without seeing the loi is B+ to A-

  272. al ™ February 3, 2009 11:48 pm

lava….but we are stuck with sjsu.

  273. whitey February 3, 2009 11:48 pm

like i said previously, if these decommits don’t want to be a warrior, that is no problem. we wish you the best and hope things work out for you

  274. whitey February 3, 2009 11:51 pm

last thing about decommits, i hope that the school of your choice does not renege and tell you that they have no scholie for you. that my friend can happen and will happen tomorrow.

  275. al ™ February 3, 2009 11:52 pm

the funny thing about nobriga is that here’s the ex-local boy being discouraged to come home by his ex-local boy father and he was, oh yah, recruited by an ex-local boy coach at colorado.

yah, there’s a difference in a local boy and an ex-local boy.

i guess you would call the ones leaving ex’s too?

  276. whitey February 3, 2009 11:52 pm

ok, wonder if can beat ST before he posts his new blog to 300

  277. whitey February 3, 2009 11:55 pm

al, no get excited about nobriga. his family decided and he going find out he is just another player at CU who nobody will remember once he leaves there. in fact, we not going know either. hahahahhaaaa

  278. whitey February 3, 2009 11:56 pm

in fact, come spring practice, who will remember the de-commits????

  279. whitey February 3, 2009 11:58 pm

in fact, we can go into the future, who you?????

  280. whitey February 4, 2009 12:00 am

wonder where bhf2, pride, and kekoa. that’s the late night crew, but they all must have gone to bed early, so they can see all the good news in the morning.

  281. whitey February 4, 2009 12:01 am

guess got to put the load on my back and see if can reach 300

  283. glenn February 4, 2009 12:03 am

Awesome to see the passion for Warrior football on this blog! In 2009 just as we did in 2007, we all need to BELIEVE! Let us all help Hawaii “will” its way to a great season…wins and more wins help with recruiting… we would probably have won some of these recruiting battles had the season been more successful. Maybe next year will be a different story.

  284. whitey February 4, 2009 12:04 am

  286. whitey February 4, 2009 12:07 am

morning glenn. you are right about last season, but this year going be different cause we going kick some arses (including BSU)

  287. whitey February 4, 2009 12:08 am

    morning el gaupo. thanks braddah

  288. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:09 am

    shiro

i am more concerned that the nobriga boy may sign on to a school where his heart may not be in it.

that to me is the sad thing.

  289. whitey February 4, 2009 12:09 am

braddah al, i know you stay there, but waiting to jump on the new post.

  290. el guapo February 4, 2009 12:11 am

Manti is front and center on ESPN college football site

    how’s things on Maui?

  291. whitey February 4, 2009 12:12 am

al, that’s why they say que sera sera.

  292. whitey February 4, 2009 12:14 am

everything has slowed down on maui, but the gd gas stations they are putting the screws to us. cheapest gas is 2.47

  293. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:15 am

    well, no complain.

in the past, we went after kids that no one knew about. therefore, no such thing as a decommit.

now we have set our sights on higher heights. some of the pitfalls is that some early commit will fall out of the tree. thats the way it is.

main thing these guys who will sign tomw to be a warrior are the ones who wanted to be one.

  294. TOM February 4, 2009 12:16 am

AL actually is up waiting to be numero uno if ST ever gets around to giving us the LOI that were faxed in at midnight!

  295. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:16 am

    gas is below two dollars.

  296. whitey February 4, 2009 12:18 am

al, you got a good recipe for sanbanzaki (spp), pickled daikon, shoyu style

  297. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:19 am

    tom

i no worry about being number one. i am going to miss most of the early fun tomw. i actually have a job.

  298. el guapo February 4, 2009 12:19 am

The lack of honor is disturbing. Sports is a good reflection of a person’s character. People who don’t keep their word, like not showing up for a game or for a tee time, are usually the same way in other aspects of their lives.

  299. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:19 am

    300

  300. whitey February 4, 2009 12:20 am

TOM, long time no see. when you going grace us with your presence here on maui??????

  301. el guapo February 4, 2009 12:20 am

    Goodnight everyone

  302. TOM February 4, 2009 12:20 am

Just checking again WHITEY to see if we got to 300!

  303. whitey February 4, 2009 12:21 am

congratulations gang, you have accomplished another goal for tonight and ST will be putting up his new post with good news.

  304. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:22 am

    whitey…

i make a good sengiri daikon. i guess it is the cousin of sanbaizuke. that the one with the shredded daikon and konbu. i’ll make you some next trip over.

actually goes well with miller lite.

  305. TOM February 4, 2009 12:23 am

WHITEY: when I am on Maui, you are either endangering the birds in South Dakota or taking out too many salmon in Alaska. Can you really see Russia from Juneau? 🙂

  306. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:23 am

    i like george daily-lyles.

he is going to be just like sol elimimian and he is a man of conviction.

  307. whitey February 4, 2009 12:24 am

ok, this is feb 4th, we need an inside scoop if any loi came into the coach’s office. who was the first recruit to send in one. my prediction is the wr from oklahoma city, ds.

  308. whitey February 4, 2009 12:28 am

TOM, wrong part of alaska. if you like see russia, then you got to go to attu, one of the islands in the aleutian chain. actually, even then no can see, but when frozen get chance to take snowmobile and try to cross the bering sea.

  309. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:28 am

with the five jc guys already in school, this is already a great class.

so who do you think is the laie person of three stars that is 80% leaning our way?

immediately who comes to mind is jray galeai. but, got some punahou kids who live out there too. a few more kahuku kids. isn’t waialua north shore? oh wait, he specifically did mention laie.

  310. whitey February 4, 2009 12:30 am

imho, ST will not be posting anything till 9:00 am cause he needs to confirm all the loi with coach mc. but then again, he could post something and keep adding on.

  311. whitey February 4, 2009 12:34 am

my 2 sense, bellamy from butte

  312. al ™ February 4, 2009 12:35 am

okay…..gotta do something be back later. and no i won’t be visiting the toilet.

    ahahaa.

  313. whitey February 4, 2009 12:36 am

al, you right, we get one excellent bunch of recruits. they can fill some immediate needs and we can develop the rest for 2010 and beyond. our weak position, rb, is going to be one of our strength this year.

  314. Pete Jek February 4, 2009 12:44 am

Just testing how fast I could post from my iPod touch. Hoping for commits with great talent and loyalty to UH. Even if all the rumors about decommits are true, this year’s class will still be decent. Good luck to UH. Already looking forward to the upcoming season.

  315. whitey February 4, 2009 12:52 am

morning Pete. your post was in record time

  316. whitey February 4, 2009 12:53 am

ok, sounds good. i going talk to duffer and see what he wants to do. i will let you know and if you can get seats near or next to you at the same time. doesn’t mean we going come to all the games, but we can give it to your friends or we can donate it as prize for each game that we don’t attend.

  325. wafan February 4, 2009 4:15 am

An exciting, successful recruit-full LOI day everyone!

  326. wafan February 4, 2009 4:19 am

Welcome to each of our new Warriors!!! Whoo-hoo!

And to those who chose not to keep their word — good luck. Hopefully you will learn that your word is really the only thing that matters.

But, I do not believe you will ever learn that from that scum-bucket Neuheisel.

  327. addahknowjoe February 4, 2009 4:39 am

Nobriga’s alleged reason to choose Colorado is a bit weak with me. The opposite could have easily been said had he chosen Hawaii: “UH and Colorado play three times in the next four years.”

The success Dizon managed to carve out of Colorado obviously played a huge roll in steering Nobri’s foreseeable future. That’s tottally cool.

I’d hate to have the braddah moping all over Manoa campus heartless and distraught.

The best to Liloa. Represent! Make your family and all of us proud!

  328. 808ike February 4, 2009 4:48 am

Good morning everyone!! A very special day, today. Good luck to

Rise and shine campers, it’s LOI day.

Jray, Chad, Wade, we need you guys.

  330. lava February 4, 2009 6:04 am

Nobriga doesn’t represent Hawaii. He made his bed, and now he and pops sleep in it. There allegiance is elsewhere. He represents Colorado, the hell with that, the book is closed.

  331. d1島 February 4, 2009 6:19 am

    Great Morning All!

Best of luck to all the local boys (and girls?) who make their decisions this morning. Wherever the opportunity leads you, take full advantage of it. It’s not something that is available to the vast majority of your peers and to squander it would be truly shameful.

Almost time for the HA feed…who’s running the camera?

  332. Stretch February 4, 2009 6:26 am

It’s time to see who steps up!!

  333. Bulla February 4, 2009 6:30 am

good luck to all the student athletes today who have been blessed with the privilege of continuing along their educational path by the wheels of their athletic abilities. it is truly an honor to be in the position of signing a Letter of Intent.

Welcome to all of our new Warriors, you are part of something bigger than you’ll ever realize until you no longer wear the green and black jersey on the battlefield.

To all of our native sons and daughters who will be leaving ‘home’ to begin a new chapter in their lives, good luck, God Bless and God Speed. remember, this is only a new chapter in your book, the story began, and it will end right here, home…..in Hawaii nei. Do not forget your roots, your ohana, your friends, everything that makes you who you are today…….come back to help others forge ahead with their goals and ambitions. Represent, and make all of Hawaii proud!

    IMUA LANAKILA 🙂

Good Morning All! Well today is the day we see what the future holds for the Warrior Nation. Today is the day I get excited about recruits.

d1, the feed looked good from here in Spokane!

  338. Kekoa (iPhone) February 4, 2009 6:44 am

KHON attempting a ‘live’ feed of the LOI signing. So far they’ve fumbled the kick off. bbl…

  339. Bulla February 4, 2009 6:45 am

    lava

i agree with you, weak is a very politically correct description….some of my friends on the Wessai would say ‘broke di–‘ (please fill in the blanks)

the whole reason he went to LV was to get more exposure, and there is no way his dad (if you know his dad) would allow him to come to UH. it was more of a feather in the cap deal than anything else, and that is sad.

i hope UH has a few backup plans…..

  340. Bulla February 4, 2009 6:53 am

great having the soccer girls there to represent……

  341. Bulla February 4, 2009 6:56 am

  344. djmitcho February 4, 2009 7:01 am

So it sounds like Lopati is choosing UH, unless he signs with the beavers undercover

  345. COPO February 4, 2009 7:08 am

Recruiting “life blood” of a program, have a plan-work your plan, have a great recruiter as head coach-more importantly-head coach must hire “assistants who are great recruiters (hustler’s).”

  346. Bulla February 4, 2009 7:10 am

    Stretch,

    wildcats in the house
