Graves gets the call

• Quarterback David Graves has been summoned as the injury replacement for Spencer Smith, who suffered a fractured right forearm in Saturday’s 31-28 victory over Army. Graves is scheduled to leave tonight on the red-eye flight, arriving tomorrow in Las Vegas, where the Warriors will train through Friday in preparation for Saturday’s road game against Colorado.

Graves has been told he will be used as a safety. He was a slotback/cornerback through his junior year of high school. “Any way I can help the team, I’ll do it,” Graves said.

Vegas?

The reasoning is that unless you’re in high altitude for a long period — two weeks? — that there is a diminishing results training in Colorado’s thin air for a few days. Or so the Warriors were told.

Thus, Vegas is a viable option for the Warriors (inexpensive, centrally located, good facilities) and a preferred option for reporters.

I’m old. And blind. Today’s mistakes: Pollard caught a 31-yard pass. Max Jenkins fumbled. Green’s TD run was 3 yards. OK, I’m putting myself in timeout now.

  13. Stephen Tsai September 12, 2010 10:15 am

Not much consolation, but Smith’s parents were both at the game. Mom was originally from New York. Father, I believe, was raised in Europe. So they got to see him play. Hopefully, this wasn’t his last game.

Why not move Aaron Brown back to safety and promote one of the other players to MLB..?

As for the extra roster spot… where do we need most help/support? I want more defensive bodies in this one.

  19. CoolEthan September 12, 2010 10:28 am

Who told them about this altitude situation? Never heard this one before.

Should of been staying at Colorado Springs, saying howdy to Air Force, Olympic Training facility, touring the Garden of the Gods, and getting used to the dry air.

  20. Michigan Warrior September 12, 2010 10:29 am

I also wouldn’t mind seeing Graves come in to run the option in certain situations.

The agenda for the next Board of Regents meeting is out. http://www.hawaii.edu/offices/bor/regular/notice/20100916.regular.pdf

Check out Item VI #9. Also, I wonder what the implications will be for student athletes if #10 & #11 are approved?

    WassupDoc,

Wow, thank you for posting that! None of those items would be good for the UH Athletic Department. Cutting the two majors is not a positive thing, but it probably is being done due to budget cuts. Taking a football-only position and making it be for football and both basketball teams (where normally there would be different people hired for each team at other schools) is basically a permanent loss of support for the programs.

  22. papajoe2 September 12, 2010 10:30 am

ST #6, window seats and claustrophobic. Roll down the window!

  23. Garret September 12, 2010 10:32 am

The quotes for the UH-Army game are up. The Star-Advertiser really had great coverage–I think that more articles with quotes are included when UH plays an early game and reporters aren’t rushing to meet their deadline.

  24. Michigan Warrior September 12, 2010 10:34 am

Fo’ real on the altitude stuff? Don’t people spend time training to climb mountains before actually climbing mountains? Or don’t we have to worry because everyone will have their own oxygen tanks?

  25. Garret September 12, 2010 10:35 am

Article that discusses how UC-Davis and Cal Poly didn’t have the money to move up to D-IAA right now.

The decision by Big West members Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Davis to join the Big Sky for football makes perfect sense for both schools.

They will still remain in the Big West for other sports, which makes sense logistically since every opponent is a bus trip away as opposed to a flight.

The economy makes the prospect of either school moving to Division I for football difficult. Both would have to expand their stadiums (both plan to, but when money is more readily available), and the Western Athletic Conference hardly seems like a destination considering its future losses (Fresno State, Boise State, Nevada) will reduce it to six low-wattage teams in six states.

  26. Garret September 12, 2010 10:35 am

The article mentions UH of course.

Hawaii may follow BYU’s path and become an independent for football. Then Hawaii may seek membership in the Big West, which is much more cost-effective travel-wise than those road trips to New Mexico State, Idaho and Louisiana Tech.

  27. Shoko September 12, 2010 10:36 am

I’m sure Colorado will be favored, but I really do think the Warriors can win next weeks game even if the Buffs plays at home. Their rushing game is questionable and their passing game is not as explosive as the Warriors. Colorado hasn’t shown me to have a potent offense and capable of putting up some big numbers. Anyway, thats just my opinion.

On another note: Does ST might have a gambling problem? 😉 In any case, just stick with poker and remember to fold that 7-2 offsuit unless you have position. Probably a good idea that DR is on reconnaissance in Colorado. He’ll probably push all in with that 7-2 off.

  28. Garret September 12, 2010 10:37 am

Nevada’s AD specifically cites travel costs to Hawaii for nonrevenue sports as a reason they wanted to leave the WAC.

More specifically, she pointed to the MWC’s four NCAA men’s basketball bids and more overall postseason opportunities. Plus, the tighter MWC footprint is easier to get around.

“Everyone loves to go to Hawaii,” she said of the WAC school, “but it’s very expensive. It kills Olympic sports.”

  29. Slugger September 12, 2010 10:37 am

    ST ~

    Pace yourself in LV…

Hope the defense gets it worked out. Healing prayers for Spencer.

To me, it looked like Mana Silva came up with the fumbled ball when Max Jenkins lost it, not Aaron Brown, as DR’s article says. Gotta look at the game tape again… Glad to see that Aaron was in the game and did good, though.

  30. papajoe2 September 12, 2010 10:38 am

Wie tied for 1st with Yani Tseng at -11 after 14. We’ll see if she matured enough not to pressure out.

  31. Shoko September 12, 2010 10:40 am

The funny thing with altitude, and this is just my opinion, I usually run about 5 miles every other day at home. However, when I travel to a location that has a higher elevation, I get winded alot faster and might have to slow my pace or start walking to recover. Yet, my recoup time is minimal and I my time in running 5 miles is off by no more than a minute and a half. But then again, thats just me.

  32. Garret September 12, 2010 10:40 am

Colorado will probably be favored…but they are a bad team playing for a coach that everybody expects will be fired. UH will have a good chance in that situation. Just like how Army hadn’t had a winning season for 14 years and lost a QB and SB/RB to injury, UH needs to take advantage of the situation and steal a win on the road. UH has its own injuries of course, with Smith being the latest.

  33. Garret September 12, 2010 10:44 am

Article about two former UH coaches who now coach for Oregon State and have sons playing for Corvallis High. I wonder if UH would be interested in either of those recruits?

Mike Cavanaugh and OSU defensive line coach Joe Seumalo both have sons who play for CHS. Joe’s son Isaac plays offensive and defensive line for the Spartans.

That doesn’t mean that Seumalo and Cavanaugh never talk football with their sons. They’ve been teaching Isaac and Blair the sport since they were little.

The coaches were at University of Hawaii before making the move to OSU and they spent some time developing their sons’ skills.

Isaac has the benefit of having a built-in coach for both sides of the line. His dad coached him on defensive line techniques and Cavanaugh with offensive line skills.

  34. papajoe2 September 12, 2010 10:49 am

I think, with Colorado’s coach ready to be fired, they will change everything and anything, not necessarily a whole new offense and defense, but maybe schemes on O and D. Coach has nothing to lose as he is practically out the door. They probably will change up some of the starters too, maybe letting his freshmen recruits play, just to shake things up. By not red shirting some of the incoming recruits, if they win, it is worth it. If they lose, then its in incoming coach’s problem.

  35. Shoko September 12, 2010 10:52 am

I sort of wonder if they will give Dan Hawkins one year in the PAC-12. If things don’t improve, he’s probably good as gone.

  36. Garret September 12, 2010 10:57 am

I just saw that the early Vegas line had Colorado favored by 11…I think that is crazy. I’m also glad that UH is playing at Colorado instead of at Cal…

  37. Slugger September 12, 2010 10:57 am

I don’t think they should fly Graves in; he’s been used as the scout team QB. They need guys on defense. Maybe Tonga since he has a year on Bubba in the game, but I think Bubba may be faster.

    Pomai,

Lametrius had a good season last year. Don’t know why this season he’s not coming up with the kinds of plays he had last year. He has great height for a cornerback.

  38. Slugger September 12, 2010 10:59 am

    Pomai,

On LD: Maybe it’s cuz we haven’t seen teams that pass a lot… gotta wait and see how Lametrius does.

  39. Garret September 12, 2010 10:59 am

    Shoko,

I doubt that Hawkins will be coaching at Colorado by the time they get to the Pac-12. Colorado’s AD openly said after the season that they would have fired Hawkins but they didn’t have the $3.1 million needed to buy out his contract. After this season they will owe him much less money if they fire him…

  42. Garret September 12, 2010 11:07 am

This Colorado site really is down on their team. Their ticket sales have been pretty bad so they just dropped the price on tickets to the UH game.

For all intents and purposes, nothing seems to have changed.

Are the Buffs still a heavily penalized team? Yes

Are the Buffs unprepared with what looks like no offensive identity? Yes

Do the Buffs still make the same special teams mistakes? Yes

Do teams in BCS conferences continue to make our athletes look inferior? Yes

Do the Buffs lack emotion on the road? Yes

We already received emails from the University that Hawaii tickets are going 4 for $60. Soon enough, the Rockpile in Coors Field will be a more expensive ticket. Can’t imagine what tickets will go for when Iowa State comes to town or Kansas State or Baylor.

  43. Shoko September 12, 2010 11:12 am

    Garret,

Good point. I do recall that they were near firing Hawkins last year, but because of the deficit and the amount to pay out Hawkins contract, they decided to give him another year. If there is any glimpse of hope for Colorado’s season, that might, just might, buy Hawkins some time. We’ll see. At least they didn’t lose to CSU this year.

That Vegas line you mentioned tells me one thing. They don’t have confidence in the Warriors rush defense. In fact, Sagarin didn’t even update his stats after this weeks games and LVSC already came out with a line? Sad, just have to prove them wrong.

  44. papajoe2 September 12, 2010 11:15 am

Michele Wie down 2 with 2 hole remaining. Currently tied for 2nd. Cannot handle pressure?

  45. Slugger September 12, 2010 11:16 am

    #24, #31,

The value of training at altitude, I’ve been told, is getting your body to generate more red blood cells which helps to increase the oxygen-carrying capacity in your bod. It does take more than one week to do that. During activity, if you’re not used to the altitude, you will run out of breath, because there is less oxygen up there. While living at 7,000 ft. in Flagstaff, there were Olympic swim teams, runners, training in FLG, but usually for at least a month. The AZ Cardinals train in FLG for the month of August before their pre-season games. I think it’s partly to get out of the heat in PHX, though. I take a supplement that increases oxygen at the cellular level, so I had help, beside living there for over 20 years…

  46. Garret September 12, 2010 11:17 am

Sagarin has updated computer rankings. If you use his system, Colorado should NOT be favored by much at all against UH. It is nice that UH has moved so far up on the ELO_CHESS computer ranking (that is one of the BCS computer rankings).

    1. BSU

    19. Fresno State

    51. Nevada

    59. UH

    98. SJSU

    101. Utah State

    110. Idaho

    186. NMSU (!!!)

    57. Colorado

Note that if you look at his Predictor category, he actually has UH slightly above Colorado.

  47. 99club September 12, 2010 11:18 am

    Garret-

From the looks of things, that 11 point line will come down once folks from CO put their money down on Hawaii. The only thing Hawkins has going for him right now is he hasn’t played a Big-12 game yet.

  48. Garret September 12, 2010 11:18 am

    Shoko,

Sagarin already updated his stats. I posted that above.

  49. Garret September 12, 2010 11:20 am

    99club,

I think that things are going to be much, much worse for Hawkins once he starts Big 12 play. If Colorado loses to UH, I seriously doubt that he will finish this season as head coach of Colorado.

  50. Garret September 12, 2010 11:21 am

Colorado has 1 more nonconference game after they play UH…the team they play after UH is *Georgia*.

  51. OldDiver September 12, 2010 11:24 am

    Hawaii plus 11.

  52. 99club September 12, 2010 11:26 am

    #50- Yikes! See ‘ya “Hawk”!

  53. Garret September 12, 2010 11:26 am

It is really odd the Ikaika Alama-Francis would go from practicing with the 1st team D to being on the inactive list for today’s game. He may be injured of ill, as it sure seemed like he was going to start or at least be in the rotation.

    This is weird.

After working with the first-team defense for much of the past couple weeks, after seemingly supplanting second-rounder Koa Misi as the Miami Dolphins’ best run-stopping option at strongside linebacker, Ikaika Alama-Francis is listed as inactive for today’s season-opener at Buffalo.

  54. 99club September 12, 2010 11:28 am

  55. Garret September 12, 2010 11:29 am

Nice to see that Bess had 6 catches for 51 yards today. He even had 1 rushing attempt.

  56. Garret September 12, 2010 11:31 am

Ryan Mouton had 2 solo tackles today.

  57. Shoko September 12, 2010 11:40 am

    Garret,

Thanks for for the update. Seems my saved Sagarin’s link doesn’t automatically update the past weeks scores. Funny, I could have sworn last season the updates worked even if you saved the link. Oh well, mental note: navigate from the USA Today website or Sagarin’s main page.

Predictor points as I understand it is based on style points. Colorado, again, hasn’t really put up points, even against CSU. If Colorado loses to the Warriors and, most certainly will lose to Georgia, Hawkins will be refered in the past tense. If not for the Colorado home advantage (3 points), the Hawaii-Colorado game should be on the up-and-up. Again, just goes to show you LVSC doesn’t have much confidence in Hawaii’s defense. I’m still optimistic tho. 🙂

  58. Garret September 12, 2010 11:42 am

The MWC without Utah and BYU and with BSU, Fresno, and Reno actually has a higher Sagarin computer ranking than the Big East. If the Big East keeps struggling in nonconference play this season, they could be make the MWC an AQ conference–all the MWC has to do is be in the top 6 in computer rankings and the Big East is giving them that.

When the Big East adds the D-IAA team they plan to add, their computer ranking will plummet and the MWC will be insured an AQ spot since they will be top 6 in each category. Unless the MWC gets raided by someone (Big 12? Big East?), the Big East seems to be handing things to the MWC.

  59. 99club September 12, 2010 11:44 am

Wie comes in second after tieing it up with a birdie on 18, only to watch Yani Tseng make a birdie to win. A win last week, second place this week. Not bad!

  61. Garret September 12, 2010 11:48 am

The Executive Director of the BCS says that the MWC is on track for AQ status.

  62. 99club September 12, 2010 11:49 am

Hmmm…Las Vegas is listed as 2066 ft elevation. Maybe that’ll help a little. More L&L’s in the area helps too.

  63. WenatcheeWarrior September 12, 2010 11:57 am

  67. Mike J September 12, 2010 12:04 pm

Any chance John Hardy-Tuliau could see an increased role on defense?

He’s agressive and makes plays, couldn’t do any worse than some of UH’s other defensive starters.

    us – W

    them – L

    😀 LOL

  82. buffoman September 12, 2010 1:30 pm

Special teams need work. Watching the game again, too many errors. This was set up by the muffed ball by Lolotai on kick off. Then the 12 men led Army to a touchdown. On ensuing kick off Dimude has a good kick off nullified with a hold. Moniz fumbles on the series, Army scores again.

    Don’t you think there’s a problem here?

I also agree with Pomai, Davis is terrible. My have been good last year but this is a new year and he is terrible.

  83. GM1217 September 12, 2010 1:32 pm

Would like to see the Warriors mix up their plays a bit more and take advantage of quick rushing defensive ends coming around the edge by running more to the gaps left. Since the running backs are lined up behind the QB now, it helps that we can utilize play action a bit more. Need to keep the opponents D honest and stop them from merely teeing off by pass rushing our QB all the time (like Army did).

Also, would like to see more disipline and much better special team play. If our kicker can’t get the ball into the endzone on kickoffs, we should use a scholarship and get a kicker who can!!! It’s worth it when the opponent starts on the 20 instead of the 40 all the time!!!

Good lord. Colorado is horrible. We lose by this much to them, Id think we’d develop some new problems that would prevent us from having a good season.

    Colorado is garbage.

    Happy Birthday to Ryan Grice-Mullins.

Buffoman….Agree totally with you! Special teams needs a lot of work and discipline! And defense needs to get a lot better too! Still a lot of work to do for those 2 coaches responsible for special teams (Tormey) and defense (Aranda).

  88. Ipu Man September 12, 2010 1:57 pm

I suspect Colorado’s Hawkins will get desparate and try out

a bunch of trick plays. But Moniz iz da man!

    UH 76 CO 36

  89. SteveM September 12, 2010 2:03 pm

Am watching the UH-Army replay. I noticed I missed a lot of stuff on and off the field during the first half. Note to self: start eating the buffet ASAP. Miss things when eating and eating and making multiple trips to the line and coffee urn. 😐

…but then, polynesian paralysis after the half… 😕 Maybe buffets are not a good thing for games, although I don’t think there’ll another one until the Boise away game at my favorite PPV spot.

    …OK, final minutes coming up…..

While communicating today with some friends, I have come to the realization that gmahoney is not who I thought she was. So, I must publicly apologize to you, gmahoney, for that assumption. That’s the hard part of not knowing who is really who, behind these names. A friend of mine since intermediate school went through an identical situation with her husband this year. Thoughts and prayers continue to both you, and her.

As I’d stated previously, I graduated from Campbell High, spent a bunch of years in the Army, followed by several more years with Eagle Hardware & Garden. We moved to Michigan back in ’96, and have been here ever since.

If any of you are interested in contacting me to talk story about UH, home, the Army, or whatevas, you are more than welcome to do so. I can be reached at SaxRox2id@comcast (dot) net. I am also on Facebook, and often comment on UH posts. But, you won’t get my name off of this place… only via email.

So again, gmahoney, my apologies on the assumptions. We still pay a visit to Noble’s at least once a month. I gotta get my dosage of inari, mochi crunch, and Hawaiian Sun drinks!

  91. buffoman September 12, 2010 2:12 pm

Our d-tackles played a very credible game.

I said it yesterday and was sort of rebuffed, but like Ipu man – Moniz is Da man.

Austin may be a good q-back, but Moniz, at time is the guy that needs to be at the control.

  92. RedZone September 12, 2010 2:35 pm

No panic in Moniz even when at times the pocket collapsed. Huge throw and catch by Moniz and Pollard to setup the winning fieldgoal by Enos. Big time play by Umu to force the fumble to turn the monentum to UH. Which brings the question. Army fumbled the ball with over 40 seconds on the clock. The refs let it run down to 24 seconds before calling a timeout to have it review. After the call was made shouldn’t the clock have been reset back at least 41 seconds? Should the clock have been stopped at the time the change of possesstion occurred?

My player of the game who I think played really well is Haku Correa who had 8 tackles as a DT.

  97. al September 12, 2010 2:49 pm

cmon now guys…didn’t we just win a game? didn’t we give usc all they wanted?

look for the positive that we can build on.

not the negative or the perceived negative.

davis is one whom the scouts still have an eye on.

i think many on defense are still adjusting to the new defensive schemes, alignment, and assigments. once the theory clicks in we will play faster and more furious. watch. no difference than offense, it takes a while to learn the system that is trying to be implemented.

good example was gdl who played like a deer in headlights against almighty usc but on saturday he looked more like the allstater that he was in hs. he had 12 tackles.

  98. madeinhawaii September 12, 2010 2:51 pm

Seemed like Moniz got sacked more times than he should have against Army.

  102. Pomai September 12, 2010 3:34 pm

al what scouts? It sure couldn’t be for the NFL, an even if they were then they won’t after the last game. Sorry but the fact is that the corners is the major with the D, look at the tapes, usc nor army could get much up the middle, but every play to either side made good yards, an no pass coverage on his side at all. Army Could have won if they had went to the outside instead of the middle, our middle line is soild.

  103. Markazulu September 12, 2010 3:36 pm

All I can say is in the final 24 sec’s it showed why the coaches chose Bryant Moniz as the Starting QB I’m not worried if Shane Austin comes in though but I can see why the coaches chose him to be our Starter. But I wonder what happen to our D. Not that they played good but they play a lot different then years past they just dont seem to be bringing that intensity that was brough when Blaze was back there. I’m a believer in them and our coaches. But I think on 2 phases espically defense they need that intensity. Offense even though Army did well adjustments to stop us I just hope Bryant Moniz wont be pressured like that all year. They played stellar against USC but I say they played alright yesterday. They just need to play with the 3 I’s Integrity, Intensity, & Intelligence.

    Go Warriors.

Colorado’s o-line looks like a basketball team; 6’9″,6’8″,6’6″. Their defense height wise looks like Army’s. I didn’t see the Colorado, Cal game, did Colorado look like they have little team speed?

  110. protector September 12, 2010 4:07 pm

Belated Congrats to CRW. That 30-27 prediction is Swami-like! I called for a 32 point blow-out by UH and really thought there was a chance back in the 2nd quarter; well so much for that. I like the idea of bringing in Kawika Ornellas. Though still relatively inexperienced, I honestly think he’ll make less mistakes than LD there. Putting LD at safety just might bring out the best in him.

  111. d1島 September 12, 2010 4:15 pm

Can our punter do kick offs from a tee? He should have the leg for it— just bury it in the end zone. No return–no problem for special teams on kickoffs.

  117. al September 12, 2010 5:06 pm

    zzzzzzzssssnoorrrttt…ahem.

wow, arising from a long nap.

i knew that third plate would do it.

  118. Hank September 12, 2010 5:07 pm

…i can’t help but remember that emotional 2007 win at La Tech, and thereafter having to stay on the road against a UNLV team that was reeling from a tough loss the previous week….the Warriors went on to win 49-14 in Vegas…

  119. al September 12, 2010 5:08 pm

although deserving…i’d have to pick bubba because we lost a safety we should replace em with a safety. but if we send brown to strong safety then tonga would fit in to his position and then the least amount of changes would occur. less of a domino effect with brown going back there.

just concerned if aaron has the foot speed?

  120. al September 12, 2010 5:10 pm

hank, #116…we are on the same page, eh? #95

ornellas had a lot of pt last year. believe he started a couple.

  122. Hank September 12, 2010 5:14 pm

…gotta give credit to Army…in the second and third quarter…they decided to get more physical and man up….it was really great to see that our Defense didn’t give up and came back to shut them down in the fourth quarter…

…sometimes football isn’t any more complicated than Mano-a-mano…

  123. Hank September 12, 2010 5:15 pm

    absolutely AL….

  124. al September 12, 2010 5:17 pm

#103…simply, army adjusted very well to what we were doing. in fact, i believe they practiced that all week but saved it for later when they really needed it. army came out with a completely different look, and one could see that they didn’t just draw it up at the half.

we didn’t adjust to their new attack. they pounded the middle until we became so conscious of it that we forgot our outside responsibilities. every time they needed a big play they burned us outside because we played with too much tendencies towards the middle. you could predict from watching at home what was coming.

alignment and assignment broke down. good lesson for the future. fixable.

  125. al September 12, 2010 5:18 pm

yup, too bad i listened to the boss. otherwise, i would have had two houses.

  126. Hank September 12, 2010 5:19 pm

He’s going to practice at safety.

  129. al September 12, 2010 5:26 pm

i agree with yah hank. he has all the tools and did the job last year.

interesting seeing graves being plucked. although some recruited him as a safety out of hs. got 4.6 legs.

  130. al September 12, 2010 5:26 pm

i guess they want to redshirt bubba.

  131. Hank September 12, 2010 5:28 pm

…#97 al…i also think that GDL had a great game – excited about his future…

…and Paipai’s coming…it’s a different mentality going from DE to Linebacker…you have to “think more” rather than attack – but once it clicks for him….

Paredes continues to be solid…and they all come back next year.

  132. al September 12, 2010 5:28 pm

I just don’t see him getting into the game at DB.

  143. postmanke September 12, 2010 6:18 pm

impressive first 2 games! esp impressed with the conditioning of the D this early in the season. Good work! – i dont care.. good work! =) Hope the coaching staff can do what they can to solidify some recruits in Vegas in a “Major” way while there. dont “Mook” now, wonder if he is on the UH recruiting radar – bring him back! if not, “Tai” some loose ends @ Liberty HS!

    Kill the Buffs!

  144. Bowbooze September 12, 2010 6:26 pm

    #141 – papajoe2:

The game starts at 9:30 a.m. Hawaii time on Saturday.

  145. Stephen Tsai September 12, 2010 6:26 pm

I have to do some number crunching, but it appears that the toll of the past two years is starting to hit UH’s depth.

There have been a lot of graduations, a lot of unexpected losses, too.

    For instance, Jovonte Taylor.

  146. Stephen Tsai September 12, 2010 6:27 pm

Theres a 4-hour time difference between Hawaii and Colorado.

And, don’t forget, no free TV.

  147. Curt September 12, 2010 6:52 pm

David Graves playing safety? As John McEnroe used to say: “You have got to be kidding!” I can see it in practice but not in a game situation. Stephen, are you feeling okay? 😉

  148. jm2375 September 12, 2010 6:56 pm

Aloha Oe – I’ve been a Redskins fan since I went to college in the area, back at the start of the first Joe Gibbs era. I don’t like what they did to Colt either.

Redskins – new coach, new OC, new QB, same story – no offensive tds. *tsigh* Good thing the Cowgirls were stupid today.

  149. RedZone September 12, 2010 6:57 pm

  151. Justin September 12, 2010 7:03 pm

I mentioned Graves as a potential contributor to the offense because of his athletic ability. Good speed and moves. Maybe a few snaps, who knows.

Check out his hs highlight tape, nice quicks.

  153. Aloha Oe September 12, 2010 7:04 pm

Curt – i agree with you, but it’a question for Coach Mack to answer.

how would you feel if you were a back-up safety practicing all during spring ball, summer workouts and fall camp and when you think you finally get a break (sorry Spencer no pun intended) the coach moves a qb ahead of you.

    GO FIGURE!

not a good way too boast morale.

i guess that’s why he makes the BIG BUCK$!

  155. Aloha Oe September 12, 2010 7:06 pm

  156. Curt September 12, 2010 7:09 pm

Actually, John McEnroe’s more famous utterance is “You can’t be serious!” If I see Graves playing safety against Colorado or any other opponent, I’ll probably fall off of my rocking chair. But Stephen has da inside scoop or he’s pulling on all of our collective legs. Are you pulling Stephen?

  157. Curt September 12, 2010 7:14 pm

    Aloha Oe,

Actually, I’m thinking Graves is still here in the islands. He must really be good if he can be here attending classes and playing safety against Colorado at the same time. Now, that’s really good.

  158. Shoko September 12, 2010 7:14 pm

I think about this way. Graves has speed and thats what you want in a safety. Graves, to me, is a duel-threat QB that can be effective in the Pistol formation, however, I think he lacks experience at this level. Give him time and he will be an asset in the future. The good thing about having a QB, albeit short on experience, he has the mindset of how a QB thinks and that can be an advantage as a CB or safety.

  159. Curt September 12, 2010 7:15 pm

Okay. I’m off to see da Wizard.

  160. Aloha Oe September 12, 2010 7:19 pm

    Curt

the ‘plan’ would be to fly Graves to Vegas to get him up to speed w/the D.

  161. madeinhawaii September 12, 2010 7:28 pm

    al,

Was it just 3 sacks? felt like more… maybe cause he ran out of the pocket a good number of times, it just felt like a lot more.

Graves to safety? Interesting choice.. but since the Safety is the last line of defense, if the rest of the team cover well, then hopefully we won’t have to lean on him too much.. But a Safety that can figure out what a QBack is going to do might be able to preempt a passing play effectively.

  162. gigi-hawaii September 12, 2010 7:32 pm

Never second guess the coaches. There must be a compelling reason for bringing in Graves. Maybe they know something we don’t.

  163. Ralph September 12, 2010 7:33 pm

a QB is a valuable commodity on any fb team, why risk injury playing defense unless they don’t see him playing a major role as UH’s qb.

  164. al September 12, 2010 7:33 pm

    yup, three sacks.

  165. Slugger September 12, 2010 7:40 pm

I go to practice & watch…and Graves works with the scout team at QB…he has past experience as a SB, CB & QB…he gets to hear the coaching from Miano, Aranda & Tormey, and play against the defense, so he at least has some understanding of our defense…and MIH has a point in his understanding of the opponent’s QB…it might make sense…the coaches know his talent better than we do… Maybe they are going to redshirt Bubba…

  166. al September 12, 2010 7:42 pm

graves is a tough kid and a very good athlete as well. he is the qb of the future but, that is reserved for his junior year after the moniz era. so why not get him on the field just like the old days when your qb, normally your best athlete, played both ways.

  167. al September 12, 2010 7:45 pm

graves also was a very good wide receiver his first year on the varsity hs team. i believe he also played rb his soph hs year.

oh, and he is a world class musician.

  168. OldDiver September 12, 2010 7:45 pm

    #166

I agree, the coaches probably said we want to fly up the best available athlete.

  169. Slugger September 12, 2010 7:49 pm

  174. al September 12, 2010 8:06 pm

sometimes you all gotta sit back and not take things too seriously.

to me, you gotta read between the lines. graves came out of spring/fall camp as highly regarded and they definitely have him penciled in when moniz is done to become the qb of the future. they got to keep him happy, bringing him up may do that and also as a reward for his hard work.

oh, and he is a very good athlete.

  175. al September 12, 2010 8:09 pm

  185. Aloha Oe September 12, 2010 8:27 pm

  187. al September 12, 2010 8:29 pm

okay, i am not saying he’ll get in the game, cuz if he does my guess is it will be at qb. but, i lot will have to take place before that happens. he could enter as the third qb.

Sheesh… if any one in the pool had rasu begasu showing up at Genji’s to do some enka crooning in “rehearsal” for this Saturday, the winner is: SUNDAY at 0030 in the main lounge. 😐

You win 2 karaoke tokens for this Saturday. Shucks, I had Monday 2030 in the bar side. I could still win yet 🙄

(Belated) 2nd Anniversary Tsai-ko Karaoke Call

Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 7:00 PM at Club Genji

Join rasu begasu who caused the first-ever Tsai-ko karaoke dinner…at the place that it was first held…. with most of the Tsai-kos who attended the first one (except for Stretch who will in Colorado).

It will be a night of Japanese enka, english, and Hawaiian karaoke. Korean too by request.

Dinner/pupus are optional and off the menu. No cover charge or drink minimum. Karaoke songs are $1 each. Come for dinner or just drop in for a while.

email SteveM for room count purposes and parking instructions if you have not been to Genji’s in the evening.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We know ST and many Tsai-kos will be at the UH-Colorado on the 18th, but the rasu begasu family is meeting here in Hawaii for their parent’s memorial service this week. This determined the date of their availability.

beating colorado on the road could pay huge dividends.

especially if we want to go independent. beating a bcs and future pac12 school could go a long way for independent survival and as well as any future conference considerations (anywhere).

this season is such a pivotal one for our future. anything short of 8-5 will ruin our hopes of being a viable independent or a conference realignment candidate.

…and viable in that we need to be considered a good tv choice for the saturday night live football show.

  231. Shannon September 12, 2010 9:46 pm

Hey Tsaikos… Long time no blog…I been on lurker status for a while…

Here’s what I thought of the Army game, which I got to see LIVE on CBSHD on DirecTv in NorCal 😉

Offense obviously was clicking early in the game… O line needs to adjust to Dline stunts better, recognize LB’s showing blitzes and call em out presnap, but might just be a “gel-ing” issue, since they’re only 2 games into playing together… (hoping) Dropped balls might be accepted in a more pro style offense…NOT in the RNS/4wide…ALL of our WR’s/SB’s are playmakers and Green is bound to gather 100 yd games consistently… Needless to say Moniz is nearly FLAWLESS.

Defense is struggling… They’ve allowed 72 pts in 2 games… no bueno. No doubt the TALENT is there but long, sustained, 8+ play drives are exhausting and demoralizing… D line might be the strongest unit… LB’s are OK but need to pursue better…I agree with an earlier post about moving Aaron Brown back to Safety…

Special teams… Mana Lolotai might need to practice with the jugs machine… lol I would LOVE to see Sampson be the full time KR & PR… obviously John Hardy-Tuliau made a BIG TIME play and should be rewarded… Enos has been playing solid…

    re: Graves getting called up.

What the? I thought for sure Bubba or Tonga would get the call. For those citing that Graves’

knowledge as QB may be valuable if / when he plays safety, didn’t Bubba have a lot of PT as both a QB AND slotback as well as DB? I agree with Ralph that it’s a questionable move to risk

(the physical safety of) a QB of David’s caliber in addition to throwing a monkey-wrench into plans for red-shirting him. I don’t mind Bubba’s red-shirting being messed with because he can be a big contributor THIS year. Tonga also would’ve been good in helping with the loss of Smith, with a little juggling / shifting of personnel.

    Candy on #113,

I’ve been suggesting the same thing to friends and fellow Tsaikos about Dunnachie kicking off. I don’t understand why they won’t do this, especially since they won’t consider letting Tyler H do it. I doubt kicking-off duties would affect Dunnachie’s punting a bit and Enos could just concentrate on field goals. Come on Coach Tormey! Pretty please with sugar on top…?

    al on #246,

No, I’ve never seen him kick-off; it’s purely speculation that I feel he might do well at it. We’ve been told that he has versatility in ways of kicking the ball with angles and back-spin, etc. I was thinking that he could punt the ball sideways (as we were told he often did with Aussie Football / Rugby)? Or he could just straight-away punt it and I STILL figure he’d kick it deeper or further than what Enos is giving us now. I’m sure he can punt it at least 60 yards in the air, cant he? I’m sure of it.

  252. Shannon September 12, 2010 11:00 pm

@Steve M: Yes I do… Hoping to make it down to Fresno this year!

  253. protector September 12, 2010 11:03 pm

    Different question on Dunnachie:

If he CAN control the punt and put back-spin on it and kick it different angles, WHY didn’t they let him attempt to kick the punt at an angle to the sideline so it would go out inside the 10

rather than the botched “pooch kick” attempt? If he botched an angle kick, it still probably wouldn’t have let USC start any further than the 20…

  254. SteveM September 12, 2010 11:07 pm

protector…a kickoff can only be kicked off of a tee. a punt may not be used during a kickoff.

a punt is only from behind the line of scrimmage during one of any of the four downs that a team has when possession changes hands.

the only other time a punt may be done is after a safety.

kickoffs these days also start at the 30 ydline

  266. Michigan Warrior September 13, 2010 1:33 am

Yup, a little surprised at Graves’ name being called.

One thing about Colorado in their game against Cal… no matter how many times they didn’t gain anything, or even lost yards, they kept running it and running it and running it. They made lots of mistakes in that game, with lots of turnovers and untimely penalties. Think they might try to exact some revenge on us since we’re next up? Gonna be a tough game. Cal’s D-line owned the game. We can too, but they’ll need help. Gotta fill the gaps and wrap up. Bumping guys to bring them down won’t work.

Maybe at altitude, we may actually get our first touchback of the year. We’ll see. Same with punts… I say just blast that ball and let them always start at their own 20. Forget the finesse kicking and worrying about coverages… just kick that ball!

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Looks like some good discussions last night RE: Graves. Shoko’s #158 makes sense about having a QB’s thought process on D. Can’t remember which game I was watching last week where that same situation was commented on about a D player who was a QB in a past life. Right after they mentioned it, the player grabbed an interception. Graves sounds like a true renaissance man…RE: al #163, which instrument(s) does he play? Also, 10 pts works for me (small time). Never saw 11.

Watching the ND game made me wonder if Montana’s son Nate is on scholarship or would his dad foot the bill by signing a few footballs.

ST- I second #221’s suggestion for Brazilian steakhouse. Tried it for the first time a couple weeks ago in San Antonio and loved it. A bit expensive but worth every penny.

Nice article on Graves. Sorry to read about Spencer Smith being out for 6-8 weeks after surgery for the fracture. On TV they called it a sprained elbow at the time. Sure hope he’s back for at least the last three games plus the Hawaii Bowl. Making it back in time for the Boise game is probably hoping for too much.

  359. Hi guys, and women, I woke up somewhat early tonight, and chose to share a unique website with those of you who enjoy virtual worlds like “Farmville”, “IMVU”, “The Sims”, or anything related to moving a fake avatar through a virtual world, this one is a bit different though, but in a interesting way. It’s called “Habbo” or “Habbo Hotel” as it used to be called before they altered it, the only fall-back to the game, is that it’s EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE to play it, I mean you will go broke in real life, if you want a cool looking room, I spent about 60$ on it, and my room didn’t even compare to the ones I truly looked up to, determined to make my dream room and not spend MORE money, I started asking others for cheats for the game, none existed, but someone did tell me about something called “Habbo Retros” It’s a FREE version of Habbo, run by everyday people like me, & best of all, there’s HUNDREDS of them in existence, literally, I didn’t believe the person when they told me, so I went to Google and searched for “Habbo Retros with pets” & Habbo Retros With VIP” and sure enough, good ol’ reliable Google, took me to this AMAZING website called “HabboRetros.net” It’s a list of all the most enjoyable free versions of Habbo, I joined the Top Habbo Retros on the site & discovered these are the COOLEST types of Habbo to play. nobody is worrying about becoming rich, or getting scammed, because EVERYTHING is free, or so cheap it doesn’t even matter, and the best part was, people make their own pieces of furni, & there’s always a fun “Event” or contest going on, meaning I don’t get bored when I visit, people may call these “fake Habbos” but to me, this is the real Habbo, well that sums it up for now, I gotta be at my job soon, be sure to check back here tomomorrow for my next cool thing I find, & enjoy your new Habbo Retros http://www.habboretros.net

I went to see the town today loved the image. I maintain hearing the Departed meets Heat? I really feel The Town is closer to a male model of Collection it off with Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett.I’m going to determine this film extra. And for those who haven’t noticed fixed it off rent it.Every single once in awhile a pic comes along that regularly the Box Workplace by surprise. The Town is this kind of a snapshot this year. It took optimal field office returns this week for a reason….It’s A Really Excellent pic! I am not a Ben Affleck lover but I will need to hand to him, he delivered the excellent accurate. Acting nicely as directing this movie, Affleck is very convincing as economic institution robber Doug MacRae. This storytelling at it is highly and the casting was perfect for this tale set in place in the suburbs of Boston. The photograph strikes an extraordinary balance between character growth and flat out measures scenes. Parts from the film experienced been made in Fenway Park, household in the Red Sox which becoming an avid baseball lover, produced the photograph a whole lot more fulfilling to me.The ending to the film is constantly doubtful since it retains the audience riveted to the storyline. Fans of large shoot outs, presume the action picture Heat, will get their monies price correct. Overall a surprisingly superior film exactly where the viewer can give some thought to a 2 hour thrill ride and appear away utterly happy. A should see for the significant pic goer.”The Town” is outstanding! This really is how the story goes: Doug MacRay is definitely an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless economic institution robbers who pride on their own in stealing what they need and getting out clear. With no real attachments, Doug never has to worry losing anyone shut to him. But that all altered on the gang’s most recent employment, now that briefly took a hostage–bank supervisor, Claire Keesey. Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her identify and in which she lives. But she lets her guard lower when she meets an unassuming and really quite charming guy named Doug not realizing that he will likely be exact man who only nights earlier acquired terrorized her. The prompt attraction between them steadily turns into a passionate romance that threatens to bear in mind them each down a unsafe, and possibly deadly, path. The cast led by Ben Affleck (who also directed and co-wrote the screenplay) (in an awesome general as Doug MacRay), Rebecca Hall (as Claire Keesey), Jon Hamm (as Frawley), Jeremy Renner (as Jem), Blake Lively (as Krista), Pete Postlethwaite (as Fergie) & Chris Cooper (as Stephen MacRay) is stunning! The directing by Affleck (who also directed & co-wrote the screenplay to “Gone Baby Gone” (2007) is remarkable! The screenplay (based on Chuck Hogan’s novel “Prince Of Thieves”) by Affleck, Aaron Stockard (who also co-wrote the screenplay to “Gone Baby Gone”, also an associate producer) & Peter Craig is excellent!

This really is how the story goes: Doug MacRay is definitely an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who delight on their own in stealing what they want and getting out clear. With no actual attachments, Doug by no means has to fright losing anybody close to him. But that all transformed on the gang’s latest employment, once briefly took a hostage–bank manager, Claire Keesey. Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously conscious that the robbers know her title and where by she lives. But she lets her guard along when she meets an unassuming and quite charming guy named Doug not realizing that he are going to be same guy who only days previously acquired terrorized her. The prompt attraction between them steadily turns right into a passionate romance that threatens to think about them each lower a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path. The cast led by Ben Affleck (who also directed and co-wrote the screenplay) (in an really good performance as Doug MacRay), Rebecca Corridor (as Claire Keesey), Jon Hamm (as Frawley), Jeremy Renner (as Jem), Blake Lively (as Krista), Pete Postlethwaite (as Fergie) & Chris Cooper (as Stephen MacRay) is remarkable!

Lindsay Lohan seems so far removed from reality that she will publicize her own clothing line on her way to court Sept. 24. The 24-year-old actress wore her 6126 clothing line, sporting a black 6126 blazer, which she also paired with an innocent white skirt and black lacy top. We’ll admit, she looked good — but she dressed more like she was going out to one of her usual night haunts, rather than appearing before the law. Clearly, her promiscuous choice in self-designed clothing didn’t sway the judge…and now she’s in an orange jumpsuit until Oct. 22! Are you going to do what Lindsay can’t, run out and get some of her 6126 court apparel

American would buy American made cars if the American car companies made cars we wanted. What is the matter with GM? It has been obvious for years that Americans wanted cars like Hondas and Toyotas, yet the big 3 continue to build junk. They deserve to fail.

  514. perlengkapan bayi October 12, 2010 3:47 am

Because the only way the administration can sell this is by presenting the idea of massive job loss. Now having said that I must also say this. You cannot just talk about those people working in the actual assembly plants. There are also subsidiaries and vendors who supply these plants. The workforces who sell and service the cars. Not to mention any number of businesses unrelated to the actual company who depend on the worker dollars to remain in business. I am against the auto bailout and have been from the start, but your post does not really paint a true picture of the scope of the problem related to possible job loss.
