2009 was a good year for food. Here were some of my favorites:

Hong Kong Noodle House:

Gator from Shreveport, La.:

And Stretch’s crawfish, also from Shreveport:

“Ferd” found cranberry margarita from Chevy’s ย in Reno:

And a milkshake from Taylor’s in Napa:

Princess Leila hunted down an In-N-Out burger in Las Vegas:

And one of our new blog readers, I Love Pecan Pie, told us where to find pecan pies in Honolulu:

But the best meal of the year came from the kitchen of Jon Yoshimoto, a cousin-in-law who also is a firefighter. He makes the best barbecue beef. So, naturally, the only picture I have is of my niece, Shasta, eating salad:

  35. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc January 3, 2010 8:50 am

Should have picked up the typo yesterday, but I didn’t see it until someone’s post about comment moderation.

Pomai: Colt turns 27 next August – that, plus his seaso-ending injury, is what prompted my thoughts about his considering career alternatives.

Last night’s men’s basketball game was not at bad as Derek argues. The absence of Petrous Balocka on the court after the first five minutes or so plus Dwain William’s siignificantly reduced playing time made a huge difference.

The biggest loss of the night was actually the disappearance of the consistent three-pointers which have been present in earlier games this season. It’s not that a lot were missed but that a lot of the outside shooting didn’t even happen.

The other big loss was not having Balocka’s presence under the basket to pick up the ball.

The Vandals are a very good team and the Rainbow Warriors kept them hustling throughout the game.

The Stan Sheriff Center was about 40% full and really loud – about the only way to communicate was through sign language.

Now – as for the coaches. Yes, I agree that it’s probably time to start searching for Nash’s replacement; No matter what, we’ll be at the rest of the games this season.

Off to work again – one of these days when the economy gets better, we can expand the staff so that I don’t wind up doing five people’s jobs.

  36. Hawaiianbod January 3, 2010 8:51 am

    g’morning Tsaikos!

    oldie on # 31,

You’re right about that scenario if it played out like that. I can’t see JJ leaving SMU until he accomplishes a few more things, though. I actually see him leaving in 3 more years if his team becomes Conference Champs, beats some big-name teams in the Bowls and ranks in the Top Ten a couple of times. Then he’d have no more dragons to slay (barring a national championship) other than to return to the NFL to show the up the doubters.

  46. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2010 9:32 am

    Doc:
I thought it was exciting game, given the comeback attempt.
And UH has had a lot of guys who could create their own shots: AC, Alika, Carl English, Geramy Robinson, Savo, Ray Reed, Phil Lott, etc.
It’s hard to go umptempo in league games because there’s so much info out there. Hey, Kobe’s Lakers don’t even run-and-gun it, like Magic-Worthy’s Lakers.

  47. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2010 9:34 am

We’ve got an office party today. I’ll have more food photos.

  48. griz January 3, 2010 9:37 am

Why would you bench the 2-3rd best rebounder in the WAC?
Coach says he was missing in action. He played 5 minutes in the first half and 2 minutes in the 2nd half. HE WAS NOT IN THE ACTION. Give him a chance to come back in and make a difference coach! The offense froze and Nash spends most of the time out having a coaches meeting. Riley new exactly what was going on and what to tell the players. Nash can’t keep up. He does waive a mean towel though – Oh wait he gave up the towel when he became head coach.
    Next Coach please!

  49. Stephen Tsai January 3, 2010 9:39 am

    Stretch:
That was one of the best naps I ever had.
I used to make that drive after a redeye flight. I remember during one visit, I drove to the campus, then took the daughter and her friends on shopping and eating trips. Ended up driving more than 400 miles. Then I went back to S.F. for the flight to Boise.
I appreciate your chauffeuring on the SJ trip.

    oldie & waiter,

My short-term dream is that Mike Shanahan takes over as Redskins HC and hands the reins over to Colt and the rest will be history! If Shanahan takes over and doesn’t realize what he’s got right there in that inexpensive cupboard, then he’s not as bright as I believe he is.

If that’s not the ticket, then I have to hope the Jets, Browns, etc. come
a-calling because he’s better by far than anyone there including the over-priced, over-rated (and extremely lucky) Mark Sanchez.

They have 3 hours of entertainment and then the fireworks starts at 6pm, so it is a kid-friendly New Year’s Eve thing to do for us…and it is free for us.

  97. Garret January 3, 2010 12:59 pm

Bad news about VJ Feheko, with UH not in his top 3 choices.

V.J. Fehoko said Texas Tech is his clear leader right now. Utah and Washington would be No. 2 and No. 3 in his order of favorites. If Tech keeps Ruffin McNeill, it bodes very well for Tech with Fehoko.

  98. Garret January 3, 2010 1:03 pm

    Bighilofan2,

I like Bob Knight and followed his career at Indiana and Texas Tech. I even have a bunch of Indiana games taped from their last run to the national title under Knight. I initially thought that Leach was in the clear and that the things being said about Adam James were true…but the more that information comes out, the worse things looks for Leach. Here are some of the things that Texas Tech’s players are saying now:

Defensive tackle Chris Perry, to ESPN: “I have no complaints about this decision. [Leach] put Adam [James] in a shed like an animal. Like an animal in a cage. That was bull. You call other players. I think it was a good decision. We have our pep back now. We practice hard this week. We had less stress this week. You know why? Because he’s gone.”

Cornerback Taylor Charbonnet, to ESPN: “The players make this team, not one coach. As Adam’s friend, I didn’t like it at all what [Leach] did. He was my brother and I didn’t agree with it. I don’t know why [Leach] did that. But I know we our fully behind [interim] coach Ruffin [McNeil]. We love him and support him.”

Charbonnet’s older brother, former Tech safety Daniel Charbonnet, updated his Facebook status to the same effect this afternoon: “For everyone who wants to know what happen [sic], you probably never will. The only thing you should know is Coach Leach and Coach Leach alone is responsible for this. I wish it wasn’t like this.”

  99. Garret January 3, 2010 1:03 pm

With all that negativity coming out of Texas Tech, VJ *still* has them as his top choice and UH nowhere on his top 3 list…

  100. madeinhawaii January 3, 2010 1:04 pm

I suppose that means the Warriors have another scholie available to offer someone? Or is that someone already in the wings.. like say.. Umu?

  101. Garret January 3, 2010 1:05 pm

    Willie,

I’m glad to help another Warrior fan out. I was curious about Kellen Moore’s recruiting situation also, and found it interesting that he was a 4-star QB and that BSU was his only D-IA offer.

  102. Garret January 3, 2010 1:06 pm

    madeinhawaii,

The interesting comment that I read for Umu’s situation is that UH was keeping its options open with Umu, and Umu was keeping his options open with UH. So, neither side seems very committed in that situation…but maybe Umu would think more positively towards UH if UH could make a solid scholarship offer instead of a conditional one.

  103. whitey January 3, 2010 1:20 pm

good to see that j cullen, ot, still has sum interest in uh.

  104. whitey January 3, 2010 1:50 pm

think al is on the money as far as how scholies are still out. hopefully if we get 3 of those, that will really help the team big time.

  105. Kekoa (iPhone) January 3, 2010 1:54 pm

Sorry Ralph. Raiders can go fishing now.

    Thanks for the memories, Colt.

  106. Ralph January 3, 2010 2:52 pm

VJ’s brother sam played in TT bowl game in the first half but for some reason he was replaced by #57. I think Sam played in most of the games but not as a starter, he has about 13 tackles for the season, number that I think would be low for a starting MLB in the big 12 or someone who played a lot of snaps.

  107. Ralph January 3, 2010 2:58 pm

Garret isn’t Chris Perry listed as Adam James’ roommate, and a player who Leach disciplined twice and serves on TT scout team. I think he complained about his PT, an if he served on the scout team, his PT was minimal.

  108. redhill January 3, 2010 3:00 pm

    Thanks for the memories, Colt!

I was at last night’s UH-Idaho basketball game. When I saw the frustrated look on Balocka’s face and his body language after a play, I turned and told my wife that Coach Nash would take him out. And Coach sure did. I believe that Coach wanted B to cool down and compose himself. But B walked right past the coaches and teammates and sat himself at the end of the bench, forcing the seated players to get up and move one seat closer to the coaches. When I saw that happen, I figured B was in a bad, whiny mood that Coach would not tolerate. So I was not surprised when B sat out the rest of the half. But I was surprised when he hardly played in the second half. I thought B would prove to coaches, teammates and fans that he deserved to be on the floor, but again, he was a no show in the second half. Maybe he was ill, or injured, or as Coach commented, just didn’t have his usual energy level. I like B as a player and appreciate the impact he brings to the game when he’s playing with energy, but I wish he wasn’t such a high maintenance player.

  111. chawan_cut January 3, 2010 3:20 pm

man, it looks cold at some of these NFL games.
    Lucky we live Hawaii

  112. Derek January 3, 2010 3:20 pm

I never liked Craig James because he never said a positive thing about the Hawaii football team, especially in 2007 when we were undefeated.
Wasn’t he the one who said we only played cupcakes on ESPN? It still bothers me til today. Not surprisingly, I don’t believe what Adam James is saying either. Eventually, the truth will come out after Leach sues Texas Tech. Leach has been there 10 years and this is the first time that I know there is an issue with him. Either way, Leach will surface again in the future along w/ Tuberville, Barnett, Williingham, Mangino, Kragthorpe, etc., maybe even Bowden. You know he still wants to beat Paterno’s record if the right situation comes along.

Re: Cadiz, Lau, and the other smurfs. Nothing wrong with that if they can play and excel at the Divsion IA level. Chad Owens did. The secret,
quickness, strength, and toughness. I hope the coaches are right in their assessment because if not, the NFL will be determined. Not For Long. We’ll see. At best, Lau only made honorable mention for 2009.

redhill….i have a different take on balocka.

the guy is a very intelligent player and does all the little things to make himself and his teammates better. i believe his frustrations stem from not having that reciprocal court sense displayed by his teammates. he never belittles them but i’ll bet my lunch that is the source of his frustrations.

overall as a team, we do not play intelligently and continue to make mental errors which results in unnecessary turnovers. i also don’t believe that we play a system conducive to our strengths and weaknesses. it is obvious that we lack firepower from outside and we are soft inside without balocka. therefore, we should employ a gameplan that revolves around a tougher defense, even if we have to full court press the whole game and platoon then so be it.

we need to build our offense around the turnovers and chaos we create from an aggressive defense. we should be scoring 35% from layups because we won’t shoot 35% from outside.

    wafan:

good to hear you made it home safely and looking forward to the Spring semester with your students!

wind really picked up today and would say some gusts are well over 25mph.

  122. A-House January 3, 2010 4:03 pm

Would really like to see UH find a new, more representative “mascot” for the Warrior program.

  123. wafan January 3, 2010 4:18 pm

    Mr. A-House . . .

Only until the end of January then all of my classes change. Then I get confused with a different schedule and forced to learn the names of 132 new students. Ugh.

A few times in the past I started teaching the wrong class. I was really into the subject but the blank looks were a give-away. Oops. HA! Oh well. Helps to keep the kids on their toes.

Hopefully UH can get it right this year. They have been close…

    4. Hawaii Warriors
The numbers and “Hawaii” font is unique, and the colors go great together. Green and black is another combo not seen too often in football, and Hawaii makes it work.

The Warriors would be ranked higher, but I don’t like the little horns coming out of the color … that’s their only downfall.

  125. NYUH January 3, 2010 4:28 pm

Jets showing how the wildcat can work. To bad that train has left the station for UH.

  126. NYUH January 3, 2010 4:31 pm

Too bad…and on the uniforms I think they mean collar.

  127. al January 3, 2010 4:33 pm

although i am from the green and white era.

i am a uniform kind of guy and i say it is a mistake to deviate from the green and black.

i think the kids like em a lot and it has a menacing look to it that is football.

  128. Jack Flash January 3, 2010 5:07 pm

Good luck with your new head coach.

  129. Bowwar January 3, 2010 5:48 pm

    Thanks for the memories, Colt.

Hope Colt lands with a better team than the Redskins especially since Zorn is being fired…However, if Campbell is not coming back, maybe it might be a good place to stay and battle for the starting position…

  130. NYUH January 3, 2010 6:39 pm

Hope Colt gets a Oline like the Jets to protect him.

Maybe Shanahan would be the right coach for Colt. I think Zorn was too concerned about Colt’s mechanics. Colt is a QB who relies on his instincts.

I doubt anyone thought for a second VJ was considering UH. It’s not in the genes.

Ironically, his situation is sort of like that of Manley. We did not need another qb, and I doubt we need another tweener (guy smaller than ideal for end and slower than ideal for backer). It seems like we have 15 guys like that on this team.

  147. Laughing Out Loudโ„ข January 3, 2010 9:38 pm

TT interim HC of 1 week, he was the DC, the inside receiver coach becomes the OC, and TT does not miss a beat in their offense. Game management, no hesitation, 2 4th down situation last drive, no hesitation, everyone on the same page. so what happened to UH after June left.

Cannot compare the Red Raiders situation with ours. Their staff displayed a level of unconscious competency which most of ours are lacking. Furthermore, listen to Ruffin McNeil and he isn’t stutter stepping all over the place like Mack does which probably makes it easier for coaches and players to quickly understand what he is saying.

Wasn’t anyone paying attention when JJ was game planning and calling plays.

The ones who were AND putting in long hours like Reinebold and Kajiyama are no longer there. Also can’t blame those current assistants who were not here under Jones. Easy to deduce where the real problem resides BUT the head coach sadly did not make any changes. I am already on record that this will be his undoing.

With the athletic budget at stake, we need to do something. UH basketball should be a source of profit for the dept., but it is not.

Doing something proactive is not the Hawaii way. We need to wait until the poop hits the fan before action takes place. By then, the damage has been done and it takes much more time, effort and money to get back to where we were supposed to be. Then just as you think you are heading towards the next higher plateau, the cycle starts all over again as complacency sets in.

Losing is one thing, but how we are losing is another. I don’t like the way we play and the way we lose.

Not much different with UH football when it comes to playing against the better teams. People keep bringing up the Navy win as if to make a point but seem to forget that even little old me gave UH more than a fighting chance to win that game (and I gave the reasons why; the main ones being we had more talent and we matched up physically where Navy cannot leverage their smaller size and using technique like they do against larger players).

However, when we are one or more of the following: physically outmatched, out talented, out coached, we sure show where we actually stand by being run over and out of the game by half time. Look at how well Navy played against bigger and better teams like tOSU and Missouri. Had UH played either of those teams this year, they would have pancaked us just like Boise, Fresno, and Wisconsin because one key thing we are missing when playing larger and more talent laden squads is the precision execution both on the field and on the sidelines when that really matters against those better equipped teams.

Without needing to see who we end up actually signing and what happens in fall and summer camp, a rebuilding USC will still cream a McMackin/Lee/Miano coached UH by at least 4 TD’s. Army will be like Navy where we have more talent and match up physically where we should win, and even though Colorado is down, I still see Dan Hawkins outcoaching our staff and putting together a better overall gameplan. Charleston Southern should be a gimme game but it won’t be as massive a blowout like in 2007. As far as the WAC schedule goes, it will be dependent on how well UH is executing on both sides of the ball during these first four games. If it is anything similar to these past two seasons, its easy to see us being around .500 in conference play (two guaranteed losses to Boise and Fresno, toss up games with Idaho, LaTech, and Nevada, better than winning chance against NMSU, USU, and SJSU). Finally, UNLV with Bobby Hauck is not going to be a pushover game BUT we should still win.

Which leaves us with…. anything from a 9 win season to a similar barely under .500 record again. Anything under 8 wins during the regular 2010 season should be considered a bust and require the dismissal of both coordinators because doing anything but that says we are okay with being mediocre. In the event we do not again go bowling or just barely make it in 2010, the AD needs to put this coaching staff on notice and also specifically define performance expectations like he did with Nash in terms of actual wins for 2011.

UH football won’t be able to hold up the UH athletic fort forever especially with the way it is going because there comes a point where those like myself who will stop donating anymore money AND stop renewing season tickets.

please don’t delete me for stating my humble opposing minority opinions on this blog…

I tune into the WB for the results of the latest drawing. There it is…Wafan wins!

I slowly trudge my way back to my room. I’m thinking, dang this is gonna be a new decade for some lucky people, but not me.

    Tsigh...Blindside…the sequel.

So gmahoney, Zorn got the boot! Hmmm…maybe there’s a chance for Colt to get outta Dodge. No sense playing for a team with no O-line to protect you.

ST ~ I noticed your J-E-T-S team do their *Senior* walk around the stadium thanking their fans. Class act after a very convincing win over the team in the Orange tiger suits.
