Sudden change

In a quick turnaround, the Warriors will be back practicing this morning, 13 hours after the conclusion of yesterday’s extended first practice. This time, they will be at the Ching complex.

From the first day:

• The quarterbacks each wore a knee brace on their plant leg. While it was a bulky adjustment, head coach Norm Chow reminded them that Tom Brady and Carson Palmer now wear braces after suffering season-ending injuries in the past.

• Instead of captains, Chow polled the players and created a “leadership council.” The council consists of 11 leaders, including seniors Paipai Falemalu, Geordon Hanahano, Haku Correa and Miah Ostrowski. David Graves is one of four juniors on the council.

• Every detail is important. There was a brief tutorial on the exact distance (5 yards) the huddle should be from the line of scrimmage.

• A referee will be part of every practice. Even zebras need workouts.

• There isn’t a depth chart, but there is. When the coaches yelled out, “second team,” it wasn’t by random participation. It will all get sorted out as spring ball progresses, but when it came to team reps, Graves or Cayman Shutter was the quarterback.

I love the reports from practice!

  3. Garret March 21, 2012 4:55 am

It is a good idea for the QBs to wear knee braces–I’m glad UH can afford that.

Having the refs there at every practice will help reduce mistakes.

    Jm:

From yesterday, it actually was another schedule conflict — a track meet — that forced the Warrior Bowl to go from Saturday to Friday.

  5. Garret March 21, 2012 4:56 am

Colt is competing with 3 QBs for the backup QB job.

The Roughriders signed import quarterbacks Levi Brown and Matt Johnson, who join recently added imports Colt Brennan and Drew Willy. Those four rookie quarterbacks will vie for backup positions when training camp opens in late May.

A track meet disrupted the Warriors spring schedule? UH needs to do a better job of coordinating things and the football team needs to have priority to set up their schedule how the coaches want it.

  8. Garret March 21, 2012 5:00 am

    One more tweet.

Basic problem for WAC (current and future) is that there aren’t enough schools in west that want to play FBS under current financial demands

  9. Garret March 21, 2012 5:02 am

It is good to know that if the conferences merge then the MWC and CUSA will be able to keep their NCAA basketball money. UH won’t see any of that money, but at least the money won’t be given back.

I’ve checked with a handful of sources in the past 10 days, and the consensus is that we’ll know the details of the MWC/CUSA merger within the next month.

    And it will be a merger — a full-blown, one-league-folded-into-another merger.

Based on my admittedly rudimentary understanding of the NCAA’s revenue-distribution model, the two leagues must merge in order for the schools to get the units (i.e., money) they’re owed from past participation in the NCAA Tournament.

But there’s a scenario … an entirely plausible scenario … in which more teams leave the Sun Belt and WAC for the MWC/CUSA superconference than can adequately be replaced in a reasonable amount of time.

At that point, dozens of scholarship athletes at dozens of FBS schools could be faced with an uncertain future — all because ESPN (or any other network) determined that a 22-team MWC/CUSA super-conference was preferable to a 16/18-team league.

Agree on the lack of FBS football-playing schools.

But the alliance better be careful about adding too many members. The BCS can view it as a subdivision, making it even harder for alliance members to go to big payout bowls.

  11. whitey March 21, 2012 5:14 am

sometimes it is very sad to see how football has become a corporate sport and not a collegiate sport. the greed of a few are killing the sport which each school should have the privilege of playing. very few report how corporate college football is destroying collegiate sports.

  12. whitey March 21, 2012 5:17 am

but many report how corporate america is not helping the economy.

  13. whitey March 21, 2012 5:18 am

    ST,

I agree. In fact, I even read yesterday that the higher-paying non-BCS bowls may be leaving the alliance. For example, the Liberty Bowl is currently the highest paying MWC or CUSA bowl game (I think $1.7 mil for the CUSA school), but apparently Memphis got the Liberty Bowl to agree to be a Big East bowl as part of their application to join the Big East.

Low paying bowl games like the Hawaii Bowl result in all teams that have to travel actually LOSING money. Right now the Hawaii Bowl only exists because ESPN wants a low-paid game to show early in the bowl season and CUSA is happy with the exposure and agrees to lose over $500k in sending a team. Can the Sun Belt, MAC, or WAC afford to lose that type of money after CUSA is merged with the MWC? None of the big conferences will be happy with losing $500k+ on the Hawaii Bowl when their current lowest paying bowls pay over $1 mil and are cheaper to travel to.

    whitey,

I do not disagree with you. But if we look at root causes, we see that almost every D-IA school was losing millions on athletics after they were in adherence with Title IX. Title IX is great and should be the rule I believe, but all of the women’s sports that were added lose money and nobody is covering those losses for the schools. So, TV deals were found that make some schools a lot of money–instead of taking money away from Academics, schools like Texas give $5 mil to $15 mil per year to the Academic side to improve education for everyone else at the school.

If you are a public University and budget cuts are requiring you to cut Academic programs, and Title IX turned your Athletic Department into a money drain that would require more cuts, don’t you have a responsibility to try to get more outside money for your Athletic Department so that you don’t have to drain the Academic side? Cold hard facts are that schools are getting less taxpayer money and they need money to fund their Athletic Departments.

Schools are scrambling to generate enough money to at least break even on Athletics. Some schools that people care enough about to watch on TV are making big profits right now. Other schools that people don’t want to bother watching on TV are seeing themselves left behind. Taking money away from the schools that generate money to give to schools that cannot sure doesn’t sound like Capitalism.

  20. whitey March 21, 2012 5:59 am

Garret, but then again when our WAC teams cannot meet their ticket allocations for the selected bowls, why should the conference be penalized? Logically, if a team cannot meet their ticket allocations the first time, they should be on suspension notice that if it occurs again in the future, irregardless of time, they will be ineligible for bowl games. You may lose members, but they are not doing their job as members.

ST – so are you suggesting that the track meet should be re-scheduled? And disrupt the travel plans for all the teams that need to fly to Hawaii? It’s track season, and having home meets allows the team to stay here and have the home field advantage. Sounds to me, that the football coaches could have read the calendar better and not originally scheduled practice at the Ching Complex on a day when a meet was scheduled.

  30. Bryson March 21, 2012 6:43 am

I really liked the intensity I saw on the practice field yesterday and I only saw it on the news I can only imagine how intense it was being there live and in person…I can only imagine what the recruits who will be here in the fall are thinking…Hopefully this intensity will translate well into the games this season…

  38. jkjones March 21, 2012 7:09 am

practice tempo or intensity are important to coach chow’s method of instilling discipline.

Of course, its byproduct is focus and execution.

To be sure, there are other moving parts that make it work, such as talent, injuries, coaching and team chemistry. Still, if warrior players buy into it, the transition could be seamless. Easier said than done…we shall see.

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid March 21, 2012 7:09 am

    Hi Tom,

We purchase the knee braces from a local company, Orthopedic Care Hawaii because they are able to custom fit the braces for the boys. They type of knee brace we get is the Defiance III custom knee brace from DonJoy LLC. I have the link to their website below.

caught the last 10-15 min of practice and for the first time, i actually seen the guys stretching out after practice instead of just walking back to the locker rooms like in the past. the one word that comes to my mind about spring camp so far is precision. everything is run so precisely and while not all the players are in the physical condition coach chow expects of them, i’m sure they will get there with a very regimented off-season program under heffernan.

everyone that has mentioned the pace of practice being upbeat/brisk is massively understating it. by the end of practice there were players, literally too exhausted to stand on their own, much less do up/downs with the rest of the offense. i was blown away. like al mentioned many times before, will not be surprised to see guys leaving because they simply cannot handle the new regime’s style of football. shape up or ship out.

one last note… i was shocked at how the ching field looked. very run down with black areas and the color fading. is it normal for the field to be worn out this quickly?

  53. al March 21, 2012 8:55 am

besides seeing who the final five olinemen are, which will take us through the fall camps.

perhaps the most heated competition will be for the two deep receivers’ positions. the stock pile that it is, is loaded with talented young men.

what with the likes of billy ray stutzmann, miah ostrowski, trevor davis, chris gant, allen sampson, justin clapp, and scott harding the front runners…its gonna be quite a battle.

  54. cheepono March 21, 2012 8:58 am

    congrats to samson! much deserved!

We ought to see more rotation by the X (singleside/wideout) and Z (slot) positions.

Unlike in years heretofore under the RNS system.

The fact that Clapp, Miah, Sampson and Harding are auditioning to play both positions speaks of shuffling personnel liberally for play calling or special packages.

Coach Chow’s initial evaluation of our receiving corp, with the exception of the new TE position was FAVORABLE. Prolly the reason he went for only one receiver in his first recruiting class (John Ursua), despite anticipating Ursua to go on a 2-year Mormon mission.

    Re: SCHEDULING CONFLICT.

In the world of objectivity and FAIRNESS. The UH Track team is in THEIR competitive season.

UH football is in their training season.

I don’t give a crap about how much flack I get for this, but hey, fact is fact. Football pushes the money, but other sports cannot be treated like UNWANTED bastards just because some people think they aren’t worthy of any kind of consideration.

Besides, what is wrong with the 6pm Friday night timeslot for the Warrior Bowl? It’s a Friday and people should be off work by then to go by and see it in full.

  68. jkjones March 21, 2012 9:57 am

Justin Clapp, if he stays healthy, is likely to be Chow’s bread n butter receiver.

Clapp’s size and assests makes him valued in Chow’s pro-set where he is contantly tweaking to tilt advantage to his lineup….hence, Clapp can lineup next to the TE as a slot, draw LB coverage and create an instant mismatch on deep patterns or he can go to the outside and use his height on the inside against single cover from a shorter CB. Either position he gains an advantage.

  69. homey ℞ March 21, 2012 10:07 am

Lo and Behold that I was cited for “Improper Display” 👿

They are NOT knee braces. They, like the ones the oline wear, are nothing more than bumper guards. I wish I had been wearing one when I recovered a fumble in high school and the entire world fell on my out stretched leg (and blew my knee out)..Paying the price now with second knee replacement scheduled next week.

Update on BY-Who’s Spring ball. Lots of familiar names.

Interesting comment from their Trainer Kevin Morris

“Like I said at beginning of year: the NCAA shows twice as many injuries in spring ball than during fall football season. So, I don’t know why. Is it the intensity? Is it because we don’t have a game to play? We are trying to find the facts.”

  93. jkjones March 21, 2012 12:15 pm

#94,slezi. i wouldnt even guess about cory placebar. he will have to seperate himself from the pack. the X, Z positions are really crowded. especially the slot.

talk about slot/Z: stuzz, gant, clay, clapp, miah, sampson and harding–all vying for one position.

clapp, stuzz and miah–all experienced as starters. sampson with game experience and harding on a steep learning curve. gant, a heralded juco all-american. this is one position coach chow inherited that is loaded. whomever gets injured, may lose their glove.

  94. Bigislandkurt March 21, 2012 12:37 pm

I’m sure Coach Chow and lee will draw up plays to get the ball to the best players. Although it appears that many are “competing” for one or two positions, I’m sure Chow has a platoon plan in action for all skill positions except QB.

    BIK

  95. Garret March 21, 2012 12:53 pm

    Kevin,

I am sorry that you thought my post was disrespectful. Here is what I was thinking when I wrote my post, though I admit I should have elaborated more in my post.

    1. UH does a bad job of coordinating things if the football coaches plan out their Spring schedule without knowing that there was a track meet planned for that date. There should be a master calendar so that these types of conflicts to not happen for ANY SPORT.

    2. I was NOT suggesting that the previously scheduled track meet be canceled, no sport should just bump another sport like that. I never said that but it sounds like you think that is what I meant.

    3. In the future, when the coaches come up with their schedule for Spring Football, they need to reserve things on the master calendar to avoid conflicting with any other event. There is some flexibility in the schedule (for example, one weekend the football team will be on Maui), so *every* sport should be able to be accommodated without a problem.

    4. For the conflict to be discovered after the schedule had been made is bad because that means that the coaches had their plan disrupted. If they had known about the conflict beforehand, the plan would have taken the track meet into account…that is FAR better than learning about the conflict after making the schedule, I hope you can agree with that.

    5. UHAD needs the football team to succeed for its long-term viability. Far too many Hawaii fans don’t show up at Aloha Stadium when the team loses. Far too many don’t renew season tickets when the team loses. For its long-term financial health, UHAD needs the football team to generate the revenue needed. Therefore, anything that hurts the program THAT CAN BE AVOIDED should be avoided.

Is it disrespectful to want ALL sports teams to be able to avoid facility conflicts? For wanting what is best for the football team while NOT harming any other sport? If you honestly think that I don’t value the non-football sports at UH then you haven’t been paying attention since I’ve been for the entire 5+ years that ST has had a blog.

  96. Couch potato March 21, 2012 12:58 pm

that was a lot of thinking for so little written in the original post. 😆

  97. mikey March 21, 2012 1:13 pm

Was standing next to great Nate Ilaoa watching practice yesterday, as he still has the record of most receptions by a RB for Season and Career; and asked him how he would like to be on this roster with FB and a TE blocking. He just turned and Smiled.

Cheepono : Do you know any Gardener who would like to volunteer their time to take care of the field? Or anyone?

  99. Kevin March 21, 2012 1:14 pm

    Garret,

Perhaps you should have said how does moving the spring game ONE day earlier effect the football program in a negative way that impacts the progress of the players and coaches.

    Your comment as is:

    <blockquoteGarret:

    March 21st, 2012 at 4:57 am

A track meet disrupted the Warriors spring schedule? UH needs to do a better job of coordinating things and the football team needs to have priority to set up their schedule how the coaches want it.

Only indicates to me and readers that you believe this move in schedule is a detrimental disadvantage to UH football and the fact that you emphasize PRIORITY of football during the spring over a current spring sport that had their schedules done prior (because it is their season) was something that truly bothered me.

The bolded portion of your comment in relation to the subject matter is as simple as it is.

Several of us have devoted a lot of our personal income and time in supporting a non-revenue sport and at the same time some of us still appreciate and understand’s football’s role. In fact, last week some of us had the pleasure of conversing with some of the current staff in a very casual manner thus gaining a lot of respect for our new coaches, plus some of us are still UH football season ticket holders.

The UH football program DOES have MANY MANY MANY advantages over all sports as it is due to it’s revenue generating income, but your comment, in it’s simplicity only fuels a disregard for other programs that have done nothing wrong and have made numerous sacrifices to put on a competitive program despite their non-revenue status to tow the line on the field of competition and in the checkbook for all of UHAD with little to ZERO administrative support.

If you think back and don’t believe that this one day change is a negative impact for the football program then your original comment doesn’t stand firm on anything other than your belief, as is the beliefs of MANY others, that UH football should take precedence over all sports all year around regardless of schedules.

Again, your original comment is short and to the point and I get it. Your “retraction” of sorts only mentions other sports now, but it doesn’t take much to read your original comment in relation to why the spring game is being moved back to tell me what you truly think.

I have been reading your comments for YEARS now. So much so that I know you are one to NOT confuse his words.

So again, I stand by my original and personal belief of what your original comment meant in my eyes.

  100. al March 21, 2012 1:15 pm

the track meet came first and so the spring game was scheduled around it.

    end of story.

    …nuff said.

  101. mikey March 21, 2012 1:16 pm

With 15 players on receivers position there’s only one spot left. As the First seven is already set in my book. Guess that’s why Coach Chow only got Ursua this year.

  102. mikey March 21, 2012 1:18 pm

    On earlier Post:

Title IX is great for Women’s sports and kept adding programs that do not make any money to the program, drains funds for other non-review program including Academics.

More the reason to change to equal athletic program for each side of men’s and women’s program and not as a whole total of scholarship available.

Men’s baseball = Women’s softball, basketball for basketball, track for track, volleyball for volleyball, etc.

As many school are adding Women’s sand volleyball teams this year, Men’s should have equal opportunity to hold sand volleyball team as well.

  103. A-House March 21, 2012 1:19 pm

    all you soccer fans, etc:

why does Coach Nagamine sign shorter players? most are in the 5’2″ – 5/7″ range. faster? more skillful defender, ball handler, striker (what ever this means)? even the goal keeper is less than 6′.

  104. kev-1 March 21, 2012 1:24 pm

what came first, the track meet or the football practice? Isn’t that the question of all time? Who’s the chicken and who’s the egg?

  105. al March 21, 2012 1:24 pm

ahouse…because they go to the bigger programs is why.

    go figure.

maybe we need to bet that next year we will have at least one six footer.

    haha.

  106. mikey March 21, 2012 1:24 pm

Even the Women’s basketball All-Star roster the other day on SA saw mostly under 6′.

A-House, Coach Nagamine stepped up this year and recruited taller players. last player she signed is 5’10”.

btw, Japan women won the last soccer world cup. not too many tall ones on that team.

  113. A-House March 21, 2012 1:34 pm

every time I hear of Title IX, I am reminded what Patsy Mink called out to us that day at Ala Moana Park in 1962.

we were in support of Pres Kennedy on nuclear arms and marched behind the protesters from UH to Ala Moana.

In her remarks, she called us, oh yes I remember now, “the misguided few”. Never voted for her after that.

  114. mikey March 21, 2012 1:34 pm

Oh I thought you were talking about the grass practice field from yesterday.

  115. mikey March 21, 2012 1:38 pm

That’s why we all love watching upset games when underdog with much less Wins.

  116. mikey March 21, 2012 1:41 pm

I have to admit that I bet on Idaho to Win at WAC Tournament.

When underdog UH won without Zane.

I should have bet on New Mexico State too, then maybe UH would have Won!

  117. cheepono March 21, 2012 1:42 pm

the grass practice field is most likely maintained by the UH landscaping department. was surprised that ching field looked run down considering it’s only been in for a couple years.

in any case, hopefully when the bid went out, the company that got awarded the ching field contract also are on the hook for maintenance.

  118. Kevin March 21, 2012 1:43 pm

Everytime I hear “TITLE IX”, I keep thinking about the numerous academic all conference student-athletes that UH can claim in addition to their male counterparts on the same level.

I also think about the mainland Wahine that have decided Hawaii is now their home and are giving back to it via their chosen profession as a result of the education they received at UH Manoa because they were able to participate in a sport and receive a scholarship for it.

  119. al March 21, 2012 1:50 pm

ahouse…that’s not a reasonable bet. first of all, we never get 5* kids out here in any sport. secondly, who rates soccer player?

  125. manoa March 21, 2012 2:13 pm

I can’t think of many who would repeal Title IX– and no Women’s Volleyball or Softball as fewer women will pursue sports to play at the college level.

The real problem is that many schools cannot afford to support a football team with 85 scholarships. Cut the Scholarships back to 70 for everyone, and everything gets a lot more manageable and scholarships can even be shared like they do with Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Volleyball.

Actually, I recall hearing that the field turf needs to be “combed” on a regular basis to keep the blades looking good and the infill down below. That was awhile ago and I guess now there are several different grades of the stuff so I’m not really sure if the maintenence requirements are different as well.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii’s Mike Prickett, an internationally acclaimed underwater cinematographer from Oahu’s North Shore, has been partially paralyzed following a diving accident that occurred during a commercial filming job in Tahiti.

  136. Lanaiboy March 21, 2012 4:15 pm

New Mexico State upset Arizona in softball 9-5 today. The score is presently tied at 1-1 in the second half of the doubleheader. Could be a sweep, big wins for the WAC. Three WAC teams could give the Wahine problems, San Jose State, Fresno State, and New Mexico State. An interesting conference season.

  137. madeinhawaii March 21, 2012 4:17 pm

Photography sounds like a cushy, fun job, but it can be very demanding. Sometimes you gotta wade in some very deep waters… other times, you find yourself hanging off the edge of a cliff or dangling off of a limb. Just because you want that shot that nobody else has.

  138. Steve March 21, 2012 4:28 pm

Lanaiboy (#149) – Do not forget about BYU, only because the Wahine play them at BYU.

  139. Steve March 21, 2012 4:31 pm

Lanaiboy, the first 9 conference games, will say alot in how the Wahine’s do in the conference. With San Jose St, New Mexico St, and BYU, the first 3 conference teams they play.

  140. Derrick March 21, 2012 4:36 pm

I think the wahine need to blow out more opponents. They need more of that or should I say clutch hitting. We have good pitching, but only if they get the outs. Hey remember Wonderbread? I think Peyton Manning is a good choice for the Broncos but only if he has receivers to throw the ball to and if they can win games. Coach Gib needs at least three years to see what he can do. I think Shaq is the future if he can be a part of the offense. Remember Big League Chew?

  141. Derek March 21, 2012 4:59 pm

Having taller players in soccer is an asset, IF, the player is a good player, but it is definitelly not required. The main qualities you look for in a soccer player is ball skills, both with the feet, head, and antcipation. You want speed and quickness too. Lionel Messi the best player in the world is 5’7″. He has all of these qualities in abundance, and then some.

In soccer, positioning is critical. Turn the wrong way could cost a game and a goal. My son played soccer for Mililani HS and as the years go by I have come to appreciate the talent level of premiier soccer players. They make unbelievable plays and the coordination to play this world game is something to behold. I love football, basketball, baseball, but

of all the sports I appreciate soccer the most. It’s not the score that counts, it’s how the players play and how they handle the ball without using their hands. It’s not easy. I tried. Believe me, it is very difficult. I hope the Wahine will have a better season this coming year. Good luck to me. Right now, I would rather watch the Wahine soccer over the Wahine basketball. That’s just the way it is.

  142. Steve March 21, 2012 5:13 pm

Derek, I do not know to much about soccer, but watching the Wahine, it looked like the only time height came into play was with headers. The Wahine seemed to be at a disadvantage there. Your comments would be appreciated.

  144. Lanaiboy March 21, 2012 5:40 pm

Re: 152. Yep, I forgot about BYU, mainly because they play in the WAC for only this season. They had a formidable schedule and did reasonably well. If the Wahine do not start hitting again, they will lose some pitching duels in conference play. Hawaii has one of the best pitching duos in the collegiate softball, but you need at least a few runs to win.

  145. Lanaiboy March 21, 2012 5:57 pm

The reason men volleyball share scholarships is because they only have 4.5 to give; whereas, the women’s volleyball program hands out 12 scholarships per year—definitely no sharing of scholarships in D1 women’s volleyball.

I’d say the sharing of scholarships would be with men’s golf, men’s tennis, men’s volleyball, and possibly men’s swimming and diving. The athletes on the men’s volleyball team, with its larger roster as compared to golf and tennis gets to foot a larger share for their schooling. For men’s baseball, basketball, and football you’re either on full scholarship or a walk-on.

As for the women, like football and men’s baseball/basketball and football, you’re either on a full ride or a walk-on.

    Breakdown of scholarships at UH

    Men’s Sports:

    Baseball 11.7

    Men’s Basketball 13

    Football 85

    Men’s Golf 4.5

    Men’s Swimming 9.9

    Men’s Tennis 4.5

    Men’s Volleyball 4.5

    Men = 133.1 scholarships

    Women’s Sports:

    Women’s Basketball 15

    Women’s Cross Country 18

    Women’s Golf 6

    Women’s Soccer 14

    Softball 12

    Women’s Swimming 14

    Women’s Tennis 8

    Women’s Track and Field 18

    Women’s Volleyball 12

    Sand Volleyball 3

    Women = 120 scholarships

Women’s Sand Volleyball: UH can offer a maximum of six equivalency scholarships for the sand team, beginning with a maximum of three in 2012 and adding one in each of the subsequent three years for a total of six.

  156. whitey March 21, 2012 8:24 pm

seasider, thanks, but 18 for cross country, 14 for soccer, and softball gets only 12. Something sure doen’s look right. I think the women sports which potentially generates funds (bb, vb, and possibly sb) should get all the necessary scholies they need. I can see if the other women sports were winning championships or producing national qualifiers, but right now don’t see the need for that many scholies for their sports.

  157. whitey March 21, 2012 8:27 pm

personally, women vb should get 18 and cross country 12 or less.

  158. el burro sabio March 21, 2012 8:40 pm

Are the track and cross country scholarships counted twice?

18 volleyball scholarships would allow the top teams to hoard players like the 95 in football used to be.

el burro, i don’t know the rules or how scholies are set for the women sports, but if they could set their own priorities, vb would get much more than cross county or soccer. as far as hoarding, maybe could be problema, but i’d rather see uh spend money on winning programs and not just accommodate sports.

  160. tom mui March 21, 2012 9:30 pm

    AL – thanks!

  161. el burro sabio March 21, 2012 9:34 pm

Whitey, if there are 18 scholarships in volleyball, Shoji won’t be making money because he’ll be spending $175 to $200,000 more on scholarships and he won’t have a winning program because he’s going to lose girls to other schools. 25 years ago he would be taking girls from other schools, now it’s going to be the other way around.

Besides, scholarship limits and whether those scholarships have to be given to one student or can be split up among two or more, are set by the NCAA. Moot point.

  162. whitey March 21, 2012 9:52 pm

el burro, undertand what you are saying, but j crosan was a walk on for uh. WALK-ON????

  163. Stephen Tsai March 21, 2012 9:53 pm

I just think there should be more than 4.5 scholarship for men’s volleyball.

  164. madeinhawaii March 21, 2012 9:58 pm

    Off topic…

I’m surprised the Star-Advertiser has made this Dengue mosquito article a “must have subscription” type article. I would think this should be exempted as it could save lives.

  165. Stephen Tsai March 21, 2012 9:59 pm

    Answer to an earlier query:

No, Waylon Lolotai is from Colorado, not Kahuku.

He was recruited by Cal Lee with the understanding he would go on a church mission.

Because he had a late birthday, his mission actually covered three years. He was recruited as a linebacker. Then he became a defensive end. Then an offensive lineman. And now a tight end.

  166. jm2375 March 21, 2012 10:50 pm

I too, believe, men’s volleyball should have more than 4.5 scholarships. IIRC, I heard (read) Charlie Wade state that he was learning the art of dividing scholarships from Trapasso, so baseball has divisible scholarships. Don’t think women’s volleyball scholarships are divisible.

Isn’t there a hierarchy in scholarships? Basketball trumps volleyball, football trumps basketball, etc, etc…

  167. Stephen Tsai March 21, 2012 10:55 pm

I think Charlie is really, really hoping that J.P. Marks can make it as a kicker.

  168. jm2375 March 21, 2012 11:15 pm

    ST – 10:55 blog clock – hahahahahaha…

  169. al March 22, 2012 12:49 am

only men’s football and basketball hand out full rides or none at all.

all of the other sports, including baseball may divide scholarships any way they want it.

women’s sports are full rides as i understand it.

it is the ncaa that determines how many scholarships are available for each sport.

the reason why women’s soccer has more scholies than softball is probably determined by the number of players that are on the field of play.

    soccer = 11

    softball = 9

i believe the case for volleyball could be that it is typically a revenue generating sport like basketball.

  170. al March 22, 2012 12:49 am

that was for women’s volleyball and basketball.

  171. al March 22, 2012 12:54 am

many walk-ons, partially funded scholarship players as well are eligible for grants, tuition assistance programs, and other qualifying aid that are academically based.

in this day and age, grants, aid, and scholastic scholarships could be had by most students today.
