Still at it

The offseason conditioning program is actually voluntary, but two on-the-mend players — slotback/running back Samson Anguay and safety Kawika Borden — refuse to be sidelined.

While their teammates go through speed, agility and weight drills, Anguay and Borden perform exercises that do not impact their injuries. Anguay, who uses crutches, recently had arthroscopic surgery to clean his right knee. Borden is recovering from hernia surgery. Both should be ready for the Aug. 1 start of training camp.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Wishing Samson and Kawika the very best.

Is Beau Reilly working out now?

  7. jm2375 May 29, 2014 7:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Closed for a week? Say it ain’t so! Already starting the withdrawals…

  8. Lowtone123 May 29, 2014 7:45 am

ST, blog will be closed for a week? What am I going to do during work?

  9. Shoko May 29, 2014 7:46 am

Sounds like the blog host is going on a much needed vacation.

Wasn’t too familiar with hernias, but wondered what type of physical therapy one can engage in to speed up recovery. Apparently, there isn’t any other than rest and a good nutrition diet.

  10. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2014 7:47 am

    Beau Reilly is working out.
He’s been staying with a family friend since April.

  11. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2014 7:53 am

I really like those lime-green shoes. Maybe that should be the school colors.

  12. traitmanz May 29, 2014 7:55 am

    No new uniforms yet? shucks

  13. Musashi May 29, 2014 7:56 am

    Hi ST

What would be interesting to see a comparison of the UH Student-Athletes’ (Men and Women programs) GPA against the rest of the student body (excluding the Student-Athletes). And the percentage of time it takes to receive a bachelor’s degree between the Student-Athletes and the reset of the student body.

I bet the Student-Athletes will have a higher overall GPA and better graduation rate compared to the rest of the student athletes.

  14. NotNasti May 29, 2014 8:07 am

ST: Re: Lime green colors. YES! Almost like Oregon’s highlighter yellow uni’s. When we have a “green out,” if everyone wore highlighter green, it would really be impressive.

  15. traitmanz May 29, 2014 8:07 am

Sorry for bothering but did Cesar Fermin arive on campus yet?

  16. NorthShoreFan May 29, 2014 8:08 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos….bootiful day.

    Heal up Warriors!

One week!?!?!…maybe a daily guest blog host?….one week?!?!?!!

    starting withdrawal symptoms already!

  17. hossana May 29, 2014 8:22 am

It’s nice that every year we have these warriors working out in the off-season e.g. weight training, agility tests and runs, etc….but what they really need is the skill and adaptability to adjust to schemes on the field such that they can just AUTOMATICALLY REACT when playing offense or defense against opposing teams. That is where the downfall for the Rainbows lay……seems like they’re thinking too much…way too much..and by the time they react esp. on defense, geezus, the opposing team has gained 10 or 20 or 50 yds. etc…I know all of you will criticize me and say that part comes when practice resumes in the fall….that is so true ….waaay too true and that is why I blame the coaches for not coaching the team the right way…all of this off-season workouts are excellent, I repeat, are excellent, but if the coaches can’t coach the players, THEN WHAT’S THE USE……and that is where the downfall lays…im tired of reading about who bench presses the most or runs the fastest 40 or runs the best agility or jumps the highest….tired of those stats…..i want to see production on the field during game time….NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS…..right, ChowFun!!!

  18. jeezy33 May 29, 2014 8:51 am

    15. I doubt he’s coming. Hence the Mayo pick up. Mayo probably better anyway.

  19. oldtimer808 May 29, 2014 8:54 am

No one hurts more than the coaches and players when success does not materialize but I believe internally the program is on the right track. Coach Chow has made the necessary changes in discipline and commitment as student/athletes. We have the right coaches in place now so just be patient.

  20. jimmy the lock May 29, 2014 9:14 am

Hold on, hold on, most on here go weeks without sex and nary a complaint but the blog closes down for only a week and the jitters start. 😆

  21. hossanna is a clown May 29, 2014 9:15 am

My name is Hossanna and on post number 17, I typed A LOT of words but really didn’t say anything at all. However, I’d like to take this time to announce that I will be applying for the head coaching position for the University of Hawaii football team when norm chow gets fired. I feel that I am uniquely suited for this position through my years of experience watching football on tv, a few years playing in pop warner, and of course, posting on this blog.

    Thank you.

  22. hatakeman May 29, 2014 9:21 am

I don’t think there’s been a season where Samson Anguay has been injury free. I wish both he and Kawika full and speedy recovery.

  23. hawaiian May 29, 2014 9:30 am

UH should take advantage of setting up “satellite” camps on the mainland (actually not setting up these camps…but rather being guest coaches). Boise State trying to set them up in LA and Houston…fertile recruiting grounds! The SEC is upset that Penn State’s James Franklin is setting up these camps in SEC country (the South)…LOL!

  24. jimmy the lock May 29, 2014 9:30 am

    Here’s my 1 cent…that’s all I got right now.

All the players are automatically reacting and adjusting on every play whether on offense or defense. It’s those special players who have the innate ability to see and react to the subtleties and make the difficult look oh so easy.

Some say that a player like that is “always in the right spot”, “has God-given talent”, “supernatural”, “top notch athlete”, and so on. Things like that can’t be taught but can be enhanced by training, technique, repetition, and mental toughness. Well you get the gist of my one cent, therefore carry on as we slide into Friday.

  25. Rodney May 29, 2014 9:34 am

Lets get JJ back as coach and AD!!!Lol

  26. nutmegger May 29, 2014 9:35 am

    Oldtimer808 speaks wisdom.

Can’t ST leave the blog open so all can continue to comment?

We’ll miss his blog, but it is the camaraderie that will be lost for a week.

  27. Bryson May 29, 2014 9:35 am

Sounds like a certain DB isn’t Happy and may look into transferring….

  28. Fan May 29, 2014 9:52 am

17, 21…I think Hossana would be best suited for governor or perhaps president or even pope. Head coach at UH is much too modest a position.

  29. Inyoface May 29, 2014 10:28 am

    JJ will never come back.

  30. Andrew May 29, 2014 10:32 am

    29.

I wish people would stop hoping that he will come back already, it’s getting old.

  31. Shoko May 29, 2014 11:19 am

Don’t think UH can afford to hire JJ back anyway.

  32. Last Call May 29, 2014 11:27 am

    # 11 You can’t change the school colors unless it is approved by Jim Leahey.

Leahey didn’t approve of Ali Longo’s lime green libero jersey although it was extremely popular with the fans. Leahey never missed an opportunity to take cheap shots on air and refer to Longo as a traffic cone.

  33. Longo the Traffic Cone May 29, 2014 11:41 am

I was HONORED that Mr. Leahey made the comparison of Ali Longo with me. Not many people appreciate the role I play in public safety for those on the roads.

  38. Andrew May 29, 2014 12:27 pm

Does anyone know if there has been much comment on the two UH men’s bball assistant coaches leaving the program? I remember seeing it on the news but that’s about it.

  39. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2014 12:29 pm

    Traitmanz:
Cesar Fermin had to re-take a class. If all goes well, he should be here for the start of training camp on Aug. 1.

  40. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2014 12:31 pm

    Andrew:
Brian McInnis reported a couple of weeks ago that the two coaches were leaving the program. One of them already has found another job. The other will be staying to help with the camps, I believe. Assistant coaches’ contracts expire June 30.

“Two members of the Hawaii men’s basketball coaching staff are departing for the junior college ranks.

Assistant coach Scott Fisher has accepted the head coaching job at Ohlone College in Fremont, Calif., his hometown. Director of operations Chris McMillian has taken a full assistant job at the College of Southern Idaho.

Fisher, a UC Santa Barbara alumnus and a hall of famer as a player and coach in Australian basketball, joined Gib Arnold’s staff in 2010 as director of operations then was promoted to full assistant after a season. He handled team academics and oversaw the team’s big men.”

See Brian’s story on the SA website today.

  46. A-House May 29, 2014 1:56 pm

#40: coaches are jumping ship before it sinks? looks like BJ has to look if not already looking for an new MBB coach.

fans will never be truly happy with what they got

Lowtone123, thank you for your kind words. It’s not easy to do what I do every day. Other people, like the person who wrote post number 49, they have no aloha for us.

  51. st. anthony trojan May 29, 2014 2:42 pm

Yea # 50…those are the kind that will ‘run u over’ n leave u in the center of the next lane…bruised n hurt…only to be run over again by on coming traffic….be careful…very many mean spirited bloggers here…

  52. NotNasti May 29, 2014 2:44 pm

    50. May you be used as a batting tee for a five year old chopper. Just kidding, I have nothing but respect for traffic cones, although I have never seen a fluorescent green traffic cone.

Lowtone, I remember the lime green bb uni’s. I loved them. Jim Leahey is an old fuddy duddy. On Leahey & Leahey, all he does is grumble. GOM (grumpy old man).

  53. NotNasti May 29, 2014 2:45 pm

Flourescent green bb uni’s. How did I get lime green out of that?

  54. st. anthony trojan May 29, 2014 3:02 pm

HE HE #52 …what else can you use a ‘old bruised n broken’ cone for….after retirement ? ?

  55. SteveM May 29, 2014 3:14 pm

    RE: #43
    BigWave96744 — I would hold out for $1.4 million.
But it’s a slippery slope when the AD needs money and the fans want wins.

  56. Old School Dave May 29, 2014 3:15 pm

Concur, Nasti. Should be renamed “Leahey and Grumpy Old Leahey Show.”

  57. 1 May 29, 2014 6:05 pm

@#46 A-House: Coach Fisher situation may have some connection with Clint Eastwood’s ex-wife and Fisher’s ex-wife according to story I read awhile back. Believe he wants to be in California for that reason. Don’t think it has to do with BB situation.

anyone who follows collegiate sports will know that if you have a good staff…they will seek and leave for better opportunities. many a time the opportunity will seek you out.

that is the nature of the beast.

  60. markazulu May 29, 2014 11:55 pm

somebody inform mr ben jay about the alabama we could use the money.

  61. Ralph May 30, 2014 12:35 am

#62 I doubt BJ will seek out Alabama. Colorado at home 9/5, 9/12 Ohio State away, 9/26 Wisconsin away. If he were to add Alabama away, UH would have one of the toughest non conference schedule for 2015.

I’d like the idea of playing Alabama at Alabama, good for our program and our players to venture into a football hotbed. Take the money and live the experience.
