Honors for Ricketts, Iwata

Stephanie Ricketts and Jessica Iwata today were named to the West Region second team. Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association names the teams.

* * * * *

Oceanic Time Warner, which is set to take over production and distribution of UH sportscasts from K5, will conduct preliminary meetings today with potential on-air talent.

By the way, I suppose the phrase “stay tuned” is obsolete, just like “broken record” and “dialed in.”

* * * * *

There still will be adjustments because not all of the spring-semester grades are finalized. (Students still have some time to complete some projects.)

But for now, walk-on running back Joey Cadiz, cornerbacks Marcus Cooley and Terry Wilson, receiver Kana Silva, and kicker Kenton Chun have made the UH football team.

Cadiz, who has made a comeback from a serious knee injury; Wilson, who was on the bubble, and Chun, who was cut last year, all have been invited to training camp. Silva, the younger brother of former UH safety Mana Silva, and Cooley are among 15 players who will be added to the roster on the first day of the fall semester.

* * * * *

Quarterback Bryant Moniz and linebacker Corey Paredes will represent the Warriors at the WAC Football Media Preview July 28 in Las Vegas. At that time, Moniz is expected to be named the WAC’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

* * * * *

A very happy birthday to our Golden Throat, the musically gifted D1shima.

And birthday wishes to Peaches:

Baseball hasn’t won a WAC title since 1992, I remember the Murakami teams struggling in the 90’s and when Trap was hired, we all thought he’d turn things around sooner than later. Could this be the year where he guides the Bows to his first regular season title to cap off his WAC tournament title from 2010.

KK, hmmm, I think most people would check their email BEFORE they checked the Warrior Beat.

  48. Garret May 19, 2011 7:58 am

It is interesting to see what the Big 10 is proposing. It has been widely documented that an Athletic Scholarship doesn’t cover all of the expenses the student-athletes have. Increasing the stipend $3000 per year could help to cover that…but how many schools could afford to do that for all athletes?

The fact is that scholarships don’t cover all expenses, I’ve even heard UH athletes talking about this. People (even on this blog) have been calling for the stipends to be increased. Schools with the huge TV contracts can afford to do this…but that would leave a *huge* gap between the haves and have-nots.

Some people have been saying this should only be for football and basketball because they bring in revenue, but I think it has to apply to *all* scholarship athletes. Could UH afford that?

An athletic scholarship pays for tuition, fees, room and board and books. But it doesn’t cover such items as transportation, clothing and other living expenses — the so-called full cost of attendance. Studies have suggested that there’s a gap of about $3,000 per player between the scholarship allotment and the cost of attendance.

There have been calls to close that gap. In 2003, former NCAA president Myles Brand publicly favored a proposal to use men’s basketball tournament funds to give athletes more pay. Current NCAA boss Mark Emmert has come out in support of the same idea and brought the issue up at the NCAA’s April board meeting.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/26811/big-ten-looks-at-more-pay-for-athletes

  49. Garret May 19, 2011 7:59 am

“Forty years ago, you had a scholarship plus $15 a month laundry money,” Delany said. “Today, you have the same scholarship, but not with the $15 laundry money.

  50. Garret May 19, 2011 8:02 am

This would cost UH about $1 mil per year. It wouldn’t kill UH’s budget I guess and would be good for the athletes, but schools like NMSU that are struggling to keep their Athletic Department afloat would really be hurt.

  51. mctruck May 19, 2011 8:03 am

instead of Stay Tuned…..howz about, ‘try-wait?”

  53. Garret May 19, 2011 8:11 am

BYU tidbits. I hope that they aren’t filling up their schedule with AQ schools and that they get that long-term deal done with UH.

Among the scheduling news to come, the Cougars appear set to face multiple Big Ten programs, a collection of teams that the Cougars have rarely faced, except in the occasional bowl in years gone by.

As has been rumored for a while now, it does appear as if BYU is close to announcing a three-game series with Wisconsin and Nebraska. Both series will reportedly include a game in each team’s home stadium, as well as at a neutral site. The biggest challenge in finalizing these deals has been the arrangement of neutral site locations.

Deep Shades of Blue has also learned that a similar series is in the works with Penn State. According to sources close to the program, BYU has been able to leverage the long-time friendship between LaVell Edwards and Joe Paterno in order to rekindle their series from the early 1990′s.

Also according to inside sources, another home-and-home series is in the works with USC, while the Trojan’s crosstown rival, UCLA, has approached BYU about starting up another set of games.

In recent days a rumor has also surfaced regarding BYU potentially joining the Big East Conference. Deep Shades of Blue has learned that the conference did indeed contact BYU about becoming a football-only member, but that the proposal was turned down by the BYU administration.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Feliz Cumpleanos to d1, Peaches & Stutz Sr!

Congrats to the walk-ons joining the team.

What percentage of other undergrad students get stipends? I’m sure it’s pretty low.

The BIG EAST is starting to sound like the WAC EAST. Way too spread out. If BYWho joins, that’ll make it a 3-time zone conference.

  55. NCAA May 19, 2011 8:40 am

  73. Jun Tao May 19, 2011 10:55 am

is there a chance that Neil Everett try’s out for the broadcast? He would be my pick. UH needs to move on with a new voice/personality. I think he is old enough, yet young enough to fuse the generation gap.

  74. Loa May 19, 2011 10:56 am

    morning gang!

    Happy Birthday d1

  75. HawaiiMongoose May 19, 2011 10:56 am

Garret, I’m hoping UH will be able to schedule BYU for season-ending home games the first weekend in December every other year (with return games in Provo earlier in the season). The Big 10 and Pac 12 will be playing conference championship games that weekend, so BYU typically won’t have better options.

  76. Loa May 19, 2011 10:58 am

    Congrats Bryant! … represent! …

  77. gigi-hawaii May 19, 2011 11:04 am

    nice pic of Peaches.

  78. gigi-hawaii May 19, 2011 11:13 am

Oceanic should hire Kanoa — which means that he would have to resign from Channel 2 News.

Then, they should hire Papa as color commentator.

I can’t tell you how many times hubby yelled at the TV when Papa made a mistake. This arrangement would fix the problem.

  79. Bulla May 19, 2011 11:56 am

happy happy bdays to bday kids, d1, peaches, and papa stutz…..

    Were they ever reunited?

Because that would feel so good.

  90. Stephen Tsai May 19, 2011 2:08 pm

Don’t think that Neil Everett would come back.

But a few years ago, Larry Beil was really angling for the job.

  91. Hawaiianbod May 19, 2011 2:21 pm

i also remember Ashford and Simpson.

    They were Solid…Solid as a Rock 🙂

  92. Hawaiianbod May 19, 2011 2:25 pm

yeah, Neil Everett has a great gig and is making some ‘good coin’.

As for Larry Beil , i guess ‘Aloha DOES mean Goodbye’. 🙂

  93. ai-eee-soos May 19, 2011 2:35 pm

  103. Kazz May 19, 2011 3:55 pm

    NCAA:

    May 19th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

kawika49, and put Russel Yamanoha at the concession stands looking for some cheap eats.

At Aloha Stadium? With their prices?

Change the title of the show to:

    “Over Priced Eats”

  104. Kazz May 19, 2011 3:58 pm

I RESPECT Jim Leahey. I felt lucky to have spoken with him a few times about UH sports.

But it will be what it will be.

Time for NEW blood and I don’t mind Oc16 keeping it in the family. Kanoa is stepping up and looks to be the MOST favorable if there was a local broadcaster that could move on to something like ESPN ala “Braddah Neil”.

  105. Kazz May 19, 2011 4:02 pm

Honestly speaking, if people talk about UH going after a younger audience, then the commentary should match.

The more and more Jim Leahey comments negatively on things like tattoos on players or a “unique” hairstyle displayed by a student-athlete the more and more DISCONNECTED the voice of UH athletics becomes.

Again, if people think I do not respect Jim Leahey, then you don’t know me. I respect the man, but it is what it is.

Oceanic will provide a BETTER quality television product for UH sports and we need everything that is a part of it to catch up as well to keep the production value of the television product at the highest level we can attain.

  106. Kazz May 19, 2011 4:12 pm

I remember several instances where the commentary should have been relegated to the “Conservative Alliance of America” (if there is such a group with that name, but you get the picture).

I remember when Chris McLaughlin was calling a Warrior volleyball game several years ago and then freshman MB Jarrod Lofy had a mohawk. McLaughlin spent several minutes dissecting how this was “disrespectful” and “selfish” by Lofy in trying to draw attention to himself and away from the team. Leahy agreed during that broadcast. Really? REALLY?

Another instance happened again during Warrior volleyball LAST season, Charlie Wade’s first year, in that “Spiderman” was shown on TV in the student section dancing and shaking his okole at the other team. Leahey went on to say it was an “embarrassment” to the student section. REALLY?

Sorry, but this doesn’t “fly” and won’t fly if a younger audience is watching UH sports at home. Gives off the aura that their enthusiasm ISN’T welcomed at the Stan Sheriff Center. Personally, it seems younger enthusiasm STILL isn’t tolerated at all UH games ANYWAY… but that’s beside the point.

It all ties in. All the times K-5 had production brain-farts and decided it was ok to show grandma and grandpa SLEEPING during a live game or reading the damn paper the SHOULD have at least focused the camera on people with their kids more or at least kept the roving camera showing the band or whatever student body is there to give off the impression there is an atmosphere.

Hell, there could be only 50 students there, but keep the camera shots of them close and tight and at least make it look good as much as possible.

It’s television and even if you have to MANUFACTURE the atmosphere then so be it. Do what you have to do to enhance the product ESPECIALLY when it needs enhancement.

  107. bigislandkurt May 19, 2011 4:14 pm

    definitely not Larry Price.

Happy Birthday to da birthday folks.

    BIK

  108. Kazz May 19, 2011 4:17 pm

Another thing I hope Oceanic changes, is the wide “panoramic” shot of the Stan Sheriff Center.

Usually K-5 opens their TV broadcasts by showing the usual opening graphics, then they cut to a shot of the arena using the main cameras they have positioned all the way at the top of the arena.

For sparsely attended games like women’s basketball and to a lesser extent-men’s volleyball (sometimes) I wouldn’t use that shot. It looks bad seeing all those seats empty. They cut to this shot several times, especially during intermissions.

To replace that opening shot of an empty arena, maybe just cut immediately to the commentators or footage of the players warming up. There will be plenty of time for the audience at home to see how empty the arena is, the thing is you want to limit that bad exposure as much as possible. It DOES make a subconscious difference.

Limit what looks bad as much as possible and over-do what looks good.

    Oceanic… That’s a Cable company, right?

Didn’t realize they were a legit broadcaster… The FCC should make them provide broadcasts to other service providers -like satellite co’s – for free.

2012 Rainbow Wahine catcher/1st base Kayla Wartner:

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/may/16/one-time-rivals-lead-escondido-softball-squad/

Wartner got her start playing T-ball with the boys when she was 4.

“I was the one in the outfield picking dandelions,” Wartner said. “They had to yell at me to pay attention. But I always liked to hit.”

And hit she has this season, with a .595 average, 12 doubles, six triples, nine home runs and 31 RBI.

A bit of a tomboy, Wartner has suffered some pretty serious injuries. She dislocated her left elbow playing on the monkey bars. She broke her left arm twice, once after getting pushed off some bleachers, and a year later falling off a scooter.

To Wartner, her choice of Hawaii was easy.

“When I went there, I went with the mind-set to see the school and take a look at the program,” Wartner said. “But it being in Hawaii was a big factor.”

She wants to get on the field right away and hopefully at catcher.

“I like being in charge of the field and having people listen to me when I’m out there,” Wartner said. “I’m not the center of attention – the pitcher is – but I like being involved in every play.”

“The other kids are better players because they’ve played with (Akamine and Wartner),” Coach Cary Weiler said. “They both demand the excellence it takes at this level. It uplifts and makes everyone better.

“They both hit a ton and they’re both quality players. They might not catch next year in college, but I’m sure with their hitting abilities they’ll be playing somewhere.”

ten, twenty, thirty years go by…a bunch of kids and it evolves to “ma or mom”.

while at the same you still call your gf’s babe, honey, sugar, and stuff.

  136. al May 19, 2011 6:47 pm

so now i know what stretch gets anguished about at the lihue terlminal. it took ten minutes to clear 5 people through the tsa check point. never mind that there were more workers than customers. four scanners on site only one in use.

again trainers observing trainee while trainer supervisors are watch the ‘ers which added to the molasses.

    …to be continued.

  137. al May 19, 2011 6:51 pm

…i just miss my flight and probably a seat next to stretch. hungry i meander to the food court, okay, what else do i call a counter that serves a daily special, burgers, and a pseudo subway.

i ask an employee who is apparently on break and eating something, “what’s good to eat here?”

her reply was, “oh get one menu on top the wall.”

i had a feeling that was her way of saying without saying, “oh the food is junk.”

    …more continuation.

  138. al May 19, 2011 6:54 pm

…i order the fried chicken n fries and a large soda thinking that should be a safe meal. well the price was $12.50. the chicken came in a basket with an ample amount of fries. it was hot and just made. wait, i have to search for the chicken. i end up with two pieces of fried chicken. so minute they are that both pieces fit into the palm of my hand.

i wanted to complain that the truth in menu rule did not apply here. since i actually got one fried chicken thigh that was cut in half rather than the two pieces of chicken she said i would get.

to make it worst it was salty.

so yah, this is bad. but, i guess i am better off than tom hanks whom i think i just saw rummaging through the trash bin.

  139. gigi-hawaii May 19, 2011 6:59 pm

    al,

I am going to leave on a Sunday in July around 8:15 am or so. Going to Hilo. How much time should I allow?

Then returning from Kona on a Friday around 11 am. How much time?

  140. al May 19, 2011 6:59 pm

…didn’t think i would continue some more but….

now i know why there are no local food on the menu. two things, one this place is now packed with tourists. two, there are no locals in here except the locos like me who didn’t buy one bento from down the street. three, the food so junk no locals would come back for another meal.

there’s a line of angry tourists. their flight to the mainland has been delayed by two and a half hours.

i suspect that one of the owners of this “food court” caused some mechanical breakdown to that plane on purpose.

oh dear. i still have another hour before the next flight.

    …nuff said.

    me? no clue

  146. al May 19, 2011 7:06 pm

okay gigi. life is simple. so is the airport.

july is the peak of tourism = expect a crowd

from 815 to 1300 traffic is heavy at the tsa lines in hnl. most commuter and mainland flts are bunched in.

if you are being dropped off no problem. otherwise parking is tight. i hope you aren’t going on the fourth of july holiday.

if you buy your tickets throught hawaiian air print your boarding pass before you leave and take only carry on luggage.

do this and you could arrive at the airport 45-60 minutes before boarding. otherwise go early and if time permits you can enjoy an 8.00 corona at the bar.

  147. al May 19, 2011 7:07 pm

    145,..no surprises here.

al, now you know why they call maui no ka oi.

  162. gigi-hawaii May 19, 2011 7:51 pm

Maui no ka oi? It depends on which hotel you stay at.

Maui Prince? Terrific! So spacious, romantic and elegant. Dined under the stars on the emerald green lawn at tables dressed with white linen.

Westin Kaanapali? Lousy! Crummy! Small and pedestrian. Don’t stay there!

Maui Beach? Even worse! Two double beds in the room that bounced with our every move.

The hotel in Kaanapali built by Hemmeter is also nice. Forgot the name of it. Lots of art works from Asia.

  172. Annoddah Dave May 19, 2011 9:59 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Going back to an earlier thread, I think Larry Price and Jim Leahy are toast…too many mental errors or lapses during the broadcast. They are too comfortable like an old shoe that has holes. Unfortunately, the holes are getting bigger although the soul (sole) is somewhat intact. This is pretty much the pattern when Chuck Leahy, Gene Good, and Les Keiter did play by play. Over time, the errors become more noticeable and irritating. Age is definitely a factor. It takes a Vin Scully to survive a long play by play broadcast career. I thought Chuck Wilson’s return during the last Hawaii Winter Baseball season was great. Kanoa does a good job, so will Neil. Jack Wiers or Dave Vinson(?) a definite no.

  173. hkwarrior May 19, 2011 10:02 pm

Al, I have a co worker who travels to LIH every week to visit his parents. Whenever I see him, he complains about TSA in LIH. They’ve got to be the worst security check point in the world. Whatever you do, don’t bring food with you throught the check point if it’s near meal time. Anything liquid or liquid paste is forbidden.(poi, kim chee, toothpaste,….) He’s from there but he hates to fly there!!

Gigi, that early flight to LAX or LAS, i would get here (at the airport) around 2 hours before departure.

  174. gigi-hawaii May 19, 2011 10:28 pm

    hkwarrior,

hey! Maria told me this morning that HK in your name refers to HAWAII KAI not HONG KONG.

    LOL

    The joke is on me!!!

  175. gigi-hawaii May 19, 2011 10:29 pm

Too bad you moved from pearl city, cause she was going to send her son to you and your wife in August 2012 for pre-preschool. You did such a great job with Julia.

  176. hkwarrior May 19, 2011 10:37 pm

Yes Gigi, Julia was really a treat to take care of. We have very fond memories of the kids we watched and Julia was one of the REALLY good ones. I can tell you are having a great time with your grand son. He wouldve loved running around my back yard and with all the toys we had. We miss it, that’s for sure.

  177. al May 20, 2011 12:25 am

in conclusion…so i couldn’t get on that first flight and the next flight was two hours and fifteen minutes later.

so after waiting all that time, the girl announces that the second flight is full already. i turn to head back to the dreaded snack bar of a food court. she calls my name and tells me walk down the jetway with me. if this guy comes before you get to the end no seat, but, if he don’t show up its yours.

i excitedly follow her like a puppy dog.

  178. al May 20, 2011 12:31 am

we get to the cabin entryway, she whirls around and tells me she’s going to see if anyone is in that seat. she rushes out and says 15a go hurry up.

i make way down searching for 15a. i find it and lo and behold in 15b is mountain of a man twice my size (really). i meekishly say 15a.

he has a scowl of a look. and slowly gets up. i see that he already got real comfy by putting the middle armrest up to accomodate his girth. i jump in and for a second pondered putting that armrest back down. before my brain functions he plops in taking two thirds of both seats. i am literally squashed between him and the fueselage of the aircraft.

  179. al May 20, 2011 12:34 am

forty five minutes later the plane lands and my body is frozen in position.

i am sitting there thinking hey buddy you could have at least thanked me for giving up half of my seat. but, nooooo.

if one could have read my mind.
