State of relocating
The good news with the state system is that roughly 15 days after you leave your state job, you will receive a paycheck. And then roughly 15 days after that, you will receive another paycheck. And, maybe, 15 days after that you will receive another paycheck.
The not-so-good news is after starting a state job, you might not receive a paycheck in 15 days nor, possibly, in 30 days.
It’s the procedural lag that affects everyone from custodians to professors to administrators and, yes, to coaches. And it’s not just limited to the university.
Also, in many cases, an employee hired from the mainland will be allowed to stay in a hotel for three days at UH’s expense. After that, the stay becomes taxable income.
The lesson: Before coming to Hawaii, save some money and find a good Realtor.

Hopefully Gouveia invested his NFL earnings wisely.

Gouveia got a workout before coming here.
He said he had to shovel snow off his driveway. His driveway is 60 yards, I think.
By the way, he has lived in North Carolina the past eight years.
His wife and youngest son (who will be a senior in high school) will remain in N.C. this coming year.
mistah Ahouse you must be on vacation eh
Gouveia’s son also did well in the state wrestling tournament.
A-House is enjoying our street’s new smooth road. It only took 40 years, right?
must be a windward side thing new road get day off bwhaaaaaaa
morning to you Stephen
Koakane:
They brought all the trucks and machinery to do our neighborhood’s roads. But it kept raining and raining — I think we had four sunny days since Christmas — but, now, we have the smoothest roads. Delays can be frustrating and annoying, but it’s worth it when the craftsmanship is so nice. Kudos to the road crews.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Dat’s a lot of snow to shovel.
Still waiting for our neighborhood’s streets to be repaved. Dey sed sometime between now and April. I’ll believe it when I see it.
(Pali Hwy needs it the most, but that’s the State’s job, not the City’s)
GO WARRIORS!
GO WAHINE!
Aloha all–furikake or field of dreams? (ok, I was trying too hard on that one)
jm2375:
That’s sort of like when the cable guy says he’ll be over between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
When we had our Road Runner installed several years ago, the cable guy was all antsy. He said he had to pee. I told him to go to the bathroom. He said there was a “policy” about not peeing in people’s homes. Never heard of that one. So he did a hurry-up job, and left.
Good Morning Gangeez! 😉
I’m sure Coach Gouveia will have relative or two or thee or four he can stay with. Watched his interview on Da Big Guy’s sports report last night. He’s clearly very excited to be here and looks like he’ll do well. Very intense – lotsa fire in his eyes.
Stephen,
Is that CC way of road kill
Stephen –
A “No Pee Policy”? Sounds cruel and unusual. Maybe you should have directed him to your infamous hedges, which should be located outside your house, no? 😆
Guud Morning Tsaikos….bootiful, sunny day…
leading to a busy weekend….IMUA WARRIORS/WAHINES!
Pee or pp?
CC road kill

I’m not sure where he ended up peeing, but he didn’t want to use our bathrooms.
Unless it was a deuce.
Boola: No. 22
LMAO.
LMAO or lol?
I think Gary Beemer wanted to get a head start, so he ended up working nearly 2 months before getting his first check, I think.
koakane:
nope, at work, but arrived early and got to the blog!
ST:
every day we travel over our newly paved road, we say “thank you” – it feels sooo guud with no bumps – not even where they “patched” the new asphalt to the previously installed asphalt.
life’s little pleasures…

KPT or Mayor Wrights?
The Wave or Pink Cadillac?
You should have pointed him towards A-house’s bushes. 🙂
DH, as it was called in our day (juvenile detention home–more current name) or Youth Correctional Facility?
The 15 day wait is typical of most jobs. When I relocated from Hawaii to Cali, the company paid for my hotel and rental car for 2 weeks, but I had to file it as taxable income. I also had to file the move that they paid for as taxable income, all $15,000 of it. My wife didn’t work the first year and our tax bill was over $5,000, for a recent college graduate at a new job it hit us pretty hard. So, this is not a situation that is only for a move to Hawaii.
off topic, but …
The University of Hawaii expects to shelve plans to close the upper deck at Aloha Stadium this football season and will instead look at ways to give current season ticket holders more value in 2014, officials said.
Since closure would displace approximately 1,100 season-ticket holders who account for 3,225 seats, athletic director Ben Jay said Tuesday, “It doesn’t look like I’m going to (lean) to closing the upper deck.”
see SA.
“more value”:
??? ??? ???
Ai-
It’s a good idea not to close the top. The idea should be to increase attendance, not give the illusion the place is fuller. Why worry about what the stadium looks like to pay-per-view subscribers? Hey, it might have the opposite effect. If the place is too full, if i were a UH fan, I would say, ah, I’ll stay home and watch on the big screen.
even student workers at the university get hit with the payroll lag. when i first started working at hamilton library it took 3 pay periods for me to get my first check.
ST: Exactly, this is the equivalent of putting all the nice chunks of meat on the top of a beef stew plate–only to find out the rest is only potatoes, carrots and bay leaf. What the—? Pretending to have a full stadium, is at the end of the day, still pretending.
I was doing a crossword puzzle and one of the answers was “dunce cap.”
Man, we had some really strange teaching methods back in the day.
• Dunce caps
• Writing the same sentence over and over on the chalk board.
• Castor oil.
I mean, who came up with castor oil as punishment?!?
Boola:
Conversely, if you go to Whole Foods in Kailua, everyone takes all the meat out of the ladle-your-own-soup bins and leaves only the broth.
Uh, oh, I just went off on a tangent. I’ve got to stay focused.
State of Hawaii does the same thing to UH Sports as Whole Food customers do to the soup.
Good morning everyone!
RE: #40 and #42
Good decision. Should be a no-brainer when you would displace/irritate 1/6 of your season ticket holders and force them into less desirable seating in full sections. At least half of them would probably not renew. People get attached to their seats and view locations. Decision makers who sit in VIP boxes probably don’t appreciate this.
I don’t sit in red/yellow anymore, but they are good seats…choice locations when you compare to 70-100K stadiums. We just have a tropical sun problem when the game starts too early. 👿
Hallelujah—–Mr. ST….here in Manila now 4:21 AM….n lo n behold they will not close off the yellow section at the stadium…but instead look at ways to add value to season ticket holders…
Finally sumone is thinking positive up there…Mr. Ben Jay…Mahalo…
Because sumthing positive is been looked at in their marketing dept…I will share my idea to fill those seats..
FIRST: i am sure you know the exact cost down to the last centavo how much it cost to keep it open. IF you made those seats FREE.. how many more tickets would you need to sell to cover that cost?
SECOND: Go to the commissioner of Pop Warner Football and have a chat and offer to all Pop
Warner players (and cheerleaders) FREE admission (or for a buck) any seat in the yellow section
(except seats for season ticket holders)… don’t be “pake” here..if you offer 50% off it not work…
DON’T FORGET THE NEIGHBOR ISLANDS…Keep in the back of your mind..that at this age…none of these kids drive…mama or papa will have to drive them…average 4 in a family…purchase 3 tickets for one free… not to bad huh.. that yellow section should be filled…the catch…they must wear their jersey…or no free admission…same 4 cheerleaders..problem most of adults forget how our schools used this ploy to have us attend school functions at our child’s school and still do…
THIRD: If after the first game it does not completely fill that section… move on to other groups…to fill it…soccer… by sections etc… leeward.. windward…I admit many small details to be worked out.. but worth a try…ask for help.. many on this board are willing to help.. get sum minds together..it can be worked out..IMUA … the podogee mafia is alive n well in Manoa…
CONGRATULATIONS TO…. Bryan Ho of Waimanalo…. 25 years of driving 4 UPS….accident free…wonder how many miles he has driven in 25 years…he must know every puka in his area of delivery..
What’s the average age of people on here? I’m sure not too many 20 somethings.
I wouldn’t mind being my “average age” again. 22 was a good time.
Get choke, or uku planny?
45. ST: I dunno if this was a Kaua’i thing, but my nursery school and 1st grade teachers would put us (me especially, as urusai as I was) in a headlock and shove a bar of ivory soap down our throats. You know the soap that had been sitting on sink forever? My parents would just say “good for you, you deserve it.”
keeping up with the …
UCLA: Head coach Jim Mora’s new contract, signed last December, will “likely” make him the second-highest paid public school coach in the Pac-12 according to the Los Angeles Times.
Mora will earn at least $3.25 million in 2014 and a base of $21 million over the next six seasons.
Speaking of fixed streets, one day before they were going to pave my street (they already stripped the top layer), a pipe broke in the street, one house up and across from my house. Board of Water Supply was fixing it into the night, digging a trench to fix the broken pipe. I left the house very early in the morning for golf. When I got home in the afternoon, our street was paved. I felt good driving on a freshly paved street. That same night, a water pipe broke right across 1 house up from the previous one, so BWS tore up the newly paved road. They patched it ugly, but only temporarily. The next day, another pipe under the street, broke 1 house up from the last one. The fixed that one the same way. A few days ago, a crew came by to fix the temporary patches permanently. I asked them about the 1st broken pipe which now has a 2×6 foot indentation in the road. The workers said that it wasn’t in their contract to do that, only the last 2. So now I question how long will the “new” road with its “new” repair last. Also, as a former floor layer, when we lay floors, the floor must be dust free before gluing, other wise the glue will not stick to the floor. They 1st pipe that broke left a whole bunch of mud from its inception and down the street. Did they clean it up before they layed the new asphalt? It being C&C, the mayor will be pau his office by the time the road needs a new layer of asphalt or repairs so he no need worry. Just pass on the pilikia to the next mayor who will say that the previous mayor didn’t leave any money for repairs, and so on, and so on, and so on……………..
Inyoface:
There are plenty 20somethings tweeting me all the time. I don’t know how to tweet back.
#54 NN~ now days, parents will file a lawsuit for tramatizing their son/daughter and the state will settle out of court with a handsome payment.
i thought it was some sort of law that you must be paid every two weeks or at least twice a month?

The problem with the state and city are two many hands stirring the soup in the pot and spoiling the soup.

Cocos, better hot chocolate.
ST I want to thank you for putting up this forum for everyone to express themselves. I’ve always found it interesting to hear how people react to the different situations in our beloved state. Personally I’ve always supported any coach who gave of themselves to the program except for one woman’s basketball coach who always seemed to put down his players in the public forum. I’m glad we have Coach Beeman who has this program back on track. I know its tough on Coach Chow but I believe he has good intentions for the football program. He had to change the culture from the previous regimes and the change is for the good.
c&k or kalapana
Al do you remember the night club that was next to Micheles?
As you entered, Micheles was to the right and a little further back to the left was a night club.

Maile Room, (Kahala Hilton) 1986. Trying to impress my date, I order Steak Tartare, because it said “prepared tableside.” I had no idea what it was. The waiter pushes the cart to my table and says, “sir, how would you like your steak tartare prepared?” I reply, “medium rare.” He says, “excuse me,” and runs off to the side (leaving the cart at my table). I notice that he is doubled over in laughter. A few minutes later, he comes back to my table, and with tears in his eyes, says,”sir, steak tartare is prepared rare, and I was asking you if you would like it prepared spicy or mild? Would you like to change your order?” He then immediately excused himself for a few more minutes (presumably to laugh his head off). When he returned, the hard head in me insisted on having the tartare. So if you order raw hamburger with a raw egg, salt, pepper, worcestershire sauce and dry mustard with crackers, expect to pay $50.00 for it. The comedic entertainment (from me) was free.

St. anthony…Ayala’s used to be on North School St in Kalihi. The club was on the Makai side of North School St. The place closed down. Not too far from the Joey Desa Baseball field.
144 GoBows here is a true story I have not told too many folks-hopefully the SOL has run it’s course. Back in the day, I loved WAR, so my mom, being a single mom, says she wiil take me. I threw a fit, “no, I wanna go by myself.” I was in 6th grade, she finally relented. A plan was in place, she would drop me off, and then promptly at end of concert, I walk a couple blocks to my uncle’s place on beretania.
Everything is going to plan, she drops me off, I’m walking into HIC, and I hear a “hui, bullie”, dats right, this Samoan bruddha jacked me right before the concert; taking my ticket and my money for Washington saimin afterwards. I was so pissed. I sprint to my uncles house, crying , dat small kid crying, where no real words are coming out. Finally, I spit it out, Samoan took my ticket!!!! My uncle who was only like 25 or so, puts me in his Javelin (nice, right??!) and we hightail it back.
I had noticed when we left, he grabbed a small crumpled brown bag, which I thought was his dinner. Well, sole was already gone. He still took me to eat saimin, and so I asked him, oh what about your dinner? He was like “what”, I say ” da brown bag” . He grins, and shows me the contents of the bag–a deuce deuce . My uncle had just got out of OCCC about a month prior. It’s nice to be loved , but it’s even nicer we did not find a sole that night.
Al Noga or Niko Noga

Used to go to the Hawaii Islander games from the beginning in 1961 with Carlos Bernier. He had a unique batting stance. He eventually retired and went back home to Puerto Rico.
Anybody remember the name of the keg and beer service that I think was run by Hal Stringert back in the day ?
RE: #140
NotNasti — At 17.5 years old I was alone on my first cruise in 1967. Had to wear suit and tie to dinner and the first night the menu was entirely in French. I asked which one was french fries and got stares. I waited to see what other peoples plates looked like before ordering by pointing.
The Maitre’d moved me to different tables….finally setting up a special one for me and the only other two Hawaii passengers on board. Assigned us a very senior Filipino waiter and the luau began… 🙂
Lol why Al were you a bouncer in one of those places

BTW ST I hope you found all the off the wall trivia interesting to you but we have basketball tomorrow ….GO BOWS….
One last thing before I go.. I used to go to most of the Fab five games. I was so impressed with Jerome Freeman who made some incredible passes to his teammates and would drive to the basket among the trees and make a spinning move and get the ball in the basket. John Penebacker was the 6’2″ center with lots of hops who was found playing basketball with the Air Force at Hickam. Dwight Holiday was the outside threat and Al Davis picked all the garbage points and Bob Nash was a rebounding hog. He had 30 rebounds in a game and I think it was against Arizona.
Golden Duck or Red Rooster (pake kaukau).
old808:
The late Al Lopaka used to sing at place on Ena Road. I can’t remember that club. It got demolished when the area was rebuilt.

Wasn’t that the ‘Hale Ho?’
Hey, we used to go to Yoko’s to listen to Leina’ala Haili, lots of good times, then it became a ‘funny kind’ joint for those of other persuasions. A dive, but a good fun one.

Speaking of Bernier, one morning, in the late seventies, I was having breakfast at an Osaka hotel, and two Latin ballplayers with Kintetsu Buffalo uniforms on sat next to me. I recognized one of them, Matty Alou, but the other one drew a blank. But he was friendly and we started talking. He asked me where I was from. “Hawaii? Oh, I used to play there.” He turned out to be Winston Llenas, one of the best hitters the Islanders ever had. He told me that those years in Hawaii were the best of his professional career: “weather just like my home country, and really nice people!” He still had his PCL championship ring on.
boola. back in 67′ ran into trouble with some “housing girls.” Was walking around Aiea HS with a friend. We cut classes at Kalani to impress some Aiea girls we met a a social. The plan was to walk up to them at lunch recess for that “what are you guys doing here!!” effect.
After a few minutes we were confronted by a bunch on tough looking girls. “you come hea?” We say no. “wea you go?” Answer “Kalani.” One girl shoves my friend “you betta go or you goin get lickin’s.” A small crowd starts to gather anticipating a beef. Need less to say we got out of there pronto. Thinking was these girls are tough don’t want to run into their boyfriends.
Later found out later they were girls from Halawa Housing. Thing was I don’t recall any Samoan girls. Mostly Hawaiian/Chinese/Portagee mix types. The leader was a wry Puerto Rican mix girl. She looked like she good beef. To this day I remember her name – Primrose. My friend and I still joke about the day Primrose almost kicked our asses.

ok back from my grand pa duties now making spagetti. Yes there you go “Hale Ho” or something lidat…and about St. Francis girls back in my time had plenty good looking friendly girls. And Yokos was a fun place where the Laughing Kahunas with Karen Keawehawaii used to do a gig to 4 in the morning. Around two am the mahus used to come in with their big hairdos as well as other entertainers around town.
204…dang I forgot about Winston Lienas….
what was the name of dat place at the corner of King/Waialae…one storage place now but before…Peter Moon and all kinds of great groups used to play there.
Yes it was Top of the Shoppe on Kapiolani.
Jim Leahey or Kanoa Leahey?
Moke or Tita
belt or slippah
no wiah hangahs
209: Oasis?
pound or pound
Das it…Oasis…
kim chee 1 or kim chee 2
205:I once saw Bette Middler on an interview, and she called out AHS, by name, and said she use to get beat, every week by local girls, and it was by far the worst period of her entire life.
Oasis was a place you could go dancing. It was the first place in Hawaii that I saw a strip tease show which was tame compared to now from what I hear lol. The dancer could twirl her tassle with the best of em.
Kim Chee 2
I remember Boola…Radford and Aiea didn’t get along.
Haunani Asing or Haunani Apoliona.
I think a lot of the lower Halawa housing went to Radford.
Chuck Leahey or Jim Leahey? What a family!
was oasis on waialae?
Apoliona she is such a nice person.
Old808: Radford had tons of talent back in the day. Folks don’t remember that Homer Jones was all OIA as a Jr at defensive back, all-state senior year at running back.
Old808, I think that was Arizona St. Nash did that against. They also had a ‘big” who was some sort of all-American. Dat I don’t remember. Cheating if I google it.
yes Oasis is at the junction where king and Waialae converges. After you pass St Louis Heights rd going ewa, Oasis was on the mauka side. There is a huge storage place that was built after the Oasis was torn down.
ballpicker I knew someone would get the right team. I wasn’t sure if it was Arizona or Arizona State but hey I got the right state.
hey.. been wondering .. i know what “meoi” means.. but not what language that is ?
227: yes she is, and Ms. Asing, was and is a beautiful woman.
1962 Radford was the ROIA champ with Himmer Henry RB, Mel Saunders FB, Eugene Tokuhama QB and Walter Maze RB
Yes you did Old808. All good. Very entertaining Warrior Blog the last few days and I had to break my “silence” and threw in my two cents. lmao as ST lamented earlier.
Hey DPK, howzit my fine man. Imua braddah.
Where is my glasses? Threw=throw. Over and out…..
1975 Verner Ah Sing, the Radford, back of the year, averaged over 11 yards per carry for the season. The Punahou transfer, was a holy terror–Verner RIP.
Was Vasconcellos still coaching in 1975 at Radford? I probably spelt his name wrong. He used to run the power I formation.
I think kind sir, you are referring to the legend Velasco.
Yes Velasco I spelt the name wrong.
kden update
Ayala still there but now Mexican resturant. Porarican association or club now underneath in back of resturant
northshore fan other Islander player was Herbie Phules
glades or club habahaba
queen surf or outrigger showroom

velasco…wow that is a truly sports name here in hawaii.. used to enjoy Pete..in hilo at the haili volleyball tournament…now that was an athlete…used to see him lurking .. at crane park? across leonards..looking for volleyball talent.. after his playing days…maybe many of the kids not knew who he was.. but watching him play was always a pleasure…
#205 Cocobean I was cracking up about your trip to Aiea. I think Primrose was after my time but the name sounds so familiar. Maybe was a sister of one of my classmates.
#241 mahalo for the update on Ayala’s and you are correct. I do recall a Mexican Restaurant.
That was some cachi cachi music back then and pretty Puerto Rican wahines.
sorry but gotta put this one in …. HS fight songs Farrington Cherrio, Mckinley’s Black an Gold or Iolani No Ka Oi
let the debate begin
241…I use to hit Watertown, underage, to listen to old school Chang–a-Lang Hawaiian music. Kekua Fernandes, Daryl Lupenui…..classic times.
There is a song about the Lady from Waihole. She was a tiny Okinawan lady who would come down from the valley with her wheel barrow filled with bananas, sweet potatos, papayas and what ever else she grew. I would stop when ever she was there on the highway and buy bananas from her. I visited her at her farm to buy okinawan sweet potato slips to grow but she wouldn’t let me pay her. Her husband had passed away and she would go back to Okinawa every so often. I don’t know why I’m throwing this out but cachi cachi music and the song The Lady from Waihole for some reason triggered that memory.
Hey what da heck a little trivia.
aunty genoa..what a treasure…used to go there hotel street area.. she was in a club across some theatre..forgot the name.. with that bald headed piano player…wow late 50’s…good music…
Aunty Genoa used to play the ukulele and sing on the Lucky Luck Tv show. She grew up in Kahana Valley.
if you no remember Farrington fight song go on utube search Cherrio march
try go bring back old honolulu stadium fball daz
Enjoying all the stories about the old days. Carry on.
Oh, and the Bee Sisters use to also tear it up big time, on the Chang-a-lang circuit. I knew their daughters, great great people….
Not much time to post today but I see the reminiscing still going on. lol. Ayala’s brings back memories as I was working with two married pretty part puerto rican ladies who recommended going to Ayalas for their pasteles. So, we go in there and I think my friend and I who were single were the only two orientals in that place. We had fun though and used to go for some drinks after work quite often at places like La Manchas. That’s when Manilow’s Copa Cabana song was popular.
#237,
Pretty sure it was Ah-Ching and not Asing.
Also recall that RBs David Yamashiro and Wallace Ho also transferred to Radford (from Iolani).
Someone brought up Liz Damon and the OE or Linda Green and the Tempos yesterday and that brings back memories. My heart used to miss a beat when I saw those ladies performing. Now, it’s just irregular heart beats.
#234,
Never know that Eugene played QB since before my day.
But now I know to ask him when I see him.
Okay here’s an old days story.
Used to be a club in Pearl City back in the 80s by the old movie theaters in Pearlridge. Met this haole chick. We go out a couple times.
One day she wants to go to this bar that closes at 4 a.m. in Waikiki. She tells me she used to go out with Don Ho and the bar is where all his boys hang out. She tells me she wants to go but there might be trouble if they see me with her because she’s one of Don’s girls. If there’s trouble we have to leave right away.
Whatever.
We go, and meet some of the boys. They are the nicest guys typical local brothers they could care less about the chick and who’s she’s with. Ain’t no beeg ting bruddah.
The chick thought she was a little more special than she was.
Now days, when it comes to 4 a.m., I’ve usually been asleep for about six hours.
Ahhh yes Truman La Manchas
Kapakahi, Asing is close enough, like Vasconcellos or Velasco. When you get old, that’s what happens. Speaking from experience.
I still recall seeing Kani Kauahi at Hanks Place in Kaimuki, in the late 70s, again out wen I was underage, and he was wearing these unforgettable Palaka slacks…..seeing them like it was yesterday.
Kaimuki had some good teams under Charley Miyashiro (good guy as well) in the late 60s, early 70s. Players such as Joe Lee, Randy Borden (BYU), Andrew Okada, Henry Koa (Arizona), among others. Still remember that game against McKinley at Honolulu Stadium which was filled with controversy (supposed goal line stanch by the Tigers, while the Kaimuki players said that they crossed the goal line several times). McKinley went on to win the OIA with players such as Chester Grey at running back. To this day, many old time Bulldog backers still talk about that game.
The Bulldog basketball team with many of the same athletes, along with Al “Spider” Kunewa” went to the State Tournament. Again, my brain might be a little fuzzy after all of these years.
Yeah Truman Linda Green was hot.
Gotta throw in some football. One guy that folks never really talk about, but he was with the a Raiders during some of their glory years is Arthur Smith. Played at Radford, was actually a running back, and then played at LB in college, was from around Halawa way. Anyone remember him?
Wasn’t the restaurant at King and Waialae called Chacos? First time I went out and had to cook for myself. Was ono though.
I remember back in the day dressing up because we were going to the Pagoda or Pearl City Tavern for dinner. My grandmother, however, never liked the monkeys by the bar 🙂
Kapakahi, e kala mai, I stand corrected. Ah Ching, his QB?? Matt Manuma.
Boola: Arthur Smith had an injury plagued career at UH, but played one helluva game at outside linebacker vs USC in 78. Good size guy at 6.1 230 lbs, who could run well.
263… What duo group did Randy Borden play in?
256: Played with Jr and Wally. Heard they are doin good nowdays! Jr is on Maui.
Dats da Braddha -I think he stuck with the Raiders for several years.
Boo: Jon and Randy
#261. Truman,
BTW truly a small world…..’cuz I know the Nakakura family that you mentioned the other day. Next door neighbors to family friends…..right above Aiea HS.
Speaking of Velasco, used to work with his son Kevin and buddy Jay Higgins (both Punahou star athletes) and Roy Villanova (Kalani & Chaminade roundballer) on the hot tarmac as ramp agents for Aloha Airlines.
#266,
Yup…..was Chaco’s. Great teppanyaki.
Also the Nakakuras, wasn’t Shawn ILH lineman if the year for the boys kalepohaku?
Went to school with some of the older brothers.
Wow, Kapakahi, it is a small world. If you like you can send me an email at kkawa50@gmail.com and we can talk more. I don’t see them all the time but I try to stay in touch with them. Speaking of all this music, I gotta go now and take my son to his violin lessons. So, talk to you later.
3 prong-mahalo! I remember your QBs, Nolan Arakawa and Len Tsuhako. Len because he was in all the baseball leagues I played in, and you know Aiea is baseball crazy back in the day.
Honolulu Dogs or Allison Flyer? Rock and Roll!
Oasis…peeps used to gather for entertainment, good Hawaiian music and night club life…now it’s a gathering place for other things…..
Islanders…one of my favs…Rod Gaspar
Bo Belinsky

Does this sound familiar…
The beginning of the end, however, came when the Islanders moved from rickety Honolulu Stadium to Aloha Stadium in 1976. The new stadium was located in Halawa in west-central Oahu, far from the team’s fan base. Attendance, already in decline, fell even further as fans were unwilling to make the drive. Additionally, the lease with the state government, which owned the stadium, didn’t allow the Islanders to earn any proceeds from concessions or advertising, severely limiting the team’s income. The 1976 pennant winners almost didn’t finish the season when the PCL briefly stripped them of their franchise.[1]
Its last club, in 1987, finished last in its division and last overall in attendance (under 100,000) in the PCL. By this time, the team’s financial problems were becoming more acute, in part due to what the Honolulu Star-Bulletin called the worst lease in the PCL.[1] Prior to the 1988 season, citing years of dwindling attendance, the team moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and became the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.[3]
Boo: Dats da only two guys I let put dea hands where da sun don’t hit me! No such ting as shotgun back den! hehehehe
Was Andrew Okada a police officer?
And there was a Nakakura family also living in Pacific Palisades back in the late 60’s early 70’s.
John Osorio ?
Re: #281 – 283
NorthShoreFan — “Rocket” Rod Gaspar and the 3rd baseman John Werhaus. Les Keiter doing the radio re-creactions…
Tommy Lasorda was the colorful manager for Spokane (?) that we loved to jeer. People threw unopened bags of peanuts and stuff at him in the 3rd base coaches box at Honolulu stadium. He would turn around, check it out, and put the bags in his pockets.
Yeah, Aloha stadium seemed large and sterile. My dad and I stopped going after two seasons there.
NSF,
I remember Walt “No Neck” Williams as the first Islander that I liked.
And SteveM, that’s what I also remember. The opponents of the Islanders, especially the Eugene Emeralds and the hated Spokane Indians. Those were the days.
yup…andrew o. hpd.
Don’t forget Chuck Tanner coach, Dick Kitamura whose grandson played for UH and was our third baseman last year. I just enjoyed Carlos Bernier. He hit in the mid 300s and was colorful. Bobby Presscot was one of the stars during the first year and hit .302
#263 you may have forgotten Ricky Furuyama, running back for the Bulldogs back in the day.
Al, Had the pleasure of working with Andrew O, albeit as a rookie. lol
204 Jalansky – my dad’s good friend, Jyun “Curly” Hirota played for Kintetsu. He later became the U.S. Scout for them. I still have a Kintetsu Buffaloes hat somewhere. He had some great stories about life in pro ball. He later became events manager at Aloha Stadium, which is why my dad and I got to see so many Islander games in the late 70’s/early ’80’s. RIP Uncle Jyun. Thanks for the memories Jalansky!
islanders….how about john matias, played in the majors and for the islanders. was also my coach when i played at pearl city.
283. – don’t forget Julio Cruz on loan from the Mariners!
The Chuck Tanner team, in his second year as manager, drew a lot of fans to Islander games at the Termite Palace. Crowds of 13,000–15,000 were not uncommon. During that year, I remember attending an A’s game at the Oakland Coliseum, and being among only 5,000 or so people there. We who experienced the Tanner years in Hawaii witnessed one of the most enjoyable and successful minor league teams in the history of Triple-A baseball, in one of the most fan-friendly stadiums for baseball anywhere.
Lotsa reminiscing. Used to go to a lot of Islander games since we lived maybe 5 blocks away. I still have a HI Islanders patch.
Good night, Irene….
#238 Forgot the years but Ticky was at Roosevelt and Hank at UH.
#169 Buffoman – The Chinese American Club on Kapiolani Blvd – think the property is where the Marco Polo Condo is located.
Was not a member – won’t join a club that would have me as a member.
mama dings on maui is owned by the frank caravalho family. he is from lanikila, but he has passed on. roy v, bb player for chaminade, retired from the state corrections lives in wailuku. the hc coach at radford velasco’s son is married to hinano kaumeheiwa’s daughter and lives on maui.
#276, Boo, this Nakakura clan was all girls.
counselor, and the other brother of ticky and hank was a policeman on maui.
and liz damon is a casino hostess at the fremont hotel in las vegas.
Lots of Islander memories. I believe Bob Quinn was the owner when it was going good.
#301, Tom-interesting comment “won’t join a club that would have me as a member”. Curious as to why?
#301 brah, you are a bit more seasoned than me. That was an interesting place.
#276. Truman,
If the same family, then just know that youngest daughter living with Dad at the same house after Mom passed away unexpectedly about 5 years ago. Remembered that the eldest daughter is a dentist. Haven’t kept in touch. Used to see them at their neighbor’s Xmas party…..awhile back.
#263-OSD, speaking of the McKinley Tigers and Chester Grey, was that the same year they had Ron Autele at QB? Had some friends on that team.
tommy..did you know sam king ?
295-Biggestuhfan: from a reliable source, I heard that Jyun Hirota used to commute by train & bus from Ewa to attend McKinley High School, because he wanted to play baseball. Back when Mr. Hirota played in Japan, I believe the team was known as the Kintetsu Pearls. BTW, Winston Llenas was very unhappy in Japan. In that conversation I had with him, he told me that he had never in his life felt so lonely while being surrounded by so many people. Maybe that is why Hawaii shone so brightly in his memory.
Here’s my solution to the stadium seating issue:
OK, so no closing of the upper decks? How about only closing the upper decks in the end zones? Leave the blue and orange sections open and there will be enough open seats in other upper deck areas to relocate displaced season ticket holders to comparable seats.
That won’t save the same amount of money. However, instead of leaving the empty seats in the closed upper decks of the end zones, how about covering them with advertisement banners? You see stadiums that have empty seats covered with school colored canvas or some type of cover so you don’t see rows of empty seats. Why not sell advertising space on those covers to make a bit of money? Money goes to UH Athletic Dept., not the stadium.
jalansky…you just jarred my childhood memory of ray jabbo” jablonski.
a classic…
sashimi or poke’?
autele, a 4 year starter, grad in 1970, so yah he was the qb in 1969.
its spelled chako’s. believe it was named after manager/owner jimmy f.’s gf who was a dancer.
jalansky…i know when bo belinsky pitched busloads would attend.
then along came tats.
#316-al, thanks for confirming that bit on Autele. I remember hanging out with my McKinley friends and seeing him at one of the pool halls. Being a country boy, I was kinda lost where that pool hall was located but I remember warehouse type buildings somewhere between Kakaako and the Ala Moana Shopping Ctr. I guess lot of McKinley grads since it was close. Anyone who can remember those pool halls will clear one of those clouded memories of mine.
RE: #313
kev-1 I think people have their definite preferences as to sideline or endzone. The endzone buffs say they can watch the holes open up better and really see redzone plays on their end well. The sideline guys say they get better depth perception as to gain or loss on a play.
I’m a sideline guy, but many here swear by the endzone seats. I imagine this basic seating location preference applies to most.
318-al: the Tatsuno era at UH was something else. Against Oregon or Oregon State (I can’t remember), he struck out 20 batters in a 9 inning game. I was there. Great times.
termite palace aka honolulu stadium factoid…
directly across from the center most rear gate where the parking lot was there was a men’s restroom.
directly next to it was a fenced in compound with what appeared to be a storage room.
did you know there resided the caretaker of the stadium?
a bachelor no doubt, this hunched over guy also had one big black german shepherd. who he let out when the facility was closed. you may have stepped on one of his piles. me and a neighborhood kid found this out the hard way one day after we hopped the wall to go check it out. we must have been 8 years old.
i wonder what happened to him after they shut down the old stadium.
321. me, too.
he was a big draw with the islanders, too.
yea me remember a pool hall there owned by a japanese dude.. skinny guy named allen… forget the name…had sum very big time 9 ball games go on there…last 4 days.. n big bucks lost.. by a taxi driver.. who welched on his bets… n could not collect cauze he was backed by the so called “syndicate” then…maybe i would not be here today if my partner lost he he.. but he was very good when it came to playing for money… had quite a few tables in there…n was just in back of ed n dons candy..me thinks on kona street…
319…that was cruel and inhumane. now, i’ll be up all night trying to recollect.
i can picture it in my mind’s eye.
dang!
i think in the sheridan st area or near where side street inn is??
Al — regarding Truman’s #319, I’m not saying anything… 🙄
Oh, he said “McKinley grads“… OK.
324… i believe i know the cab driver. but, i won’t disclose his identity for safety reasons….wink.
stevem…what?
whitey: Sad to hear about Frank Srs passing. Is Jr still running Mama Dings? Frank, Mary, Jr and Eugene were close friends. Good people the Caravalhos.
324…ummmm. did you say you had a partner???
hmmmmm?
yea he was filipino from haleiwa…had a hasu patch..was his fathers i think..n he n sister inherited..
we had a import company.. selling german stereos..telefunken..good souns.. n the wood was good.. big consoles..when you played a command record…man..you know you was really listening to music.. especially if was like mantovani…they had sum good artists on there label.. bat only remember him now..
st. anthony trojan/al, it would be in that area and yeah, they had a lot of tables. I think I remember walking up some metal stairs to get in?? Maybe not, could have been cement, lol. It’s been bugging me for years.
think his name was gary….??
well this was down stairs.. so cannot be the one..was c;ose to piikoi st.. n next was the shopping center..had gas station on the carner there.. n was close to sears side..
st. anthony trojan, I meant like a porch stairs like a cement foundation; not second floor. It could be the one because I don’t think there were a lot of other pool halls (with a lot of tables) in the area (I could be wrong as I wasn’t into checking them all out).
#316. Pretty sure Ron Autele grad 69′. My senior year 67-68′ spent many a day “visiting” Mckinley. Got to know him and his boys think they called themselves the Pharaohs.
#319. The Mckinley class cutters used to hangout at a pool hall they called “Sheridan’s.” Went there a couple of times but can’t picture where it was now. I remember they took me to a lunch room called Torii’s. A lot of food for prices lower than any drive in and most lunch wagons. Anyone remember Torii’s>
his was the only one me remember n frequent… did not know ne others.. but my eyes were bad n stilll bad.. so never shot.. buy lot of my friends did..so just hung out there..
yea that area.. all look the same..the waikiki side of ward.. coral…kawaihao..kona streets.. many small business in there before time..
There was a pool hall on Kapiolani Blvd fronting the Ala Moana Shopping Center on the ground level. I used to shoot pool in the complex that has City Mill on St. Louis Heights Dr. The pool hall was in the back below st level. Used to play at Farrington Billards.
don’t get me started on bowling alleys lol
cocobean, where was that hall located? on sheridan st.? My recollection is hazy so it could have been on that side but I thought it was more makai.
oops wrong waimanu street…me look the map.. n queen street
Classic bowl, Boulevard Bowl, City Bowl, Bowl-a-Drome, Nanakuli, Aiea, Leeward Bowl, Pali Lanes, Windward bowl, Kalihi Bowl, Waialae, Aloha Bowl, 2nd floor on Hotel st near the old Ymca forget the name but had pin boys and maybe 4 to 5 lanes, Kaimuki….just civilian not counting the military.
and now I say good night
Pharoahs, reminds me of Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs.
me remember the one across the y…. used to go there for haircuts… at the y …when i had hair.. was filipino angel cut my hair he he he
sleep well old…
Goodnite old808, goodnite al, goodnite st. anthony trojan (sorry, too much waltons).
nite truman..take care.. have a good sleep
only 5:30 pm here now.. go eat.. nite all …
#340. Cue N Cushion on Kapiolani run by the Sakuma family. The St. Louis one was called River Side owned by Eddie Tanaka. Wasn’t into shooting pool. Pool halls for me was more about playing the nickle machines, trying to pick up girls or scoring some paka.
Funny thing is I starting shooting pool on weekends about two years ago. Sure wish I’d learn the basics of the game when I was a teenager rather than at 60+.
Remember National Billards?
Herbie Plews.
cocobean… i believe you are spot on with the younger autele ’69. now that i got my chronology in order.
i guess my recollection ain’t that bad though on the sheridan st pool hall.
ad to that list of halls, university pool hall, campus cue, and wasn’t there a rainbows?
rainbow cue at the top of kalakaua ave. freddy ran the joint. plenny action.
nationals rings a bell?
meanwhile i hope gib snags the big aypussie.
oops fat fingers…
aussie
finally…what an upgrade.
to preface, i like tony tuioti and i thought kaumeyer was fine person.
our staff ahas come along leaps and bounds of late.
jordan. wynn fulltime with qbs and in the booth vs non-existent oc
kurt gouveia vs tony tuioti
doug clune vs kaumeyer
naeole vs who was it?
all appears to be upgradesb
cocobean — your #337 got it and Al didn’t have to confess to anything. 🙂
I used to play nickel machines at Island Que during my UH years and after…which is probably why I never found slot machines very exciting.
old808 ..tink you forgot about kapiolani bowl, stardust lanes, and ewa bowl.
#311 St Anthony Trojan.
Sam and I had lunch about 2x a week for some 40-50 years
#307 Truman
Because the club obviously wasn’t very selective 😉
