Staffer is departing

By mutual agreement, Juan Lozano is leaving the Hawaii football program.

Lozano reportedly has accepted a job in Florida.

Lozano served as the Warriors’ director of player development. Last week, he worked as the coordinator of UH’s pro day in Carson, Calif.

Lozano is a friendly guy who works hard. Wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Head coach Norm Chow said there are no immediate plans to fill the position. Applications are not being accepted at this time.

Mike Trapasso will be the featured speaker at the Hukilau Honolulu today. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. with the program to start at noon.

The $20 admission includes a buffet lunch.

Great game Wahine Softball Team, last evening. Could have won it. Not the end of the world. Just learn from it, and apply what you learned when it really counts, NCAA tournament time.

Good effort by the Wahine, but kudos to the Texas pitcher that kept the Wahine off-balance and guessing for the entire game.

Whew! I tot I broke da blog yestaday. It’s hard to imagine anyone not wanting to work with this exciting new coaching crew.

I’m hoping that our very own resident expert in these matters will be considered for the job. Everyone who has followed College football recruiting knows that if she is able, she can help you clear the cob webs.

    ‘Nuff sed.

    Wow! That was quick!

Less than 2 months on the job and Juan already moving on!.

Oh well!….so much for a smooth transition for next year’s Pro Day…..since Juan was the only official representative of UH that attended March 5th.

  24. Garret March 14, 2012 8:53 am

Best wishes to Juan Lozano. I am a little uncomfortable about why UH isn’t filling his position–is this a budget-saving thing to leave that position open? It can set a bad precedent for UH to say that we don’t need this position for awhile, as then the Warriors could be asked to eliminate the position completely.

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

  26. Couch potato March 14, 2012 8:56 am

i guess some things are more important than a deadline.

  27. Garret March 14, 2012 8:57 am

It looks like the Big 12 is going to get similar TV money to the other major conferences, nearly matching the Pac-12. When you consider that Big 12 schools like Texas ($15 mil/year) and Kansas ($6+ mil/year) make a tremendous amount of money from their Tier 3 (local TV) deals, some Big 12 schools could actually make more TV money than Pac-12, SEC, and Big 10 schools.

The Big 12 could possibly make more money by waiting 4.5 years for their TV deal to expire with ESPN, but it sounds like they are taking $5 mil/year more now with the option to earn more later if they expand.

The Big 12 is on the verge of a blockbuster TV contract that will put its media revenue among the top tier of college conferences, despite losing several marquee programs in the last two years.

The Big 12 and ESPN are nearing an extension that will earn the conference — combined with its Fox TV contract — $2.5 billion over the next 13 years, according to industry sources. The ESPN extension would run through 2025 and sync up with Fox’s deal.

Under the new terms, each Big 12 school will average just under $20 million a year. Schools in the Pac-12, which also partnered with ESPN and Fox to generate its record $3 billion deal over 12 years, will average nearly $21 million per school.

    http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Special-Content/News/2012/Big-12-ESPN.aspx

  28. Garret March 14, 2012 8:58 am

The TV deal could end Big 12 expansion, which could create some stability in conference realignment.

Additionally, the new media revenue could effectively end any discussion of the Big 12 expanding back to 12 teams, not the news that the University of Louisville wanted to hear. The Cardinals had been positioned as a strong candidate to join the Big 12 if it expanded.

  29. kapakahi March 14, 2012 8:59 am

    “By mutual agreement”……Hmmmm!

BTW, that’s how Mack “retired”…..by mutual agreement too.

  30. Garret March 14, 2012 9:01 am

There was another report that each Big 12 school could earn more money under the new contract if the Big 12 expands to 12 schools…that would be great for those 2 schools (my guess is BYU and Louisville), but then we’d have to deal with another round of realignment dominoes.

  31. 808Bowler March 14, 2012 9:18 am

    Morning everyone.

  32. HiloBilly March 14, 2012 9:53 am

Panaewa Shon! We had a great time at your mom & dad’s after last year’s spring practice. Have a nice, ‘calm’ visit w/ your uncle (is ‘calm’ even in DPK’s vocabulary?). We’re in Mililani visiting our son & family, heading back to ITO tomorrow, had a wonderful spring break here.

Imua, softball Wahine, good to be tested & to see how you stand against these ranked teams!

  33. Derek March 14, 2012 10:11 am

Tough loss for the Wahine. One swing of the bat (the 2 run homer) on a 3-2 pitch was it as far as I’m concerned. Plus, it was 2 outs when Scott hit the dinger. To me, it probably should have come down to a 1-0 game. Both teams’ batters had difficulties with the pitching. Luna was excellent. Ricketts was her usual. I thouht the Wahine batters were hitting from their heels and trying for home runs, rather than just trying to make some contact. 16 strikeouts are a lot. But I have to say the Wahines didn’t get cheated. They took their cuts. Unfortunately, they missed them a lot. Wahines had their chances, but couldn’t execute when counted. The 3 errors were big too in a close game against top competition. Wartner had a great game. Hope for better results tonight against Marist.

  34. DaveLetterMan March 14, 2012 10:24 am

The loss was disappointing especially with the chance to score in the first few innings. A loss doesn’t define a season especially after winning 21 straight before it. They played hard so they shouldn’t hang their heads. Learn from it and move on to the next game. Go Wahine!

  35. tom mui March 14, 2012 10:44 am

ST, thank you for the article on “DEMO” today. It surely provided content that defines this coach. Ever since he was selected (perhaps, a little before), he was in an instant, a coach added to my must see, watch list.

STs requires countless hours of prep and detail. Great coaches add hypothetical contingencies into their preparartion, leaving little for chance. Great coaches study trends and look for vunerabilities in other teams and have a timely sense to exploit it.

Another trait of great ST coaching is an innate ability of its coach in selecting particular players with special assests to play special roles on STs. The most well-known of these roles are returners, long snappers, gunners and kick blockers.

But, there are more in the formula that make special teams a weapon.

I can hardly wait to see who Coach demo selects to man his teams.

Im feeling Demo is such a coach.

    We shall see….

  38. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2012 10:59 am

    jkjones:

Chow said Demo’s new, new nickname is “Tony Soprano.”

Might have something to do with the accent and Jersey upbringing.

    The T-shirt possibilities keep coming.

  39. Na Alii March 14, 2012 11:00 am

#20 Kekoa, there is more going on than meets the eye. My neighbor’s son is on the team, and he is a projected starter, not everything is perfect in Warrior football wonderland. The public wants to believe that Coach Chow is perfect, the truth is that he is normal like everyone else and has strengths and weaknesses. From what I have heard, in his office and with the team, he is not the pleasant guy you see speaking on the podium to the public. Not every player has bought in, which is typical, but over all the feeling is, he is going to be hard to play for and work for. Lets just all be patient if the warriors do not bring home many Ws, or better yet lets be fair and treat him just like Mac was treated if he has the same record. It seems perfect now because we are undefeated, how quickly will things change? You are right for a guy to be here a few months and then join a lower division team after spending most of his career at Div 1, it is hard to understand, other issues. Good luck to Lozano.

  40. jkjones March 14, 2012 11:04 am

The wahine had great opportunities to get to Luna. She went behind in the count many times and our batters couldnt connect. Unfortunately, Ricketts did too, and Texas capitalized. That was the difference. That will always be the difference between two good teams.

If you believe Luna was bad, wait till we face a designated Olmpic 2012 pitcher Calif will bring.

This is the stuff the wahine will have to beat if they aspire to make the trip to Oklahoma City. Fans are justing getting a sneak preview of what lays ahead….and the wahine got a good WHIFF on how much they need to improve to get there.

  41. Na Alii March 14, 2012 11:13 am

ST, you reported that the position won’t be filled? So Coach Chow wants to just let the position go? Our program is already behind with the number of Football operations support staff. If he lets it go, UH will never give it back, shoot we play USC, they have up to 15 admin staff specifically for football. What is our total? Can Doris S. get a chance?

  42. MattyBoy March 14, 2012 11:14 am

i’m sure there is someone or persons temporarily assigned to oversee the player’s personal development and academic matters. also, unless there is a real urgency, i don’t see a need to have a full-time liaison to the nfl at this time.

Coach Chow seems to have a full schedule and will soon be entering spring camp. there’ll be a time when Coach Chow can revisit the interviewing and selection of another director of player development.

  46. A-House March 14, 2012 11:33 am

  49. d1shima March 14, 2012 11:38 am

What were his duties outside of Pro Day?

  50. jkjones March 14, 2012 11:53 am

Look anyone that knows Norm Chow is aware he can be crusty and demanding.

Anyone that knows MAC can tell you if you are drinking with him late at night–he will call your wife and let her know you are safe.

Most fans are looking for the bottomline, not a popularity contest.

As experienced as is Chow as a coach, this will mark his first venture as top gun.

He needs to grow into his role. That goes for his players too.

Know this, Coach Chow wont lay any expectation on his players he didnt lay on himself as one.

Granted, during Chow’s boyhood, Lucky Luck and Capt Kangaroo was in fashion and not Snooki and Lady Gaga. Times have changed.

But, football still remains a timeless game of discipline, training and hard hitting.

It transcends the generation gap. Nothing has changed except they allow players to drink water during hot summer practices and jogging off the field with broken bones is prohibited.

If Hawai’i players are not receiving Adlerian positive reinforcement they are otherwise accostumed to, it’s because Chow is retro-styled and rewards players for accomplishment through deed, not vibe.

Coach has to turn around a program where long-haired, tatooed athletes, were lionized more for looking the look than walking the talk.

Strap up studs….and look for someone to hit on the field…it beats wailing.

  51. Don Weir (We-Ah) March 14, 2012 12:08 pm

Director of Player Personnel is a UH Football Staff position but it is paid for in total by Na Koa

  52. RedZone March 14, 2012 12:11 pm

And that is why our special teams coach has yet to see Hawaii.

  53. Na Alii March 14, 2012 12:12 pm

#50, Totally agree, Glad you said it “Most fans are looking for the bottomline, not a popularity contest.” Can’t wait to see the bottom line, Ws Vs Ls, or Ls vs Ws….right now all we hear about is how great things are, how perfect things are, it has only been a popularity contest.

  54. Na Alii March 14, 2012 12:15 pm

#51, Thanks Don, would you happen to know how many total administrative staff members do we have specifically for football? Football ops, player personnel, quality control, executive secretary?…etc

Al, I’m rootin fo you!

  57. al March 14, 2012 12:21 pm

    two things…

one, i think what is meant about the director of football opearations position is that they will replace him, but, right now the focus is probably on spring training. once that is rolling a little more time may be afforded toward the hiring of a suitable replacement.

two, in any endeavor there will be those who you can please most of the time and some who you cannot please at all. so, take it for what’s worth.

three, i am thinking that he who laughs last, last best. who ever said that was a genius.

  58. innocent observer March 14, 2012 12:26 pm

you know that hawaii is in strong contention for that young man’s abilities, otherwise, this tug-o-war would not be happening.

like the jury that is hung in deadlock, it must be apparent to many that the heart is not about to give up this decision and those that support conventional wisdom will last only for so long without the heart.

  60. Don Weir (We-Ah) March 14, 2012 12:30 pm

    Na Alii,

I am not privy to the total number of personnel dedicated to football.

Off the top of my head the count includes:

    coaches,

    ops manager/Admin Asst

    video techs(2)

    Dir Player Personnel (Na Koa)

    tutor (Na Koa)

    % of Equip Mgr

    GA’s

  61. Na Alii March 14, 2012 12:33 pm

#58, But in the Pros, NBA, NFL etc, if you wait to be fired, your buy out is much better because it was built into the contract at the beginning. By resigning mutual agreement really means, “agreeing to leave now and take less money” In the Big leagues and in Div 1 college sports, coaches are “Hired to be fired” the nature of the beast. No more Tom Landrys or Jopas left, you don’t win in 2 to 3 seasons, you are out, average life span.

  62. Na Alii March 14, 2012 12:42 pm

#60, Thanks Don, I think you are very close, I also think it is another very clear example as to how far behind our football program is, if we want the same excellence that other Div 1 football programs have then UH needs to provide the same support for Coach Chow, (Its up to him to create a good work environment and retention and low staff turn over, that’s another issue) but UH has a small point of view (make more with less) but realistically that will not cut it if they want a football program to compete at the highest levels for a sustained amount of time. JJ did more with less, got to a BCS game but he knew there could be no sustainability without more support and infrastructure. UH admin still has not learned, we are still showing up to the gun fight with knives.

  66. al March 14, 2012 1:01 pm

i am hoping that kamalei correa will also announce his choosing of the warriors. a couple of years ago mrs. correa did state that, “He was born to be a Warrior.”

la’anui and now haku correa are warriors of the same family.

  67. Na Alii March 14, 2012 1:07 pm

Sounds like Issac and his dad want to experience a higher education and first class facilities, can’t blame them, Bless them on their journey. Some will stay, some will go. If UH does not upgrade everything, more will go. Can’t only sell Old school work ethic and discipline. In these times it is a balance of Old school work ethic, discipline with bling, and inspiration. That is what sells. Shoot I am old school, I loved my old 1979 Ford truck, it was a tank, a beast, all I need to work and travel, but my son is going to by a Ford Raptor, front and back cameras, ford sync, wifi, you name it. That is what they want, a blend of the past with the future in mind. UH admin wants our staff to be used car salesmen.

I’ve been on the outside and the inside of UH. I now get to watch from the sidelines after retiring (again).

UH, both upper and lower campus, has faced significant Admin turnover and budget constraints in a short time period (10-15 years). Presidents, Chancellors, AD’s, and coaches have been part of a revolving door over this time period.

On lower campus the budget problems and their root causes predated the Frazier era. These problems have a significant cost: lost income, lessened support, lack of direction. Legal disputes, lawsuits, coaching buyouts also have taken their toll on finances as well as fan support. And this is over a significant amount of time so change will take longer than anticipated.

We have a dynamic AD who understands the bottom line and the need to strive for excellence. This will happen only if JD is unfettered by the old guard of the old school. His vision is shared by his working Admin team but the going is slow due to processes, bureaucratic lack of inertia, and political hobbling.

What are the ++’s so far? (not in a priority listing)

    1. Admin team working at 99.999% capacity with fewer support staff,

    2. Solid coaching staffs with 1 new hire soon

    3. Increased season ticket sales and projected attendance

    4. Coach’s offices upgrades

    5. Ching complex renovations back on track

    6. Student/athlete graduation rates and GPA’s at a high level

    7. New league alignments & lower travel costs

    8. Student Athletic fee in place

    9. Increased expectations by fans for programs

10.Blogging more about UH Athletic Dept positives than 2nd guessing decisions

    11. More cooperation between UH Foundation and UH Athletic support groups

I was humbled to be given a scholarship to attend UH and I am proud to be a Warrior!

  82. al March 14, 2012 1:54 pm

mcb…at this point, with only two left in the running, if you (the school) stick to a strict deadline then you have lost out. may as well just hang around in case you get to go to the prom.

#7 is lower travel costs for the new league confirmed or are you wistfully speculating?

#5 prove to perspective donors that the delay experienced will never happen again.

#4 how long did that take?

#3 they have been in record decline, a spike in sales, only says the bleeding is slowing.

#1 what does that translate to in terms of overall production?

if you want true perspective, frequent some of the sports bars/clubs in Honolulu….

My advice to FF is simple-you obviously will be happy at either school-and neither school is obviously perfect for you. The key point is at one school you will start and shine and be developed. In the other school, you’re just a number. Remember what Les Miles said about the kid who de-committed from LSU to go to N Dame–Les Miles has no class, you are just a number to him. Whereas with Hawaii, you represent Polynesia, a State, and a way of life-a culture–including his culture.

Decide. If you don’t someone else will decide for you and you may not like the outcome. It is a fact that if Hawaii fills the void, LSU could then say “why don’t you walk on, pay your own way, and if you’re good enough we’ll give you scholie. Hawaii is already in his hands here and now and he should take it. I think UH has shown more then enough commitment and in fact is probably helping him and saving him more then he realizes by keeping the offer open still.

If UH moves on LSU or any other school could then turn the tables on FF knowing he may then have a hard time finding a school he will like? Football is business and this scenario can and probably will happen.

FF: Don’t let the worst case scenario happen, be smart and take what’s on the table here and now-good luck

Yeah, they do not know which end of the camera to look through but they were telling me what and how to teach photography. Finally beat them back when I brought up the budget to purchase the equipment to do what they wanted.

    Silly people.

Isaac S and Reeve Koehler were both offered by Kansas yesterday. Charlie Weis wants to hit Hawaii and Samoa big time. Not sure how successful he will be but he’s giving it his best shot

In games today at wahine softball stadium, No 1 CALIF extended their consecutive winning streak to 22 with a 3-0 victory over No 21 Texas A&M in the brunch game.

No 6 Texas ripped Winthrop 7-1 and T A&M rebounded with a 5-0 shutout over Marist.

The wahine are looking to cat bounce against Marist in the 6:30 pm night cap.

The game will be televised on O12.

  102. jkjones March 14, 2012 5:20 pm

samoans and hawai’i are no strangers to charlie weis–he recruited manti te’o for the irish.

he also went after the san mateo kid for KU.

  103. al March 14, 2012 5:37 pm

mr. jones…manti te’o is tongan/hawaiian and the san mateo kid is tongan.

  104. jkjones March 14, 2012 5:59 pm

thanx al, i knew Monti was part-hawaiian, my cousin married a Te’o.

I overlooked the big guy, of course, Lewis Powell was the contact. Anyway, Charlie Weis knows about polynesian players: Tongan, Samoan or Hawaiian, as they have accounted well for themselves in college football.

    Kekoa . . .

Snow arrived yesterday. 3″ on the ground in about 2 hours. Thankfully the sun came back and melted the snow away. Today it snowed on the East side of the Peninsula. Some places getting more than several inches.

  106. wafan March 14, 2012 6:09 pm

Another committee! I thought JD was going to hire quickly so as to not hinder the new Wahine coach recruiting time.

Or is the committee a shibai?

  107. jm2375 March 14, 2012 6:15 pm

wafan – in the world of higher education hiring, there’s always a committee.

  108. Kevin March 14, 2012 6:21 pm

Here we go ladies. Get one for Kaia and Lauren tonight!

  109. Na Alii March 14, 2012 6:24 pm

#112, If JD was so pleased with Coach Dana, why not give her the dignity to share some time with her team and seniors after their last college game, he could have had a meeting with her when they flew back to Hawaii. What was the rush that she had to be given that blow right after the game. Last game of the season should be about the kids and the seniors specifically, not adding salt to the wound by announcing the firing of the coach. He seams to be a bit clumsy, what was the rush, it is not like they are rushing now right? JD has stumbled a number of times. Remember this is the guy that (with the selection committee majority vote) picked Dirk Koetter as the new football coach, not Norm Chow. So every time I heard him say “We got the right guy, our guy” I just can’t help to think, what a hypocrite. I bet if the warriors don’t win at a high rate he will think, “should of went with Dirk” he probably won’t admit it though.

  112. Na Alii March 14, 2012 6:30 pm

#113, as with the last committee, the football committee, we all know in the end all their work means nothing because they will go through a long detailed process, present the top candidate and then some old lady on the hill will say, “hmmm, I like the other guy, lets go with him.” By the way is she even still on campus? Wasn’t she a lamb duck anyway, on the way into retirement? Did anyone ever wonder who might have been in Henshaw’s ear telling her who to pick, advising her to pull her veto card? I guess she did it all on her own right…..lol

  120. Na Alii March 14, 2012 7:50 pm

#122, papajoe2, the truth is the truth, Not many folks like to hear it. Anything good to say? Yes, I do, I love the heart and perseverance of our players on all of our teams weather they win or lose. I work hard and buy tickets and go to games to support them, I donate regularly to the teams, I love to see our players grow and develop under great leadership when we have it, I love to see them have great life lasting experiences and lessons they can pass on to their kids. That’s pretty good right? and all that aside, I am also a realist, like you say, “it is what it is” There is a barrier at UH that prevents our athletic department from reaching true division one excellence. The barrier is based on smoke and mirrors to create an illusion of a true pursuit of excellence and that it will be provided by the University like at many other institutions of higher learning (not all) but the ones UH claims to want to compete with and “chase championships” with. The real losers are not the fans, but the student-athletes that are sold that illusion and who in the end, do a great job of showing resilience at making the most of their learning experience during their time here. “It is what, it is” …..

  121. papajoe2 March 14, 2012 7:50 pm

So sorry for Kaia and her family. Tutu definately watching from above and guiding her to good things.

why don’t you give him some positive strokes? just on his lifetime body of work, he’s earned that much respect. and every single #1 was a #2 or lesser befo dat.

  124. BigHiloFan2 March 14, 2012 8:06 pm

    kden

going take a break fo awhile. hope da Hnl SA no turn off da comments wen i come back.

  125. papajoe2 March 14, 2012 8:16 pm

Na Alii, yup, you and I support UH whole heartly, its just that it seems like you want every local person to not play for UH. I know everything about the program is not up to the standards of the BCS schools, that makes millions of $$ from TV contracts and such. I thought that the football and the athletic programs stalled for the last few years and haven’t really advanced as much as we (the fan) wanted, although I’m super happy that we have a very high graduation percentage. I’m not sure that Coach Chow is the answer but I’m willing to give him a chance. It seems like he has a vision of what it would take to take for us to be nationally respected. He has traveled and coached all over the U.S. and knows the difference between what we have now and where we want to be. Not all of us will be happy with the decisions that he makes as we probably are accustomed to the past 13 years of the “Jones” type of system. Even Coach Jones got fustrated with the

State “system” and left mainly because of such. Coach Chow’s disciplined type of coaching and running the program, may or may not be good for the program. I am anxious to see a different method of practicing too. As far as he getting all the things needed from our State, that remains to be seen. I guess we will find out in 3 or 4 years, but lets give him a chance and the support he needs.

  126. Kevin March 14, 2012 8:28 pm

  132. jkjones March 14, 2012 9:22 pm

UH said Gay Satsuma, Al Chee, Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano and Carl Clapp will assist athletic director Jim Donovan in the search for a successor to Dana Takahara-Dias.

Moniz was on the last selection committee that lateraled to Mufi near the goal line in overtime.

    So much for integrity.

Isnt Dr Satsuma a part of CJS?

Great, now we have a no-nothing committee fluent in Japanese that punts on 3rd and one in the redzone.

JK, it looks like a rubba stamp job….I hope???

  148. slenzi March 15, 2012 2:34 am

Wow, i observe that Na Alii no likee dat. Must be thousand Na Alii alums wishing he had a different handle. Anyway, as I say, far too often, to my wife, “Yes, I DO understand, but you can’t just keep rubbing people’s noses in it until they either agree with you or are sick of you.” Then I usually ask her what she wants in the end, an Ohana that shares Aloha and Kokua, and is able to make things Pono, or if she wants a dysfunctional pool of selfish people around her. Someone may ask Na Alii the same questions about the Warriors. If we make the Warrior community stronger by “frank discussion without any personal agenda”, then why do we need to beat the dead horse. Need to look up ho’o’ponopono in that old sixth grade Hawaiian history book.
