Mack: "Contact right off the bat"

Head coach Greg McMackin promised that spring training, which begins March 31 will have “contact right off the bat.”

McMackin said he wants to emphasize more physical practices to prepare the Warriors for aggressive run-oriented opponents.

McMackin also said:

• The Warriors will have four scrimmages during spring training.

• The Warrior Bowl will be held April 30 on the UH campus.

• Every practice will end with an overtime-like drill emphasize situations like fourth-and-2, etc.

• Clayton Laurel, who was projected to be the No. 2 left tackle, suffered a broken wrist that will require a rehabilitation period of between six and eight weeks. Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, who was projected to play left guard, will move to left tackle.

* * * * *

As promised, there is open competition at every  football position. But for organizational purposes, there are “starting points” (the order of reps). Here are the projected “starting points” for the opening of spring practice (March 31).

Left wideout: Joe Avery, Darius Bright.

Left slotback: Greg Salas, Dustin Blount.

Left tackle: Austin Hansen, Chauncy Winchester-Makainai.

Left guard: Brett Leonard, Andrew Faaumu.

Center: Matagisila Lefiiti, London Sapolu/Bronson Tiwanak.

Right guard: Adrian Thomas, Brysen Ginlack.

Right tackle: Laupepa Letuli, Kainoa LaCount.

Right slotback: Kealoha Pilares, Ryan Henry.

Right wideout: Royce Pollard, Billy Ray Stutzmann.

Quarterback: Bryant Moniz, Shane Austin, Brent Rausch

Running back: Alex Green, Chizzy Dimude.

Of course, when he is fully recovered, Rodney Bradley should be the No. 1 left wideout. UH also is awaiting for word on Laupepa Letuli’s appeal for a medical hardship that will allow him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2010.

    RedZone,

Not to get too offensive but….tomorrow.

  11. Kazz March 24, 2010 8:16 am

Interesting that Brett Leonard in penciled in at a guard position as opposed to a tackle position on the left side. 😯

I would think that the praise Leonard received with his footwork would be an indication that agility would be added to the left tackle position.

Hansen’s gonna have his work cut out for him then. Not really saying that Leonard is the FAR better choice at tackle, but would be interesting to see how that plays out this spring.

  17. RedZone March 24, 2010 8:34 am

I like the huge guards on the inside. I would rather see a pass rush from the outside than up the middle. This should also help the running game.

  18. djmitcho March 24, 2010 8:35 am

Good Morning All! I hope everyone has a good day. With Salas and Pilares in the slots, and Bradley coming back on the outside, the offense has the potential to put up some great numbers. I hope the O-Line is ready to work hard to help make it happen.

  19. Kazz March 24, 2010 8:37 am

Is “Happy Ooof Day” a bit too much? 😆

    Monsieur Tsai,

Any thoughts as to newcomers who will be challenging to crack the two deeps?

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid March 24, 2010 8:49 am

    DJmitcho-
Yup, the O-line is gonna be key. I’m predicting that a combination of seasoned players and Coach Shaw’s coaching is gonna pay off big for them.

  27. ai-eee-soos March 24, 2010 8:56 am

Like the looks of the o-line.

Austin Hansen at LT is very interesting. He filled in very well at RT,

while previously taking most reps at LG/RG.

Big guards – getting to look like Big 10 line.

Next big center might be Cody K.

    Can’t wait for next week.

  28. NYUH March 24, 2010 8:58 am

Hoping that Malcolm Lane will come through for the Fall, but glad to see some other potential stars: Joe Avery, Darius Bright, Billy Ray Stutzmann will get their chance. Of course Royce Pollard, has already proved he can play and Bradley is The Man.

  29. ai-eee-soos March 24, 2010 9:04 am

    re # 15.

Can always flip flop Austin Hansen and Brett Leonard.

Yup, really looking forward to spring ball.

There is a sense of urgency – the LA guys are coming to town,

    not too long from now.

  30. Pride. March 24, 2010 9:07 am

Wow, that’s a big offensive line. Even DPK should be able to run, or walk, behind that offensive line.

  31. Pomai March 24, 2010 9:07 am

ST is the QB position really open to all of them? I still think David Graves is a sleeper. Only 7 more days till we get to see a little action.

  32. A-House March 24, 2010 9:08 am

as wafan says, “whoo hoo” spring is in the air ( don’t mean the lovey dovey kine ) – football, babeee!

  33. Pride. March 24, 2010 9:09 am

Looking for big things from Darius Bright.

  34. A-House March 24, 2010 9:10 am

Dayton M reported that coach Gib received 105 tex and voice mail messages on his 5-hour flight to the West Coast.

I thought flight over the Pacific Ocean was a “dead zone” – no incoming or outgoing – how far am I off base? did I get picked off?

  35. NYUH March 24, 2010 9:10 am

Not to mention our All-American slots: Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares. Mahalo to Pilares for filling in at WR last season. Hopefully it will make him a better slot.

  36. Pride. March 24, 2010 9:10 am

Good to see the young Billy Ray in the two deep “starting points” list.

  39. NYUH March 24, 2010 9:23 am

Spring? The evolutionary advantage of being human is that we are always thinking about mating.

With all due respect to our Miami boys, this may be the best WR corps we have ever had.

  40. A-House March 24, 2010 9:25 am

Thanks, d1. No problem for me as no one calls and I don’t have text capabilities; to complicated for me and I “cheap”!

  59. Manoa March 24, 2010 10:07 am

I think this will be a good football season.
Mack is not a dummy, but he had to learn to be a head coach and a lot of the guys on his staff had a lot to learn as well.
It is unblievable what a little experience will do for someone in their job– all of us should think about our jobs and our bosses and what a difference experience makes in what we can accomplish.
Team should be better in every way and some players and coaches– like Gordy Shaw and Arranda, Rolo and Ron Lee should be a lot more confident, make better decisions and execute much, much better.

You guys are really getting me jacked up for football! And with me, it doesn’t take much.

DPK on # 26 – You’re right on the money and I feel the O-Line will be in line for some vindication. With any semblance of protection, Moniz & Co. WILL put up the numbers & make it a lot tougher for opponents. Kiffin, esp. is the type of coach that will run the score up on you if it’s humanly possible. I would love it if
UH turns the tables on him & forces USC to play catch-up. Also woul;d like to see our D pressure their QB into making mistakes. Yeah, I know I may only be dreaming..do me a favor…don’t wake me up.

  81. Garret March 24, 2010 1:09 pm

I hope that Clayton Laurel recovers fully soon and has no lingering effects from his injury during the summer conditioning period. It is too bad that he will miss the spring practices…UH needs a lot of depth in the OL.

This is an opportunity for Chauncy Winchester-Makainai to get extra reps and move up in the eyes of the coaches. Gordy Shaw will be watching him closely, I’m sure.

  89. PIAA DS March 24, 2010 1:37 pm

Hi everyone, Stephen, thanks for posting the info on the golf tourney.

Where is Cal, Ron and Dave? Well, they’ll be driving the beer carts of course! And when they are not driving, look for them at the grill (eating or grilling, one or the other) Tony is on the bid list too, just receive confirmation.

The NCAA and UH has given us permission, there will be several players there, not in a golfing capacity, but a very fun capacity! example: drop a few bucks as a donation and a QB will throw the ball and thats where you will tee-off from! Talk about an advantage. Permission to invite players given, permisson to participate given, but not to advertise their names.

Please help us out! If you golf, this is going to be a fun day. If you dont, tell your family and friends. Plus there are really some awesome prizes. UH Football supports what PIAA does, I do hope the tsaiko’s can too. We really need the funding this year, more than ever.

for info on the tourney and bidding: http://www.pacificathleticalliance.com

Maybe it’s just me but I’m more interested in seeing changes in the pre practice routine for the players. In seasons past many reported as I’ve witnessed as well, the relaxed style of stretching and pre practice sprints and whatnot.

I think at this early on in the year this will have more of a positive or God forbid a negative effect on how we do come fall as opposed to hitting “right off the bat”.

Looking at the O-line, get some solid beef and some height. I feel bad for the opposing D-line and our QB. Going have to get thru all that mass and the QB gotta look over those tree’s. What a beautiful thing our O-line can become this year.

  120. d1島 March 24, 2010 3:36 pm

    Kazz,

Lots of ’em have “colorful” histories.

The historical period dates back to the Great Plague of London in 1665 (bubonic plague) or even before when the first outbreak of the Plague hit England in the 1300’s. The symptoms of the plague included a rosy red rash in the shape of a ring on the skin (Ring around the rosy). Pockets and pouches were filled with sweet smelling herbs ( or posies) which were carried due to the belief that the disease was transmitted by bad smells. The term “Ashes Ashes” refers to the cremation of the dead bodies!

  121. wafan March 24, 2010 3:36 pm

    I have to confess.

As a teacher I am kinda dumb. We had a halfday so we could prepare for conferences. Instead, I had kids coming in for additional help and just to sit and talk. Finally asked the kids to leave around 5 and just got home after going crazy to get ready for tomorrow.

Geez, you would think some people would learn not to keep repeating the same error every year. HA!

The *overwhelming* majority of D-IA football head coaches prefer the bowl system over a playoff and actually *like* the BCS system.

Head coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision continue to overwhelmingly support the current postseason bowl system over a playoff according to results of the AFCA’s recently completed FBS Head Coaches Survey.

There was also strong support for the current BCS selection process and use of the AFCA’s Coaches Trophy as the BCS Championship Trophy.

    • Ninety-three percent of the 117 FBS head coaches who responded to the survey prefer the traditional bowl system over a playoff.

    • Eighty-five percent are in favor of the current BCS team selection process.

  152. Garret March 24, 2010 6:30 pm

93% of head coaches prefer the bowl system over a playoff!

85% like the BCS selection process! This means that the vast majority of coaches in conferences like the WAC, C-USA, Sun Belt, and MAC like the BCS selection process…

Even worse, the University Presidents may like the BCS system more than the coaches.

Understand, coaches won’t make any decisions about changing the postseason structure; college presidents will (I haven’t seen a survey of college presidents, but the overwhelming sense is they’re even more in favor of retaining the current structure than the coaches are). But if there was a strong wave of support for change among coaches, it would be seen as significant. This opposite sentiment should be, too.

Although I’ll be coming back into Honolulu from the Stadium Authority meeting around noon tomorrow, I’ll be traveling by bus and won’t be able to get to the restaurant because it’s on a military base.

Re an earlier post from yesterday challenging my use of the terms blog and post: I am no newby to the concept. I first started a blog on July 4, 1999, and kept it going until December 31, 2006, when it jbecame too overwhelming for just one person to keep it going. We had all kinds of high tech stuff going on, but I couldn’t keep up physically or psychologically doing everything by myself.

Accoding to most professionals in the field, the person who creates the blog – such as Stephen’s writing above – is the blogger. What I am currently writing is either a post or a comment; however, I do not consider myself a blogger nor is this post a blog.

However, I do acknowledge that terminology and lexicon will change over time so that some of you may indeed consider yourself a blogger even if you do not have your own site with your own domain name.

Some positive news on the eyeballs – there’s been some significant improvement so any decision about surgery has been moved back until early May. Still cannot drive and still cannot get back into contacts for several more months, but at least things are moving in the right direction. Because the vision changes are so unstable, I can’t even get prescription glasses although I did pick up a couple of pairs of over-the-counter reading glasses at Costco. Now I can read without using a magnifying glass as well – except the darned telephone directory.

    Back to work.

    By Brooks Baehr

MANOA (HawaiiNewsNow) – When Rainbow Wahine softball coach Bob Coolen recruited Kelly Majam, he knew he was getting a special player.

But I doubt anyone knew she’s be this good this fast. Majam has made defensive plays that have turned games in Hawaii’s favor. And she’s been red hot at the plate, a true freshman sensation.

“Putting her in the number one slot in our lineup is something we were looking at the whole time once we graduated Tanisha Milka last year,” Coolen said. “Someone to get on base, but also had the home run power to set the table and give us an instant run leading off the game. She’s done that and more or us.”

In 33 games this season, Majam is hitting 394. She’s got seven doubles, two triples and 15 home runs. That’s a lot for anyone in just 33 games, but for a freshman who stands just 5-foot-3, 15 homers is amazing.

“When I hit I use my whole body. I’m not very big. I think that’s where it comes from. I just try my hardest,” Majam said.

Majam may set a new school record for home runs. Kate Robinson hit 21 long balls two years ago. That’s the record now. But at her current pace, Majam will hit 24 or 25.

“I take it one at bat at a time and one game at a time,” she said. “I’m not really pushing for a certain number. If it comes it comes and I’m really happy with it.”

Coolen recruited Majam out of Pine Valley, California, just east of San Diego.

But in December of 2008, she tore her ACL. She missed all of last season, but instead of allowing her to stew over her injury, Coolen took her on road trips even through she couldn’t play.

“It made her anxious to really get out there because she saw that we were so competitive,” Coolen said. “We were so close to making things come to fruition in regards to winning the WAC.”

The Wahine finished a half a game out of first place last year. This year, with Majam’s help, they may win the WAC.

The conference season starts Friday against San Jose State.

Gotta have a credible coach, someone who can recruit and inspire youth. Obviously, Big Mac fails. That’s the way it is. I support UH, I’m alumni, but I won’t buy a ticket to aloha stadium till they put a good product on the field. I know all you guys are gonna tell me I’m not a true fan, I’m a bandwagon fan, but, when you have a poor product, I’m not supporting it and not wasting my money. So you’re nieve to be wasting your money supporting a crap coach. Don’t support the coach, that will eventually get him removed, and hopefully, someday, we’ll get someone like June again. aloha

    JM,

I feared the Warrior Bowl’s date from a while ago regardless of the location.

Get Baseball and the Wahine have game one at 6pm against defending WAC champion Fresno State. This will be their last regular season game before the WAC tournament.

Hard to spread one’s self out, but I’ll be taking another week off of work to watch a few days of practice mid April and baseball doesn’t end yet. So softball gets the nod.

Eh… who am I kidding. Would of went to softball regardless. 😎

Warrior Bowl equals practice scrimmage. Whereas, the Softball game pits our Wahine against those pesky, dirt farmers from Fresno. We’re talking WAC standings at stake here.
