Spring Fling

Who’s the No. 1 quarterback? What’s the progress of the new defensive schemes? Will Jeremiah Cockheran be the flag-footbal MVP?

The answers will be revealed at today’s Spring Fling at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex on the Manoa campus. The event wraps up four weeks of the Rainbow Warriors’ spring training.

Here’s the schedule:

Noon — Complex’s gates open.

1 p.m. — Youth clinic.

2 p.m. — Alumni flag-football game.

3 p.m. — UH warm-ups, drills.

3:30 p.m. — Scrimmage.

    A-House:
Of course you should go to Houston.
Make sure you stop by Goode’s Barbecue. It’s near the Rice campus.

  21. Stephen Tsai April 26, 2014 8:53 am

Then, of course, there’s the Galleria. Great stores and a skating rink.

  22. Warrior Dave April 26, 2014 8:54 am

    Good morning A-House,

You make a ono point for going to the Rice game. I remeber have some very good barbecue in Alabama. Have fun at the Spring Fling. I don’t know if I can make it. Hopefully someone will recap it.

  23. Stephen Tsai April 26, 2014 8:56 am

If you’re going to San Jose, join us as we hit wine country.

  24. Stephen Tsai April 26, 2014 9:00 am

    Re: BBQ
Then again, there was a time in Louisiana when “Ferd” said, “Mmm. That barbecue place looks really good.”
So we go in, and there are no waiters. There’s a guy who looks at us, with that what-the-ef-do-you-want look. So we ask for ribs. And the guy mutters and gets us two plates. Meanwhile, there are all these cars pulling up to the back of the place. Nobody comes into the “restaurant,” but they all appear to be doing some business in the back. And that’s when it dawned on us that we were either in a drug house or brothel and the “restaurant” was just a cover. But those were really good ribs. They also were probably the guy’s dinner and he had to give it to us because “Ferd” sorta-sorta looks like an FBI agent.

Boise State’s new Football Complex. Never mind the Pac-12, UH needs to catch up with MWC schools in the facilities race.

tommui…i found these short ribs at times last night. i was compelled to purchase them because there was twice the amount of fat vs red meat.

  31. al April 26, 2014 10:19 am

    true st.
one of these days you need to try the boss’ bbq ribs.
you can descend from the booth before kicloff can’t you?

  32. lesberealz April 26, 2014 10:29 am

@29 Thats why they have real players and we have like 20 walk ons and 24 transfers the other teams didnt want. Lets be real about this season. Watched UW’s spring practice and we have zero chance to beat them.

Lets pray for a 6 win season and be happy. We are never again going to get enough good players to come here under the new social media world. they all know our facilities suck, and if they dont they just watch for a tweet or facebook picture.

UH football will never again be a contender for anything. We should cheer the boys on and be happy with the entertainment value of it.

  33. Andrew April 26, 2014 10:31 am

    29

Hawaii was already behind the other MWC schools

  34. Jellybean April 26, 2014 10:37 am

Who came up with the name “Spring Fling” for the final spring event?

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid April 26, 2014 11:18 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Spring Fling! It’s a beautiful thing.

And its a real thing, with real players and coaches. I’ll be there to cheer them on!

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    GO WARRIORS!!!

  36. tommui April 26, 2014 11:23 am

    Congrats WAHINE! 7-5 win!

  37. bowwar April 26, 2014 11:25 am

Love to see the Spring Fling, but I’m too cheap to pay the $5 parking…Maybe, I’ll convince myself to go…

  38. tommui April 26, 2014 11:26 am

    #30 AL:

    When and what time? 🙂

  39. Kapahulu April 26, 2014 11:32 am

    Old School Dave:
Thanks for the link to the Boise State Football Complex. That was an eye opener, and that wasn’t even the Pac-12. Just goes to show what our Football Team is recruiting against.
Hopefully we can win some games and sell some more tickets to the games. Everyone can help by buying tickets. The team needs to do their job and win some games.
Too bad they are not televising the Spring Fling. They need the exposure and they could have tied it in to advance ticket sales.

  40. WarriorNY April 26, 2014 11:35 am

Thank you ST, Al and A-House…
For making me hungry as hell… haha

I hope you all are well!

  41. smallkahuna April 26, 2014 11:45 am

Why is Panda not putting together the San Diego trip as an UH/NFL package? UH plays SDSU on Oct 18th and the Charger/Chief plays the next day(Oct 19) at Qualcomm.
I will probably go on my own but still….I figure some of the older folks would like to go in groups with fellow Warrior fans that Panda provided in the past.

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid April 26, 2014 12:01 pm

    bowwar –

The parking fee is now $6 😉 But the good news is, if you pay for parking once, you can exit and re-enter without having to pay double.
    Hope you can make it!

  43. Old School Dave April 26, 2014 12:02 pm

    Kapahulu:
I wish that someone would have stepped up and televised the spring game/fling, too.

The transformation at Boise State is phenomenal. I still remember when they were Boise Junior College, then the Big Sky Conference.

boise, Idaho…nice facilities that Peterson built. pity the new coaching regime, tough billet to fill.

athletice complex, box seats, well, what else is there to do in boiss, Idaho?

  61. al April 26, 2014 1:28 pm

    tommui,,,first home game tailgate.

  62. Inyoface April 26, 2014 1:28 pm

Televising the spring fling would help the exposure of the team for mainland and neighbor island people that follow UH football and also future recruits. With technology now it shouldn’t be hard at all.

  63. al April 26, 2014 1:37 pm

televising the spring fling would not have much interest across the state at this time.
    1. its a practice not a game like the ones you see televised nationally. these folks have a real game in a real stadium. fans by the tens of thousands who attend and an alumni support group spanning the continent.

    2. that would compete with hs playoffs, nba playoffs, mlb, michelle wie, etc.

    3. how much sponsorship $$$ can we drum up?

    4. ppv? who would buy without monku-ing?

  64. boya_jr April 26, 2014 1:37 pm

    62. Yes, I want to see the Warriors scrimmage today. It took this experience for me to see what is needed. Inyoface, if there was anytime the fanbase could help with something small like providing equipment for this, I think this is a small investment with big impact. I’d be will to lead this over the summer. I’m sure for the sports with less coverage, this has been a need for some time.

  65. kawika49 April 26, 2014 1:46 pm

#57 At least todays announcer, never went to: The Waihee, Ariyoshi; School of Elocution.

  66. boya_jr April 26, 2014 1:49 pm

    63. This year, we thought small in a world that is thinking bigger. I remember going to the Green & White game with my dad for spring training. Showing Cooke Field, ok I can see why we are justified to have the game there and also it probably costs less than Aloha.

Interest? I have interest. Cost? I also did a group homework assignment using google hangout for free, using video conferencing. Internet broadcast could be done for free, and we have fans who would volunteer for the greater good.

There is Oceanic Time Warner, and if they are not available, rely on fans like us.

Anyways, what I’m seeing is some general indifference from younger people which is sad. I would have thought my Facebook posting to help with the video streaming of today’s game would garner more support. UH better understand real quick how Millennials are consuming entertainment. You would think that its second nature given the service they provide.

  67. boya_jr April 26, 2014 1:52 pm

    63. I can tell you that the Woosley ohana, or the families of our receivers, etc would love to see the live stream. Sometimes its the people who care the most that you need to help first, if its cost effective, which it is.

  68. DaveLetterMan April 26, 2014 1:57 pm

    Howzit, Tsaikos!
Safe spring fling for the warriors.
Thought ST gave the wrong link to the video. You gotta be patient and enjoy the ending.

    Nuts! I GOOFED!

The WAHINE was leading by two and SB was down to its last out. T:eye scored to tie and won by one in the 8th inning

ST….WHO is the other person in the booth with you….DR ?

  73. SteveM April 26, 2014 2:36 pm

    RE: #49

Not surprising since he can be the player identification guy, analyst, and color person all in one. 🙂

  74. st. anthony trojan April 26, 2014 2:55 pm

YES…..does not have to be live….sum station could tape…then show sunday sum time….maybe with head coach…offensive n defensive coach….n critique n evaluation done…sponsors would be no problem a pitch by Mr. BJ…with some of his ‘bait’ for his ‘added value’ for season ticket buyers…

UHAD is missing the boat …as usual… by their ‘manini’ thinking n not putting the fans first….
however…. that will never change….drastically ne way…it takes time till we get a ‘kick ass’ governor Mr.Yee back in the fold…n a Mr. W. Fujiyama….helping steer the floundering UHAD…..
    IMUA…..hope 4 a good n entertaining game…injury free of course…

  75. Amela April 26, 2014 3:06 pm

Did you see Mark Ho’omalu’s men do the kahiko last night? What do you think if they showed it on the jumbotron as the team makes their entrance to the field? That’s what I would call a pumped up warrior’s entrance. Show the team and see what they and the coaches think. And get permission from Mark to use it for home games. Awesome!

  76. Inyoface April 26, 2014 3:40 pm

Broadcasting and/or IT majors would be more than happy to hook it up and broadcast it as an intern job.

  77. st. anthony trojan April 26, 2014 4:00 pm

well # 76….then…why is it not done…why is the uhadnot thinking of doing it…for almost ne sport …’MANINI’ thinking maybe….or just don’t give a dammmmmmmm for fans ???

  78. Boya_jr April 26, 2014 4:35 pm

Internet streaming is something UHAD is thinking about doing. Just wish we had it for today. Since most football games are broadcasted the spring game was and will be one of the few times without coverage. However, for the other sports like softball, their boosters have used Internet streaming using the means we are talking about. Anyways, hope to see more of it.

  79. st. anthony trojan April 26, 2014 4:44 pm

Well definitely good news if so…so many ‘fans’ all over the world..
no news from ching field…hope it means good news…
or no one watching have smart phone…n wait till all pau…

Basebows got romped 17-4 by Fullerton on ESPNU.

  83. al April 26, 2014 5:55 pm

    boya, jr…my point in 63 is this;
we want big time stuff, myself probably more than many.
however, things cost money. we need more fans to attend the games, buy the apparel/memorabilia, and just support the programs in general.

donate to na koa, go to fund raisers, and the like.
more revenue indicates success and community support. we can’t just have a wish list. we have to be involved!

so, yes i hear you brother. but, we gotta step it up if we expect to even see uh football in the next century. the subliminal message was buried in that post.

    we cannot just grumble.
“eh, how come no more dis and no more dat?”.
“we no mo cuz no can…got kala?”

no matter if we are 1-11 or 11-1.
are you or your neighbors going to show up for the games?if yes, then you are a fan, truly just like me.

    …nuff said

  84. Inyoface April 26, 2014 6:14 pm

How was the game? Who shined?

  85. Boya_jr April 26, 2014 6:15 pm

Al, I totally agree with you. There’s the bigger ticket items and there are smaller ticket stuff that us individual and groups of fans could champion. Achievable 100 day plans. The video stream is something I started researching at work this past week (I also started asking for it), including searching on help websites to hire AV consultants on elance for this Saturday. Anyways, this is a project I would like to help UH with.

I live in SF and I have UH logos on my body and car. I’ll be attending a Hawaii Chamber of Commerce event in SF on Weds, I wonder how I can help promote UH issues particularly the Internet initiative which helps access for Mainland fans. I’ll find out by emailing the right people.

  86. LKB April 26, 2014 6:30 pm

Many of the national media have noted that Boise’s new facility would rank in the Top 3 of the Pac-12. It is no joke….and it shows in recruiting. This new staff at Boise has landed more 4-Star players in 5 months than Petersen did in 8 years….including one of the best high school QBs in the country in Brett Rypien. Make no mistake about it, these toys matter.

  87. NorthShoreFan April 26, 2014 6:50 pm

    Great spring scrimmage.
    Woolsey looked good.
    Defense was dominating most times.
Offense showed some things. Especially some newbies.
Penetito, well he rumbles, he make tacklers hurt, he makes the ground cry when he goes down, he moves the pile. He’s a manster who walks.
I would not want to tackle him.

    Flag game…Nate can still move.

Was good to see Tsaikos there. Gave a shout out when ST was named and had to do a encore by request from BC.

    Enjoyable day…oh and btw…Hawaii won!

  88. ai-eee-soos April 26, 2014 7:00 pm

  90. st. anthony trojan April 26, 2014 7:28 pm

Boya jr…good luck in ur endeavors there in SFO…sum times it seems like people at UHAD….just don’t seem to realize…they are thousands of people all over this world that are so very proud to say they are from Hawaii…n many bleed green ….n they need to address that….hope you will be the light ….like moses…n lead them out of the darkness…n open up their thinking…

Today was a missed opportunity for ‘connecting’ with many not living on Oahu to witness what ‘spring fling’…would have been a very nice gesture for our neighbors….here on this blog to witness it…even if was on sunday…which would have been a start…

Negative thinking n just grumbling like al states…is not good…however when you get so many complaints n negative feedback that is never address….people give up n not attend games…n wh3n Mr. BJ is negative…that is what happens…(closing yellow section) I have never seen the problems people have stated on here..(lines women restroom…prices of food n beer…etc) addressed on here by our AD..At least if he went to Stadium Authority n say some thing..it can be accepted by most…that he is trying…maybe he did n me not read….

There is so much help available…n those that would help in the community…but most of what they do…not to much are involved…like today…was great for the kids…for the flag football…but me ask…why not rent out booth space…n al could have been there grilling burgers…maybe whitey n his bunch could have maui onions (seconds small ones) donated by the kula farmers…n sell…have UH merchandise for sale…have other vendors sell goods n food..
maybe ask ek….bring one of his rides there….its all doable…but takes work…but they need to get more people involved….

    Good luck JR.

    IMUA

Re: The Fling thing… what North Shore Fan said! All that.

If I may add, the RBs look good. St. Juste is gonna be something special, same for Lakalaka. DSJ has added some good weight without sacrificing his speed or shiftiness looks much bigger and stronger, Lakalaka has leaned out and has increased speed and makes nice moves in the hole. Iosefa and Penitito in the same back field will be a sight to see! Add any of the backs to that equation and we are in good hands. Each of the backs have very distinctive styles and bring a lot to the table. Receivers have the potential – timing and execution will improve with reps.

Woolsey’s feet are a nice add for a QB, he had a beauty of a run for TD.

As noted, the defense dominated, especially early on. But, the offense found its rhythm, and began to move the chains. The defense has the grit and attitude you like to see – swarming and attacking. Why our secondary is called suspect, I don’t know.

Curran on the left and Tsai on the right did a great job announcing. Disappointing that the blog host pretended not to hear our requests for him to sing the national anthem and both verses of Hawai’i Ponoi to open the show. Amazing to see the big sports caster hiding in plain sight, as the announcer of the alumni game noted.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Great Morning All!

    All da Flinging is ovah.

Now the hard work begins. Hard because no TV crews show up for the summer workouts. No fans clamor for live video feeds of tape sessions in the football offices. Only the most dedicated will bother to follow the yeoman-like effort of reporting on the goings-on in the quarry between now and August.

    GO WARRIORS!

Woosley is the best we have right now. Higgins looked horrible. His arm is weak.
The QB situation will look ugly this year again. On a positive note Pedroza will be a stud and St Juste looks much bigger and did well. Defense…. I dunno the best player on the team was a guy that looked about 5 foot 3
