Spring Break: Manoa

opSpring break means sun and … fun?

For nearly 2 hours yesterday afternoon, slotback Quinton Pedroza and six teammates worked on drills at Ching field.

“Some people are on spring break,” cornerback Damien Packer said, “and some people are on spring work.”

Pedroza, who redshirted in 2013 after transferring from Utah, opted to spend UH’s spring break in Hawaii instead of visiting family in California.

“While people are having spring break on the beaches, we’re putting in overtime on this field,” Pedroza said. “We wake up, and the first thing on our mind is eating, and that’s not food. We want to eat these weights. We want to eat these field workouts. We’re getting this work for breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

Pedroza moved to Hawaii seven months ago. He said he does have beach outings at Waikiki, Sandy’s and Irma’s. But those stops are mostly to work out, sometimes to go boogie-boarding.

“When it comes to U-Dub,” Pedroza said of UH’s season-opening game, “we’re not going to be partying. We’re going to be working. I figure the earlier you prepare, the better it will be to get ready for battle. You can’t cram to get an ‘A’ on a test. You have to study. You have to prepare.”

Sorry Ne’Quan… that ball hit the turf. Nice try though.

Should have been a flag on the turf monkee for tripping.

“Upon further review, it is ruled that the receiver did not have control of the football prior to the ball hitting the turf. The ruling on the field is overturned and the line of scrimmage will be at the previous spot.”

Could it be argued that there was pass interference on cornerback Dee Turf?

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Nice pics, ST.
    Hope Higdon is OK.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  12. Haleakala March 25, 2014 8:43 am

Video replay does not show conclusive evidence to overturn the call. Now what was the call?

  13. Tanman March 25, 2014 8:44 am

Good to see the Rainbow Warriors are putting in extra time. I wish my students know what these guys ?know: you cannot get an A by studying last minute. BTW, where are the other team members?

  14. NorthShoreFan March 25, 2014 8:56 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Wildly swinging arms side to side and pounding the turf….incomplete, no catch, ball hit the turf…

admission,,,watched it twice…how many times you guys watched it before making the call?
das why I no like be one official..besides my less than perfect eye sight..my brain no work dat fast…

anyhoo, IMUA WARRIORS! work, work, work dividends pay out come due in the fall.

  15. Stephen Tsai March 25, 2014 8:57 am

“Mr. Honolulu” — Ne’Quan Phillips — insisted it was a catch.
    Everybody else ruled against him.

  16. jimmy the lock March 25, 2014 8:57 am

    Nice catch by the turf.

    happy Prince Kuhio day eve.

  17. izzy March 25, 2014 8:58 am

Frame: 00:00:03.25 clearly show ball on ground. Receivers hands are on top of the ball not under.

  18. Stephen Tsai March 25, 2014 9:08 am

On an unrelated related note, Ne’Quan Phillips actually throws a nice spiral. He said he played a little QB in high school.

  19. mauiwarrior March 25, 2014 9:19 am

ONLY six guys sticking around to work extra……………..SAD, more commitment from the other teammates are needed, but good job to the six who are working hard together as a team

  20. tommui March 25, 2014 9:21 am

    Who is doing the passing?

  21. A-House March 25, 2014 9:32 am

    hello, Izzy!

how’s da PNW holding out against all the “pineapple express”?

I no mo da equip to slow down da tape – me support Ne”Quan that it was a catch!

hope all the other Rainbow Warriors putting in their time during “spring break” like these 6 and Kirkwood back on the East coast.

  22. A-House March 25, 2014 9:34 am

me tinks Olivia will be a huge addition for the Wahine in the middle – more athletic and quicker than Jade

now, run the “middle” more to keep the opponents off-balance and give the outside/opposite hitters a break

  25. Stephen Tsai March 25, 2014 9:53 am

There were seven out there yesterday afternoon. Not sure who was there in the morning. Conditioning program ended last week Thursday. Spring ball starts Tuesday.

  26. jimmy the lock March 25, 2014 10:08 am

lol, I took “a little QB” literally.

Spring is in the air. The following weeks will show who wants it. Wishfully, after a successful season, some can look back at the hard work that was put in during winter sessions and spring break.

    GO WARRIORS!

  27. jimmy the lock March 25, 2014 10:10 am

Noticed the new Wahine transfer. Good to see Shoji reloading.

  28. boolakanaka March 25, 2014 10:15 am

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid March 25, 2014 10:17 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Definitely a catch, but as a “homer” I have to say that. You were there, you shot the vid, you posted it – what’s your final call Mr. Tsai?

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid March 25, 2014 10:21 am

Good for the the guys out there – do the hard work! Way to be!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    What should we call them?

    The Magnificent Seven
    Seven Samurai
    Seven Dwarfs
    Seven Deadly Sins
    Seven Wonders of the World
    Seven days of the week…
    Seven Chakras
    Seven colors of the Rainbow

  33. Stephen Tsai March 25, 2014 11:13 am

Using my iPhone 5s. The only trouble is I can’t adjust the light for outdoor shots. I had trouble at pro day.

  34. Haleakala March 25, 2014 11:50 am

Barry Higdon must have broken his finger shortly after ST took his photos. Hopefully he heals quickly.

In other news, for the first time the Cocks of South Carolina are playing the Beavers of Oregon State today in women’s NCAA tourney. Reminds me of when BYUH alsmost upset the OSU men in bball and the headline read (seriously I think it was the Star Bulletin): “Seariders almost lick Beavers.

  37. whitey March 25, 2014 1:06 pm

3 prong, your bags will be arriving sometime during the weekend. hope non of your omiyage is persishable. hahahahahaaa. wen an airline does not have enough planes, use excuses that routes are not making money, rip you off on baggage, and cannot fix their plane at their maintenance site (LAX), sometimes bad things happen. hopefully all that are stranded will be duely compensated and come home soon safely.

  38. jimmy the lock March 25, 2014 1:30 pm

Could be a close game, “Cocks trim Beavers”. Or a blowout, “Cocks explode on Beavers”. Or “Beavers unscathed as Cocks limp home”…nah, nuff already.

Speaking of Vegas, the Rebels football team might be in trouble with the upcoming APR reports that comes out in June. Poor grades could lead to multiple-season bowl ban

  52. nana March 25, 2014 8:02 pm

Every football team is working hard this spring. We should have 75 Warriors out there every morning and afternoon working their butts off to save Coach Chows job.

  53. 3-Prong March 25, 2014 8:12 pm

    Fruits and nuts are home…..

  56. whitey March 25, 2014 8:25 pm

to coach kenny n, his staff, and middies, deepest sympathies on the loss of one of your players.

  57. cocobean March 25, 2014 10:29 pm

Spring camp is starting next week when is Chow coming out of hibernation? I get the impression he’s been holed up somewhere since the last coach’s show avoiding cameras and microphones at all cost. Is there a gag order on his staff also?

As a fan I’d like to know what’s going with the program. Wish he’d come forward with some kind of “state of the team address,” then answer questions posed by the media. I want him to show that he’s a leader who understands the program is in dire straits and he and his management team is capable of moving it forward no matter the obstacle(s).

In my opinion, hiding behind a wall of silence is counter productive in that it adds more to the stagnation of the program. So what if his critics come out in force every time he appears in the media. Handling criticism is part of his job. I think it’s important he shows his staff and his players that he’s able to stand the heat in his kitchen.

  58. JustAsking March 25, 2014 11:19 pm

57-unfortunately, speaking to the media is not one of Coach Chow’s strengths. He struggles even when RK lobs him softballs on his show….. Has anyone been inspired by anything he has said on camera?

  59. JustAsking March 25, 2014 11:26 pm

Last on air appearance I remember seeing was to discuss this year’s recruits back in February. He was tired and it showed. Some coaches have on air charisma, some don’t.

  65. A-House March 26, 2014 7:01 am

sure hope HAL does not fail when I go on any trip to Vegas -they have a somewhat checkered history when it comes to plane delays – all the “cook-a-doodle do” is their on time service – are they going to leave out this long, long delay when it comes to calculating “on-time-service”? or, is mechanical failure a cause NOT to include

3/6/13 – on the way back from Vegas with MasaBoy – we had a 2+ hour delay in LA because of something – none of the flight staff could tell what was going on and the CAPT came on early saying the plane was fixed and all they were waiting for was paperwork clearance before pushing back – then silence for 1 hour and 25 minutes before we finally left

I miss Keonie Wagner – used to call him and complain all the time for their failures – once a gate employee stopped me and demanded that I put my average size hand carry into check in luggage, but he allowed others, including a HUGE guitar case and 10-12 others with suit cases nearly 2 or 3xs the size of my hand carry, to come on board – Keonie says that employee was only doing his job, but could not respond to why the others who had oversized baggage to bring them inside the plane

another airline with “funny” ways is Alaska Air – I hear of so many complaints from “local” people who feel they were definitely mistreated – good thing I used them only to go to/from fishing in Shelter Island.

  66. A-House March 26, 2014 7:02 am

I liked Coach Mac but most of his pronouncements were garbled.

Coach Chow – there is an old Chinese proverb: it is better to be silent and appear wise, than speak and prove otherwise!

Actually I think Coach Chow speaks well. There may not be that much football news going on and there is no use speaking out speculating.
