Sportscast forecast

With Oceanic set to officially take over the rights to UH sportscasts this week, here are some updates:

• Candace Fujishima, who was a director of KFVE sportscasts, was recently hired. There is one opening — for now — remaining: Coordinating producer. That position was posted last week. Steve Jackson, considered one of the best in the business in coordinating local sportscasts, should be considered a top candidate. He has done wonders at KFVE the past two decades.

• Because Oceanic does not own its own production truck — and there are no immediate plans to purchase one — the production crew for UH sportscasts will be on a contractual-hire basis. At least for the 2011-2012 academic year.

• There have been no firm decisions made on the commentators for UH sportscasts.

* * * * *

New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will not be able to make his annual visit with the UH coaches this year. But UH head coach Greg McMackin has brought in a couple of speakers, including former Nebraska assistant coach Marvin Sanders.

* * * * *

Remember Kawika Borden, a defensive back from Pearl City High?

He aced the walk-on tryout in February 2010, but then suffered a leg injury. While rehabbing, he was removed from the active roster. But Borden kept working out on his own, and he often watched practices.

Now he is healthy again. He will join the team the first day of the fall semester.

No surprise that former Warrior Joe Seumalo’s son, Isaac, picked Oregon State. Joe Seumalo coaches at OSU.

Another very good human interest article by Brudda Mike. Great stuff!

UH fans need to be patient. The sons of Rolo, Miano and Tuioti will eventually attract scouts’ attention.

Also, isn’t McMackin’s grandson, entering high school this year?

I hope Oceanic will hire both Kanoa and Jim Leahey for the first year of their broadcasts. I want Jim to go out with bang, working with Kanoa would be interesting listening.

    ahouse…the point is

    1) don’t believe everything you read.

    2) why would they pull a verbal offer because anything can happen when recruiting.

    3) it has happened all too often when a recruit changes their mind.

    4) it won’t be the first time

    5) ask gib arnold if he ever gives up on the possibility of a coveted player turning around and/or bouncing back in the future.

  35. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 1:27 am

I think it’s important for a player to go to a school that fits him the best — economically, socially and academically.

It’s never a good idea to choose a school because, say, the hometown school didn’t show enough love. Revenge should not be a factor in one of the biggest decisions of a person’s life.

Conversely, coaches usually are mature enough to take the emotion out of the recruiting battle. You give it your best shot, and hope it all works out. The main thing is it has to be a mutually happy agreement.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Is Bobby C better on radio than TV? Hate to say it but Jim L is losing it a bit. I think Kanoa is better and sharper. Oceanic will probably go with the lowest bidder…I wonder if the Hawaiian Telcom entry into TV will cause prices to change for the better. Oceanic has such a monopoly on cable.

  44. 3-Prong June 28, 2011 6:37 am

Got to keep the Leahy tradition alive. Jim’s still got the passion. Kanoa is the future.

nothing wrong with offering someone a scholarship.

worst thing that can happen and has happen is that they say “NO”.

Won’t be the first time, won’t be the last.

As we say in golf “never up, never in.”

  55. LizKauai June 28, 2011 8:57 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

As for the recruiting class, I have confidence in our coaches. They will look at all the kids with a fair eye for the tangible and intangible qualities and put together the best TEAM possible. The DESIRE has to come from the player tho.

Watching Secretariat – loved that great horse and now the movie. The HORSE had the talent and the courage to become successful. It was up to the people to recognize it, develop a language that communicated on all levels, and bring out the best in him.

I think our coaches do that with our student athletes. They are a great team among themselves and Hawaii is going to have a wonderful year!

    HiHo!

  56. papajoe2 June 28, 2011 9:57 am

Thanks DPK for the article. Nevada-Hawaii made the list as one of the best rivalries. Yes, I like to beat Reno, but I just don’t feel it like how we had a passion against BYU. Its getting there though. Maybe its because BYU beat us 10 straight years(?) before we finally beat them. But getting back to Nevada-Hawaii, I like how the article mentioned that Nevada was the WAC champion last year and the only team to beat Boise. Uumm…., wasn’t Hawaii a WAC champion too? Yyyeeeeeeeuuuppp, its getting there.

  57. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 10:12 am

So, there are 2 things still up in the air:

    Mack’s new contract and

    the Oceanic choice of commentators.

I am getting real antsy waiting for news.

  58. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 10:13 am

    ST, are you up, yet?

I got 5 hrs sleep, that’s good enough.

  59. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 10:38 am

    Gigi:

I woke up about a half hour ago, then watched the grandkid. Now I’m trying to figure out why I have a headache.

  60. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 10:41 am

    Re: Contracts.

With the state of financial peril, especially since UH won’t be getting another WAC check and it has to prepare for the MWC and Big West subsidies, I don’t anticipate much movement on contract negotiations for a while. It would be difficult to announce new contracts a week after asking everyone to take a pay cut.

  61. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 10:43 am

    haha, ST!

now you know what I go through babysitting my 16 mo old grandson every day.

thank goodness, teachers get the summer off.

my daughter and her hubby are teachers.

  62. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 10:43 am

One of the things brought to my attention is that the other workers in the UH athletic department have taken a 5 percent pay cut and relinquished targeted pay raises. What’s more, they have not received any pay raises for about four years, I believe.

  63. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 10:45 am

ST, yeah, I know what you mean.

still, it is unfair to Gib and Mack.

how would you like to be in their shoes?

lucky you got hired by the S-A post-haste.

  64. SteveM June 28, 2011 10:45 am

    I’m awake too. 🙂

ST — headache? Drink lots of water. Flush your system out after getting all that extra sleep. You must have had 7-8 hours.

  65. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 10:45 am

She’s a good kid, but like all kids, she’s very energetic. I’m an old man. It’s always interesting that I get more tired during vacation than anything else. By the way, if anyone wants to march in the Kailua Parade, let me know. Wena is seeking volunteers.

  66. Iwonderwhytheyhateme June 28, 2011 10:47 am

    #64

    ST,

Yea that’s what the bargaining unit agreed upon. Didnt know they didnt have a raise for that long though. Wow.

  67. SteveM June 28, 2011 10:50 am

I volunteered to be a driver in the parade.

I know the route from childhood.

    …but no offers yet. 🙄

  68. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 10:53 am

how many miles is the parade route?

these days, I don’t have much stamina.

did you know scientists now say it is very unhealthy to sit for long periods of time — even if you exercise at other times?

After reading that, I wondered about airplane pilots who sit for hours in their cockpit.

  69. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 10:56 am

It seems the root of UH’s problems is money.

    Or lack of.

The Regents’ mandate to Donovan was to treat the athletic department like a business.

I’m wondering what’s the university master plan for finances. It seems that enrollment, particularly at the community colleges, is at a record high. With increased tuition, that should be generating a lot of money, especially coupled with university-wide pay cuts.

    So what’s the problem?

Obviously, the school is not receiving enough funding from the Legislature. But, I think, many would argue that’s always been the case, even in the best of times. Are grants down? Are donations down?

It seems there needs to be a better plan than cutting salaries and raising tuition.

  70. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 10:58 am

    Gigi:

    The distance isn’t the problem.

    it’s the heat.

I don’t know about Farmer’s Almanacs or Severe Weather reports, but it seems the hottest spot of the year is the parade route on the Fourth of July.

And when it rains, it’s worse, because after the downpour, it creates a sauna effect with the heat.

After the parade is over, the tradewinds return and everything is hunky and dory again.

  71. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 11:00 am

    SteveM

    I’m sure you could drive.

Trouble is, you need a convertible.

And usually there’s a guy in the back, wearing a lei and flashing a shaka sign.

Kailua Parade = 60 percent politicians’ march.

ST, I wonder if Mayor Carlisle will be like Frank Fasi and lead the parade.

    hey, I actually miss Fasi.

when he stopped the heating of Manoa swimming pool, I wrote him a letter of complaint.

guess what, he wrote back to say he decided to change his mind because of my letter and restored the heating!!!

    what a guy!

  74. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 11:05 am

We used to have a managing editor who had a background in photography.

One of the photographers wasn’t comfortable shooting sporting events. The editor made this suggestion: Aim at the basketball rim, and let the action come to the picture. Worked out. The photographer got some great shots.

  75. jm2375 June 28, 2011 11:06 am

ST – I’m wondering if the BOR told any other UH entity (other than Auxiliary Services – bookstore, parking, etc) that it should be treated like a business.

  76. cheepono June 28, 2011 11:07 am

the legislature is mad at greenwood since the faculty pay cuts are not really pay cuts. once the 2 years are up, the faculty gets all their money back in retro pay.

wish hgea had union reps as good as uhpa.

  77. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 11:08 am

    Fasi got things done quickly.

Best story was when he was stuck in traffic because somebody took too long to make a left turn at an intersection.

Next day there’s a “no left turn” sign posted.

  78. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 11:11 am

  79. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 11:11 am

  80. warriorsun June 28, 2011 11:14 am

    #62.

new contracts does not neccessarily translate to new pay raises. across the nation, coaches are taking pay cuts but getting contract extensions. nevada’s chris ault is an example that has been mentioned several times on this blog. he got two years extension but took a 5% cut plus turned down bonuses he earned.

in arnold’s case, hawaii is at risk of losing a promising coach. sharks swim in warm hawaiian waters and if gib turns this program around he maybe gone in a blink. men’s basketball is revenue producing.

in mac’s case a rollover may be essential for recruiting purposes. creative negotiations are needed in his case to balance the sheet. you can cut, extend and insert a buyout to satisfy recruiting, budget and unilateral-termination.

cant they chew gum and walk at the same time in manoa?

  81. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 11:16 am

I wonder why there are about five onramps in the ewa-bound direction between UH and downtown, and only one in the diamond head direction between Piikoi and the Humane Society (and I’m not sure the University Avenue one counts because it can only be accessed coming from the Manoa side)?

  82. Ralph June 28, 2011 11:18 am

UH needs to recruit more out of state students to pay the higher tuition. Design a curriculum or booster a curriculum that would be attractive to the Chinese and other Asians. Why the Chinese, well, China is raking in a lot of moola and I’m sure the students there have the financial means of studying abroad. So why not Hawaii. A lot of mainland colleges are recruiting students from China.

A lot of Asians are filling the graduate schools in science, engineering and finance on the continent, UH should be aggressive and pursue more these doctoral candidates for our graduate schools. Tuition will be over $13K per semester for the 2011-2012 semesters for non residents.

  83. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 11:20 am

There’s a lot of financial and political clout behind Arnold.

Ferd suggested that Arnold’s family should be allowed to live in the president’s house in Manoa since it’s currently vacant.

  84. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 11:23 am

    #85 – excellent suggestion!

but, I can just imagine the fallout if that happens.

think how jealous other professors will be.

  85. warriorsun June 28, 2011 11:23 am

bc state engineers determined that westbound traffic was more in demand (5:1) than east bound traffic betw the two points you cited. rem this data was compiled during the statehood era before the build-up on the eastside.

    Great point.

UH probably needs to find a balance between raising money and producing graduates who will work in Hawaii. I suppose a university’s mission is to create a more educated society, but sometimes altruistic ambitions are lost when there are bills to be paid.

  88. Ralph June 28, 2011 11:27 am

As fans we ask why upper campus isn’t supporting athletics, well, because they are having a difficult time paying their own bills. Academics is the priority, somewhere down the list, way down the list, is UH athletics.

Maybe UH should have a lottery among employees. Winner gets to use the president’s house for a year.

    Nuff said.

  94. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 28, 2011 11:32 am

cutting salaries and raising tuition is not the best long term plan. but its the best and probably only short term plan (for the next few years). when i say best, i might mean only.

  95. Kevin June 28, 2011 11:34 am

HOW TO WALK AND CHEW GUM AT THE SAME TIME:

The gum must be purchased from a vendor that currently has state contracts to sell and distribute goods and services to union members as well.

When walking, the path designated must be approved and verified by the Board of Regents upon further review from the committee set in place to initially approve the flavor of the gum purchased from said vendor.

Should a path be occupied at that moment, a new path will be constructed provided that the necessary bids go out in time once the legislature allocates the funds.

  96. warriorsun June 28, 2011 11:34 am

the uh athletic program is a $30 m endeavor. i hardly call that low on the totum pole. additionally it impacts a major state facility and retains the highest paid employee.

i believe that draws respectable attention.

Times are tough. Maybe they should convert/remodel the UH president’s house into student housing? Last I heard there’s still a housing shortage for UH students on-campus. Another idea would be to put the property up for sale. Too many state owned properties just sitting vacant and costing tax payers $$ to maintain – Washington Place is another example.

  98. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 11:36 am

I would go the other way. I would ask Punahou to give Arnold three free tuitions. That equates to a $60,000 pay increase.

Of course, that would mean scheduling UH games around the Punahou Carnival.

  99. warriorsun June 28, 2011 11:36 am

    kevin,

    thanx for the “cant”.

when u become motivated, work on the “can”.

  100. Kevin June 28, 2011 11:37 am

    Old School Dave,

You could fit MANY beer pong tables in there.

  101. Kevin June 28, 2011 11:40 am

Thanks for proving you continue to have NO sense of humor.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Don’t tell me **** about “can’t”.

  104. TJ June 28, 2011 11:57 am

    No Forcier update yet?

  105. A-House June 28, 2011 12:03 pm

    al:

#34 – point is that Mathis has NO intention of committing to UH – it was UH that made the offer! He said at least Wazzu’s offer is from a BCS school – no mention of UH on his list!

yes, it’s good to make “extra” offers hoping that some will not accept thereby opening a way for another, BUT got only 25 scholarships to give each year.

When should UH pull the offer to Mathis? Afterall, Coach Mack made 3 QBs an offer and the first to accept gets it – Kevin Spain.

  106. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 12:29 pm

    A-House:

It’s all about the perfect fit.

BCS schools might get more money, but that doesn’t translate into more money for the athlete.

The size of the weight rooms don’t matter as much as the work done there.

Indiana is a BCS school. But good luck on ever winning a Big Ten football title.

If a player wants the experience of going away, then he should go away.

In the end, it’s where you want to spend the next four or five years. Do it for love, not for the money, because nobody (except Ohio State players) is going to get rich playing college football.

  107. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 12:34 pm

And just remember: Wherever a player goes, after the letters are signed and delivered, and the Clearinghouse stamps “approved” on the application, the marriage starts.

And the conditioning and position coaches will yell at you.

  108. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 12:42 pm

‘Puter is acting up. I keep getting the alligator.

  109. d1shima June 28, 2011 1:00 pm

I try to convince Mrs. d1shima of the benefits of digital photography (ala spray and pray) but she still strives for perfection of composition when taking people photos.

People have been known to wander off (mentally and physically) while she is staring into the viewfinder with finger poised on the shutter release.

(is it still a “shutter release” when there is no actual shutter involved anymore? LK?)

  110. jm2375 June 28, 2011 1:03 pm

d1 – as my hubby says, “It’s Free”, when Screecher is complaining that he’s taking too many pictures

  111. d1shima June 28, 2011 1:03 pm

    DPK,

Not sure what those writers were alluding to but that UM-Illinois ending was enough to convince me that Forcier could live up to the hype. (speaking of Tate, not necessarily either of his bros)

  112. Couch potato June 28, 2011 1:04 pm

many local athletes had or have no intention of committing to UH but if you keep the offer dangling you never know who may take the bait. take away the offer and you have no bait and no chance in hell of ever getting the local commitment.

show prospective Warriors your commitment by giving them an offer. at least you are included in their options. also, that is one article that your opinion is based upon, unless you read others. he may have mentioned UH in other articles or to friends or family that we don’t know about.

dangle, dangle, dangle. let’s go fishing.

  113. Curt June 28, 2011 1:19 pm

    A-House,

#34 & 107 I know what you mean. If a bachelorette talks about her interest in Bachelor A, B, and C and not me, I would feel really dejected and want to pull my “offer” and look elsewhere. Fortunately in football recruiting, it’s not about luv. It’s about identifying and recruiting the best players possible…even if they initially were looking elsewhere. It’s about keeping the doors open, developing the relationship, and pretending you’re da greatest ting since sliced bread. That’s how I recruited and landed my wife. 😉

  114. Couch potato June 28, 2011 1:28 pm

Curt. that’s because you are not a bachelor so why should she show interest in you unless you come with plenty $$$’s or extraordinary package.

  115. Curt June 28, 2011 1:39 pm

    🙂

  116. d1shima June 28, 2011 1:45 pm

    EXTRA-ordinary? 😯

  117. Ralph June 28, 2011 1:46 pm

$30 million is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of running upper campus. Academics vs athletics, money wise, the upper campus wins hands down, so, the UHAD is placed lower on the totem pole.

Upper campus would spend money on maintaining its upper campus facilities before they divert monies to build locker rooms, etc in the quarry. With autonomy, any monies received by UH will first benefit upper campus, and the AD would be left out because the legislature did not fully fund all of UH requests.

  118. Couch potato June 28, 2011 1:50 pm

if the bucket holds a thousand drops then we talking $30 billion. did i do my math correct?

  119. Couch potato June 28, 2011 1:51 pm

how many drops are you talking about Ralph?

  120. Ralph June 28, 2011 1:51 pm

Kolten selected to the Baseball coaches all american team. A good endorsement for UH that a local boy staying home can get as much recognition playing for the home team as someone going to the mainland to further their chances of playing professionally.

  121. Ralph June 28, 2011 1:54 pm

lots of drops, but my math isn’t as good as yours so I can’t compute the exact figures. Someone like Wassup Doc can chime in and give both of us the approximate figures that UH spends on upper campus compared to the $30 million spent by the UHAD.

  122. Couch potato June 28, 2011 2:03 pm

ahhh, so you cannot say it is a drop in the bucket since you have no idea what is the total number of drops. 🙄

drip, drip, drip, tighten you packing nut.

  123. Curt June 28, 2011 2:04 pm

    A-House

So the suggestion I hear is that Coach Mack should continue to “dangle, dangle, dangle.” The UH athletic dept is short of $$$ but, they do have extraordinary packages (offensive and defensive).

  124. SteveM June 28, 2011 2:06 pm

    Stephen Tsai:

Trouble is, you need a convertible.

And usually there’s a guy in the back, wearing a lei and flashing a shaka sign.

Kailua Parade = 60 percent politicians’ march.

    Oh. I withdraw then.

I never learned how to drive convertibles. 😳

  125. Couch potato June 28, 2011 2:09 pm

here is an excerpt from David McClain’s 2008 testimony presented to the Senate Committee on Ways and Means:

I want to thank the Legislature for your support of our Biennium Budget request. Our

request for operating funds totaled $39 million in fiscal year 2007-2008 (FY08) and $58

million in fiscal year 2008-2009 (FY09). The Legislature approved $26 million and $37

million, respectively. Our request for general obligation bond-funded capital

improvement projects totaled $268 million in PY08 and $274 million in FY09, a total of

$542 million. The Legislature approved $183 million in FY08 and $2 million in FY09,

for a total of $185 million in GO bond-funded CIP funds for the Biennium.

Kolten Wong grounds out, second baseman Jean Almanzar to pitcher Brian Diemer.

  127. whitey June 28, 2011 2:22 pm

funny thing about money. got an update from a school of similar size to uh and said that they are ending their 10 yr $800 million campaign. this is for student scholarships, faculty upgrades, and facility upgrades. right now, they have $880 million and will probably close it at $900 million. back in the 60’s they only had 10,000 students. somehow uh never pays attention to how important alumni and friends are to them.

  128. Ralph June 28, 2011 2:23 pm

Operating funds + capital improvement is a lot of money, but still short of what the upper campus needs to fund all of the classes, maintain the infrastructure, and build new facilities. A lot of classes were dropped and lecturers weren’t rehired to cut cost this past academic year.

Add tuition to the operating funds, and grants, endowments, and foundation contribution and we see the stakes rising.

Wassup Doc! set the record straight.

  129. whitey June 28, 2011 2:26 pm

the school is a state school, use to play second fiddle to another state school, but has a tremendous alumni association office and staff. they get money from their state legislature, but the schools are not subjected to hoops and hurdles like the hawaii legislature.

  130. Couch potato June 28, 2011 2:31 pm

why don’t you just say it is the University of Pittsburgh.

  131. Couch potato June 28, 2011 2:33 pm

  132. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 2:34 pm

Well, I am a UH alumna and so is hubby.

We were invitied to a class reunion, which lasted all day and consisted of 3 meals and a tour of the campus, including lower campus.

    We were so impressed!

Although we have never been contacted for money, we do receive magazines from UH that show photos of graduates and events on campus.

That’s how UH hooks you and reels you in.

We gladly donate to UH Foundation on an annual basis now.

  133. Couch potato June 28, 2011 2:36 pm

Does the Blog Host need an assist from Swamp People?

  147. LK June 28, 2011 3:24 pm

    d1,

There are still shutters and shutter releases. Don’t know exactly how phone’s cameras work, but all other cameras have the shutter between the lens and the image sensor just like in the film days (ie. shutter beween the lens and film). With single lens reflex’s there is a mirror too.

I agree with your assesment that one of the true benefits of digital (photography is the low cost of (over)shooting. When we shot with film, there was always a need to get it right, on the negative, and, if in doubt we always took another, knowing that it increased our cost. With digital, it’s more about how much time we spend, as the film cost factor is removed from the equation.

Encourage you wife to shoot more (hence, accuracy thru volume.) She can always edit later, a new time cost. Just remind her that she can’t go back to the point in time that the photo was taken.

  148. d1shima June 28, 2011 3:26 pm

Congratulations to Kolten Wong and Lenny Linsky – ABCA All-Americans. 🙂

  152. Ralph June 28, 2011 3:37 pm

UHAD wants more revenue, start selling season tickets earlier, and keep selling them.

K State is already selling renewals for football, men and women basketball and volleyball. Why wait? The men averaged 12,500+ fans the last 4 seasons in basketball, the women 4K+, and even with the sell outs in men’s basketball they are not complacent, they are offering early renewals with gifts and asking for deposits for those who want to be placed on a wait list.

In football, they offer 4 games for the military at $10 or $20 depending on the opponent and one of the game is designated Fort Riley Day, they have a discounted family night, alumni night during homecoming, and most games they offer a 4 tickets package at a good discount.

Open the UH athletic website, there is nothing to generate ticket sales. Those will season tickets got their renewal notices, that’s it.

  154. Da Punchbowl Kid June 28, 2011 3:39 pm

    d1shima – #113 –

The piece about Forcier included many other top college football players which the writer(s) considered over rated. According to them, many good players are over rated. They were kind of down on everybody. I guess there’s no pleasing some folks.

I don’t think Forcier is over rated, which is why I posed the last line in my original post as a question.

The biggest question is, will we even see Forcier here? He’s got the goods.

  155. d1shima June 28, 2011 3:40 pm

  156. d1shima June 28, 2011 3:42 pm

So the Florida baseball players are preoccupied at the moment with cocks?

    Sounds about right… 😎

  165. koakane June 28, 2011 3:57 pm

Stephen Tsai:June 28th, 2011#108. If a player wants the experience of going away, then he should go away. In the end, it’s where you want to spend the next four or five years. Do it for love, not for the money, because nobody (except Ohio State players) is going to get rich playing college football.

have to partially disagree with you on the last point. with the economic times as it is, financial help to get an education is hard to not consider.

  166. whitey June 28, 2011 3:57 pm

thinking about what col a house said about “offering” scholies. what uh is doing is not even close to what others are doing. look at usc, they are under ncaa restrictions, but they have offered over 30 scholies for the 2012 season. they will be allowed to only recruit 15. over recruiting is not a problem because the coaches will call a recruit to keep him updated about the number of scholies they have left and give them options.

  167. Kevin June 28, 2011 3:57 pm

You open doors, then close them, quicker than the hands of most, can’t you see there is hope here? It’s time for reaction. You realize what’s wrong, wrong with your life, quicker than the eyes of most, can’t you see there is hope here? TIME FOR REACTION.

  171. whitey June 28, 2011 4:03 pm

i think what ST said about love has it’s merits and what koakane says has equal value, but in today’s world, we have a lot of prima donnas who love to be in the limelight and are very materialistic. sad, but true.

  172. whitey June 28, 2011 4:06 pm

koakane, i promise i goin come for tg this year. just had too non essential things to do last year.

looking forward to seeing ya, duffer coming too?

  176. d1shima June 28, 2011 4:18 pm

Going into my 9th year of supporting two non-scholarship CFB players I gotta say there’s much validity to what Stephen said. Glad #1 and #2 got to have all the experiences they did.

Maybe sometime after this upcoming school year Mrs. d1shima and I might total up all the tuition, room and board, travel and other costs involved but to see the friends they have made, the growth we’ve seen in them, and the experiences they’ve had, the final tally will certainly be in the “priceless” category.

  177. koakane June 28, 2011 4:20 pm

whitey my pov is based on the non prima donnas those who prove their worth, loyalty, love for family, community and the sport.

whitey is the q school qualifying rounds held on Oahu?

  183. whitey June 28, 2011 4:28 pm

d1, and the mrs are doing it the old fashioned way, which I admire and love. my parents paid for my “education” and i tried to help by working for my board and participating for the college swim team. Also tried to “study”, but to my surprise I graduated in 4 years. yes, what you are doing for your keeds is truly priceless.

  184. whitey June 28, 2011 4:31 pm

koakane, they have the usga qualifying on the 4 major islands. this is an amateur only tournament with the winner getting invited to play in the Masters at Augusta. This is one tough tournament for boys/men.

  185. whitey June 28, 2011 4:39 pm

it is good to see that da warriors are doing more visible recruiting than in the past. i think it reflects on the coaching staff and team of how well they are doing and progressing each year. Go Warriors!!!!!

UH Rainbow Wahine Emma Friesen WAC Honor as top female athlete

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2011/6/28/WSWIM_0628114635.aspx

DENVER – University of Hawai’i diver Emma Friesen has been named the women’s recipient of the 2010-11 Western Athletic Conference Joe Kearney Award. Friesen wins her second Kearney award and the eighth overall for Hawai’i. Named in honor of former WAC commissioner Joe Kearney, the awards are given annually to the top male and female student-athletes in the WAC.

Emma Friesen previously received the Joe Kearney award after the 2007-08 season. In her four years diving for UH, Friesen qualified for the NCAA National Championships every year she competed. She is a three-time all-American and the first four-time WAC champion on the 1-meter board. In addition to her successes in the pool, Friesen also managed to earn a 3.38 GPA during the four seasons she competed.

Friesen is a two-time WAC Diver of the Year and was twice named to the WAC all-academic team. In 2011, she finished seventh nationally on the 1-meter. To finish out her career at UH, Friesen won the Jack Bonham Award (female division), an award given to a UH student-athlete for outstanding performances on and off the field.

“[Friesen] had an excellent career at UH, always responding to injury and adversity with great performances,” said UH diving coach Mike Brown. “Emma is a remarkable athlete who could turn it on at any time and was the name and face of Rainbow diving during her time here. She represented our program as well as any of our athletes, and it was a pleasure to coach her during her time at the University of Hawai’i.”

Friesen has also proven herself on the international stage. A native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, she finished fifth overall in the 3-meter board at the 2008 Canadian Olympic trials. The following year, she placed sixth in the 1-meter board at the 2009 World University games in Belgrade, Serbia.

    UH’s Joe Kearney Award Recipients:

    2010-11 Emma Friesen, Diving

    2009-10 Amber Kaufman, Volleyball/Track & Field

    2007-08 Emma Friesen, Diving

    2006-07 Colt Brennan, Football

    Kanoe Kamana’o, Volleyball

    2005-06 Kanoe Kamana’o, Volleyball

    2003-04 Kim Willoughby, Volleyball

    2002-03 Kim Willoughby, Volleyball/Basketball

    I’m alive. I think.

I’m not very compliant when it comes to taking my meds.

So when I try, I think I get an adverse reaction.

  212. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 6:10 pm

Show of hands to anyone who has seen Emma Friessen compete?

  213. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 6:13 pm

I’ve only met one of d1’s sons, but my niece knows the other, but I’d say they’ve really benefitted from the experience of being on the Mainland.

Wherever you go, make the most of it.

    Life is short.

Then you get a bunch of meds you forget to take.

  214. wafan June 28, 2011 6:27 pm

If I had a choice I would have remained in Hawai’i. But, under the circumstances then and now . . .

  215. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 6:27 pm

ST, you must not miss a dose!

That’s what my doctor told me before discharging me from the hospital, where I had spent 3 nights in April.

  216. hilobilly June 28, 2011 6:30 pm

Someone’s probably already sent this link, but I’ll do it again anyway…..while looking at the KS 2011 Summer ‘I Mua’ issue, I found a real nice article on Bulla & his prison ministry. A great read! I also guess I don’t have a perfect head by his decree, since I have a very full head of hair, aue!

  217. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 6:30 pm

Are you aware that I blogged while in the hospital?

People still mention it, cause they can’t believe it.

But, try lying in bed night and day.

you will go out of your mind with boredom.

    so that’s why I blogged.

  218. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 6:32 pm

    wafan:

    Seems it all worked out.

  219. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 6:34 pm

ST, you should’ve called the ambulance.

I have HMSA-HMO so had to pay $150 for 1 ambulance taking me from home to Pali Momi,

and $150 for ambulance from Pali Momi to Straub.

Not bad, considering the total bill exceeded $1,000.

  220. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 6:38 pm

    Interesting about the Dodgers’ situation.

Could something similar happen in college football?

Would there ever be a scenario where, say, the WAC had to help a school pay its debts?

  221. OZ June 28, 2011 6:39 pm

  223. wafan June 28, 2011 6:41 pm

    Mr. Tsai . . .

Have to agree. On the other hand, we would all drive ourselves insane playing the what if game.

    For all of UH

  226. chopsueyboy June 28, 2011 6:52 pm

azngamer808 went to UW in 2004, graduated in 2008

and has no intentions of living in Hawaii again.

eventually want to move from Seattle to Anaheim to be closer to his Ducks.

I’ll never know how local boy got addicted to hockey. Is Disney to blame???

my best 3 high school buddies from Hawaii Baptist Class of 1971 went to the mainland

and stayed. I became #3 son to all their parents who remained in Honolulu.

  227. Stephen Tsai June 28, 2011 6:55 pm

I remember when my friends went away to college. That was back when you could see off people at the gate. It also was the year that Honolulu City Lights was released. So we’d all go there, with our lei, and everybody would be crying and then …

A few years later, everyone is back in Hawaii, and we’re all like: What the heck did we get so sad about?

  228. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 6:59 pm

It took me 7 years to circle the world and return to Hawaii.

  229. chopsueyboy June 28, 2011 7:03 pm

back in the days when traveling off island was so special,

everybody came to see you off

had to wear coat, tie, and dress shoes…

now days, someone drops you off and

we see shorts, t-shirt, & slippa

  230. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 7:09 pm

    CS boy,

    that’s true.

when I left in 1968, I dressed up.

Pitt is a state school, step sister to Penn State. inferior to Carnegie-Melon and Duquesne in town but still Blue Collar Pitt Panthers

The market for UH is convincing the not quite University of California top 25 % types to consider UH versus Oregon and Arizona

As ST says, it is tough to balance needs of Hawaii’s educated populace and revenue producing UH students who will live elsewhere

PS: At 72, there is no better feeling than bodysurfing all day with my children and 5 grandchildren celebrating in great surf.(Well they surfed all day and I did a little) 0 meds

  232. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 7:15 pm

Last Sunday, I met a couple who said they have a grandmother who is 91 and STILL DRIVING!!!

Hope I’m that healthy at that age.

    No senility, please.

  233. jm2375 June 28, 2011 7:26 pm

    ST – take your meds!!

My mother is 82 and just returned from a 2-week trip to Paris & London and next month will be going on cruise through French Polynesia.

When the UH autonomy bill was passed in the ’90s, there was a minimum level of state support built in. UH has *never* gotten that amount.

    Is any UH entity self-supporting?

  234. wafan June 28, 2011 7:27 pm

    GG . . .

If you are senile you would not know it. Hopefully, you would be happy everyday, too.

  235. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 7:30 pm

    wafan,

a woman who sat next to me at the opera told me she has dementia.

still drives, but sometimes cannot remember the street she lives on.

I wonder why her husband has not taken the car keys from her!

  236. wafan June 28, 2011 7:36 pm

    GG . . .

There are varying degrees of dementia. And, the loss of independence is tough to swallow! Surely she understands there will be a day when her independence will be taken from her.

  237. gigi-hawaii June 28, 2011 7:43 pm

    wafan,

    that’s what is so sad.

she knows she has the beginning stages of dementia.

it is terrible to know that it is progressive.

Afterall, Coach Mack made 3 QBs an offer and the first to accept gets it – Kevin Spain.

ah, my friend perhaps you misunderstand my point.

once again, a coach offers a highly coveted prospect, quite often knowing that this guy will not come to hawaii. but, he could be the holy grail so offer anyway.

now along comes a hometown publication like scout.com who are entrenched in the northwest and interviews this young man after tripping wsu. will there be a local bias to the story????

often a kid is pressured into saying something to the press. especially when he is still on campus. so he tells em, “yah, wsu is in my top three along with xyzu and qrstu.” he’ll tell em this much to get the guy off his back.

    then it becomes public.

now even if this were true that he likes wsu, who’s to say that somewhere down the road he either falls out of love with wsu or wsu gets another player whom they think is better and drops the prospect.

i’ve spoken to many prospects and they will tell you a similar story.

a good example is jeremy perry. he committed to hawaii and actually had signed the loi, but, at the last minute, literally he had a sudden change of heart and went to osu. if that coach pulled his early offer he never would have got him.

do you blame a 17-18 year old kid for being so indecisive? do you blast him because he wanted a different prom date?

these are huge decisions for a youngster to make, one that will affect him for 4-5 years.

and that coach should never pull his offer when a kid makes a soft verbal, and in this case it is not even that much. he hasn’t tripped hawaii yet and he hasn’t said no either.

how many recruits that we have landed have said, ‘as soon as i got off the jet i knew it was hawaii”

don’t condemn the young man because he voiced his current opinion.

    okay…

    …nuff said

    Dear Coward in #256,

Hate to tell you this, but FACT that I am one of the most normal people of all the personalities on this blog, regulars or the occasional transforming trolls. “Troll”, you remember that word right???

You never liked my sense of humor and I don’t care.

You never liked my fanatic writings and I could give two *****.

The only thing I give a rip about are the people I interact with in REAL LIFE.

I’ll never forget the day you went insane on this blog when you decided that your “holier than thou” online persona declared all of those that opined that we’d rather hear from a UH student-athlete than a Notre Dame student-athlete that was from Hawaii.

Oh lord you went on and on with empty arguement after empty argument.

Face it, your inner insanity is DYING for the normalcy that I am and that most here are.

You wish you had my courage to say what you want and you wish you had the confidence within yourself to know who you truly are as a person in REAL LIFE away from the keyboard.

You don’t know me and in that, I laugh cause you’re not WORTHY.

    Dude, I’m AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just be ME and you’ll feel better.

Besides, REAL MEN handle “beefs” in person.

Cowards do it online with a keyboard to protect them.

I will indulge cowards like Lord and Master of all that is “decent” in post #256 IN PERSON if they have any manhood.
