Trapasso gets 1-year extension

There’s an old saying: If you can’t do 55, don’t get busted going 56.
If Mike Trapasso is your man, then he deserves more than the one-year extension he received today.
Maybe he doesn’t get the five-year extensions that went to Bob Coolen and Dave Shoji, but — if he’s your man — he deserves at least two or three more years.
A one-year deal doesn’t help recruiting or provide stability. His tenure wasn’t extended, it was prolonged.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

  11. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 7:02 am

    Stephen,

Having a health plan is great as long as your HMO has one, too. Half the time I’m not sure the doctor one gets assigned to in an HMO really can keep track of what’s happening to each patient much less know where to direct you in your time of need.

I feel really sorry for those who have lost their job and ergo their health insurance. I shudder to think what it costs to maintain that till the next job.

  12. FloridaTed May 26, 2009 7:05 am

    Morning, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister,

Just watched Rocky’s tape, he is quite an engaging young man. Articulate and funny. I like his outlook on the team this year, we might be in for a real treat.

Spencer Smith should be able to round out more of the picture. I can’t help but start to get the excitement going in my gut.

  13. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 7:10 am

Under a full scholarship do any of the athletes get medical? Or do they all have to carry their own at their own expense?

  14. lakesidegt May 26, 2009 7:15 am

Re medical coverage – I would think that athletes would be like any other UH students – covered under their parents’ medical plans (if any) until 24 or so. At least that’s what HMSA has for my sons attending UH.

  15. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 7:24 am

    lakesidegt…

Just curious about that since contact sports like football pose a higher risk for injury that may require surgery. Furthermore, how does that work when one’s child is out-of-state with the parent’s policy? Would that be pay first get reimbursed later?

  16. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 7:28 am

About 7 years back.. there was a student insurance program from about $1000-a-year but I believe it was limited to a maximum of $5000 in benefits.

  17. FloridaTed May 26, 2009 7:35 am

    madeinhawaii,

Talking about healthplans, I definately had some divine influence with my stroke. First I was taken to the best Hospital and they treated me full on, without a heathplan, then they put me on complete financial aide, including rehab. My circumstances where so fortunate, all the way around, I don’t know how else to explain it. Not to mention going from vegetable to walking the hallways within a week.

To this day I’m still trying to sort through all my experiences.

  18. Colomaohana May 26, 2009 7:39 am

    Morning gang!

  19. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 7:41 am

    Florida Ted,

That divine intervention probably started years ago cause I bet the Misses had a lot to do with that. Sorting through it all, working with the agencies. Never losing hope, standing by you and never letting you give up, too.

I’m just happy to see you blogging again. Place wouldn’t be the same without you.

  22. jm2375 May 26, 2009 7:58 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

    As lizk says, Happy Tuesday-is-Monday.

I must say, I’m very thankful we have health insurance, especially every time I’m at the pharmacy, paying $20 for a drug that probably costs $100.

We may have a new addition to our family either today, but preferably, tomorrow – a puppy!

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid May 26, 2009 8:03 am

  26. Justin May 26, 2009 8:05 am

    Spencer,

Besides for Mouton, our secondary seemed to be the weak link last year.
How will the defensive backs of this year avoid giving up the big play?

  27. jm2375 May 26, 2009 8:09 am

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid May 26, 2009 8:20 am

    Spencer,

Do the players schedule their own times for the off season conditioning program? Are they given programs by the strength and conditioning coaches? Is there any form of accountability?

  30. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 8:44 am

  31. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 8:49 am

ST, do u know how may of the 105 campers will be participating in the 8-week summer cycle training period in Hawaii?

  32. Dirty Commish May 26, 2009 8:55 am

    Initial Bacon Salt report:

Pretty good on poke. Not so much on spaghetti. Commish will report as he tries it on more food items.

  33. (Jesse)James May 26, 2009 8:59 am

Good morning gang…Florida Ted..great to see you back…Hope all is well.

I hope the players really show some initiative this year and all of them get out there and participate in off-season conditioning. I remeber Freshman year playing ball and the coach told us when we signed up to play the summer before our Freshman year that we should work out and run over the summer so that we wouldn’t be dragging butt in August. Unfortunately, a majority of us blew it off as something we could do later…well, August came sooner than we anticipated…and we were puking our guts out for the first week of fall camp with all the drills and running….needless to say, that never happened again….LOL

  34. (Jesse)James May 26, 2009 9:01 am

Dirty Commish….I think the Dirty Commish should try the salt on some chili cheese fries the Dirty Commish either makes or buys….

  35. Dirty Commish May 26, 2009 9:07 am

Mmmmmmmmmmmm chili cheese fries. Noted. Appreciate the suggestion.

  36. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 9:08 am

    Bacon salt, eh?

I don’t suppose that comes in low sodium…

maybe it’s ground, dried turkey bacon…

  37. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 9:12 am

If you’re going in the direction of chili cheese fries.. you may as well wrap a medium washed potato in wet paper towels and plastic wrap. Microwave it for 5 mins, split.. add sourcream, horseraddish…chives and a dash of that salt… some cheese if you like…a side of steak…

  38. Dirty Commish May 26, 2009 9:21 am

According the their website (www.baconsalt.com) Bacon Salt is a “zero calorie, zero fat, vegetarian and kosher seasoning that makes everything taste like bacon.”

They also have Baconnaise but the Commish hardly eats stuff with Mayo and didn’t want to commit to a whole jar. Although they do have a Baconnaise Mac Salad recipe. Hmmmmmmm. Worth a shot?

Baked potato is also a good idea. Will add that to the list. Going to make a pork butt slow cook rub this weekend for some pulled pork action. We shall see how that goes.

Too bad for the BaseBows… was listening as the wheels just fell off the bus. Painful. Begrudging hats off the Fresno State. They’re the champs and played like it.

  39. BG May 26, 2009 9:23 am

Good morning ALL! Even with two cups of kope I’m still dragging a big trailer behind me! LOL

Florida Ted…It’s super wonderful to see you go from lurker to blogger again!!! We really really really missed you…

  40. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 9:33 am

    Dirty Commish:

For veggies, I suppose you could try some Shanghai Pak Choi sauteed with a touch of soy… seasoned with your bacon salt.

Do a nice whipped egg-white low-heat omelette with cream cheeze, cheddar and spinach topped with your salt. … almost quiche

What should the fans expect from the defensive secondary for 2009?

  43. Kazz May 26, 2009 10:01 am

    Spencer,

There were many long balls given up last season in various games. What do you think will be adjusted this season to combat/prevent these types of plays being used against us this year?

  44. Kazz May 26, 2009 10:04 am

    BG,

    Three words: “five-hour energy”.

Just under 4.00 per 2oz bottle, but worth it. Works for me.

will our coverage schemes be modified this year?

  67. Kekoa May 26, 2009 11:49 am

Greetings Princess! Hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

Question for Spencer: Of the great Safeties that have played the position for UH, what part in the grand scheme of themes do you aspire to leave your mark. Interceptions? Making a jarring hit after the catch to jar the ball loose? Rushing in to make a QB sack on a Safety blitz?…or…do you aspire to do all 3 and set the mark even higher?

    GO WARRIORS!

  68. LiL_Mermaid May 26, 2009 11:49 am

    Non football-related questions..

Stretch – gotta agree with you on the shirt. The color is…..electric green….
BTW, horrible results on Friday. Everyone blamed their game on the Kona winds. What an excuse! They could have at least said it was the drink tents. Maybe scores would be better when the clubhouse is built.

  84. Stretch May 26, 2009 12:57 pm

jojo – how can people blame the Kona wind when they probably never played the course so don’t know how the course plays with regular wind?? Must have been the drink tents or was it the cart girl passing out beers again that was distracting everyone??

ST ~ Add lime green to your ‘Do Not Buy List’

Good Show today! Technicals were as smooth as a new born baby’s okole! No chopped up audio/video. No blank space.

However here are some tips from da Liz Chun School of Broadcasting. Stop drumming your fingers on the table ST, it sounds like Tundah on the mic! Remembah it picks up and amplifies everything! So wen the 2 of you laff, my neighbors think I’m losing it!

  88. Ralph May 26, 2009 1:06 pm

Trap needs to recruit at least one flame thrower…most of the pitchers returning are in the mid 83-86 range..not having the velocity these pitchers need to learn to pitch- location and change of speed to be successful…the last few weeks they got rocked hard with their fast ball being in the mid eighties at best and the pitch in the batters power wheel.

  89. Ralph May 26, 2009 1:09 pm

your production crew needs to let the both of you know that you are on camera and live once again…don’t newscaster see a red light to know which camera is on them and when it is on them live….

  90. jojo ® May 26, 2009 1:10 pm

Stretch – no, I don’t think it was the beer girl, she got relieved of her duties and resorted to riding around with the pro instead. Nice to know, an 85 year old grandma made the first hole in one a couple of months ago.

  106. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 3:17 pm

agree with ST on the need to give Coach Mike more than a one year extension, but Im just glad we avoided another fruitless selection committee fiasco.
These are great times to recruit locally in tandem with the mainland.
Personally, I would like to see a change in batting instruction and a full committment to bigball. In college baseball, pitchers throw a lively baseball and batters use super-flexed alloyed bats that give hitters an advantage over pitchers.
To exploit that advantage we need to place priority on big bats. That is the nature of college baseball, unless 100 mph pitchers become commonplace.

  107. protector May 26, 2009 3:17 pm

If Trap’s team hadn’t collapsed during the WAC season, would he have gotten a decent extension?? A one year extension seems like a non-confidence type of vote for a coach if you ask me. Let’s hope it comes together next season. I’m kind of tired of those that are calling for a new baseball coach where we’d have to start from scratch again. Please stop it!

  108. YpoWarrior May 26, 2009 3:22 pm

ST, FYI….that was from last years Spelling Bee.

  109. (Jesse)James May 26, 2009 3:28 pm

Hey Mrs. C….go back to the pink side and read my post right after Stretch’s one in the EC thread….LMAO

  110. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 3:32 pm

off season training is key to a great jump in camp and fall….esp our OLM.
Pay attention to who stays home and how much running, plyometrics and agilities are being done by our hogs.
To be sure, there is more on the menu but it would be great to see more gassers-on-field in the eight-week training cycle.

  111. al May 26, 2009 3:32 pm

    jm0000

goldies are playful and can have minds of their own. year round shedders. males are very kolohe if not neutered. but, they love their families all the same.

    on the other hand labradors………..

  112. jm2375 May 26, 2009 3:35 pm

Our previous dog was a Golden. Yes they are shedders. No poodles! Yuk.

A-house – I just enjoy the movie and try not to critique it. I’m a fan, not a fanatic (Trekkie). It was good and fulfilled my expectations. I thought the guy playing Bones was trying a bit too hard to be like the original actor, especially since he was in Lord of the Rings. I think I caught most, if not all, of the references, including the one about the Enterprise series. My daughter liked Museum, but then, what a 13 year old likes vs what an adult likes can be 2 vastly different things.

  113. vballfan1 May 26, 2009 3:35 pm

I feel like giving Trap a one year extension will hurt recruiting , and will put us in a bigger hole eventually.

Sometimes starting out from scratch can be a good thing.

  114. al May 26, 2009 3:36 pm

    nn,

how many volunteer coaches are allowed per team?
i don’t expect trap to release any current coaches and i don’t see any of those two leaving on their own accord.

    it will be interesting though.

  115. Ralph May 26, 2009 3:46 pm

I’d rather start from scratch then continue mediocrity! 53% career winning percentage won’t get us in the NCAA and won’t bring fans out consistently year in and year out..we probably had the best turn out this season in Trap’s 8 years at the helm…would have been a good opportunity to turn the reins over to a new coach- attendance up, revenue up, team barely qualifying for the WAC tourney. and the WAC RPI is so low that SJST and NMST were not invited to the NCAA regional.

  116. Ralph May 26, 2009 3:48 pm

are only those Disney dogs labradors or golden retrievers?

  117. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 3:50 pm

Protector, baseball has evolved into a highly technical game.
If you golf for recreation you can began to appreciate subtle complexities, except in bb the ball is not stationary and moving at .28 of a sec from release to plate.
Most fanz think of baseball as a slow moving game when in fact it takes micro-second reactions to play the game.
As an example, take the ball Kolt caught in centerfield that was shown in the newspaper the next day.
At the crack of the bat, Kolt turned his back on the ball, sprinted to a spot he projected off the ping, turned, sideways, and jumped as the ball found his glove.
Had he tracked the fight of the ball visually, his arm pumping would have deaccellerated his sprint and Kolt would not have made the catch.
LOL. How many fans actually realized the beauty of that catch?

Ditto with comments on this board pertaining to 2 pitching coaches. So what? Trap knows what he is doing in terms of mechanics, release, etc. The other coach is on board.

    So let the opinion mount.
Bottomline, JD aint walking on ground he is altogether solid.
If anything, Donovan gave himself a pass.

  118. Ralph May 26, 2009 3:56 pm

Shoji reports that Alexis Forsythe, DII transfer, was a HS player he had looked at when she played club ball and at Temecula HS. She should challenge for playing time…that’s good news…esp. if her 6’4″ is legit and not PR padded for the media guide.

  119. Ralph May 26, 2009 3:59 pm

Hewitt, Fowler and Forsythe all 6’3 or taller challenging for one MB position, adds depth, with Kaufmann at the other. Incoming Tuaniga will challenge Cubi-Otineru for the opposite, leaving Ferrell and Danielson on the LS.

  120. wahinefan May 26, 2009 3:59 pm

Ralph I agree. One good season in 8 years is not good enough for me.
Even back in coach Trap’s lone regional appearace his team struggled at the plate.

I don’t know how he is gonna turn it around in one year, Especially losing our best Pitcher and VInnie.

Plus giving him only a one year extension is gonna set us back big time.

  121. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 4:03 pm

However, the salient fact that JD understands well–a %40 rise in attendance–the best in 12 years.

Look, throw away your RPIs and season records–bottomline–Fresnecks were 6-10 with 8 games remaining and 8-12 going into their final series on the road.
They swept the series and finished at .500 and advanced to the WAC, than to the regionals.
Last year they entered Omaha as a team with one of the worst records and by the time they beat georgia to take it all, they did become the team with the worst record to capture a CWS.
Coach Mike is closer to achieving our goals than a UHAD selection committee can take us over the next 8 years.
    get out of here!

  122. Committed Road Warrior May 26, 2009 4:09 pm

A one-year contract extension may impact recuriting to an extent…..but not as much than if the UHAD were to terminate Coach Trapasso and have the new coach start from scratch.

People complain about recruiting, number of wins, attendance, etc. Seems like its “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” if you’re in the shoes of the UHAD having to make a decision about Trapasso’s future. Whatever they do, people will continue to complain. Can’t seem to please ’em…..

  123. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 4:20 pm

I find it laughable that some can level captious crticism at a baseball program that just finished a very successful season at its gate and at a coach who has shown progress yet have nothing to say about our men or wahine basketball programs that sustained a $1.3 m dollar shortfall in FY 2007-2008 and is expected to exceed that amount significantly this FY.
    It only gets worst.

The men’s basketball program is one of the three cash cows of the nineteen and will sustain a loss over $700,000 this year….didnt JD give Bob Nash a one year extension?
He hasnt broke even yet….JD is beggin him to just coach mediocrity and he will be extended again.
    Wasnt Bolla given a roll-over?

It seems to me we have enuff problems with our basketball program to keep most fanz busy with effigy fodder.
Unless, they just dont understand baseball.

  124. whitey May 26, 2009 4:25 pm

Corrine Casioppo, Mesa State, 6′ 3″ is the other transfer. She is originally from Temecula Valley

  125. Ralph May 26, 2009 4:36 pm

warriorfanny2 you must have missed all the e bolla complaints on this site and the disbelief that HF gave him a three year rollover that most did not hear about.

some of us did not agree with the Nash extension…the common denominator often heard, oh he is a nice guy and deserves a chance..paid his dues….hard facts, without a winning program, people won’t pay premium prices to watch mediocrity. who’s fault? players? coaches? AD? all of them? buck stops at the AD’s office, he needs a winning program playing a challenging schedule to draw the fans to operate in the black numbers.

  126. madeinhawaii May 26, 2009 4:38 pm

    warriorfanny2,

While I am disappointed with Nash’s production these past two season, I also feel bad that he only had a three-year contract to start, and was late getting the nod, at that. So in his first full recruting season he only had two years left on his contract and, I believe, two less scholarships to offer. The less years you have on your contract, the harder I think it is to recruit, much less find good assistant/associate coaches. Even with three years it’s hard to ask someone to uproot and join an untested program for no more than three ‘guaranteed’ years.

After reading the arguments above, I have to agree that 1-year extensions may be more detrimental than beneficial. Maybe, 2-year with incentives with a smaller second year buy out if during the second year the University decides to let the coach go.

  127. wahinefan May 26, 2009 4:41 pm

So because the basketball programs are terrible, baseball should be exempt from criticism?

UH Baseball has more advantages than basketball ( better local talent, GREAT BALLPARK)
Bottom line UH baseball should always be better than UH basketball.

UH baseball under coach Trap has been mediocre. Not winning the WAC tournament at home is just pathetic.
I will root for the team next year, but I don’t expect them to finish better than 4th in the WAC (per usual under Trap)

  128. whitey May 26, 2009 4:46 pm

interesting facts about alexis forsythe. she signed on with oregon state in 2008, but somehow transfered to houston baptist without playing for the beavers. she is a highly rated player out of hs.

  129. vballfan1 May 26, 2009 4:50 pm

I expect Forsythe to start, althought alot of people at volleytalk are saying Cascioppo is the better of the two.

  130. whitey May 26, 2009 4:52 pm

one of the major difference between uh bkb and bb is that the major league teams have scouts assigned to hawaii and we have a lot of people in hawaii who truly know how to play baseball and recognize talent. the problem with uh bb is that coach trap’s 2 asst are from oahu and their relationship with the youth and high school teams is very questionable, so recruiting within the local scene is very minimal. somehow uh bb think that they know more than the community about players and this is a huge mistake by them.

  131. Ralph May 26, 2009 4:58 pm

Cascioppo, Tuaniga and Cubi-Otineru battle for the RS, Opposite hitter role….gives us depth…if Ferrell’s leg heals fully before Fall workouts I believe she will be a major player at LS with Danielson…if Tuaniga and Cascioppo are as advertised, maybe Cubi-Otineru can switch to Libero as did Hittle…for the team…

  132. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 5:00 pm

    This is my take:
    1. baseball will get better….a turn-over at UH is akin to a deathwish and at this time, hurts more than helps.
    2. men’s basketball is a deadbeat program in a recession–aloha to Bob Nash.
    3. wahine basketball is the biggest blood-sucker of the 19 UH programs (approaching -$1M deficit/yr) and should be dropped…get another wahine sport that doesnt suck $1m a year from an administration that can ill- afford soap.

  133. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:04 pm

warriorfanny2 i may be wrong but either the WAC or NCAA mandates that wbb be part of the sports offered at the university to meet gender equity issues and it is considered the main if not one of the major women sports at the university level…

  134. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:05 pm

when Hittle played both basketball and volleyball, wbb had to pickup her scholarship- lucky for Shoji, he had one more to give out

  135. Bulla May 26, 2009 5:12 pm

Just a thought regarding Men’s VB coach,

    he has NEVER coached a men’s team…ever
it was Dave Shoji’s win-loss record, not his
he only played JC ball, in a limited role

i think Mr Wong would have been a better choice, and also, why a 5 year contract? why not a year to year, with an extension after year 3 for 2 years? this would protect all parties involved, and be in the best interest of the program.

if i were recruiting someone interested in going to UH, it would be easy….i would ask the recruit 3 questions:

do you think coaching girls is the same as coaching boys?
who was the last player that the coach developed to reach ‘the next level’?
would you rather be part of an established program, or do you want to establish a program?

    just thinking out loud…….

  136. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:13 pm

isn’t June or July the end of the UH fiscal year? before Fall fb practice we should see the black and red numbers for men and women sports. I’m interested in the mbkball, mvb, mbb, soccer, wbkb and softball numbers. all of them play in arena or stadium which can generate revenue.

  139. whitey May 26, 2009 5:17 pm

  140. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 5:21 pm

    FTBL n BSBL–mucho!

  141. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:24 pm

Bulla there really isn’t a next level for men in vb….Olympics very limited opportunities even for players on the best programs…most of the top players overseas are Europeans, not Americans…even in wvb most are not Americans.. Our UH established program has languished the last few years based on attendance so it needs to be jump started and reestablish itself as a power house…with rally scoring, the women game is like the men game, all power…serve tough, receive serve, pass, set and you got to have someone to terminate (kill) and in the men game it is usually helps to have tall, athletic types pounding away.

  142. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:28 pm

every short vb player,6 footers, want to come to UH because we are probably the only one starting several 6′ up front in a game whereas they end up as DS on other teams unless their game is like Yuval Katz and Allen Allen..

  143. chawan_cut May 26, 2009 5:31 pm

    homey, crw,
i did not use either. foot power all the way.

  144. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:33 pm

Whitey Koakane is the man to ask…..but you got to ask him what they look like playing before the 7th inning, by then, because he would have already drank a 12 pak and his judgment would be skewed…

  145. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:34 pm

Al and his little birdie is another source for HS baseball…some of us are OIA guys, others ILH, and the consummate fan watches both leagues

Oh Distinguished WarriorFanny2. We beseech you to show us the way. We know nothing. We are unworthy. We are the unwashed, brainless followers of the UH Green Machine. Help us understand baseball as much as you do, oh chosen one. Most of us feel like we just arrived here on planet earth yesterday. We never been taught how to turn and sprint after a fly ball, rather than back pedal. Never knew the difference between bats, other than the fact that one can’t fly. Never thought about throwing a faster pitch that could be hard to hit if you could make it do stuff. Gosh we have so much to learn and so fortunate to have your well spring of knowledge right here on Stephen Tsai’s blog to learn all these wonderful terms. Are we just lucky we live Hawaii, or what?

  148. Bulla May 26, 2009 5:36 pm

    Ralph,

having said what you did about UH using 6 footers up front and every other team having the taller players, how do you recruit those type of players to a program that traditionally hasn’t.

the challenge with UH, and this goes for all sports is that we end up with very few ‘blue chip’ players and make up for it with our ‘blue collar’ players who do very well.

what i was trying to put on the table so to speak, is the selection process in itself. there were some other viable candidates that should have been considered, but it was more of a status quo ‘yeah, submit your resume and we might take a look at it’. i think this was a done deal before it was a deal.

    just my 2 sense

  149. whitey May 26, 2009 5:38 pm

know al knows plenty about bb and he is ok till the end of the game, but koakane is the connesseur (don’t know how to spell or could be like koakane after the 7th inning), then got to ask him.

  150. Bulla May 26, 2009 5:39 pm

Our attendance has languished at Men’s VB because the program does not have a draw….plain and simple. What would compel anyone to go to the games? We are not a powerhouse, not even sure if were a powerhouse in years past, but we did have a few years of great competition, and that was clouded by the NCAA penalizing us for illegal participation.

i was just thinking if the selection process was as comprehensive as it could’ve been, that’s all. good luck to all UH teams. IMUA LANAKILA

  151. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 5:40 pm

I like Kanani and Kim cuz they are athletic VB players.
Get more of them if u cant get the ultimate dominatrix.
Tall means nothing without athletic abilities or game instinct.
Despite a relative slump in the post lily-kim era, wahine VB still represents a successful beacon among 19 UH programs….PPV is cutting into its gate and for the life of me I cant understand the wisdom in this K….except that it benefits Fink more than the entire UH program.

  152. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:42 pm

Bulla you probably right, but without knowing who was on the original 25-30 applicant list it is hard to tell..lacks transparency…but then again the UH president candidate pulled out after being told that his or her candidacy would be part of an open forum. WBB had 85 candidates, but the finalist list was screwed up, unless Ferd screwed up, juggled, fumbled, and oops the 5 became 6 finalists. Oh Marilyn, where are your marbles…

  153. Bulla May 26, 2009 5:45 pm

WBB is at a pivotal juncture, i feel sad for Coach Goo and all of the countless hours of hard work, blood, sweat and tears he poured into the program…..Bolla came in and brought the foundation to it’s knees. and then Bolla’s wife gets hired also, talk about 2 bolla’s being a bolla kukai…sheeesh.

i just hope they can get their program in gear and get it back at least to the level that coach vince had them at, then we’re making progress.

  154. whitey May 26, 2009 5:49 pm

now, now, ralph. some of the tsaikos said that the decision of the wbb is not nfa and her committee, but jd’s job. the nfa has no responsibility at uh, but draws a salary because she has a title.

  155. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:49 pm

warriorfanny2 we’ve been blessed with exceptional vb players with high IQ at setter and OH, but our middles were average at best and did not have the athleticism of a Bown or Collins to make a difference and we haven’t had steady play in the back row to contend for the NCAA championship although we at least reached the final 8 and final 4 a few times in recent memory.

  156. warriorfanny2 May 26, 2009 5:50 pm

critical_case….appreciate ur gratidude, hopefully u enjoy the subtleties of baseball enuff to add to UH attendance in 2010.
    Go forward son….and take a little bro w u.

  158. Kekoa May 26, 2009 5:53 pm

Bulla ~ I hear you loud and clear! Wish we could have a respected member of the athletic/academic community, such as yourself, have an opportunity to speak for the rest of us. Something like an Ombudsman for the ordinary UH fan. Don’t need to have a vote, just another voice of reason for a selection crew to listen to.

Al, would you be up for something like this? How about you WF2?

  159. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:53 pm

Bulla the wbb will revive, JJ did it after von appen, there is hope.

  160. whitey May 26, 2009 5:54 pm

the formula women vb had national champs is because their middle play and player were exceptional. when coach shoji dumped the middle to concentrate on the outside, they were doomed till bowan showed up, but again shoji tried to play the outside when his best player was bowan.

  161. Ralph May 26, 2009 5:56 pm

Bulla did you see my jargermeister post yesterday…..mr. frank whose distillery produced jargermeister gave Brown University 100 million dollars and he attended only one year at Brown. Lots jargermeister bombers made him a happy businessman..

  162. whitey May 26, 2009 5:58 pm

so now, it appears that shoji realizes that he has no middle and is very fortunate to get these 2 transfers, but will we see a different offense or a string of continuous left side hitting?????? (that sinks the wahines)

  163. whitey May 26, 2009 6:00 pm

ralph, how’s about getting genshiro to donate a couple of his homes to uh foundation????? he has property next to me, but no homes here on maui.

Whitey did you take all of Marilyn’s marbles?

  165. WARRIOR FANNY TWO May 26, 2009 6:01 pm

JIM DONOVAN IS FAT AND I DON’T LIKE HIM.

I LIKE BASEBALL BECAUSE THEY WERE WINNING MORE THIS TIME.

WE SHOULD GET RID OF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BECAUSE I SAID SO EVEN THOUGH IT IS A WAC REQUIREMENT. I MAKE MORE SENSE.

  166. Bulla May 26, 2009 6:04 pm

    whitey,

mahalo for the props, UH Women’s vb became too predictable, every time they had to keep pounding the outside…….and where did we go? well, WAC was awesome, post season we choked…consistently, but oh well, such is life.

    ralphy,

after coach fred what happened left, we could only go up…..we did, meteoric for some, expected by others, still we won games and then JJ leaves….it was a calculated move on his part, i won’t go there as to not offend all of the JJ lovers, but JJ is a businessman and looks out for JJ first, don’t even kid yourself.

so now we have coach mac…love the guy, i’d love any guy who had a 1,000% pay increase just for being in the right spot at the right time. heck, that was done without any H/C experience, now that is even more meteoric than JJ or Bill Clinton going to the White House. proof is in the pudding for coach mac, this is a pivotal season for him, 7-7 will not cut it, and it’s time to get some ROI as ‘stakeholders’ (as compared to steak holders if he loses).

just throwing stuff out there for everyone, remember this, JJ’s pay was $400k from the state and the other $400k was from the boosters. translation is his retirement would be based only on the $400k. it’s a DIFFERENT story with coach mac, who’s base is $1,000,000 that’s right boyz and girlz, the highest paid state employee ever in Hawaii. now that…….is the rest of the story.

  167. wafan May 26, 2009 6:04 pm

Some good discussions; some more opinionated than others. We shall find out eventually. In any case support the ‘Bows, Warriors, whatever else.

  168. Ralph May 26, 2009 6:05 pm

Whitey the buck does stop at JD’s door, but like all chain of command, MMK is an associate AD under him and her actions or lack of is still his responsibility that he delegated..same goes for Clapp and McNamara….

  169. whitey May 26, 2009 6:05 pm

ralph, in my youth (which is so long ago i cannot remember) i was not too good with marbles, but was awesome with milk covers.

  170. Bulla May 26, 2009 6:05 pm

    ralph,

in regards to the bomber story and donations….shooot, my wife is supporting Brown instead of UH…..that’s it, i am going to make her start eating humble pie so she can get in alignment with the administration…..

  171. Ralph May 26, 2009 6:07 pm

to support UH she got to start making pineapple swipe

  172. Bulla May 26, 2009 6:07 pm

whew, that’d be some mean stuff…still need the jaegger to kill it i think. maybe we partner with Brown university and take 10% off the top for us?

  174. Bulla May 26, 2009 6:11 pm

    hey guyz,

it’s been fun, i am going to go to jose’s because hose b’s is not open. nah, the boss wants to look for cactus juice….does patron ring a bell, it will soon…i’ll check in later tonight to see how i can rustle the bushes. last time i rustled the bushes, A-joe jumped out with his Indiana Gomes hat and scared the kaka out of me……whew.

be back later, play nicely and don’t pick on my 3 lettered friend, DPK (dee punch bowl king)

  175. Ralph May 26, 2009 6:11 pm

football coaches get state retirement? i thought they were contract workers, paid a salary, with contractual benefits only. Like JJ got a bunch of fb tickets, etc…but like all contractual workers they provided their own retirement, medical, etc.

  183. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 26, 2009 6:19 pm

Not surprised Coach Trapasso got an extension, I’m actually a little surprised he accepted it. Kinda thought he’d fish for the 5-year deals.

I hope that these extensions are filled with provisions like expectations for a better post season showing, increases in attendance, out of conference opponents, etc…

  184. Ralph May 26, 2009 6:22 pm

Donovan stated on kgmb that there are between 8 to 10 finalists when asked to comment on the wbb coach’s selection…oops changed again or did I hear it wrong…

  188. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 26, 2009 6:34 pm

    Ralph:

    May 26th, 2009 at 5:13 pm

I’m interested in the mbkball, mvb, mbb, soccer, wbkb and softball numbers. all of them play in arena or stadium which can generate revenue.

Ralph, c’mon they all lost money. Well.. maybe baseball got some back but I would actually be surprised if they finish in the black.

As for Wahine soccer and Wahine softball I don’t know if charging admission would be successful and may just ADD to the costs of operating a revenue sport (i.e. ticket printing, staff to work at the games, security, etc…) versus the income from it.

ST can probably verify this, but back when Wahine softball charged admission, they drew like 150 fans as opposed to the average # of around 350-500 with free admission. Then to think of the cost of having to print tickets and have student help (paid) to operate the ticket machines or whatever, plus ushers (paid) like at Les Murakami, etc…

I think it would be a more of a loss than it already is.

Still not a fan of having the Wahine soccer program play their games out in Waipahu especially considering that Ching Field is now ready, but I think Coach Tenzing prefers to play on real grass.

  189. Ralph May 26, 2009 6:36 pm

Kazz you can start getting excited with baseball, UH non conference schedule includes Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, USC, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton…but the announcement did not state which teams are home games 🙁

  190. Ralph May 26, 2009 6:38 pm

Cooper Dykes pulled out last week, then they added Gavin back to the list

She pulled her name from consideration. Supposedly because… *ahem* … her name was publically released as a candidate. Of course UH never released it, but it was leaked.

So yeah… there goes a good candidate.

    Yup… there she goes.

Uh huh… Well at least people KNEW she applied right? 🙄

  192. Ralph May 26, 2009 6:42 pm

soccer did not have a soccer field to really hold games on prior to Ching field…now that it is in place, I would think the game played at Ching will draw more support, UH can schedule games there… I wonder what the seating capacity of the aluminum bleachers is at the Ching field.

Ralph, of that list, me thinks only Oregon State had the olos to fly to Hawaii to play us at Murakami Stadium.

Well maybe, LBSU and maybe Cal State Fullerton, but that’s about it.

    Just my guess though.

  197. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 26, 2009 6:50 pm

    Ralph,

Generally speaking I am excited for UH sports again come the start of the fall season.

I had fun at baseball this season, but honestly, I actually had more fun in previous years. I guess because there was no real “pressure” or whatnot.

However, when you fall on your face HARD over and over and over again with no real reprise of the team that once represented the Bows earlier in the year, it’s hard to keep smiling.

The team looked like at person attempting 1,000 situps. #s 1 thru 600 looked like he was going to hit 10,000, then you see him start laboring around 650 and then around 710 he needs someone to hold his feet down.

By the time 800 rolls around, his sit-up coach is busy texting on his cell-phone.

900 is here and his brain starts getting flustered and he starts going blind.

995 and then POOF! He collapses.

  198. Kazz (blkberry_storm) May 26, 2009 6:53 pm

    Whitey,

You can also get bees to retreat if you invite them over for a game of poker. Not Texas Hold ‘Em though… more like a game of WAIANAE CHOKE ‘EM.

HoHokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. is truly a wonderful site to hold the WAC T.
It seats 12,000 plus and the entire Park complex is build around the Chicago Cubs spring training program.
It has additional adjacent field facilities and reeks of baseball. At 1,250′ above sea level it is perfect baseball.
    Stadium dimensions are:
    • 340 feet down the leftfield line
    • 350 feet down the rightfield line
    • 410 feet to straight-away centerfield
    • 390 feet to the power alleys

The batter’s eye in centerfield is 80 feet wide by 40 feet high. The outfield fence is 15 feet, 4 inches high.

Its right down the road from Phoenix.

why is our smartest and brightest not attending Graduate School at UH? Jason is a Regents Scholar, 2009 graduate in Math, attending HPU next year. Kelli, Phi Beta Kappa, dual major, attending Chaminade University. Two smaller universities with more to offer than our anchor university? Probably and a good reason Chancellor Hinshaw is overseeing a panel that is streamlining UH programs, combining departments and programs, eliminating a few degrees and certificate programs to guide UH to a higher level. Let’s support her vision for a better UH. These changes will eliminate needless expenditures and put more money where they are needed. A healthier UH can move up to a second tier University in 5 years and hopefully higher.

Article about how the Bears might have to outbid the Patriots for Pisa.

Although free-agent linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa remains very interested in joining the Bears, the former St. Louis Ram continues to check out every option.

Tinoisamoa is on a visit with the New England Patriots Tuesday, according to an NFL source. He visited Halas Hall last week and also made a stop in Buffalo to visit the Bills.

If Tinoisamoa signs with the Bears, he’d likely be the starter at strong-side linebacker alongside Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs.

According to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe, the Patriots brought Tinoisamoa in for a pre-draft visit back in 2003. Tinoisamoa might fit well in New England’s 3-4 scheme, and the Patriots are looking for a replacement for Mike Vrabel, who was traded to Kansas City. But Vrabel played outside, and Tinoisamoa would project to be inside in that scheme.

  221. Garret May 26, 2009 9:17 pm

Article from a Boston paper about how Pisa is a better fit for the Bears’ system than the Patriots’ system.

I personally like Tinoisamoa as a player, even though he’s not a prototype system fit because of his lack of size. I think he might be able to help on third down and in 4-3 packages. My hunch, however, is that the Patriots don’t view him the same way. Also, for Tinoisamoa, he might have a chance for a better contract and playing time in Buffalo and Chicago, both of whom run 4-3 defenses in which he’d fit nicely on the weak side in more of a starting role.

Aloha and a very fine good evening to all –

Had the honor of being part of the blessing and open house at Wena and Bren’s Little Learner’s Preschool this evening. Congratulations and much success to you both!

We left the celebration midway to race home to view my Princess Jamung Korean drama. Just before leaving, however, ST was so kind to allow me to chat with our favorite native son, Colt Brennan. It was a complete surprise, and believe me, one of the biggest thrilling events of my life! As sweat poured off my head, I asked Colt if he was able to read our WB blog, he explained that he has not had much free time to do that. Nevertheless, on behalf of his ardent fans, I wished him all the very best as he continues his career with the Redskins, and I expressed our collective hopes and prayers that he will be given the green light to show the nation what exemplary skills and talent awed us Warrior football fans during his UH Warrior career. Gracious and humble as always, he conveyed his thanks for all the support.

Colt, if you are reading this, just continue to do your very best. Just know that your name alone continues to elicit joy and gratitude from the multitudes that are proud to claim you as a native son of Hawaii. Mahalo and warmest aloha…from Mrs. A-House

    Ralph,

I think that Bulla was correct on the difference between JJ’s contract and Mac’s contract. I remember it being reported at the time Mac was hired that a big difference in their contracts is that half of JJ’s contract came from private donors (which means that only $400k of the $800k was counted for retirement benefits) while all of Mac’s $1.1 million comes from UH (so, all counts towards retirement).

I think Jim Donovan is a sensible guy. May well be that 1-year extensions aren’t an ideal variety, but replacing him wouldn’t be much better, if at all. How do you “reward” 50-55% wins over 8 seasons and at-times maddening inconsistency? 2 years could’ve been a bit too much for Donovan.

I was personally leaning towards 2 years myself, since there is some developing talent on the team, but I don’t necessarily see 1 year as wrong. Maybe more of a wake-up call or a message from JD that Trap should work on what ails the team, and soon. We do well enough next season, I’m sure JD will extend Trap’s contract accordingly. If not, well JD may decide it’s time for a new coach.

UH search committees haven’t been absolutely stellar lately…

Ralph: I’m going to HPU cause it has a good M.Ed. program, HPU is more convenient for me with respect to class times and location, and because UH’s program is not very good. In some fields, UH is one of the best. Their College of Education is not a strongpoint. I’m not sure they should eliminate the programs they are looking at, because they can be very important programs, but they should definitely re-evaluate everything they are doing there.

My thought as to why Trap got a one-year extension, and not two or three years: Next year, we’ll have a team heavy with game-seasoned juniors and seniors. If Vinnie returns, that will make things even better. It will be the best chance, I think, UH has of making it into and advancing through the postseason. If Trap can’t do it with next year’s team, then he won’t be able to do it with any team. In that case, 2011 will bring a new coach, who will have some talented juniors and sophomores to build a team with.

I just hope the players don’t think they have a lame duck coach. If he does well with the team next year, I think that will be good enough to warrant a further extension. So I think he has a legit shot to stay; but if the players think he’s a lame duck, and they play unmotivated, then Trap will have no shot.

I know there are recruiting concerns as well. Well, if the ‘Bows show they are a winning team, Donovan might want to give Trap a vote of confidence during the season. He might want to have an extension or new contract ready to sign mid-season if things really look good, although some coaches are reluctant to deal during the season, and there’s always the risk of a meltdown like we had this year. Somehow, though, I’m not too worried about recruiting. I get the feeling it’ll be a no-brainer decision about his future either way, and the recruits will be able to sense that.

JD is quoted as saying that one of the 8 finalist should be announced as the next coach for wbb by next week. The interviews are on going and Wolfe and Petersen are said to have been interviewed already.. wow from an original 5, three were dropped, a new list of 5 was drawn up, then a 6 (Gavin Petersen) is added, now there are a total of 8…lots of rumors, lack of transparency on the actual number of finalists for the job…even if JD couldn’t share the names, he could have at least stated that of the 85 applicants, only x numbers will be interviewed as finalists…No transparency JD, shame on you…

Looks like the Patriots brought in Pisa and another LB yesterday and they are close to signing the other LB.

The Patriots are close to reaching an agreement with free agent linebacker Paris Lenon, according to a league source. The club entertained another free agent linebacker in Pisa Tinoisamoa yesterday, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Lenon, 31, spent the first five seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Detroit Lions in March 2006. He led Detroit in tackles in ’08 (career-best 121, 81 solo). Like Tinoisamoa, Lenon projects as an inside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme.

Bucking the trend in D3 football, Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR announced the approval of their Bd of Trustees to reinstate their football program as soon as the 2010 season. (They dropped it back in the 80’s)

They will compete in the Northwest Conference as they do in other sports.

Campus Life’s Kelli and her appagom will be really happy…

d1, actually they cut football after the ’91 season. it will be good to have another team in the NWC, as long as LC doesn’t think about dropping it’s program. It would be nice to have an 8 team conference

It seems the more things change, the more things stay the same. I’m in my mid-50s now, but the parking situation at & near UH sucked back then & it sucks now. I had to go to UH prior to the previous football season because my tickets had not arrived as of 4 days before the first game. The 3rd straight year this has happened. By the way, does anyone know why printing of football tickets is still out-sourced to the mainland?? Sorry, I digress. Had to go on-campus tp pick up re-printed tickets, but the parking lot was filled. Had to park almost a mile away to find parking & hiked in. There’s been precious little improvement or alleviation of the parking system. And I feel for the students & visitors who will have to shell out 5 bucks for parking in July & $6 in the Fall?? Was there any attempt at problem-solving at all?? Almost 38 years?? Come on.

  268. Baseball Fan May 28, 2009 4:28 am

I would agree with Mr. Tsai about the contract extension. I believe that the AD really doesn’t understand what baseball really is. Yes, it does hurt recruiting and stability, but the program is on the rise. They brought a really good class of 2008 recruits to build on, however this could hurt 2009. I think they need to replace the AD and get someone in there that understands sports

  269. al May 31, 2009 5:04 pm

    i agree too.
