Speeding up Pro Day

Hawaii’s pro day, which is usually held a few weeks before the NFL draft, is expected to be moved to early March in 2012.

Almost every FBS school has a pro day in which its draft-eligible players perform running, jumping, weight-lifting and football drills in front of NFL scouts.

Because of UH’s isolation, its pro day was held in Carson, Calif., and bracketed with the pro days for USC and UCLA. While that schedule attracted large attendance from scouts, it hindered the Warriors’ lesser-known players. For instance, former UH safety Mana Silva was the sensation of Β UH’s 2011 pro day, which was held on April 1, but that did not give scouts enough time to further evaluate him. Silva was not drafted, but he ended up signing three free-agent contracts.

Plans are in the works for UH’s pro day to follow the NFL combine, which will be held Feb. 22-28 in 2012.

Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga has chosen Michael Hoffman as his agent. Hoffman also represents running back Alex Green and linebacker Aaron Brown.

* * * * *

Double-duty continues for Norm Chow, who arrives in El Paso today ahead of Saturday’s Sun Bowl.

Because of the Sun Bowl, recruiting and the coaches convention, Chow won’t be back in Hawaii for another couple of weeks. While assembling his coaching staff, he will interview current UH staff members either by telephone or on the mainland. After all of the dead periods, there will be four weekends remaining in which recruits may be brought in for visits.

Belated birthday wishes to Chawan Cut and SteveM.

  9. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 8:37 am

Thought it was interesting that some mainland-raised UH players, who were hopeful of playing in the Hawaii Bowl, remain in town.

  10. Kaimuki Kid December 26, 2011 8:37 am

    Now the wait begins….Recruiting time

  11. Bugaz December 26, 2011 8:38 am

  12. Bugaz December 26, 2011 8:39 am

    Oops good luck

  13. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 8:39 am

That was a whirlwind time for Chow.

He left Salt Lake City Thursday morning, arrived in Hawaii late Thursday morning, attended a news conference, reception, and basketball game, ate a late dinner, and then was back on an airplane at 12:30 a.m. Friday.

  14. Bugaz December 26, 2011 8:41 am

Hawaii Bowl was terrible! So cold and wet but at least it was Hawaii and not Michigan!!!

  15. Kaimuki Kid December 26, 2011 8:41 am

Congratulations to Men’s BB team on their wins over the weekend

  16. Bugaz December 26, 2011 8:42 am

Good showing by the Warrior Bball team. Way to go guys!

  17. Bugaz December 26, 2011 8:43 am

Hopefully the whirlwind brings in some good recruits.

    Good Morning Gangeez! πŸ™‚

    Top tirdy!

Best of luck to our Pro-Day Warriors! May their NFL dreams come true.

    Same here, ai-eee-soos!

  24. papajoe2 December 26, 2011 8:56 am

Just made it huh, Kapahulu. Good morning to you and your family. Hope your Christmas as as good or even better than mine.

  25. azwarrior22 December 26, 2011 8:57 am

Top 25. I assume NC will try to have his assistants in place this week so they can do the full court press after the dead period. Remember NC said that no one would outwork them and they would all be good recruiters, so they need to have their plans in place this week.

  26. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 8:58 am

It will be an interesting Sun Bowl with the meeting of UH coaches past (Paul Johnson, Buzz Preston) and present (Norm Chow).

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid December 26, 2011 8:58 am

Hey pj2 and errybody else here this fine morning! Season’s greetings to you all, good to see you folks here. πŸ™‚

  28. Da Punchbowl Kid December 26, 2011 8:59 am

    #26 –

Mornin’ Mr. Tsai. Yep that game is a must see!

  29. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 9:00 am

There is a slight window next week for recruiting. Chow will work that, then there’s another dead period. Dead, semi-dead, dead. I think the NCAA is inspired by the Twilight movies.

  30. tommui December 26, 2011 9:01 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

AL -where’s the birdie? What is it singing?

  31. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 9:02 am

There definitely will be a different vibe for pro day this year, especially with Chad Ikei having relocated to Hawaii.

  32. papajoe2 December 26, 2011 9:03 am

It’s funny to me reading all the comments about Coach Chow’s last name. He’s 65 years old and probably heard it all, but maybe not as much since his elementary school days. Somebody actually took advantage of it and made some pretty good money. $25 for a t-shirt?? Probably cost less than $5 to produce it. I hope they donate some of the proceeds to Na Koa. No need be plenty. Every little bit helps.

  33. LizKauai (iPad) December 26, 2011 9:05 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Nice morning for jook and rest!

  34. LizKauai (iPad) December 26, 2011 9:06 am

All the best to our Warrior alumni aspiring to play at the next level!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid December 26, 2011 9:08 am

We missed ya yesterday Mr. Tsai, can ya tell? Talk about waiting to exhale.

  36. papajoe2 December 26, 2011 9:11 am

Missed the blog too, but the rest was nice. ST, you just made us recharge. LOL

  37. papajoe2 December 26, 2011 9:12 am

Huzzit DPK. Looking forward to seeing you at some of the softball games. Are you going? I only went to 1 last year but hope to make more this year.

  38. chopsueyboy December 26, 2011 9:21 am

Spent Christmas attending UH mens basketball game

and staying for the next 2. Thanks Santa!

  39. Bugaz December 26, 2011 9:21 am

Well as long as Coach doesn’t bring in dead weight during all this dead periods Warriors should do fine, and hopefully all current guys are working hard already.

  40. Old Diver December 26, 2011 9:22 am

Who’s in charge of Pro Day this year?

  41. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 9:23 am

    dpk/papajoe2:

I read a rather inappropriate (for Christmas) comment a couple of days ago, and decided I wasn’t going to spend Christmas dealing with someone’s anger. Besides, I had parties to attend.

  42. Bugaz December 26, 2011 9:25 am

Hearing him during the press conference I work put in twice the work if my schollership was on the line. Good luck all! Would hate to see anyone cut.

  43. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 9:25 am

    Old Diver:

Athletes’ Performance usually runs UH’s pro day.

That outfit is based at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

  44. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 9:29 am

Setting up visits is the main thing.

Going last can be an advantage.

UH has players in place for offense. For instance, it’s easy to envision Jared Leaf as an H-back.

UH is looking at a DC who won’t be available for at least another week. That person, I think, is a 3-4 guy. Then again, UH ran a variation of the 3-4 most of last year.

  45. Pomai December 26, 2011 9:32 am

As long as we attack attack attack

  46. PowderPuff December 26, 2011 9:38 am

Glad the blog is back, ST. Hope you had an awesome day with your family. Big wishes to the 2 Christmas birthday boys, c_c and SteveM.

Re #19 – I hear ya, Bugaz. I’m bloggers’ S.I.G. – sister in gout. Went to Down to Earth this morning for some Black Cherry Juice – yuuuum!!! πŸ™‚

Mmmm, earlier Pro Day…I wonder if it’ll be around the same time as a UH men’s volleyball roadtrip?

  47. PolyMom December 26, 2011 9:40 am

It does suck that UH has to have Pro Day with USC and UCLA. They do so much marketing of their players. By the time our boys get there since they have no TV time on the east coast no one knows our players. Thus you heard Norm Chow say on Saturday afternoons. He wants our players to get a following. Folks have to learn their names. UH is a scrappy team that once you get to know the players you want to watch them play.

Adam Farand at AP in Carson has done wonders for the kid. The training is hard, top notch Coaches. But very expensive for these kids. But worth every penny.

  48. Da Punchbowl Kid December 26, 2011 9:44 am

    #41 –

    Can’t blame you, Mr. Tsai.

  49. LizKauai (iPad) December 26, 2011 9:44 am

#45 – attack on the field, not on the blog, right?

  50. LizKauai (iPad) December 26, 2011 9:45 am

PolyMom, I must have missed the url for your blog, could you post it, please?

  51. rog December 26, 2011 9:47 am

Is this DC Rocky Seto as the Seahawks have one game left?

  52. Don Weir (We-Ah) December 26, 2011 9:58 am

    PapaJoe2 & Tsaiko Readers,

Butigroove jumped on the T-shirts but it does not appear any of the profits will flow to UHAD in any way. The name combination is cute but there was a very important statement made by Coach Chow in the news conference.

In the press conference Coach Chow stated

    ‘We Will Chase Championships’

PolyMom and I are putting together a t-shirt that has the UH logo on the front and this quote on the back along with the Coach Chow’s name under the quote. We are using a Lifetime Letterwinner Club member’s company to create the shirts, he is giving us a big time discount, and all proceeds will go to Na Koa.

What do you all think this shirt should sell for?

    Anybody interested?

BigHiloFan, this would look very good on you in combination with your helmet!!

  53. Wes'side Warrior December 26, 2011 9:59 am

    Howzit, everyone! Alooooooohaaaaaaaaa from Georgia!

Pretty laid back day yesterday. Felt kinda lost without the WB to read and interact. But good to play with Lego’s and stuff again! hahaha!

Happy birthday SteveM and Chawan_Cut! Hope Santa was nice to you this year!

Keep training hard and good luck to all Warriors and former Warriors!

Our Warrior basketballers now realize they CAN compete and win with storied programs! Great confidence boost to the program! Keep it going!

As Howard Jones sang, “Things Can Only Get Better”!!!

  54. Wes'side Warrior December 26, 2011 10:02 am

Sounds good, Don Weir! If those T-shirts are available to us, I’ll surely put an order in!

  55. Bugaz December 26, 2011 10:03 am

Will Coach be going after guys that already committed elsewhere since he has a late start.

  56. Bugaz December 26, 2011 10:06 am

I’m interested in those shirts, but cost depends on quality of shirt and printing and so on.

  57. Bulla December 26, 2011 10:25 am

    #50 Liz,

I missed it also πŸ™ was hoping to have some good reading during the black out periods…

  58. 808Bowler December 26, 2011 10:26 am

Sound like a good idea on shirts. I would put a order in.

  59. tommui December 26, 2011 10:27 am

DON WEIR – if the sales helps UH (Na Koa), I don’t worry about the material – after all I still got a JJ “Promises Kept” t-shirt! – wonder what I can get for it on e-Bay???

  60. tommui December 26, 2011 10:27 am

And belated best wishes to Chawan Cut and SteveM.

  63. d1shima December 26, 2011 10:33 am

Is the plan that Hawaii’s Pro Day will be in the same city/venue as the NFL Combine?

  64. LizKauai (iPad) December 26, 2011 10:33 am

Don Weir, all proceeds or all profits will go to Na Koa?

  65. al December 26, 2011 10:42 am

happy birthday to stevem and CHOWan_cut

  66. agena December 26, 2011 10:45 am

    From Website – Football Scoop

Hawaii: We have learned that Philip Rauscher will also be part of Norm Chow staff. He’ll have a position on the offensive side of the ball; most likely tight ends we’re told.

Hawaii: Sources tell us that Norm Chow has brought Utah grad assistant Lewis Powell with him. Powell will coach the defensive line.

  67. SteveM December 26, 2011 10:49 am

    Good morning everyone!

Thank you for the birthday wishes, here and in Facebook!

chawan_cut and I were talking about a joint birthday party last year. Problem is, it is a very busy time for family and all suitable commercial venues are closed on the actual birthday. Saw chawan_cut posting from the SSC on the 25th….hmmm, wonder how the karaoke would be in there? πŸ™„

  68. madeinhawaii December 26, 2011 10:51 am

    Happy Birthday SteveM… and you, too… Chawan-cut!

  69. hossana December 26, 2011 11:00 am

Hey, Don Weir…..i would like 2 x-large when you start producing those T-shirts….preferably color is white or black….where will you be selling those t-shirts when or if you do decide to go into production…

  70. Keoni Ana December 26, 2011 11:00 am

In 2010, Hawaii offered a scholarship to a HS freshmen in LB Sua Cravens, then UCLA offered too. I hope UH continues to recruit in Temecula valley Area, this is where we got K Dan Kelly, Bubba Luna and John Hardy-Tuliau just to name a few. SDSU recruits hard here..

  71. jkjones December 26, 2011 11:07 am

narrow window to select staff, organize and player-recruit effectively. too close. common sense dictates Chow will bring in several heavy hitters immediately to help most of the existing staff with recruiting and after LOI day, complete his staff selections and releases in time for spring training and practice…as we all know, player-recruiting is ongoing and can run all the way up to fall camp. Chow may also do scholarship reviews and player-cuts too. Not uncommon among incoming coaches to make more room available for his personal choices or transfers.

  72. tommui December 26, 2011 11:09 am

66 agena – are the two coming over as GAs?

  73. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2011 11:11 am

Nope. DC candidate is not with Seahawks.

  74. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 26, 2011 11:14 am

Wow! I though that gout was something overweight folks suffered from. After seeing PowerPuff on the sidelines during last Thursday’s basketball game, she certainly is the exception to that rule-of-thumb.

We saw all 12 basketball games in the Diamond Head Classic – great experience – and talked to many of the visiting fans.

Again, what I don’t understand is why there isn’t a major effort to put together expanded travel packages for visiting fans. In 2009 after attending a conference on sustainable tourism at the Campus Center, I tried to get the School of Travel Industry Management, the Hawai`i Tourism Authority, and the Department of Athletics to put together a visiting fans’ travel program, but nothing ever happened. Over 100 teams in eight major sports come here to play every academic year. Surely, we can handle an additional 100,000 visitors from late August through early May.

After all, this is Hawai`i – not Nowhere, Nebraska. Would our location be an additional draw beyond the game or match?

    %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

As someone who has ordered lots of tees over the years for various groups, I now have a different set of standards other than price alone: American-made fabrics as well as the blanks themselves to support the national economy and local designers to support the local economy now drive my decisions.

RE price, why not build a publicized donation into the price-per-shirt. We’ve done that before and wound up making about $4 per shirt.

I certainly think that a shirt costing around $18 for normal sizes with a lesser charge for kids and a greater one for anyone wearing XX and above would be an appropriate.

We’re just wrapping up our house chores and will be going for a hike in town – either the Aiea Loop or Tantalus – before going to a 1953 Dr. Seuss film being shown at one of the film societies.

By the way, the Department of Land & Natural Resources is ssponsoring a New Year’s Sunrise Hike up the Makapu`u Trail. Will post more information about it later on.

Happy BurpDay to everyone born around this time of year. Must be a bummare having to squeeze two-into-one special days.

  75. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 26, 2011 11:20 am

    #73,

That is very disappointing to read. Was hoping Seto would be the new DC or at least be on the staff. If Chow really wants him, maybe some Punahou USC alumns will have a few choice words with Seto to convince him.

  76. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 26, 2011 11:30 am

Then again with Seto being so loyal to Pete, maybe it wouldn’t be a good fit.

  77. whitey December 26, 2011 11:32 am

post Merry Christmas and pre Happy New Year Tsaikos.

  78. A-House December 26, 2011 12:10 pm

got so busy yesterday, finally got on the blog only to find our good neighbor has shut it down for Christmas

therefore, a belated X-mas to all Tsaikos near and far!

  79. Don Weir (We-Ah) December 26, 2011 12:16 pm

    LizKauai,

All profits will go to Na Koa. I am not a middle man and not taking any cut.

I will front the total cost of the shirts and take order sizes via my e-mail. Much like the bikes that we took care of I will post the total cost of the shirts. I need to order 144 the first time around.

We will need to figure out a distribution system.

I will update on shirt brand and quality. KOP Distributors has not let Letterwinners down before and I am sure he will satisfy our discriminating tastes for quality.

  80. A-House December 26, 2011 12:20 pm

GAs coming with Coach Chow – do they have to be accepted into a “grad” program at UH before they can be a GA?

    Aloha Tsaikos!

  88. madeinhawaii December 26, 2011 12:55 pm

    Don Weir…

For local islands and US mainland distribution, add $5.50 for priority mail costs (those priority cardboard envelopes free at post office) – ($5.10 + tape and printing costs). You can print your own postage (priority only) on line using the USPS/Click2ship services simply by registering at USPS.com — parcel post would require taking it to the post office. You get a small discount on postage fees using the online service which will probably cover 1/3 of the credit card fees is you are collecting payments online.

  89. madeinhawaii December 26, 2011 12:57 pm

AND, you can arrange to have your mail handler pick up the packages instead of you having to go to the post office and stand in line. Or, you can simply drop them down the postal chute since they will already have postage on them.

  90. AC Garner December 26, 2011 1:12 pm

  91. jkjones December 26, 2011 1:31 pm

naturally, this source is strickly rumorsville on footballscoop and by their own definition remains unconfirmed.

BTW, the unconfirmed source did say the two would be retained as coaches, not GAs. big difference. im hoping the rumors are just that.

  92. Tamara Greaver December 26, 2011 1:31 pm

Regards for this post, I am glad I noticed this website on yahoo.

  93. Loretta Nehmer December 26, 2011 1:36 pm

You actually make it appear really easy together with your presentation but I find this matter to be really one thing that I believe I would never understand. It sort of feels too complex and extremely wide for me. I’m taking a look forward to your next put up, I‘¦ll attempt to get the dangle of it!

  94. Da Punchbowl Kid December 26, 2011 1:37 pm

    Happy Birthday Christmas Babies!

  95. Pride. December 26, 2011 1:55 pm

#91 – Why are you hoping that they are rumors? Just curious.

  96. Pride. December 26, 2011 2:04 pm

We’ll be seeing a lot more of Chris Tormey in the coming years. He was just named the DC for the Wyoming Cowboys.

  97. bleedgreen December 26, 2011 2:07 pm

Naming Norm Chow Hawaii’s new coach did not stop DE prospect Koloniasi Leota from committing to the Utes on Dec. 21, in spite of the fact his wife works in Hawaii. This was a big lost opportunity for the Warriors. Well, I guess he at least gave Hawaii a second thought before committing.

  98. Guy in the office December 26, 2011 2:09 pm

IF, there is any truth to the Rauscher hire, it won’t likely be as a GA because he did two tours as a GA at UCLA, the a season at Dixie as the OC in 2010, then, apparently went back in some capacity to work under Chow at Utah. Must be a limit as to how many seasons you can serve as a GA unless there’s an exception if it’s at a different school. Anyway, too early to tell. Seto would have been a good hire but as someone mentioned … maybe not because of his loyalty to Carroll. Interesting to see how this all unfolds.

  99. LC December 26, 2011 2:11 pm

Some reporter in Las Cruces is suggesting that New Mexico State look at Rolovich as a possible replacement for Doug Martin who went to Boston College.

I think oline coach will be one of Chow’s most important hire. Will it be Tim?

  102. Billie Staelens December 26, 2011 3:00 pm

Your post has confirmed useful to me. It’s quite educational and you are clearly really well-informed in this area. You have opened my eyes to different views on this subject with interesting and reliable content.

ya think…that the high priority for coach chow is a couple of tight ends who could compete right away?

and all of a sudden we don’t have enough running backs.

will one of our current qb’s be able to step up to the front?

  111. ai-eee-soos December 26, 2011 3:20 pm

YES, I also think o-line coach will be one of Chow’s most important hire.

I was hoping he would bring Ute o-line coach, whom he had at ucla – probaly have good working relationship and understanding of his offense.

Also, on the Utes blogs, their Safety coach and their DB coach might be interested.

But I also read on their blog that Norm Chow will NOT hire away a Ute FULL time coach.

Hence, the speculation on the two GA’s being hired. I think PIAA-Doris also posted this last week.

    PIAA-Doris — any updates?

In the meantime, we’ll have to wait for the lil birdies to re-surface.

I think Rolo should go spread his wings – he’s a young coach that needs to work and learn under different coaches. Build his resume’.

As for NewMexState – ask for top $$$ – nothing to lose; he will have a good QB to work with.

As for family considerations, his kid(s) are young, so moving around is no problem.

Rolo – go build your RESUME’.

    Congratulations Drew Brees!

Watching the “Holy Trinity” of QB’s this year (Brady, Rodgers and Brees) seems to emphatically make the case that no matter how much we love our Warrior QB’s, there really is a whole ‘nother level that needs to be reached here.

(CB needs to look to the future already.)

Maybe the Chow Dynasty will bring about that change.

  141. Derek December 26, 2011 8:05 pm

Drew Brees is generously listed at 6 ft. tall, and 207 lbs. There’s hope for Kellen Moore. Moore throws more like Ken Stabler who wasn’t a bad dude himself. The “Snake” is one of my favorites. Brees has a cannon of an arm, like a heat seeking missle. And that Jimmy Graham is a beast. Overall, I think the Saints are a better team than the Packers. Their running backs are better than the Packers.

  148. Jason December 26, 2011 9:22 pm

I remember I read an article in The Sporting News, it was the 2001 NFL Draft preview. In the article, the author wrote about how they were measuring Brees’ height, and when they shouted out 5 ft, 11 and whatever fraction inches, he begged to get remeasured. Brees stood up as tall and straight as he could, they measured him, and yelled out 6 ft, 0 in.

I remember reading that and thinking, “Who cares, he’s the best QB prospect in the draft not named Michael Vick.” I’ve been a fan of his since his Purdue days, so I was happy to see him break the record today. That said, I hope the 49ers win and/or the Saints lose on Sunday, so the 49ers get the 2 seed. πŸ™‚

P.S. Wow, look at the QBs that were drafted in 2001. Talk about one of the weakest QB classes ever.

Round 1, pick 1: Michael Vick

Round 2, pick 32: Drew Brees

Round 2, pick 53: Quincy Carter

Round 2, pick 59: Marques Tuiasosopo

Round 4, pick 106: Chris Weinke

Round 4, pick 109: Sage Rosenfels

Round 4, pick 125: Jesse Palmer

Round 5, pick 149: Mike McMahon

    Round 5, pick 155: A.J. Feeley

Round 6, pick 172: Josh Booty

Round 6, pick 177: Josh Heupel
