Special op

It was once noted that every church choir has a great singer, but that doesn’t make that person an American Idol.

There are a lot of bright-minded coaches in the football profession. But to paraphrase a former coach: The thing he missed when he became a head coach was coaching.

While the wish list of candidates for the UH vacancy is long and respected — although it is heavily tilted to offensive coaches, perhaps a reflection on the play-calling? — there is more to being a head coach than coaching.

Administrative skills are just as important as X-and-O philosophies. Perhaps these questions should be included in the interviews:

> Here’s the budget for assistant coaches. Whom can you get for that amount with only one-year guarantees?

> Because you’re not allowed to over-offer on signing day, do you offer a JC recruit a scholarship even if he needs to earn 21 credits by the start of training camp in August? Dilemma: If you don’t sign him and he qualifies, he’ll go elsewhere. If you do sign him and he doesn’t qualify, you miss out on another recruit.

> You have a Gatorade budget. How many bottles do you order for the year? And how many and when do you distribute them? Restriction: There’s not enough money for Gatorade for every player at every practice for the season.

> There is a road game in high altitude starting at 1 p.m. and one on the East Coast beginning at 8 p.m. When are the wake-up calls and what time are the meals?

> There are 45 players on the inactive roster with no game responsibilities. They can’t stand in the sideline rectangle because of space restrictions. Where should those players be during home games?

> There’s a 1 p.m. game in a Midwest city that only has a small commuter airport. Your team just played a home game on Saturday, and the players are required a mandatory off day on Sunday. You’re limited to 20 hours of practices and meetings. What’s the week’s practice and travel schedule? Restrictions: No charters and the airport is not one of Hawaiian Airlines’ stops. Bonus question: What time is Saturday’s wake-up call and what time are the meals?

All of which means the next UH head coach needs a dependable director of operations with mainland and football ties, an understanding in planning well-balanced meals, hotel/airline connections, and a family that does not mind not seeing him/her for eight months.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

    Nice opening ST.

I remember when coach chow was selected and after a few days marveled at the “non-coaching” duties he was responsible for. i.e. fertilizer etc… fast forward and coach naeole made a similar comment about being overwhelmed by “administrative duties” and now your opening for today.
Very insightful. If a coach who does wonders coaching can no longer be as active coaching, seems a waste of his talents. Got to find a good administrator instead OR instead the HC should look for a great administrative assistant.
Some what of an eye opening experience for coaches who have never been head coach.
    Anyhoo, IMUA WARRIORS!

  10. rage777 November 9, 2015 9:55 am

I would put those 45 players in the stands, lots of room there. 🙂

  11. Stephen Tsai November 9, 2015 9:57 am

There was a lot of hard work and fortunate circumstance that went into Paul Harris becoming a Warrior. But if they didn’t sign him in February, they wouldn’t have gotten him. But they also risked wasting a scholarship offer if he didn’t qualify.
People make some great suggestions about recruiting possibilities. Unfortunately in many cases, UH doesn’t have the moolah. Let’s say a guy leaves North Carolina. UH just can’t hop over to North Carolina. It needs its mileage or a buddy pass to even make it to Northern California. So, basically John Stud receives this FB message: Do you accept a friend request from June Ivin Rolovich?

  12. Hoosier November 9, 2015 9:59 am

$75???? Good luck with those kind of salaries

  13. Stephen Tsai November 9, 2015 9:59 am

    Rage777:
They’ve been in the stands, but people say that’s disrespectful for their hard work and contributions on scout team all week. I don’t know what the answer is.

  14. Stephen Tsai November 9, 2015 10:01 am

The trouble with incentives (and bonuses) is you have to set aside money in case the incentives are met.
But like most of us, if you get $1,000 and are told you have to set aside $2,500 for taxes, I’m sure by the end of the year, the $1,000 is gone and there’s an IOU note in the reserve money envelope.
C’mon, that just can’t be me, right?

  15. FearGod November 9, 2015 10:04 am

    incentives=boosters and fundraisers

  16. NorthShoreFan November 9, 2015 10:07 am

imho, take couple three rows out and carve out a Scout Warrior section, make the box bigger but not part of the field.
problem, going need plenty hack saw blades…..

  17. Warrior Dave November 9, 2015 10:18 am

    ST,

I’m confused regarding over offering. So if Tua Tagovailoa has interest from Power 5 schools, UH will not extend an offer if they feel he’s going there?

Guess that’s why we hear of so many Hawaii didn’t talk to me or offer a scholarship. Stupid rule which makes UH coaches seem clueless of football talent.

  18. Shoko November 9, 2015 10:21 am

Guess it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the next head coach to keep Brad Jones considering how many miles the Warriors had to travel these past four years.

  19. Annoddah Dave November 9, 2015 10:25 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
@16 North Shore Fan, I am with you on that idea! It should be well marked with signage and mentioned on the PA so that fans can show their appreciation for those who contribute but are rarely recognized. Let it be right behind the Warrior bench. May want to include family members as well that will add to the pride of being part of the Warrior Ohana.

  20. Balko November 9, 2015 10:25 am

For the degenerate gamblers out there, a few things to ponder about the up-coming games gambling lines:

    1. Since pride, loyalty and three dollars will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks, you have to wonder how many players are going to half step through the remaining games to avoid life changing injuries? You can always rehabilitate your reputation later.
    2. With all of the coaches likely to be dispersed to the wind at the end of the season, how many will be focusing on their job search to the detriment of game planning?

  21. NorthShoreFan November 9, 2015 10:46 am

#20, These last three games will show the drive and character of the players. Who’s gonna step up then the chips are down and who gonna dog it. If you looking to make an impression for next year, whether it be with the Warriors or else where, you better show up.
If you job searching, you better improve your work product now. What you gonna put on your app. I was busy looking for a job and forgot to pay attention.
Nah, lots of incentive to produce in these three games.

  22. NorthShoreFan November 9, 2015 10:49 am

Great time for eh coaches to show what they can do … unrestricted….hopefully

  23. Come on, man! November 9, 2015 10:49 am

other kind of recovery drink in Gatorade bottle
the H20 kine and the other kine

  25. Maddog50 November 9, 2015 10:59 am

I think Stephen was making a point and yes there are budgets for everything. I also think there is a subliminal message. Such as strong consideration for someone who’s done it before and done it here. Okay I’ll wait for the rebuttal

  26. Balko November 9, 2015 11:08 am

UH has to count Gatorade bottles while the growing trend going forward is guaranteed four year tuition for college athletes upon matriculation. Recruiting will get tougher in the long term.

  27. Maddog50 November 9, 2015 11:38 am

So 2-8 with three to go…….what are you watching? Essentially 1 Sr on offense this past week and 4 on defense. 6 starters on offense are fr and so. 5 on defense at 3 and two. This does not include specialists. I think I have this right but could be slightly off. This team will lose about 20 seniors all of whom I do not believe are scholarshipped. So my hope is that for 3 games there is support for the program the seniors and returning players. 3 home games at the normal time and not a lot of other stuff going on. Think they can win two and maybe with a little luck all 3. So here is my hope for a good crowd after all it’s the “Valley Dogs” on Sat at home. So despite equal records both with 2 wins I sure hope the Warrior faithful turn out, something tells me the road dust will finally be off so it’s time for a win and some fun!!!! Go Warriors!!!!!!!

  28. papayalips November 9, 2015 11:43 am

Whats the news? Did June Jones officially apply?

  29. kanak November 9, 2015 11:43 am

ST: I know that your points listed where to stir discussion, but does the HC truly make these types of decision? I understand personnel decisions whether it be coach or player, but down to supply budget. I ask cause I truly do not know.

  30. turfwar November 9, 2015 11:55 am

This is my understanding Warrior Dave- You can offer as many as you think is necessary to fill the recruiting class but on signing day you cannot sign more than you have scholarships available. The total team limit is 85 and 25 max per recruiting class, so say you have 20 available with 65 returning on scholie next year. You might be offering 24-25 guys to get the 20 you need. But unlike the past you cannot award scholies to 25 guys to fill 20 in case 5 don’t make it. The NCAA now only recognizes 20 signed scholies. Now if people don’t qualify you may not find out till school is nearly in session next fall and while you can still sign someone late for a guy who didn’t qualify, finding a quality replacement at the time will be slim pickings and good luck finding a prospect as good as a Paul Harris.

  31. mctruck November 9, 2015 12:00 pm

I believe that knowing there’s no bowl game in the picture?, let those who want to play, play; those who don’t, don’t. Especially if you’re a senior and nobody knocking on your door from the CFL or NFL.

  32. letsgowarriors November 9, 2015 12:01 pm

i mean if the potential coach didnt know his duties included the items listed in tsai’s post, they probably should not be a candidate.

  33. Da Punchbowl Kid November 9, 2015 12:07 pm

On the L&L show last night, Pops Leahey was quite adamant and gave many excellent reasons why JJ needs to return to UH as their HC. Kanoa gave examples of many boxes that must be”checked” in order for any applicant to qualify for the position. Remarks from father and son sounded like a ringing endorsement for JJ.

Nate Ilaoa was the guest and while he directly endorsed Miano he also said that a combination of JJ and Miano is probably a good thing.

Last night’s show was one of the best I’ve ever seen. I hope we get to see more of Nate Ilaoa as either a sportscaster or as an assistant coach at UH.

  34. What??? November 9, 2015 12:11 pm

#32 agree, and not saying a person can’t catch on, yet a lot of names floating around have not been a head coach.

  35. Makai November 9, 2015 12:24 pm

I enjoyed watching Nate on the field and now enjoy hearing what he says on TV. Should be him, Lenord and Rich at the round table on inside access with Rob Demello hosting.

  36. Derek November 9, 2015 12:29 pm

How bout them Middies. Kudos to Kenny and Ivan. The combination in that flexbone with an effective passing game and triple option would be deadly and very hard to stop. It takes a lot of discipline and attention to good techniques to make it go, especially the trigger man. Keenan Reynolds, a 4 year starter is a master at it.

It would be hard to implement it here because most Hawaii high school teams and players are not playing that type of offense. Just my opinion.

  37. letsgowarriors November 9, 2015 12:31 pm

#34 i dont think HC experience is necessary. but you have know to going in what your duties are going to be. and then Matlin will have to decide if you can handle them and delegate them properly.

guys like Miano have run the Speed & Quickness camp. Joe Salave’a started his own foundation and also holds camps in Hawaii and Samoa. this doesnt automatically make them top candidates, but i think it at least shows they can handle run the administrative side of things, or at least be able to delegate them out.

  38. Old School Dave November 9, 2015 12:33 pm

Ivin Jasper would be a great hire, but I think he’s next in line when Kenny retires at Navy. They played an impressive game against Memphis.

People saying that AD Dave Matlin needs to make the hire and let him do his job. On the next sentence, they say that Matlin needs to hire this guy or that guy or else the fans won’t support the program. Interesting.

You can bring in Nick Saban to UH, but if your salary package for your assistants is only $1.1 million, you’re not going go get experienced and talented college level assistants. The beautiful weather and beaches won’t pay your rent and a $6 gallon of milk here.

  39. Ipu Man November 9, 2015 12:36 pm

A general does not run an army worrying
how many potatoes have to be ordered.
    He delegates authority.
So you need a good sergeant.
The one in Mash comes to mind.

  40. Jason November 9, 2015 12:36 pm

FearGod: Adrian Klemm has baggage, re: recruiting violations at UCLA. And he’s already making north of $700k. Jeff Ulbrich is now LB coach for the Atlanta Falcons, and before that he was making $500k with UCLA. And you have one too many assistants in the Miano lineup, you probably wouldn’t be able to have both Rolo and Chang. (Fun to speculate, though!)

Is Dan Hawkins ready to get back in the game?

  44. pokesquid November 9, 2015 12:42 pm

“You have a Gatorade budget. How many bottles do you order for the year? And how many and when do you distribute them? Restriction: There’s not enough money for Gatorade for every player at every practice for the season.”

First off, you don’t buy bottled Gatorade…You buy Gatorade in bulk in the powdered form…Then you recycle all the emply water bottles you can find (of course rinsing them out and taking off labels before using) and you fill those water bottles up with the powdered Gatorade mix…We do it all the time.

Hey, I know some of you might be saying that is Hobo action.

But, after seeing how they fed our athletes french fries and some kind of deep fried “something” for their post practice meal…I don’t think that anyone will grumble about “the vehicle” with which their Gatorade was supplied to them…I sure wouldn’t especially on a very hot and humid day when I was dying of thirst.

Tip: This is what one of my frugal uncle does before hurricane season starts…He saves about 3 cases of his empty bottle water containers and refills them right before a hurricane is about to hit us…He does this because of the outrageous prices the stores charge for water during this time…not mention, he doesn’t have to lug all the water back home from the store or deal with all the mass crowds of people who got freighten by the media saying they better stock up on bottled water….This saves him time, money and headaches.

Bottom line is when it comes down to it…money and time is saved and water is water when you need it…And so is Gatorade in any form served in any way.

BTW…nothing wrong with mixing the Gatorade in a Big juice cooler and letting the kids drink from that.

As for the other questions…ahhh, Forgetaboutit!…To hard, I quit.

  45. PIAA Doris November 9, 2015 12:55 pm

I love reading these posts. I am a faithful Tsaiko lurker 🙂

  46. Willie November 9, 2015 1:00 pm

Whoa, the most simplistic item listed was the Gatorade budget, very shocking. Big time schools probably can provide all the Gatorade a player wants. Not to mention an unlimited nutrition spread. Well that’s life, the haves and the have nots. At least we don’t hear anything more about not having soap in the showers?

  47. Old School Dave November 9, 2015 1:13 pm

I remember Larry Price’s story of Upper Campus complaining that UH players were not allowed to drink water out of one of the rubber hoses in the Lower Campus after practice. Players living off of Corned Flakes and mangoes picked from the yards around the Quarry.

Leahey & Leahey back on the air, again?

  48. H-Man November 9, 2015 1:16 pm

I trust Matlin will effectively manage the new coach selection. It will be the best selection based on the budgetary and other constraints. What concerns me is the Cost of Attendance. It’s too low. Hawaii needs to increase it to around $2000-$2500/year/student-athlete-scholarship in order to stay competitive in recruiting.

  53. Maddog50 November 9, 2015 1:50 pm

I am ready for a little fun after a long season to date. So Stephen could you get Ol Tom Masons ear? Tell him a nut job from Chicago is asking him to put in a 4-3 style package with KT at field side end and turn him loose on the QB and backfield. That means Razz, Peni, Ep and Zeno are the combos in the 2 and 3 with Benny in the middle JGW outside Gener outside and Gifford/Tavai on the boundary outside. Not for the enire game but a third and 5 or more with a change up,on first down.’ Then get Bailey and tell him run those wildcat plays and a couple of reverses with a little more regularity. If you can do that for me I would appreciate it! Imagine KT coming off the edge -of course he would have to be schooled in over committing but he would be a disruption for sure-what do we have to lose-‘not a thing. Go Warriors

  54. pokesquid November 9, 2015 1:53 pm

aloha everyone !! like i said before if there was a tax on every dollar like the rail tax on every island that would go to the UH coach sport & stadium fund !! we would been out of the red and be able to get great coaches !! or at lest be able to keep the good ones !! and be able to fix or build a UH stadium !! and be able get rid of coaches !! and make it where everyone pays !! not only a local tax on every dollar spent in the state of hawaii

  62. Balko November 9, 2015 4:07 pm

If you want to swiftly and effectively eradicate all of the state’s revenue woes: legalize gambling and pakalolo. Tie those funds to education with a percentage to AD and all will be well.

Unfortunately, the legislature is stubbornly refusing either of these deep and abiding revenue streams.

Does anyone know how much revenue the H-Zone has made for the athletic department?

Taking over the sports merchandise and giving the revenue to the athletic department was probably the only smart thing that Ben Jay decided to do…even though the UH book store still is allowed to sell some athletic merchandise which doesn’t go to the athletics department…Go figure.

Still, BJ stated that he projected revenues from the H-Zone was going to be about $500,000 per year from the sale of sports merchandise….Are they meeting or exceeding that goal?…Any one with information on that?

Regarding H zone spoke with Felix Calvo who is the manager of H Zone. Asked him how business was and he said really good as did a few other folks working the concession at LV. I myself have purchased over 2K gross this year alone. Some for myself and family some for an event I run. The new items are flying out the door according to these sources. It is all relative but I would guess it’s moving along well. The bookstore only ponies up trademark royalties which is chump change a lot of merchandise does not carry the H logo.

  73. Kamuelafan November 9, 2015 6:08 pm

Yes cocobean, Kudos to Coach Coolen. Also to men’s volleyball coaches Charlie Wade and Milan Zarkovic who last spring brought their own equipment from home and spent many, many hours of their own time pressure washing years of grime from the walkways and stairs around the Stan Sheriff Center. That was followed by the team and MVB boosters showing up one weekend to pull weeds and clean the land scape areas and spread gravel. Coach Chow and players painted the locker room. All these efforts were voluntary and show the pride the coaches and athletes take in their university and programs and not waiting for someone else. I’m sure their are other examples not mentioned here.

  74. pokesquid November 9, 2015 6:11 pm

    Thanks for the information.

I would have never thought that during this down time with FB that the merchandise revenue would reach $1.24 million…Still have 7 more months in the fiscal year to go.

Uniforms that Chow instituted were the ugliest uniforms I have ever seen on a Football team! I mean drab faded green, imua, no name, what the hell was he thinking!! Brink back the mean look that the black, silver and green had!! And put names back on. Thank god he is gone. The most rigid, stubborn and arrogant coach much like Von Appen! WHEW!!!

  83. Frannyk November 9, 2015 8:08 pm

Since we’re getting a new coach, can we please also get a NEW announcer???

Kekaula is TERRIBLE!!!! Can’t he speak like any other normal person instead of f-i-r-s-t and t-e-n on FFFF-IIII-VVVV-EEEE! I would turn the sound off if not for Rich Miano’s insightful commentary.

Just put Kanoa, Howard or my choice Bobby Curran on as play by play already!

  84. cocobean November 9, 2015 9:02 pm

#70. Z I’ve been on a soap box saying Woolsey should run more. He’s a reluctant runner, it’s not in his DNA. When extended plays he’s programed to keep his eyes down field looking for open receivers. Coming out of high school he was described by recruiting services as a pro style QB. Running is his last option. Too often he reaches that option too late where any openings have been closed.

I think he could be effective if there were plays for him to run. We’ve been lining up in a pistol look a lot lately. The coaches should steal some of Ault’s
qb running plays. In the last game the team was faced with 4 and 1. We came out in a power formation UNLV stacked the box leaning towards the H back side. It seemed to me if we kept the blocking assignments the same Ikaika could’ve faked the handoff and ran around the other end for way more than a yard.

Ahhhh you got me all excited. Hahaha!

  88. pokesquid November 9, 2015 10:18 pm

    83…

I agree too…he should run more…but he seems to not want to take off and run when nothing is open…Plus from what I seen when he did run, he doesn’t seem to be that fast or shifty.

But hey, all he needs to do is keep the chains moving if he can with his legs…Thats all he needs to do…When a QB is reluctant to run it usually means two things…one the coaches don’t want him to run or the QB is too scared of getting hit…There are QBs that are afraid to take off and run.

I still can remember when Moniz took off and ran…he had some good runs.

  89. pokesquid November 9, 2015 10:24 pm

    81…

I hope Coach Naeole brings back the ALL BLACK Uniforms for the 2 remaining conf Home games….and then the ALL WHITE Uniforms with the silver helmets for the last game vs UL Monroe.

  90. pokesquid November 9, 2015 10:33 pm

    82…

I guess to each his own…cause I kinda like Kekaula’s commentary with all the local slangs he uses…sometimes makes me crack up…As for Miano, I don’t know maybe its his tone or something but I agree with some here that his commentary is very nauseating to listen too.

I am still laughing at Kekaula’s call on Harris long run which he got stopped I think at the 5 yard line and didn’t score….Robert all excited in his voice goes “Harris breaks it outside..to the 40..to the 30..to the 20..the 10 and he couuuld scc…get caught.”…LOL!

  91. 3-Prong November 9, 2015 10:56 pm

As mentioned earlier “Buzz” Preston will apply. Georgia Tech WR Coach.

  92. z November 9, 2015 11:21 pm

I know Woolsey hesitates. Coaching could change that. If they are going to use that one back offense he needs to run. It’s all about want to. He doesn’t have to be a force just an option. But it is not just Woolsey. Our runningbacks need to hit the hole with more pop. I was really impressed with runningbacks the past couple of games but they were on the other side of the los. I think our OC have also said that he would like to see them run harder.

  93. z November 9, 2015 11:26 pm

    89. Guys used to complain about papa Leahy getting the numbers wrong but Robert and whoever is with him does it too. Sometimes they get the number right but the names wrong. If they did their homework they should know who is on the field making plays.

  94. 3-Prong November 9, 2015 11:35 pm

…As a former Rainbow he bleeds green, has Aloha for the program and for the people of Hawaii, and the kicker, he married a local girl and wants to come home.

  95. kahuna November 10, 2015 4:42 am

Guys…..guys……there is a legit reason Ikaika doesn’t run more. The reason is to stay healthy. If the starting QB get the majoirty of the reps on game week and he gets hurt…..the backup will be at a disadvantage cause he will not get the necessary reps. UH is allowed only 20 hours per week of practices so the smart thing is always to be smart and stay healthy to be in position to help the team win at the end of the game.

Ikaika also do not practice getting hit like other positions players so he cannot be absorbing too many. blows in games. Running QBs gets hit during practice to get them game ready and help them with ball security,

I don’t think its just a Chowder thing. Nowadays coaches want their QB to win game throwing the hallo and dread their QBs getting hit.

  96. kahuna November 10, 2015 4:45 am

    Hallo->ball

  97. cappie the dog November 10, 2015 4:47 am

Are you talking about Dino Babers?

I think Kirk Hammett of Metallica married a girl from Oahu.

James Mercer of The Shins married a girl from Oahu.

  98. 3-Prong November 10, 2015 5:15 am

cappie the dog: no, I was still taking about “Buzz” Preston.

  99. Casual Observer November 10, 2015 6:34 am

Marcus Mariota was not sacked once their victory over the Saints. There obviously was increased pressure on the line to keep Mariota upright, to which they responded, but Mariota also helped himself out by making quicker decisions and getting the ball out earlier. When watching UNLV’s Decker two long TD tosses, it seems he made his decision and released the ball quickly. Of course everything looks better when the receivers catches the ball but making quicker decisions also gives DBs less time to react and this is something UH need to do better.

    #9, Chad Ige?????
I think he’s too busy catering and making Andagi for the governor’s next bash

  101. Bigwave96744 November 10, 2015 6:40 am

Put the 45 guys on the field and lessen the number of field passes to boosters.
Most corporate big wigs don’t want to be on the field anyway. They rather be where they can see the game, ie the Brown section

  102. Bring back JJ now November 10, 2015 6:46 am

All the more reason to bring back June because he has handled all of that before and has won, winning seasons 7 out of 9 years, exciting offense, scores points and will get people excited about Hawaii football again….He has done it before, handled all the administrative duties and WON….no brainer

  103. Maddog50 November 10, 2015 6:48 am

H-Zone set up tables at California Hotel all week. They also were at pre-game rally that was attended by Aston least 1000 folks. I counted table and talked to staff about attendance

  109. RB November 10, 2015 8:10 am

I’m sorry but Robert Kekaula has to go. Please OC16 let him go. His commentary sucks, The people on the mainland watching the games must have a hard time trying to understand him. Please Robert just stick to KITV news. Find another host for Inside Access let Miano host the show.

  111. amela November 10, 2015 9:00 am

Agree that Kekaula isn’t that great and Miano talk’s like that because the local people need to be spoken to slowly so they can understand if he’s not going to use pigeon. .

  112. FearGod November 10, 2015 10:24 am

“local people need to be spoken to slowly so they can understand”
the delivery of the message is appreciated by the people because the tongue can rant on and on and on. When speaking slowly and clearly it comes from the heart not the ….

  113. cocobean November 10, 2015 10:43 am

kahuna. Every coach has concerns about his QB getting hurt. I’m not advocating we turn Ikaika into a running QB he’s clearly doesn’t have good running skills. What I am saying he’s one of the faster and stronger skilled players as evidenced by his finishes in sprint drills and his A+ grade given out by Coach Beamer. Given this I say why not have a play or two per game for him to run. All spread option and pistol teams have designed run plays for the QB. Even pro style offenses have QB draws or naked bootlegs. Plays that may come in handy in given situations. When was the last time you saw a called run for our QB. We have been hurt many times when a non running QB scrambled to convert a 3rd down. We haven’t done that as nearly as often as we could have.

  114. Dano November 10, 2015 10:55 am

kekaula would be better as the TV analyst, not play-by-play. better yet, he was best as a radio analyst with B. curran back in the day.

  115. Old School Dave November 10, 2015 11:13 am

Missed the old format of the coaches show in the past. Larry Price & Paul Guanzon (often funny to watch). Joe Moore hosting the Dick Tomey Show, followed by Les Keiter on Channel 2. I remember watching one episode segment that showed some UH players on their free time. This one player liked to jump off cliffs into the ocean on the East Side of Oahu, which greatly upset Tomey. Another time, Joe Moore mentioned to Tomey that the players in the huddle were second guessing play calling sent in. Tommy was not amused and was visibly POed on camera.
