Special changes

just before meeting with the Warrior football team yesterday morning, it was decided Dick Tomey needed to make a change. Out went his Nike shoes, replaced by school-sponsored UnderArmour shoes.

Tomey’s hiring as special teams coordinator also will lead to other changes, such as:

• While the Warriors will keep the “shield protection” for punts, there will be no directional kicks.

• Punter Alex Dunnachie will be used for kickoffs.

• The Warriors will be more aggressive in going f or blocks.

• More of the roster will be used on special teams. Alema Tachibana and Kamalani Alo should become kick-coverage stars.

Kealoha Pilares completed his rehabilitation for a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament suffered in the Hawaii Bowl, and now is training in Arizona. Pilares, running back Alex Green and receiver Greg Salas are preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine in a little more than a week.

Utah vs Oregon game is in extra innings and just starting the 9th inning with the score tied at 5-5.

Once this game is over there will be a 20-minute break and then the Rainbow Wahine will begin their game against Utah.

For now looks like a 10:00 or 10:15 HAWAII TIME start at the earliest.

  18. Kazz February 18, 2011 9:47 am

Utah’s Nielson is no Danielle Lawrie or a Kenzie Fowler…

We’ll soon find out if she can pitch 10+ innings and handle the game vs the Wahine.

How far into our game with Utah she goes probably won’t be for more than 3 or 4 innings.

If the special teams changes were initiated by tomey and accepted by Coach Mack – it is indeed a new and special beginning for Warrior ball – only a few hours into the job and “major” changes in special teams.

Pomai #21 – by “place kicking” do you refer to kicking off a tee? wonder if Dunnachie will kick soccer style or stright on? surely different muscles are used.

  28. OC Warrior February 18, 2011 10:09 am

I am so glad to hear the directional kicks are gone! Especially in punting, I never understood why you take a raw, young talent like Dunnachie and then instead of having him just focus on hang time you make him try directional kicks before he really has the fundamentals down. Plus he is supposed to have this booming leg and difficult to catch spin on the ball and you never really get to see that. I hope this cuts down the the 10-15 yard shanked punts.

  29. al February 18, 2011 10:11 am

we have an excellent kicker in tyler hadden waiting in the wings. he’ll step in and compete with walk on kyle niiro/kaiser hs. while hadden was the 8th rated hs kicker the year before he redshirted, niiro is no slouch either as he possesses an acurate and long leg.

ahouse…while i may appear to look dumb, i do maintain some level of intelligence as a former invitee to mensa international.

  31. Stephen Tsai February 18, 2011 10:18 am

When UH uses the shield protection, as lots of teams do now, you sacrifice some downfield coverage, in theory. And that’s a problem when a punter out-kicks the coverage. But UH believes Tomey can come up with a way of both protecting Dunnachie while getting enough people to cover the punt returner.

  32. Stephen Tsai February 18, 2011 10:20 am

People keep telling me that Kamalani Alo is going to be the next Kenny Estes, who is a very good kick-cover guy. And don’t forget, UH is a year away from getting Mike Wadsworth back.

  33. Pauoa Boy February 18, 2011 10:23 am

Dunnachie get em, just blast the ball into the endzone den no need worry about kick or punt returns. Tyler Hadden get um too, you going see the second coming of Jason Elam…watch! John Hardy-Tuliau going show why he led the nation in high school for blocked kicks, he just gets off the line so quick.

  65. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 11:24 am

Thanx ST for the blurb on STs–like I mentioned yesterday, Tomey will have his hand on the wheel with our STs. Why else would MAC bring him, his STs has performed pathetically over the last three years? Warrior STs have often times looked confused or in wrong formations or just caught dumfounded or ill-prepared. REM the missed-2-point attempt against NEV?
Coach Tomey is just too well-prepared and organized to tolerate those kind of mental mistakes.
Directional punts/kicks can be used in many situations but not with a rookie punter out of the southern hemisphere who is accustomed to watching water drain counter-clockwise.
It took away his natural mehanics and knee snap. Alex needed to cut his teeth before asking him to do placements punts, usually reserved for accomplished punters.
Although, for those that know, Tomey would rather have his kicker put the ball near the flag than in the endzone on a kickoff. It’s bc of Tomey’s eternal optimistic spirit that he believes the ball receiver wont reach the twenty yardline. That’s OK, when you have 11 players sprinting down the field like the 7th Cav.

Still, judging by MAC’s elation and choice of words (and the inside talk), this season should be fun. And if it means MAC flips the switch and delegates the green light for Tomey to do his thing–it will truly benefit our STs. Love it!

I’d like to see Tomey start to recruit this one certain DE from Punahou who’s about 6’7″ who is probably the #1 prospect for 2012. Everybody knows who he is. I saw this kid when he was a sophomore and he was 6’6″ then. When I saw him play against Mililani then, I said, whoa, this guy looks like he has a huge upside with proper coaching, technique, and growth.
He’s very athletic too. Plays basketball also. Hard to get kids from Punahou to sign with UH because most of them go away, but we got Ostrowski didn’t we? So maybe get chance.
Coaches just need to start early and often and show the love that we want them to play for the home team and the blue print to get to the next level, the promised land.

The Punahou kids look at UH as a 2nd class academic college. Being a high standard private high school, they look for high standard colleges like Stanford, etc. The UH should put Tomey on these recruits. He can tout being the winningest coach in Arizona Wildcats history. He can tout being the winningest coach at UH till June Jones came along. He can tout being in the NFL. His ability to teach and coach is legend. He can help these Punahou recruits go to the next level in the NFL. As to the academics, he can tell them staying home can promise them a good job, etc junior executive at Bank of Hawaii, junior executive at the new disneyland. Executive producer with Hawaii Five-0. I know, these are cockamayney ideas but if you can find out what the kid really loves as a avocation besides football, aim to court him in that area. The Joey Meyers, Caymen Shutter, Miah Ostrowski’s are far and few between. Dick Tomey, Bob Wagner, Bob Nash, Jim Donovan, Jack Lord saw something here they really loved and made them want to stay here, maybe they can impart that special something to lure the athletes.

In the last grading period, UH scored a higher APR than Colorado. UH did not lose any scholarships due to the APR, while Colorado lost a bunch. So, with just this one example, how can academic excellence be the reason behind our guys going to Colorado instead of playing for the Home Team?

  110. 808ike February 18, 2011 12:26 pm

Majam BB. First and second 1out.

  111. Souljah February 18, 2011 12:27 pm

Keep the best local prospects home Tomey!!! please!

  112. A-joe February 18, 2011 12:28 pm

It should be an easy technique to teach Dunnachie to “soccer style” kick off a Tee. With his leg strength he should kill the ball beyond the endzone. And honestly, if he flubbed a kick off, it’ll be a “Bullet” of a squib kick that would plug itself into a returner’s chest!

    I like the idea. =)

  113. RupertDaStupert February 18, 2011 12:28 pm

Thank you Liz. The Wahines will win their share. I’m more worried about Majam’s health. You can always win/lose a game and see another day. But Life, there is only one. I rather see her hit 201, hit 5 homeruns and live till 100 than hit 403, 32 homeruns and——————-no need to say more.

  114. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 12:31 pm

    Kazz….Kazz…you awake?

Na Wahine can remove all doubt about their legitimacy. These road games will define what kind of team they can be. Huge test.

Kind of reminds one of last years team huh? Only with a different cast of characters.

My eyes always tear at the passing of announcer and Major League Hall of Famer Harry Kalas several years ago. I have never heard a better announcing voice-EVEr!!! Smooth baritone. He caressed each word like the stroke of Picasso’s talented brush. I remember the Hawaii Islanders had a shortstop named Rack Slider. Next at bat is Ricketty RACK!! Carlos Bernier hits a long drive to deep left field, it’s going, it’s going, and it’s A L O H A!!!!!!Greatest voice I ever heard!!!! Rest in peace Harry K.

  138. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 12:51 pm

#105, I wouldnt put it all on Punahou. Recall a certain athlete at SLHS whose mom said she wanted her son to attend a school with quality education so he selected CAL and later wanted to transfer home. Look, every year, local athletes go away–too many, in fact, to lay it all on Punahou. Many, myself included, are just glad to see the ones who chose to stay and play for the hometeam, succeed. Their cant be a better example than Miah Ostrowski. That shouldnt be overlooked!

  139. Kazz_DROID.X February 18, 2011 12:52 pm

Damn gametracker acting funky. My phone kept it alive tho.

When the NFCA watch list came out and only Majam’s name was on it, it was BS that Iwata was left off.

Kudos to Aguirre for closing the deal.

Aguirre should be expected to develop into one of this team’s leaders.

  140. midori7 February 18, 2011 12:52 pm

WOW, way to go Wahine!!! What a comeback!

    Thanks for the updates guys!

Final score similar to last season against Utah in the same tournament. Was 9-8 with us having to hold off a late rally by the Lady Utes.

  171. Lanaiboy February 18, 2011 1:49 pm

Oops. Two errors by right fielder Jasey Jensen. Replaced by Rodriquez, fielding, and Kaile Nakao for hitting (DH). Klieberstein homered to give Wahine a one-run lead.

  172. Just sayin. February 18, 2011 1:50 pm

I don’t think anyone will forget the seniors that helpd take UH to the world series anytime soon.

  173. koakane™ February 18, 2011 1:51 pm

  174. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 1:53 pm

Sharla a pull-hitter is making coach coolen look good by moving her to the power spot, #5.
everytime these replacements do something well it bodes well for our season. in the last game, jenna, shifted to the #8 spot started the winning rally. so far, coach is waiving a magic wand.

  175. Lanaiboy February 18, 2011 1:53 pm

Coach Cooley talked about using Stephanie Ricketts as a DH; she is supposed to be really smashing the ball in practice. Maybe she should be given the chance now to give a little more punch at the end of the line up.

  176. Kazz February 18, 2011 1:54 pm

    Everyone wants a piece…

  177. Derek February 18, 2011 1:55 pm

Ted Hendricks, former Raider was a 6’9″ defensive end. Great All-Pro. Defensive tackles don’t need to be much more than 6’4″ or 6″5. These guys in the middle of the line need leverage and if you’re shorter they have some advantages. Probably 6’1″ is o.k. but 6’3″ to 6″4 is probably ideal. Taller defensive ends who can run and swat passes are worth in gold.

Al, I hope by January when Alo comes in for next spring he will be at least 6’3″ and 200 lbs.
He was listed at 6’2″ 180 lbs. With these kids, growth spurts can happen suddenly. Look at what happened to Aaron Rodges, he was 5’10” and 165 lbs in high school. No 4 year college offer. In one year, at Butte CC, he gained 4 inches to 6’2″ and 50 lbs. to 215 lbs. Then, Jeff Tedford gave him a scholarship to Cal. And the rest is history.

About 2 weeks ago, I predicted on the post that Alex Aquirre will have a monster year. It looks like she’s turning heads and on her way. She is without a doubt the most athletic player on the Wahine team. Great speed, great fielding and great arm and she’s finding herself at the plate. Last years World Series at bat against UCLA in which she had a 17 pitch at bat where she fouled so many pitches that the UCLA ace could not get her out. And Alex ended it by hitting a home run. That is arguably the great at bat in UH history.
Once Aguirre’s light bulb goes on when she figures it out at the plate, she will terrorize opposing pitchers. Looks like the found it in the first game with 2 home runs. And the best thing is that she’s just a junior. WoW! She’s All-American potential.

  178. al February 18, 2011 1:57 pm

amazingly…we’ll only lose j-rod and gonzo from the starting lineup.

  179. Kazz February 18, 2011 1:58 pm

Maybe J-Rod is this year’s Taualii with regards to adding production to the bottom of the order.

Taualii was only one of the two players to be hitting over .300 in 2009, slumped a bit to start 2010, moved to 6th then to 8th and so forth and it ignited 6-9 collectively.

J-Rod was a consistent contact hitter last year and performed well on road games, started out last weekend slow and now moves to 8 and voila.

    We shall see.

  180. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 1:59 pm

175, stephanie can hit, so can HER BABY SIS. She hit one out of the park last year in the rain in a rare plate appearance. like I said, if we can get someone in the lower part of the order to bang like amanda–we are goin to be nasty.

  181. Kazz February 18, 2011 2:00 pm

    Al,

    “Only” Gonzalez and Rodriguez?

I’m not downplaying what Majam, Iwata, Aguirre bring, but “only” Gonzalez and Rodriguez?

  182. al February 18, 2011 2:00 pm

    #176…of what?

  183. al February 18, 2011 2:00 pm

and alex has a great…ummm. face.

  184. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 2:02 pm

if kaia can develop her change-up she will be more effective. everything else is there. she can get predictable and in the late innings batters start to guess correctly.

  185. Guy in the office February 18, 2011 2:05 pm

I think Aguirre “figured it out at the plate” last season — she batted over .300 with double-digit home runs. She’s a talent, both offensively and defensively.

  186. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 2:07 pm

losing one player can disturb the chemistry, but thAT COMES WITH THE COLLEGIATE TERRITORY. Coach Bob knows that he lost four and is mixing it up to regain the kick he had at seasons end. i know he has settled on Sharla but his DP, 1B, 2B and RF is still up for grabs. one thing for sure, he is giving most a close look.

  187. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 2:11 pm

the tempo of this desert classic thus far is diff than our initial homestand and should make our team better. wahine have to play powerball in this series as our pitchers are being hit fairly well. adapt, adjust and win….that makes a great team.

  188. Ralph February 18, 2011 2:16 pm

Easton sales rep must be smiling…7 homers in 10 innings of play.

Alex Aguirre with another homer. 7 to 4.

    “Rockstar 101” 😎

  193. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 2:18 pm

179, i hear u kazz, perhaps….although, i believe coolen’s reason for the move was to place experience betw the replacements, to keep it fluid. again, amanda was a power-hitter in addition to the other 5. we still are missing that 6th batter that can go deep. if sharla keeps pounding, than yes, i would agree.

  194. LizKauai m/ February 18, 2011 2:22 pm

They are beaming our girls now… Kliebenstein and Robinson make it bases loaded with Robinson up to bat.

    9-4 Wahine

  204. Bowwar February 18, 2011 2:28 pm

Did anyone consider using Kenny Estes for kick-offs? In high school, the kid was an excellent place-kicker and kick-off person…I agree with someone earlier who mentioned that we don’t want to mess Dannachie too much, especially since he’s still learning the American sport and technique.

  205. al February 18, 2011 2:29 pm

kazz…i know what jrod and gonzo brings to the plate and this team. i mean this in a good way of how next year we’ll be just as tough with all these returnees who can ball.

    whoa boy. easy now.

  206. LizKauai m/ February 18, 2011 2:29 pm

Despite the errors on CBS gametracker at least it has moving icons.

Live stats off UH’s site are fine and smooth, but maybe I have live stat A.D.D. or something.

  209. Lanaiboy February 18, 2011 2:33 pm

LBS giving the game away by hitting batters with pitches, walks, and wild pitches. Good. Score any ways we can. Parnaby hasn’t been that sharp today.

  210. Kazz February 18, 2011 2:35 pm

    Al,

    No tell me to behave.

I have to “behave” at the home games this season and all seasons going forward. That is hard enough. Expect a Skittles-related fatality soon. I bit my tongue hard twice last weekend trying to keep my mouth shut after bad calls.

  211. al February 18, 2011 2:37 pm

kazz…i get plenny extra duct tape fo you. you like?

  212. al February 18, 2011 2:37 pm

    lizk…you mean “beaning”?

  213. Kazz February 18, 2011 2:37 pm

Yes. Today is not a great day for our dual aces. But it is ONE day and the first road game of the season.

I’d still favor them over any other pitchers in WAC.

  214. Kazz February 18, 2011 2:39 pm

    Al,

You know, I have an old violin in the closet. I used to take lessons a long time ago.

I thought about bringing it to the games as a prop to use when the opposing coaches complaing to the umps about something.

It would have been funny I think…

  215. al February 18, 2011 2:47 pm

    bring em.

  218. Da Punchbowl Kid February 18, 2011 2:50 pm

    Kazz-

It would be worth the price of admission. 😉

  219. BG February 18, 2011 2:51 pm

I like the way Kaia’s hung tough with runners in scoring position. Would love to see Ricketts get some pinch-hit opportunities.

  220. BG February 18, 2011 2:54 pm

Hope someone got video of the 1st game’s 7th inning. That needs to go in the film vault. Probably second only to Jen-Rod’s historical launch.

  221. papajoe2 February 18, 2011 2:55 pm

#177 Derek, I believe Ted “the mad stork” Hendricks was 6’7” and played linebacker for Oakland, although there were other tall DEs like Ed “too tall” Jones (6’10”) of the Cowboys and Buck Bucanon (6’8/9″) of the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s why I like the 6″5″ UH recruit (Daley?) who was a linebacker but rumored to be moved to DE. His height size reminded me of Hendricks so I hope he’s good enough to stay at linebacker and they have enough quality DEs to kick butt. With him also blitzing, who knows what could happen with the opposing QBs either getting sacked or passes swatted or even intimidated to throw off target (avoiding the swat) into the hands of the UH defender.

  222. MCB February 18, 2011 2:56 pm

#220 – don’t forget jessica iwata’s grand slam against Alabama in game 2. or that come from behind homerun (yoshikawa) against Missouri in game 1 of CWS.

  223. Kazz February 18, 2011 2:56 pm

C’mon Kaia! Here ya go one six.

    Close it out! 😎

  224. papajoe2 February 18, 2011 2:58 pm

Kazz, the violin move would be a priceless moment. I could river dance but it wouldn’t fit the mood of crying.

  225. papajoe2 February 18, 2011 3:00 pm

#224 unless the Tsaikos and etts saw me river dance, maybe they would cry instead.

    Dun for kickoffs?

Don’t we have the kicker we red-shirted (while having to endure the one that just graduated) thats in scholarship?

I thought he was supposed to be “money” ?

  239. hawaiiansun February 18, 2011 3:35 pm

kelly may not be banging yard, but this wahine has so much heart and contributes in any way she can. last year she was strikin out more than walking until she pulled even towards the end of the season. this year she has KO’d, i believe twice, but has a KO:BB ratio better than 1:6. her slugging average is above .900 and on-base average is best on the team.
We may see a consummate hitter/player in majam this year, not necceasally the banger, but just as awesome when it comes to the bottomline….and, dont tell our opponents kelly cant bang, they pitch around her, even with two strikes and no balls.

  240. homey ℞ February 18, 2011 3:40 pm

A sign of respect is pitching around somebody when the count is 3 balls and no strikes.

#18 Stanford beats Utah St. 18-10 6 inn.
#18 Stanford losing to Portland St. 1-0 after 2 1/2 inn. Port. St. is home team.

For those interested, UH sb starts at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. UH is the visiting team the first game and home team the second game.

    Now to focus on BASEBALL!

  242. Lanaiboy February 18, 2011 3:48 pm

One of the primary rules for softball and baseball is that one is not suppose to allow the first batter on base with nobody out.Teams are breaking this rule by pitching around Majam and walking her. Majam states that she has to learn how to hit pitches on the outside of the plate; that’s where mosy of the pitches are being directed. How long can teams do this with Iwata and Aguirre smashing the ball out of the park as 2nd and third hitters? Well, it’s a good problem to have although it may affect Majam’s home run production this season.

  243. Kazz February 18, 2011 3:56 pm

I just appears to me that it’s a sign of DISRESPECT when opposing teams opt to pitch to Jessica Iwata, Gonzalez, etc…

But that’s fine… Iwata and Aguirre made them pay today.

    They paid dearly…

This would save the billions spent every year to create vaccines for whatever flu strains are expected that year. The UK government alone spent almost $2 bil/year to prepare for the swine flu outbreak, and between 250,000 and 500,000 people die from the flu in a typical year:

SMU did very well in football this season, their AD is capitalizing on the interest generated by June Jones, and they already kicked off their season tickets sales for next season with an April 1 deadline. Their booster club, the Mustang Club, raised their fees and it will cost more for season ticket surcharge.

UHAD needs more revenue so why not start an earlier drive to lock in season tickets, an earlier deadline from last season would give the UHAD a good bird’s eye view of the number of available seats that needs to be sold, packaged and promoted to put more butts in seats.

If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

[…] The exact date and origin of the kite is not known but it is believed that they were flown in China more than 2,000 years ago. The earliest written account’ of kite flying was in about 200 BC when the Chinese general Han Hsin of the Han dynasty flew a kite over the walls of a city he was attacking to measure how far his army would have to tunnel to reach past the defences. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  382. christian louboutin shoes March 2, 2011 11:58 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is the best weblog for anybody who wants to seek out out about this topic. You realize a lot its nearly onerous to argue with you (not that I really would need…HaHa). You definitely put a brand new spin on a topic thats been written about for years. Great stuff, just nice!
