Sounds like a plan

There was a coach addressing his team at halftime. The coach said the opposing team probably thought his team would make strategic changes in the second half, but he would counter by not making those moves. A player in the back of the locker room then said: “So our plan is not to do anything?”

I’m reminded of that every time UH is faced with a metaphorical halftime. Red tape, back-room politics and other assorted factors always appear to jam the process. It shouldn’t be that complicated. Even a 17-year kid has a plan if the first person he asks rejects a prom invitation.

The AD is a sharp guy. (He has an MBA.) He also is a 12-steps-ahead thinker with creative ideas. He wouldn’t oust a basketball coach without having either a successor in mind or knowing the qualities he envisions in a replacement. Let’s hope he is allowed the freedom to enact his plan.

* * * * *

There still are issues that Konawaena defensive lineman Mike Andrade must resolve before his commitment to UH is completed.

* * * * *

The San Mateo offensive lineman is expected to decide between UH and LSU by Tuesday.

* * * * *

Congrats to TE recruit Ethan Watanabe, who is now an Eagle Scout.

* * * * *

Interesting that Tate Forcier is now training with Jeff Garcia in San Diego in the hope of landing a CFL contract. Garcia also works with former UH quarterback Shane Austin and wide receiver Royce Pollard.

* * * * *

Bought the NBA League Pass. Six of the seven channels work. The one showing the Knicks game doesn’t. Sigh.

If he’s going to start at LSU, he should go to LSU.

If he’s not going to start there, UH is a good option. Not only would he be a key player at UH, but Hawaii offers many of the non-football things he is seeking.

SOFTBALL GAME/WEATHER UPDATE: Coach Bob Coolen and UH administration are in a meeting right now discussing today’s situation and possible outcomes. Will pass along whatever decision is made. Outfield remains a hazard as it has not had the chance to properly dry out. Many portions remain under water and rain is persistent on campus.

  23. madeinhawaii March 9, 2012 8:14 am

Is there a drier field somewhere that would suffice?

  24. HiloBilly March 9, 2012 8:16 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

This weather is a downer. Hoping it stops enough so the softball and baseball teams can get their games in. It would be a huge waste of money for the other teams to be here and not play. Sad part is with the rain, the teams pretty much have to stay inside the hotel.

From 2 to 6 moopuna, kinda fast it happened, I guess our kids are doing their part to add to the Hawaiian stream! Gotta invite all the Tsaikos to the luaus!

Hope Mike Andrade’s papers are all in order, nice looking young man….

  37. Kevin March 9, 2012 8:32 am

The longer we don’t play the more of a lull it is. I don’t care if you are #1 or #200, time off from competition sets you back and ultimately the less games you play, it is a set back come RPI time.

Granted these teams in this tourney wouldn’t have “boosted” our softball RPI, but games need to be played.

Pretty stressful times right now at the RWSS.

  38. jkjones March 9, 2012 8:37 am

that same mba AD also had a plan when he selected nash and takahara. sorry, many fans dont worship the emperor, they evaluate his result.

I would agree that JD has matured, but im not ready to annoit his selection before he has announced it.

  39. Stephen Tsai March 9, 2012 8:39 am

I think rainouts aren’t harmful to an unbeaten team. If you’re struggling, you need more games (and victories).

  40. Stephen Tsai March 9, 2012 8:40 am

    Current AD didn’t hire Nash.

  46. Kevin March 9, 2012 8:46 am

We got serious competition coming in next week and if we cannot get any games in, the team goes in cold against the likes of Texas, CAL, and Texas A&M.

We had that week and a half off from Vegas and took us a while to get going against Radford.

My concern is when you have a team on a roll and really looking forward to playing as scheduled and it doesn’t happen, anxiety builds up and when it’s time to play again, there might be the natural impulse to make mental mistakes from being too excited to play.

  47. Steve March 9, 2012 8:48 am

ST (43), Do Not forget the AD’s BIG hire, Coach Chow.

  48. Stephen Tsai March 9, 2012 8:48 am

Technically, it’s the Regents who hire football coaches.

Committee picks the finalists, AD and president make recommendations.

  57. Steve March 9, 2012 9:14 am

Kevin, curious that they will be playing only 3 games today, instead of 4 games. No game at 8:00 PM.

  58. Steve March 9, 2012 9:16 am

ST, so technically the Football HC reports to the Regents, since they are the ones that hired him.

  59. Couch potato March 9, 2012 9:24 am

water polo coach – Maureen Cole hired 7/29/11

    w. golf coach – Lori Castillo hired in summer of ’08

  60. al March 9, 2012 9:25 am

st…hopefully those are just “technical glitches” that will be smoothed out very soon and the kona kid’s dreams will become a reality.

  61. KapoleiWarrior March 9, 2012 9:25 am

Somebody refresh my memory. I thought Koetter was the AD’s first choice but he was overridden and Chow was the result. IIRC it was M.R.C. Greenwood and the regents that actually made the call.

  62. jkjones March 9, 2012 9:27 am

MRC dinged Koetter (JD’s choice)….ironic how that worked out for the best and raised Greenwood’s stock. Still, it went down quickly and relatively smooth.

Fans need to keep both eyes on the bouncing ball.

    That keeps everyone honest.

  63. Couch potato March 9, 2012 9:28 am

Koetter was on a lot of bloggers list as being the hc too.

  64. mcb March 9, 2012 9:30 am

  65. Haleakala March 9, 2012 9:35 am

Since he is talented and will work hard, either way the San Mateo lineman will end up in the NFL whether he goes to LSU or to Hawaii. However if he goes to LSU he may have to contend and deal with with cultural shock from the southern environment. He will be much more comfortable in Hawaii and will be better able to concentrate on his studies and his workouts here while being among close comrades. He should go where his heart tells him. Hopefully it will be Hawaii.

  68. jkjones March 9, 2012 9:41 am

mcb, true, hypotheticals are presumptious and can be argued but not proved beyond theory.

on the other hand, we will never know about koetter, appling the same thesis.

so far, if early signs can be used as a yard stick, Norm Chow is a professional college coach Hawaii has long awaited. But, yes, whether this translates to the bottomline, only time will tell.

JD is not in total control of the athletic department. Like any university there are factions (within) who believe they know what’s best for the university. Add to the mix the prominent boosters who also know what’s best for the university. The modern day AD must be a politician first and administrator second. If you ever have that what the heck is JD doing moment, remember it may not have been him.

  88. Garret March 9, 2012 11:12 am

C-USA ADs had two very long meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday about the alliance. This article has a nice summary of what is expected to happen. It looks like the alliance will expand soon, but I cannot see how 22 or 24 teams would make sense–each school ends up getting less money and the conference’s competition level goes down when the bar to qualify for a conference is lowered.

The two leagues, with an expected roster of 16 teams, will form what is expected to be a newly named league in the near future.

However, the current list of teams in the league is almost sure to grow in the next four months as a handful of schools are added to push membership to 20 and perhaps, in the future, as high as 24.

    Good morning everyone!

Couch potato — HF did not play well with the media and got real defensive. He lost a lot of credibility and his “no-aloha” approach alienated people and made small problems/complaints mushroom.

JD has a better reputation, corrects problems, takes the blame and does not make excuses. There are probably fewer complaints because of his aloha. High profile stuff like coach hiring and firing seems to have many hands in the pie.

    Re: JD

It was interesting to me to hear him on a telephone interview regarding the firing of DTD. He said he had established goals for her to achieve and that she didn’t meet them. So he fired her.

What interests me more is what has he done to SUPPORT ALL THE COACHES in them achieving success in meeting their goals…or is it HIS goals? From past comments regarding the football facilities; i.e., the locker room conditions, it doesn’t seem like he takes an active part in insuring the athletic facilites are maintained properly. If it wasn’t for Coolen spending as much time maintaining the softball field I guess the field would end up looking like the baseball complex looked several years ago. Is soap no longer a problem in all the locker rooms? Sitting in the office planning and going to lunches to gather support for the programs is part of the job; however, insuring what you already have is being properly maintained is absolutely necessary or else in the outlying years, that then becomes a problem and effort now has to be made to raise money to clean up all the problems.

Yes, how is JD being evaluated? Any criteria must include how is he supporting the coaches.

Garret, re #89, a poster on the CSNbbs Conference Realignment message board responded to a similar question (about the rationale for expanding to 24) with the answer below. I don’t fully buy the inventory argument but I can see where the whole may be perceived as greater than the sum of the parts.

    ********************

I find it funny that some people continue to “assume they’re idiots” [the Alliance leaders] when it comes to the new conference. Haters gonna Hate type of deal. You laid it out correctly, the purpose of numbers is 1) Negotiating power and 2) Stability. Its no different than the ACC going to 14, which most lauded as a brilliant move. They did that because it could give them a little more money and provided stability in the face of others growing (SEC). Since the new conference is represented by more second tier value Universities, it requires a number of them to maximize their $$$. TV folks talk about “inventory”….of which there will be a ton with the new conference at 24 teams. A Sports Network like CBSSports can have constant live programming on with this set-up. Thursday night football, Friday night football, and 16 hours of football on Saturday. Basketball games on every night of the week. All under one umbrella. And it covers 5 time zones. Regional conferences could not provide the inventory for TV that putting them together will do.

When CUSA left ESPN, it started this ball rolling. ESPN wanted Sunday, Tuesday, etc…games on its network so it could save the better “slots” for Power Conference programs. ESPN only has so many slots, so CUSA went to someone else who had more slots available. While ESPN provides more money because they are on more channels, it only made sense for leagues like the MWC and CUSA to seek other outlets. And since there are 4 major networks, each network has its outlet. The PAC-12 was lauded as a revolutionary when it tried to move from ESPN but CUSA was actually the driving force against ESPN originally, and now is merging with the MWC and providing national inventory for other networks. The BE is heading down this same road. Whats funny is that ESPN cant market but so much college sports (except through ESPNU) because it also has NBA, MLB, NFL, etc…to market. College fans will slowly move to these other networks that have a ton of college programming.

    okay, so DTD was fired.

niho mano, i can’t remember a UH football game cancelled due to rain, especially with synthetic turf. also, they don’t regularly practice at Aloha stadium. lastly, you catch a cold from a virus and not wet weather. 😎 😉

    GO BBOWS!

  105. Couch potato March 9, 2012 12:37 pm

there’s going to be a lot of games on sunday if saturday’s games are cancelled.

    #101:

there is an Associate Athletic Director for Facilities within the UHAD’s staff – she should be primary point of contact for any comments regarding lower campus facilities.

and YES, I will also commend Coach Coolen for his tireless efforts to maintain the Na Wahine softball field and stadium. perhaps, there will an effort

  107. A-House March 9, 2012 12:47 pm

    (continued) to 108:

effort to help the Na Wahine and coaching staff to “spruce up” the stadium and field like they have a “Manoa Makeover” for lower campus.

  108. Kevin March 9, 2012 12:56 pm

Every year Coach Coolen makes it an initiative to gather his team in the beginning of the fall to spruce up the stadium. Paint touch ups, power washing, etc.. Just in time for the official visits for his recruits a week or so later.

    Usually, this happens in September.

Since the reformation of the booster club, booster members and officers have participated in this voluntary effort every year along side the coaches and players.

The amount of things done depends. Two years ago a lot of new paint was needed, this past fall, not so much. So it depends.

  109. al March 9, 2012 1:09 pm

oh mr. ahouse…i am inclined to believe that “the lunch” is going to taste even better. especially when one says, “…i’m still feeling hawaii!”

  110. Kevin March 9, 2012 1:09 pm

I think I’d crap my pants if I was in Coach Coolen’s group for Manoa Makeover. Not too many people can keep up with his pace. So far, I’ve been lucky the past three years.

  111. Steve March 9, 2012 1:43 pm

Kevin, can you please do your sun dance, instead of your rain dance, thank you. 😀

  112. Steve March 9, 2012 1:45 pm

Wow, the time on these blog entries are about 20 minutes off, has anyone noticed that.

  113. Garret March 9, 2012 1:45 pm

ESPN only has so many slots, so CUSA went to someone else who had more slots available. While ESPN provides more money because they are on more channels, it only made sense for leagues like the MWC and CUSA to seek other outlets.

That seems to state that ESPN offered CUSA more money, but they chose Fox to get more exposure. But the fact is that Fox offered more money than ESPN, which is why CUSA went with Fox. Fox paid more so CUSA picked them…the time slot argument is just spin in that poster’s mind. *If* ESPN had offered more money than Fox, the poster would have a point…but the facts show that the poster doesn’t have a clue in the reality of the situation.

The PAC-12 was lauded as a revolutionary when it tried to move from ESPN but CUSA was actually the driving force against ESPN originally, and now is merging with the MWC and providing national inventory for other networks.

Did that poster realize that the Pac-12 signed with ESPN? That CUSA actually tried to cut a deal with ESPN but ESPN low-balled them so they went with Fox. The Pac-12 included ESPN in their TV deal because that gave them the most money. CUSA went with Fox because that deal gave them the most money.

I understand the inventory argument. However, those channels can get MAC, Sun Belt, and WAC games on TV if they want and the total for those 3 TV deals are trending towards $0/year. Now the alliance can take schools from the WAC, MAC, and Sun Belt to get to 24 schools…but if those same TV networks won’t pay anything to show them in their conferences now, why are they going to pay a lot for them in the new conference?

If the alliance expands to 24, that means that some TV network must value games such as Marshall-North Texas and New Mexico-Utah State. I just don’t see how there are 8 more schools that provide as much TV value as UH and many other schools in the MWC and CUSA.

    Wet day in Manoa.

It’s kind of depressing watching everyone wait around to see if the games can be played.

  116. Zeke March 9, 2012 1:53 pm

So let me get this straight; when Herman Frazier hired the wrong coaches it was entirely his fault. When Jim Donovan hired the wrong coaches, it’s the fault of the President/Chancellor, secret factions within the Athletics Dept. and some meddling regents? Haha. You sound like Fox News talking about Obama.

I am of course a member on Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud (I am an avid musician on the side). I have over the past few years spent a fair amount of my cash with Social Media Enhancement companies. However, I have at last found the most amazing (if you like) of Social Media Solutions and I wanted to share this so people don’t have to spend as much time and capital as I did initially to acquire what I set out to look for (Facebook Fans, Twitter Followers, Youtub Views and Soundcloud Plays)…Check these guys out: http://www.socialmediacreativity.co.uk

People can get all fussy about the use of contraceptives, abortion, and all that crap all they want.

The bottom line is I just paid $4.29 for a gallon of gas this morning and no freakin amount of bible thumping or handing out free condoms is going to lower gas prices or boost the damn economy.

$$$$$$ is the key. Everything else is FLUFF prostituted as “dire issues” to hide the fact that neither party has proven to fix our economic problems in the time their respective administrations have been given by the “voters”.

We already have LAWS in place to prevent ourselves from killing each other, for the most part. We need someone or something to run this country like a goddamn business.

  134. el burro sabio March 9, 2012 3:31 pm

Nuff with the politics, back to the matter at hand.

If the AD has set out to hire a coach without knowing if he has the freedom to enact his plan, he is neither a sharp guy nor a 12-steps-ahead thinker. He should have already vetted his short list and fall-back short list of candidates to those who have the final say if that is indeed the case. If all of this is in place, it will be a short process and he is indeed a sharp guy.

  135. A-joe March 9, 2012 3:32 pm

    It’s all moot-

    Obama will win.

    Nuff said.

    BRING ON NMSU!!

  136. madeinhawaii March 9, 2012 3:38 pm

    Kevin..

You can’t run the Government like a business. It cannot compete.. it cannot generate revenues, only collect taxes… it cannot create new business opportunities for itself, and doing for a special interest groups is not a cool thing (but it happens often enough). Government only knows how to spend money. Money it doesn’t have and won’t have for decades as the amount of interest on the national deficit eats up a good size chunk of the annual revenues.

Shaq Stokes grew up in this tournament. Coach Gibs just needs to recruit another point guard to help.

  192. mo808 March 9, 2012 5:47 pm

    Good effort BBows!

  193. Steve March 9, 2012 5:49 pm

Do not see Bobby Miles returning next year. Coach Gibs needs to use that scholarship for another shooter, or point guard. I believe Coach Gibs has one scholarship available, two if he uses Bobby Miles’s scholarship.

  194. Steve March 9, 2012 5:52 pm

Like Stokes has said throughout this year, he has been watching and listening to Miah, and it is starting to pay off. Keep learning Stokes and you will become the point guard that Coach Gibs envisions you to be.

  195. AlaWai March 9, 2012 5:52 pm

Young Bows grew up in this game. Season of mixed emotions and results, but can’t fault the effort put forth in this game and last night. Hold your heads up team! Congrats to Seniors Zane and Miah. Mahalo for your leadership and grit.

  196. A-joe March 9, 2012 5:58 pm

  198. Steve March 9, 2012 6:09 pm

Team could have thrown in the towel, but they didn’t, fought back, showed alot of heart. Thank you Warriors for representing what Hawaii players stand for. Never Giving Up, No Matter How Bad It Gets!!!!

  199. jm2375 March 9, 2012 7:08 pm

Good effort tonight by the BasketBows.

  201. kev-1 March 9, 2012 8:55 pm

Trying not to second guess the coach, but that last timeout that he took was a huge momentum killer for the Warriors. Yet he let them get down by 10 before he even called the first time out of the game. He should have put an end to that sooner.

Regardless, great effort by the team. We need to get bigger and go out and get a couple outside shooters. Like what I see from Brereton and Stokes. Should be a good year next year.

  203. Steve March 9, 2012 9:04 pm

Kev-1, Coach Gibs signed a 7-foot, 240-something lb. high school center, from wafan’s backyard. They also have 6-8 Standhardinger, hoping to get the 6-9 forward from New Zealand cleared. Coach Gibs needs another point guard, since I do not see Bobby Miles coming back. When Gibs put in Pi’i Minns, the waning moments of the game, writing on the wall for Miles. Gibs also needs another shooting guard, cannot have to many of those.

  204. kev-1 March 9, 2012 9:11 pm

Thanks Steve . . . I forgot there were a couple guys waiting in the wings.

  205. Steve March 9, 2012 9:19 pm

Anyone know how good Jace Tavita, or Brandon Jawato are. Like what are their strengths. Both listed as 6-4 guards, redshirting this year.

  206. rooster March 9, 2012 9:49 pm

sorry for bringing up basketball, but why was there 100s of NMSU fans right behind the UH bench and zero UH fans behind the NMSU bench??? The WAC really had it in for UH and the other teams that are leaving this year.

mbb…an okay season in spite of our glaring weaknesses.

what was first considered a great recruiting class turned out to be quite a wash. the loss of gerry blakes, deshawn mitchell, dillon biggs, and ronnie stevens to academic issues really this year’s team.

the first three represented the new age basketball player, athletic, hops, slasher, dasher, shooter and can handle the rock.

i think the replacements did okay, though not spectacular as the first class was supposed to do. shaq showed his potential in the end as did hauns b.

jefferson needs to find a shot. otherwise he was fun to watch.

i hope standhardinger will be as good as advertised. not sure what tavita or jawato will bring.

you know two guys will not be here next year. gib needs to find the missing parts. will gerry blakes be eligible? if not look for two athletic guard/forward types to come in to the scene.

i have a notion who may be cutting ties with us…but i’ll reserve comment.
