We’re giving away tickets to Pussycat Dolls concert

Thanks to the blog’s real boss (and the producer of the Warrior Beat Show) — Sandee Oshiro — we’re giving away two tickets to the Pussycat Dolls concert.
We’ll announce the winner’s name on Tuesday’s show.
How do you enter?
Create your own lyrics to complete this line:
When I grow up, I wanna …
(Keep it clean. This is a family blog, and as a Farrington grad, Sandee’s toughness needs no explanation.)
Good luck.

There have been some interesting sights this offseason. Offensive tackle Laupepa Letuli’s cartwheel. His back-leap into a high-jump pad. Wideout Royce Pollard jumping over your blog host. Quarterbacks Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch running pass routes (get ready for the Noke Offense).
And then there was 250-pound Jake Heun, who missed the 2008 season because of a herniated disc, doing back-to-back, Ozzie Smith-like back flips.
“I guess my back is fine now,” Heun announced.
Heun, a JUCO defensive end who was recruited as a power back, has moved to middle linebacker, where he is listed as the primary understudy to Mana Lolotai.

    don’t need to be famous.

just want to be…. ah, nvm.

anyways, can’t win the tickets, so good luck to whoever does get em…

  8. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2009 8:57 am

Whoops. I had to clarify it. You can create your own line, such as Jason might say: When I grow up, I wanna … be a math genius.

  9. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2009 8:57 am

Hey, I guess that means I inadvertently entered the contest.

  10. letsgowarriors June 7, 2009 8:58 am

basically heun and brashton switched places. i thought the coaches were projecting heun to be a DE. good size for mlb though.

do u know if the coaches are projecting tonga at OLB or S?

  11. chawan_cut June 7, 2009 8:58 am

    I want to be
    Nothing, but the best.

  15. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2009 9:02 am

    letsgo:
I think they wanted him to open at safety. But then you see how freakin’ big he is, he probably could play strong safety, outside linebacker or, one day, defensive end. And he moves very fast, although not as fast as Rodney Bradley.

  16. chawan_cut June 7, 2009 9:03 am

    When I grow up, I wanna …
have nice seats like Stretch and yell at coaches.

wait, i do have decent seats now and yell at coaches and players. nvm.

  17. Rich2176 June 7, 2009 9:04 am

    Repost from previous blog:

    GOOD SUNDAY TO EVERYONE!!

My anxiety is over. I called the UNLV ticket office on Thursday only to find out the ticket guy I was dealing with is no longer there. I left a message for his replacement. Friday went by and I’m getting more anxious.

About an hour ago, I received a call from the ticket office. I couldn’t believe there was actually someone working there on a Sunday.

So, here’s the deal. I could have gotten the 200 tickets today, but they would have been the endzone seats very similar to what we had in 2007. The only way I can get sideline tickets is when single game tickets go on sale on the 15th. So, I’ll be in line at the UNLV ticket office on the 15th. Apparently, there is a hold-up with the sideline tix due to the UH ticket office not giving an accurate count yet.

Since this is such a popular game, there are no group discounts. The tickets will be $35 each. If you purchased them from UH or UNLV directly, there would be a handling fee. Since I’m picking them up, there is no added charge.

I fly to Kona on the 18th. I should be on Oahu the 19th or 20th. I’m bringing the tickets to Genji’s on the 20th. Either cash or checks will be fine.

I’m getting 200 tickets. Right now, I’ve got ticket orders for 185. I’ll be sending out confirmations to everyone. I don’t know if I’ll have time to make a seating chart like last time, but as long as we are all together, we can make our own seating arrangements.

Okay, if there are any questions, just email me at rich2176 at yahoo.com.

When I grow up I wanna continue being a kid at heart, like for example a few days ago in a Subway feeling the presence of the bemused lady behind me I proceeded to dispense all eight different flavors of soda into the cup. I smiled. And she tried holding back a giggle. It was great.

  62. Ronnie June 7, 2009 12:35 pm

roysan16 – that’s great! Did it taste as good as it did when you weren’t “grown up”?

  63. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2009 12:42 pm

I didn’t realize the tickets were promo’d on the front page of the Tizer.

Bad news about Jake Patek (I found this via Tombo’s twitter feed). IMP means import–each CFL team can only have a limited number of non-Canadians, which means that an American player must be a lot better than his Canadian competition to make the roster.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have released the following players:

    IMP DB Virgil Gray
    IMP WR Aaron Fairooz
    IMP DE Garrett McIntyre
    IMP WR Brandon Myles
    IMP DB Jacob Patek
    IMP DL Elton Patterson

  68. NYUH June 7, 2009 1:01 pm

Nevada is getting $650k to play Notre Dame on national TV.

The Nevada athletic department received a guarantee of $650,000 for its Sept. 5 football game at Notre Dame, university spokesman Chad Hartley said.

Tennessee’s recruiting budget last year was $1.1 million! I was happy that UH’s recruiting budget went from $50k to about $160k (if you count the donated tickets from Hawaiian Airlines), but $1.1 million is just crazy.

To put things in perspective: UH used to have a $50k recruiting budget. Tennessee spent an average of $50k per recruit.

UT’s 2009 signing class has cost $1,099,513.16 so far, according to records obtained by the News Sentinel.

Recruiting expenses are most often associated with coaches’ travel and hosting official visitors. With 22 commitments, UT spent almost $50,000 per signee.

  72. Garret June 7, 2009 1:07 pm

The University of Florida is asking their Athletic Department for a $6 million donation this year. It seems like their University figures out how much they need to balance their budget ($9.5 million in 2007) and asks their Athletic Department to donate it. Florida’s TV revenue will go up another $6+ million per year under the CBS/ESPN deal, so they will have even more surplusses…

As part of the university’s efforts to put together a worst-case plan reflecting as much as a 10 percent budget cut, the University Athletic Association was asked for a $6 million donation to help make ends meet, University of Florida President Bernie Machen said.

It’s not the first time the athletic department has helped fund academics. Since 1990, the athletic association has made annual contributions to the university totaling in excess of $48 million — including more than $9.5 million two years ago.

  73. Garret June 7, 2009 1:09 pm

Bad news for all the WAC schools that wanted to schedule more Pac-10 games–the Pac-10’s Athletic Directors decided against reducing their conference schedule for football. This is also bad for the Hawaii Bowl, as it means that the Pac-10 will have less bowl-eligible teams in the future.

Pac-10 athletic directors have rebuffed a proposal by some football coaches to revert to an eight-game league schedule, which some coaches contend would make it easier for teams to qualify for bowl games.

  74. Da Punchbowl Kid June 7, 2009 1:14 pm

Any chance Jake Heun will see ANY time at power back?

  75. Garret June 7, 2009 1:15 pm

Last year the Pac-10 didn’t have a team eligible to send to the Hawaii Bowl and also couldn’t fill their slot in the Poinsettia Bowl (which was supposed to be able to pick a Pac-10 team before the Hawaii Bowl). It is good that the Hawaii Bowl got the C-USA #2 team, as there wasn’t going to be a Pac-10 team available for them and scrambling for a team probably wouldn’t have gone as well as last year.

  76. Garret June 7, 2009 1:17 pm

    DPK,

If Heun isn’t practicing at power back and hasn’t learned the blocking schemes set up under Coach Shaw, the chance is probably near zero that he’ll be used at RB.

  77. βρεω808 June 7, 2009 1:17 pm

I don’t know if Garret posted this earlier, but UNR is getting $650k to play AT Notre Dame this Sept. 05. IDK – seems kind of low…. 🙄

jm2375 and family should be aboard the Norwegian Pearl by now and departing Seattle iright now. Next stop Juneau. Then Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan, and Victoria, B.C. Here is some background info on ride…

The Norwegian Peal was built in 2006. 965 feet long, 106 feet wide and about as tall as Aloha Tower. 93,530 gross tons. Maximum of 2,380 passengers and 1,124 crew.

The ship has 12 restaurants (2 main dining, buffet, 9 specialty), 9 Bars and lounges (drinks available throughout ship–theatre, gym–everywhere 🙂 )

The ships theatre and stage goes through 3 decks and seats 1,042. Spa, pools, hot tubs, casino, library, meet rooms, etc.

The unusual features of the Pearl is a large 4-lane bowling alley/sports bar, and night club complex. Not so unusual is Basketball/tennis court and rock climbing wall.

At the end of Alaska season (Sep 21 for the Pearl), she will head south, pick up Panama Canal cruisers in LAX and head to Miami. In Miami, she will start 7-day cycle upper Caribbean
Cruises which include, Samana (Dominican Replublic), St. Thomas, Tortola (British Virgin Islands), and Great Stirrup Cay Bahamas.

  80. Garret June 7, 2009 1:29 pm

    brew808,

Notre Dame is scheduling Nevada as a favor to thank them for juggling their schedule 5 years ago so that Notre Dame could play BYU. Nevada wanted the game and I guess it is satisfied with the money Notre Dame is paying. I guess Notre Dame pays less for opponents, but they don’t seem to have a problem filling their schedule even though they have no conference opponents. The attention a team gets playing Notre Dame (think about how much more attention the Hawaii Bowl got last year vs. what it would have gotten with a Western Michigan) and the national TV spot is attractive.

You might recall that the reason Notre Dame scheduled Nevada in the first place was because the Wolf Pack juggled its schedule five years ago to help the Irish. The Pack adjusted its 2004 schedule which set off a series of events that allowed Notre Dame to play BYU. The Cougars won the team’s season-opener, 20-17, in Provo, Utah.

According to an Associated Press story in 2004, Notre Dame athletic director John Heisler said the Fighting Irish would host Nevada and San Diego State, which also altered its schedule to allow for the Notre Dame-BYU match-up, in the future in return for their cooperation. Notre Dame defeated SDSU, 21-13, to open the 2008 season.

    “It’s Tricky” – 😯

This speech is my recital, I think it’s very vital
To rock (a rhyme), that’s right (on time)
It’s Tricky is the title, here we go…

It’s Tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that’s right on time
It’s Tricky…it’s Tricky (Tricky) Tricky (Tricky)
It’s Tricky to rock a rhyme, to rock a rhyme that’s right on time
    It’s Tricky…Tr-tr-tr-tricky (Tricky) Trrrrrrrrrrricky

I met this little girlie, her hair was kinda curly
Went to her house and bust her out, I had to leave real early
These girls are really sleazy, all they just say is please me
Or spend some time and rock a rhyme, I said “It’s not that easy”

    Hi Stephen!!

When I grow up, I wanna be as popular and well-loved as you!! 😉

You always say har har with that smirk, but I really mean it! When I was an intern, I remembered how helpful you were to me and I’ll never forget it. You were my first friend at The Advertiser.

Plus, I’m your VP, which makes me your right-hand person!!

like the being that I am
I wanna be free and caring
    Sharing all I can
I wanna be proud of where
I’ve been to in the past
But prouder still of who I am
And where I’ll end up last.
I want to be all of that,
and so much more than words can say
I wanna leave this world a better place
So I can smile when it’s time to face
    the end…

    When I grow up, I wanna …

    http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/05/natasha-kai-is-always-looking-for-more-ink/

Natasha Kai Is Always Looking for More Ink

This above story of NK, written a few days ago, in the NY Times gives insight into her professional career. And also of her participation and rise from the senior women’s national team and all the way up to the Beijing Olympics, where she led her team to winning a gold medal.

The article pays homage to her beloved tatoos, of becoming the first women from Hawaii competing at the top levels and of having a distinct flair earning her the reputation of becoming one of the most recognized female soccer players in the world.

It is conclusive that ones at the top receive the trapping of publicity and “ink”. And it is duly noted that the author’s play on words also refers to NK tattoos, which requires ink.

In the comment section I wrote this:

Being Hawaii born and raised, I appreciate when writers pay homage to athletes from our state. NK, by breaking ground, serves as inspiring others from Hawaii into following in her footsteps. And when I say this it’s exclusionary of gender or sports. For it just makes me so proud, presently and perhaps in the future, when I see our Hawaii athletes at the biggest venues.

My feeling is that giving our athletes a deserving pat on the back, acknowledging nod or a writing a favorable comment lets them know that they’re deeply appreciated. And cherished. And it gives them a sense of carrying the torch for the rest of us looking on.

Interview with Samson after his first practice with the Raiders.

Do you like having a head coach who was an offensive line coach?

“Oh, yeah. Offensive linemen, we’re not receivers. We like to run the ball. But to have him as a head coach, he’s always there pinpointing everything that goes wrong in the front. So it’s like we have another O-line coach there.”

  101. Garret June 7, 2009 4:30 pm

About how the system fits Samson:

Comfortable yet in the Tom Cable blocking scheme?

“Oh, yeah, it fits me. I can run, athletic. And the guys around me, like Robert (Gallery) and Cooper (Carlisle), they’re made for this system. They can run, and I’m just trying to catch up to them.”

    CRW,

So where did you end up going in the Bay Area?

  129. al ™ June 7, 2009 9:21 pm

all right. this might not be the place for this discussion. but, i really need to get this off of my chest.

    3 day furlough.
    what?
what is our lame duck governor doing now?

after years of mismanaging the state of hawaii’s budget, it has come to this. all of the thousands of workers will now have to pay for her folly for past years?
no way. that is not right.
three days per month is a month and a half worth of income.

how is that going to help the economy?
how many state employees will not be able to make mortgage or rent payments?

    good grief.

i could agree with a hiring freeze, reduced spending, even a tax hike in moderation.

i could really go along with the governor first taking no pay for the rest of her term, drive her own car, cut out washington place events, body quards, etc, etc.

there are ways to cut the fat other than furloughs.

    …nuff said.

  130. madeinhawaii June 7, 2009 9:24 pm

    al,

Money will be tight. No one will be spending. The economy will plummet further and while the State won’t lose employees, more people will lose jobs in the service industry due to lack of spending.

  131. Stephen Tsai June 7, 2009 9:26 pm

    Al:
Since we’re going off topic, yes, I agree that furloughs are not the way to go.
It’s not just the savings, but the fact that you won’t have somebody working for 36 days. On top of that, add 20 days, or so, of vacation. And, say, another five days of sick leave. That’s more than two months each worker won’t be available.
Where do they make it up? OT, of course. So where’s the savings?

  135. Rob25 June 7, 2009 9:38 pm

No overtime or comp time allowed!

There is no makeup for those missing days. This just means that some services will suffer and the Governor should understand that people who are being furloughed are not likely to make sure that services don’t suffer. There are many in the state that feed the rumors about state workers, but there are many more who perform services that the public will not notice until those services are reduced or cut.

Some middle ground needs to be found.

  136. Rob25 June 7, 2009 9:41 pm

    BTW

When I grow up…I want to remember the simplicity and fun of those days when I wasn’t grown up. I just want to have good friends, good times and hopefully more peace in the world.

Got back from Richmond about 12:30pm-ish and blogged on here for a little while, IIRC. I was gonna play tourist and head down to Pier 39 side but somehow ended up falling asleep around 1:45pm-ish. Didn’t wake up until after 6:30pm, so that was a horrifically long nap I took.

Took BART to Embarcadero Station (too lazy to walk), walked north on The Embarcadero and took in the sites and sounds of that area. Got up to Pier 7 (or in other words, not that far), then turned back, as it was getting dark.

    Good Morning,

In the old days I’d wake up and read bh2’s posts, like clockwork. Now he’s gone-it seems. In her column, Lee Catuluna writes about the old sugar cane fields. A quote from her article: “A fallow field is a thousand times sadder than an empty house or a shuttered business, especially in Hawai’i, especially on the west side of Kaua’i, where the rich soil and steady sun just ache to grow things”. Bh2’s absence reminds me of a fallow field. Gone are the posts exuding so much exuberance for UH sports.

Right about this time last year he’d be reminding the readers of how many days before kickoff. And his posts included earnestly urging the coaches and players on..I sadly miss Bh2 posts.

  161. Garret June 8, 2009 5:14 am

Kansas is worried about posts from fans on online forums. If their interpretation of the NCAA’s rules is correct, I think I’ve seen a lot of potential NCAA violations…especially if simply posting on a player’s MySpace or Facebook page is a violation.

My worry is that the NCAA will try to punish a school to serve as a warning to all schools…and they won’t pick a big program like Florida or USC, but they will pick a smaller school to make an example of.

Even though average KU fans may not think of themselves as boosters in the traditional sense, Jim Marchiony, associate athletics director at KU, said they become boosters when they do things that could be considered an effort to attract high school athletes to KU.

Some of the rules regarding prospects — students who are at least in the ninth grade, and including those enrolled at junior colleges — according to KU include:

    • No fan may e-mail a prospect or post messages on a prospect’s MySpace, Facebook or similar Web site.

    • No fan may create an online group dedicated to convincing or encouraging a prospect to attend KU, even without directly contacting the prospect.

    • Fans may not contact prospects to tell them about “the great things KU has to offer,” even if they do not encourage them to come to KU.

  162. Garret June 8, 2009 5:18 am

The Cal Bears are charging their fans some HUGE personal seat licenses. It is amazing that they are imposing these charges to their long-time season ticket holders in this economy.

As a way to raise money for the renovation of Memorial Stadium, the university is charging some football fans up to $225,000 to see the Bears play.

The program, similar to personal seat license plans used by many professional teams, will require hefty financial commitments from about 3,000 fans whose season tickets are between the 30-yard lines on the west side of the stadium. If they decline to participate, they’ll have to give up their seats.

“They’re asking $225,000? And they give us crap for being elitists,” Stanford’s director of tickets, Rich Muschell, said with a laugh. “How ’bout those Bears.”

  163. Garret June 8, 2009 5:19 am

It looks like Cal will quickly sell all of the $225,000 seats.

The program covers the chunk of seats between the 30-yard lines on the West side of the stadium, about 3,000 seats. There are 144 seats priced at $225,000, and Rosselli said 115 of them already have been sold.

    For the contest:

    When I grow up I wanna… be rich & get Doll’d up!

(The “rich” part was inspired by some of my students; the Doll’d up part was inspired by the Pussycat Dolls themselves).

When I grow up, I wanna start a scholarship fund for foster children who attend the University of Hawaii. 🙂 Tuition is getting expensive, but education is really important, and I’d want to help support their dreams. 🙂
