Happy Hump/Signing Day. Thanks for all the coverage, ST – it’ll be interesting to see how the day unfolds.

  16. Garret February 3, 2010 6:18 am

I hope that everything goes well for UH today…and that a surprise goes the Warriors way.

I always wanted streaming video like this to be able to follow NLI day…but now that we finally have it, I have to be offline all day. Even worse, I have to wear a suit all day and will just catch up with the list of recruits at the end of the day.

  17. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 6:22 am

Jeremy Ioane to Boise and Shaydon Akuna to Oregon State all according to Rivals

  21. PONO February 3, 2010 6:30 am

Where’s the link to the live video stream? I hate that Ioane is staying in the WAC. Would rather see him at ND so he can’t put the hurt on us.

good luck to VJ and Utah…..NEXT…….

  32. Jun Tao February 3, 2010 7:11 am

didn’t get a chance to see the livestream. Does anybody have a list of commits?

  33. Stretch February 3, 2010 7:21 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Hoping the best for the UH Warriors on this signing day!

UH recruiting includes the players AND parents. BOTH need to be a fit into the program.

  34. Pomai February 3, 2010 7:21 am

    #32 Bulla

    I agree

  35. Buffoman February 3, 2010 7:22 am

It’s a bit interesting to note that none of the UH mascot’s sons chose to play for the team his father cheers for. Irony, odd, whatever. Would have been nice to have seen a son run over to his dad after a play for a chest bump.

    Okay next.

I still believe we’ve gotten great players on the Warrior roster. if they all dedicate themselves in practice and game time as Devon, Blaze and others did, we’ll be a team to be noticed.

  36. Pomai February 3, 2010 7:23 am

Say what you want, this is a good class and good luck to all. Ok signees enuff rah rah time, now is it’s time to go “Balls to da wall”

  37. Pomai February 3, 2010 7:25 am

Buffoman, problem is that it’s just a gig for him.

  38. whitey February 3, 2010 7:30 am

Congratulations to all the hs fb players who signed their scholies. Best wishes to you on your life’s path. For all the incoming Warriors, welcome to the hale and thanks for being a Warrior!!!!!

  39. Bulla February 3, 2010 7:31 am

He’s a left over from JJ’s reign…Turn a new leaf and get a UH student who’s got the school spirit, loyalty, and…would be a volunteer (free).

  41. whitey February 3, 2010 7:34 am

i have a feeling that seeing vii on the fb field is a thing of the past. be great to see the uh cheer squad do their thing.

  43. Stretch February 3, 2010 7:42 am

I remember Paula Adbul’s “Rah” show on MTV where they had one of the students dressed up as a UH Warrior. It’ll be cheaper to have a student be a mascot than someone’s gig. It helps to bring a more college atmosphere to the field and I am sure the student will know when it is appropriate to cheer.

  44. djmitcho February 3, 2010 7:49 am

Welcome to all the new Warriors! Good Luck to those leaving the islands. Just saw on ESPN that Schwenke signed with ND

  45. jeezy3 February 3, 2010 7:52 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Welcome to all new Warriors! Nuff said.

  47. RedZone February 3, 2010 8:10 am

Welcome new Warriors. Thankyou for choosing to play for the University of Hawaii. I look forward to seeing you on the field at the stadium.

  48. J-Dog February 3, 2010 8:11 am

    Ioane, Jamora, Schwenke, Lagafuaina.

I thought we’d get at least one of these guys. Oh well…

  49. jm2375 February 3, 2010 8:12 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Happy NLI day! Welcome to the Warrior ohana all those who signed today.

Heard report that Ioane will greyshirt at BSwho. Apparently following his girlfriend there, which is never a great idea.

  50. R2D2 February 3, 2010 8:14 am

Where’s Univ of Rochester? Is that a D1 school?

  51. Manoa February 3, 2010 8:17 am

Hard to judge this early, but I think so far, this would be one of the few (maybe only) class where we did not sign a single player from the Top 10 Hawaii Prospects– compare last year when we got 3 of the top 10. I recognize this is more for show and prestige than results, but still it tells you how tough the competition is for UH.

  52. Old Diver February 3, 2010 8:18 am

Sounds like someone here is afflicted by the ” I told you so ” virus. A good dose of maturity is the cure.

  53. Aina February 3, 2010 8:19 am

Not to many in the top ten showing the luv for Hawaii. Mack needs to step up the recruiting tactics next year to keep the top local boys home. 2011 class in deemed pretty weak so UH needs to fend off the new challengers: U-Dub, Notre Dame, Boise, etc.

  54. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 3, 2010 8:21 am

Is Ioane the first Hawaii kid to ever go to Boise St in their Div – 1 history ?

BCS Bowl wins is worth something more than money after all.

Welcome to those that signed up to play for Hawaii, see y’all soon.

  55. 808Chef February 3, 2010 8:22 am

I know what you mean Old Diver…another cure for that is a cup o’ ignore tonic.

  56. al February 3, 2010 8:22 am

    its a great class.

  57. al February 3, 2010 8:23 am

    btw…any word on the kicker?

  58. kanakakuuna February 3, 2010 8:23 am

Congratulations to all the student-athletes in Hawai`i who are continuing their education on a scholarship. Mahalo plenty to the student-athletes who signed with Hawai`i because they want to make UH better.

  59. Aina February 3, 2010 8:26 am

#51 Rochester is a D3 program according to their website. D3’s are non-athletic institutions. Only academic schollies are offered.

#55 Only other Hawaii player I remember on Bosie was David Hughes out of Kamehameha who went on to play for the Seattle Seahawks. I believe they weren’t a D1 program at that time when he played.

  60. bstunna2002 February 3, 2010 8:27 am

I want the kids who wanna be here to help improve Hawaii and play for the state, good luck to all those choosing elsewhere, does VJ’s chocie mean he’s gonna live in Utah for the rest of his life…

  61. RedZone February 3, 2010 8:28 am

Welcome Dorian Rivera thankyou for choosing to play for all of Hawaii.

  62. 702WarriorFan February 3, 2010 8:29 am

Posted on UH website as signee.

Desmond Dean (DL, 6-7, 215, Fr., Tyler, TX/John Tyler HS)
Played for one of the top-rated schools in Texas…earned all state and all-District 5-A11 first team honors…also honorable mention all-East Texas…ran track and was the anchor of the 4×100-meter relay team…grandfather, Fred, played for the Washington Redskins…father and two uncles were All-American football players…also recruited by Utah, Illinois, and Southern Miss.

  63. 808Chef February 3, 2010 8:31 am

hold up 702… is that right? 6′ 7″ DL?? Whoa! I gotta see dis.

  64. R2D2 February 3, 2010 8:32 am

Awesome job by UH. Recruited a bunch of highly regarded LB’s. Addressed the need for speed with Sampson. Stocked up with quality DLine boys who will be needed in a few years. Hope Gordy can develop Shigematsu as the boy has some size. Good luck Warriors…..kick some okole this year!

  65. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 3, 2010 8:32 am

    #60,

Thanks for that tidbit. I hope this isn’t the start to a Boise St. pipeline into Hawaii….We got enough recruiting issues and schools to deal with already.

Anybody know if Coach Peterson actually made a visit to Hawaii?

  66. J-FORCE February 3, 2010 8:36 am

Congrats to all recruits who decided to stay home and play for the WARRIORS. Good luck to those recruits who’s going elsewhere. Now, Is it spring yet?

    GO WARRIORS!!

6’7″!!!! 215 lbs!!! DLine!!!! Oh no!!! Were’s the plate lunches for this boy. Actually he has good roots as Fred Dean was a beast during his playing days for the 49ers & Chargers if I remember. Dean is actually in the NFL Hall of Fame.

  69. 702WarriorFan February 3, 2010 8:39 am

Desmond Dean on Rivals shown as 6’6″ 40/4.55

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Desmond-Dean-104508

  70. al February 3, 2010 8:40 am

and desmond dean runs a 4.55

  71. ponojr February 3, 2010 8:41 am

I think there was another local boy that went to BSU – Kapono Rawlins Crievello (I can’t remember what his last name is exactly), who then transferred back to UH.

  72. Old Diver February 3, 2010 8:43 am

If I didn’t see his position I would have thought Desmond Dean was a wideout.

  73. oldie February 3, 2010 8:45 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

…and the No. 1 reason to sign with the Warriors:

You will be featured in the Warrior Beat!

…and maybe star in a Princess Leila video!

  74. R2D2 February 3, 2010 8:48 am

Give Dean a gray shirt year followed by a redshirt year and two years after that….watch out! Huge potential with that frame and speed. Would make an awesome tight end for UH….shucks we don’t use one as long as I can remember. Who was our last significant TE?

  75. richfromOC February 3, 2010 8:51 am

OC recruit made the news in OC register after signing up with Hawaii…and commingled with all the USC and UCLA signing news as well so its not bad at all and Hawaii is getting a quality recruit.

    http://www.ocregister.com/sports/day-232326-signing-school.html

  76. hbomb February 3, 2010 8:51 am

    ST where is Sierras LOI?

  77. midori7 February 3, 2010 8:53 am

    Happy LOI Day Tsaikos!

Congrats to all the student athletes & a special MAHALO for the ones signing with UH!

  79. cheepono February 3, 2010 9:01 am

pitcher from konawaena… and yes i share that sentiment. welcome to the rainbow warriors dorian!

  80. al February 3, 2010 9:02 am

    oh. he the baseball player.

  81. addahknowjoe February 3, 2010 9:05 am

Today, from across this wonderful country, young men have signed up to be Warriors for life.

Lets thank these men and welcome them to our Warrior Nation!

    ‘Gmorning gang!

  82. PONO February 3, 2010 9:08 am

Good solid class but more fizzle than sizzle at the end of the process.

  83. J-Dog February 3, 2010 9:11 am

Did we go 0-for with Kahuku this year?

’08: Falemalu and Tachibana (huge pickups)
    ’09: Tonga and Alo

  84. RedZone February 3, 2010 9:12 am

The Mad Stork who played for the Oakland Raiders was 6’7″ 220lbs.

  85. al February 3, 2010 9:15 am

st…you forgot kody afusia and katina’s name is mispelled.

    what about the aussie?

  86. Warrior Boy February 3, 2010 9:15 am

If Desmond Dean turns into anything resembling NFL Hall of Famer, Fred Dean, the Warriors will be in good shape.

  87. R2D2 February 3, 2010 9:15 am

    #79

Rivera will be a baseball signee. Huge kid from the Big Island. Most likely a pitcher for UH. He’ll be a project for Konishi. I guess Trap is pushing for local recruits next year to increase attendance. UH has a brutal schedule this year and will be lucky to be at .500 when they start WAC play. Both Oregon schools will be ranked in the Top 20. Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, USC, Gonzaga and U San Diego! Suspect hitting with the loss of Catricala and Moorford. Throw in the lack of pitching can only mean a long year! Trap is in trouble this year.

  88. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 9:16 am

Friel signed today, but he said he won’t join until January 2011. He’s recovering from ACL injury.

  89. al February 3, 2010 9:16 am

    jdog…so far.

not a banner year for d1’s out of laie this year other than the two marquee guys.

    more next year.

altho’ i’d invite sauni to the dance.

  90. al February 3, 2010 9:17 am

good call by friel and the coaches.

  91. addahknowjoe February 3, 2010 9:17 am

    From RichfromOC’s link:

“Kody Afusia is traveling from Ocean View to an ocean view – the Seahawks’ center has signed a letter of intent with Hawaii, says Dan Albano.”

from vid: On his recruiting trip, Afusia discovers he’s distant cousins with Lefotu. Excited to be playing side by side with family!

    Only in Hawaii. =)

  92. Stretch February 3, 2010 9:19 am

We have to thank and support those who WANT to be Warriors.

  93. bstunna2002 February 3, 2010 9:21 am

I have a feeling we may not go 0-for with Kahuku this year just wait and see…

  94. al February 3, 2010 9:22 am

yup, in a few days we will all forget about the “top ten” that went away. our top ten will be comprised of the those who have chosen to be warriors.

    …nuff said

  95. RedZone February 3, 2010 9:23 am

    is Friel grayshirting?

  96. al February 3, 2010 9:23 am

    bstunna….i’m with you.
    thus, my comments, “…so far”

  97. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 9:25 am

Dominick Sierra is signing with UH at noon Pacific time.

  98. Kapolei Doc February 3, 2010 9:29 am

    Right on Al!

  99. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 9:30 am

    RedZone:
    Friel is redshirting.

  100. Old Diver February 3, 2010 9:32 am

While the antics of VJ might rile some, he followed his heart. The University of Utah is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,well, in Utah.

  101. al February 3, 2010 9:34 am

wouldn’t a greyshirt be more advantageous?

btw, any word about the kicker???

  102. RedZone February 3, 2010 9:34 am

    Thanks ST.

    Get well Zach.

  103. haka February 3, 2010 9:35 am

In the end, it’s those that choose to be Warriors that matter, but…

When the dust settles from the calming of the Manoa mist,
And the mystical reflections of the rainbow appear…
As the warmth of the rising sun reaches to touch the valley walls…
The nurturing of life secures the future.

    Lucky you live Hawaii!
    Life is Good!
    Live Aloha!

  104. al February 3, 2010 9:35 am

well, would you want a kid who shows everybody up with the hat trick?

    this is a team sport.

  105. RedZone February 3, 2010 9:37 am

VJ gone so be it. There will be no Governor on the football team but there is one that I really like who will be a senor next year.

  106. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 9:38 am

    Zachary Quines just signed.
    All in except for one.
And UH is signing a kicker this afternoon.

  107. hbomb February 3, 2010 9:41 am

    its gotta be tyler hadden

  108. bstunna2002 February 3, 2010 9:42 am

    ST who’s the kicker?

  109. al February 3, 2010 9:43 am

    whew.
quines is gonna be huge player for us.
in fact, we may have the best linebacking corps of a class ever this year. these guys who signed on today will make history.

a couple of hours more for sierra and the kicker.

  110. RedZone February 3, 2010 9:44 am

I don’t know about going to Boise. I don’t think that DC will be there much longer.

  111. al February 3, 2010 9:45 am

don’t forget to add in kody afusia to your list.

and correct david katina’s last name.

    is the aussie with us?

  112. RedZone February 3, 2010 9:45 am

I agree with al. whew. Good job coaches.

  113. haka February 3, 2010 9:47 am

al, you ok? did you take your meds today? 😉

  114. J-Dog February 3, 2010 9:52 am

wow are we stacked at linebacker or what?

I’m still excited for the people that coach mack brought in from the initial class of 2008 like Art Laurel and Alema Tachibana.

  115. J-Dog February 3, 2010 9:54 am

I also love the fact that we are getting high school players to develop.

  116. J-Dog February 3, 2010 9:58 am

    No runningbacks?

I wonder if the staff will convert one of the speedy linebackers into a brusing back.

  117. A-House February 3, 2010 9:58 am

Hello young Warriors where ever you are,
    Welcome, welcome to you,
Family and friends are happy you stayed,
Coaches and team mates are waiting for you.

Hello young Warriors be strong and true
    Thank you for choosing UH,
Tsaikos and fans are happy for you,
    Show the country your deeds.

    (tune: Hello Young Lovers)

  118. A-House February 3, 2010 10:00 am

Boise St: don’t forget the Molokai player who went to Kamehmeha, stayed at UH one year, took off to Boise St, and I believe is still with Pittsburg Steelers.

  119. datruth February 3, 2010 10:07 am

kona schwenke and jamora are alright but ill put my money on three things…kona prally wont play till his junior or senior year and he would never start at notre dame. maybe on kick off. ill take graham rowley over anybody in this recruiting class. he pobably could of gone anywhere but chose byu. i guess we will just have to see who shines on espn in a few years. and besides i seen alot better talent then them this year. ALOT

  120. Aina February 3, 2010 10:09 am

Best wishes to the boys who signed with UH. True Warriors. VJ, what a joke that was this morning with the hats! Hats off to you and the soon to be replaced UH Mascot! Talk about loyalty! Take that stunt up to Utah. Good riddance to the last piece of the JJ era!

  121. YOUlike February 3, 2010 10:11 am

Boise St has had Kimo Von Olhoffen who was last with the Jets and is out now, and recently they had Rawlings-Carvalho from Kamehameha that is with us now.

  122. madeinhawaii February 3, 2010 10:16 am

Talent, Drive, Motor, Team Personality, Individual Personality and the DESIRE to be a Warrior. All that need to be taken into consideration. Some guys have more talent, others have greater drive and/or motor… but Team Personality, Individual Personality and the DESIRE to be a Warrior are critical for each to become a contributing part of the whole.

Cause we all know. When they have each other’s back. The sum of the parts is far greater as a team than can be imagined by simply measuring each individual player.

  123. niho mano February 3, 2010 10:16 am

why don’t the uh line coaches go after the 6’5″ offensive linemen so that we can keep up with the bcs teams…just a thought!

  124. Darren February 3, 2010 10:19 am

Because they sign with the BCS teams…

  125. d1島 February 3, 2010 10:21 am

    Congratulations to the newest Warriors!

  126. Derek February 3, 2010 10:21 am

Anybody has highlight tapes on Desmond Dean. Very interesting recruit. We did not hear about him until this morning. How come? With his physical stature and speed you would think Big 12 schools would be all over this guy in Texas. Something fishy going on? Who recruited him or did he recruit us? Usually the guys we get from Texas are JC guys. Is this player a reach by the coaches? That’s why I want to see his tapes. I guess we will see if they guy is tough and can make plays.
    I hope he’s good.

On another note, the story about Jonas Umlauft this monring is very heart warming. And to think he’s a freshmen and we’ll get him for 4 years, unless he goes pro before that. He’s one those guys who will turn out to be a cult hero in UH lore, just like Colt Brennan…except volleyball is not as fanatic to fans like football. If UH wins the national championship in men’s volleyball, give him the key to the city. This guy is exciting to watch and he’s excited to play too. He shows emotion on the floor and he will get better and better. Did you notice that Jonas got the clinching point on both games to win the match last week! We need to get him a nickname that sticks. I’ll start. How’s “The Terminator”.

  127. al February 3, 2010 10:21 am

    rb’s…elisara, lolohea.

  128. RedZone February 3, 2010 10:22 am

Height is nothing unless you have the talent, skill, drive, chararcter and ability to get into the Havard of the Pacific.

  129. al February 3, 2010 10:22 am

derek….the coaches were hiding him from the poachers.

  130. wowlaulau February 3, 2010 10:23 am

  131. A-House February 3, 2010 10:25 am

  133. J-Dog February 3, 2010 10:33 am

Is Cameron Mercado the kicker we are waiting for?

I read on one of the message boards that he’s no longer at Kahuku and moved back to Florida but is still interested in attending UH.

  134. Cheyah! February 3, 2010 10:34 am

    Welcome to the newest Warriors!

    Tuliau is misspelled too.

    Go Warriors!

  135. Ryan February 3, 2010 10:41 am

don’t forget to put Anguay up there as a possible RB for the Warriors. the kid really did some things in a similar offense at Campbell. of course gotta show love to any of my cousins!!!

  137. JK February 3, 2010 10:45 am

Bye bye VJ. We hope you enjoy beating the drums in Utah..we don’t want to deal with your antics of choosing between UH and Utah. If you chose UH then fine but you don’t narrow down to 2 choices and then slap UH fans in the face. If you knew it was Utah then you should have said….but to do that to your home fans is a major bachi moment waiting to happen. Good luck!!!

Your dad going be replaced now too. I think it is time to unveil the new mascot…the UH Warrior Tako.

  138. madeinhawaii February 3, 2010 10:46 am

I like the way our annual recruits are panning out… Last year and this year. Keep this up and in two more years, the football program will be able to be even more demanding and stringent in their choices as no position will be vulnerable due to the lack of a single recruit.

  139. Kekoa (iPhone) February 3, 2010 10:57 am

Back from the signing session. Very happy to see so many Sons of Hawaii representing their HS class of 2010.

Props to Mrs. SailorBlue for her volunteer work at the registration table. ST was hard at work grinding out the WB inside photos & scoops! HoweLee and I were overseeing the event staff.

Bumped into Nalani & hubby on the way out. They were there to support the Fehoku family. I think VJ confused one person who came to me and asked me if he was signing with Army because of the jersey he was wearing. That, along with the many hats he had, kinda caused a stir.

Was supposed to help with an independent media crew with links to popular sports dot com services on the mainland, but they had connectivity problems. The scheduled interviews with the key commits had to be canceled.

  140. RedZone February 3, 2010 11:00 am

I like how we have been getting more highschool recruits.

  141. Slugger February 3, 2010 11:02 am

Congratulations and welcome to all of the new commits! Looking forward to seeing them on the field.

    Have a great day, folks!

    Esme & whoosh…

  142. Irse February 3, 2010 11:17 am

So did Sierra decommit? ST said one didn’t come in yet but two names are missing, Afusia and Sierra. Supposedly Afusia already signed.

  143. A-House February 3, 2010 11:19 am

    al:

appears that the “surprise” for class 2010 will be Desmond Dean.

i thought UH was out of Texas, but perhpas, they can build a new pipe line to Texas via Tyler HS.

my first impression was WR – could use his height and speed – especially within the “red zone” ( no pun intended ).

  144. 808Boyz February 3, 2010 11:20 am

I really wonder why VJ chose Utah over the Warriors? Too much competition at LB & DL for VJ! Seems like he doesn’t like competition. I bet he transferred out of Kahuku and back to Farrington because he had to compete against Jamora and Schewnke. Oh well, be happy in Utah riding the pine! Time for a new UH mascot, one who’s not so flabby and out of shape! Let’s get a real Warrior!

  145. ai-eee-soos February 3, 2010 11:25 am

    adding to # 145.

    Yeah, NUFF already about VJ.

    and NO MORE pictahs.

Instead, post/print pics of the Warrior signees.

and, time for a UH mascot, instead of a hired entertainer.

  146. protector February 3, 2010 11:27 am

I really like the recruits we got and am happy the majority of the early commits honored their commitment. Hope that some like Darius Bright can make an immediate impact on the team. I’m disappointed Ioane went to Boise, but good luck to him & others that went away. I am sick at heart of the coup that U-Dub made. Hats off to Sarkisian & company; he got some really good ones. And what worries me is that the success he had this year is a harbinger of things to come in terms of being able to seduce many of the cream of the Hawaii crop to go to the PacNorWest. Oh, not to mention the disheartening loss of Cooper Pelluer. But life goes on. With these new kids along with the redshirts, transfers & guys waiting in the wings, I think they addressed some of the liabilities and weaknesses exposed last season. The kicker we’re awaiting is a crucial element of one of my biggest concerns. Hope he’s a good one!

  147. Palolo February 3, 2010 11:38 am

808boyz is correct. Let’s get a mascot that loves Hawaii, not uses UH to make money. All his boys went to the mainland, maybe he should go to SMU.

  148. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 11:43 am

It seems like the UH coaches did a good job of fending off some of the late “poachers.”

  149. Aina February 3, 2010 11:45 am

Sierra’s signed LOI was received by UH. He’s a true Warrior who held to his word! Welcome to the Ohana!

  150. Aina February 3, 2010 11:47 am

    #149

How true! What ever happened to Scab Mike Reilly from Oregon State? Most infamous poacher, better known for his Jeremy Perry about face!

  151. jm2375 February 3, 2010 11:49 am

Off topic, but sad to see Hungry Lion is closed. Can Pride.’s favorite place be next (or did they already close)?

  152. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 11:51 am

Looks like the new poachers this year are the WUSKIES.

On the other hand, BYU lost 2 commits to other schools. Glad to know that when they come in and offer, it is not a sure thing.

  153. R2D2 February 3, 2010 11:51 am

Yup, time to move on from the VJ news. Pack his drums, father, mother, and bro’s and move them out to the Utah cow pastures!

  154. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 11:53 am

wow! saw a picture of the “surprise” recruit and he is really thin as a DE. might be a greyshirt and he runs a 4.55 40. wow he is fast for someone his size.

  155. addahknowjoe February 3, 2010 11:54 am

    Duffer- Mahalo for the link.

To all our local men whom have chosen to further their playing days and education abroad:

Congratulations! We’re proud of each and every one of you.

Remain humble and carry yourselves well. Never forget your island roots.

Represent your name, your family and Hawai’i with pride and honor.

Explore and experience the world. Study hard! Play harder!

If your paths should ever cross against Hawai’i, no hold back! We expect you all to “bring it” and play with nothing less than your best!

Always know these islands will always be your home.

  156. SteveM February 3, 2010 11:55 am

    Good lunch time everyone!

Thanks and best wishes to all those who will be UH Warriors! We’ll be watching for your names in the seasons to come!

  157. YODA February 3, 2010 11:57 am

Disappointed due to Advertiser’s Top 25 listing (Ferd’s list) – none of top 10 local recruits signed with UH. In “my opinion”, Chaz Sevenson should be listed as top College player coming out of Hawaii in this class, great athlete, can be elite DB or WR in College.
    Schwenke – ND
    Jamora – UW
    Epenesa – UCLA
    Lagafuaina – UW
    Crabbe – CU
    Akuna – OSU
    Hatchie – UW
    Rowley – BYU
    Stevenson – UW
    Ioane – BSU

Very disappointed that VJ, Vili’s son decided to attend Utah instead of UH, thought one of his son’s would become a Warrior!

  158. 702WarriorFan February 3, 2010 12:03 pm

Congrats and welcome to all new 2010 H.S./JC Warriors and greyshirts.

  159. SteveM February 3, 2010 12:06 pm

Really bad news reported in the ‘Tiser… Hungry Lion suddenly closed last night. Kid — we’re too late to throw the first Tsai-ko midnight cattle call at Hungry Lion… 🙁

The March 2007 Camellia Cattle Call was actually the 2nd call–but it was announced on the blog. The first was at Hungry Lion via phone calls between the Blog Party 1 attendees. No one had my number then… 🙁

Boy, I fixed that. 😆 But that Hungry Lion cattle call was the origin of the “WHAAPAAAAAAAH”! It took me two years to get the story behind that. 😛

  160. koakane February 3, 2010 12:10 pm

good afternoon tsaiko’s and tsaikette’s a little chilly but still a fine day in hawaii nei.

congrats to those who decided to stay home and become a warrior. best of luck to you these next four years. the fans have your back so now its time to stap up, man up and represent along side the other warrior brothers.

  161. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 12:17 pm

Man! I can’t wait to see coach Heffernan get turned loose on these new recruits! I wanna see what kinda munstaz he can sculpt and mold! Especially out of Dean’s 6′-7″ frame!

Crank out some Akpan and Alama-Francis duplicates!

Kimo von Oelhoffen also went to Boise St.

  165. UH68Baby February 3, 2010 12:41 pm

Regarding Boise State, 2 McKinley HS qbs from the late 60s/early 70s, Ron Autele and Owen Sueoka, played when Boise was D2, altho’ Sueoka came back home after his frosh year.

  166. madeinhawaii February 3, 2010 12:43 pm

Hmmm…. AT 6’6″-7″ and 4.55 speed.. while he’s still getting up to ‘speed’, can we utilize him as a safety/corner on Defense in the redzone? Assign him to cover the tallest receiver on the opposing team.

  167. addahknowjoe February 3, 2010 12:45 pm

After his Kamehameha days in ’77, David Hughes took his talents to Boise St. Then onto the Seahawks and Steelers.

  168. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 12:46 pm

I tell you, Chris Brown (a future Mr. Hawaiian Islands bodybuilder) would make a great Warrior.

  169. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 12:47 pm

Of course, he’d need another name. Chris the Warrior doesn’t have that pizazz .

  170. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 12:49 pm

If I’m a 17-year-old kid, I’m thinking that Boise State — in my short life — is a better program than Notre Dame.

  171. d1島 February 3, 2010 12:49 pm

…you can tell him he lacks pizzazz!

  172. Where's da aloha? February 3, 2010 12:51 pm

anyone know where did Jiniki Timoteo go?

  174. d1島 February 3, 2010 12:52 pm

    5th Period….American History?

  176. A-House February 3, 2010 12:55 pm

There comes a time in everyone’s life that decisions have to be made – to go, stay, run, hide, ask/don’t ask, etc.

We all have made decisions that some where in later life, we pause and ask ourselves, why didn’t I at least make the effort to see what it was all about. Some will make the “replay” sooner while others will think about it and do nothing, just like the first time.

We hope that the first decision was correct and never reflect on it again.

For those who chose, today, to try the mainland, best wishes. If it does not work out, do not contemplate too long for another window may close for ever.

For those who chose UH, we, as fans, will make our best effort to cheer all of your efforts on and off the field and you will be remembered for many, many years to come. And, don’t be surprised to see total strangers, young and old, call out to you and wish you the very best for you are now Warriors!!!

  177. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 12:55 pm

Given the temperature of the topic, here’s a poll question:

Should UH retain Vili as the mascot?
    1. Yes.
    2. No.
    3. Maybe.
    4. I don’t know.
    5. Furlough until the emotions die down.

  181. Old Diver February 3, 2010 12:58 pm

I would hope If The Warrior’s change mascots it is for the right reasons and not because someone’s son didn’t go to UH. That said having a student become the mascot for free tuition for a semester would be a lot cheaper than paying someone to do it.

  182. d1島 February 3, 2010 12:59 pm

A student Warrior would be great instead of a professional one.

Congratulations to all 808 athletes going on to higher institutions on learning. Above everything else, make sure you get that paper at he end.

To all going away to represent other institutions, Sorry if I don’t remember you guys after this week. Just how it goes.

  191. NorthShoreFan February 3, 2010 1:09 pm

BTW…is Camelia’s still in business after the Tsaiko/Bulla Bombers “invasion” this past Friday?

  192. Kazz February 3, 2010 1:10 pm

    RE: UH Mascot.

There are a lot of options.

1)To me, something that should have been attempted a while ago was to see if they wanted to make Vili the official mascot for ALL of UH athletics and have him at all home games.

    2) If not, then go the student body route.

    3) If just speaking about home football games, hold a drawing for 6-8 students to bang on the drums on the sideline near the student section. Rules in place of course (like no noise during offense or running onto the field.) and they gotta dress the part!!!

Thing is, Vili ain’t dumb. He knows with his last son opting to go away for college that there will be those resenting him. Some will forget about it come football season and some may not and some may not care and sit on their hands with their lips silent as usual.

  193. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 1:10 pm

    Irse–

He still needs to sign and fax his LOI.

  194. Kazz February 3, 2010 1:11 pm

RE: Warrior Mascot name for Chris Brown?

How about just “MANA” or “MANA THE WARRIOR”?

  195. jeezy3 February 3, 2010 1:13 pm

Stephen, how many scholarships we get left?
Considering we had some reserved for VJ and Laga, does that open one up for Frank Gaines? We also lost Pelleur.

  196. jm2375 February 3, 2010 1:15 pm

    ST – #178 – 2

Kazz – #193 – there’s still one more left in the fold and apparently he’s the most talented.

BTW, did anyone get a response from UH about the student section fiasco of last weekend? What happened to the Manoa Maniacs sign?

  197. Kazz February 3, 2010 1:16 pm

    RE: UH Mascot.

How about having a redshirting or grayshirting football player be the mascot every year?

If they wanna go the student body route…

    Get options.

  198. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 1:19 pm

I heard that they kicked out Spider-Man for doing something un-family-like with a pole.

  199. Kazz February 3, 2010 1:19 pm

    JM,

I apologize. Didn’t realize there was another Fehoko son.

Also, NOTHING yet from admin regarding the stuff at the volleyball games this past weekend. Surprising too because I’ve e-mailed Clapp before and e-mailed Rich Sheriff once before and they responded in a few days time. Never really e-mailed JD before.

  200. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 1:20 pm

They’re giving a scholarship to a kicker today.
They might have one after that, depending on the grayshirt situation.

  201. RedZone February 3, 2010 1:21 pm

I like Stephanie the Warrior. or maybe Leonard Peters.

  202. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 1:23 pm

I think Vili is a great guy and very good entertainer.
His sons are class acts. Really. They’re very polite, very humble. Good students, hard workers.
But I think there might be an image problem, especially when somebody is the (painted) face of a program.
It would be like if the Punahou headmaster’s children attended Iolani.

  203. Kekoa February 3, 2010 1:23 pm

Vili vote: Opening vote *5* and then my final vote *2*.

(Of course a case of Salonpas would be an appropriate parting gift).

  204. Kazz February 3, 2010 1:27 pm

“Unfamily-like” with a pole? 😎 … 😆 Ok fair enough, if it’s true, but then again the things that offend some or most people tends to make me laugh.

Also since I DVR’d the matches, got bored last night and replayed the Friday match and apparently Jim Leahey wasn’t amused with Venom’s antics to rubbing his okole towards the Irvine players. He called it “socially unacceptable”… Maybe Ole Pops called da five O on da kids during a TV timeout??? 😯

ST, you think UH admin would go with a general admission seating plan for Warrior volleyball for like $10.00 or even $15.00? Also, you think Grgas can file a medical hardship type claim? To be out for 4-6 weeks is gonna hurt.

  205. jeezy3 February 3, 2010 1:29 pm

According to rivals, we offered Homer Mauga, he signed with Idaho today. I think we have only scholarship left. Anguay is grey shirting. I have a feeling a few more like Shigematsu will too. If we reserved scholarships for Ioane as well, I think we should have one more. Lets use it wisely and maybe a Anterrrio Sloan might need a place to play

  206. protector February 3, 2010 1:30 pm

    re: UH Mascot,

Not an easy issue. I tend to agree with others though that having a student be Mascot is intriguing. Hope he has a physique like Chris Brown, too. Actually, that guy that used to be in the muscle suit was okay, wasn’t he? Not advocating dumping Vili because of VJ’s choice at all. But it may be time for a change.

  207. A-House February 3, 2010 1:33 pm

    ST:

1 – I have been saying this for a while; has nothing to do with 3 sons all choosing another school!

At times, he seemed to embarrass UH with his antics against visiting teams mascots. Subdued lately – because Jim D. talked to him?

Time for a change and with all due respects to K. Mark, no more marshmellows!!!

  208. ai-eee-soos February 3, 2010 1:40 pm

    2. NO – no more vili.

he is NOT part of the University, he is a HIRED entertainer.

besides, im-not so-ho, he is an embarassment to UH.

The mascot should from UH Manoa.

  209. Garret February 3, 2010 1:44 pm

I read that Vili makes $300 per football game, which comes out to about $2400 per season. Wouldn’t a student scholarship cost a lot more than that?

Where is the live stream to watch the McMackin press conference starting now?

  211. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 1:44 pm

For those of you who wants Vili out as being the mascot because of the recent developments, picture this. Would you want Dave Shoji to be fired as being the head coach because from my understanding, all his kids are at Stanford.

I am not defending Vili or the Fehoko family for that matter. Just remaining neutral and yes, I do understand why a lot of the athletes do decide to go away even if they were brought up to be warriors. Let the kids experience the world, let them have their freedom to roam, let them learn to be independent, and most of all, let them see it for themselves that the other side ain’t always greener. I certainly went away for school and not because I never liked Hawaii. It is because I wanted to see the world and boy was it an eye-opening experience. I learned a lot and with the old cliche goes “you never know how much something means to you until it is not there.” Certainly holds true for me.

  214. Derek February 3, 2010 1:50 pm

    We’ll find out, if:
    1) Waialua HS players – Rowley and Hatchie can play. They are big, but that doesn’t mean anything. Height and weight is a little overrated.
It’s ability, improvement, technique, quick feet, leverage, and character that determines a down lineman’s performance. Take the example, Jeff Saturday, C, of the Colts. He’s 6’2″, 295 lbs. and said to be “small” for the NFL. He was cut and later resigned by the Colts and today he’s a Pro Bowler and C for Payton Manning. You don’t need to be 6’4″ or 6’6″ to be good. Waialua program wasn’t good and didn’t play against top level competition. Maybe the 2 recruits aren’t tough enough.
    2) Taz Stevenson can play. I’m from Mililani and I saw Stevenson play a bunch of times. I wasn’t impressed. He seemed to react to plays on defense a little slow and he didn’t come up and tackle the ball carrier or receivers right away. He looked like sometimes he was disinterested.
As a receiver, he seemed o.k. but he didn’t have blazing speed or shiftiness. The most impressive player from Mililani to me was Zach Quines. I really like him a lot and UH got him.
    3) Jamora and Schwenke pan out – I was really high on them until Kahuku got blown out against Kamehameha. That means the Kam OL handled Jamora and Schwenke very well. So what does that tell. Maybe they are overrated.
    4) Fehoko can handle the pressure. He was never going to sign w/ HI after the bad things he said about UH and coach Mac. I saw him play a lot and he’s got a good spurt upfield toward the QB, but he overran a lot of plays. He’s a sucker for the draw or delayed hand off. He’s very easy to block. At the end of the day, I don’t think UH missed out on him.
    5) Akuna is what he’s advertised. I never say him play, but is he any better than Elisara or Lolohea from him own team. I doubt it. Maybe he had more ink, but if he’s a safety in college opponents receivers might blown past him. He’s too slow to be a safety in college. He might have to be a linebacker at OSU.
    6) Epenesa crack the UCLA staring lineup. I didn’t see him play, but I don’t care because UH is not playing UCLA.
    7) Ioane can take the place of Kyle Wilson. With a possible change of a new defensive coordinator, things might be different. And I wonder if he can handle the city of Boise. There’s nothing there.

  215. Garret February 3, 2010 1:50 pm

Congratulations to the Warrior coaching staff and all of the Warrior players that signed with UH today. I think that this is a good recruiting class for a number of reasons, but the most important thing to me is that the coaches obviously must feel that their depth situation is under control because they signed a LOT more high school recruits than JC recruits. I really like that UH only needed to sign a limited number of JC recruits this year and think that will pay off in future years when the incoming freshmen mature in the system.

While it was easy to focus on all of the high-profile recruits that were wavering over the past week (Lagafuaina!), we should not forget that UH already had almost a full recruiting committed weeks ago. Keeping recruits from being poached (Sierra, Quines, etc.) is probably even more important than stealing a few commits. Those poaching attempts showed the quality of those recruits and how they were valued by BCS AQ schools, and it seems that UH was able to fight off the poaching better this year.

  216. Garret February 3, 2010 1:52 pm

I hope that UH gets the kicker ST is mentioning. If it is Hadden, then the fight is between NMSU (who he was committed to before UH’s late offer) and UH.

  217. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 1:53 pm

Start googling who the #4 kicker in the country

  218. RedZone February 3, 2010 1:53 pm

  219. TYaiea February 3, 2010 1:54 pm

Re uh mascot, said it last year that we should get a student to be our warrior mascot, this has nothing to do with his sons. Why pay for his services, i think a student/fan will love to do it.

  220. LizKauai m/ February 3, 2010 1:55 pm

Coach Mack: We’re excited about the guys who WANT TO BE WARRIORS (emphasis added).

  222. Garret February 3, 2010 1:58 pm

I just checked NMSU’s website and they do *not* list Hadden with their list of recruits today. I just checked the thread on WSN and I guess Hadden did not give his commit to NMSU–they were the first to offer, but UH offered a day or two later and he was choosing between the schools.

  223. LizKauai m/ February 3, 2010 1:59 pm

  225. lava February 3, 2010 2:03 pm

I see no reason why UH should continue to give Vili a stage to promote himself, and foot the bill on top of it. I’ve said that before today.

He brought fun and excitement, and a lot of us are grateful for Vili and the memories, but UH should go in a new direction. If it turns out to be a mistake, the issue can be reconsidered.

  226. Kazz February 3, 2010 2:05 pm

Hmmm.. If everything was consensual between the pole and Spidey I think Spidey should appeal. Wait, was the pole welded prior to 1994???? 😆

  227. lava February 3, 2010 2:11 pm

In defense of the UH recruits,

First and foremost, Ferd does not know much. He is a Neanderthal. His list is full of guys who have to make position adjustments at the college level. They are, for the most part, projects, with the notable exception of Epenesa.

By contrast to that group, UH stocked up on a bunch of guys that should are a good fit for their position and should naturally transition into contributors at the college level. If they do not get the opportunity right away, it is only because UH always has so many talented players on its roster.

  228. Pomai February 3, 2010 2:12 pm

    #178 –

2 my 2 doesn’t have anything to do with today’s goings on. Being back on the mainland for so many years I got to see Vili on TV quite a few times, an IMHO he comes across to hard, not like a college mascot, an to me he just doesn’t fit with being the mascot of a college. If some of you recall the away game where a UH fan dressed up in a warrior costume and some how got on the field that looked good. I like the outfit just not the wearer.

  229. LizKauai m/ February 3, 2010 2:21 pm

Only thing is if you are on our schedule as an opponent I feel sorry for you when our Warrior Boys open the can of whoop arse on you! Au’ryte let’s get ready for some Football!!!

  233. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 2:24 pm

haha…let it be known to 2011 and beyond or as long as Coach Mack is around, local recruits who decide to go away for college and later wants to come back to play for the home team, that they have no scholarship to come back to. You either walk on and earn the scholarship or go somewhere else. That is the way it should be. Why give up a scholarship for those that wants to be a warrior when you don’t.

I like it! Makes the recruit think twice about leaving and not say “I can always come back and get a scholarship.”

  234. JK February 3, 2010 2:28 pm

Do not compare Shoji’s kids with Vili. Look at his smirk on his face on the picture on the front page with his mom hugging him. Like he just did something really sinister and he did…mocking Hawaii like that. BS. Shoji’s sons never led on that they were attending Hawaii or donned caps…plus they went to Stanford (an institute of higher learning). He is going to Utah. Gimmme a break.

Vili can stay if he like but he is going to get booed. Nah i doubt it but it would be funny and then we can get the ultimate mascot more play…the Rainbow Dancers.

  236. Pauoa Boy February 3, 2010 2:32 pm

Who gives a crap about the list of top 25…no mean crap. That’s based on high school stats…college is a different game, bigger, faster, meaner. You will see which guys step up and become stars. Besides that’s based on opinion anyway, like those kine ESPN (anal)yst who think they know everything. Garrans some of these boys will become stars but the ones who stay home and play will become legends.

  237. Hilo Moon February 3, 2010 2:33 pm

  239. R2D2 February 3, 2010 2:36 pm

I am proud of the job the Warrior coaches did for this recruiting class. DEFENSE! DEFENSE! Welcome to all the new warrior’s !!!
Too many 1st dwns on 3rd dwns last year and it was frustrating. STACK UP ON DEFENSE MACK !!
Stopping a team on 3rd down is just as exciting to me as scoring a touch
    on offense.
The recruiting class’s of the last 3 yrs show’s the coaches are working hard to build a solid and winning team. Win some, lose some, but they don’t stop working. Only time will tell but it’s on the field and the final score
during the real season is all that matter’s.
I for one is very excited with today’s commits!!!! THANK YOU COACHES AND BEHIND THE SCENES PEOPLE AND OF COURSE THE COACHES WIFE’S AND FAMILIES FOR YOUR SACRIFICE….

  242. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 2:42 pm

    JK–

First of all, I am not comparing the Shoji family with the Vehoko based character alone if the rumors are true regarding the Vehoko’s. I don’t know both families personally and from what I have seen both seems to be class act. I am merely comparing them based on kids deciding to go away and not attending the UH. There are those who despise Vili because he is the unofficial “Warrior Mascot” for UH and UH is 0 for 3 with his kids. for those that do, stop playing the blame game and just be happy with the kid. I have been reading a lot of negative things about the kid and like ST mentioned they are class act and polite period.

  243. Pauoa Boy February 3, 2010 2:42 pm

Man I cannot wait to see some of these boys in action. Love defensive players that can hit and get Grazy on the football field. I feel sorry for all the QB,s we face as they will get planted in the turf in more ways then one!

  244. Old Diver February 3, 2010 2:43 pm

    Garret,

I thought I read somewhere that VF was being paid $60,000 a year for his services as UH mascot when JJ was here. I could be wrong though.

  245. Richie February 3, 2010 2:46 pm

With respect to Ferd’s rankings and the comments regarding them, I tend to agree with lava and others. I did watch most of the recruits play this past season. I even saw two Waialua games this year and saw Hatchie and Crowley play. Although I thought overall Jamora was probably one of the best at defensive end this year, Beau Yap was extremely impressive in the State championships and dominated in back-to back weekends against Leilehua and Kahuku. He out-performed both the two ends from Leilehua as well as Schwenke and Jamora from Kahuku. I think he is going to be a very productive player for us and we are fortunate to have him.

Moses Samia is also a very good athlete and will only get better. I am glad that Coach Cal Lee kept in touch with him and that we were able to sign him. Someone close to the situation told me that there was probably a little too much focus by Coach Aranda on trying to land Jamora and that was part of the reason for the late offers to the DT’s. Nonetheless, I think we will be fine for next year on the interior line with Tuipulotu, Meatoga, Hanohano, the Beast, and others. We are probably going to have to make some adjustments in recruiting strategies next year, but, overall, a pretty decent recruiting class.

With respect to the mascot, let’s get rid of it all together and focus on playing disciplined football, rather than relying on hype. I am getting anxious for another WAC title. We can do it.

  246. Pauoa Boy February 3, 2010 2:47 pm

to derek. just because u play in d2 doesnt mean u cant play d1. its called loyalty and besides two guys cant win the game. yea waialua was bad but who do you know on the d1 teams play the whole game as linemen. from d line to o line to running back to punter to special teams and tightend tell me who did that. im sure if they stuck to their rightful positions they would ball out the whole game. but when u play for waialua and ur good. u adapt and play everywhere. thats just how it is. u would u know if u went there. but i guess not. and ask anyone who went to the poly camp and other camps, im pretty sure they will tell you if they could compete with the d1 boys. you would be amazed donkey

Re: Bubba Pouu-Luna. Is he really 6’4″? The last site indicated he was 6’1″ or 6’2″. How all of a sudden he increased 2 inches. What’s the low down? And Afusia. In a matter a 2 weeks he grew an inch. There is a lot of exaggerating around. Come on, Man!

Is David Hafoka in the program and will be on the spring roster? Is former UH recruit Christian Vasconcellos out of the program?

What’s the status and were is Veni Manu and T.J. Alofipo?

I’m glad UH didn’t get a lot of recruits from east of the Mississippi. Seems players don’t last a lot and even leave within the first year..i.e. Korey Reynolds from Alabama, Kevin Konrath fro Illinois, and Andrew Pearman from Virginia. Maybe culture shock or homesickness. Even, Jason Elam, who’s from Georgia wasn’t going to come back to UH, but he eventually decide to stick it out. So, I hope Allen Sampson will like it here. I’m hoping he can play right away and getting to be a contributor and if he feels like he’s part of the team and feeling positive about his experience then I think he be fine. If he’s not playing and down in the dept chart I don’t think he’s going to stay very long.

  251. jm2375 February 3, 2010 3:07 pm

Good luck to those who are going away for school.

As a validation of points people have made here about Hawaii fans not remembering those that went away, read Wes Nakama’s blog entry about the recruiting class of 2005. For the group that went away, I remember only about a quarter of them, whereas, the group that went to UH, I remember all of them that made the team.

  252. jm2375 February 3, 2010 3:13 pm

Derek – #253 – I can relate to the guys coming from east of the Miss. I went to an East Coast school and was very homesick the first semester. But I never really thought about transferring back. Someone once gave me advice to stick it out for the year and then decide. A friend and I tried to persuade another Hawaii kid not to go home after the 1st semester but to no avail. Dunno what happened to him.

  253. Manoa Mist February 3, 2010 3:14 pm

Sorry Pauoa, but I gotta add my two cents about VJ. Had more than enough of their antics. They like the pretty girl who teases you all night but ends up giving you nothing. Nothing wrong with choosing another team than UH, but don’t throw water in my UH face while doing it.
No need Vili the Warrior anymore either. Pau already. Like 95 percent of other colleges, let’s get a student to be The Warrior.
One question, is this Dean kid from Texas the son of Fred Dean?

  254. Hilo Moon February 3, 2010 3:30 pm

    Bleed Green-

Great posts. I had the good fortune of going away for college way, way back in the fifties. Hawaii was always in my heart and truthfully, I never thought about where I chose to go to college as my future home. Maybe it never was a thought because I wasn’t an athlete who develops “contacts” in the community. After 5 years, I was back in Hawaii Nei one week after my last class was pau and have lived here ever since then.

Like you, I don’t understand why a kid’s choice of college should affect the father’s job. ST says Vili is the “face of the program” and I agree that he is and I also think that another mascot would be better, BUT why does ST and others think that there is an obligation for the sons to play for UH.
Come on, let’s not blame the kids!

  255. RedZone February 3, 2010 3:35 pm

Son of Fred Dean who played oline for the Redskins.

  256. NorthShoreFan February 3, 2010 3:37 pm

Interesting that Mack doesn’t pay attention to player ratings by services. It makes total sense that he and his staff do their own analysis of players and how they would fit in with the Warrior program. His explanation of why some palyers were offered late made a lot of sense too.

I hope Desmond Dean turns out like his dad Fred. Fred was a great DE in the NFL. Desmond is a little light but Tommy will make sure he put on some good weight and mass. Then again, didn’t the DE’s on the 2007 Georgia team clock in at about 250lbs.? They was way too fast and strong for our bigger guys.

Warriors got our share of good recruits and can’t wait to see the earlier recruit class in action this year. Mack says some of this years class could possibly start come September. That says something about this 2010 class.

  257. postmanke February 3, 2010 3:40 pm

what, there’s no 48 hour rule after LOI day? =)

Most schools across the country are talking about the top stars that signed, we’re talking about replacing a mascot immediately during LOI day? Are you kidding me, a mascot? Can a program stomach another ESPN story? It would make for an interesting story if he is replaced… wouldn’t surprise me at all.

These kids, the top tier of the class, see the writing on the wall. hard choices some are making. But talented athletes have a great sense of what is going on around them and can anticipate or feel things better than your average athlete, that’s what makes them special. I believe it is part of their gift. The continuity in the program / system may be in serious jeopardy and the culture and the belief system deterioration in Warrior football at the local level is developing faster than a poached egg on high heat!

Taking just a nibble out of a very strong local recruiting class is a huge wake-up call. And I don’t care who you are, when opposing coaches come into your own home state and poach up your top talent, that has got to feel somewhat embarrassing. Can you imagine a top ten list from Texas and not one of them go to U of Texas? – (they kept 4 out of top 5 ) Something is terribly wrong in Manoa in regards to local recruiting.

We should never dis-credit any of these kids quotes in the paper. If some are saying it would have made a “difference” listen to them. Who cares if they meant it or not. It is the tone in the message is what really matters. It’s troubling. What really shows, is now programs across the country will look at this years acquired recruiting class and lobby for the resources to have a more of an aggressive recruiting presence in Hawaii feeling confident that they can participate in the poaching season. – and the ones that do have a presence will only beef it up..

2010 class looks competitive. Looking forward to spring!

  260. d1島 February 3, 2010 3:58 pm

I think we need a little investigative reporting….

From the Pro Football HOF site

Fred Dean excelled as an All-Southland Conference linebacker during his collegiate football career at Louisiana Tech. The San Diego Chargers selected him in the second round, 33rd player overall, of the 1975 NFL Draft. Dean was moved immediately to the defensive line where he starred during his entire NFL career, first with the Chargers (1975-1981) and later with the San Francisco 49ers (1981-1985).

  261. d1島 February 3, 2010 4:00 pm

U know what i wish VJ good luck and health in his endeavors at UH but i think he was yanking UH’s chain. If you are going to do that then take Texas Tech hat and Utah hat and then decide. He wasn’t coming to UH…he just wanted to get the attention. So all i’m saying is aloha oi and have fun freezing in utah. Welcome to the new players and let’s bring back that old hard hitting D that we had in the Navy game.

You go away for college…have fun. Just because you go away to college doesn’t mean the NFL. Look at all the NFL Warriors. VJ we will see you back in Hawaii in 5 years beating those same drums my bradda.

    The Aha! Moment

    …there was another Fred Dean

Frederick Gregory Dean (born March 30, 1955 in Gainesville, Florida) is a former American football guard from (1978-1982) for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. He later played with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League. Dean played college football at Texas Southern University.

So, the success of this year’s recruiting class will show up in 2-3 years.
I’m not worried about who decided to go elsewhere. Again in 2-3 years we will see how they are doing. A few years ago everyone was up in arms about losing Bo Levi Mitchell when JJ left for SMU. That guy is now gonna play for Eastern Washington after leaving SMU. I bet everyone is glad that guy didn’t come to UH now.

  267. d1島 February 3, 2010 4:18 pm

    djmitcho,

    Howzit!

Did BLM commit before or after they announced the red field!

  268. Old School Dave February 3, 2010 4:21 pm

Best of luck to the local players who signed with mainland schools. Represent the 808 well and show people on the continent what Hawaii (the State) football is all about. With that said, as a UH supporter I’m interested in the players who signed with the Warriors and how they will develop and contribute in the coming years.

Gotta remember that these are 17-18 yr old kids. Some will pan out, some won’t. There will be another Richard Torres or a Corey Paredes who will come out of nowhere and earn a scholie.

  269. r b i February 3, 2010 4:45 pm

you gotta luv the size of our o-line recruits.
    The Lbs looking good too.

  270. Charleys Angel February 3, 2010 4:57 pm

Good luck Calen Friel! Your Ohana here in Cali are so proud. Corey, Uncle and I will be at your games. GO WARRIORS!

  271. Ralph February 3, 2010 4:59 pm

isn’t Friel greyshirting due to injury? got to wait to 2011

  272. RedZone February 3, 2010 5:14 pm

  273. wafan February 3, 2010 5:17 pm

    Whoo-hoo!!!

Brand new, shiny, freshly minted Warriors!!! No doubt they even have that new Warrior Attitude.

Work hard and as one, get ready for September!

  276. madeinhawaii February 3, 2010 5:38 pm

Of the 26 signees, 11 are offensive players and 15 are defensive players. A total of 23 are from high schools and three are from the junior college ranks. Thirteen of the 23 high school signees are from Hawai‘i high schools while five are from California and one each from Arizona, Florida, Texas, Washington, and American Samoa.

Just makes you want to smile don’t it?

  277. Just Saying February 3, 2010 5:51 pm

VJ Fehoko’s little show was such a joke. I watched the Advertiser video when he slipped on the Utah cap. There was no reaction from the crowd and I can’t believe he came to the event wearing that Army All-American jersey hahahahaa. Quinnes and Sierra are better anyways.

  278. chawan_cut February 3, 2010 6:14 pm

Thank you Coach Mack for putting everyone on notice that UH will no longer be a “fall back” position; you sign up now or walk-on later.

Can the 6 players, if in your opinion can contribute to your program, accept a “grey-shirt” for 2011?

  281. wafan February 3, 2010 6:34 pm

    “I dont know”

  286. madeinhawaii February 3, 2010 7:20 pm

What part of Vili’s act is “owned” by Vili?

I mean can we get someone else in there to do the same thing? Younger.. better shape.. AND who know when NOT to make at ton of noise and WHEN to get the crowd into it.

  287. EH NO MAKE ! February 3, 2010 7:25 pm

WOW….just wondering, I print a few things some people here don’t like and I get slammed, by MOST of you, and I read thru here and see all kinds brutal comments regarding VJ Fehoko and his dad….WOW.

For what it’s worth young man, best of luck to you VJ, I’ve seen you play, drum and talk on TV, I love everything I see. I like what I hear when you speak as well, you come across like a good youg man.

Vili – well, only the GREATEST mascot in the country EVER, ALL TIME, please, get off his case.

Someone posted earlier, so really, why is it Vili gets ripped but Dave Shoji gets a free pass?

About the UH recruits, I really think Beau Yap is the cream of the class, good luck you young man.
I read thru a lot of dis-appointed UH fans comments on this blog, want somebpdy to blame….um, HEAD COACH GREG MCMACKIN. He’s the guy in charge, he’s that guy that should take the hit for the “quality” he got, and the HIGHER quality that got away.

I am though, excited that Spring football is NOT that far away.

  288. Pomai February 3, 2010 7:26 pm

MIH I don’t think any of it. You can’t own a costume or a drum, what else is there?

  289. Pomai February 3, 2010 7:33 pm

EH NO MAKE I agree with the part of ripping the dad and son about his choice of where he went.

But not about the mascot, I personally never did like him (as a mascot), I can’t really comment about him as a person because I have never met the man. I just didn’t like his performance, like any entertainer it’s a personal thing.

  290. hammer February 3, 2010 7:42 pm

  292. Old Diver February 3, 2010 7:52 pm

    Regarding # 291

Another cheap shot at the coaches and our recruits. This is one of our best recruiting class ever. The trend in the quality of our recruits is up, get used to it.

  293. Pauoa Boy February 3, 2010 7:54 pm

Speaking of Turner and running backs in general…whatever happened to Jack Sula??? John Lister still coming too right???

  294. RedZone February 3, 2010 7:57 pm

Did UH sign Tarra Gabriel fieldgoal kicker from Kamehameha?

  295. Pauoa Boy February 3, 2010 7:59 pm

Ainokea, I’m glad majority of this recruiting class is straight out of high school. It gives them time to get bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, and become outstanding football players. With Coach Hef’s strength and conditioning and the position coaches being able to mold them while they’re young, garrans we going see some future NFL players from this crop of talent, how much you wanna bet???

get a grip of ourselves/ Vili, the greatest mascot of all time, got three sons. all of them never go UH. tthat tellls me one thing. he ain’t UH. he is all about Vili. not about Hawaii. he is a paid mascot. period. he is a paid employee. period. nuff of Vilit the mascot. he can go cheer for the Utes.

and I’m right down on the field, and was cheering for him, because I thought he wa cheering for the tam. To do what it takes to help the team win. I was wrong.

i’m sorrry. i am all about Hawaii. and I’m saying this out loud because I am also thinking about this year’s team. and next year’s team.

  298. Slugger February 3, 2010 8:15 pm

    sportsbow,

I’d vote for a Warrior mascot like that…is that Leonard Peters? Mm-hmm.

I don’t hold Vili’s sons’ choices against him. Good luck to the kids. I do think it’s time to move toward a university student mascot. Don’t know if other universities pay their mascots, but I think paying a ‘professional’ is not appropriate for a university, especially with budget constraints. AND Vili used to tick me off, making noise during our play-calling. Sheesh…you’d think he would know better. Das my three cents…

  302. Pauoa Boy February 3, 2010 8:21 pm

    Mahalos al…

Frikkin Sula, what a waste… oh well I think John Lister gonna be a beast of a running back for us, cannot wait to see what he can do. Alex Green was decent but he gotta run with lower shoulder pads IMO.

On behalf of the Pang Ohana, we would like to thank you all very much for honoring LTUHF. We would like to thank all that were able to attend his service and to those who were not able to attend – thank you for your kind words, thoughts, prayers, support and embellished description of LTUHF.

Al, Steve, Kekoa and Pride for helping us get the Pastor Sam Kapu III, an 8″ x 10″ picture of LTUHF wearing his Tsaiko shirt, the Hawaiian Flag that your gave me; Pride for singing, which really helped soften our hearts (such a beautiful voice your have). You all really worked hard!
Our family is very appreciative for all that you have done!

    Eh No Make

    I am not slamming you.

I am slamming parents in Hawaii who, when given the choice, don’t choose Us First. In 2010, I am choosing Hawaii first. Period. End of story. It is us against the rest of the word. Not choosing a Fliipino. Or choosing a Caucasian. Or chooseing a whatever. Its about us sticking together. And when we’ve got the chance to get a great local player, or maybe a great mind player, to help the home team’s mental health, and we’re arguing if its alright for them to go to, say Baylor, you gotta be kidding me. becuase if I was a kid like Soraes, and people were saying i should be Mayor, I’m thinking to myself, what the heck am I going to be doing in Utah/

so to Vili and the wife, I say, good luck to your son in Utah. For you at UH football, Vili, I am not interested at all anymore.

if Jim Dnovan puts yhou on the field this year, look for seat CC row 3 seats 1 and 2. i won’t be cheering.

    others need for beef up.
i want to know come september, did we find the holy grail?
who’s this new kicker? (when he signs) got leg?
who will we pick up from the walk on list of candidates?

we may be looking at the best collection of linebackers we have ever had.

  314. Old Diver February 3, 2010 8:45 pm

I have a question for the few who question or are even trashing our recruits and coaches. Which Mid-Major football team got commits from every player they were after? Which BCS team got every in-state player they were after? Are we to believe every top Florida or Texas football player went to an in-state school? I want to see data to back up your complaining.

  315. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 8:49 pm

    #312 bighilofan2–

Am I reading your post correctly that you’re blaming the recruits parents because they decided to go away for college. It’s like you’re blaming my parents and the millions of other locals who decided to go away. NO, NO, and NO. A good parent will let his/her son decide where he wants to go to college. All a parent can do is guide them to make the best decision. Let’s take myself for example, I decided to go to one of the top two colleges in the world for my profession depending on who you ask. Now is that a sin to better myself as well as my education? Hope your answer to that is a big fat “NO.” What about those that have no choice like the ones UH didn’t recruit? Are you blaming their parents also? Let’s take one of the tsaikos for example, kekoa, his nephew ended up at a mainland school. Are you blaming kekoa’s relatives also. I hope I am reading your post wrong because this post has yet to be one of the most disturbing post I have ever yet encountered.

    About Vili being a mascot–

If people don’t think he is doing his job then so be it. But I hate to see anyone lose their job especially now a days. But please, don’t let his sons be the reason for his dismissal. Let’s all act mature and professional.

  316. BleedGreen808 February 3, 2010 8:52 pm

To add to my post. Is this what you call “sticking together.”

  317. whitey February 3, 2010 9:02 pm

d1, man, this was the fastest flight to Portland or the west coast in quite a while. Less than 4 1/2 hr. Weather is cool, but no rain, but it going rain. Plane was over 80% full.

  320. Mrs. LTUHF February 3, 2010 9:07 pm

    Al

    U r funny! LOL.

I vill think about it. Okay?

  321. whitey February 3, 2010 9:09 pm

Today is Warrior signing day and like PB says, hs is hs, now we find out how many “gems” we got and potentially, it looks very ” bright”. One thing that stands out, SPEED, SPEED, SPEED!!!!!!

  322. Jason February 3, 2010 9:12 pm

I still find it very interesting that during the six days I spent in Portland in August, I saw zero rain. I had umbrella in hand and everything, checked the news every night … 😛

I met Vili once, seemed like a nice enough guy. But some of the things he does to get the crowd riled at the wrong time irks me. A lot of the fans at the stadium seem to like him, though. If he would just learn when to get the crowd riled and when to get the crowd to calm down, that would be awesome.

  323. d1島 February 3, 2010 9:16 pm

    Mrs. LTUHF,

  324. whitey February 3, 2010 9:17 pm

last yr prior to the season, i felt that the oline would do a good job and they did. looking at this class and what we have on the present roster, my feeling is that the de and dt are going to be major wreckers. this yr’s team will be what Pride said, “with an attitude”.

  325. Mrs. LTUHF February 3, 2010 9:18 pm

Finish up strong in school this Spring and continue working out.
Keep it all together this summer and be ready to ROCK in the fall!

  329. buffoman February 3, 2010 9:25 pm

Let’s just look at the wonderful young men who chose to be Warriors. Think about this, “what was the name of the top local recruit who went away 4,5, 6 years ago?” Then think about this, we all still speak of the Noga brothers, Timmy Chang, Leonard Peters, Vince Mauwai, Jesse Sapolu…those who chose to stay.

Someone said if you plan to live in the islands the thought of playing here may be a good option. Not that you have to, but really, how many go on to the BIGs after college?

Good luck gentlemen who went away and please remember, do well in school, get an education, you’ll never know when that may come in handy and enjoy the college life. You’re all grown up now.

  330. whitey February 3, 2010 9:27 pm

al, if you goin be on maui tomorrow or fri, i stay in pdx.

  331. Stephen Tsai February 3, 2010 9:39 pm

Since I sort of stimulated the debate, here’s my point:
Shoji was hired to win volleyball matches. He does that.
Vili was hired to be a promoter of the program.
There’s no debate to the quality of Vili’s work. He’s a great entertainer. There’s no debate to the quality of Vili’s character, or his sons’. They are fine young men.
That said, UH has an image/marketing problem at the moment. When your motto is “Not in My House,” and other schools come in and out-recruit you for your mascot’s son, well, that just doesn’t look good.
Does he stay or does he go? I don’t care.
I also don’t like the way this was orchestrated. If a person wants to go away, that’s fine. And UH felt he was going away. But because the coaches were told there was a strong possibility he might come, they had to hold a scholarship for an extra day. That’s wasting everybody’s time, and it’s not fair to the next prospect who has to wait for the opening.
Nobody is going to get mad if somebody goes away. But make a decision, let the other coaches know, and then enjoy signing day. The hat trick was fine for Ioane; not so cool for others.

  332. postmanke February 3, 2010 9:43 pm

are all the scholarships used up? every year they are guys all over the country that get over looked because they late bloomed and didn’t blossom until their senior year and cant get a scholarship due to mostly early recruiting in college sports. There is so much talent out there that gets over looked… Coach Tuioti touched on this yesterday. Schools like UH who recruit and get commitments late would benefit greatly. Usually the people that would have tabs on these guys are the sports reporters esp the ones that cover HS, college sports across the country. The ST’s, Wes Nakama’s. I’m sure they get the occasional email “help, I need to find my kid a school” It would be great if there was a service where reporters, coaches can broadcast these over looked players on a site so recruiting coaches can take a look at them. I am sure there’s lots of parents and coaches across the country asking for help and recruiters looking for help finding these guys..

  333. Garret February 3, 2010 9:45 pm

    sportsbow,

How could Leonard Peters serve as UH mascot when he’s busy representing our country by playing in International rugby tournaments with the USA 7s?

  334. Garret February 3, 2010 9:47 pm

Here is a nice photo of Leonard Peters and the rest of the USA team. I think that the Rugby magazine writer needs to check his facts though…

And we’d also like to see Leonard Peters get the ball a little bit more. Caravelli has made good on his promise to put “Junior” in the forwards. Clearly Peters, a quick study and a smart player, has done enough to earn time there. We’d just like to see the former University of Hawaii linebacker get a head of steam and push away a few hapless defenders.

  335. Pride. February 3, 2010 9:48 pm

Today was about continuing your education. Whether that be in Hawaii or on the mainland, it doesn’t matter. The most important thing is to go to school and to become a contributing member of society.

  336. Old Diver February 3, 2010 9:53 pm

And if you saved some scholarships till after LOI day then you risk losing players you want. There is no right or wrong way to do things.

  337. postmanke February 3, 2010 9:57 pm

I get mad when Ferd makes a list of the top ten players in the state and every one of them went away. that pisses me off! =)

  338. postmanke February 3, 2010 10:01 pm

    342

Yep, that would be a risk you would have to manage.. maybe more for a JC player that is ready to go.

  339. EH NO MAKE ! February 3, 2010 10:02 pm

    Mr. Tsai:

I agree with a lot of what you’re talking about. The “hat-trick”, well, not to the home team, by a home kid, in the home town. That’s my take on it, that’s not cool.
I mean in all honesty, it really feels like, looks like, UH got “played” by VJ, just “played”.

I have learned though, that the true measure of a recruiting class CANNOT be thoroughly critiqued until at earliest, 2 years after the fact. I remain cautiously optimistic and I anxiously await Spring football.

Vili, I just LOVE me some Vili. Too cool, too real, too entertaining. Again, in my opinion, the coolest character compared to any mascot in college fotball or any other sports I’ve ever seen. EVER.

With regards to all the local-boys that chose to “go away” to play college football, with all sincerity, I wish you all well. Even if you ever line-up opposite the Warriors on the field, we….I hope you ALL do well but lose.

  340. Old Diver February 3, 2010 10:03 pm

I wonder what UH’s top ten list looked like. I bet it would look different from Ferd’s list. UH is recruiting by need, not by some arbitrary list.

  341. Slugger February 3, 2010 10:03 pm

    Garret,

I don’t think sportbow’s was suggestion was specifically for Leonard Peters. The webpage linked used a pic of Leonard Peters with a UH logo malo. Good example of a fit Warrior. Causing sweet Warrior dreams for this Tsaiko…

    Night!

  342. Slugger February 3, 2010 10:06 pm

    Oops…too many words…sportsbow’s suggestion…(strike the “was”)

    Night again…

  343. Garret February 3, 2010 10:10 pm

    Slugger,

sportsbow has been posting Leonard Peters’ photo for a week or so as a suggestion for UH’s next mascot. He also has mentioned that Leonard could lead the haka.

Even if sportsbow isn’t really suggesting Leonard, other people have specifically suggested Leonard after seeing the photo that sportsbow posted.

  344. traff February 3, 2010 10:10 pm

According to coachtiffskicker (Tyler Hadden’s coach or father?) on WSN, Michael Hunnicutt is the Kicker Hawaii is looking at.

  345. Bowzooka February 3, 2010 10:10 pm

    ST:

How many of the guys who signed today are expected to qualify and how many will not? I remember several of the prominent players from last year’s class, including a couple who turned down Pac-10 schools to sign with UH, never matriculated to UH. Hope that doesn’t happen again where our best commits don’t even qualify and we need to compete again with the BCS schools when they sign out of JC in 2 years.

  346. Garret February 3, 2010 10:14 pm

My take on the Vili issue is that firing him now, right after his son chose to go somewhere else, would make UH look small and petty. Whether or not people like him as UH’s mascot, the timing of the decision could not be worse for UH as it is now.

  347. Garret February 3, 2010 10:20 pm

    traff,

I guess that would be this recruit:

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/queencityhigh/football/recruiting/player-Michael-Hunnicutt-94091

  348. RedZone February 3, 2010 10:24 pm

I am a Governor for life but I sure am liking Kapolei and Kamehameha. They have given us some really good recruits with a lot of character.

  349. Garret February 3, 2010 10:26 pm

It looks like Hadden was ready to commit to UH several days ago, but UH wants Hunnicutt instead.

The kicker coming on a trip this weekend is Micheal Hunnicutt from Texas.

He was supposed to make up his mind today but asked for a visit.

Tyler Hadden is now 2nd choice if Hunnicutt does not come. He also currently has a offer from New Mexico and is going on an official trip there this weekend as well. And sadly to say, it sounds like he is leaning NMSU! This is simply because of the head games the coaching staff has been playing…. ” We want to offer you…. wait, we are offering another kid, but we want you too… we are making him decide today…. never mind, he wants a trip…. blah2″

Hadden was ready to commit to Hawaii days ago…. Hope Hawaii doesnt get taken for a vacation like someone else said above

  350. RedZone February 3, 2010 10:27 pm

I like leonard Peters but I mainly want UH to get a younger mascot.

  351. Garret February 3, 2010 10:30 pm

This does explain why ST said earlier that UH would be signing a kicker today, as it appears that Hunnicutt was going to make his decision (with Hadden signing instead of Hunnicutt said no)…the UH coaches thought that Hunnicutt would be deciding today but sometime today he asked for a visit to UH.

  352. NYUH February 3, 2010 10:33 pm

Mahalo to all our new recruits! Excuse us now while we ignore you the next few years. Feel free to pop up anytime to contribute however.

Interesting that the LBs seem to outweigh the DLs.

  353. postmanke February 3, 2010 10:34 pm

    346,

List or not.. if every one of the players asked if they could play for UH EVERY one of those players WOULD be playing for UH regardless of need in a position. you make room players of that caliber. there’s your need..

I would love to see UH’s top ten wish list for local recruits. – If they have one.. because if have a feeling you cant sign most on the wish list and feel you’re being out recruited, then you would then create a “recruiting for need” list and you would tell a story that you recruit for “positional needs” to make up for the lack of commitments on the wish list. – then everyone believes you, say great job – thats a great plan Mack! Meanwhile he is scratching his head, thinking whew, I better not do this next year or they will catch on to me..

  354. Garret February 3, 2010 10:38 pm

Rivals doesn’t seem to have Hunnicutt among their ranked kickers. Scout.com has him rated as the #17 kicker recruit.

    #337 ST–

Why wouldn’t you think Shoji would have the same image problem? If more so, I would think that Shoji would have more of an image problem than Vili because Shoji is known across the country and one of the best coaches in the country as far as MVB is concerned. He is by far, in my opinion, the best coach UH has ever had. Both are a public figure. Both have sons that have gone to other colleges.

Anyway, sorry to have ever brought up Shoji’s name. I could have brought the announcer or the coach at Nebraska for that matter. My point was, do not use Vili’s sons as the reason for firing him. That’s all.

Btw, I have no problem of any of their kids going away. It’s their life and they decide what’s best for them.

  358. al February 3, 2010 10:48 pm

it makes sense that a prospect would want to visit before inking.
it is like, do you go on a blind date to the prom?
or do you buy the pair of shoes before trying it on?

so, we bring a guy in but we don’t offer until the other guy who we haven’t seen decides first. the writing is on the wall.

leave this alone. we all get it already no sense spell it out.

  359. WarriorMojo February 3, 2010 10:56 pm

I have learned though, that the true measure of a recruiting class CANNOT be thoroughly critiqued until at earliest, 2 years after the fact.

So this is something you learned recently, then? Like two, three minutes before your post?

  360. hbomb February 3, 2010 11:17 pm

Michael Hunnicutt is #4 at the Chris Sailor Kicking camp

    http://www.chrissailerkicking.com/top-recruits/2010.html

  361. NorthShoreFan February 3, 2010 11:59 pm

Wes Nakama did a interesting research on the 2005 recruiting class. Top 10 and the rest of the class. Interesting how many of the ones we got, turned out to be heavy contributors and outstanding players and the top 10 who went away, well only some were outstanding.

Rating high school players and what they are able to accomplish on the college field is really a crap shoot. Judging from the 2005 class rsults, the Warrior coaches know what they are doing better than any of us. That’s why we on the couch and why they are coaches.

  362. Pride. February 4, 2010 1:05 am

Offensive Line in 2013 will look decent with these recent additions(projected weights):

    Kody Afusia 6-3 305
    David Lefotu 6-4 315
    Frank Loyd 6-3 295
    Sean Shigematsu 6-5 285
    Chauncey Makainai 6-4 320
    Jordan Loeffler 6-5 310

Coaches are definitely trying to get bigger. By the way these are all still young pups.

  364. bighilofan2 February 4, 2010 4:09 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywshere.

    Bleed

howzit. i understande what you’re saying. Like ST said in 337, nice man, nice kids. He can come sit by me as we cheer on UH, together.
It just doesn’t look, feel, sound right that our mascot’s sons, who could play for UH, don’t play for UH.

I know all young guys who grow up on the rock wanna get off da rock.
i was one of those guys. but i never had a chance to play UH. never had football my high school. different time, different era.

but i’m not UH mascot. granted, Vili is great at what he does. and he is the most visible mascot in America.. but tats my opinion, because i see him, he is in my face, in my dreams.

ahd UH is in my face, in my dreams. I agree with this principle: we gotta change the face of UH so that more of those we think are the best wanna stay home.

Thats why I like Ryan. And Beau. No doubt in my mind, their fathers had a lot to do with their becoming Warriors. Thats what I’m saying.

or Vili and his boys, good luck to them. i no like him be our mascot anymore. when i look at him from now on, i’m thinking to myhself.

    FAKE. .

  365. Pomai February 4, 2010 4:09 am

good luck to all of them.

and the best of luck and wishes to those that choose to be a Warrior.

  367. tom February 4, 2010 4:22 am

What Garret says is true – firing a guy because his kids goes to Mainland Schools is petty – c.s. at best.

Give him a fair trial – then hang him.

  372. bighilofan2 February 4, 2010 4:46 am

hooo we had a buss up day yesterday. the recruiters coulda done better, image wise, if they’d had help last year, from guys like me, if I’d have been ragging on those that went away. not because it will affect one way or the other of those that went away, but because it might cause those that are thinking of going away next year, to start thinking about what that will mean to them. the positives, and the negatives.

  373. bighilofan2 February 4, 2010 4:53 am

    have a great day Tsaikos.

    hi ho hi ho

  374. EH NO MAKE ! February 4, 2010 5:49 am

    #365 WarriorMojo:

Not so fast lone star – I have ALWAYS felt that way, for a long time now…However, I still believe the UH coaching staff could have done a much better job recruiting Hawaii kids. MUCH better.
Again, it’s nothing against the kids they did land, because like I’ve posted before, I never fault or talk negative about the kids themselves.

For what it’s worth, and I wish I could have the ears of the coaching staff, but much of the local talent, MUCH, and I have heard it with my own ears straight from many of their mouths, the kids tell me the following is true:

    – UH was late in the game on much of their recruiting, LAST to contact many of the kids

    – Unlike other coaches there was very in-consistent contact through their football season

    – Didn’t show as much “love” as the other recruiters

I guess kids these days want that kind of attention, I don’t know, but that’s what many of them are saying. Not my words, I’m just delivereing the message.
I do though, believe it takes 2 maybe 3 years to really judge the merit of a recruiting class.

  378. d1島 February 4, 2010 6:37 am

IIRC, Dave Shoji is an esteemed WVB coach.

The akamai kids know the difference between being shown “love” and “shibai”.

  379. d1島 February 4, 2010 6:45 am

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo…

  380. rage777 February 4, 2010 6:45 am

I agree with most of you on these subjects.

Dave Shoji, the best coach UH has ever had hands down. He paid for his kids to go to a very expensive private school, and he probably expects them to get a very high quality education. Does it mean UH is not a high quality school? No, but Stanford is in a different league. If my kid got a scholarship offer from Stanford, as much as I love UH and enjoyed UH, I am going to push my kids to Stanford. There are only a few schools that I would consider this way: MIT, UC-Berkeley, Stanford, or Ivy league schools.

I remember when I first posted on these boards, I said that I don’t like the press coverage of the kids that leave the island. I don’t care if they leave the island for another school or not, I would just rather have all the press on the kids that goes to UH. I like the homegrown reports because they don’t have entire articles devoted to one person.

As for Vili and his sons, it doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t know what VJ was thinking, but maybe he was leaning towards UH then woke up and decided he wanted to leave. It happens. I agree with others that it seems weird to go to Utah, but maybe he just wanted to be on a team that had a good years the past few years.

I think the UH coaches did a great job. It has to be hard to recruit in Hawaii because a lot of people feel the pull to leave. A lot of kids just want to see what is outside of the islands. Most people have never been outside of the Hawaiian islands. When I was 18, I visited Japan when I was 10 and California when I was 12. Besides that I never left the island. If I could have afforded college outside the islands, I would have gone. I would still love UH, but sometimes you just got to leave.

I am not sure how everybody on this board knows what UH is doing to get recruits. How early UH has contacted prospects or how often? Maybe you had a son that UH wanted and they contacted him late, that’s one person doesn’t mean they were late to every recruit does it? Maybe they didn’t follow up on a nephew of yours, does it mean they didn’t follow up on all the other recruits?

  381. Hank February 4, 2010 6:51 am

…jmho, i think this has been the most successful year of recruiting in at least 10-years…JJ was a genius, but recruiting in Hawaii was not his strength.

…excited about all the young men…big wins getting Yap, Lolohea, Elisara, Quines, Katina, Maggitt, Lefotu, Dean, Sapolu, Samia, Umu and Bright away from BCS Schools…

…and even though we fell short, i liked what i heard about never giving up on recruits that we were really high on…good job coaches…

…being from Hilo, i like Jordan Loeffler, because i know he’s one kid who is going to work to be the best he can be…

  382. Souljah February 4, 2010 6:58 am

    To BleedGreen808,

In regards to blaming family for the kids leaving, we as fans can do that. If you listened to Coach Mack’s comments he said that 2 kids in this class wanted to come to UH, BUT their family convinced them to leave. One might be vj, cause his brother was telling him to go to utah.

Secondly, in regards to Shoji…It really sucks that his 2 sons left, and I think we should hold him accountable for them not going to UH. UH is ranked 6th in the nation! But men’s vb is completely different…they don’t get full-ride scholarships, and we are talking about Stanford as an academic institution. The reason we should still give Shoji some rubs is because his sons would have went to UH for FREE cause he is an employee. Imagine how good UH would’ve been with 2 more non-scholarship players of that caliber.

  383. Kekoa (iPhone) February 4, 2010 6:59 am

    Good morning Tsaiko recruiters!

Just to clear some things. I, like most of the proud family members, were there to support a program that we are fortunate to have.

Doris Sullivan, and *TJ* her very able assistant, are the women who deserves all the credit for making LOI day possible.

For the youngsters who wanted to play with hats, I hope they learn to be better men one day. Take a long look at the majority of the more mature men around you. Check the video on the news stations. Most just had a placard with their names/schools in front of them. That was enough to show the world the choice they made.

My nephew took care of business. He made it easy for his proud mom, like he always has. His plans were very quietly mapped out for him, by him. The stack of mail from BCS schools were impressive offers. His mom showed them to me months after she discovered he received them.

He chose a small college in Utah and completed all the paperwork himself. He made his living
arrangements and his class schedules to fit around
    his training time.

Some of the Tsaiko’s have met this quiet young man. Pride, with his keen sense of physiology, predicted he would grow to fill his long and lanky frame 2 seasons ago. None of us knew that he was very skillfully putting each piece of the puzzle together to be so ready for yesterday.

I know my good friend and fellow Tsaiko, HoweLee was very impressed with how prepared *Nikko* was to sign the bottom line. No hat, no bling-bling, no press conference. Just the quiet confidence that he made his own choice. Oh, and thanks ST for capturing the moment. It really meant a lot to this very proud uncle.

  384. IMADONKEY February 4, 2010 8:38 am

Read the article in the Honolulu Advertiser about Ioane choosing Boise State over Notre Dame and Washington. Sure was puzzling! TV station interviewed him yesterday and he sure didn’t look ecstatic about his selection! Probably realized what a mistake he had just made. Big mistake! Odds of Ioane playing at the next level (NFL) are small. A Notre Dame degree goes a long way. Ask Jason Ching, Punahou stud of the 90’s, didn’t play much at Notre Dame but making mucho bucks in the business world today. Boise State, only thing Idaho is known for is the Spud farms and Mark Fuhrman’s (O.J. Trial) current residence. Seriously, Boise has nothing to offer other then football. Been to Idaho and there’s nothing in that state. Pocatello, Moscow, Bosie, it’s all the same.

Bad choice! Good luck to Ioane and hope you see the field when you return to Aloha Stadium! I may not know much, but one thing is for sure, Turbo is going to blow by you! You and your Bronco’s ain’t catching this dude!!!
