Short cuts to safety

No, it is not a team rule — not yet, anyway — but it is being strongly suggested that UH football players keep their hair shorter.

The preference is in response to a new NCAA rule in which a player who loses his helmet during a play will be treated as if he suffered an injury. (The exception is if an opponent pulled off the helmet.) Translation: He must leave the game for at least one play. The rule was implemented because it was found that helmets became dislodged an average of at least two times a game — creating a danger for the exposed player and for others who might trip on the helmet. Further, one study suggested that long hair was one of the causes for helmets becoming dislodged.

I don’t have an opinion on the matter, but in self-disclosure, there was somebody who had long hair in high school:

. . . and in 1991, somebody had a mullet:

So, yes, listen to your elders when they make suggestions. You might regret it later in life.

OK, back to business. Assistant coaches Tony Tuioti and Daronte’ Jones were at work yesterday after arriving on that morning’s red-eye flight from American Samoa. They were part of the June Jones-led goodwill trip, in which they helped deliver medical supplies and coach at football clinics.

Assistant coaches Lewis Powell and Keith Uperesa also returned from the All-Poly Camp in Utah. There were more than 700 prospects at that camp.

    Coach Chow is a professional.

and a winner. cannot just show up and declare yourself a winner. gotta go out and prove it everyday, day in and day out.

gotta lead by example. thanks for taking on UH, coach.

  8. Moocher June 19, 2012 2:50 am

I remember in our day pretty much we all had to go wanahead (vanahead) for football.

I bet that’s a word you guys never hear long time 🙂

I wonder how ST would look wanahead…..Reardon? Ferd? all wanaheads….Kekaula no can make wanahead anymore though. Maybe all the sports guys make wanahead for football season as a show of support if Coach Chow calls for shorter hair 🙂

Perhaps underarmor can come up with some sort of headcover that is not so slick against the helmets padding? Or, perhaps its the headcovers themselves that are more the problem causing helmets to come off? The good ole bandana used to work fine for me…

I don’t know, the new rule may not sound so harsh…BUT it’s 4th and goal, you’re down by 4, you’re on the opposition’s 1 yard line, 1 second on the clock, and your now down a lineman or two who must sit out because the play before they lost their helmets…not to mention would that be penalty under 2 minutes?

The answer to this is “above my pay grade”.

  9. Shoko June 19, 2012 2:54 am

That rule makes as much sense as having a player sit out one play if they lose a shoe. Besides, I thought it was at the discretion of the officials to call a play dead if he he thought a player was in danger if he lost his helmet, which would mitigate a possible head injury.

    Anyway, morning gang.

  10. BigWave96744 June 19, 2012 2:55 am

Thanks for the 411 on the Short Hair Policy. Looking over the roster, I really only see a small group of guys with Long Hair: Justin Alo, Ikaika Woolsey, Ben Clarke, Chauncy Winchester-Makainai and the longest of the long Corey Paclebar.

There may be more guys, in the bullpen that I missed, but their update picture is not on the UH Roster 🙂

Oops, I inadvertantly missed Alema Tachibana…

  12. BigWave96744 June 19, 2012 3:04 am

    Oops 2, forgot Siaki Cravens…

BTW, how does this apply to Frank Loyd’s Fro?

  13. rage777 June 19, 2012 3:57 am

I thought the helmets come off more because the football players only snap one of the buttons instead of both. You see a lot of players with the one strap hanging down. The hair shouldn’t be the problem unless you are not getting a big enough helmet to fit the extra hair.

  14. LizKauai (iPad) June 19, 2012 4:48 am

Whatever it takes to keep the players safer…

    I’m for it.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

  15. VonAppen June 19, 2012 5:05 am

    Hairspray for helmet hair

Football players grab your hairspray and follow the too-perfectly-coiffed hairdo of a 25 to 45 year-old junior league member or the church lady’s daughter who sprays so much hair spray on her hair that when you touch it, it’s like touching a football helmet: secure and immovable. Often found in combination with caked makeup. pejorative.

  16. Wes'side Warrior June 19, 2012 5:30 am

    Morning, everyone!

Don’t know what the helmet feels like with long hair. Had to keep a “high and tight” whenever I played baseball and football. (Not basketball, for some reason.)

Anyways, this just popped up on my home page:

  19. gmahoney June 19, 2012 5:51 am

Dragged over from yesterday. A-Joe said:

The last time I checked, Boise STILL hasn’t left yet.

I thought they was going get plenny money! All their problems was going be solved! How come they still hanging around! Why they still talking to MOuntain West Conference about staying…

Wait… no can find a place to put their “Olympic” teams? Sheesh! Das easy!

    How ’bout the WAC.

    Oops!… Too unstable. Falling apart.

Okay den… How ’bout the Big West.

    Negative!… BW doesn’t want them back. (Hmmm… I wanda why…)

Okaaayy… why not stick their teams back into the Big Sky or into Conference USA! Eh- Sun Belt!

    -No like.

    -No can.

    -Karl Benson

Sooo,… how come they still around?

Here’s the thing… Boise is like that braddah who woos the pretty girls to fall in love with them, make kids, then bails as soon as a better looking girl comes along. Boise finally hit one grand slam with this rich girl. But she comes with one stipulation:

    No kids.

    Easy.

Boise figured, lets ask an ex for help ‘um. Simple, right? Thing is… the ex’s ‘aint havin’ any of it.

Now, the Big West may give in and take them back. But at what cost? Why should the Big West babysit Boise’s “Olympic teams” while they go off and be Fat Cats with another league?

“Eh, you can try watch my kids while I go play house with my new GF and make Bank? I go pay you small kine.”

What does the Big West get in return? Chump change to cover travel expenses? An extra paltry six figure check?

    Paleeze!

Any benefits or added values comes with accepting Boise’s derelict off-springs?

    Negative.

Why not demand HALF the earnings Boise going get from the Big East to watch their kids! YYEEEAH! NOW we talkin!

‘Aint happenin’. Boise Greedy. Not stupid!

Boise has an infamous track record of being a self centered program. Always looking out for themselves; using others to leverage and propel their self interest and self preservation.

Boise stepped all over the Big Sky to get into the Big West. They kicked the Big West to the curb to get into the WAC. They dropped the WAC like a bad habit to get some sweet MWC. Only to bail in the dead of night for a prettier more lucrative, Big East.

And yet, with all of Boise’s antics there’s one conference willing to give in. That one girl who knows it’s completely wrong but can’t explain why she still sleeps with an ax murderer-

    The Mountain West Conference.

But check dis- The MWC is willing to keep Boise with one catch: Boise’s football gotta stay and be a responsible parent to it’s kids. The MWC is not watching Boise’s kids without Boise’s bread winner around.

Now to Boise, the MWC is an average looking middle class stable girl. But she’s no way in HELL as gorgeous, sexy and as filthy rich as the Big East!! Boise knows if it wants to go fool around, they gotta dump the kids somewhere. Big West looking pretty ideal.

And it’s that very aura of arrogance that’s finally catching up with Boise. They know it. They would’ve left a long time ago if was THAT good.

    But it’s not.

    Boise Not Going.

    Comments?

I say that to the barber every time he/she makes a big mistake cutting my hair. 😉

  22. Shoko June 19, 2012 6:08 am

Guess Boise might end up staying with the MWC if it can’t find a home for their non-football sports. At least for now. But that won’t stop them from bolting in the future if offered an invitation from a conference that is willing to take all their sports. If Boise did like TCU by saying to the BE: “Its all or nothing” refering to taking their entire sports program rather than just their football team, things might be different for the Donkos.

  23. Haleakala June 19, 2012 6:10 am

    #21 Good one!!

  24. Shoko June 19, 2012 6:10 am

    Afterthought here…

Should Boise State decide to stay, the conference should make it very expensive for Boise to leave in the future should they get an invite from a more lucrative conference. Like a 20 million exit fee….lol!

  25. Shoko June 19, 2012 6:17 am

To use a similar analogy to A-Joe, think of that enourmous exit fee as alimony. It’s like a husband (Boise) that is filthy rich who wants to leave his wife (MWC) for a younger piece of a**. 😉

  26. bleedgreen June 19, 2012 6:20 am

90% of the players have shot hair. They look like athletes. The ones with long hair should look at Devone Bess’ new do.

  27. 3-Prong June 19, 2012 6:20 am

Gmahoney: That pretty much covers it. Thanks also for the history refresher course. Countdown to end of month decision.

  28. Otto June 19, 2012 6:22 am

No Clue At All (NCAA) is at it again. The X-Gen and beyond like the long hair and the tats and the new uniform color schemes. I guess we could go back to the days of no names on the back of jerseys and all road teams wear their generic white uniforms. But people’s taste continue to evolve. If a player thinks he plays better or is more intimadating or he wants to follow his cultural practice because of his hair, it’s okay by me. What happens if we ever have a Sikh player?

  29. Otto June 19, 2012 6:25 am

If Troy Polomalu didn’t have the long hair would he get the Head & Shoulders commercial? Nate Jackson, Bryant Moniz, the Dreadheads (Bess and Grice-Mullen), Samson Satele, what other UH standouts had the hairdos?

  30. djmitcho June 19, 2012 6:33 am

From what I understand of the new rule, there is another part of that rule. The refs will now have to pay more attention to how that helmet came off. If it is determined that an opposing player caused the helmet to come off (yanking it off or a good shot to the bottom of the facemask) a penalty will be assessed to the defense and the player whose helmet came off will not have to leave the field.

Why did Moniz cut his hair? Is that the requirement for arena football? I almost didn’t recognze him in WW’s photos, because he looked so different with short hair.

  34. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2012 6:47 am

Consider me cynical but with the amount of money the Big East will make for Boise State, I won’t believe them staying in MWC until I see it in writing. They’ll pay one of these conferences to get their Olympic sports in. Money tends to fix most grudges and ill feelings…

    Hahaha! Good one, GmaHoney!

Maybe the exit fee needs to be tied to the departing school, instead of a flat fee. Like… for Boise, it will be equal to the the first full year’s worth that they’d normally get from the BigLeast, in one lump sum… AND no babysitting their kids!

  83. HawaiiMongoose June 19, 2012 8:53 am

Responding to gmahoney #20, I agree with WarriorNY #44. I still expect BSU to buy a home for its non-football sports in the Big West. BSU will have money and the California schools need money. It’s just a matter of agreeing on a price. And after that UH will be sending teams to play in Boise again.

  84. Stephen Tsai June 19, 2012 9:11 am

Maybe it’s me, but I’ve never felt that Boise football represented the WAC or the MWC. It was always about the underdog or the non-AQ status. So if Boise stays in the MWC, it will be the famous relative, but not really a family member. Boise always forgets to mention WAC/MCW in the acceptance speech.

I don’t care about the money. That’s the blessing that I have. That’s what Hawaii did for me. That’s why I’ll forever be grateful to Hawaii. … I just want to play football.”

In Hawaii’s spread attack, Green excelled in space — ability he flashed briefly last season in Green Bay’s preseason game against Arizona and on a third-down catch at Atlanta. If he’s healthy, he could find a role in 2012.

As Green noted, the Packers have three young backs who could all see more time.

“I’d say I’m a downhill runner,” Green said. “I’m pretty good on my cuts and catching the ball out of the backfield. Things like that. That’s important for the running back in this system, as well as the two runners we have right now in James Starks and Brandon Saine. They do the same thing and can catch the ball out of the backfield as well.”

And when players all reconvene in Green Bay on July 26, Green hopes to be a participant.

“That’s the plan. That’s the goal.”

Boise State has always been about Boise State, but gotta give the administration credit for always looking up and deciding what to do to get to the next level — unlike UH where they are always looking to “protect” their territory and $$$ — and being “recationary”, always with the “reactionary”.

I was very disappointed when they played at Rutgers 2 years ago while still a WAC member and they had no WAC logo on their uniforms — brand new unis, but no conference association.

“It’s all about me, I gotta be me”.

Hello CQ, Hello CQ, this is KH6JK calling. Hello CQ, Hello CQ. ham radio operator talk.

  109. Derek June 19, 2012 1:29 pm

Myself, I like short hair. If it starts to get long I always catch a cold for some reason.

I think Boise St. is getting more arrogant by the day. At some point, Chris Peterson will leave and you know he will because the money wiil be so high. When that happens the Broncos will return to earth. Their other athletic programs are mediocre at best.

Brent Musburger is a Montana guy. Curt Gowdy and Phil Jackson are Wyoming guys.

Can we all give Serge Ibaka a pass for what he said about LBJ today! Give him a break, he’s from the Republic of Congo. Good grief.

  110. oldie June 19, 2012 1:52 pm

Someone asked if I had the 2003 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl game (vs Houston). Just found it. Can’t remember who asked for it.

Also, I was supposed transfer a Hawaii BYU baseball game to DVD. Forget which game and for whom. I think one of the requesters was al. al, do you remember which game?

That’s what happens when you’re my age – forget everything.

  111. tommui June 19, 2012 2:07 pm

#115 Oldie – I was one of those lucky ones that got it from you. It was a great game and good fight.

  112. oldie June 19, 2012 2:14 pm

    Hi Tom

Hope you’re continuing to get better after your surgery.

So I did transfer that game earlier? Don’t even remember that.

  120. wafan June 19, 2012 4:49 pm

Just read an article about bogus rental damage claims by the car companies. Recommended videotaping a walk around with an employee while pointing out all scratches and dents. Show the employee face and say the name several times. I usually just shoot pix but the video idea sounds a lot better to dispute any claims.

  121. Bigislandkurt June 19, 2012 4:55 pm

I never heard the term “mullet” ’till I went to college on the mainland. Where I (and AJoe) come from, it was not a mullet. It was a way of life. For some, it STILL IS a way of life. 🙂

I’m considering re-mulleting. Just for fun. My wife is not too excited about it.

    BIK

    Best to the family.

  123. Dennis Halloran June 19, 2012 5:36 pm

Because the future of TV sports will be on the internet and on Apple TV sets and their clones, it won’t matter what conference you are in, only if you win. Cable TV had its run, internet will take over in three years.

Boise will be smart to align regionally not monetarily. Future of UH will be Pacific Rim internet followers. Follow the money.

  124. A-joe June 19, 2012 6:00 pm

Dennis- Excellent point. The fertile untapped markets exist all throughout the Pacific Rim.

  125. A-joe June 19, 2012 6:01 pm

    BIK- For real, yeah?

  126. gmahoney June 19, 2012 6:24 pm

#20, just to be clear. These are A-Joe’s remarks, I just thought they needed to be repeated. He has been saying all along “Boise not going”.

  127. Derek June 19, 2012 7:14 pm

There is only one thing to explains why the Miami Heat is 3-1 in the series right now. No bones about it, the difference is “James Harden”. He is the reason, period. As the 6th man of the year in the NBA, Harden is having a terrible series, except for game 1. Had he just played to his 6th man credentials and his season’s average the Thunder probably would have swept the series already. All 4 games were very competitive til the very end of the 4th quarter. If Harden, somehow, can find his shooting touch the Thunder can still win the series. If they win game 5 on Thursday, the series go back to OKC where the Thunder will probably be favorites at home. They key is Thursday and James Harden has to step up.

Serge Ibaka needs to perform better too, as well as Derek Fisher, as scorers to support Westbrook and Durant. The Heat have been lucky on the 3s, but if they start missing a little more the Thunder can turn it around. Still, James Harden is the key!

  132. Kekoa June 19, 2012 10:18 pm

Old timers take a knee, and listen up.

Remember when Y.A. Title would flip a high pass into the end zone and R.C. Owens would snatch it over the heads of his shorter defenders? The play was forever made popular as the infamous Alley Oop pass.

RC passed away the other day, and I can’t think of another descriptive football play that has become as famous. It even crossed over into Basketball when the tall guy takes an *Alley Oop* pass over the short guy for the slamma jam!

    RIP Mr. Owens.
