Sunday ramblings:
• I just noticed a quirk in the men’s volleyball schedule. The Warriors play their final regular-season home matches, against UC San Diego, Friday and Saturday. But wait. The following week, April 10, is the alumni match. So when does UH celebrate Senior Night?
• With last night’s sweep of Pepperdine, Charlie Wade has to be the leading contender for Coach of the Year. Sure, the Warriors were expected to be better with the addition of Jonas Umlauft, who was recruited by Mike Wilton and Tino Reyes. But as we’ve learned, having promise isn’t the same as keeping a promise. Wade has done an excellent job of keeping the players motivated and focused. What’s more, the Warriors have played better in the road rematches, adjustments made by watching videos projected on hotel walls. That’s good coaching.
• Kelly Majam’s pursuit of Kate Robinson’s single-season home run record is not exactly the McGwire-Sosa chase. It’s better. Majam is an amazing player.
• It also is fun to watch the Rainbow Wahine’s infield. They might not be the most artful defenders, but they are gritty and they make plays. Watching Amanda Taualii dive for a ball — in foul territory — shows this team’s passion.
• I need to start paying more attention. Apparently, the coaches were raving about defensive end Kamalu Umu’s play against the first-team offense in last year’s practices. Umu should be one of more intriguing players to watch when spring training opens Wednesday.

Amanda was hit 3 times in yesterday’s double header – 2x in the 2nd game.
From my perspective, I could not detect any intentional “brushing” by Amanda – just good excecution of getting the runner out at 1st base.
It sounded like the 1st base ump was telling the head umpire that the SJSU player did something wrong and then the coach came out and talked to his 1st baseman.
Next time on TV or at the game, watch how Kelly Majam “practice” swings her bat. It had incredible speed as she “breaks her wrist”. She has very strong wrists which contributes for power!!! And, as another posted, she makes contact with the ball “in front” of her giving her bat more power.

If Gordy Shaw eventually leaves UH for a big opportunity somewhere else, I’d like for Adrian Klemm to coach the OL at UH. I like Klemm’s recruiting philosophy…and he’s been able to recruit the 6’5″, 6’6″, and 6’7″ OL recruits that fit his philosophy.
With Under Armour on my feet, I feel I can touch the sky!!!!

A-House ~ Thanks for clearing that up. Ms. Taualii did indeed have a very physical day. The dive for the foul ball, and being nailed in the back with a fast ball even ONCE is no fun.
What amazed me about her s-t-r-e-t-c-h to receive the throw from young Yoshikawa, was her ability to hop right up after the catch! It would have taken a crane to pick me up from that position! Bwhahahaha!
One other thing about Kelly’s swing. Being very compact and technically proficient is the key. It allows her to generate great bat speed to explode on the ball at the point of extension.
She also has the ability to ‘go’ with the pitch on the outside corner and take it to Left field as she did last night. A bit more oomph and it would have been in the Tennis courts.
Her other 2 homers in the 2nd game easily cleared the Right field scoreboard…and that is what you call givin’ it a ride!
I like Pomai’s idea of a fund-raiser pitting the MBB against the Wahines in Softball. People would pay good money to attend. My money is on the Wahine because I don’t think they could ‘touch’ the Wahine pitchers.

Bout to head out the door… It’s Wrestlemania 26 and gonna head out to a BBQ while we catch it on PPV. The event is being held in the University of Phoenix Stadium where the Cardinals play and where the Fiesta Bowl is held. No doubt WWE will shatter the attendance record again in this giant venue.
UFC needs to learn from WWE on how to create and atmosphere worthy of the price of admission. Yeah WWE is a show and UFC is real, but if I’m gonna shell out 50.00 for a PPV or 500.00-200.00 a ticket for a big event like this, the damn matches better last their advertised length!!!!!! 😆

2 Butlers. Butler Univ. is a great story. They should already start planning Hoosiers 2 if they win the whole thing. DeSean Butler leads West Virginia over Kentucky. “Country roads, take me home. To the place, I belong.”
I love Michigan St. too and that gritty band of Spartans. I am impressed w/ the big guy, Draymond Green. He can handle the ball like a guard and pass like a guard. What a talent.
UH softball should charge admission. People can pay at least a dollar to see them play. In this economy, they have to generate revenue if they can. Otherwise, people should donate to their program at least to pay for basic
expenses. For sure, they are very good. Majam is an All-American. The best thing is she’s a freshman. Iwata ain’t shabby either. She’s got some pop in her swing too. Another freshman.
Men’s volleyball are tough as nails. Umlauft is the newcomer of the year for sure.
Baseball is up and down. It could be Trapasso’s last year. I’m not too impressed w/ the team. They don’t seem to have the passion and the fire. Batters look very passive and are not agressive. Pitchers are very slow in pitching and pitchers do not change speeds enough to keep batter off balance. I attribute it to the coaching, or lack of coaching. But, that’s not a surprise. It’s been like that a last 5 years. I’m thinking we need a change if we don’t make it to a regional.
Let’s see what happends! That’s Warrior Football and men’s basketball.
Tiger Wooods should change his personna. He should smile more, be more engaging, be more positive, and enjoy himself our there on the links rather than be so serious all the time. Now that some of the pressure is off from his revalations of transgressions some time have elasped and he can now go forward and be more open. If he’s learned anything, he should heed his Buddhist teachings of wisdom and compassion.

North Shore Fan will be burning some animal parts on his homemade grill, and coach Bulla will need volunteers to sample his Spe-show-in-greed-da-mints as he burns some pots and pans creating his masterpiece menu.
All these Celeb Chefs got nuttin’ on our Tsaiko Grill Team. J(J) heads up the staff of award winning chefs consisting of Homey, Ralph, Hi-Flyer and Koakane. The addition of Herr Bulla and NorthShore Fan is a treat.

Wow, although much improved over the 57 or 58 sacks the offensive line gave up 2 seasons ago, last year’s offensive front was still very poor. 36 sacks allowed is nothing to proud of. I mean I can’t realistically see Shaw getting a call from a “big opportunity”.
I do however, agree with your wish to have Adrian Klemm coach at UH. That, would be awesome, but I can’t see June Jones ever letting get away.

I’ve often heard and / or read comments by coach Mack recently and during the 2009 season, praising Shaw’s efforts with the Warriors offensive line, but each comment left me scratching my head….as in WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT?
What excites me about this season, Bryant Moniz and the “quality” work he got it as a sophomore. I love me some Alex Green, Vaughn Meatoga, when healthy, is a monster and I think Hawaii’s work in the secondary was MUCH improved.
Is it just me, or should the NCAA be forced to make rulings on players with MUCH more consideration for both the institutions and the players involved…? I mean Spring football is upon us, and NO ruling yet on Brashton Satele or Laupepa Letuli.
I find this ridiculous by the NCAA.

Aside from Kia, I thought a number of O-linemen did show improved play. I’m sure it will continue / be more evident in the coming season. Although I disagree that Shaw wouldn’t be in line to get some “big opportunity” feelers, I actually hope you’re right because I don’t want to see Coach Shaw leave. At least I’m happy that in one interview (w/ Coach Tormey) he indicated that those kind of opportunities aren’t as appealing to him at his age & that he just wants to “coach his guys”- I love that. Coach Tormey on the other hand WOULD leave if there’s a good position upgrade or HC opportunity, but I also hope it won’t be right away with the great job that he’s doing.

I am of the thought that Aaron Kia, of all the UH players last season that are hopeful of pro careers, has the best chance to make it.
My thinking is this: John Estes, with his brilliant college career behind him, didn’t get an invite to the combine, I think that’s a direct result of the height / weight / strength ration that sometimes pro teams make too much of. Kia however, HAS all of that. Size, height, length, decent footwork and a frame that could easily carry 25-30 more pounds. I think pro teams salivate over such tangibles.
And, we will see, regarding the impact of Gordy Shaw.
Tormey too for that matter. I do like the strides he’s made in the secondary (safety), but special teams, in my opinion, leave a lot to be desired. All that “directional” kick-off and punting last season, to me, to many for that matter, was absolute non-sense.
The “aussie” punter has a weapon for a leg, let to the kid just kick the crap out of it! Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

I, too, was surprised by Leonard’s move to left guard.
But Gordy Shaw said it was at Leonard’s suggestion, and that he felt more comfortable there. Left tackle is the big money position. But we all saw what Idaho could do with a big, menacing guard.
And as one of the posters said earlier, at least this seals the inside. You just don’t want to be vulnerable up the middle.
I’m hoping it was because of spring break.
But what made softball fun in the past was all of those student-athletes showing up. OK, some was helped by that woman Cindy, who staged ice cream and pizza socials right around the time of softball games.
But I remember a few years ago when UH played Fresno State on a Friday night. The place was packed. Inoke Funaki led the way, with a drum and a big Hawaiian flag. UH ended up ousting Fresno State’s All-America pitcher (Robin Mackin).

Aside from the lack of physical attributes, I think John Estes’ body of work over the last 4 years speaks for itself. I do agree with you that the NFL is always more enamored with attributes & potential, rather than actual play. I think there are more factors involved however. I feel that the lack of the team success has unfortunately affected Estes’ attractiveness adversely. In previous years, he was
considered among the best (if not THE best) centers nationally. Any NFL team that would take Kia over Estes because of size & potential – good luck to them on that project; they’d deserve everything they get. But stranger thngs have happened; I won’t rule out that travesty from ever happening.
ST – I do like the move by Leonard to the Guard position. I just hope one of the Centers emerges & the Tackles can get their protection schemes together-then look out!
EH NO MAKE! – I agree about that idiotic directional punting thing this past season. I see the strategic potential of it, but this year it just caused too many penalties at crucial times. As for the NFL and the aforementioned linemen we were discussing, the NFL does salivate over size, weight, length / reach. What about the intangibles of heart & desire and the observables of consistency & work ethic?
I was there that night against Fresno State. It wasn’t super packed, but I heard it was the largest crowd ever. Herman Frazier was sitting down the row from me … 🙁
Funny thing happened during a game when UH starting left tackle lost his balance forward and backward before the ball was hiked – indications of a “potential” NFL palyer?

The Leg has a bill that will cut a further $59 million from UH next year HB 2625. It takes funds student paid for dorms, takes $20 million in tuition money, cancels the Cancer Center. It will result in massive cuts in classes.
The campuses will have trouble keeping the lights on.
At that point it will be really hard to justify the football program, so if the bill passes, let’s hope we go out with a winning season.

while shaw has made great strides with the line the other factor that separates the elite coaches is whether they can recruit or not. i think that shaw still needs to sharpen the pencil on pass blocking techniques and fundamentals.
i, too, believe that a focused aaron kia who can envision the light at the end of the tunnel and take a mature attitude could land on someone’s rosters this year.
if you clear your head and thoughts about all of the penalties incurred you will see a rather great athlete under it all. i think if he had tutored under a brilliant line coach like cav and sculpted his body the way an olineman should have we would not be talking doubts.
#59 EH NO MAKE !:
36 sacks averages out to just under 3 per game. Not too bad for a team that runs the R & S (I should have checked what SMU averaged last year). And I would consider that a new QB had to step in and get game experience. We all know that teams will throw a lot of blitzes at a new QB while he’s trying to get up to speed on his reads. Probably, the O-line did catch a break because Moniz was mobile enough to escape some sacks.
I just wonder what kind of adjustment, if any, that Shaw had to make for teaching blocking in a R & S. I second the thoughts on Klemm!
The more I hear scuttlebutt about UH eligibility problems, the less I put the full blame on the NCAA. Seems like the UH (and sometimes the athlete), are equally at fault. If everything is not documented in a timely manner, it’s hard to expect to get decisions.
I think the best thing Mack did was empower Gordy Shaw to call the shots with the offensive line.
Separately, Brian Smith and Alex Gerke are good coaches. Smith has a deep knowledge of the four-wide offense. Thing was, it just didn’t work out having two voices.
What I do like about Gordy is he gives his players a lot of positive reinforcement. I mean, nobody wants to jump off sides. Things happen. You anticipate things or hear things you didn’t really hear, and break out of a stance too early. The player knows he makes a mistake. That’s why his number is announced and the official is moving the ball back 5 yards. Yelling is going to do anything at that point. But teaching a guy how to be more prepared, that’s helpful.
ncaa should have a timeline for these career deciding decisions. perhaps x number of days from when the petition was first filed would be a reasonable time frame.
it is not only the player who is in jeopardy, the university is also held hostage as another scholie could be offered. the ncaa needs to work expeditiously as this double jeopardy impacts too many.
and it gives them the appearance of being to slow and inefficient when deciding these matters.
so is the gibber expected in manoa sometime tomorrow?
i was thinking that perhaps an official announcement will be made tomw on at least the associate head bb coach since the human resource office will be back in business after the furlough week.
would also be nice if a recruit visit happens this week.

Re: Eligibility.
As I’ve stated before, the problem does go back to documentation, and that goes back to the mindset of a freshman.
OK, figure a guy is three months out of high school. He’s trying to prove he belongs. But he gets injured. Say, it’s the shoulder. Obviously, you can’t block or tackle with a bad shoulder. But you go through the rehab, and you try to suck it up, because you don’t want your teammates thinking you’re soft. Then a week becomes two weeks and then a month and soon the season is over. Everybody knows you didn’t play because of the shoulder injury, but since each player is entitled to a redshirt year, you don’t collect the necessary paperwork.
Three years later, you get a real bad injury in training camp, like a ligament tear. You’re out for the year. You get doctor’s notes saying you’re out for the year. Head coach tells the press you’re out for the year.
A year after that, you want to apply for a sixth year. The NCAA used to grant those based on non-football situations — severe ailments, family problems. In the past decade, it will make an exemption if a player can show he missed two seasons because of injuries.
When it comes to filing the application, the NCAA wants documentation on the freshman season. Guess what? None exists. Because redshirting is almost the norm, nobody was seeking a doctor’s note that says you suffered a season-ending injury. And because you don’t want to appear soft to teammates, there are no published comments from September of that year with you saying: I’m out for the year.
And therein lies the problem.
In my 29 years with The Advertiser, the thing I noticed is that no matter how many times players say, “stop bothering me,” or “why do you keep asking me all of these questions,” inevitably, when their careers are over, they say: Hey, can I get copies of those stories you wrote about me?
And sometimes I want to say: “stop bothering me,” or “why do you keep asking me all of these questions?”
Reality is: I don’t have them.
The only one I saved copies for was Davone Bess, because, 1) I figured he’d be special, and 2) he was always obliging.
The lesson, though, is to always clip out your stories and pictures. And that’s not just for athletes. That’s for everyone.
And it’s especially important for those needing documentation.

Several years ago, a reader berated me for writing too much play-by-play in game stories.
I started to re-read some of the stories, and realized they were kind of dull. So I do very little play-by-play in games stories. Not sure if that’s the way to go, but that’s the way I do it.

The BaseBows story today was fine with a play-by-play for baseball. (Forget who wrote it; I think it was ‘Advertiser Staff’.) I don’t think you need that for football, or the volleyball games you cover. The relationship you build with the players really helps to get a different side of the story, besides the X’s & O’s. It makes the stories interesting.

The Tsaikos do have a Na Koa account into which the money for the bikes were collected. We’d have to ask Don Weir if it is a UH Foundation account in the background, or whether it is only a Na Koa accounting entity.
The Tsaiko account that ST & W-Doc were talking to Alvin & Vince about is a UH Foundation account that can be used to collect funds for whatever we want to direct it toward. The ‘owners’ of the account direct the Foundation in the spending of the funds. We could collect money for softball support, or football equipment, or start a scholarship (although that usually takes mucho kala). I don’t know what Stretch had talked to ? (sorry, forgot the name) about in setting up an account. All in all, it provides a way to make donations that you, the donor, can get a tax deduction for, and it keeps it ‘clean’ (trackable) for NCAA compliance purposes.
HB 2625 has nothing to do with the University of Hawai`i – it “Clarifies various provisions of the condominium property regime law.”
I did a search using the term Cancer Center and found no bill listed in this biennium which cancels its construction. In fact, one bill being heard tomorrow at 6 pm before the House Finance Committee increases the amount of money going into that fund from proposed additional taxes on cigarettes.
Tomorrow morning the Senate Ways and Means Committee will consider HB 2200 HD1 which is the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year which begins July 1, 2010.
In it, there are two CIP budgetary allocations for Ching Field and the Women’s locker room facilities upgrades (approximately $9 million combined) and an additional $11+ million for Aloha Stadium.
CHANGE OF SUBJECT: When we met with the folks at Koa Anuenue, we proposed that the Tsai-ko fund would be for all sports. Each sport also has a designated fund so if you only want to contribute to football or women’s volleyball, then that’s the place to make the donation. Na Koa does work with UH Foundation through the Koa Anuenue office.
The T-Fund would be a very easy way to raise money for specific pieces of training equipment, banners to hang in The Stan, rings or bracelets for WAC tournament winners, summer school tuition drives,or game day meals, etc. It does require a Tsai-ko to be the contact person with Koa Anuenue and to keep accurate records. Both Slugger and I offered separately to take on that responsibility.
Donations directed to more general support of just one particular sport could be made to that sport’s fund. There are currently around 50 of them.
I’ve also volunteered to work with Gwen Nakamura, the band director, to help raise funds to cover their travel expenses to WAC tournaments as well as key away games. We’ve met in person and have talked over the phone several times. She’s very, very interested in working with UHAD as a way to develop strategic friend-raising. Stay tuned for more information over the next couple of weeks.

One of the things Don Weir told me is that we, the Tsaikos, are a ‘booster club’ organization, albeit, an unofficial one, but boosters nonetheless. The NCAA is concerned about activities like our’s to ensure we aren’t breaking the rules re: donations. The way to keep it straight is to put our donations (kala) through a tracked account. That’s all we really need.
Another great addition, I truly couldn’t have explained that far better by myself.
