Seeing red

Today’s three-hour practice will be the final evaluation period as the coaches determine, 1) the now 66-player travel roster to Florida, and 2) which players will redshirt this season.
The key redshirt candidates include slotbacks Ryan Henry and Dustin Blount, wideout Mike Tinoco and outside linebacker Paipai Falemalu.
All four have played well in training camp. But there are four set players for the two slotback positions — seniors Aaron Bain and Michael Washington, and underclassmen Kealoha Pilares and Jon Medeiros.
By redshirting, Henry and Blount — both junior-college transfers — would have an additional year to accumulate college credits toward graduation and to learn the system. After that, they still would have two years of eligibility remaining.
The scenario could change if the Warriors continue to lose running backs to injuries, and Pilares has to move back there.
Tinoco, a JC transfer, is in the same situation as Henry and Blount. The Warriors are deep at wideout, especially since Nate Nasca, who has one year to play one season, has been impressive there since moving from slotback. Nasca will appeal for another season.
Because of injuries, Falemalu has been a No. 2 outside linebacker for most of training camp. He also is a starter on a couple of special teams. But he is a freshman with a redshirt year to burn. Linebackers Adam Leonard, Solomon Elimimian and Tyson Kafentzis are seniors.
A player is eligible to redshirt as long as he does not appear in any game that season.

look wat came off Gainesville Sun from
    Robbie Andreu
    Sun sports writer

    Published: Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 12:38 p.m.
    Last Modified: Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 12:38 p.m.

Wide receiver Percy Harvin practiced for the first time in the preseason Saturday, and there’s a chance he could play in Saturday’s opener against Hawaii, Florida coach Urban Meyer said.

“He didn’t go the whole way, but he practiced,” Meyer said. “There’s a chance.”

Before Saturday, Harvin had been limited to conditioning work while still rehabbing his surgically repaired heel. His status for Saturday’s game will be determined during practice this week.

Quarterback Tim Tebow said it was good to have Harvin back, and that the junior looked even quicker than usual.

“Everyone else has been practicing all camp and they’ve got heavy legs,” Tebow said. “Percy was fresh, so he really looked fast out there today.”

    In the Flo

Flo did little to interrupt Florida’s flow the past few days.

The Gators managed to get in a two-and-a-half hour scrimmage on Friday, then practiced again Saturday. UF did not practice Thursday, but Meyer had said earlier in the week that his team was ahead of schedule and could afford to miss a day.

Meyer said he quickly got his players together for Friday’s practice when there was a break in the weather.

“We guys in the weight room and in the training room,” he said. “We got out there had a great practice.”

    Lots of captains

UF’s five seniors on offense, one on defense and one on special teams are among the 11 players named as captains for the season by Meyer on Saturday.

The senior captains are defensive tackle Javier Estopinan, tight end Cornelius Ingram, tailback Kestahn Moore, wide receiver Louis Murphy, long-snapper James Smith, offensive guard Jim Tart, offensive tackle Jason Watkins and offensive tackle Phil Trautwein.

Florida’s other captains are Tebow, a junior, and junior linebackers Brandon Spikes and Ryan Stamper.

The captains for each game will be determined on a weekly basis.

    This and that

Meyer said Murphy, Riley Cooper and junior college transfer Carl Moore have separated themselves from the pack at wide receiver. … Senior Jonathan Phillips and true freshman Caleb Sturgis will carry their battle for the field-goal kicking job into game week. Meyer said Phillips is slightly ahead of Sturgis at this point, but he’s not ready to name a starter yet. … Meyer does know who his top two safeties are — Major Wright at free and sophomore Ahmad Black at Strong. “Will Hill is our No. 3 safety right now and he plays like it. Sometimes he doesn’t. He’s a very talented guy.”

pftttt!. i cannot wait fo our braddaz go evaluate all deze guyz next week.

    In my book,

Hawaii 2008 will live in history as the state’s greatest year for sports. The Sugar Bowl, Olympics, and Little League Baseball has displayed Hawaii’s great talents. Duke would be proud.

It is only fitting that the University of Hawaii Football program begins this year’s football season at Florida. It was the Hawaii-Nebraska football game at Aloha Stadium that I believe that started it all. If I recall correctly, it was Noga #54 against Remmington #50.

From my far away mainland view, it is great to see Hawaii blossum in front of the world. Hawaii enjoy it, you’ve earned it.

  83. Garret August 23, 2008 11:25 am

Article about Florida’s RBs. Since there was a problem with the blockquotes being hard to read, I’m going to try to bold them.

Welcome to the University of Florida, where averaging 5.6 yards per carry is a failure.

At least that’s the label with which Gators fans branded senior running back Kestahn Moore, last year’s starter who didn’t exactly stink up the joint.

At the end of the day, the problem at running back wasn’t so much summed up by the numbers game as it was a facial expression from Coach Urban Meyer.

One that has magically dissipated this preseason.

“I told you I’m excited; I can’t wait to play them,” Meyer said of this year’s running backs corps. “Before . . . [face shrug] I guess we’ve got to play them. Two years now. You can lead the SEC in offense and not have a great running back.”

Expect a variation of the blueprint Meyer used for his running game at Utah in 2004. That undefeated team had a potent 1-2 combination with running backs Marty Johnson (782 yards) and Quinton Ganther (620 yards), complemented by quarterback Alex Smith, who rushed for 563 yards.

  84. Garret August 23, 2008 11:26 am

Was that easier to read? I’ll try again. This one is about Florida’s OL.

When all else fails, rely on an established offensive line.

UF’s most underrated position is clearly a line that features four returning starters if you count tackle Phil Trautwein, who missed last year with a stress fracture in his foot.

The only non-starter from last year is guard Mike Pouncey, who has star potential alongside center Maurkice Pouncey, his twin.

  86. Garret August 23, 2008 11:30 am

Former Warrior recruit Marve earned the starting job at Miami…and then was suspended for their season opener. Sounds like Miami’s coaches didn’t think that he’d work hard during the offseason if he knew he was suspended for their opening game…that type of unmotivated player probably wouldn’t have been a good fit for Mack and the Warriors.

University of Miami quarterback Robert Marve was told on Friday that he has been suspended for the season opener against Charleston Southern, his former high-school coach and others confirmed Saturday. The suspension stems from an incident last year in Coconut Grove.

However, associates say Marve indicated that coaches reaffirmed their faith in him during the Friday meeting. He was told, according to multiple sources, that he has won the job as starting quarterback. He is expected to start on Sept. 6 against the Florida Gators in Gainesville.

”Robert is upset. Robert’s family is upset. We were having trouble seeing the wisdom of how an incident from last season is being handled,” Eugene Marve, Robert’s father and a former NFL linebacker, told The Miami Herald on Saturday by phone. “But at the end of the day we have to say that his actions created this.

“A swift punishment brings correction, and punishment delayed could bring bitterness. Hopefully, there will be a careful balance of punishment and support.”

Marve was initially charged with two misdemeanors – resisting arrest without violence and minor criminal mischief – after he broke the mirror of a car and briefly tried to evade police on foot last Halloween night in Coconut Grove. Marve became upset after having an argument with his girlfriend and was not aware an officer was nearby. He was not taken to jail.

One person not related to Marve but close to UM said coaches did not want to affect Marve’s motivation level this off-season by telling him sooner about the suspension.

good panning shot of the families crying, hi5 and going crazy at the end. good to see. also plenty shaka’s going around.

Congratulations on a great win by the Waipio Little Leaguers!

Koakane: I think you’re right about how classy our boys are. Three years ago, we were in Pittsburgh to drop off our son at Carnegie Mellon University for his freshman year. We drove 4 hours to Williamsport (and another 4 hours back to Pittsburgh) to catch the Ewa Beach team in one of their pool play games. They were clearly the favorites of the crowd. You couldn’t find any souvenirs that had “Ewa Beach” on it. Completely sold out. The parents were just having a great time cheering their kids along. Just made us feel proud to be from Hawaii.

  161. A-House August 23, 2008 1:19 pm

“How long have you been rooting for the Skins? “Oh, man, ever since I was a little kid,” Brown says. “Ever since Carolina was Redskins territory. Hell, it’s still Redskins territory. Just look around.”

He’s not wrong — the fans who are here early enough to watch warm-ups are so primarily burgundy-and-gold (and the now-ubiquitous green-and-black Hawaii #15) that the Panthers are actually booed when they take the field. And all the fans I ask also say that they’ve just maintained their loyalties despite Carolina getting its own team.”

  187. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 2:15 pm

Skins get their FIRST first down of the quarter and then everything goes to pieces… QB fumble…

  188. Mike August 23, 2008 2:19 pm

Kudos (and thanks) to Kelli for standing up for her HA colleagues. It’s a meaningful statement for a young journalist who isn’t even part of the Guild yet to recognize and support the fight against corporate greed that our union members have undertaken. This is the kind of gesture of solidarity that wins respect among peers.

  189. Mrs. A-House August 23, 2008 2:20 pm

CONGRATULATIONS ! ! Waipio Little League Team !

Job’s not done yet. Rejoice !…enjoy ! …revel in the moment of victory, but continue to focus on THE big game tomorrow.

Ho boy, A-House ohana is busting with pride and happiness at the come-from-behind victory ! The humble yet tenacious character of each of the players was so endearing and heart-warming to watch as the post-game interviewer asked them whether they wanted to say Hi! to friends and family back home. It was so cute to see them look at one another with serious faces as if to say, “we’ll save it for after tomorrow’s victory.” The team then turned to the families and supporters in the stands and tipped their caps and waved politely…no raucus or out-of-control emotional outbursts. So unlike teams from other regions. This team has poise and quiet confidence that belie children at this age. Coaches and parents have done a splendid job in teaching good sportsmanship, manners and courtesy and respect for their opponents and the sport. So proud of them !

    Koakane –

Howzit to you, too. Thanks for the invite but we’ll be cheering the team on from the windward side tomorrow morning… and we do make a good deal of noise.

    Alnbama –

It’s great that you’ll be joining us at the Golden Coral, 8032 International Drive. Remember now, it’s on Friday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 pm. Starting to pack for the trip. How about you. Can you believe it ! Almost exactly 7 days from now, we’ll be in the heat of battle. IMUA WARRIORS!

  190. Kekoa August 23, 2008 2:25 pm

Pomai ~ Need Season posters up your way? Send me your home mailing address.

I went thru 200 Warrior FB posters, and over 100 of both the Wahine VB & Soc ones just around my ceded lands, Kingdom of Hawaii. Kona restock on Monday at UH.

BTW – Anyone seen the Wahine Soccer team posters? Jason…you gotta check these fine lookin’ young ladies! Woo Hoo! Be still my heart!

  191. alnbama August 23, 2008 2:28 pm

Hey Mrs. A-house it will be my pleasure to sit with some of you tsaiko’s. I am just thrilled that the Warriors are playing games in the southeast. Looking forward to Mr. Donovan scheduling more SEC teams, or any teams in this area. Will be in Orlando on Wen., have an idea where the Golden Corall is, so should be no problem getting there.

  192. Mrs. A-House August 23, 2008 2:33 pm

    BTW – Homey

That pistol of a little guy, Christian “C-Boy” Donahue, reminds us a-house guys of you, Homey. With his straight-bill baseball cap and his serious well-mannered responses to questions…ho, so endearing…less emphasis on the “endearing”, more emphasis on the “little”…nah, j/k.

  193. FloridaTed August 23, 2008 2:39 pm

Kekoa- Yes. Still have a bunch of posters waiting at the AD office – 1/2 a ream of FB and VB posters and schedule cards…

But a few for personal use are good too 😉

I was trying to mess with getting a streaming video- and crashed my laptop.

Skins are floundering and Jason Taylor is hurt – his knee.
    13-0 Panthers.

“No rhythm at all offensively, I’d like to see them go into shotgun!”

  197. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 2:46 pm

    Skins offensive line is porous.
Taylor is carted away in big pain.

  198. d1島: August 23, 2008 2:47 pm

    Great Afternoon All.
…and it truly is a great afternoon!

    Still posting from Oregon.
Was watching #2 son practice while the Waipio team was pulling off their miraculous victory. The last report anyone had was when they were trailing.
Amazing to read about the comeback.
    Good luck tomorrow.
We will be flying back home while the game is going on so 🙁 we cannot meet up for the Wessai BCC in Mililani.

Also sad that things not working out and that we not going have the WB for the season opener.

Gotta esme now and head back for practice #2 for #2.

    laterssss…..

  199. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 2:48 pm

Sonny Jurgensen is trying to be nice in talking about Jason Campbell but he sees the deficiencies. 🙁

You and I know who he wants to see in the field….

  200. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 2:49 pm

    Hi d1 !!

    Carolina scores again.
    20-0

  201. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 2:50 pm

Sonny has “seen enough of this adversity struggle”.

Right knee sprain on Jason Taylor. Getting xrays- will not return.

  202. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 2:55 pm

    27 -0 Carolina

  203. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 2:56 pm

    Passing CP/AT YDS TD INT
    J. Campbell 6/9 39 0 0
    J. Delhomme 7/14 86 0 1

“What time does the plane leave?”
    “Not soon enough”.

  204. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 3:01 pm

    Very sad.
Will be back if/when Colt comes in.

  205. Kapahulu August 23, 2008 3:04 pm

You can follow the Redskins game now on the internet at redskins.com. Then go to gamecenter and play by play. Right now Redskins down in the 2nd quarter 27-0. Jason Campbell sacked 4 times already.

  206. LizKauai [Believer] August 23, 2008 3:07 pm

    34-0 Carolina

    hmmm
I wonder who the QB will be when they come back in the 3Q?

  207. Hawaiianbod August 23, 2008 3:08 pm

Kelli – I can’t agree more with Mike’s comment. Tsaikos always have each other’s back.
    Atta girl!

  208. oxtail soup August 23, 2008 3:09 pm

    34-0 Carolina

    Bummer…
The Redskins O-line isn’t protecting the QB and the defense is missing a lot of tackles

I am only a few years removed from “da lolo keeds” days but I find that I am getting less and less tolerant of “C**P”.

What happened to the updates? Is Colt in yet?

  223. Mclovin August 23, 2008 4:01 pm

one of the commentators on comcast said he thinks colt will come in 4th quarter. I guess we have to wait and see.

  224. chawan_cut August 23, 2008 4:02 pm

41-3. i just tuned in. can’t hear here in pearlridge. not sure how bad the redskins offense is or if its the panthers defense. maybe they’ll put devine in just to continue the slaughter.

  225. Hawaiianbod August 23, 2008 4:05 pm

    Punahou – 34
    Waianae – 7 (half)

UH DE recruit Kimo Makaula, played TE and caught a TD pass

  226. Ralph August 23, 2008 4:08 pm

Koakane call me or e mail me for sunday…i”m in Mililani, meet you guys there, if there is a change of plans, do call. If you meet at Nancy’s at 8:30, then most like you’ll be in Mililani by 9 – expecting Hawaiian time dragging the butt

  227. Mclovin August 23, 2008 4:11 pm

panthers just scored a fieldgoal. Redskins punt returner fumbled at the 20 yrd line and panthers recovered fumble

  228. Jason August 23, 2008 4:17 pm

They were just talking about college’s replay vs. the NFL’s replay, and how the NCAA replay officials are so good at reviewing every play. But I wonder how that will be affected by the new 40-second clock. Will there be less time for the replay official to review every play, and could that lead to more challenges?

  229. Mclovin August 23, 2008 4:19 pm

Panther just scored a field goal. Score is 47 to 3. Colt is now in.

  230. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 23, 2008 4:20 pm

  236. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 23, 2008 4:30 pm

dang- Colt takes a hit and turns over on downs on their31.

  237. Jason August 23, 2008 4:34 pm

I’m listening to Joe Theismann on the online feed, I like what he’s been saying. Honest, fair criticism and compliments on his part. I miss having him on national TV, he was always one of my favorites.

  238. bighilofan2 August 23, 2008 4:38 pm

Who like bet how many times Mark Bennett and Darolyn Lendio wen talk this past week about how to move this fiasco along? You think its either or their top priority.

Nope, we got bigga things for do, sir. We gotta worry about planning for the future. 641 million dollars to ask the Legislature for.

  240. chawan_cut August 23, 2008 4:43 pm

so who watched the whole game? was it zorn’s playcalling? the players sucking? or is carolina that good?

  241. chawan_cut August 23, 2008 4:44 pm

oh, and can’t blame this one on colt. they put him in the end when it was long over. they more or less had him hand off the ball to get the clock to zero.

  242. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 23, 2008 4:45 pm

    Passing CP/AT YDS TD INT
    T. Collins 9/15 79 0 0
    C. Brennan 6/12 53 0 0
    J. Campbell 6/10 39 0 0

    They sucked.

  243. Mclovin August 23, 2008 4:46 pm

The 1st string o-line really sucked and campbell didn’t have much time to get his passes off. Commentators were saying that campbell was slow in getting rid of ball. They also mentioned that the o-line coaches daughter died of cancer and he had to be in phoenix. The 1st string defense secondary also sucked and let panther make big plays

  244. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 23, 2008 4:47 pm

I recorded some of the audio when Colt started playing.

Even in the 4thQ and with a loss, he still lit up the people!

you know, some of the guyz have made mistakes, and they’ve been humble about how they see themselves. Thats why you don’t hear me scramblin for the head of any Associate AD. I kinda like them all, so long as they’re meaning Jim Donovan well. Act well, get treated well I always say.

But Slowdownski is the last stray. So –

    Tom Mui,

come Monday I’m calling Rodney Tam and the Contractor’s Board, find out who was the last attorney before Rodney. Maybe he’s in private practice, I can ask him questions. Will get back to you about this contractor’s specialty license.

sounding more and more like a bunch of recently made up shibai to me.

Pics from last summer? I don’t think I knew you last summer. Unless you mean September. I don’t think we took any pictures, at least I don’t remember taking any.

Anyway…Brew, baby. It’s done! Go check your email.

When they determine that Sadowski did indeed use his position on the board to try to eliminate competition for personal gain — a definite conflict of interest. I hope they ban him or any entity he is tied into from any future State or City contracts indefinitely.

  265. Thomas Mui August 23, 2008 8:20 pm

    BigHiloFan2:

Will get back to you about this contractor’s specialty license.

As you know, the specialty license for landscaping has been used as an OK for laying of synthetic turf.

The Board is trying to make a specialty license like the C-68FF mandatory for the laying of synthetic turf and no longer permit specialty landscape license people able to lay down synthetic turf. So where I am coming from is was C-68FF ever made a specialty license to begin with. It isn’t listed (as far as I can find) in that Hawaii webpage listing specialty license.

Might ask the history of how long landscape licensed people were doing synthetic turf. I suspect this may have gone back to the time when astroturf was used at the stadium which you may remember was before they put down the present turf there.

    Good evening to all…

Finally got computer sort of fixed…

SteveM: funny noise was coming from the DVD writer component..I disconnected it and now I can boot up…had to open up the tower to figure out the noise.

James is there still room for Genji’s? I am trying to figure out schedule. Brie has practice that a.m. at 7:30.

Have a safe trip to all going to the SWAMP!

    Congratulations to the Waipio LL!

Bighilofan and Tom Mui…good job on followup with the Ching/Cooke field. So sad that it is taking so long with so much drama. Seems to be a lot of bending rules.

    Go Warriors!

just got through watching the “taped” game of the us nat’l little league championships.

wow. wow, what guts those local boys.

can’t wait to watch the game tomw.

oh, btw. hats off to the entire team, staff, and parents for exemplifying what the aloha spirit and great sportsmanship is all about.

and how about longtimeuhfan’s grandnephew, trevor ling who came in the fifth to stop the bleeding and calmly shutdown the top of the order in the sixth to record the win.

For those going to the Wessai Chaptah BCC at Mililani, I checked with the Mililani Golf Club Restaurant personnel. They said it is all 1st come 1st serve, they are not taking reservations. I would suggest you come early. Let’s all try to be there by 08:30 AM.

Koakane, I plan to come straight there from Kapolei to Mililani. (See the link to the map)

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=mililani+golf+club,+mililani,+hi+96789&ie=UTF8&z=15&ll=21.454666,-158.017387&spn=0.022168,0.034418&t=h&om=1&iwloc=A

As we all arrive there, see what each of us can do to grab an extra table or chair. If we all wear our Tsaiko black Tees, they may think we are “family.” Well, in a way we are!

C’mon, get those lungs tuned up for the BIG game and let’s show our support for the newly crowned U.S. World Series Champions, The Boys of Waipio! HOO-RAH!

  274. Garret August 23, 2008 9:37 pm

    Notes from the Miami papers.

Will rookie receivers Davone Bess and Arena Football alumnus Anthony Armstrong continue to make plays, convincing management that they don’t need to scour the waiver wire for better talent. I suspect the Dolphins will carry seven receiver on the 53-man roster and the practice squad. Right now they have Derek Hagan, Ted Ginn Jr., Ernest Wilford and Davone Bess as locks.

Will Boomer Grigsby do enough to hold onto the spot on the 53-man roster he’s wrestled from Reagan Mauia because of his versatility. Fullback is clearly a position the Dolphins need an upgrade in, and don’t be surprised if the Dolphins add one that’s available on the waiver wire.

  275. Garret August 23, 2008 9:39 pm

    Note from another Miami paper.

They will be locks (RB Ricky Williams), long shots (CB Will Billingsley) and ones with no chance of making it (LB Maurice Fountain). There are Cinderellas from faraway places (WR Davone Bess of Hawaii) and feel-good stories (25-year-old rookie Anthony Armstrong) vying for the same spot.

    FB: Boomer Grigsby.
Last one out: Reagan Mauia. The incumbent at fullback has dropped too many passes during camp and simply doesn’t have Grigsby’s balls skills or fluidity. Grigsby also loves to blow people up in special teams.

WR: Derek Hagan, Ted Ginn Jr., Ernest Wilford, Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess.
Last one out: Anthony Armstrong. Some have suggested Wilford get the ax, but he’s not dropping the ball like he did the first two weeks of camp and has the size (6-4, 218) and experience to body up on a defender and get open on key third downs. Armstrong, an ex-Arena Football League player and possibly the Dolphins’ best deep threat, is quite a find and a lock for the eight-man practice squad.

Interesting how the Malaysian tree shrew basically lives on an alcoholic nectar (the equivalent of 9 beers per day for a human!) and never gets drunk. It is also funny how the different articles I’ve read customize the alcohol analogy based on their audience–NPR mentions this is the equivalent of 9 glasses of wine per day, other sites mentions it is the equivalent of 9 beers per day.

Pretty cool that this inventor has actually made a jet pack that lifted his teenage son about 3 feet off the ground and kept him in the air for 45 seconds, far longer than other jet packs. His jet pack is supposed to be able to have people fly much higher off the ground for 30 miles at 60 mph. He plans to sell them for $100k each and if it actually works and if it gets in some popular movie (like a James Bond movie), then I think it will sell quite well to the wealthy.

I’m not sure what you would call a C-68FF contractors license. It exists, and its scope of work covers the installation of synthetic turf, but it does not appear it is required by law to install synthetic turf.

  310. momotaro August 23, 2008 11:40 pm

    bhf2,
There will not be any temporary injunctions. DCCA has exclusive jurisdiction over appeals and work is stayed until a DCCA decision, absent a substantial interest determination.

    Al,

Most of oldies came from a friend’s record collection which he purchased when he saw the entertainers on TV, channel 10, I think.
The other songs (Hawaiian, musicals like Phantom of the Opera, etc) are from actual CDs purchased by me or family members.

  359. Committed Road Warrior August 24, 2008 1:05 am

    WarriorMojo,

If the six folks from the SportsHawaii board don’t “pull an Esme” (***did I say that right? I’m still trying to get used to the colloquialisms of the Tsai-ko nation), perhaps the charter bus ride may still be an option? That is, if Stretch is willing to open it up for those folks? It would surely bring the cost p/p down, but would it be within a financially reasonable range?

If that was the case(wrong number) then wouldn’t that make his complaint null and void?? LOL
