Second half begins

With the extra week of practice because of yesterday’s bye, the Rainbow Warriors already have implemented the game-plan basics for this Saturday’s game against Colorado State. The Warriors will make adjustments through the week.

For the first time in a month, all four quarterbacks — Taylor Graham, Sean Schroeder, Ikaika Woolsey and Jeremy Higgins — are healthy. Tight end Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson, who had an MCL injury, also appears to be healthy.

The extra week of practice probably helped earn more playing time for receiver Kwamane Bowens and cornerback Anthony Pierce.

The players are off today, but the coaches will meet this afternoon.

  14. Former UH Athlete October 20, 2013 9:41 am

Nick Foles is stinking it up for Phily today…. Just got gifted on a replay overturning a Foles int.

  15. Former UH Athlete October 20, 2013 9:46 am

Yeah, Nick Foles is stinking badly. He’s not finding the open receivers and missing them when he does target them.

Maybe a Matt Barkley appearance coming soon???

Not too many people predicted a 10-3 slopfest

Hey! Matt Barkley warming up (Foles went to locker room).

Colorado state handily beat Wyoming at home. don’t believe that CS is a pushover. it will likely be a high scoring close game.

  28. Stephen Tsai October 20, 2013 11:49 am

I think Harold Moleni and, maybe, Craig Cofer are the only true tight ends.
The other guys are motion backs. I think there are times when Pu‘u-Robinson aligns wide.

  29. Stephen Tsai October 20, 2013 11:50 am

A lot of times the alignment isn’t the real starting point. It’s a way to check defensive coverages. It’s nothing new. When somebody moves, it’s telling to see who moves or doesn’t move.

  30. kev-1 October 20, 2013 12:14 pm

ST . . . what’s your straight up opinion on the QB situation? I appreciate some of what SS has to offer, but if TG is healthy, I feel like he should get the start.

Does the starter lose his job to an injury? I mean, YES, SS has made big plays and led a couple of unsuccessful comebacks, but there is a lot to be desired also. I was intrigued with Coach Chow’s response when the question was posed by Kekaula on Inside Access. By judging Chow’s reaction, he had seemed to have thought SS is the guy. After Kekaula asked if the starter loses the job because of injury, Chow said something to the effect of “since you put it like that Robert, I’ll have to look at it.” (not a direct quote)

What is your take? Do you have an off the fence answer? Not looking for the “I can see all three getting some time” type of an answer.

  31. Warrior Dave October 20, 2013 12:55 pm

    ST,

Wonder if FSU can get a BCS bid? More importantly, will members get a share??

Glad the team had the bye week. It doesn’t look like roster size necessarily correlates to wins and losses, but 2012 and 2013 roster size are smaller than I remembered.

I was just looking back at some old posts….

How about building a stadium at Kakaako Park?!

We’ll have the only college oceanfront stadium in the NCAA!!! Now if that doesn’t brand and identify Hawaii, I don’t know what will!!!

When I see Waianae HS football field, I’m still in awe of how this beautiful and breathtaking this oceanfront field is!

Parking structures could be built to support this stadium, which is definitely needed with all of the new buildings scheduled to be developed in the area (NOTE: These parking spaces could be rented out during eventless days to help revenue). In addition, hopefully a lot of new population density in the area could just walk to the stadium. Stadium would also be on the rail route for West Side residents, short commute for UH students, business district for advertising…etc.

    Just imagine….

#23, my guess why you can’t post from your work computer is probably not related to anything that ST can control, but probably more related to something that your computer or network environment at work is not able to do.

  45. boolakanaka October 20, 2013 6:11 pm

Aloha! All the different time zones have me getting up super early here in the UK.

Much of this week’s discussion was focused around the financial viability of our sport’s program at UH, and specifically around football. With that in mind, the credit rating agency Moody’s just released an all together interesting report this week on college sports programs.

According to a report issued Friday from Moody’s Investors Service, a vast majority — 90 percent — of college sports programs operate at a loss and require subsidies from the colleges, Moody’s noted. Between 2008 and 2012, university subsidies funneled to sports programs increased by a median of 25 percent, according to the report. During roughly the same period, state spending on higher education declined by 28 percent, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities concluded in March, often resulting in higher tuition.

Along those same lines, USA Today analysis published in July found that only 23 of 228 athletic departments at NCAA Division I public schools earned enough cash to cover their expenses in 2012. Schools spend more on each athlete than they do on each student, Think Progress reported in January, and money for sports teams is more likely to come from school subsidies if the program is not profitable.

Dennis M. Gephardt, Moody’s vice president, noted in the report that part of the reason universities spend so much is because they “pursue high-profile sports programs for the opportunity to increase brand recognition, student demand, and donor support.”

The growing commercial success of Division I sports is likely to lead to increased spending from universities on their athletic programs, Moody’s said, as well as “costly improvements to their athletic facilities” in efforts to join new conferences.

  46. Shakingmyhead October 20, 2013 6:34 pm

46…..I find this post troublesome…..not only do student athletes get exploited but so do educational institutes. Who is slurping at this money trough? Coaches making millions, TV networks, NFL using it as a farm system etc. I know some will point out the scholarship issue and there is some truth to this but the huge commitment in terms of time and physical damage to the athletes body hardly makes it a grand bargain in my mind. I say pay football coaches no more than the highest paid professor at any institution and things will start to make sense. Failling this start to pay the players and quit this charade. I don’t like Johnny Menziel but find it disgusting that he cannot sell his own autograph but others can cash in big time from his presence.

  47. cavewarrior October 20, 2013 7:03 pm

Denver-Indy game: will be interested if Denver #99 Vickerson gets fined by the league for (apparently?) intentionally twisting Samson Satele’s knee during the extra point play. Put Samson out for the rest of the game.
