Senior slotback Aaron Bain is the rare player who does not have a tattoo. He mused that as a walk-on, he couldn’t afford one. Bain, who is scheduled to receive a football scholarship next month, has worked this summer as a counselor at a youth detention center in Makiki.

Leon Wright-Jackson, who went home to Seattle for a few days, is back and working out daily. Wright-Jackson and Daniel Libre enter training camp as the co-No. 1 running backs.

To help prepare for the season, Wright-Jackson bought a pair of Under Armour cleats. UA is UH’s sponsor this year. The players won’t receive their UA cleats until training camp.

Kealoha Pilares, however, said he feels comfortable with his Nike shoes.

Jake Heun is expected to serve as a powerback in short-yardage situations. Heun was a skilled linebacker in JC β€” the “dark side,” he calls the defense β€” but he appears set to play offense this season.

It’s going to be interesting to see our rushing totals this year compared to previous years. I really like the stable of running backs we’ve got!

  5. HiFlyer July 4, 2008 2:52 am

Looks like LWJ has UA shoes, I wonder if he bought them on his own?

  6. Stretch July 4, 2008 2:54 am

ST – you should really be going to sleep before you burn your ala’s again. Have fun waking up early for the Parade.

  7. Ralph July 4, 2008 2:54 am

99club last year was a down year in rushing but with Nate and the rest of the RB’s we had nearly 1000 yards and maybe more…add the pass reception Rb’s did well. last year the guys went down to easily, reminded me of Bass from a few years ago…

  8. Stretch July 4, 2008 2:55 am

BTW – it is will also be a good opportunity on Sunday for the people interested in the evil twins to check them out. I heard they will be standing in line for a Colt autograph

  9. HiFlyer July 4, 2008 2:57 am

Stephen, you must be psychic or is it tpsychic.

  10. Ralph July 4, 2008 2:57 am

there is so much tape that it shouldn’t matter which shoes they are wearing..I don’t see a problem with rolling with UA because the tape locks every part of the shoe and foot in place making it one unit

  11. Ralph July 4, 2008 3:06 am

Eh Stretch how come you and Wreck are calling them the evil twins…..

  12. Ralph July 4, 2008 3:08 am

have the twins been standing near Koakane and James tonight…I hope the Pope doesn’t find out about their affiliation with Damien HS, he might rescind the canonization

  13. Ralph July 4, 2008 3:11 am

  15. 99club July 4, 2008 3:16 am

I’m guessing they tape each other’s ankles…or are there trainers available to do it? Good thing either way.

    Stretch-
Evil twins? Heh, heh. They’re too small to be evil. Sweet too.

  16. 99club July 4, 2008 3:19 am

St. Damien. I like the sound of it! Should happen in February I’m heard. Will Damien start playing the “…Saints come marching in..” song at their games next year? Why not?

  17. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 3:19 am

They’re pretty much on their own.
    They tape their own ankles.
    Adam Leonard brings the water.

  18. Pomai July 4, 2008 3:21 am

  19. Pomai July 4, 2008 3:26 am

  20. 99club July 4, 2008 3:27 am

    Thanks.

    Pomai-
Good morning…sorry about your dog and the vet bills. Our “pound puppy” has cost us a few hundred in the last 6 months mainly from eating things outside that he shouldn’t have.

    Goin’ for a jog…back later (I hope!)

  22. Ralph July 4, 2008 3:30 am

those tapes are expensive, okay for the ankles because its comfortable, but if you taping the socks and shoes, got to find a cheaper sub…to bad masking tape to sticky, it binds anything with good wrapping strength.

  23. Ralph July 4, 2008 3:30 am

Pomai anyone mention that you look like lucky luck

Dedicated guys! Can’t wait to see them on the field. Someone needs to show Heun how to make a shaka instead of horns. He’s a big back.

If Central Arkansas comes here to play in September 2009, it’s gonna feel like paradise to them here since it much more humid there.

  30. MeiLing July 4, 2008 5:05 am

Whoo-hoo. Another day closer to kick-off. Yeah!

Kudos to Coach Mack for expanding UH’s camp from what was offered last year! That is a great thing for Hawaii’s youth and will be a HUGE boost to UH’s recruiting efforts in the short-term and long-term (since he’s having a camp for the younger players also). People here know I’ve been strongly in favor of more camps and I’m happy that Coach Mack is exceeding expectations and doing the right thing for the program once again!

I know that the news was in the Advertiser yesterday, but I wanted to make sure I commented on this before I forgot.

  36. Garret July 4, 2008 5:37 am

Happy 4th of July to everyone! I hope that everyone has a great time today.

  37. Garret July 4, 2008 5:38 am

HF in the news! Funny thing is that he’s setting deadlines for himself now…wonder if he’ll actually make his internal deadlines?

Herman Frazier, in the process of moving back to Phoenix, said he has a self-imposed deadline to decide on his next job within 30 days.

The former Arizona State track star and longtime college and U.S. Olympic Committee administrator said he is talking with two “institutions of higher learning.” He is cautious in discussing whether he is among the candidates to become USA Track chief executive officer.

“You hear rumors that they want to talk to me,” Frazier said. “You hear rumors that people say you should move into that position. That’s not always the case. Is it a good fit for them, and is it a good fit for me? That’s got to work on both sides.

“At this point their search people are still working, and that’s pretty much all I can say about it. I’ve had some discussions with some people about it; that’s all I’ll say.”

A search committee independent of the USA Track board of directors is looking for a new CEO to replace Craig Masback, who left in January for an executive position with Nike. The original goal to make a hire June 1 has come and gone.

Frazier, 53, under pressure for several issues, including the departure of football coach June Jones, agreed to a contact buyout with the University of Hawaii, where he was athletic director for 5 1/2 years, in January. He interviewed for athletic director at the University of Miami soon after leaving Hawaii, a job that went to Kirby Hocutt of Ohio University.

Frazier is buying a house in Ahwatukee.

  38. Garret July 4, 2008 5:40 am

Navy is sure filling up its schedule spots quickly. They just scheduled another Texas team.

The Navy football team will play Rice on Oct. 10, 2009 at Rice Stadium, the school confirmed today.

  39. Garret July 4, 2008 5:41 am

This rumor I think has been denied already…

Agent Bus Cook has been yapping a lot over the past several months regarding the future of his star client, Brett Favre.

Most recently, we heard that Cook had been telling people that Brett still wants to play. (Two days later, it was widely reported that Brett is telling people that Brett still wants to play.)

We’re now hearing that Cook is privately saying that Favre wants to play for the . . . . drum roll, please . . . oh, wait, it’s in the headline . . . Carolina Panthers.

We don’t know why Favre is eyeing Carolina. Maybe he thinks that it’s the best place for him to step in as the starter, notwithstanding the presence of Jake Delhomme, and have a chance to win. Or maybe Favre wants to play for a time that’s fairly close to his home in Mississippi β€” and that will play three division road games in that same general area as well.

I wonder if this Minnesota transfer will get to play vs. UH? It sounds like he has a lot of talent and will have the speed to be a dangerous DE.

University of Cincinnati football coach Brian Kelly first met Alex Daniels in September, before the start of fall quarter.

He knew Daniels had been dismissed from Minnesota’s football program a few months earlier. He also knew about his potential as a football player.

After examining Daniels’ situation and talking with officials from Minnesota, UC athletic director Mike Thomas reached the same conclusion and on Thursday cleared Daniels to play at UC this fall.

According to a July 18, 2007, Associated Press story, junior Dominic Jones was accused of having sex with an 18-year-old woman who was “physically helpless” after a night of binge drinking at a campus apartment in early April of that year.

Investigators said Daniels used his cell phone to film Jones having sex with the woman. Hennepin County (Minn.) attorney Mike Freeman said that Daniels, and Minnesota players E.J. Jones and Keith Massey also had sex with the woman earlier that night.

Thomas said reinstating Daniels was not an easy decision. During the past week and a half, in addition to meeting with Daniels, he consulted with officials from Minnesota.

During two years at Minnesota, Daniels played in 23 games at linebacker and running back. In the Gophers’ 2006 season opener, he rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns against Kent State.

Kelly said the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Daniels, who was ranked the 11th-best athlete in the nation by Rivals.com after he led Brookhaven to a state title in 2004, probably will be tried at defensive end at UC.

But first Daniels has to get healthy.

  42. Garret July 4, 2008 5:46 am

Amazing that Kansas’ new facility has a meeting room that is just for scout team players.

Scout-team players have their own meeting room.

Oh, that’s not a main attraction of the 80,000-square-foot Anderson Family Football Complex on the southwest side of Kansas’ Memorial Stadium.

That could be the massive weight room with custom-built work stations, a locker room large enough to land a small aircraft or coach Mark Mangino’s corner office overlooking the field that would be the envy of any corporate CEO.

But the idea of giving practice players their own space speaks to perhaps the best part of the $31 million project.

Heun looks awesome. Somebody give him some Travis Sims tapes. Needs to work on his shaka though.

  45. wafan July 4, 2008 5:55 am

I have wondered in the past if Stevens’ life would have been different had he actually gone to the UH. F v Appen actually tried to get him. But when the high school coach checked the UH program and stats he said that Stevens already knew how to lose (our team was winless or close to it at that time) and that he needed to learn to win.

Or, perhaps it was all for the better that he did not.

  46. bighilofan2 July 4, 2008 6:00 am

i love hot dogs, but not like them!

  50. wafan July 4, 2008 6:14 am

We need a Tsai-ko or three to teach the newbies how to do a shaka. Those guys are getting confused about their fingers. Is Huen practicing for the Vili look-a-like contest?

Has Mr. Tsai been relegated to shooting side, back and foot shots? The one with Bain looks like he is saying, “Take the photo at your own risk.”

Finally, I should have asked Koakane for his autograph before. Now that he is in the background the price just went up. Geez. Have to buy ticket, or what?

    oooh, a tie.
an “eatoff!” fastest to eat 5.
i don’t understand the rules. do you have to swallow? or just have it in your mouth? its over.
they just named chesnut the champion. i think his style of eating is better for shoving as much in your mouth quickly without swallowing. kobayashi’s method is more for long term eating. i’m sure there’ll be tons of replay coverage on espn tonight..

    Re-Coach Mack trip to Samoa

Reading another site, and the catalyst of the discussion was that “last night Papa Leahey gives Coach Mack a yellow card”. The argument centered on Leahey chastising Coach Mack for going to Samoa and following and tagging along too closely with Coach Jones.

To all the cynics out there, including Leahey, remember the trip was more so a good will mission. As ambassadors to college football, both schools, SMU and UH, had a few members of their coaching staffs along with a few current and former NFL UH alums traveling to Samoa to what…run a academy (football camp). And to pass out a few medical supplies. This was their objective, mainly to help with the kids. And to promote the game of football. With five college scholarships awarded it also planted the seeds in motivating the remaining kids to get better.

The June Jones foundation along with Coach Mack and Coach Jones should be commended for their generosity for their time, teaching and underwriting the costs of the trip. The impressions they leave on the community and to this writer is that they truly in their hearts have a love for helping the football impoverished so maybe one day not only UH or SMU yields the successes of the Samoa players entering the collegiate ranks. But all of college football. And maybe the NFL, too. This is good. And not a bad working relationship between the two coaches.

For people, especially people who’s commentary we listen too, like Leahey, look at the overall picture and rethink your statement. The impropriety as you see it, especially how you identify it as Coach Mack should be weening himself away from Coach Jones because their “fishing from the same pond” or recruiting the same area arguments are ridiculous statements. In view of the trip to Samoa and in view of all the good that comes out of it, I don’t think the actions of Coach Mack and his relationship with Coach Jones will handicap his ability to recruit against Coach Jones. The trade off, anyway, of all the goodwill, especially the charitable golf tournaments generating monies for the Hawaii community and the football camps in Samoa has a far reaching affect and impact…anyhow… than to cry about *if* Coach Mack might lose out to Coach Jones in the future recruiting wars.

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Man, I love those pictures of our guys. If they’ll play half as good as they look, we’re in for a wild ride. I have a strong feeling that our running game will shock a few people this year, return to running glory?

I love and hate the unknown about our team at the same time, but it sure makes fall camp highly interesting.

Every body have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend. Happy birthday, USA.

  76. d1shima [sez:] July 4, 2008 7:50 am

    bhf2,

I gonna speak my mine on dis one privately. private, isn’t dat a good ting….

I guess you like to work “in close” and dats fine.

Fo’ me, I think it’s kinda distressing that this guy was “dropped off” at an UNSUPERVISED workout by a coach (who, in the players’ eyes, should be a trusted individual) to be amongst players who would probably only see the “NFL star” aspect of this guy.
I doubt that any of them would have been aware of the in depth stuff from the Seattle Times report on Stevens and certainly when he was “dropped off” at the practice field no one was handing out a dossier of the guy.
I hear wat you saying about friends console friends in hard times but as a coach, he get his responsibility to the players to set an example for them to follow. He is showing the players that it’s OK to “hang-out” with dis guy, he’s cool. How is he supposed to then counsel them about the whole “guilt by association” thing later on? Stevens, by my count, get implications in four felony activities: aggravated assault, aggravated rape, leaving the scene and possession. What if one of the players start hanging out with somebody like that? What that coach get fo’ say then?
I not judging da coach’s character at this point, but just questioning his judgement in this instance.
Fo’ me, I no can jus’ wait ’til next Thursday fo’ say something. Sorry.

  77. jm2375 July 4, 2008 7:51 am

*yawn* Good morning gangee. Happy 4th of July! Wanted to sleep in but forgot to put out the rubbish can last night and da truck wen wake me up.

Congrats ST. TIme does fly when you’re having fun. πŸ˜€
I’d also like to thank you for posting daily. I don’t think anyone else does. I’m not sure what we Tsaikos would do without our daily fix.

  78. bighilofan2 July 4, 2008 7:58 am

Ahem, so to make yu realize dis is fo real, I’m gonna go to the Hawaii County Council and get my frenleees to make da certificate foah

COACH GREGORY McMACKIN. It’m tinkin it’ll read

There are many coaches who volunteer their time and talent to helping Others, including (that other former coach’s name omitted). πŸ˜€ They do not ask for compensation nor do they seek fame. They do it because it was the right thing to do. And they did it with sensitivity and compassion.

Greg McMackin is one such coach (along wit dat odda coach whuze name is omitted). He is a outstanding volunteer and exemplifies the meaning of “Kahiau” by giving genreously with his heart without expectation of return,

On behalf of the citizens of the Big Island, the Members of the Hawaii County Council extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to Coach Greg McMackin for his exceptional service to the University and People of Hawaii. We commend you and congragulate you for going to Samoa (wit da odda guy whuze name is omitted) πŸ˜€

    howz dat?????

  79. wafan July 4, 2008 8:03 am

Without our daily fix there would be a whole lot of crazied UH Warrior Tsai-ko’s running around looking for information. Just any tid-bit of news.

Coach Mack would have to open the Coach Mack Clinic for the many deranged Tsai-kotics around the world. The treatment there would be 24/7 — re-runs of past games, one-on-one counseling by coaches and players, and, of course, non-stop feedings.

Its a tie! A five dog playoff. Hot dogs that is.

  81. FloridaTed July 4, 2008 8:07 am

    Tsai-Meister,

Congrats, wow, 27 years, that is a long time, but I’m sure, looking back, it might as well have been the blink of an eye. For certain, in your business, that’s true longevity. Looking back on life, I’m always amazed that the only real thing we have are thoughts and their results, either looking forward or backwards. The present doesn’t really exist, it’s like a constant little brook running over ones hand.

That’s why writers are so important, they’re the ones who record the thoughts of humanity, recording our collective and fleeting consciousness, preserving them to be something tangable.

Creating this blog is a great example, without it all our thoughts would just fly around, fading into the eather of space, but here it is recorded and creating substance.

For that, we all thank you.

  82. 99club July 4, 2008 8:07 am

    ST-
Congrats on the 27 years and mahalo for the excellent stories and blog.

I like your point on the irony of the Olympic hiring deadline coming and going. At least they didn’t hire anyone we know.

Some of us dream. Some of us do. I am glad Mr. Tsai is a do’er. Otherwise, we really would require the services of the Coach Mack Clinic.

But for the off-season, I think I would not argue about being placed in the CM Clinic for Football Withdrawal. Especially if it were staffed with cheerleaders, Midori7 and UHFan808.

  91. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 8:31 am

My first story was the Macfarlane regatta.
It’s the best because it’s held with the surf (although it’s a grind paddling out to sea against the current).
The regatta started at 8 a.m. But it was in Waikiki, and I had trouble finding parking. I got there at 8:25. I was horrified. I thought, my first assignment and I’m 25 minutes late.
Seven hours later, I’m still at the beach, my shoulders are blistering and I’m thinking about why I didn’t become a CPA like my pops.
Later, I learned, that you never show up at a canoe regatta before 1 p.m.

  92. marlis July 4, 2008 8:34 am

Your right we sure do get a chuckle at what we read. One example, of one that has me rolling of my chair is the Karl Benson (current WAC commissioner) speculation for the soon to be opening for PAC-10 commissionorship. Hold on to your stomach and listen to him. He doesn’t tell you the MWC negotiated a 120 mil./10 year television contract (CBS) and the WAC has 2 years remaining on a television contract (ESPN) that pays the WAC 1 million a year. That’s right… only 1 million a year. Or the poor officiating in all sports. Or his biases to Boise State.

Listening to Jeff’s radio show Wednesday. Benson said he’ll listen if the PAC-10 comes calling. But with reverence Benson, a 75′ alum of Boise State with many distinguished alumni awards from the school, said that …you guessed it…Boise State would be a good fit for the PAC-10. Laughable? If anything I would go with the current MWC commissioner before Benson.

If Benson moved (anywhere would be okay with me) who do you think would be the best fit for WAC Commisioner?

  95. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 8:42 am

My best moments at The Tizer were covering the Chaminade-Virginia game (I was a last-minute fill-in for “Ferd), the UH-Washington game last year, and UH winning the WAC basketball tournament in 1994. My favorite UH people are Tes Whitlock, David Hallums, Michael Carter, Matt Harding, Micah Kroeger, Costas Theocharidis, Dejan Miladinovic, and Doug Vaioleti.
    And two weird moments:
β€’ We were facing a deadline, the top of the sports page was open, and Alika Smith hadn’t committed to UH yet. So I drove over to Kalaheo, where he was sitting in the gym with his girlfriend. I talked to him for about a half hour until he committed. We made deadline.
β€’ I sneaked into Kaiser’s ICU, telling a nurse that I was Riley Wallace’s relative. I walked in, and he was all hooked up to tubes and stuff. He looked at me and said: “What the hell are you doing here?” Ah, good times.

    K, enough about me.
I’ll be back… after I march in the parade.

Just remember that it would not be nice to step on Fumbler’s air hose, fool around with his IV’s, or draw pictures on his chart.

Not that any of us wish evil things for the guy.

But, I do wonder how much disarray he will cause with the USOC. They might show up on the odd years for the Summer Games. Geez.

  104. FloridaTed July 4, 2008 9:10 am

    d1shima,

Hawaii is still a little better off than Florida right now. Our economy went totally in the crapper. 43% of all new condo’s are empty. The real estate frency and the subsequent crash has created a black hole, sucking everything in its wake down the drain. Our loan syndicator has dropped out and the minimum requirement now is a score of at 650 for new new start-ups. That eliminates about 70% of my clients. Oh, well, people here are really scared.

  105. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2008 9:10 am

    Happy Fourth of July Tsaikos!

    God Bless America
    By Irving Berlin

“While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer. ”

    God Bless America,
    Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

Those words ring true as ever these days. Our great country faces challenges at home and abroad which are daunting to say the least. It’s interesting to note that Irving Berlin wrote this American classic in 1939, another time of great challenge and uncertainty for the United States. God Bless America.

I missed the blog yesterday and didn’t have a chance to tell Dara what an excellent bio she posted. I don’t know if she posts under a nic here, but given her experiences with UH football,it would sure be nice to have her perspective thrown into the Tsaiko stew here.

    Tsai,
Among your many great accomplishments here at the HA, you may also add “blog photographer specialist” (or what ever fancy resume padding title you can think of) to the list. Your pics look great, and the stories behind them are just the kind of stuff that we UH fans need to help us through the slow “football news” periods. The pics and stories build our connections to our Warriors as individuals, and they help to put us “in the shoes” of these guys as they walk the Warrior walk(sorry to use that analogy, but the pictures don’t lie). πŸ˜† It’s funny to think back and recall your first pics. Lot’s o’ field and not so much Warrior. Your shots have really improved in content, framing and or cropping. Good job, grass hopper.

    G’day Tsaikos!

Now appearing for my 1st time ever as a Graphic Are-tist, specializing in making T-shirts that carry the Tsaiko persuasion…Ta-dah!…Kekoa!

Some random thoughts of The Pacific School of Fine Arts.

~ Mahalo to da *A-Joe* ohana for putting me thru the “How-To-Make-Any-Kine-Stuffs” in 3 easy lessons in just 4 tries! I konna P guud at it foam now on!

~ ST closely supervised the midnite workshop of *Ocean’s 11* and we somehow managed to keep from blowing up the craft shop.

~ Mahalo to Stretch for teaching me how to sand blast, or blast sand, whichevah. Very hot job, but oh so richly rewarding. Wait until your see all of those blasted glassware items the crew helped him make.

~ Thank you SteveM for helping me keep from melting my slippahs to the heat press!

~ The Evil Twins wore their halo’s slightly tilted to the darkside, but added a bright light to the work ethic of James & Koakane by keeping them busy handling wine and beer mugs…something they are experts at already.

~ Wreck was reminding all of us of the program he has put together for the Blog Bash. Wow!…made me wanna go camp outside the Sheriff Center from Wed. nite so I can be the first one in the door Thurs. at 6 PM!

~ ….and the glue that held us all together, A-Sports, a tip of the UH sports hat and hershey kisses to you gurl. I appreciate your allowing us to share your playhouse for a brief moment in time and create things I never thought possible in this lifetime.

  116. MeiLing July 4, 2008 9:53 am

GRM, mahalo for the tip! I’m jus’ wonderin’ whether I can get boiled peanuts at the Warriors games at Aloha stadium, too.

  123. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2008 10:57 am

Glad I got my Colt autograph before before the crowds started showin’ up. As in last year, pre-season,on his birthday, after practice. My crew, homey and James were the only other guys on the field, as I recall…

By golly, that Jacob Heun looks like a comic book super hero, doesnt he? I say, first we teach him to do the shaka and the Ha’a. Then we put a Warrior green poi pounder insignia on his shirt, right in the middle of his chest. Next we give him a fern haku lei and a short green cape with a taro leaf design, add a black mask ala Vili and… Bam!!! Behold. “The Pounder”!!! Pummeling opposing defenses with his hammering runs and crushing blocks, as he and the rest of the mighty Warriors march to victory!!!

Ok, that prolly sounds silly. Sorry, all this dang writin’ I’m doin’ these days causes the imagination to buckle loose some times. Unless of course you like it, then ummmm, I’m not sorry.

“the pounder” I like it. I think it’s going to stick.

Scout.com has their review of Fresno St. today…rough way to start the season with Rutgers, UCLA, Wisconsin, and Toledo. Although starting with Florida (favored to win the SEC and BCS nat’l championship by many) and finishing with Cincinnati (favored to win the Big East) isn’t easy either.

  130. Mrs. A-House July 4, 2008 11:19 am

Reading the HA this morning, I need to make a “shout out” to the Kodama Koi Company for their donation of 100 Kois to the East-West Center Japanese Garden located on the UH-Manoa campus.

I take this as another example of the community taking pride in UH and their way of making UH a better university.

Thank you to the HA for printing a photo in Section B.

May others use this example to “lift” UH to higher levels – donations can be something other than cash.

As I mentioned before, “let it begin with me”.

  131. Jason July 4, 2008 11:27 am

Happy 4th of July to everyone. And DPK, thanks for posting the lyrics to God Bless America. Every time I think of that song, I think of Ronan Tynan’s renditions at Yankee games. To think of what our nation and the world has gone through since 9/11. Still, it stands strong, able to celebrate yet another birthday.

And congratulations to Stephen, for his anniversary. And to Allie, for her wonderful pictures. She must have taught Stephen a few things, cause he’s getting a lot better. What skill, to be able to get koakane in that shot with Jake Heun. In fact, I think that should be his nickname from now on. Jake “Koakāne” Heun. πŸ˜‰

    Jay Boy-
Happy Fourth to you, nephew. What I didn’t add to the post regarding “God Bless America” was this: our country not only met the challenges in 1939 and the six years that followed, it blossomed into the world power it is today. When we have the will, we can find the way. We see signs of that emerging will, but these next couple of years will very crucial. Maybe you’ll be part of Americas next “Greatest Generation.”

  137. 99club July 4, 2008 11:58 am

    Howzit Kekoa!

I was listening to rivals radio replays this morning and they had June talking about Hawaii. He was really high on our D this year and predicted they’d “bring it” to Florida. They’ll be even better by the end of the season, eh?

(depends on who’s writing that paper of course). Kind of an unknown quantity to outsiders, but we Warrior fans know what JJ knows… They WILL bring it! This team has lots o’ super heroes!

  142. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 12:15 pm

hubby is going to see Wanted starring Moran Freeman and Angelina Jolie this afternoon. Then he will come home and BBQ 4 thin sliced New York steaks. Will eat those with potato salad, broccoli, tossed salad, and for dessert, we will have Mango ice cream.

So looks like we are totally off nutrisystem diet today!

We also had portagee sausage (hot) for lunch.

    haha

  143. Stretch July 4, 2008 12:16 pm

He said it is β€œemotionally draining.”

  149. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2008 12:22 pm

    gigi,
Since it’s the fourth, why not honor the holiday and wash items which are either red, white or blue? Perhaps that will “lighten the load”. πŸ˜‰ See what happens when you drink before noon?! I wont be lethargic until a FULL hour after you! πŸ˜† I suppose I can do that one load of laundry I’m supposed to do after a nap…

  150. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 12:23 pm

stretch, hubby says he can eat just 3-4 hot dogs so cannot enter the contest. What blows him away is most of the contestants were SKINNY. He was so excited he was screaming and his heart was pounding. It went into Overtime, more exciting than a warriors football game.

it was the highlight of his 4th of july, he said.

    MLE = major league eating

Video game for the Wii. — He wants to buy it and throw a party contest at home. Eh, count me out. One hot dog is all I can eat.

  156. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 12:31 pm

Dog Off = overtime when you each have 5 dogs to eat, the 1st one to eat all 5 wins the contest.

    every pulsating bite!

  157. Stretch July 4, 2008 12:34 pm

gigi – hubby better watch out tonight with all this hot dog eating that is going through your mind today.

  158. Stretch July 4, 2008 12:34 pm

gigi – how much did those 4 steaks that you are BBQ’ing cost??

  159. Stretch July 4, 2008 12:37 pm

What is everyone’s thoughts to possibly playing Central Arkansas as the opener next year 2009??

I think playing one and only one 1-AA game a year IF we have 13 games, is okay. If it is only a 12 game schedule, better not. Play two like last year, no can do.

  160. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 12:37 pm

4 steaks cost $11.61 at Sack n save.

last time, hubby bought 3 steaks at Costco for $22. Too much meat cause they were too thick.

the ones I bought today will cook fast.

  161. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 12:39 pm

playing Central Arkansas is as exciting as porridge — but probably good for the team as they brush off the cobwebs to start the season.

  163. al July 4, 2008 12:41 pm

Please note…..all high schoolers interested in playing for the home team

i know there has been much attention brought here about the university’s lack of interest in neighbor island student/athletes. you know my position has been, that if you really want to be a part of the home team, then you gotta go out and grab the attention of the coaches. if you wait it may be too late.

your golden opportunity is here. you must sign up and attend the football camp held by the university of hawaii next week. you must be there to show that you want to be a warrior and that you have the skills, size, talent, and all the other intangibles.

    be there. snooze you loose!

    …nuff said!

Oh, that also means waking up at 6am since husband leaves before that so there is no reinforcement until dinnertime. I’m open to it if he is.

Hope the Tsaiko Ohana is enjoying this special day!

DPK – Thanks for your posts #105 and 136. I admit that I am pessimistic about our long term future as I look around me and see, not our grandparents and great grandparents patiently toiling to build a greater nation, but generations that seem to feel entitled to what they have. And, want more…given to them. I am always up-lifted when examples step forward to prove that image wrong. Alas, they seem too few! There are too many who have never been taught what the price of freedom is. For them, the expectation is that someone else will pay it. I am thankful today that (at least for a little while), we celebrate our past greatness. I am thankful for the Tsaiko Nation whose members have a real caring for each other, and are all too ready to step forward to “get it done”…with humor no less!

    Gigi,

Note of encouragement re your diet. At my WW meeting this week, our leader told us to have 1 meal this weekend where we can whatever we want and not to worry about counting points. Every so often, but not too often, you gotta do it or you’ll come to resent the “diet”. I think my meal will be tomorrow night at the alumni assoc dinner, where I will be seeing Stretch. 240. addahknowjoe July 4, 2008 3:47 pm

    Kekoa/HiFlyer-

You know, those two (Kekoa & James) are the addah Twinz. Those two always end up hanging wit each addah. The Monarch bond is strong between da two!

Not sure who’s Devito or Schwarzenegger, though.

  241. addahknowjoe July 4, 2008 3:49 pm

    Wena-

Did he even bother to wash his Little Learners shirt he had on last night before today’s parade or did he fall asleep in it, get up and just go straight?

  242. Stretch July 4, 2008 3:50 pm

addaHknowjoe – I think it supposed to be Koakane & James

  243. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 3:50 pm

    you mean koakane and James.

  244. Stretch July 4, 2008 3:52 pm

gigi – i too fast for you!!

  245. addahknowjoe July 4, 2008 3:52 pm

    Stretch- you right

  246. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 3:53 pm

jes doing the laundry. made the bed and den…

    tired.

don’t dare drink another beer cause for sure I’ll fall asleep.

  247. Stretch July 4, 2008 3:56 pm

gigi – nothing wrong with taking an afternoon nap. I woke up at 1130, then 230 went back to sleep for almost an hour. What a way to spend the 4th of July!!

  248. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 3:57 pm

    Stretch, You got mail!

  249. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 3:58 pm

for some reason, I have a hard time sleeping during the day no matter how tired I am. Jes drag my okole around. Pretty sad, eh?

hubby is at the movies right now,

hope he doesn’t burn the steaks tonight.

  250. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:01 pm

drinking a diet Pepsi right now to pep me up.

  251. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 4:01 pm

Wena, Sorry I missed your parade. How did it go?

Oops, kinda busted huh ST!?! zzzz…

Woooo Hoooo, it must be my lucky day!!!

  253. J July 4, 2008 4:06 pm

    Hey Wena,

Cheryl stay on da plane. That’s your warning. Kailua might be a little louder tonight.

  254. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2008 4:16 pm

    gigi-
Try the loud patriotic marching band music…

  255. wafan July 4, 2008 4:16 pm

    GG . . .

Wow! Your okole is that saggy that you have to drag it around?

How do you hold it up under the mu’u-mu’u?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

  256. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 4:16 pm

gigi- Wot, hubby didn’t make it a date??? What movie?

  257. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 4:18 pm

Stretch, Must be your lucky day. You got annodah mail!

  258. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 4:19 pm

wafan- Sorry to hear you won’t be able to make July 10th party. Mebbe I’ll get to meet you sometime soon!?!

  259. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:20 pm

eh, DFK, I’m too old to be marching around!

Wafan, das why I wear a muumuu — to hide my okole.

UHfan, since it’s an action film, I didn’t want to go with him. “Wanted”

  260. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:24 pm

hubby is a real movie buff. Watches 4 flicks a week via Netflix. Last holiday, he saw Indiana Jones at the theater.

Remember Silence of the Lambs? He actually enjoyed that cannibal movie. I refused to watch it.

  261. Wena July 4, 2008 4:26 pm

Steve had the Little Learners shirt hanging over the staircase, and this morning, he asked if he can have a brand new shirt, and I said “No Way”. So he was stuck with the stinky one he wore the day before.

  262. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:27 pm

eh, hubby just got home. He said Wanted was TOO VIOLENT. He wishes he had seen Hancock instead.

  263. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:28 pm

OK, now he’s drinking a beer. I agreed to BBQ the steaks cause he is color blind for red and orange.

  264. Wena July 4, 2008 4:29 pm

    J–

They really needed Cheryl on the float. The kids sang well, but they could of used more VOLUME…if you know what I mean.

  265. wafan July 4, 2008 4:30 pm

    GG . . .

Just flip them over your shoulders — no dragging, problem solved.

You just have to remember not to fart, though. You could blow your hair over your eyes and then you would not be albe to see.

Sorry. The mind pictures are getting to me.

  266. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:31 pm

wafan, you sure you not drunk right now?

  267. Wena July 4, 2008 4:32 pm

ok…I’m out of here. The tables are calling.

  268. Da Punchbowl Kid July 4, 2008 4:32 pm

    Who’s DFK?

  269. J July 4, 2008 4:32 pm

    Wena,

What happened to Steve? He’s had a lot of vocal practice…of course if it was quality that you were after, give Joyce the mic.

  270. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:34 pm

sorry, DPK. I am making lots of typos today.

  271. addahknowjoe July 4, 2008 4:37 pm

I beleb DFK= De Funchbol Ked.

    Ayesoos dat one!

  272. wafan July 4, 2008 4:38 pm

    UHfan808 . . .

Sadly, this year I will not be home early enough. Usually, I would be home already — once I am finished with my kids and my work with the national conference I am on a plane West-bound!!! But, this year, I decided to bring Mom up so I can take her to visit Washington D(arn) C(razy).

But, I will be home for most of August! Yahoo!!! I am sure we will have the opportunity for some gatherings then.

  273. Stretch July 4, 2008 4:41 pm

gigi – you must be one of those “one beer queers”. no can handle the alcohol. it’s affecting you 5 hours later

  274. wafan July 4, 2008 4:42 pm

    GG . . .

Yep. I am sure I am not drunk. I do not drink, so being drunk is not an option. I do, however, have a strange sense of humor some people just do not get. During the school year I have to be so straight-laced because of my kids. But, away from them . . .

  275. wafan July 4, 2008 4:43 pm

    Stretch . . .

Maybe GG is a cheap date? One drink then yahooooooo!

  276. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:45 pm

haha I remember drinking from a 1/2 carafe of white wine at Keo’s one night. I was so drunk I felt dizzy and nauseated. That was the last time we ordered 1/2 carafe.

  277. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 4:45 pm

SteveM- Alert, alert, (beep, beep, beep, beep; honk, honk, honk, honk!):

–> wafan coming to town in August !!!!!

    (…unless you already knew…)

  278. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 4:48 pm

wafan, what is the time period you will be in Hawaii? Exact dates, please.

  279. SteveM July 4, 2008 4:51 pm

UHfan808 — yes…alert, alert! I believe wafan mentioned he’d be around when the August 16 date was targeted for a possible Karaoke Call…

But we’ll still shoot for the 16th anyway… mwahahahaha πŸ˜†

  280. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 4:52 pm

wafan- Can we “party” with you??? If so, what you like do??? No worry, we twins (or is it “us”?) drink wata…

  281. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 4:54 pm

SteveM- Yay! We get to meet wafan!!!

  282. wafan July 4, 2008 4:56 pm

7/28-8/22 — Hawaii public schools are in session at that time. Interesting. Do you teach at a public or private school?

  285. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 5:03 pm

DPK, maybe. See how I feel after I BBQ the steaks.

  286. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 5:05 pm

wafan- Please excuse my excitement. I see your posts all the time and will finally get to meet you. Amongst other UH football things, I want to hear your instructions about clearing the sinuses when you’re ill. lol

  287. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 5:05 pm

looking forward to the potato salad. Sack n Save makes a great Best Foods potato salad!

The mango ice cream should be delicious also.

  288. wafan July 4, 2008 5:06 pm

    UHfan808 . . .

Absolutely. I would be honored to have the opportunity to make your acquaintence. There are more Tsai-kos and Tsai-kettes to meet this year! Whoo-hoo!!!

  289. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 5:07 pm

    wait, was that wafan???

  290. UHfan808 July 4, 2008 5:08 pm

gigi, I heard Hancock is not that good either.

  291. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 5:10 pm

UHfan, yeah, hubby read the reviews on the internet. Wanted had better reviews so that’s why he decided to see it.

However, he says Hancock would have been better cause it’s like a Superman flick — it is a happy flick whereas Wanted is just plain violent.

  292. wafan July 4, 2008 5:18 pm

    GG . . .

We are on the traditonal school year — same one you knew when you were in school. I still do not understand the reasoning Hawai’i’s DOE has for having kids and teachers in school during the hottest months of the year. Unless you have a/c in EVERY classroom I would be complaining to the OSHA offices and L & I offices. To be expected to work and learn in teaching areas where temperatures approaching 95+ degrees is ridiculous.

I really think the a/c for all state offices should be unplugged and removed until every classroom has functioning and sufficient a/c. Schools would see some positive action then!

Sorry for the diatribe. I had to contact our L & I office here during the winter when my classroom was down in the 60’s all day, and after the district had its chance to correct the problem. The district sure responded quickly by turning the heat on and leaving it on 24/7.

  293. bighilofan2 July 4, 2008 5:22 pm

The Hawaii BOE is planning to lengthen the summer break by several weeks to enable students and teachers to attend summer school.

I agree it is ridiculous to teach during the hottest months. Daughter likes the new schedule cause of the breaks every few months.

BTW, Lingle has approved the budget to add a/c to some schools with more schools to benefit later.

  295. wafan July 4, 2008 5:25 pm

  296. wafan July 4, 2008 5:29 pm

    GG . . .

Good for the kids! Now all the state has to do is not ding schools for going over their “allotment” of electricity, and maintain the a/c. Otherwise, what is the use? Works for a couple of years and then back to they have now?

The more they tinker with the school year the closer it gets to what it was before. Crazy people who have been out of the classroom too long. Theory works great in the text books!

  297. wafan July 4, 2008 5:31 pm

  299. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 5:39 pm

I think this would be an ideal schedule.

  300. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 5:41 pm

anyway, I really hope you all enjoy your retirement as much as I do. I began to write professionally in 1999, retired from my other job in 2001, and have been having a blast since then.

  301. Stretch July 4, 2008 5:48 pm

bhf2 – if you can, please send me the name of your friend that is joining us for the party. Email to tsaikoparty at yahoo. thanks

  304. Stretch July 4, 2008 6:10 pm

A few REVISED updates for the party

    1. I will be making nametags for everyone. It will include your blog name (if any) and your real first name. If there is anyone who has a problem, please email me at tsaikoparty at yahoo.

    2. We will have β€œTsaiko” logo items for sale. Glass mugs, t-shirts and stickers. There is limited supply but if we run out, we will take orders and make more. See SteveM’s site to view pictures of glassware. http://home.hawaii.rr.com/smurashi/tsai-kos/tsaikoware.html

    3. We will be giving one raffle ticket to each person attending for the prize giveaways. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $2 each, 10 max. Additional donations will be accepted and all money goes to UH/Football. One prize person – if you win a prize, your other ticket numbers will be void.

  305. Ralph July 4, 2008 6:17 pm

Is Mac introducing any songs, Haka, or chants to begin his reign….I read he is revisiting Hawaii 5-0…Many still enjoy and like it, but its old…we need something to tie him to a new era of Warrior fb…we need excitement, those went to SB got a chance to hear the Georgia fans, we need a ramped up atmosphere of our own..

  306. Ralph July 4, 2008 6:21 pm

JJ has a new song writer friend doing one at SMU- Pony Up: Mustang Nation to rise up by Robert Lee Kolb…

Lots of interest and excitement for Mac and the up coming season, we need a cheer or song or both…we need something beyond Vili and his drums…

  307. Ralph July 4, 2008 6:24 pm

Vili has a performance contract and a trademark to his image which UH can’t use without paying him…so why keep him, get another mascot that is UH property and trademark to use and collect royalties for the UHAD and the salary paid out could be used as a tuition waiver for some student to do what Vili is doing at games…

  308. Kekoa July 4, 2008 6:24 pm

BHF2 ~ So you da ankah clankah inside da canoe? Why no make Fred Flinstone and put 2 holes for your feet and walk da bottom. Shallow da wada right?

Had a blast in the Kailua Parade – LOTS of support for keeping beach accesses open. Saw Stephen and Wena beforehand and then again after the finish when we caught a ride on the trolley shuttle back to where we parked.

However, our float was about half way in the middle so we missed the Athletic Director and the Coach.

Afterwards, we went to Boardriders, our favorite sports bar – cool and quiet with all 13 tv sets turned on to one sports channel or another.

    *****

RE helping with setup on Thursday. I keep reading about people working on this or that plus a couple of folks also wrote that they cannot help out which means that they were asked. Again, let me know if you need any help with setup.

    *******

CHANGE OF SUBJECT: A few months ago, Jason encouraged Warrior Beat regulars to help his efforts to raise funds for the Relay For Life event held on campus – in fact, at Cooke Field.

At the time, we said that we would be taking part in the Kailua Relay For Life and would let people know about how to contribute when it came closer to the date.

The Kailua RFL starts on Saturday, July 12, around 3 pm and ends on Sunday, July 13 at 7 am at Kailua Beach Park in the section opposite Buzz’s on the road going into Lanikai.

There’ll be entertainment, food, games, talk story time, and, of course, the opportunity to take part in the Relay itself – all in a location often named as one of the finest beaches in the world.

Here’s how you can support the Kailua event even if you don’t attend in person. Please make a donation to honor someone who has dealt with cancer or to recognize someone who’s had a job promotion or a birthday or graduation in the family or whatever needs to be celebrated.

Make your check payable to the American Cancer Society. If you want it to go to the Windward Branch of the American Cancer Society, then note on the memo line it is for the Kailua Relay For Life. If you want it to go to the larger organization, just leave the memo line blank.

You can mail it to the American Cancer Society, Windward Unit, 130 Kailua Road, Suite 102B, Kailua, HI 96734. Or you can give it to DrDoc or me at the Blog Bash on July 10 and we’ll deliver all the checks to the Windward Unit in one bundle.

We’re recognizing four Warrior Beat families this way – two who are dealing with cancer and two who are celebrating a milestone in their immediate families.

    ******

Another family-oriented event coming up on July 19 in the afternoon – a picnic barbecue in Nu`uanu Valley. We’re asking for a few volunteers to help set up the EZ Corner tents plus tables & chairs beforehand OR to work with older kids & teens on basketball, volleyball, or football skills for about 1-1/2 hours in exchange for fantastic food and fun while helping out a really wonderful program called Family Promise.of Hawai`i.

More to come on this by the end of weekend.

Off to watch the fireworks. Be safe everyone.

  310. Jason July 4, 2008 6:32 pm

gigi: You’re drinking the wrong beer, you gotta drink Pabst Blue Ribbon. (Read post #140 if you don’t get it.)

One prize person – if you win a prize, your other ticket numbers will be void.

    Aww…

  311. Stretch July 4, 2008 6:39 pm

Jason – reasoning is that we want everyone, if you can afford to buy additional tickets or not, to have a chance to win a prize. There is not TONS of prizes so want to make sure more people win rather than have one person who wins multiple prizes.

  312. Kekoa July 4, 2008 6:39 pm

Attention In Da Village! On DA Aina!

    Pauoa Boy is now in-country!…

He touched down at Hickam about 17:40 and is sequestered at the Pauoa Boy Compound undergoing Agricultural Decon. Just like Californians no like our Ag bugs coming ovah. We think they should be heavily inspected before they are allowed in our State.

Anywayz, he’s got a family BBQ planned tonite and then the Speed & Quickness clinic in the AM. I asked him to save some time to visit da Wessai. Shoots! Kinhn Channa sumni da!(Jason help me out brah!).

  313. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 6:47 pm

    OK.
I’m awake again. Mufi said hi at the parade. I asked him if he was coming to the party. He said, yes, but you never know.

  314. Jason July 4, 2008 6:50 pm

Stretch: What I’m wondering about is if you win something, and then something you like better comes along and one of your voided numbers gets called.

Kekoa I don’t even know what you’re trying to say there. This is why there needs to be one consistent way of Romanizing Korean.

  315. Stretch July 4, 2008 6:51 pm

ST – Tell him toooo late, it’s after 12 noon. If he shows up, I will turn him away. hahaha

  316. Stretch July 4, 2008 6:52 pm

I am still learning this whole computer thing. I was actually able to upload the photos of the Tsaiko glassware. See attached link.

Count me in for one of those 16 oz glasses.

  318. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 7:03 pm

How many of them are there?

  319. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 7:05 pm

    Jason,

I don’t get it. What has Pabst Blue Ribbon got to do with Becks?

  320. Stretch July 4, 2008 7:05 pm

I am interested in people’s interest but NOT taking orders now. First come first serve at the party.

I hope Mufi can make it — just so I can personally tell him what a great idea having a train running from Kapolei thru Salt Lake is.

Steel on steel tech is what Tokyo uses. Super quiet inside and out. I really liked it.

OK, for those following my thread — the BBQ steaks were excellent. Thin slice so they cooked fast.

    I ate 2 and hubby ate 2.

    Great dinner.

I think all of you will appreciate the craftsmanship (craftswomanship?) of the designer glasses. The Twins, the Addaknows, Stretch, Kekoa, SteveM, James, Koakane and Wreck did an excellent job. It takes a lot of patience to wrap (Stretch, Midori7) and unwrap (Koakane).

  331. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 7:32 pm

Pretty interesting lineup at the QB Club on Monday: Kevin Lempa (former UH defensive coordinator) and Delbert Tengan.

Happy 4th of July everyone. A big Mahalo to the men and women of our Armed Forces and all of our Veterans who have sacrificed so much in defense of our freedom. The lyrics from a song by Team America to help remember our brothers and sisters serving overseas. May they have a safe 4th of July.

    Freedom isn’t Free

    What would you do
If you were asked to give up your dreams for freedom?
    What would you do
If asked to make the ultimate sacrifice?

Would you think about all them people
Who gave up everything they had?
Would you think about all them War Vets
And would you start to feel bad?

    Freedom isn’t free
It costs folks like you and me.
And if we don’t all chip in
    We’ll never pay that bill.
    Freedom isn’t free.
No, there’s a hefty (xxxxxxx) fee.
And if you don’t throw in your buck ‘o five
    Who will?

    What would you do
If someone told you to fight for freedom?
    Would you answer the call
Or run away like a little (xxxxxx)?
‘Cause the only reason that you’re here
Is ’cause folks died for you in the past.
So maybe now it’s your turn
    To die kicking some (xxx).

    Freedom isn’t free
It costs folks like you and me
And if we don’t all chip in
    We’ll never pay that bill
    Freedom isn’t free
No, there’s a hefty (xxxxxxx) fee.
And if you don’t throw in your buck ‘o five
    Who will?

You don’t throw in your buck ‘o five. Who will?
    Oooh buck ‘o five
Freedom costs a buck ‘o five

Sorry about the xxxx part. Explicit lyrics and I don’t want to get SMU’d. For the members of our five military services and military civilians that are spending this 4th of July away from home, God Bless You and Thank You for your service and sacrifice.

  334. Stretch July 4, 2008 7:33 pm

ST – should be an interesting Monday QB Club. I wonder what DT has to say??

  335. BG July 4, 2008 7:36 pm

Back for a little while…Howzit dere Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

Ralph #307 Sounds like you have the financial analysis OK, but the execution may have pitfalls. Do you remember what it was like when the UH ran the mascot program? It wasn’t pretty. Vili represents the best depiction of a Warrior that we have ever had. He’s a showman who personifies Strength and Power, and Hawaiiana without the ridiculous foam rubber costumes that so many schools employ. I cringed every time that pink, bubble gum mascot came on the field in the days before Vili. 😳 Yikes!!!

  336. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 7:39 pm

Maryland Terrapins football team — Kevin Lempa is secondary coach (per Wikipedia). Is this THE kevin we know?

  337. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 7:44 pm

Don’t worry, Gigi, we’re going to prepare you so that one day when we give a name from the past, you won’t need Wikipedia.

  338. Ralph July 4, 2008 7:46 pm

BG the wrong people ran the mascot program, who would have taught of a marshmallow man for a mascot…DUH..oh, its you, Rep. Mark Takai…you’re forgiven since I know your mom and dad and I know they raised with a lot more sense than your ASUH days.

  339. Ralph July 4, 2008 7:51 pm

BG give a tuition waiver to a student in ethnic studies or Hawaiian studies to represent Hawaiiana in a form of a warrior..Vili could be a hollywood version of what a true hawaiian warrior looked like back in the days. Don’t recall seeing any warriors looking like Vili at the Bishop Museum…His image could be a stereotyping of a warrior, UH should ask the Hawaiian Studies peeps if his image is appropriate.

  340. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 7:53 pm

ST, per Google, there are quite a few Kevin Lempas running around in this world.

Very confusing for a neophyte like me.

BTW, when I googled my real name, I saw a lawyer with my 1st and maiden name living in Austin Texas.

And there’s one with my first and married name living in New Zealand.

    Pretty scary.

  341. Jason July 4, 2008 7:54 pm

Wow, gigi actually looked something up? 😯

  342. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 7:57 pm

There’s another ST. Apparently he’s an attorney with a popular Web site. Sometimes I’ll go through Google, and he’ll be the top search. But then UH will do something and the WB goes back to No. 1.

  343. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 7:57 pm

Jason, this is one of those nights when I am not being lazy. haha

  344. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 7:59 pm

ST, kind of freaky, eh? I think it is because my name — GCH — is so unusual.

eg., Hubby is the only Hinchey in the phone book.

  345. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 8:01 pm

Being the only Hinchey in the phone book is kind of interesting. When I write letters to the editor, people look up Hinchey and call me regarding my letter.

It’s like having a fan club cause these callers are so pleasant.

  346. Stephen Tsai July 4, 2008 8:06 pm

Well, I must be a bad blog host. Almost every Tizer blog has something about the 4th of July. I just figured we all know it’s the 4th, and we know about the history of the country.
    Anyway, my bad.

  347. Jason July 4, 2008 8:09 pm

July 4 is George Steinbrenner’s birthday. Speaking of New York teams, the Knicks signed Chris Duhon to a 2-year deal.

  348. Jason July 4, 2008 8:10 pm

Actually, he will sign with them. Verbal agreement.

  349. gigi-hawaii Β© July 4, 2008 8:13 pm

July 4 used to be an important date for me when I was working full-time. I would always schedule my vacation around that date in order to have an extra paid day.

    There were some memorable trips.

    Croatia July 1990.

    East coast July 1987.

    New York City July 1997.

Now that I am retired, it doesn’t matter.

  350. BG July 4, 2008 8:48 pm

Wait up, Ralph. No need to be PC…sometimes that pendulum just swings too far the other way and becomes ridiculous again. I don’t believe Vili is billed as or is called the “Hawaiian Warrior”. He is “Vili the Warrior”. And I don’t see where the UH is called the “Hawaiian Warriors”. The football team is the “Warriors”. Yes, a lot of Polynesian culture is infused into the program, but there’s nothing I see (I could have missed it) that says the mascot has to be Hawaiian.

Anyway, that’s what I think. You have your opinion, and I’ll respect that.

  351. BG July 4, 2008 8:51 pm

    Welcome home, PB!

  352. BG July 4, 2008 8:54 pm

you know i got to know stretch real well this past year. he is a man of integrity and would do battle for any of his friends without question.

tonight, i will go to bat for stretch, because he won’t say a word to any of you.

    re: BLOG ANNIVERSARY BASH..

—the order has been placed to the caterer based upon everyone’s email rsvp to stretch.

—approximately 50 of the 137 rsvp’s have not made payment yet.

—stretch has his name on the dotted line for the contract.

please, please, please…if you haven’t made payment yet you need to mail your check to him tomorrow. don’t stiff a fellow blogger!

—that’s too much money to be left hanging. if you rsvp’d, that was your word/promise to pay for your committment to the blog party.

don’t forget pre-paid tickets was $20 per head and at the door it will be $25 per head.

    mahalo!

  371. Barry Markowitz July 4, 2008 10:11 pm

Ralph, you are absolutely correct re: Vili the paid professional performer. I recall in publicly reported financial demands a few years ago re: a video football game including NCAA mascots, Vili denied he was the UH Football mascot…again he purportedly claimed he was an independent contractor paid professional performer…not part of any NCAA game deal. But…if you do a search on Vili in the local Hawaii newspapers, you will find an interview, I think by the Tiser, inwhich Vili (again as I recall from memory) was proud to be the newly contracted UH Mascot. Can one have it both ways?

  372. Stretch July 4, 2008 10:14 pm

It isn’t only me working on this party. There are a number of us putting this together. All I am doing is collecting the money and paying the bills.

  380. Ralph July 4, 2008 10:27 pm

BG you okay with a Japanese, Filipino, or Caucasian warrior dressed in hawaiian or polynesian attire running around the stadium..I don’t think so…yes we are a multi racial culture in Hawaii but I do think the intent was to reflect an image of a Hawaiian warrior

  381. Stretch July 4, 2008 10:28 pm

Bulla – funny you should mention folding the money in half to look like more. I admit I have done that a few times at restaurants for tip. I fold it in half leave it under the plate so the waiter thinks he get’s a HUGE tip.

  382. Ralph July 4, 2008 10:34 pm

Al well put, thank you for bringing it up…folks its an honor system, guys like Stretch has stepped forward and paid up front for all of us to make the bash happen and I hope for those who haven’t paid feel a sense of responsibility and send in your check. Don’t hedge, thinking what if I don’t go, waste money, but Stretch is paying up front for your RSVP commitment..Rich did the same with UNLV game, bought a lot of tickets for people he did not know and everyone paid up, it the right thing to do

    Stretch:

I do not know who the invited guests are, but any one who invited some one to the blog bash is responsible for paying the $20 fee, not the Tsaikos who attend.

I really miss those days where a “hand shake or word’ was a person’s honor.

  387. stacyj July 4, 2008 10:41 pm

Re: Warrior, I have always said Vili is not what I would say represents a Hawaiian Warrior. I found his act to be very un-Hawaii. Never was a fan of that.

There was a real life Warrior at one time.

  388. stacyj July 4, 2008 10:41 pm

he’s adjusting to ‘college life’, but his focus is laser and determination rock solid. #95 hopes to do his best come 9-6-08 at aloha stadium. i will have oxygen and a defribrillator with me for that one, haha.

cannot wait to see everyone at the Blog Bash, i hear the Yeager Bombers will be making a guest appearance……will there be a dance routine? i don’t know, but i wouldn’t underestimate those 3 Tsaikettes at all…..lively even at church, haha.

Gigi, I don’t mind entertaining and drumming. I don’t like the way he depicts a warrior. Last time I saw a Hawaiian warrior, he didn’t look remotely like Vili. Just my personal issue.

I like the suggestion of bringing it back to a student involvement type of thing. Get some students to do the drumming too. The more students involved the better.

    Hi Stacyj –
re: post #386. I remember when there was a warrior for the mascot, but there was also some conflict from the native Hawaiians since the buff parts were fake. He looked the part, but there was that same ‘authenticity’ issue. So, basically, it all comes down to personal preference, I guess.

  414. SteveM July 4, 2008 11:58 pm

Stretch — good job. In fact, I modified and used 3 photos from your site.

BTW, I enjoy seeing the albums posted on the Tsai-ko events. There, people can get a feel of the occasion from different perspectives. I ask everyone that I be allowed to snitch a few pix once in a while for my web site archives to mark the occasion.

PB & others – I will check the mail again on Monday.

Barry most schools is not all except Hawaii have mascots! UH can’t claim Vili as a mascot because he is a professional performer whose image is trademarked and as a performer he performs at UH games and events. Somewhere I read that he is paid about $65K and I don’t know if this is a fact. But a university mascot with a tuition waiver will cost us about $7K for a resident and about $10K for non resident. UH ends up with a mascot, college kid gets financial assistance. UHAD should look at ways of helping kids pay for school, how about someone on the scout team, they don’t dress for the game and I’m sure there are some without scholarships

Since you’re on O`ahu now, you can use your India Cafe gift certficate. The restaurant is located at Kilohana Square on upper Kapahulu Avenue. However, I need to have your real name. Please send it to info at waa-hawaii dot org. I’ll make sure that the certificate is waiting for you at the restaurant. I’ll let you know when it’s there.

A-House: Just to let you know that the Athletic Department will make sure that all safety aspects of the proposed community service project tentatively scheduled in August are or will be covered.

Am beat – not only did we march in the Parade today but also we walked from the Enchanted Lake area down to the beach to see the fireworks. Off to bed before I fall out of my chair.
