Scrimmage plans

Taylor Graham, Ikaika Woolsey and Jeremy Higgins will split the reps at quarterbacks in Friday’s extended situational scrimmage.

The rotation does not mean UH has selected a starting quarterback for its next game, against Colorado State on Oct. 26. Sean Schroeder will be withheld from the scrimmage because he already has played a significant number of reps in the past three games. The coaches want to give more work to Graham, who has missed the past three games, Woolsey and Higgins. As always, the QBs will be wearing red jerseys during the scrimmage and will not be allowed to be hit.

* * * * *

Every year, there is an unheralded player who emerges into a significant role. For the year, slot receiver Donnie King has been that guy, gaining attention since spring training. During the season, Bubba Poueu-Luna has resurrected his career as a kickoff returner. Of the first-year Warriors, cornerback Anthony Pierce was a widely overlooked recruit. He grayshirted in the fall of 2012 and joined the Warriors in January. But the coaches have praised Pierce’s quickness and toughness. He is now UH’s No. 3 corner, behind starters Ne’Quan Phillips and Dee Maggitt.

  11. jeezy33 October 15, 2013 7:46 am

Looks like we are back into the Von Appen era. What I see is a poorly coached, no discipline team that just doesn’t know how to win. The team plays hard and has a lot of heart but you need to have a coach that can lead.

I haven’t noticed a talent disparity in any of our MWC games besides QB play.

The thing that stands out the most is poor halftime adjustments by the coaching staff and consistently making the same mistakes over and over. It was not that loud at all at the stadium and Hawaii kept on jumping off sides, false starts, and trying to switch personnel when UNLV didn’t, getting caught up with 12 men on the field. Inexcusable.

Good to see the younger guys stepping up but there is 0 leadership on the team that starts with the HC. It doesn’t take 4 or 5 star talent to play discipline football.

  12. Don Weir October 15, 2013 7:54 am

Up here with PolyMom and Senor Pepe on the mainland in Hermosa Beach.
Part of our morning coffee discussion was how to involve more alumni in athletic events on the mainland: Regional coordinators: Major outreach: Part of the 3-4-5 yr plan??

    Here are some throw out questions that floated around this morning;
    1. how about taking over the Ala Wai golf course for a stadium?
    2. how about selling all remaining tickets on game day no matter location in the stadium for $10?
    3. how about UH leasing the stadium?

  13. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 7:58 am

Aloha all…and Jeezy I agree that the team needs to cut down on the plethora of what appear to be small miscues, but in the cumulative, are affecting outcomes of the game.

  14. A-House October 15, 2013 8:04 am

Happy belated Birfday to all those special October people!!

  15. A-House October 15, 2013 8:18 am

    Hi Don and PolyMom!

#1: many have suggested this course of action and all have raised the specter of traffic and revolt by the “seniors” who think they own the golf course.

#2: suggested discounted tickets to Ben J before and was promptly shot down – he said he would never sell tickets for $10 or $15 and this was for the “yellow section” – can you imagine his ire on selling tickets in the “blue” section for $10 – yikes those who paid the high price and premium seat charge would go bananas – but, I personally agree better to have a full stadium than less than half full

#3: UHAD says they don’t have the expertise and man power to undertake such a venture – but, UH doesn’t have to be the ones to “run” the stadium; hire an outside party. Also, give the School of Business, Arts & Sciences, General Counsel’s Office, Law School, and Culinary Academy of the Pacific ( aka Kapiolani CC ) to handle the food. Class be for selected students/senior class as a semester and/or year long project and be graded on their product. Each succeeding year, another selected class can “add on” to the “product”.

on the side, A-Joe, I believe, suggested the use of “volunteers” for parking and inside the stadium and he was also promptly shot down by Ben J – and this was after Ben J gushed with pride how The Ohio State used volunteers to assist on game days.

me thinks I c person with “forked tongue”.

  16. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 8:34 am

My own suggestion is that via the athletic department and development office, they make an identification of alums that will agree to donate $1,000, and that same person find 10 other like minded folks for a total of $11,000. And this would be multiplied by 100. This form of development is simply known as bundling, and then could be leveraged for an equal match from the legislature or the university itself, thus making the total over $2,000,000.

Towards that end, I agree to be the first one…..

  20. Former UH Athlete October 15, 2013 9:08 am

King and Bubba have been nice surprises. (Except for King’s costly fumble vs UNLV when fighting for yards).

13…. Add me to that list. Lots of little mistakes (mostly mental) by UH. It’s a characteristic of down programs. Eventually, they grow out of it.

Jeezy, talent is definitely not the main issue. The main issue I see after seeing the boys play in Vegas, there is a lack of upperclassmen leadership. There isn’t any player getting in the face of his teammates telling them to step it up and holding guys accountable. That’s how the little mistakes get fixed. A coach yelling at a player is one thing (and deserved if its a mental error), but the best motivation comes from the team leaders and captains (Afusia, Samia and Yap were captains on Saturday).

I don’t see Afusia getting vocal in firing up the unit after good or bad play. Same goes for Samia and Yap. They are going about their business like everyone else. I don’t see Dailey or Laurel firing guys up either. Even JH-T just plays and doesn’t seem to get too emotional. Almost like UH has too many even tempered guys. I hope I’m wrong on this.

Colt Brennan was a fiery guy that pumped up the offense when things were rolling and was talking to guys when things weren’t going smoothly. The players rallied behind him. I do see Nequan Philips taking the leader role next year on defense.

I don’t see it on the field with this team, but there can be a rift between the upperclassmen from the old coach and the underclassmen of the new coach. Not saying that this is an issue with UH specifically, but it’s not uncommon when there’s a total regime change.

WSU went through awful in-fighting within the roster during in Leach’s 1st year. He’s totally cleaned house (basically 1/4 of roster was booted or quit), and looks like they are better now, even with a horribly mistake prone QB.

Colorado is going through a cleansing process with MacIntyre this year (I don’t hear CU fans calling for him to be fired after being completely non-competitive in Pac12 play this year. Lots of ‘we suck’ comments but no fire coach comments like some UH commenters started drumming up last year). There’s a decent chance CU loses to Charleston Southern this week.

  21. Former UH Athlete October 15, 2013 9:16 am

19… interesting. I think Mariota needs one more year before declaring… unless they win the championship. If he leads Oregon to the big one, all bets are off as his stock won’t get higher.

I think Mariota will need the right kind of offensive coordinator to succeed in the NFL that will adjust the offense to his skill set. The great news for him is that he has size, speed and solid arm. He’s more refined than Kaepernick was at the same age. If he goes to a west coast style offense that requires a lot of quick reads, I’m not sure he’ll do well at first.

  22. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 9:17 am

20-FUHA–did you see my little observation from yesterday, was it just me, but was our backside flat consistently open for screen and bubble passes this past Saturday…?

  23. Whats up October 15, 2013 9:18 am

Scrimmages are nice but I live game against Colorado would have been better for the young team as a whole. We know that the offense is better and the defense is not as good as the first 3 games. Even the coaches could have used an extra game to fine tune the game planning and play calling. What could have been this Sat on Oct 19th? Oh well.

  24. NotNasti October 15, 2013 9:23 am

Ala Wai Site: As more and more seniors go by the wayside, there will be less of a push-back from the “owners” of the Ala Wai “Country Club.” Their numbers have diminished to the point that it is noticeably easier to get a tee time and stand-by time at the golf course. I love the idea of turning the Ala Wai site into a sports complex/convention center/fair grounds. The proximity to Waikiki (hotels) would and acreage are ideal. I live in Kapahulu, and would be able to walk to the games. The deal breaker, and I’m not a civil engineer, will be ingress/egress to the Ala Wai area. Moving 30-40 thousand people in and out of Waikiki efficiently (without a mass transit line) may prove impossible. Could on/off ramps be built connecting H-1 to the Ala Wai? Probably, but at what cost? I would like an on-campus stadium. The apartments and homes mauka of the freeway would have to be condemned, and another parking structure built, but easier to plan from an infrastructure point of view.

  25. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 9:25 am

21–ditto, ditto, ditto. The feature that has come up clearly for me, is that kids that play in really productive “systems” have a real transition with the Sunday game. Now, that said, he does has all the physical attributes, but as we can see at present, even elite athlete QBs, ala Cam and Colin (CC and company), the defenses are some damn quick and strong, coupled with how they identify player match-ups with offensive packages, that after they get film on you and can chart tendencies, they can mitigate all that athletic ability really quickly.

  26. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 9:27 am

24—counselor we talking condemnation action–eminent domain??

  27. NotNasti October 15, 2013 9:29 am

Boola: eminent domain, good for some people, bad for others, if you know what I mean.

  28. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 9:32 am

26–Ain’t that the truth. Not to be insensitive, but we get paid either way–literally.

  29. jeezy33 October 15, 2013 9:33 am

    20. Honestly, the key is having a leader at QB on offense and MLB on defense. Safety would help too… When your team faces adversity, the whole team looks up to the QB to make a play for u on offense. That’s what Colt and Rolo brought to the table. Our good defenses, we had guys like Parades, Pisa, Ulbrich as guys the defenses looked up too. They bring in confidence in others to trust what they do.

Right now, it seems like guys are looking around for someone to make something happen versus wanting to be that guy. SS is doing what he can with his limited amount of ability.

Crazy how O line play is the least of my worry at this point in the season. They have done a decent enough job to keep us in games. All our losses in my opinion falls back on leadership and lack of discipline. Stupid penalties, giving up big plays in critical moments, turnovers, and poor coaching have really cost us…

San Jose St and UNLV were truly winnable games where we lost because of the reasons I mentioned. If we were 2-4 at this point, I think this season could be turned around. 0-6, going to make it difficult to sell recruits, sell fans, and make players buy in to everything. I will still attend the next home game but I don’t blame fans who choose to do something that would entertain them more.

  30. madeinhawaii October 15, 2013 9:34 am

    Aloha Don Weir,

To what A-House and NotNasti provided. Let’s get the rail done and get it to go to UH or as close as possible. Then as long as the stadium is on the Rail’s path, where it is shouldn’t matter all that much (at least for students).

Ala Wai golf course used to be a favorite practice driving range for the Japanese businessmen and tourists between their reserved rounds elsewhere. But since the Japanese don’t come in the numbers they used to (not enough hotel rooms) there are probably a lot less of them at the Ala Wai.

  31. sdbowfan October 15, 2013 9:37 am

JJ knew the culture. Chow a local boy has turned into a twinkie. JJ made an effort for the mainland kids to get to know the local kids and become a family. The team played for each other. You can see that the team is a bunch of individuals that just wanted a D one schollie. Come on local twinkie do your culture homework.

  32. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 9:39 am

29–I agree with jeezy’s hardball analogy. Strength up the middle, always reflects the stoutness and leadership of the team. Even in my day, from Ralph, to Niko, to Rich on the backend, you had a consistent line of strength.

  33. LizKauai October 15, 2013 9:57 am

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE!!!

I am normally quiet about coach decisionmaking – except for the past “let’s run it up the middle on first down every possession” predictability…

But this time I have to say MAKE SEAN SCHROEDER OUR STARTING QB, PERFECT HIM AND LET THE TEAM RALLY BEHIND HIM.

Taylor is not accurate enough to fix in time to have a chance to WIN.
Balancing the scrimmage based on reps is not going to WIN the game come gameday.

It’s not for me that I am emphasizing the WIN… it’s for the KIDS. KIDS GOTTA WIN ONE.
    Or two or three.
Equal time in practice is not going to WIN on the playing field.
Pick the starters and the special groups and let them PRACTICE WINNING in practice.

    OK..
    back to my normal self.

    HiHo!

You guys are very observant and make interesting comments. And for Leadership? I’m still wondering why Tommy Lee left the team after only one year. You might notice that he was very quiet during the season. So also, what happened to Aaron Price? Did he step on Chow’s integrity? Or was he just showing too much leadership?

Now on another subject, Will Oceanic Time Warner reveal just how many homeowners subscribed to the Television “Package’. Are we going downhill in so far as numbers are concerned? I would think so! With the kind of football finess we have been experiencing, fans lose interest and our program lose money. Ben Jay must watch that bottom line because we can’t wait forever for better play. No, unfortunately, I don’t have the answers. Just stating a passing comment. Chow takes the attention away from himself after the Vegas game by saying ” the boys played their butt off”. Yes, they always do but this is a standard comment from a losing coach.

  40. 89leeslb October 15, 2013 10:38 am

Hawaii is ranked #27 nationwide in passing yards per game according to the current NCAA statistics. Though Sean Schroeder has technically appeared in 5 games, in actuality he has only played in less than 3 full games. If his game statistics were calculated at 3 games (instead of 5), he would be ranked second in the nation in passing yards per game. I know it is just a statistic, but pretty impressive. For the few of you, who continue to criticize his efforts, I thought this statistic provides a better indication of his performance this season.

  41. SteveM October 15, 2013 10:39 am

RE: #24: ingress/egress to the Ala Wai area

In my military years, I noticed that the Army types considered water and rivers as barriers and obstacles. Navy-Marine types considered them roads and UDT/SEAL access.

The Ala Wai canal that makes Waikiki an isthmus and restricts vehicular traffic is a navigable body of water. It is another “road” to any proposed stadium. University of Washington stadium has boat access and moorings right next to the stadium on game day.

Imagine water taxi and small ferry services from the parking of the convention center or the boat harbor or any Waikiki bus stop near the canal.

  42. Former UH Athlete October 15, 2013 10:49 am

22… No I didn’t see the comment, but Yeah, UH got caught in man underneath on some of the swing passes and Art Laurel got matched up vs the RB. He doesn’t have the speed to cover in the flat one on one. Cornett and Thomas were both getting the corner with Laurel in pursuit.

Also, TJ and Garcia-Williams all were a little out of control when trying to tackle the RB or WR in the short flat. The initial pursuit was very good, but when the UNLV player cut up field, the 1st UH defender arriving went flying past the ball carrier. They just have to break down their steps… If they were a little more under control, they make the tackle or usher to the sideline for short gains. I’m not too concerned about this because UH is getting to the edge contain and it’s an easy fix.

Jeezy — OLine pass protection has gotten much better now that UH is playing MWC defenses. SS was barely touched Saturday… only 1 sack and only a couple hurries. Coaching will always be questioned in losses, but the play calling is way more diverse and creative now. I mentioned the other day the fly sweep package was very successful. The stupid false start penalties are individual mistakes. When running the fast tempo, there’s no reason for any false starts because there’s little to no cadence being yelled by QB. They certainly aren’t going “on 2” or doing hard counts at the pace they are playing at.

I think MWC offensive coordinators are starting to attack Yap and Woodard on the run… Fresno, SJSU, and UNLV all got 200yards rushing on UH. UNLV was the only one of those three considered to have a good run game. The bigs (Samia, Malepeai, and Matagiese) are doing their job and clogging the middle. Cornett only averaged a couple yards when running in the A gaps. Virtually all the big run plays given up are starting in the B and C gaps and occasionally on a sweep. SJSU and Fresno got run yards because UH was only playing 3 up front in effort to corral their quick passing offenses.

SJSU was just a bad game by all units on UH. Easily the worst game of year. So there’s not much value in drawing anything from that one.

The one thing that I picked up on since Jones left is that the WRs are body catching the ball way more than before. JJ was adamant about WRs using their hands. Once Salas and Pilares graduated, the drops have become an issue since 2011. Virually all of Gant’s drops are when he lets the ball come to his body. He doesn’t drop anything when reaching out with his hands. He didn’t drop any of the jump balls vs Fresno.

Putting on my amateur def coordinator hat and keeping the same schemes (4-3 & 3-3-5) to keep things realistic….
For the 4-3, no major changes other than adding Daily-Lyles to the DE rotation to keep them Yap and Woodard fresh. The other suggestion I had was to give Kennedy more work, but that appears its going to be a reality. Adding Daily-Lyles and Kennedy bumps the rotation to 7 main players. Right now, its primarily Samia, Woodard, Yap, Matagiese, & Malepeai are the main 5. Tepa and a few others only getting spot duty. With the fast tempo offenses, there needs to be 7 or 8 guys rotating.

For the 3-3-5, I would have Samia, Matagiese and Malepeai up front and move Yap or Woodard to a 2 point stance. That way, in the 3 man front, there’s enough beef to hold up against the run. Then you would rotate Kennedy and Yap/Woodard to round the rotation, plus the others here and there. UH is very versatile in the LBs and DBs so there’s a number of combinations that can be used and has been used.

UH currently has been using Yap, Woodard + 1 big on the 3 man front and the 260lb Yap & Woodard just can’t hold up vs the OTs pounding down on them the whole game.

    YEA! Salas and Green J E T S !!!!

  44. Former UH Athlete October 15, 2013 11:08 am

41/24… A stadium at Ala Wai would be cool, and construction wouldn’t be that tough, but it would be a horrendous nightmare for traffic, far worse than Aloha stadium.

There’s no room in Manoa valley, Diamond Head would be a fun location, but there’s zero chance that location is passed since DH is iconic and the upper-crust would allow a stadium near their area.

If I had $500 million to spend for stadium, it would be in lower campus. You can build all the athletic offices and training rooms within the stadium, so the current office building is expendable. Current weight room in SSC would now just be for non-football sports. You have just enough space to build an intimate 40,000 seat stadium (like original Autzen Stadium in Oregon) on top of Ching Field without messing with Rainbow Stadium or the softball field. They would have to reroute and widen lower campus road. Like every other on campus stadium in America, rest of college parking lots become game day parking lots charging $5-$10 per car depending on location. Koa Anuenue gets one maybe two floors of parking in the quarry, the rest is $20 game day parking fee. Students get free admission. Keep ticket price same, but offer fat discount for season ticket and parking packages until attendance is healthy again.

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid October 15, 2013 11:15 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Good suggestions from the Hale Poly, Mr. Weir.

As for the Ala Wai Stadium idea, we have bandied that idea around before here on the WB, and I recall one of the more talented among us, (A-joe?) put up a photo-shopped vision of an Ala Wai stadium. Among the interesting possibilities for that idea, a building partnership/naming rights deal with one of the hotel chains and the Sheraton Hawaii Stadium, home of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, for example. With easy access to Waikiki, it would help walk up sales and visiting fans, and give a push to marketing UH Football to the Asian market if Asian visitors had a college game within walking distance of their hotels. Think of what a Waikiki Rainbowtique store could do in sales under those circumstances. Building that stadium as an athletic complex would also help to draw visitors and events into Waikiki. An Ala Wai Stadium is definitely worthy of consideration, especially if we would like to have help from corporate sponsors in its construction. On the downside – traffic and parking.

Donnie King is an inspiration. I see his family at practices and watch Donnie working hard, under any circumstances. Happy to see him earn a scholie.

Happy Birthday to all the October babies!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  46. Da Punchbowl Kid October 15, 2013 11:20 am

“hotel chains, the Sheraton Hawaii Stadium…*” that should read above.

  47. papajoe2 October 15, 2013 11:22 am

Move the golf course to inside the Diamond Head crater THEN build a stadium on the old Ala Wai Golf Course. Tour companies and taxis will have more jobs shuttling the tourist golfers and hotel guests to both the golf course and the new stadium. Build rail to UH via Waikiki, saving fuel and traffic for vehicles, with a stop at the stadium. Also a bridge to the stadium from Waikiki. Water shuttle, like Washington, sounds good too but must dredge the canal, making it deeper for the larger boats. Canal could go in land to accomodate a turn around/dock area. I don’t know if there is enough room under the current bridges for larger boats though. Could also use the canal area to pick up tourist for other boat tours on off days AND game days, instead of people going to the Ala Wai Harbor or Kewalo Basin for such. Open a flea market at the new stadium, ala San Jose, open daily except on game days or other such major events at the stadium. Probably some of these ideas ar far fetched but could be worthy to take a look.

I read it some where that Hawaii is running the fast tempo offense FASTER THAN OREGON that is ridiculous i never would’ve thought that but as much flack as the oline has been getting they have been playing better as of late partially to schroder not holding on to the ball

  50. Babo October 15, 2013 11:28 am

Wait! Norm Chow still has a job? Wow….

  51. AlaWai October 15, 2013 11:35 am

The Ala Wai GC is the busiest Muni in the US and one of the only money makers the City owns. Seniors make up only a small amount of players. It is an Urban course that attracts many visitors who pay the premium non-resident price. The open space also is a nice change of pace from the concrete of Waikiki. I suggest looking at the space at Kaimuki High School where enrollment has shrunk and the school can be downsized. A new stadium could be part of the campus with much improved facilities. Completion of the long planned University Ave. bridge would improve traffic flow into and out of Waikiki and the stadium would be walking distance from the campus and Waikiki. I believe any urban redesign should involve the least amount of relocation and therefore the lease amount of construction.

  52. A-joe October 15, 2013 11:36 am

Every year this discussion of a new stadium comes up. We hashed it out back in ’07/’08. We made overhead shots of stadiums at the Ala Wai, Ching Field, Halawa and Kapolei. (Jason has the pics). The best solution is the current location. It has all the pluses that other sites didnt. Centrally located for the entire island to access. With a few modifications traffic flow in and out of the area is superior than any other location. Also, the area lend the possibility to not only have a stadium but generate revenue for UH through a shopping complex, office building, hotel and satellite government offices. The area can be constantly used beyond just football and sports. Other areas weren’t as diverse with possibilities.

    ? for the boola.

Meant to ask you this a couple of weeks ago. On the Pawn Stars a guy was trying to sell an old Miami Fins playbook. It was in a binder of about 50 pages. What got my attention was the playbook was for a specific game. This was for a game in the 70’s.

Do players have a master playbook and get another one for each game? More or less the game plan for that week?

  54. Don Weir October 15, 2013 11:41 am

Overjoyed to see like minds throwing ideas back and forth.
Aloha Stadium is a white elephant for UH Football.
Leasing it makes sense since UH has the expertise, as pointed out above, to run parking, food vending, and game control.

I agree that the AlaWai is underutilized as a transportation venue. Shuttles from UH could also alleviate the parking problem. Increase the ADA parking according to need and then find a price point to fill the limited parking and at the same time encourage water taxi/shuttle/bus service.

I did not attend Punahou (I did coach with Kale for several years however) so this comment is from a third part . Punahou has hired a regional support person for the mainland since the school has so many graduates located across the country. Punahou has several fundraisers in different states every year.
When Punahou played football in Seattle (2008) over 900 fans attended the luau located at UW. Over 1/2 of the attendees lived on the mainland. Punahou attire was for sale at the luau and was moving very fast. I believe that Punahou sees graduates on the mainland as a fundraising revenue stream that was underutilized, or untapped, prior to the regional coordinator hire.

Funny how many on this blog like A-House, formerUHAthlete, SteveM, et al, have great ideas and those ideas are worthy of serious consideration.
Boolaknaka’s idea of a viral type of fundraising is right on the money (so to speak) but this is not an idea I have heard about on upper or lower campus. Low cost and high reward seems to be a great combination.

  56. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 11:55 am

OK, this is sort of out of left field, which means back in my day, hans l’orange park waipahu, but I digress, so here is my rather bold prediction: for those of you who either are native Hawaiian (kanaka maoli) or track these issues, BO( the prez) has indicated that he would be open to giving Native Hawaiians federal recognition, via an executive order, on his way out of office, if congress does not do so by 2016.

Well, that presents a multitude of scenarios for the potential of a new stadium. As your probably aware, the KSBE is the single largest land holder in the state, and as well, federal recognition would probably come with some form of official transfer of lands to a domestic sovereign. Now, not getting into the weeds of the internal politics of what the governing body may look like, this new political entity could take an equity position in such a stadium, via both land and capital. Yes, it does seem quite attenuated, but if tribes can build billion dollar casinos, then this is not so far fetched. (just as disclosure and being transparent, this is the area of law/policy I am involved with at boola U.) In fact, native Hawaiians, are in most instances, in a far better place financially then many of the tribes in regards to land holdings and existing assets. Something to think about….

Re: Kaimuki High School’s enrollment has also been negatively affected by resetting of the district boundaries. So now, if you live behind Rainbows Drive-Inn in Kapahulu, you have to attend Kalani High. Look at a map, and it doesn’t make any sense. I suspect there are some influential folks on the East side who would like to see Kaimuki High closed, in order to keep Kalani High open. My question is why does East Oahu need two high schools, when many kids in the Kalani High District already attend Kaiser on GEs?

  58. boolakanaka October 15, 2013 12:00 pm

53–back in my day, aside from plays in the dirt–but seriously, depending on whether you were O or D, you had a playbook, then it was broken down in terms of the position you played. So, it had all the various D packages, and then sub packages, per your position. Every week, after the scouting report, a specific game plan was added to your booklet, and it then had specific responsibilities for each position, as well as the more general schematic. Thus, each week, you added a portion that was under the context of the next opponent….but again, that was about 25 or so years ago.

    51. Ala Wai: the Ala Wai GC is a horrible course, crammed into a space too small for a “real” course. There are no real features and not much fun to play (uninspiring). My suggestion is to build a municipal course at the present site at Sand Island (Ocean view, blank canvas, etc.). I’ve played at the Ala Wai manytimes due to its proximity to my house. I prefer to drive further out, to play at Pali, Ewa Villages, and even Makalena over Ala Wai. Playing Ala Wai: Hit ground balls off the tee, chip and putt, and you can shoot in the 80’s = no challenge/fun.

ppj2: For use as a navigable waterway, Ala Wai Canal would have to be widened and dredged. The bridges (McKully & Kalakaua) would have to be raised. There will be strong opposition from the canoe clubs that use the Ala Wai for training and storage of their canoes. The ILH utilizes the canal during their Kayak season for training and competition. Again, more opposition there as well. A new sports complex would have to incorporate (not exclude) our watersports heritage. How about a canal that could bring the water taxis “inside” the stadium, like a Disneyland ride? However I still think the traffic issues would have to be addressed first, and are critical to the discussion of whether or not an Ala Wai sports complex would be feasible.

  62. Leahi2 October 15, 2013 12:14 pm

Regarding the idea of using the Ala Wai golf course site for a new Stadium, I doubt if the tourist industry would go for that. I would think that they would fight tooth and nail against that proposal. Now consider that presently our program gets a lot of money from them (I think). The noise coming from a stadium in the near vicinity would be an unwanted distraction.

I hope you guys out there can come to the realization that not all tourists (let alone our own local residents) care about football or any of the events proposed for such an arena!
Now I hate to put a further damper on the subject matter but you realize that Kaimuki High School’s district was cut up because Kalani High School needed more enrollment. Palolo and Kapahulu, formerly Kaimuki HS district is now Kalani’s. Also consider the plight of a young 14 year old now living on 6th Ave in Kaimuki is told that he must attend Kalani HS. That same kid could just run down the hill in about 10 minutes and be at Kaimuki HS. But No, he now must catch the bus and go in the other direction to attend Kalani. How you figgah! Kaimuki’s dwindling student population? Redistricting? Oh yes Kaimuki’s district was expanded westward. but not by much.

    RE: #60
NotNasti — bridge height over the Ala Wai could be an issue, but it would be close. But the Ala Moana bridge is rather low as I recall. Maybe have to lower the boat roof a little. Other than that, the ferry/water taxi type I would expect will be no larger that the 80 pax shuttle used by the Navy at the Arizona Memorial. I suspect it has a draft of only 5 feet. Much smaller 20 pax boats w/outboards would easily fit and be dry and comfortable for the passengers.

Just pointing out that the canal, as is, could be a “road” that already exists. Just need some enterprising people. Hmmm, what kind/size of boats does Smith use for the Kauai Waialua River/Fern Grotto tours?

  64. Old School Dave October 15, 2013 12:39 pm

I think that the Ala Wai Golf Course will be prime beachfront property in another 50 years or so if the Global Warming folks are correct. Gotta have foresight when it comes to property management. As the late Jerry Ah Sam would say on those local tv ads: “Land is the basis of all wealth.” 🙂

  65. papajoe2 October 15, 2013 12:45 pm

Passed uder the Ala Wai Canal bridges in my canoe paddling days. It is kind of narrow. The canoe and ama doesn’t leave too much room. Boats going through there, must be quite narrow. Could be part refurbishing the canal should we build a stadium at the golf course. I remember when I was a young boy, they had those little boats you could rent, where the boat house is now at. Asked my dad if we could do that but he said that the water was pilau, even in those days. Fishermen stayed on their little stand for hours fishing for mostly mullet along the canal.

  66. bowwar October 15, 2013 12:53 pm

No sense building a new stadium when you only have a DII team trying to play DI…I agree with most of the bloggers that the physical talent appears to exist on the team, but the discipline and technique appears to be lacking. UH’s defense starting off good, but has hit hard times primarily due to its alignment IMHO. They should keep things simple and stay in the 4-3 with situational changes going to the 3-4…

As for offense, they should just stick with Schroeder and get rid of the QB controversy…Graham was a nice “come-on”, but really hasn’t demonstrated that he is truly the better QB.

Has anyone noted that most of the UH starters on offense and defense are former MAC recruits versus Chow’s recruits? Makes you wonder…

  67. A-House October 15, 2013 12:53 pm

If, and only if, UH wants their own stadium, I again float my idea of building a new, fewer seat w/”sky-boxes” in lower campus, but the stadium itself sits above the H1 Freeway.

Use “eminent domain” to purchase all the land from University Ave on the West to all the property mauka of King Street, but below the Humane Society property.

Build multi-story parking lot in this area which can be used daily for all people who need parking in this “no parking on the street area” – continue to generate income for UH to pay off the “bond”. Build “large” walkways from the parking structure to surround the stadium so fans can easily access their seats for football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, etc.

Create long on-ramps leading into the parking structure for H1, “east or west bound traffic”. However, the ramps should split for lower and upper parking as it nears the structure to allow faster in-out traffic. Entry can also be from University Ave or King Street.
If possible, contra flow out going traffic.

The makai most area of the “quarry” can be used for a parking area for all buses, emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, delivery types, etc). This will allow Murakami Stadium and the aquatic facilities to remain in place. Consider building a “cover” for the swimming pool and diving area.

Build-in football coaches offices that overlook Ching Field; weight room; lounge facilities; locker rooms; trophy room; dining areas for students and general public that is year round to generate revenue ( utilize the Culinary of the Pacific students from KCC, Leeward CC, etc. to operate the restaurants – this can be used as a “practical” course w/ grade for all ).

Use the TIM, to market the multiple uses of the facilities including “outside activities” such as concerts, professional games ( soccer ).

If UH will allow, utilize the “advance” students in College of Engineering at UH-Manoa and law students; construction students at HCC (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, etc.) to assist with the planning and construction of the facility. If cannot in the building of facility, then use them for the “maintenance” – HCC students would be graded, but not paid saving UH money on maintenance expenses.

If this should occur, then UH can dictate how the entire facility is run and it includes the exclusion of any food service currently associated with UH-Manoa.

Thus, there should be a strong push by UH administers for light rail to/from campus – think of the future!!!

fyi…hawaii athletics doesnt really get money from tourist, unless they attend a sporting event that charges admission.

they do have sponsors from the tourist industry, and those sponsors benefit greatly from hawaii athletics.

the sponsors benefit FROM hawaii athletics.

noise, come on be realistic. 6 home games this year. game over by 10 pm. where’s the noise for the other 359 days of the year?

get at least a dozen kanikapila block parties in waiks every year, with several stages of live music and food concessions causing road closures. throw in another half dozen parades too.

the real noise in waiks is from the damn private contractor garbage collectors and stupid car horns beeping every time an idiot locks and unlocks and locks their cars.

guess you dont know about the “noise” from the 15-20 concerts at the waikiki shell that brings out a couple thousand young drunks pissing all over the place.

i doubt losing the ala wai gc will happen anytime soon.

i think kalaeloa would be an ideal site to build a new sports complex.

  69. Old Diver October 15, 2013 1:11 pm

Senior leadership is not about getting in your teammates face and yelling at them. It’s about setting an example of working harder and smarter during training, practice and the game. Leadership is fostered and developed by coaches who themselves are leaders. The best coaches while installing discipline develop leadership skills in players by allowing them to think and contribute. Those players whether on defense or offense are called playmakers. I saw a spark of that for the first time this past Saturday in Sean Schroeder eyes. This is the time for Chow to allow Schroeder to become the first leader on this team in two years. And if Chow and his coaches start to coach instead of listening to themselves scream all day they may just find a few more.

  70. Down with... October 15, 2013 1:13 pm

    @66 Bowwar…on Mac recruits versus Chow’s

Question: would you rather have first team O and D made up of freshman and sophomores….how about you ask this question instead, how many DI schools play/start as many freshman (true/red) as Hawaii has in the last two years….besides of course of 4-5star freshman blue chippers at big schools

  72. Whats up October 15, 2013 1:24 pm

I have to agree with Liz that Sean Schroeder has proven he is the leader and starting QB of this team. Taylor Graham was starting to show he could lead this years team before he got hurt but until Sean Schroeder shows he is not a effective QB or otherwise. Taylor Graham should be 2nd string and consider this a medical redshirt year if Schroder continues to play lights out. But we all know in a flash Graham could be called up to replace Schroeder if thing go bad.

  73. madeinhawaii October 15, 2013 1:32 pm

With Sean, Chow has been using a spread/pistol formation. We’ve have a lot more passing plays and as a result, more yards and TDs – although some of the extra TDs and completions may be attributed to the staunchness or lack thereof of the defenses we have been facing lately.. If Taylor takes the helm, will we go back to the Pro set type formations? Run more? With all things being a lot more equal (athleticism wise), against the rest of the teams we play, with the exception of Wyoming , I can see the team enjoying more success in running the plays either way. Winning? That’s a different story. We can only be hopeful of that.

  74. PolyMom October 15, 2013 1:42 pm

Love all the ideas and conversation about the Ala Wai. Things change. Folks have to let go. The stadium could be used for all knds of things. High School football. Concerts like at the Holywood Bowl or Rose Bowl. They need 30,000 seats. And a huge parking structure. It could be like Washington where folks come to the games on their boats using the Ala Wai.

I got to say this, my hub wanted to buy the Warriors a drone. The latest technology for video work. Can travel everywhere with the team. Our kid who works at USC is now one of the leading experts in the US on unmanned drones. BJ’s response, to much wind. That’s BS. I hope BJ is not like most big corporations…if its not HIs idea, it’s a NO GO! Almost every team in the country are using drones. Farmers use drones.

BJ came in and praised the OSU fans for them volunteering at the Shoe. Now we can’t have any volunteers???? I dunno about this guy. He emailed 85,000 donors. We did not get an email from him. And we just donated 1500K for one persons Training Table during your telethon. Really? To who?

Thanks Don Weir for the fabulous dinner you are cooking in my kitchen. Can’t wait. This guy can cook!!!!

I agree that Chow has opened up the offense since Sean took over as QB. The thing about Sean is he has had the extra year of live game reps in 2012, that Graham and Woosley don’t have. Thats why Sean is putting up some big numbers because of his game experience he knows how to read defenses better at game speed than all the other QB’s on the roster. Right now Schroeder is the leader of this team, the comebacks, the never quit attitude, the toughness, the heart of a lion that the team has shown the past 3 games with Sean at the helm. Is the result of the team believing in Schroeder as the leader. There are a lot of players that bust there okoles off and make great plays but not all of them are the leader. The teams character is mirrors Sean’s character.

Liz Kauai has spoken, I can’t believe it. But you’re right Liz, even though we haven’t won YET, I still say that SS gives us the best chance to win. We don’t have time to watch TG “learn on the fly”. Scoring points is no longer our problem, it’s the Defense who can’t stop anybody from scoring. So this so-called “Scrimmage” makes absolutely no sense to me. We have our starting QB, Sean Schroeder. If anyone other than SS starts the next game then that tells me that Chow has given up on the season.

  77. jeezy33 October 15, 2013 2:09 pm

    76. Why do we keep having to go back to game reps to justify QB play??? How many QBs need 2 years to play these days? Rookie QBs in the NFL are ready to play now and so are college football players…

Marcus Mariota, Johnny Manziel, Tajh Jameis Winston, Christian Hackenburg, Jared Goff, Brett Hundley, Cody Fajardo, Rakeem Cato, Blake Bortles are a bunch of names who performed early on. Not expecting to land guys like that but I also don’t expect a QB to take 2-3 years to figure things out. If you can play, you can play.

  78. A-joe October 15, 2013 2:27 pm

Ala Wai has already been ruled out. Not not enough infrastructure to support such a facility to be built there. The community doesn’t want it. They already want to shutdown the Shell and the zoo. A stadium is out of the question.

Same is said for an on campus stadium. The traffic would be horrendous not only on gameday but on anyday that a function is held there. Residents in and of the surrounding area don’t want a stadium built on campus.

The ideal location is still it’s current one. May not seem exciting or sexy at the moment but it’s practicle.

  83. A-joe October 15, 2013 2:35 pm

    78. You’re exactly right. If you can play, you play. If you can’t play, you take one, two or three years to develop. We happen to have players of the latter caliber.

Gotta line up with what we got.

  84. Derek October 15, 2013 2:37 pm

Too many penalties. I can’t stand the off sides. That’s lack of focus and discipline. That’s a lack of coaching. Lack of imagination on offense? That a lack of coaching. Adjustments? That’s a lack of coaching. Too many deep passes equals lower completing percentage. I’m all for loosening the defense, but the situation sometimes leaves me wondering what the hell is going on out there, especially when you are trying to move the ball and the best thing to do at a certain time is to get a much needed first down, especially when the defense needs a blow to rest.

We do a very poor job in covering draws and screen plays, especially in 3rd and long situations. That can’t happen if you want to have a good defense. That’s a lack of coaching.

I’m not certain if Chow is really Head Coach material. Maybe there is some truth why he has been a long time assistant/offensive coordinator. Maybe he isn’t demanding excellence when he should.. After all, the buck stops with him. Maybe he’s too much of a nice guy and nice guys finish last. Maybe he needs to be an SOB. That’s probably not in his DNA. But, the thing we sorely need right now is a “great” QB. I’m dreaming that if we had Mariota we would be undefeated. I don’t know if Tuileta is great, is if Zwahlen is great. Whatever we have now, is not great. We need to keep looking for that “holy grail.” As a leader, Mr. Dino Babers is looking better all the time. When was the last time a Head Coach ended up the season 0-12 and kept his job? Does Ben Jay show the ultimate patience in sticking with Chow for another season? Does Chow hire an OC and let him call the plays? Is Chow spreading himself thin? Probably the understatement of the year. As the world turns!!!!!!

    Much Aloha Tsaiko Nation !

Today I went to Santa Monica JC representing upper campus for College Fair recruitment day from the Beach City. I sat in the shaded garden area besides the streaming water fountain right next to UCLA table. All I can say when Santa Monica students came out UCLA “mad female rep” became ANGRY because students were coming to RainbowCliff Hawaii Table and leaving poor UCLA table EMPTY which got Miss UCLA “mad female rep” to bring Santa Monica JC reps to move me from my spot because her complaint was this “area belonged to UC campus only” as my BIG smile to her while leaving “lady UCLA, it dosen’t matter where ever I go the ALOHA is too strong for students to RESIST as they follow me right in front of her face to my side walk table as she looked helpless through my aloha shirt shadow with 15 Santa Monica students following my every move !

150 students filled out interest cards from RainbowCliff table as future business majors, microbiology, marine biologist, premed, psychology, nursing, sports medicine, kineseology & pre law students are just EXCITED about UH from every great verb, noun, adjective out of this old rainbow warrior voice describing this OUTSTANDING University !

It was so GREAT of a day that I had as Santa Monica JC football players came over with one good looking athletic QB from Compton, California / left handed in the make up from my memory of Raphiel Cherry and the demeanor of Carl Kennebrew all 6’3” and a solid 185. Called UH coaches immediately in hopes of them scouting this QB with 5 other defensive backs filling out cards as a BIG safety from Venice HS was among them as I saw the reincarnation of Dana McClemore staring me right in my eyes.

SIMPLY THE BEST, BETTER THEN ALL THE REST!

Congrats UH I was simply AWESOME as upper campus realize ONE thing “sending RC always get the recruits no matter academic or athletic it’s a done deal !

I was just remembering some brothers I played with from Halawa, and they now live in Seattle–anywho, these soles are still hella strong, I saw them several years ago and they were into power-lifting. #11 I agree with your observations. Poor coaching…always one step behind in adjustment. At halftime they could not adjust and exploit UNLV and the substitution penalties is all coaching faults. I watched Chow on the sideline and all he did was pace and hell at the officials. Never did I see him go and give advise or coach up players while the defense was on the field.

I like the players attitude but #84 got baited into a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty letting the UNLV defensive back get under his skin.

We cannot continue to sustain these loses due to poor coaching. I think talent is equal across the board except for UNM and UNLV seem to have less talent.

Refer to #68 “Go Bows”: I hope you realize I didn’t say anything about making any money from the tourist. I Stated that the TOURIST INDUSTRY would oppose the Ala Wai site. You agree that there is moneys coming from tourist industry “sponsors”. Sure they make money from our UH athletic activity but they wouldn’t appreciate the NOISE. So you point out to the Waikiki Shell activity? Oh man there is no comparison. Consider the different locations and the sounds go down wind. The sounds of the Waikiki shell go downwind. The NOISE from the proposed Ala Wai site goes down wind directly into the Waikiki Area. I hope you can see that this is counterproductive. Now I don’t know about the young drunks who piss all over the place. Well if this is true wouldn’t it be worse at the Ala Wai site. There’s also comments about the traffick before and after game time. Waikiki is already a an over crowded place. In the final analysis though, you agree that the proposed Ala Wai site would not fly.

ST. You’re right! See what happens when there’s no impending game to talk about? The discussion ranges from building a multi-complex stadium near waikiki, to who can bench how much, to what get fo’ eat! To parapharase a regular contributor to this blog….is it almost Saturady (the 25th) yet??

  107. OH MY October 15, 2013 7:31 pm

Don’t understand the need for and/or discussion about a new stadium, regardless of whether it’s at the Ala Wai or not. We can barely fill half the seats at Aloha Stadium for most UH games and there are so many other pressing priorities for the State of Hawaii to deal with now and in the foreseeable future. Besides that, when is the State ever going to get money for a new stadium? Furthermore, don’t know if you know, but UH has one of the best stadiums in the MWC. See: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/top-four-best-football-stadiums-mountain-west-conference-001900390–ncaaf.html. Those who traveled to the UNLV game would certainly know this, having had to endure the cheap aluminum bench seats, dirt parking lot and smell from the sewage treatment plant at Sam Boyd Stadium.

There are a lot of people here that give SS a pass for the bulk of his play because he makes a handful of plays. I love the comebacks just as much as anybody. What I don’t like are the head scratching moments and the oh so frequent 3 and outs.

Go back and study TG’s playing time this year. Everyone agreed he deserved a pass for USC. He played better against OSU, and was showing progress until he got injured. Trust me when I say that over the past few games, TG has seen that he can trust his receivers to make plays and he will take chances on passes that he didn’t feel comfortable with in the beginning of the year.

I do agree that SS has great leadership skills, but the physical intangibles and consistency are just not there. I respect what he has done, but I still think we know what we get with him. I want to see how TG has learned and matured.

I know Jeezy doesn’t like the game experience excuse, but I think even he realizes that TG was improving each outing. I would really like to see him back in if he’s healthy.

EHOWZIT RAINBOWCLIFF! I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE PICS OF THAT COLLEGE FAIR WITH YOU AND ALL YOUR FOLLOWERS WALKING AWAY FROM THE UCLA LADY(?). IN FACT, WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE PICS OF YOU WHEN YOU CAME TO HAWAII A FEW MONTHS AGO.

  114. Konoman1 October 15, 2013 10:04 pm

Actually Aaron Price showed no leadership at all.

  115. Warrior Dave October 15, 2013 10:58 pm

#111, you got to be joking right??? That’s the reason I’m don’t defend why your statement is so full of holes. Doesn’t cost anything to dream.

St least when I say JJ would come back if Chow doesn’t succeed I can back it up with sound reasoning.

#114 Allan: UCLA mad lady rep just made herself looked silly as I just moved with my future Santa Monica Rainbow Warriors to sidewalk row and gather more at the table. I brought my camera but did not have time to take one picture as BEAUTIFUL SMJC students asking me so many questions on required gpa to attend UH, transfer credits needed, tuition cost, dorm living, Manoa Valley and do we have such & such a major as I answered all intelligently with my infectious smile.

My time coming back was WONDERFUL as I had many Tsaikos, friends and LWC members giving me so much aloha love that my wife and mother in law were just cherishing the moment. Hope it won’t be another 7 years until my next return to the gathering place.

Always Allan with much aloha kind sir !

All this stuff goes away with some wins…..we need to win and win soon. I will always support the Warriors and will heed Ben J’s call for a donation again. This will turnaround and I sure hope sooner than later—-Go Warriors
