Up here with PolyMom and Senor Pepe on the mainland in Hermosa Beach.
Part of our morning coffee discussion was how to involve more alumni in athletic events on the mainland: Regional coordinators: Major outreach: Part of the 3-4-5 yr plan??

Here are some throw out questions that floated around this morning;
1. how about taking over the Ala Wai golf course for a stadium?
2. how about selling all remaining tickets on game day no matter location in the stadium for $10?
3. how about UH leasing the stadium?

Happy belated Birfday to all those special October people!!

My own suggestion is that via the athletic department and development office, they make an identification of alums that will agree to donate $1,000, and that same person find 10 other like minded folks for a total of $11,000. And this would be multiplied by 100. This form of development is simply known as bundling, and then could be leveraged for an equal match from the legislature or the university itself, thus making the total over $2,000,000.

Towards that end, I agree to be the first one…..

King and Bubba have been nice surprises. (Except for King’s costly fumble vs UNLV when fighting for yards).

Jeezy, talent is definitely not the main issue. The main issue I see after seeing the boys play in Vegas, there is a lack of upperclassmen leadership. There isn’t any player getting in the face of his teammates telling them to step it up and holding guys accountable. That’s how the little mistakes get fixed. A coach yelling at a player is one thing (and deserved if its a mental error), but the best motivation comes from the team leaders and captains (Afusia, Samia and Yap were captains on Saturday).

I don’t see Afusia getting vocal in firing up the unit after good or bad play. Same goes for Samia and Yap. They are going about their business like everyone else. I don’t see Dailey or Laurel firing guys up either. Even JH-T just plays and doesn’t seem to get too emotional. Almost like UH has too many even tempered guys. I hope I’m wrong on this.

Colt Brennan was a fiery guy that pumped up the offense when things were rolling and was talking to guys when things weren’t going smoothly. The players rallied behind him. I do see Nequan Philips taking the leader role next year on defense.

I don’t see it on the field with this team, but there can be a rift between the upperclassmen from the old coach and the underclassmen of the new coach. Not saying that this is an issue with UH specifically, but it’s not uncommon when there’s a total regime change.

WSU went through awful in-fighting within the roster during in Leach’s 1st year. He’s totally cleaned house (basically 1/4 of roster was booted or quit), and looks like they are better now, even with a horribly mistake prone QB.

Colorado is going through a cleansing process with MacIntyre this year (I don’t hear CU fans calling for him to be fired after being completely non-competitive in Pac12 play this year. Lots of ‘we suck’ comments but no fire coach comments like some UH commenters started drumming up last year). There’s a decent chance CU loses to Charleston Southern this week.

20-FUHA–did you see my little observation from yesterday, was it just me, but was our backside flat consistently open for screen and bubble passes this past Saturday…?

Ala Wai Site: As more and more seniors go by the wayside, there will be less of a push-back from the “owners” of the Ala Wai “Country Club.” Their numbers have diminished to the point that it is noticeably easier to get a tee time and stand-by time at the golf course. I love the idea of turning the Ala Wai site into a sports complex/convention center/fair grounds. The proximity to Waikiki (hotels) would and acreage are ideal. I live in Kapahulu, and would be able to walk to the games. The deal breaker, and I’m not a civil engineer, will be ingress/egress to the Ala Wai area. Moving 30-40 thousand people in and out of Waikiki efficiently (without a mass transit line) may prove impossible. Could on/off ramps be built connecting H-1 to the Ala Wai? Probably, but at what cost? I would like an on-campus stadium. The apartments and homes mauka of the freeway would have to be condemned, and another parking structure built, but easier to plan from an infrastructure point of view.

To what A-House and NotNasti provided. Let’s get the rail done and get it to go to UH or as close as possible. Then as long as the stadium is on the Rail’s path, where it is shouldn’t matter all that much (at least for students).

Ala Wai golf course used to be a favorite practice driving range for the Japanese businessmen and tourists between their reserved rounds elsewhere. But since the Japanese don’t come in the numbers they used to (not enough hotel rooms) there are probably a lot less of them at the Ala Wai.

29–I agree with jeezy’s hardball analogy. Strength up the middle, always reflects the stoutness and leadership of the team. Even in my day, from Ralph, to Niko, to Rich on the backend, you had a consistent line of strength.

Totally enjoyed WATCHING the game last Sat. The stream from the MWC was actually pretty good. What happened to the streaming options from OC?

Hawaii is ranked #27 nationwide in passing yards per game according to the current NCAA statistics. Though Sean Schroeder has technically appeared in 5 games, in actuality he has only played in less than 3 full games. If his game statistics were calculated at 3 games (instead of 5), he would be ranked second in the nation in passing yards per game. I know it is just a statistic, but pretty impressive. For the few of you, who continue to criticize his efforts, I thought this statistic provides a better indication of his performance this season.

22… No I didn’t see the comment, but Yeah, UH got caught in man underneath on some of the swing passes and Art Laurel got matched up vs the RB. He doesn’t have the speed to cover in the flat one on one. Cornett and Thomas were both getting the corner with Laurel in pursuit.

Also, TJ and Garcia-Williams all were a little out of control when trying to tackle the RB or WR in the short flat. The initial pursuit was very good, but when the UNLV player cut up field, the 1st UH defender arriving went flying past the ball carrier. They just have to break down their steps… If they were a little more under control, they make the tackle or usher to the sideline for short gains. I’m not too concerned about this because UH is getting to the edge contain and it’s an easy fix.

Jeezy — OLine pass protection has gotten much better now that UH is playing MWC defenses. SS was barely touched Saturday… only 1 sack and only a couple hurries. Coaching will always be questioned in losses, but the play calling is way more diverse and creative now. I mentioned the other day the fly sweep package was very successful. The stupid false start penalties are individual mistakes. When running the fast tempo, there’s no reason for any false starts because there’s little to no cadence being yelled by QB. They certainly aren’t going “on 2” or doing hard counts at the pace they are playing at.

I think MWC offensive coordinators are starting to attack Yap and Woodard on the run… Fresno, SJSU, and UNLV all got 200yards rushing on UH. UNLV was the only one of those three considered to have a good run game. The bigs (Samia, Malepeai, and Matagiese) are doing their job and clogging the middle. Cornett only averaged a couple yards when running in the A gaps. Virtually all the big run plays given up are starting in the B and C gaps and occasionally on a sweep. SJSU and Fresno got run yards because UH was only playing 3 up front in effort to corral their quick passing offenses.

SJSU was just a bad game by all units on UH. Easily the worst game of year. So there’s not much value in drawing anything from that one.

The one thing that I picked up on since Jones left is that the WRs are body catching the ball way more than before. JJ was adamant about WRs using their hands. Once Salas and Pilares graduated, the drops have become an issue since 2011. Virually all of Gant’s drops are when he lets the ball come to his body. He doesn’t drop anything when reaching out with his hands. He didn’t drop any of the jump balls vs Fresno.

Putting on my amateur def coordinator hat and keeping the same schemes (4-3 & 3-3-5) to keep things realistic….
For the 4-3, no major changes other than adding Daily-Lyles to the DE rotation to keep them Yap and Woodard fresh. The other suggestion I had was to give Kennedy more work, but that appears its going to be a reality. Adding Daily-Lyles and Kennedy bumps the rotation to 7 main players. Right now, its primarily Samia, Woodard, Yap, Matagiese, & Malepeai are the main 5. Tepa and a few others only getting spot duty. With the fast tempo offenses, there needs to be 7 or 8 guys rotating.

For the 3-3-5, I would have Samia, Matagiese and Malepeai up front and move Yap or Woodard to a 2 point stance. That way, in the 3 man front, there’s enough beef to hold up against the run. Then you would rotate Kennedy and Yap/Woodard to round the rotation, plus the others here and there. UH is very versatile in the LBs and DBs so there’s a number of combinations that can be used and has been used.

UH currently has been using Yap, Woodard + 1 big on the 3 man front and the 260lb Yap & Woodard just can’t hold up vs the OTs pounding down on them the whole game.

41/24… A stadium at Ala Wai would be cool, and construction wouldn’t be that tough, but it would be a horrendous nightmare for traffic, far worse than Aloha stadium.

There’s no room in Manoa valley, Diamond Head would be a fun location, but there’s zero chance that location is passed since DH is iconic and the upper-crust would allow a stadium near their area.

If I had $500 million to spend for stadium, it would be in lower campus. You can build all the athletic offices and training rooms within the stadium, so the current office building is expendable. Current weight room in SSC would now just be for non-football sports. You have just enough space to build an intimate 40,000 seat stadium (like original Autzen Stadium in Oregon) on top of Ching Field without messing with Rainbow Stadium or the softball field. They would have to reroute and widen lower campus road. Like every other on campus stadium in America, rest of college parking lots become game day parking lots charging $5-$10 per car depending on location. Koa Anuenue gets one maybe two floors of parking in the quarry, the rest is $20 game day parking fee. Students get free admission. Keep ticket price same, but offer fat discount for season ticket and parking packages until attendance is healthy again.

Every year this discussion of a new stadium comes up. We hashed it out back in ’07/’08. We made overhead shots of stadiums at the Ala Wai, Ching Field, Halawa and Kapolei. (Jason has the pics). The best solution is the current location. It has all the pluses that other sites didnt. Centrally located for the entire island to access. With a few modifications traffic flow in and out of the area is superior than any other location. Also, the area lend the possibility to not only have a stadium but generate revenue for UH through a shopping complex, office building, hotel and satellite government offices. The area can be constantly used beyond just football and sports. Other areas weren’t as diverse with possibilities.

Overjoyed to see like minds throwing ideas back and forth.
Aloha Stadium is a white elephant for UH Football.
Leasing it makes sense since UH has the expertise, as pointed out above, to run parking, food vending, and game control.

I agree that the AlaWai is underutilized as a transportation venue. Shuttles from UH could also alleviate the parking problem. Increase the ADA parking according to need and then find a price point to fill the limited parking and at the same time encourage water taxi/shuttle/bus service.

I did not attend Punahou (I did coach with Kale for several years however) so this comment is from a third part . Punahou has hired a regional support person for the mainland since the school has so many graduates located across the country. Punahou has several fundraisers in different states every year.
When Punahou played football in Seattle (2008) over 900 fans attended the luau located at UW. Over 1/2 of the attendees lived on the mainland. Punahou attire was for sale at the luau and was moving very fast. I believe that Punahou sees graduates on the mainland as a fundraising revenue stream that was underutilized, or untapped, prior to the regional coordinator hire.

Funny how many on this blog like A-House, formerUHAthlete, SteveM, et al, have great ideas and those ideas are worthy of serious consideration.
Boolaknaka’s idea of a viral type of fundraising is right on the money (so to speak) but this is not an idea I have heard about on upper or lower campus. Low cost and high reward seems to be a great combination.

OK, this is sort of out of left field, which means back in my day, hans l’orange park waipahu,but I digress, so here is my rather bold prediction: for those of you who either are native Hawaiian (kanaka maoli) or track these issues, BO( the prez) has indicated that he would be open to giving Native Hawaiians federal recognition, via an executive order, on his way out of office, if congress does not do so by 2016.

Well, that presents a multitude of scenarios for the potential of a new stadium. As your probably aware, the KSBE is the single largest land holder in the state, and as well, federal recognition would probably come with some form of official transfer of lands to a domestic sovereign. Now, not getting into the weeds of the internal politics of what the governing body may look like, this new political entity could take an equity position in such a stadium, via both land and capital. Yes, it does seem quite attenuated, but if tribes can build billion dollar casinos, then this is not so far fetched. (just as disclosure and being transparent, this is the area of law/policy I am involved with at boola U.) In fact, native Hawaiians, are in most instances, in a far better place financially then many of the tribes in regards to land holdings and existing assets. Something to think about….

53–back in my day, aside from plays in the dirt–but seriously, depending on whether you were O or D, you had a playbook, then it was broken down in terms of the position you played. So, it had all the various D packages, and then sub packages, per your position. Every week, after the scouting report, a specific game plan was added to your booklet, and it then had specific responsibilities for each position, as well as the more general schematic. Thus, each week, you added a portion that was under the context of the next opponent….but again, that was about 25 or so years ago.

51. Ala Wai: the Ala Wai GC is a horrible course, crammed into a space too small for a “real” course. There are no real features and not much fun to play (uninspiring). My suggestion is to build a municipal course at the present site at Sand Island (Ocean view, blank canvas, etc.). I’ve played at the Ala Wai manytimes due to its proximity to my house. I prefer to drive further out, to play at Pali, Ewa Villages, and even Makalena over Ala Wai. Playing Ala Wai: Hit ground balls off the tee, chip and putt, and you can shoot in the 80’s = no challenge/fun.

ppj2: For use as a navigable waterway, Ala Wai Canal would have to be widened and dredged. The bridges (McKully & Kalakaua) would have to be raised. There will be strong opposition from the canoe clubs that use the Ala Wai for training and storage of their canoes. The ILH utilizes the canal during their Kayak season for training and competition. Again, more opposition there as well. A new sports complex would have to incorporate (not exclude) our watersports heritage. How about a canal that could bring the water taxis “inside” the stadium, like a Disneyland ride? However I still think the traffic issues would have to be addressed first, and are critical to the discussion of whether or not an Ala Wai sports complex would be feasible.

Regarding the idea of using the Ala Wai golf course site for a new Stadium, I doubt if the tourist industry would go for that. I would think that they would fight tooth and nail against that proposal. Now consider that presently our program gets a lot of money from them (I think). The noise coming from a stadium in the near vicinity would be an unwanted distraction.

I hope you guys out there can come to the realization that not all tourists (let alone our own local residents) care about football or any of the events proposed for such an arena!
Now I hate to put a further damper on the subject matter but you realize that Kaimuki High School’s district was cut up because Kalani High School needed more enrollment. Palolo and Kapahulu, formerly Kaimuki HS district is now Kalani’s. Also consider the plight of a young 14 year old now living on 6th Ave in Kaimuki is told that he must attend Kalani HS. That same kid could just run down the hill in about 10 minutes and be at Kaimuki HS. But No, he now must catch the bus and go in the other direction to attend Kalani. How you figgah! Kaimuki’s dwindling student population? Redistricting? Oh yes Kaimuki’s district was expanded westward. but not by much.

I think that the Ala Wai Golf Course will be prime beachfront property in another 50 years or so if the Global Warming folks are correct. Gotta have foresight when it comes to property management. As the late Jerry Ah Sam would say on those local tv ads: “Land is the basis of all wealth.” 🙂

No sense building a new stadium when you only have a DII team trying to play DI…I agree with most of the bloggers that the physical talent appears to exist on the team, but the discipline and technique appears to be lacking. UH’s defense starting off good, but has hit hard times primarily due to its alignment IMHO. They should keep things simple and stay in the 4-3 with situational changes going to the 3-4…

As for offense, they should just stick with Schroeder and get rid of the QB controversy…Graham was a nice “come-on”, but really hasn’t demonstrated that he is truly the better QB.

Has anyone noted that most of the UH starters on offense and defense are former MAC recruits versus Chow’s recruits? Makes you wonder…

fyi…hawaii athletics doesnt really get money from tourist, unless they attend a sporting event that charges admission.

they do have sponsors from the tourist industry, and those sponsors benefit greatly from hawaii athletics.

get at least a dozen kanikapila block parties in waiks every year, with several stages of live music and food concessions causing road closures. throw in another half dozen parades too.

the real noise in waiks is from the damn private contractor garbage collectors and stupid car horns beeping every time an idiot locks and unlocks and locks their cars.

guess you dont know about the “noise” from the 15-20 concerts at the waikiki shell that brings out a couple thousand young drunks pissing all over the place.

i doubt losing the ala wai gc will happen anytime soon.

i think kalaeloa would be an ideal site to build a new sports complex.

Senior leadership is not about getting in your teammates face and yelling at them. It’s about setting an example of working harder and smarter during training, practice and the game. Leadership is fostered and developed by coaches who themselves are leaders. The best coaches while installing discipline develop leadership skills in players by allowing them to think and contribute. Those players whether on defense or offense are called playmakers. I saw a spark of that for the first time this past Saturday in Sean Schroeder eyes. This is the time for Chow to allow Schroeder to become the first leader on this team in two years. And if Chow and his coaches start to coach instead of listening to themselves scream all day they may just find a few more.

i heard ‘bama doesnt have any on campus parking, yet 90K attend with most walking at least a mile to the stadium. on game day just use the ala wai gc as a parking lot if they were to have an on campus arena.

With Sean, Chow has been using a spread/pistol formation. We’ve have a lot more passing plays and as a result, more yards and TDs – although some of the extra TDs and completions may be attributed to the staunchness or lack thereof of the defenses we have been facing lately.. If Taylor takes the helm, will we go back to the Pro set type formations? Run more? With all things being a lot more equal (athleticism wise), against the rest of the teams we play, with the exception of Wyoming , I can see the team enjoying more success in running the plays either way. Winning? That’s a different story. We can only be hopeful of that.

I agree that Chow has opened up the offense since Sean took over as QB. The thing about Sean is he has had the extra year of live game reps in 2012, that Graham and Woosley don’t have. Thats why Sean is putting up some big numbers because of his game experience he knows how to read defenses better at game speed than all the other QB’s on the roster. Right now Schroeder is the leader of this team, the comebacks, the never quit attitude, the toughness, the heart of a lion that the team has shown the past 3 games with Sean at the helm. Is the result of the team believing in Schroeder as the leader. There are a lot of players that bust there okoles off and make great plays but not all of them are the leader. The teams character is mirrors Sean’s character.

76. Why do we keep having to go back to game reps to justify QB play??? How many QBs need 2 years to play these days? Rookie QBs in the NFL are ready to play now and so are college football players…

Marcus Mariota, Johnny Manziel, Tajh Jameis Winston, Christian Hackenburg, Jared Goff, Brett Hundley, Cody Fajardo, Rakeem Cato, Blake Bortles are a bunch of names who performed early on. Not expecting to land guys like that but I also don’t expect a QB to take 2-3 years to figure things out. If you can play, you can play.

Today I went to Santa Monica JC representing upper campus for College Fair recruitment day from the Beach City. I sat in the shaded garden area besides the streaming water fountain right next to UCLA table. All I can say when Santa Monica students came out UCLA “mad female rep” became ANGRY because students were coming to RainbowCliff Hawaii Table and leaving poor UCLA table EMPTY which got Miss UCLA “mad female rep” to bring Santa Monica JC reps to move me from my spot because her complaint was this “area belonged to UC campus only” as my BIG smile to her while leaving “lady UCLA, it dosen’t matter where ever I go the ALOHA is too strong for students to RESIST as they follow me right in front of her face to my side walk table as she looked helpless through my aloha shirt shadow with 15 Santa Monica students following my every move !

150 students filled out interest cards from RainbowCliff table as future business majors, microbiology, marine biologist, premed, psychology, nursing, sports medicine, kineseology & pre law students are just EXCITED about UH from every great verb, noun, adjective out of this old rainbow warrior voice describing this OUTSTANDING University !

It was so GREAT of a day that I had as Santa Monica JC football players came over with one good looking athletic QB from Compton, California / left handed in the make up from my memory of Raphiel Cherry and the demeanor of Carl Kennebrew all 6’3” and a solid 185. Called UH coaches immediately in hopes of them scouting this QB with 5 other defensive backs filling out cards as a BIG safety from Venice HS was among them as I saw the reincarnation of Dana McClemore staring me right in my eyes.

Congrats UH I was simply AWESOME as upper campus realize ONE thing “sending RC always get the recruits no matter academic or athletic it’s a done deal !

Sasa, 89, and 90…Halawa is the sh*t. Its perfect, park near Aiea Elementary, take a tour of Pearl Harbor, or go swimming at Ford Island like we did small kid time, eat at Shiros, and then play volleyball with the fafas–perfect.

I was just remembering some brothers I played with from Halawa, and they now live in Seattle–anywho, these soles are still hella strong, I saw them several years ago and they were into power-lifting. And these guys aren’t really young bucks, but I saw that they had a combined bench press of over 1150 pounds…yes, read that correctly 1150 pounds!!! Dem Aleaga brothers is yoked out.

If you ever have friends from the mainland come to Aloha Stadium, maybe see their alma mater play UH, and they are not part of of big group, this is important phrase to know in Halawa, Fa’amolemole, aua le fasi a’u.

Don’t understand the need for and/or discussion about a new stadium, regardless of whether it’s at the Ala Wai or not. We can barely fill half the seats at Aloha Stadium for most UH games and there are so many other pressing priorities for the State of Hawaii to deal with now and in the foreseeable future. Besides that, when is the State ever going to get money for a new stadium? Furthermore, don’t know if you know, but UH has one of the best stadiums in the MWC. Those who traveled to the UNLV game would certainly know this, having had to endure the cheap aluminum bench seats, dirt parking lot and smell from the sewage treatment plant at Sam Boyd Stadium.

All this stuff goes away with some wins…..we need to win and win soon. I will always support the Warriors and will heed Ben J’s call for a donation again. This will turnaround and I sure hope sooner than later—-Go Warriors
