Schroeder to start against CSU

Coach Norm Chow announced that quarterback Sean Schroeder will take the first UH snap in tomorrow’s homecoming game against Colorado State at Aloha Stadium.

Chow said there will be roles crafted for Woolsey and Graham against CSU.

The quarterbacks were notified of the plans this week.

It will be Schroeder’s second consecutive start officially, although he probably should have been credited as the starter for the San Jose State game. In the opening formation, Ikaika Woolsey was at quarterback and Schroeder was aligned as a receiver. After that, Schroeder took over at quarterback.

The past three games, Schroeder is credited with 69-of-123 passing for 988 yards and 10 touchdowns. The WB reviewed the past game against UNLV and noted that two of Woolsey’s incompletions were mistakenly credited to Schroeder.

Safety Marrell Jackson is not expected to play while recovering from a thumb injury. He underwent surgery last week.

  12. Warrior Dave October 25, 2013 6:14 am

Interesting decision to start SS at QB. I agree with the choice but it hurts Graham’s progression for next year. I expect Chow to have a quick hook if SS should struggle early.

    Good morning, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers! 😀

Never thought LAVA was a UH fan.

  23. Jjay October 25, 2013 7:38 am

Warriors need the win Saturday. No turnovers and stupid penalties Come on Man ! The Vegas debacle was major depression for all who went there. We lose Saturday. Chow , pack your bags!

  24. lava October 25, 2013 7:56 am

This isn’t UH football, Tom. The longer Chow remains at the helm, the longer the team will struggle to get back to respectability. If we win a game, it is because the other team didn’t show up, not because of anything Norm did.

I’m not a fan of being on ESPN’s bottom 10. I am a fan of entertaining football, and haven’t seen any from UH for a long time.

  26. Old Diver October 25, 2013 8:18 am

Ouch! Safety Marrell Jackson had surgery for a thumb injury. Must have been horrific as how many of us had our thumbs laid flat back in games in our day and just grinned and bared it. Prayers go out to him. Heal fast Marrell, you too good like local eggs…

    Grats to Schroeder….Now play like it’s the 4th quarter and we’re behind 14. 🙂

  33. NotNasti October 25, 2013 8:56 am

Wasabi, take a deep breath, let it out slowly. Think roses and marshmallows. Your blood pressure is too high. Why all the hate on Polymom? Have you met her? Do you know her or her family? Be nice to people. You will be paid back in spades.

    Consistency.

The one constant UH has shown in every game, besides losing, is UH has started a different lineup at O L. This week is no different.

  39. boolakanaka October 25, 2013 9:05 am

33–Wise and kind counsel, Nasti. And in any event if your going to hate on someone, hate me–I’m bloviation and pretentious personified. It was my life long goal growing up, plus I thrive on harsh words

Oh, my roomie Vince Sides has thumb surgery, and although it sounds straightforward, that bay boy is problematic, infections, and the thumb not setting properly, and with all the jamming of a DB, you are pretty much in continual pain.

  40. wasabi October 25, 2013 9:10 am

33- never met her but I know what she drives, who she knows, and that her kids are ivy league smart. And she’s besties with chow…and that she is very successful. All that from skimming a blog…a lot of bragging going on…

  41. boolakanaka October 25, 2013 9:17 am

41–Part of my struggle growing-up in Halawa was that we never had any pretentious folks, not even high maka-maka. So, it became my quest and goal, gosh it feels good to get so close to a goal….plus, its better than getting caught in intermediate boys bathroom by a fafa and have her/him say ” bullie, search-take!!?”

    Morning, Gang!

    Homecoming Game Day Eve!

Hate when my thumb gets jammed! Glad I haven’t had major work done on either thumb to this day! The other fingers were bad enough. Can’t imagine thumb work! Ugh!

If we play every series (offense, defense, and special teams) like we’ve got a serious purpose, we’ll surprise lots of folks, especially the doubters. Any other approach, and we prove the doubters right.

    Let’s do this, Warriorz!

Oh, and… please keep the air head mistakes and penalties to a minimum! Let’s not make this any harder than it will already be.

    Have a great day, everyone!

Why would Chow release this information, it would be better to surprise a team by having different packages for 3 different QBs.

  48. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 25, 2013 9:51 am

No matter what the season’s record may be, we will come out champions in the “most unique qb situation” category in div 1a Lol.

  49. boolakanaka October 25, 2013 9:51 am

43…legally I admit to nothing. That said, I was never the bradhha doing the “hi’jacking”, although I will confess, many folks use to have out door freezers in their garage back in the day. Suffice it to say, many a cock-a-roached T-bone and ribeye wen puleo by the park, near our house—goodtimes.

  50. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 25, 2013 9:51 am

We should just list the starting QB as Sean I. Graham.

I WOULDN’T CLASSIFY CHOW AS A JERK; HOWEVER, I’M NOT INCLINED TO RESCIND MY ETHNICITY RENOUNCEMENT, DECLARED AFTER THE 3RD GAME LAST YEAR, ANYTIME SOON EITHER.

  52. papajoe2 October 25, 2013 9:59 am

I kind of wanted Graham to start, and if not doing well, have SS come in. Now if SS is having a bad day, then what do we do?

  53. primo123 October 25, 2013 10:03 am

if we have two QB’s fighting for playing time, its a QB controversy.

What is it when you have THREE QB’s fighting for playing time???

    Good morning everyone!

If Hawaii had a quarterback who threw 123 times in the last 3 games and was the starter all last year, I expect opposing teams might have noticed him and would not be unprepared should he enter the game…or even start. 🙂

The secret is 3 quarterback will play in different offensive schemes. I think…

  57. NotNasti October 25, 2013 10:10 am

    53. Primo: three QB battle = menageaversy.

  58. Whats up October 25, 2013 10:13 am

Why all the animosity on the blog today, supposed to save that for after a Hawaii loss like it’s always been, not the day before a game? Or when the knuckle head Independent Thinker make one of his not so intelligent post? We all need to calm down, I donated to Hawaii Football too, but if Poly Mom wants to give Chow some credit for thanking her for her donation, thats fine. I don’t think anybody here is millionares, except maybe Tsai, just kidding!

    41. Boola, this past Tuesday, a student of mine (Trial Practice) was picking up a client to defend in the district court. Just a hunch, but after looking at the name on the file, and scanning the crowded waiting room, I told him, “you see that 6 foot, 300 pound Samoan man wearing the tight flowery blouse with the handbag and ladies sunglasses? I think that’s your client.” And she/he stood up when her/his name was called. The charge? He was arrested for slapping (5-10 minutes) a man who was teasing his fellow fafa. True story.

  60. Candy October 25, 2013 10:19 am

It is past time for a win. Good luck to whichever quarterback(s) play and a good performance from the rest of the team–offense, defense, and special teams.

  61. boolakanaka October 25, 2013 10:27 am

59–Makes me miss home!! So, although not a Hawai’i story, I was supervising trial practice, in criminal court, and this delightful true story popped up.

So, this was one of those “morality” cases state v. acme stipclub (fictional), and it was a club not allowing total nudity. So, the DA had the undercover vice officer on the stand, and was walking the officer through questions to establish, the dancers were taking off more clothes than legally allowed. So, he gets to this question: (sorry, slightly PG13, so stop reading if you are easily offended), “so, at this point, she took off her bottoms, did you see her vulva?” The vice officer responded straight-faced ” No, I did not see the car she left in…”

    Gotta love cops.

  65. Former UH Athlete October 25, 2013 11:13 am

Tough luck for M. Jackson. The good news is that it gives Travon an opportunity for more playing time, even though it’s not his primary position.

Not necessarily loving the 3 QB approach, but it’ll be interesting. Having Woosley do what he did vs UNLV is fine because it’s a special play package, but multiple QBs running the main offense typically isn’t good.

I understand SS getting the start because the offense has been able to move the ball with him running it. TG is still an unknown at this point, but he needs more playing time to develop. Getting bum rushed vs USC and OSU was a terrible way for him to get back into live football after a long layoff. He was starting to find a rhythm vs Nevada-Reno but then was injured in the 1st half.

I’m hoping for a balanced pass:run ratio vs CSU and UH trying to control the clock. The defense has been on the field for way too many plays in MWC play this year. MWC defenses in general just don’t have the talent or depth to defend 85+ plays without giving up a ton of points.

  71. primo123 October 25, 2013 11:55 am

Does anyone think the UH offense is taking advantage of the opponents defense by running plays without a huddle?

If not, then they should huddle up and slow it down.

If they going 3 and out, at least give the defense a couple of extra mins to sit and catch their breath.

    Jus wonderin…..

    Good day, Tsaikos!
Only three home games left. Camouflage unis for Army game. When do we wear our retro unis? Homecoming or against SD State?

  75. Former UH Athlete October 25, 2013 12:22 pm

71… I’m fine with no-huddle, because you prevent the defense from disguising what they do (if they are that advanced), but I just want UH to take their time once they see the defensive alignment. If the defense is in 4-3 and the DTs covering up both A gaps, please audible the run play to go to the B or C gaps. That’s not hard to do and only takes a few seconds to make the adjustment. If the defense is showing cover 1, audible to the deep multiple deep routes. If the safeties are showing a deep cover 2, adjust the routes to attack the open space underneath.

If UH catches the defense in a personnel mismatch, then go fast to prevent the defense from matching up. If you have a personnel advantage, then it’s just executing to exploit the advantage. Once the D gets their subs in, then slow it back down and get things right.

Going too fast and running into a prepared defense is stupid… it just makes you go 3 and out faster. Plus more and more teams are running fast tempo, so their defenses are are more prepared to defend it.

After watching Brady and P. Manning run their versions of no-huddle, they quickly get to the line as if they are going fast, then hold up, make their adjustments, then snap the ball with less than 10 on the play clock. On some drives, they go really fast, but on most, they take their time even though they are no-huddle.

  76. A-House October 25, 2013 12:36 pm

me thinks that Dave Shoji is making the same mistake like Chow in being to predictable

in the last 2 VB losses, the opponent loaded up on Hartong and they kept blocking her spikes – same happened last night – Hartong got her kills, but using her as a decoy would have other hitters with a maximum of “one-on-one” and an excellent chance of burying a kill

yes, Emily H is a very good player and will get her kills, but perhaps not the best use of strategy to keep winning

if the MWC VB keeps going like it has, Hawaii will definitely be on the outside looking in and will probably lose its top 10 ranking – yet, on a brighter side CSNU can make a move in the rankings as Hawaii falls

has CSNU beaten Hawaii twice this season – here and away?

  77. Moocher October 25, 2013 12:37 pm

ss starting is good. announcing it early lets him dig deep and get mentally set and vision things.

graham, he needs to take the job away from SS if he wants to be the QB this year. the two of them pushing each other will make each better.

next year, the QB will decided by the line. if the line is solid TG is the qb. if the line is porous, woolsley will get the job for his quick feet as a last resort option. i say this because next year has to be the turn around year and wins need to come.

in my opinion it will be Aaron Z who will truly benefit from all of this. by the time he gets here, if he gets here, chow will have recruited a monster team for us. which means all the more the team needs to turn the corner next year.

    go bows! beat the lambs!

  78. jeezy33 October 25, 2013 12:42 pm

    77. If we keep losing, this current recruiting class is going to be bad… Last years class was successful somewhat on the selling point of being part of a turnaround… Harder to sell that this year if team isn’t winning at all..

  79. Former UH Athlete October 25, 2013 12:44 pm

74… I would love to see the old retro uniforms for future Homecoming games. That would be awesome.

Tonight’s Boise St vs BYU game will be interesting. BYU is favored by 7 in Provo, which is a great home field advantage.

I’m leaning BYU because Boise’s #1 QB Southwick just had surgery and is out. Hedrick is not a good thrower, plus this is his first college start. Hedrick is a good runner. If you like quality passing offenses, best not to watch this game. Taysom Hill is actually a worse passer than Tim Tebow, but that kid can really run.

Taysom Hill is very comparable to Taylor Martinez at Nebraska. Good speed, great instincts, great runner, horrible passer.

I’m predicting a low scoring game as Boise St will likely struggle on offense plus BYU’s defense is pretty solid up front. Both teams can run the ball so the clock will move pretty smoothly. Boise’s defense is solid again and Peterson is a superior coach to Mendenhall, so I think Boise will be able to somewhat contain Hill on the ground and force him to beat them with his arm.

Time for a rebound this week as I got SKUNKED (0-5) last week… Season total now 21-17.

Under 61.5 total BSU v BYU
Hawaii (+4) vs CSU — got lucky on this line, now it’s (+2.5) at some locations
Over 55 total Hawaii vs CSU
    Fresno St (-7.5) at SDSU
Over 63 total Fresno St at SDSU
Under 68 total UNLV vs Nevada

    — I think somebody’s defense will kinda-sorta step up in the Battle for Fremont Cannon. No data shows that they will, but kooky things happen in rivalry games. Reno takes this game very seriously, so the defense might show up for the 2nd time this season???

  80. jeezy33 October 25, 2013 1:12 pm

les not forget about the Punahou QB, if he keeps to his commitment, for he will have1 year under his belt and be in football shape before Zwahlen arrives in “poor” condition as the church leaves very little time to train

I will agree, from what I saw in his video, that he is multi-talented with speed, quickness, elusive, strong arm, and can ‘punt” da ball

  82. gobows October 25, 2013 1:24 pm

Even if UH is 0-12 this year, Chow will be back next year. This years team is scoring a lot more points and not getting dirty lickin’ every week like last year. HOWEVER, he will be expected to be bowl eligible.

  92. Warrior Dave October 25, 2013 2:30 pm

    Primo,

If Chow has a losing record next year, there should be serious discussions with major boosters to buy out the 2 remaining years. I doubt Chow would resign if he has a losing record next year.

HOWEVER, if he’s 6 wins 7 losses next year, UH Administrstion and major boosters might give him a make or break 4th year. At end of 4th year, No bowl, he gotta go!!!

watching BYU V BSU. Lots of false starts by BYU running the same hurry up offense. Must be the coaching.

take it easy. most people could see that wasn’t a serious comment, but a facetious one.

Oh, so that’s what our offense is supposed to look like. Now I get it. ^_^

  98. Kapahulu October 25, 2013 3:38 pm

    From Hawaii News Now:
Former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan has signed a letter of intent to play in the Arena Football League, according to an image posted to Brennan’s Instagram account.

“I’m a man of my word… Back to the game!” Brennan wrote as the caption of the photo. “Got a couple weeks to let it sink in, then time to train and get ready!”

Brennan has been out of professional football since June of 2012, when he was released by the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.

At this time, it is unclear which AFL team Brennan intends to play for.

Lot of passes to the TE and H backs. Good running game and people holding onto the ball. Hope we get there on Saturday.

Oh, and a very stout defense.

  100. papajoe2 October 25, 2013 3:53 pm

Colt should have played earlier. A lot of NFL teams are looking for a QB. By signing earlier, and doing well, maybe they might look at him for a quick fix.

  101. Don Weir October 25, 2013 4:09 pm

    Warrior Dave,
Ever notice that the major boosters are listed as donating to UH Athletics not necessarily to the football program?
I doubt that Na Koa can come up a buyout sum. There were several major boosters who donated a combined $150+k for the Na Koa Telethon. This is out of a combined estimated net of $220k from all of the call ins. With this sum in mind if the buyout is for three years I’m not sure who is going to step up and do a bailout. I do not believe neither the University nor the tax paying public will allow the buyout to come from within UH.

On another note; I received a personal thank you from the head coach for cooking for the former players and coaches at the telethon. It was a manini donation but I appreciated the consideration.

    Brennan to the Rams. =P

    Good Friday Evening Folks!
Good news for Schroeder’s start tomorrow! Go Bow’s!
Let’s get it started and win out the rest of the way!
    Boy, Boise struggling against BYU!
Colt, all the best! Go get’um!

  104. Warrior Dave October 25, 2013 4:50 pm

    Don,

Are you saying that there is no major booster(s) to the football program? I find that hard to believe. Wasn’t half of JJ’s contract paid by anonymous boosters? That’s what was publicized in the media.

Who is the supposedly influential Downtown Mafia? Is that for basketball only???

  105. Former UH Athlete October 25, 2013 4:50 pm

    T. Hill having a career passing day vs Boise. Boise is holding up their end by not scoring much, but BYU needs to slow down to stay under 61. I figure BSU will get a mercy TD late.

  106. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 25, 2013 4:57 pm

Oh Boise, you make me lol.

  107. Warrior Dave October 25, 2013 5:32 pm

Wow!!! BSU have lose 3 games this season under Peterson. 2nd time it’s happened according to the ESPN guys.

Congrats FUHA on guessing the under.

  108. A-joe October 25, 2013 6:16 pm

    Just a friendly reminder:

    Boise not going.

    =)

  109. NorthShoreFan October 25, 2013 6:40 pm

    Good luck Colt…make it happen.

  110. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 25, 2013 6:52 pm

    Boise not coming either. lol

    Howzit!

    SailorBlue – bp or TCC? 🙄 😆

  112. Fan October 25, 2013 7:44 pm

I still think Norm Chow will meet with success. I hope it starts this year….tomorrow actually. But if he does not by the end of next I would predict that he has the integrity to simply resign.

  113. Former UH Athlete October 25, 2013 8:38 pm

Thanks Warrior Dave…. Nice to start the week with a win after getting bageled.

Peterson has a QB problem and doesn’t have the playmakers on the perimeter to compete vs BCS level programs right now. Southwick is a game manager at best and I’m not real high on Hedrick unless he really improves in the offseason. Since Moore, Martin, Pettis and Young graduated, the Boise offense has been relegated to a dink and dunk pass game and grind-it-out run game. They are still good enough to run through MWC defenses, but Boise’s lack of playmakers has been exposed vs BYU and Washington earlier this year.

  114. Former UH Athlete October 25, 2013 8:47 pm

Too bad I was too chicken to go for BYU to cover… Had a feeling but didn’t act on it. Maybe it’s because Chris Peterson is historically very tough to bet against on national TV games.

  115. kapakahi October 25, 2013 8:49 pm

Happy Homecoming to……the former Rainbows, Rainbow Warriors, and Warriors……especially the Samoan Sack Man!!!

    jmxxxx,

I was thinking of making your Mom’s bp this weekend. Will be with you guys in spirit.

    GO RAINBOW WARRIORS!!!

  117. Former UH Athlete October 25, 2013 8:53 pm

87.. I think you’re correct. Tuileta is probably going to be awesome for the VB team. Like any freshmen in football, he’s gotta develop physically and mentally before he’ll even sniff the field. In VB, talented prep players can step in and compete at D1… Football doesn’t work that way.

  118. Warrior Dave October 25, 2013 9:23 pm

    FUHA,

Wonder if Peterson will be tempted to interview for the USC job? I agree the replacement QB is not up to the normal standards of past QBs st BSU. Is the magic gone at BSU or do they have incoming recruits to reload mode beginning next year???

  119. Bumby October 25, 2013 10:14 pm

Hope you’re having a good evening.

  120. Maddog50 October 26, 2013 4:18 am

watched the “call me Al” Noga highlights…..one thing is is athleticism…..other thing is his relentlessism!!!!! Quit playing with hesitation on D and make things happen—–good things come!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!!

  121. Former UH Athlete October 26, 2013 6:21 am

118… I can almost guarantee USC has made the call to Peterson. No idea if Peterson will leave. He’s not a lavish guy and he’s happy at Boise and he appears very comfortable with the money BSU pays him. Boise is not an expensive place to live. I always liked traveling to Boise before and after my years at UH. Great place to visit in spring and fall.

Mark Few at Gonzaga is in the same situation as Peterson. He always gets a call from big schools whenever they have openings, but he stays put.

If USC waives a $5/million carrot in front of Peterson, that’ll get the family’s attention… I gut feeling says USC goes for Del Rio.

  122. Tofuzuke October 26, 2013 7:25 am

Suggestion… have the stadium show the World Series on the Jumbo-tron Big Screen @ 2:00. It would be an awesome time watching the game and UH warm up! Go Boston!!

  123. Warrior Dave October 26, 2013 7:47 am

    FUHA,

Del Rio’s name keeps surfacing but he’s on record saying he wants an NFL job. O
Hope AD Haden is working hard behind the scenes to name a replacement. If not, recruiting for 2014 is shot.
