Schroeder, Edwards named co-captains

After consulting with some members of the team’s leadership council, head coach Norm Chow named quarterback Sean Schroeder and cornerback/returner Mike Edwards as co-captains. They joined previously selected co-captains Miah Ostrowski and Paipai Falemalu.

The announcement was made after yesterday’s practice at the Ching athletic complex.

Punter Alex Dunnachie and quarterback Cayman Shutter are now off suspension and cleared to play in games. Chow said Shutter will be competing for the top backup’s job.

As for Dunnachie, Chow joked: “It will be a game-time decision.”

Dunnachie said: “It’s great to be back.”

Take a bow, for all who helped during “Beautification Day” at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday. Of course, every day is cleanup day for Bob Coolen. But it was nice for the softball community to get involved.

Happy birthday, Mr. HiFlyer. (Now somebody grab the mic from him so we can sing “Happy Birthday.”

so should i tell my guy hawaii doesnt want him?

  3. Stephen Tsai September 24, 2012 6:44 am

I didn’t get a chance to ask the coaches about him. But I’ll relay it after today’s practice.

  4. letsgowarriors September 24, 2012 6:44 am

    thanks.

Milovale to start at LG this week?

  5. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:50 am

I guess Chow does not perceive Graves as permanent #2 QB. Hope he finds someone soon to relieve Schroeder, if necessary.

  6. Stephen Tsai September 24, 2012 6:51 am

    letsgo:

Not sure how Milovale graded out. But he got most of the reps on Saturday.

  7. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:51 am

I really admire Edwards. He is so dynamic on and off the field and especially when interviewed on TV. Congrats to him on being named co-captain.

  8. Stephen Tsai September 24, 2012 6:54 am

    Gigi:

Didn’t say Shutter will or will not be No. 2. Just that he will be competing there.

The QBs in red yesterday were Schroeder, Graves, Higgins and Shutter.

    Woolsey and Graham are redshirting.

Alo, who is now a receiver, has his left arm in a sling, so he’s not playing this year.

No decision yet on the roster. But I think UH wants to take two QBs. If Graves is not No. 2, he can go as the combo QB/WR. He also becomes the wildcat if Iosefa is not available.

  9. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:57 am

I think it was Garret who brought up a good point: If the #2 QB does not get any or enough game time reps, what will happen if Schroeder gets injured?

  10. WarriorNY September 24, 2012 7:03 am

    Pomai,

    24 – 10 WarriorNY

Congrats to Edwards… He’s now #2 in the nation in kickoff return yards(and the only guy ahead of him has played 4 games). He’s also #3 in Kickoff return average… Incredible stats!

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/player/_/stat/returning/sort/kickReturnYards

Where can we read about what Rolo did with the “H”? We shouldn’t make too much of that. To the victor go the spoils… Enjoy it Rolo… We’ll get you next year…

  30. WarriorNY September 24, 2012 7:21 am

ST… Haha too funny… You’re right about not kicking to Edwards… What a great weapon. I saw in Coach Chow’s presser that Edwards will play more on offense this week. I hope he can stay healthy. He’s the Revis and Deion Sanders of our team…

  31. Stephen Tsai September 24, 2012 7:21 am

There would be some irony if the hearing was on PPV.

  32. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 7:21 am

That’s how Frazier lost his job.

Whoa, whoa, whoa … let’s not jinx Edwards by calling him Revis.

  34. WarriorNY September 24, 2012 7:24 am

    Oops… Sorry…

  35. RedZone September 24, 2012 7:25 am

Alex kick em high and kick em far. Good luck to Cayman. I always thought that he would be the one to battle for the starting job. Looked to me like Milovale won the battle at left guard. But I will see what the coaches think.

During the game I saw something I really liked. After each offensive series the oline would gather and sit on one end of the benches. They sat like how they line up on the field. Center in the middle, 2 guards then 2 tackles. A coach with drawing board would be kneeling in front of them. They seemed to be having a lot of discussion on what just went on. I thought they started off slow but improved in the game. They need to start the game with more aggression. I thought that they were passive early on.

    Good morning Hawaii!

Land!!! Finally entered Hawaiian waters from the north pacific a few hours ago and currently a few hundred yards off Kailua-Kona!

    …back in local phone/3G range! 🙂

  37. Stephen Tsai September 24, 2012 7:27 am

Takai had the AD on the ropes and then … nothing.

I mean, he got UH to admit that the auditor was hired as the business manager and … nothing.

What undid the AD wasn’t the hearing. It was letting JJ go into the 2007 season without a contract. Then after the season, it forced the president to have to make three escalating offers to JJ.

As for today’s hearing, I think this will have less to do with how the concert was bungled and more to do with the top administration’s handling after the scam was discovered. I think they played the blame game too early, and it’s going to cost more than the lost $200,000.

  40. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 7:37 am

I think the JJ debacle was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Up to then, the hearing and the Lack of Soap in the Showers controversy cast a shadow over Frazier and it was just a matter of time before public outrage finally did the trick: getting rid of him as AD.

    Frazier was so incompetent.

  41. Pomai September 24, 2012 7:38 am

A Grease might consider never wanting a Rolo back here in any capacity.

When an ‘adult’ trashes the *H* on his former team’s football field…that’s grounds for charging him with juvenile delinquency. I thought you had more class than that, Rolo.

Seriously. I hope you are still lurking this blog. I wouldn’t hire you back to scoop dog crap off of the practice field! You and Ault make a fine pair of Aces in Reno town.

Eek. Didn’t know this part. That is sad if he must needs go through such lengths. How is his presence here being confirmed though. Would this explain 0 fawning over/welcome back Rolo front page news section?

Miah Ostrowski and Paipai Falemalu were the “people’s captains”, picked by the people; Shroeder and Edwards are Chow’s captains, picked by the emperor. Interesting.

Chow’s appointment of Edwards and Shroeder to these posts seem disrespectful to the will of the people, as expressed by the people, when the people chose Ostrowski and Falemalu as their leaders.

Nice move, Fred, uh, I mean Norm.

One sure way to keep you job is to disrespect the people. That approach always seems to work, even if only for a short time. History teaches that destroying morale in a combat unit such as a football team results in a losing season. A desperate move intended to shore up his leadership will have the opposite effect, I predict.

  67. Stretch September 24, 2012 8:46 am

  70. Stephen Tsai September 24, 2012 8:56 am

Miah and Paipai are still captains.

Now Schroeder and Edwards are captains, too.

  71. wafan September 24, 2012 8:57 am

  72. paintslinger September 24, 2012 9:09 am

I thought the attendance at the Nevada game was very thin, disappointing even. In my opinion, UH should dump the football aspect of PPV immediately. Its the one single thing that has compromised the game attendance and one of the dumbest moves the UH athletic dept has ever made. Better to put the okole’s back in the seats my friends. Go Warriors.

#9. hello. shroeder (SS) has only 2 games of D1 (FBS) game experience in like 3-4 years of college football. Our starter needs the reps more than the back-ups. Once shroeder “gets it”, then i can see a back-up getting some PT in blow-outs, but right now SS needs all the reps he can get — his decision making is slow right now. IMO

I still want to see a spread option package used for D. Graves, i think he would shake things up and rattle a defense with that type of offense, kinda like what Boise State used to do—bring-in 2-3 rarely used players who practice an offensive package to perfection. Graves has a unique set of skills, why not utilize him. Of course, IMHO

  77. Stephen Tsai September 24, 2012 9:25 am

It should be interesting to see if Iosefa can play this week.

  78. Will-I-Am September 24, 2012 9:30 am

    PPV of games.

I think the worst part of the PPV is the longterm loss of fans. Think of all the people that would just turn on the game if it was on tv for free. That opens up the audience to get more fans.

PPV makes UH an exclusive club.

If you want to be a fan you have to pay.

  79. SAWARRIOR September 24, 2012 9:33 am

i want to see Mike Edwards on offense for a few plays. Edwards looks like the only player on this team who could “stretch” the field and make the defense respect our passing game. It will not be fun seeing 8 in the box at BYU.

I thought the attendance at the Nevada game was very thin,

We could blame that blasted MMA bout on Saturday. In a normally very quiet neighborhood as a Grease’s, these MMA nonsenses help emit a bit too much noise from the most unlikeliest of homes.

PPV UH games are ruining attendance at Aloha Stadium, too (think all UH football PPV serves to do is send The campus a marginal TV money payment and stroke some Oceanic exec’s ego. Should allow PPV only to the Neighbor Islands and to those cable subscribers who physically have a difficult time getting to the stadium.)

    A Grease has spoken.

  81. postmanke September 24, 2012 9:35 am

we need Joey, but not sure this is the game he should come back. I hate that type of mindset. but the BYU D front are beastial!

  82. A-House September 24, 2012 9:39 am

    PPV for UH sports:

Initially, it was only for the “outside islands” and that evolved into including Oahu.

While it may have taken people out of seats at Aloha Stadium, it also generated additonal $$$ for UHAD and allowed a certain segment of our population who wanted, but could not go to games to watch their favoriate sport and athltetes in action.

Will there come a time where “uku million” people will go to Aloha Stadium for a game? Don’t really know, but hope it comes true. Alas, it probably will not happen in my life time.

With the new affiliation of the MWC, it appears that the PPV revenue will go to the MWC to be divy up with other conference members. This hit added to the “travel expenses” became a double whammy. Hope the MWC Conference members will reconsider and make the playing field level and treat all members financially equal. It won’t happen as long as the current commish is in place.

Unlike the Big West Conference where all “new” members, after UH, will NOT recieve any travel subsidies.

  88. HawaiiMongoose September 24, 2012 10:20 am

If UH PPV revenue will in fact be turned over to the MWC, which means 9/10ths of it will go to other MWC schools rather than be kept by UH, then live PPV for UH home football games should be eliminated on Oahu. The games can continue to be shown on a delayed basis for free the next day. Those who want to see them live should buy tickets and attend in person. The increased ticket sales revenue will more than make up for UH’s loss of 1/10th of the PPV revenue.

  89. HawaiiMongoose September 24, 2012 10:21 am

And UH can tell the MWC, “sorry, it’s nothing personal, it’s only business.”

  90. kev-1 September 24, 2012 10:29 am

Why are some people hating on Rolo? And what is this thing about the “H” that people are talking about?

  91. kev-1 September 24, 2012 10:31 am

If Iosefa is not healthy enough to play, they should at least put him in on the very first play of the BYU game. Iosefa in the wildcat throwing a deep ball to Trevor Davis. Everyone will be expecting him to run. Touchdown.

  92. J September 24, 2012 10:33 am

Only thing I recall reading about it was in Billy Hull’s piece.

“After meeting with his team in the locker room after the game, Rolovich returned to the field and laid two rolls of Rolo candies in an X-shape on the “H” of the Hawaii logo at midfield.”

  98. kev-1 September 24, 2012 10:45 am

The candy thing is funny, if that’s what happened. People need to relax. I am more concerned about the mark that his offensive play calling left on the scoreboard than the mark he left on the H logo.

If I was him, I’d be pissed too. The guy really could have learned a lot from Chow. And Chow could have really benefitted from having Rolo around.

    But, pau already.

Umm, I think Rolo’s allegience was cancelled out when Coach Chow didn’t hire him to be on his staff. Did people really expect Rolo to come here wearing his old UH uniform or something? He is a coach at another school. Where do you think his allegience should be?

  102. SAWARRIOR September 24, 2012 10:53 am

Coach Chow did Rolo a favor by letting him go. Rolo would never reach his full potential as a coach experiencing just 1 system and 1 team. Being on the mainland at another school exposes himself to other ideas, systems, offensives, people, contacts etc… Rolo will be a well rounded coach 10 years from now, unlike a few others that just stayed in Hawaii, with Hawaii.

  103. westwind September 24, 2012 10:54 am

kev-1, FYI, per the Star Advertiser writer: following the game, Rolovich came down from his booth and walked on the playing field. He then placed new rolls of Rolo candy to X-OUT the H logo for HAWAII. It wasn’t enough to just appreciate a great win by the Nevada team and coaching staff, but he needed to “dis” our house. I would have expected this from him. And they announce on the PA during the game about repect and sportsmanship between the teams. So much for class and sportsmanship.

  104. jeezy33 September 24, 2012 10:55 am

ST, I think its pretty clear that offensively, we have very minimal talent from the WR position outside of Trevod Davis at this point. He’s the only WR that has proven he has the ball skills to really make a play on a 50-50 ball down the field.

Is there any chance you see or would suggest to Chow that Mike Edwards get on the field for 10-15 snaps a ball game to create a weapon teams need to prepare for? We all know how dangerous he can be once he has the ball in his hands. I know we used Mouton in the past.

  105. jeezy33 September 24, 2012 10:57 am

    Trevor Davis *

  106. Kevin September 24, 2012 11:01 am

The symbolic gesture of what the candy incident represents, or what it supposedly represents to some, is something I believe Hawaii fans should feel somewhat passionate about.

I think we need more of that attitude of “hey, don’t even think about doing something (no matter how little it may seem) on our turf”.

It’s the “militant” attitude towards respecting our brand that is seriously lacking.

Something like that at Alabama or Michigan would give birth to epic rivalries and make way for a more passionate display of allegiance to one’s own school/program and we do need more of that.

  107. Pomai September 24, 2012 11:03 am

al and Ipu Man yes this is a Kane dancer, but I was inferring to his body shape as to what we had.

  108. Kevin September 24, 2012 11:04 am

    Pomai,

Good to know what you are looking for in the body of a man.

  109. Stretch September 24, 2012 11:05 am

#102 – good point, unless Rolo wanted to be a head coach at the high school level

  110. wait a minute September 24, 2012 11:07 am

Rolo’s wife is the one who is going to take crap from others for his actions.

  111. Kevin September 24, 2012 11:19 am

Woke up this morning and I got out of bed

Grabbed a cup of coffee to clear my head,

Read the blog and what do I see?

A story about Rolo making big body looking back at me..

    OOOOOOO WEEEE!!!

    WASSUP WIT DAT???

    WASSUP WITH DAT???

  112. G-money September 24, 2012 11:25 am

so now it’s kiffin, barkley, and rolo in the *hit bucket.

grown men acting like little, spoiled, and reckless children.

so long as they can live with the consequences, then so be it.

    who’s next?

  113. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 11:32 am

Maybe it’s not personal? Maybe he intends to X out other field logos in the MWC each time the team wins away from home? That’s gotta pump up the players. One down …. next!

  114. SAWARRIOR September 24, 2012 11:33 am

    109. exactly my point.

  115. SAWARRIOR September 24, 2012 11:34 am

if we would have won, we wouldn’t have to talk about Rolo’s Rolo candies. lol

  116. kev-1 September 24, 2012 11:35 am

SAWARRIOR . . . I don’t completely disagree, but remember, a job on Coach Chow’s staff would have exposed him to different people, ideas, systems, etc. It would have just been at the same school.

  117. kev-1 September 24, 2012 11:36 am

Maybe Rolo was just putting an “X marks the spot” on the H saying that one day he would be back?

  118. kev-1 September 24, 2012 11:36 am

Did anybody get to eat those candies? It would be a shame if they went to waste.

  119. kifi September 24, 2012 11:37 am

Rolo is hilarious. Cracks me up. I wish him much luck the rest of the year. From what I hear, he’s a great guy.

  120. Chicken Grease September 24, 2012 11:52 am

A Grease recalls how jovial a Rolo would be in, say, interviews (I think one question was asked of him, “are there some plays you favor” something or other. His response? “I like Jersey Boys a lot.”)

Well. If he IS trashing UH, “H” logo, etc., we’re looking at buggah going Sith if you ask a Grease.

At the worst? This is the REAL Rolo. I mean, he has to thank UH Warriors football team for allowing to enhance his coaching abilities in order to get Palpati . . . er, a Grease means Ault to recognize a Rolo enough to snatch him on board.

OK. Unleash your fav’ chocolate and creamy caramel jokes on Rolo. Oh, wait — why should we insult the candy, yes? Never mind.

  121. Chicken Grease September 24, 2012 11:57 am

Heh, # 115 — didn’t get to read your post as a Grease was posting his own.

Guess we’re now, in fact, in the contemplation of chocolate-covered caramel counters on a Rolo.

He gonna need UH Warriors before we gonna need him.

  122. SAWARRIOR September 24, 2012 11:59 am

116, It’s to Rolo’s benefit to go away to a different school and be employed by that school to see how their AD system/university works—from top down, the more schools/experiences the better, IMO.

The military wants its future commanders to be well rounded, and so they are put in different positions, different situations, different commands, states, countries etc… same idea with a coach, it’s the whole “grooming” process. Well, that’s if he wants to be a HC at the D1 level, and Rolo’s a leader, so i believe he wants to and will be a HC one day.

  123. Chicken Grease September 24, 2012 12:06 pm

Amen, # 103. Rolo could’ve enjoyed the win. He had to rub it in, instead? Deliberately (he couldn’t get more deliberate than using Rolo candies). Yeah, yeah, getting experience with a new team (something tells a Grease that a Rolo wanted to stay in a Coach Chow era), but, so what?

Shakespeare wrote about arrogance like this.

  124. Gsky September 24, 2012 12:07 pm

Rolo has/had a lot of fans in Hawaii. We have a connection with him because of the great memories he helped bring to us. He had an opportunity to do something very classy after the Warriors, AND ITS FANS, got bashed on Saturday. Lets face it. When our team gets beat, we feel like we personally got beat. We feel bad too.

Yes its great to speak highly of the team he is now coaching and be happy about the win, but I really thought he might say something to the fans of Hawaii…to tell us to keep our hopes up…or to give it time because this is the first year…but nothing..nothing. I kinda felt like he cut ties with the us fans. Putting an X on our logo kinda seals it… No class

  125. Bryson September 24, 2012 12:07 pm

What time is the game on Friday? Is it being shown on ESPN?

  126. HawaiiMongoose September 24, 2012 12:17 pm

I think some folks are overreacting to the Rolo thing. Leaving the candy on the field sends a little “gotcha” message to the current UH coaching staff. I doubt it was intended to be a disrespectful or mean-spirited gesture toward the UH program as a whole, given the important part Rolo has played in Hawaii football history and what it’s meant to his career. This is the kind of stuff that college football rivalries are built on. It increases the interest and emotion around the game and makes for fun story-telling. Now the UH coaches will have to figure out how to reciprocate if the Warriors beat Nevada in Reno next year. Maybe they can leave a nice plumeria lei on the wolf logo… trading candy for flowers.

  127. A-House September 24, 2012 12:22 pm

    Bryson:

  128. warriorforlife September 24, 2012 12:23 pm

I agree with HawaiiMongoose. You are all over-reacting and acting like sullen children.

  129. A-House September 24, 2012 12:24 pm

remember when TO of the 49ers stomped on the Dallas logo at mid-field several years back?

it nearly creted a riot amongs the Dallas players and led to a nasty game!

  130. A-House September 24, 2012 12:25 pm

I suppose Rolo’s candy gesture can be taken many ways, but for me its a slap in the face to UH and us fans!!!!!!

  131. SAWARRIOR September 24, 2012 12:26 pm

    125. yes its on ESPN, 7pm ct. i think 2pm hawaii time.

  132. SAWARRIOR September 24, 2012 12:29 pm

Rolo brought great memories for me during his playing days, so i have to give Rolo the benefit of the doubt and say it was all in fun, no dis’ intended.

  133. THE MAN September 24, 2012 12:29 pm

Someone should have laid Rolo out flat on the field for dissing our house. Punk a**!

  134. Will-I-Am September 24, 2012 12:32 pm

I love what Rolo did. This is sports. We need to be competitive. Next time we win @ Nevada we better have a comeback prank!

These are the kinds of things that reate great rivalries and that is what UH needs.

Nice one Rolo. Let the games begin!

  135. A-House September 24, 2012 12:32 pm

OK, checked out channel 52 and it has some relifious program – says OAHU; not OLELO.

  136. wowlaulau September 24, 2012 12:33 pm

I think Rolo should have just let what happened on the field

do the talking for him, what he did seems immature to me. Not sure

I would want a coach or head coach teaching my son those values..

  137. RedZone September 24, 2012 12:34 pm

If these kinds of harmless little tokens (pranks) help build up a healthy rivalry, then so be it. We need these kinds of things to bring the fans out in force, yelling and screaming…

  144. d1shima September 24, 2012 12:50 pm

    I’m posting again earlier than my self-imposed 48-hour rule…

    Happy Birthday HiFlyer!

  145. Whats up September 24, 2012 12:51 pm

Who cares about Rolo actions, he is the OC for Nevada. This is about the Hawaii Warriors baby! Rolo is the past! Unless he gets a job back here respresenting the Warriors some day in the future who cares about Rolo, seriously. It’s going to take time but the Warriors will get better and payback is a … 1 game doesn’t mean the Warriors are finished folks!

Although, I don’t think Hawaii will win very many games this year now that we got to see how young the athletes/players are so far. There is always a chance that adjustments can be made, the light bulb can turn on bright and the Warriors can win enough games to go bowling. You never know? But lets keep our expectations tempered like Chow said in the beginning of the season.

Think about it Brian Kelly has been the Head Coach for Notre Dame 3 years now and ND is looking good, those first 2 years ND was pretty horrible. It’s just a example, not everytime this happens but Keapana is right it’s going to take at least 3 to 4 years for us to see some really, really good Warrior Football.

  146. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 12:52 pm

Rolo acting like a douche after beating us?…Guess he had to get his jollies somehow after they got their asses handed to them by a Div 1AA school. TRUTH.

UH is your alma mater and the reason why you even have the job at Nevada. TRUTH.

Hope Boise and Fresno kicks the crap out of Nevada. TRUTH.

    Happy Birthday, HiFlyer!

  149. Pauoa Boy September 24, 2012 1:05 pm

Before our team can talk smack to anyone we need to win games and stop embarrassing ourselves on nationally televised games. We keep showing our asses to the world by getting stomped on, who is going to respect us? Plus if I’m a recruit looking at my options, after watching UH get romped by USC and pretty much bitch slapped by Nevada, I would consider looking elsewhere. It’s why we will never sign guys like Manti Te’o and Marcus Mariota or any top prospect in the state. Our track record proves that. Sucks but its the truth cause if it ain’t somebody please enlighten me.

  150. d1shima September 24, 2012 1:08 pm

    Niceties aside now…

Last season the Tsai Tidbits about Rolo naming trick plays and other things that he does to bring some fun into the J-O-B of coaching in order to keep the F-U-N perspective was well-received here.

Saturday night his new J-O-B required him to coach a team against his Alma Mater. If not for a throwaway line from a reporter who was still in the stadium then virtually no one reading this blog would have even known what he did much less witnessed it! It’s not as if he did TO-move and ran to the center of the field in front of a full house or ran onto the field and pulled a Schwartz-slap like Harbaugh did. This was Rolo having F-U-N. If there were 40k Hawaii fans in the house at the end of the game I seriously doubt that Rolo would have done anything like that.

Disrespecting his Alma Mater and former team, you say?

How about “fans” streaming for the exits in the 3rd quarter after Reno scores their first TD of the half? There were barely a few thousand left in the stands by the time the final gun sounded.

If you were in the stands and singing Co-ed along with the team then, like me, I doubt that you would have even noticed Rolo.

Some have posted here this game was embarassing and hopeless. I never see anything that made me feel that way about the team but kinda wondering about the fans…

    Pau.

Going back to the rest of the 48 hours now…

  151. greenthumb September 24, 2012 1:10 pm

Goodness. After several minutes of pointed questions from Kim then Slom then Kim (kind of like a volleyball tandem), the UH attorney is acknowldeging that the billing hours may make the amound billed to UH “more than” $50,000.

  152. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 1:14 pm

    d1 #150,

sry bruddah, i respect your opinions, but that was embarrassing, 69-24, but i’m still a Warrior fan.

If the fans and players are not embarrassed by that score, then why would we donate monies and why would the players practice harder to get better, why care?

ok, i gotta go to the sports bar for MNF, and i will wear my H hat too.

maybe his re-emergence may allow mike edwards to find some pt on offense. could happen because the coaches will be looking for playmakers especially this morning after having viewed the videos yesterday.

  157. al September 24, 2012 1:40 pm

that rolo thing seems out of character for him.

has anyone actually witnessed the alleged deed? or did record it?

  158. Pauoa Boy September 24, 2012 1:45 pm

If as fans we gonna sugar coat the team and condone mediocrity and make excuses then we will always be were we are at. I for one am a die hard fan and I want the team to do well and yes I do feel that getting records set against our team in our house is an embarrassment. If it ain’t then I guess games like that are okay and to be expected. The defense especially got ran over and made it look like Coach Rolo was playing PS3 with Fajardo and Jefferson all night long knowing the defense did absolutely nothing to stop them. They never adjusted what they were doing from start of the game to final whistle so how the frikk could the defense not figure it out for the entire game. Embarrassing!!!

As for Rolo… he did his job well. Proud of the Warrior alum… would have hoped for no less an effort.

    GO WARRIORS!

  165. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 1:53 pm

  166. greenthumb September 24, 2012 1:54 pm

ZQa0F2 Major thanks for the article.Much thanks again. Keep writing.

  168. Not an Expert September 24, 2012 1:59 pm

With the run and shoot you could get away with less athletic receivers. With the pro style offense you need to have that extra. Remember JJ stating that the type of players UH attracts, the RnS will give them a greater chance of winning. Coach Chow needs a few more years to recruit the calibar of athletes he needs to run a pro style.

Many former professional league defensive coaches who have been away from the college game has difficulty in defending so called “system offenses”. They need time and game experience to learn how to adjust.

If Chow and his coaches can continue to upgrade the level of the recruits I believe he will be successful. Only time will tell.

  169. WarriorNY September 24, 2012 2:04 pm

    How are they involved?

    #173,

    No it does not.

It is open to interpretation. Fundraising Campaigns are said to require Board of Regent and Presidents approval.

If all fundraisers were to require BOR/Presidents approval, it would be in hundreds and up to thousands.

That includes fundraisers that the band holds and even the bake sales that the Law School or even my graduate program does.

174 – It would be interesting to see that actual rule language.

  181. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 2:20 pm

    Not an expert…

I don’t think the Pro style, pro set affects the defensive end of the ball… and that is what is worrisome.

If Greenwood and her staff need more time to deal with a mere $200K incident… no wonder UH is in such a financial mess. How much time does she need to manage nearly 1 billion in revenues?

  182. greenthumb September 24, 2012 2:20 pm

  184. wafan September 24, 2012 2:23 pm

She keeps redirecting her responses, not responding directly to the question.

  185. wafan September 24, 2012 2:25 pm

Looks like she was willing to sacrifice the athletic department (RS and JD) while her counsel knew about the concert.

Maybe her counsel does not give her reports even though the fundraiser should have had her approval? Or was the approval of counsel sufficient?

Somebody higher up than JD and RS screwed up.

As a coach — assistant or otherwise — bottom line, he should be going by “team loses as a team”-, “team wins as a team”-ness. His li’l stiunt went “me Rolo. Me beat UH Warriors who gave me job for a while. Me Rolo beat UH, not Wolfpack beat UH.”

I’m opening to hearing the guy ‘splain.

Something tells me that if we still had that silly rainbow logo and Rolo put rolos on that rainbow logo? You’d be arguing differently.

  188. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 2:29 pm

    #180 greenthumb,

Here is the exact language taken from the “Board of Regents Policy on Business and Finance Section 8-9: Fundraising”

    ——

Fund raising campaigns conducted for the benefit of, and in the name of, the University of Hawai‘i, or any of its affiliate branches, for whatever purpose, must be given prior approval in writing by the President. When Board policy appears to be involved, or should the campaign require University funds or have a goal in excess of $50 million, the matter will be taken to the Board of Regents for approval. (am: June 20, 1997; am: Oct. 18, 2002)

  189. wafan September 24, 2012 2:31 pm

    greenthumb . . .

    Just using the factfinder report.

  190. greenthumb September 24, 2012 2:32 pm

188 — thank you for the exact language; some conflation going on there.

  191. wafan September 24, 2012 2:33 pm

Gave up listening to her babble.

I have better things to do . . . like grade papers.

  192. HawaiiMongoose September 24, 2012 2:36 pm

    Pomai, see post #92.

  193. HawaiiMongoose September 24, 2012 2:37 pm

Pomai, disregard, I read your post #175 wrong.

  194. greenthumb September 24, 2012 2:37 pm

What do you folks think, is transparency when you give out information, or when you react to a request for information?

  195. HawaiiMongoose September 24, 2012 2:39 pm

Re #188, a “fund raising campaign” is not the same as a single-event fundraiser.

  196. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 2:39 pm

Why make this Rolo thing a big issue. If he really wanted to be here in Hawaii and was let go, then I’d be bummed too… and putting two sticks of candy on the stadium floor isn’t such a big deal especially if he wasn’t pow wowing around it with a bunch of his players. If he waited till almost everyone left, then maybe it was meant to be a very private moment that wasn’t intended for public eyes? Then we are the intruders. Nevertheless. It’s no big thing. He didn’t imply that a screwdriver landed on the ground next to him, did he?

  197. Matt September 24, 2012 2:40 pm

It is “certainly possible” that UH hired a PR firm to approach businesses to have them submit written testimony to delay or cancel the hearings.

  198. obachan September 24, 2012 2:41 pm

Greenwood resigned as provost from the U of California system when conflict of interest accusations regarding her involvement in hiring her alleged girl friend and son were raised – only to be subsequently hired by UH. Given her questionable history of ethical lapse(s), who are the ding-a-lings at UH who hired her? Chickens coming home to roost. Cock-fight coming soon to a neighborhood near you.

  199. laulau head September 24, 2012 2:42 pm

    #165…Mahaloz

  200. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 2:44 pm

Pomai, I agree with you that would be a very good mascot (minus the fluffy dress).

And if no student available for that role, how about having a sponsor pay UH big

    money to sponsor the mascot…

  201. Matt September 24, 2012 2:45 pm

It would be really great if BRS could play this week, or at least by the second game on the trip at SDSU. We could use his experience.

  202. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 2:46 pm

As for Rolo, cute. Trick or treat. People who now “hate” him,

probably are the trolls who hate anything and everything.

  203. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 2:48 pm

Next year, Chow could leave one of those “Hawaii” can of Spam on the Wolfpack field…

  204. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 2:50 pm

    #195,

Yes. That was my point. Lol

  205. postmanke September 24, 2012 2:58 pm

    what an effing b*itch!

  206. postmanke September 24, 2012 3:00 pm

had a feeling JD was in trouble with the AD position before the start of season last year.

  207. greenthumb September 24, 2012 3:04 pm

Is Apple in the room? Wonder what he is thinking about this segment of the testimony?

  208. Bryson September 24, 2012 3:06 pm

Don’t forget We also lost a great Hawaii Athletics Supporter in Chancellor Hinshaw…Which I’m guessing was a M.R.C. Greenwood call…

  209. Will-I-Am September 24, 2012 3:11 pm

DID M.R.C. just claim to be responsible to get us out of the WAC? Is that true?

  210. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 3:13 pm

    Probably.

  211. Will-I-Am September 24, 2012 3:15 pm

    Ipu Man, #203,

That is genius! I love it.

  212. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:16 pm

    #209,

She said BOR charged her with taking over the issue of conference affiliation. There was sentiment that if there wasn’t higher powers to take over, we would still be in the sinking ship called the WAC.

At least that’s what I understood it to be.

  213. Shoko September 24, 2012 3:20 pm

Thats what I understood as well.

  214. Self Storage Miami September 24, 2012 3:21 pm

hey there and thank you in your info ? I have definitely picked up something new from right here. I did on the other hand experience a few technical points using this web site, as I experienced to reload the web site many instances prior to I could get it to load correctly. I were considering in case your hosting is OK? Not that I’m complaining, however slow loading cases instances will very frequently impact your placement in google and could injury your high quality rating if advertising and marketing with Adwords. Anyway I’m adding this RSS to my e-mail and can look out for a lot more of your respective intriguing content. Make sure you update this once more soon..

  215. Shoko September 24, 2012 3:23 pm

Is there a time limit to this inquiry?

  216. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:23 pm

whooooaaaaaa…..Greenwood is opening up pandoras box.

She just implicated both the Speaker of the House and Senate President in leveraging UH for a landing spot for Donovan.

  217. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:24 pm

    #215,

By internal rules of the Senate. No. lol.

  218. greenthumb September 24, 2012 3:25 pm

216 she says they tried to buy out the contract?

  219. Shoko September 24, 2012 3:26 pm

Okay, since its archived I’ll just catch the rest tomorrow or later this week.

    Have fun, folks!

  220. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:28 pm

    #218,

No she said that both the SOH and SP went to the Governor’s office “deeply concerned about JD and the situation…”

DMK wanted to clarify what she meant by that.

  221. jm2375 September 24, 2012 3:30 pm

    Happy Birthday HiFlyer!

Hawaii is a large small town. Therefore, don’t ever burn bridges intentionally. You never know when it’ll come back to bite you in the okole.

  222. postmanke September 24, 2012 3:31 pm

Just going off a whim.. You’re Fricken Fired! wishy washy.. unreal, this is an embarrassment!

  223. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 3:31 pm

Nice to hear the truth. Hope they don’t STOP her from spilling the beans…

  224. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 3:37 pm

It seems JD did not want to make it hard on Coach Mac by cutting his parachute.

So that’s one reason why Greenwood felt he had to go, too…

I wonder if Coach Chow asked her for a new AD?

  225. postmanke September 24, 2012 3:38 pm

Thats it, I heard enough,, “Football is a problem”

  226. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 3:38 pm

I don’t think she overstepped. She just did her job…but not very well.

  227. greenthumb September 24, 2012 3:41 pm

220, the two are not mutually exclusive. Her money comment was made at about the time she was mentioning the revised (briefer) contract extension whe wasn’t interested in.

  228. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:44 pm

She didn’t say “football is a problem”

She said that football presents a very special set of challenges. When hiring the Dean of Natural Sciences who #1 more funding and #2 is more important than an athletics program in the scope of what the University is, they don’t have the kind of public interest as the hiring of a football coach.

  229. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:44 pm

    #227,

    What are you referring to?

  230. Kekoa September 24, 2012 3:47 pm

Anyone notice that W/Doc is sitting up front and personal at the hearing?

    Go get um doc!

To Rolo or not. Your choice.

    Ainokea…I do what I like, right D-1?

  231. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:48 pm

Greenwood could help her case about her involvement by stating the fact that the Board of Directors of the MWC and WAC conferences are made up of Presidents of schools and not the AD or Chancellors.

  232. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 3:50 pm

shi-shi break time for the ladies…

  233. postmanke September 24, 2012 3:50 pm

228 – I heard scandal, less football.. in about all in about 15 seconds. =)

  234. greenthumb September 24, 2012 3:53 pm

239 — You had responded to my reaction to her buyout comment (maybe it was a trial balloon?) with a recap of Greenwood’s comment about legislative leadership’s actions. I was just saying the two things we noticed weren’t mutually exclusive.

  235. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:53 pm

The concern is whether or not the President is over stepping her authority in getting involved with UHAD. Notably the MWC affiliation, firing of McMackin, hiring of Chow.

  236. postmanke September 24, 2012 3:53 pm

Congrats Schroeder and Edwards! Well deserved. amazing that a player can show up as a transfer and in a few short months be selected a captain. Good work!

  237. Annoddah Dave September 24, 2012 3:54 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

I remember you mentioned about the PR staff of the UH being a bunch of news readers…is that not the head of the PR staff sitting behind the President, Lynn Waters?

  238. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 3:55 pm

So “they” are trying to distract the public from finding out who was really

responsible for the Wonder Blunder by asking all these other questions…

    it seems.

  239. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 3:55 pm

    #234,

Sorry, I thought you meant that Say and Tsutsui were trying to buy out JD’s contract. lol.

  240. Shoko September 24, 2012 3:55 pm

    231. Good point. They are responsible for decisions regarding conference issues, to include new members.

    Okay, good night.

  241. greenthumb September 24, 2012 4:00 pm

#239, that would have been interesting, huh? Another thought about what was said about that time in the hearing, can a legislative hearing put someone under oath? (Think that is what she said.)

  242. PowderPuff September 24, 2012 4:00 pm

Yes, that is indeed Lynne Waters, Annodah Dave.

  243. Annoddah Dave September 24, 2012 4:02 pm

    @PP, Thanks.

  244. John Fitzgerald Byers September 24, 2012 4:02 pm

ladies and gentlemen this is the kind of thing all coaches at the uh must deal with. It trickles down from Bachman hall to the quarry bosses all reflecting on each other.

  245. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:03 pm

Apple, two weeks on the job, said he did not want to re-hire Jim Donovan.

  246. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:04 pm

    #241,

In Investigative Committee hearings, the Senate president / Speaker can issue “investigative powers,” which include subpoena powers to the committee. The last time I remember this was during the hydrogen tax credit debacle under Ted Liu. Donna Kim was also the Chair of that committee.

It can be done also by house/senate/con-current resolution.

That being said, this particular committee is only handling an informational briefing and not an investigation hearing.

  247. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:08 pm

    Jim Donovan up to bat.

  248. Matt September 24, 2012 4:08 pm

    JD coming up.

  249. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:09 pm

No one backing up JD…Lynn Waters and computer-man left…

  250. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:11 pm

Oh, did Lynn Waters come back to sit behind him?

    Nice to see that…

  251. greenthumb September 24, 2012 4:12 pm

It sounds like there are at least 2 more hearings planned. Wonder if the scope of this committee will morph to investigative (246).

  252. BowNatic September 24, 2012 4:12 pm

I would like to apologize to all of you and the Warriors for going off on them, on this blog, after their loss to Nevada. I acted stupidly and I am embarrassed by my comments. I love my boys and wish them the best for the rest of the season, and I am sorry to all of you for having to listen to my rants.

    Aloha!

  253. Shoko September 24, 2012 4:15 pm

Who is that women sitting behind JD that seams to be laughing?

  254. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:17 pm

JD talked to Greenwood, Amemiya, Martinson about his frustration about not being able to pick the selection committee to find the next football coach.

Was told to “stop pursuing” beyond the 6 committee members.

  255. greenthumb September 24, 2012 4:17 pm

Seems like there are more legislators there now.

  256. postmanke September 24, 2012 4:19 pm

kinda like being on top chef.. Chef JD, here is Chopped Liver, Durian Fruit and Bagoong – Here you go JD cook us up A money making dish! You don’t get to choose the ingredients but if your dish fails its your fault. OMG!

  257. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:20 pm

He told Amemiya that he would submit letter of resignation if he couldn’t pick those on selection committee.

He eventually was able to pick 2…Miyawaki and Rolles. Total of 6.

  258. oldie September 24, 2012 4:20 pm

I wonder how the UH coaches feel about Rolo’s gesture. They just got their heads handed to them by Nevada, and a coach, not a player, does what Rolo did. Is there a message that he’s sending to our coaching staff?

  259. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:21 pm

    #255,

Any legislator may sit in on any committee as a non-voting member. They aren’t afforded the privilege to ask questions etc., but often are given some consideration by the Chair depending on the situation.

  260. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:23 pm

He was told by Craig Thompson that “because of Hawaii’s football program they would be in the mix when conference alignment changed…”

Good thing we didn’t just say OK and left it at that. If it ain’t in writing, and even if it is, it ain’t worth crap.

In this respect, I think Greenwood/BOR did a good job in taking the initiative.

  261. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:24 pm

Chair Martinson issued a directive to Greenwood saying that the negotiations with the MWC were to kept secret from JD and Hinshaw.

  262. wafan September 24, 2012 4:25 pm

Looks like things might hit the fan big time.

  263. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:25 pm

The Rock wuz acting AD before JD let go…

  264. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:25 pm

    ***EDIT #261***

NOT Martinson…It was CHAIR KARR at the time.

  265. Shoko September 24, 2012 4:25 pm

Wow, the Rock kept JD in the dark.

  266. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:26 pm

    #265,

Yes through a directive by the Chair of the BOR.

  267. greenthumb September 24, 2012 4:26 pm

259, exactly. Glad to see the extras in attendance.

  268. Shoko September 24, 2012 4:27 pm

Thats shady. JD should have been notified about talks of getting UH into the MWC.

  269. cocobean September 24, 2012 4:29 pm

Give Ault credit. He used one of paul Johnson’s tenets – you don’t have to block everyone to run an option O. They ran a very right handed O and many times didn’t block their left edge to double team the DTs or fire out to clear out our 2nd level.

It seemed UH couldn’t adjust to their blocking schemes as much as reading the option Farjardo chose. It didn’t help that their running back was faster than everyone on D(maybe except Edwards) and could run through arm tackles.

Got to remember Ault knows the D will be playing assignment football. He did his best to mess up the reads by going no huddle.

The impression I get is our O is a “package offense.” It’s not a pro set, spread or option. It’s packages designed to take maximize the available talent (except for Graves).

  270. jm2375 September 24, 2012 4:29 pm

Anyone watching MNF? Refs called a penalty on #25 for Green Bay. Announcers said GB doesn’t have #25. Isn’t that Alex Green’s number? Is he not active for this game?

  271. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:30 pm

    #267,

You will notice that those attending but not on the committee are heavy hitters too.

Michelle Kidani – Vice Chair Ways and Means (She is also responsible for ALL CIP programs and funding)

    David Ige, Chair of WAM

Will Espero – Chair of Public Safety, Govt Operation, Military Affairs. Member of WAM.

  272. jm2375 September 24, 2012 4:31 pm

    😳 never mind. AG’s # is 20.

  273. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:33 pm

Till this day, JD has never met Bob Peyton the local promoter.

  274. greenthumb September 24, 2012 4:33 pm

271, yep. Connect that with Sen. Kim’s comment about ethics issues and (at least) 2 more meetings and a couple of other dots/shoes.

  275. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:34 pm

the “Neal” Blaisdale Center people recommended Peyton…

  276. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:37 pm

The concert was supposed to make $250,000-$350,000 per night. Two nights could have led up to $700,000 in additional revenue. They were in the hole for about $1.5M and was hoping to make a dent into that.

  277. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:38 pm

Jim Donovan stated it is NOT his understanding that the President must sign off on any fundraising event.

They do several during the year without such authorization.

  278. WWF September 24, 2012 4:42 pm

Regarding Rolo leaving candy on the field, if he did do it, he left CANDY on the field. If he had three rolls of candy, he could have made an “H”, but he probably only had two rolls, after eating the third roll.

Leaving candy or flowers is usually a gift in most parts of the world.

Congratulations, Rolo for a great job at picking apart our “D”!

  279. Da Punchbowl Kid September 24, 2012 4:42 pm

    Happy Birthday HiFlyer! 🙂

  280. John Fitzgerald Byers September 24, 2012 4:42 pm

    NEWSFLASH:

Not all people employed by UH are subject to their own policies, even if the intent is for a good cause.

  281. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:43 pm

    #278,

So you saying he offered us a gift and ate part of it? Most parts of the world would consider that to be rude. Lol.

  282. John Fitzgerald Byers September 24, 2012 4:44 pm

Guarantee you all no one that works at UH AD is surprised by any of this. years and decades of inconsistent policy changes and misgivings and misdirection as to who is incharge. All part of the games. god bless all UH coaches for having to work in spite of this.

  283. Da Punchbowl Kid September 24, 2012 4:45 pm

Congratz to the new captains – they , Paipai and Miah are good leaders.

Now lets get another W this week!

    Pomai –

If its not taken, 24 – 21 UH by a nose.

  284. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:46 pm

JD said he trusted UH legal counsel on this…

  285. postmanke September 24, 2012 4:47 pm

    282 – Indeed!

  286. AlaWai September 24, 2012 4:47 pm

    I messaged Rolo:

“Aloha Nick: Good win over us (UH).

Peeps want to know what the deal was with the candiies after the game and the H logo. I interpreted as your way of Xng the Nevada jinks and your moving on. Either way it must have been a very emotional night for you. All the best.”

    Rolo replied:

“You are the second inquiry about the candy placement, here is a copy of what I wrote a few minutes ago. I hope it explains enough of my intent. Disrespect wasn’t one of them, and it wasn’t for all island eyes. This woman asked about the significance of my actions, to show respect for my time spent at UH or to show that I returned and conquered.

Appreciate the emaill, apparently this has gotten bigger than I had planned. Newspaper worthy it was not meant to be. If I know the fans of Hawaii, I may need to find a new vacation spot, though I would rather not. The initial idea was aimed to be an inside joke with a few close friends on the island who work close with UH football and Aloha Stadium, but now I feel with you emailing me it has been perceived as an act of disrespect by some. Which I can see and understand, and for that I regret doing it. Hopefully those who know me well understand that it was meant to be humorous, but I can see also how many other Warrior fans may be upset.

The significance question you ask is a good one, and it made me think a while. It was too spontaneous of an idea to have much premeditated significance other than being a joke/dare/challenge, but after thinking a while on it, it contained some of both your options. The intended humor would not have been understood any other place than Aloha Stadium because of my time spent there as a player and a coach. On the other hand, it did have some aspect of coming back to the islands and winning a game at Aloha Stadium. I wouldn’t use “conquer” as a proper description.

Since beginning this email, I received another inquiry about my act of “disrespect”. If I offended you or anyone you know I apologize, it was not my intent. But I do know this, if UH comes up to Nevada next year and wins, I completely expect to receive a meaningful “gift” from Warrior fans attending the game. Who knows, this may become a tradition of sorts. Since this took on a life of its own, we might as well run with it (but let’s keep it harmless and creative, nobody needs a black eye from caramel). This is too hard of a game not to have a little fun with it.

I wish the Warriors the best the rest of the way, especially next Friday. Those players are still special to me and I want them to have success, they have worked too hard and are good people. Thanks for the email, and the heads up about the severity of my actions.”

    Nick Rolovich

  287. Kevin September 24, 2012 4:48 pm

time for a champion… soothe the soul of the land, mend the heart from the sea and sand, till the sun comes up again..

  288. Buffoman September 24, 2012 4:49 pm

#252 BowNatic. I did not think an apology was necessary. Most, if not all of the folks who participate are Warrior, ‘Bows, …whatever fans. Everyone spouts opinions and some more forcefully than others. I actually enjoy reading the bombastic comments just to see the reaction.

  289. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:49 pm

JD did not inform executives in the “Executive Team” meetings he is a part of that there was a Stevie Wonder concert going on.

That right there is a big issue.

JD said there was “no box to check off” to inform the Chancellor about something like this concert.

  290. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:51 pm

JD isn’t denying that Admin was not directly informed about this event.

  291. postmanke September 24, 2012 4:51 pm

    Rolo – you’re brilliant!

  292. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 4:52 pm

JD was never made aware that a wire transfer was going to be done.

  293. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:53 pm

    Thanks Ala Wai

    and thanks Rolo.

Did I just thank a canal?

  294. greenthumb September 24, 2012 4:54 pm

The math is still not working out for me. X amount for the rent (guaranteed) plus 75 percent of the overage after the talent and the promoter are paid. That plus the prepayment needing to be paid back.

  295. wafan September 24, 2012 4:54 pm

    Canal?

  296. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 4:54 pm

    Legal counsel is guilty…

  297. wafan September 24, 2012 4:54 pm

    Oh, caramel.

  298. wafan September 24, 2012 4:56 pm

    Who approved the wired money?

  299. wafan September 24, 2012 4:57 pm

Should that person be the one on the hot seat?

  300. postmanke September 24, 2012 5:02 pm

Rolo – you gotta parlay this into a Hershey contract.

  301. Shoko September 24, 2012 5:03 pm

Is that WassuoDoc to the left of JD? Someone mentioned they saw her.

  302. postmanke September 24, 2012 5:04 pm

those fake iPhone call apps do come in handy!

  303. Shoko September 24, 2012 5:06 pm

Like the rivalry between UNR and UNLV for the Fremont Cannon, so too should there be a rivalry between UH and UNR for the Rolo candy?

Nevermind. Rolo probably won’t be there that long.

  304. HawaiiMongoose September 24, 2012 5:12 pm

As I thought, Rolo had no intent to be disrespectful, he was just having a bit of spontaneous fun in the spirit of competition. It was an eventful night for him and he left the candy on the spur of the moment as a good-natured gibe. I’m glad UH is in the same conference with Nevada (the first Mainland university to ever to send a football team to play at UH, in 1920) and I hope Rolo’s small joke contributes in a positive way to the budding rivalry between the schools.

  305. Slugger September 24, 2012 5:13 pm

    Happy birthday, HiFlyer!

  306. Shoko September 24, 2012 5:15 pm

That new position JD accepted, isn’t that for a set amount of time (3 years)? If a set time, JD could be out of a job if not retained and be in the same position where he would have ended up if just allowed to finish the rest of this contract as AD.

  307. Chicken Grease September 24, 2012 5:15 pm

    MEIN GOTT!!!!! GREEN BAY, SEAHWAWKS GAME!!!!! * * * 21ST CENTURY “HAIL MARY”-CLASS PLAY!!!! * * *

  308. d1shima September 24, 2012 5:16 pm

    OMG! 😯

  309. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 5:20 pm

Next year, we need to defeat them at their house and bring along a bowl of instant Chow-mein… and put the chopsticks standing up in them… sort of like how they offer rice to the departed…

  310. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 5:21 pm

    shoko,

I believe that JD will be entitled to full retirement benefits after three years.

  311. postmanke September 24, 2012 5:24 pm

    lol Chow mein.. the possibilities..

  312. Shoko September 24, 2012 5:26 pm

Ah, thanks. I remember hearing something like that.

Maybe, put one mix plate on Mackay field? Get one L&L in Reno.

  313. touchthestick? September 24, 2012 5:27 pm

    #286 Ala Wai

Thanks for posting Rolovich’s reply to your classy question.

The reply was thoughtful yet contained a brimful of emotion; I think Rolovich “‘splained” it good.

The only question remaining is, what kind candy to plant on Nevada’s logo?

I go for three rolls of vix.

  314. software de facturacion September 24, 2012 5:28 pm

Hi there very cool site!! Guy .. Excellent .. Superb .. I’ll bookmark your site and take the feeds also?I’m happy to find a lot of useful information right here in the post, we want work out more strategies on this regard, thank you for sharing. . . . . .

  315. WWF September 24, 2012 5:30 pm

#281 No, he left two rolls, not 1 and one partially eaten one. That would be rude. After the seventh Touchdown,

I would want to celebrate with some candy too. . .

  316. mo808 September 24, 2012 5:30 pm

    Packers were robbed! IMHO!

  317. Slugger September 24, 2012 5:32 pm

Knowing Rolo a lil bit, I agree that he was probly joking around. Someone here prolly gave him the Rolo candies.

JD is eligible to retire in 3 yrs. so keeping him on in the Chancellor’s office is a reasonable solution to the embarrassing event. He can do lots of good with his contacts & communication in the community. Hope they actually use his skills.

  318. Matt September 24, 2012 5:35 pm

Warriors should leave a bag of Puppy Chow on the field after winning in Reno next year.

  319. SteveM [iPhone4] September 24, 2012 5:37 pm

    Departing Kona.

    Next stop: Nawiliwili.

  320. Shoko September 24, 2012 5:39 pm

Guess JD was appreciative to speak publicly about this whole fiasco and give his side of the story, somewhat.

  321. Chicken Grease September 24, 2012 5:40 pm

GOOD having these hearings. Getting play at top of all newscasts.

Everyone there, though, missing Ca$h Can and reruns of The Big Bang Theory.

change of pace – basketball – anyone interested ?

UH Men’s basketball team gets first 2013 commitment

    By Brian McInnis

    POSTED: 12:30 p.m. HST, Sep 24, 2012

    Share

The Hawaii men’s basketball team received its first oral commitment for the 2013-14 season today in Michael Thomas of El Camino Real (Calif.) High School.

Thomas, a 6-foot-5 wing player, can officially sign with the Rainbow Warriors on Nov. 14.

Thomas took an official visit to the islands last weekend. He chose UH over UC Santa Barbara, Northern Arizona and Boise State. He’d previously visited the others.

The athletic Thomas was a post player at El Camino as a junior, but plans to transition more to the wing as a senior in preparation for college. He was considered a regular double-double threat in the post.

  323. AlaWai September 24, 2012 5:47 pm

Next year we will leave some Taylor Graham Crackers!

  324. Kevin September 24, 2012 5:47 pm

Change of pace is always good.

  325. Kekoa September 24, 2012 5:49 pm

An apology via the Ala Wai Canal from coach Rolo is duly noted. Excuse me for not wanting to get too close, but I do accept that the gesture was meant in jest. Hahaha.

I’m willingly to bet a box of candy that from now on Rolo will work his team to a frazzle to ensure that they never lose to Hawaii ever again.

Take note Warriors, the Rolo gauntlet has been

thrown on your *H* so let’s see who gets the last

    laugh.

  326. Kevin September 24, 2012 5:51 pm

“Upon further review, the receiver did not touch second base. Touch down Celtics.”

  327. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 5:52 pm

I think the BOR and UH admins didn’t appreciate JD’s candidness with the local politicians. Too open, too transparent. Not representative of UH management.

  328. koakane September 24, 2012 5:52 pm

to restate what I wrote on sat or sunday, I admit leaving after the 3rd qtr. I wrote I was was frustrated and embarrassed watching the game. I stated this was not meant to disrespect the player or coaches but my honest feelings was I just could not watch any more.

  329. Kevin September 24, 2012 5:54 pm

    Kekoa,

Keep feeling it. Anyone that still feels ‘disrespect’ about what Rolo did has absolutley every right to feel that way.

I wrote earlier today that it’s the “militiant” fanaticism that feeds the soul of college football.

People sometimes think too much as fans, and in sports, as fans, people have the right to live off emotion and react as such.

Personally, I think we need more cut-throat fans that see things in “black and white” than in shades of gray.

  330. Will-I-Am September 24, 2012 5:55 pm

Donna Kim is a bad ass!

  331. koakane September 24, 2012 5:55 pm

    #326 😆

  332. Rodney September 24, 2012 5:55 pm

Did anyone think that the hit Yap put on the

    Qb was a penalty?

  333. Kevin September 24, 2012 5:56 pm

There are people that leave early in bad games and never come back and then there are people that leave early in bad games and KEEP COMING BACK.

    AND…

In between you have jerks that boo our own and so forth…

  334. koakane September 24, 2012 5:57 pm

    #316 agree

  335. Shoko September 24, 2012 5:57 pm

    Getting interesting now.

  336. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 5:59 pm

At least Seattle Sea Hawks made the game interesting down to the last play…

  337. Shoko September 24, 2012 5:59 pm

    Roughing the passer?

    Yep, in my opnion.

  338. postmanke September 24, 2012 6:00 pm

Mercado Kim is relentless. thank you!

  339. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:01 pm

i gave Rolo the benefit of the doubt at the end of the game, congragulated him on his outstanding performance for Nevada. Good for him.

but da @$$ went and disrespected our coach. that was in the back of his mind in the game, no question about that. even Romney couldn’t get that wong.

so I say dis: payback is a mudda….. and we gonna pay him back….

i knew he was a jerk when he first started coaching for Mack, watching him in the classroom, just his body language.

I’ll admit this too… I was really really hurt watching our d get killed last saturday. but I trust Coach. I trust that he knows what he’s doing with giving TK rope. i trust he knows its gonna pay off down the road.

go get em, Coach. I not gonna jump off your ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just forgive me fo da crying i had last Saturday. dat hurt! but i still gotta say….

    give me some kool-aid…

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

  340. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:03 pm

I think the referees were confused with simultaneous pass catch which would give

the ball to the offense…but Chucky the tv commentator said the ball was NOT caught

by both the offensive and defensive guy BUT rather the denfensive player intercepted

the ball, then Golden Tate put one arm in and wrestled the GB player down to the

ground, who clearly was then down, but still in possession of the ball.

    🙄

  341. postmanke September 24, 2012 6:03 pm

332 – to me that hit looked legal. he did his job, the hit was a little high. If the QB holds the ball for that long, you’re fair game!

  342. crork September 24, 2012 6:04 pm

dayo7r Thanks again for the post.Really looking forward to read more. Much obliged.

  343. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:04 pm

relentless is asking the tough questions. who was the babuuz that wen ok the money transfer? and owho okayed that person to okay the money transfer? you know the answer? how come that person wasn’t put on paid leave, they only pick on the guys who couldn’t defend themselves? and how come we came away from today’s hearing not really knowing who had responsibility to okay that kind of money transfer, and why wasn’t that a automatic time out?

  344. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:05 pm

Good question as to whether peeps will flock to the stadium if PPV is pulled.

We will probably listen to the games on the radio.

Some of us just don’t like the stadium experience.

  345. Kevin September 24, 2012 6:05 pm

    BHF2,

Right or wrong in your statements, I like your passion. Go with your gut. This is football right? This ain’t no sailboat regatta or whatever it is that they do.

No sked. Share your thoughts, stick with it, and if people no can handle… T.S. 😆

  346. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:07 pm

Plus, Golden Tate, the offensive receiver clearly shoved a defensive back away from

the Hail Mary pass. But since he graduated from Notre Dame, his sin was forgiven

and he was awarded the faux touchdown…

    🙄

  347. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:08 pm

JD did a good job at today’s hearing.

I am proud of him, the way he handled the questions from the panel.

  348. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:10 pm

    Hey hey hey!!!!

HiFlyer …. Happy birthday you old rascal you. hope you had a great day and will have a greaterr evening.

    😀

    happy birthday brudda!!!!

  349. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:10 pm

Too bad he can’t be AD again, because we need peeps like him == honest and trustworthy.

  350. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:11 pm

Probably legal counsel has a contract with UH stating that they can’t finger point to

any lawyer or staff person. So it has to be kept secret or else…

  351. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:11 pm

    thanks for the backup, Kevin.

so I wish someone would tell me who went to the meeting today,

wat wuz da play by play fo da money giveaway?

  352. HiFlyer September 24, 2012 6:12 pm

How do you go about replacing members of the BOR before their term ends? Seem like a lot of the problems started with them.

  353. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:12 pm

Hope they don’t have another fire where they keep all their records.

  354. papajoe2 September 24, 2012 6:13 pm

    Happy Birthday Hi-Flyer!

  355. westwind September 24, 2012 6:14 pm

We’ve been watching the Legislative Senate hearing on UH-Manoa. MRC Greenwood, the lawyers, BOR Regents Chairman need to be removed. Their very answers bespeak their incompetence and stupidity. The senators have been asking good questions. JD was removed without good reason. It appeared to be purely political. We are astounded at how incompetent these people in power are. Everybody should see and or read the transcripts of this session. You’ll be amazed at their testimony.

  356. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:15 pm

And dang, also could not find the “public” tv channel but had to watch on computer.

It is like they don’t want the public to see ALL the details.

  357. postmanke September 24, 2012 6:15 pm

PPV is killing recruiting. The Stadium is killing recruiting. If can smaller stadium, sell out then PPV

  358. postmanke September 24, 2012 6:16 pm

    Clean house!

  359. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:17 pm

    350.

    c’mon Ipu Man.

finger pointing goes on all the time. its time we put a real D on da investigation panel.

and some real teets in da questions. about 8 outta do it. 😀

i want to know the answer to this question: who okayed who to tell who to wire the money?

who okayed who it was okay to write the check to Florida?

see? simple. just gotta identify 3 whoooos. if you go up da chain far enough, you’ll find out how to implement da nut$ tightener so da oloz no fall off in da future.

and don’t get cut off by da fort who saying da buck stops here. doze babuuzes and bubuzzes was willing fo sack our nice guy.

i smell a biggie in da dough mixcha.

    yup, das a 5 star.

  360. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:18 pm

However, I thought M. Greenwood was straightforward and honest towards the end.

  361. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:19 pm

    Westwind.

you have hit da nail on da kinipopo.

  362. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:20 pm

    Ipu Man.

if you gonna play for us, for UH, you gotta go full blast.

what kinda grade you give Greenwood, say again?

  363. Chicken Grease September 24, 2012 6:20 pm

    # 286. Thanks for your research and finding out the proverbial rest of the story. Good enough, but, uh . . . hope he t’ink next time because a Grease agrees with # 325 :).

This INFORMATIONAL BRIEFING on ch. 49 gonna run into Hawaii 5-0 season 3 premiere time. Hahhahah, can hear someone’s vibrating mobile going off at the hearing. Hahaahah, oh, so great, many can watch this hearing. “The new ‘make A.'” (similar to “the new normal.”)

  364. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:21 pm

    The Who did it.

    Das who.

    @ 346. Ipu Man, Special Dispensation? 😆

  367. postmanke September 24, 2012 6:23 pm

    Greenwood straight what? huh?

  368. Royal Care Mobile Spa September 24, 2012 6:24 pm

It’s actually a great and useful piece of info. I’m glad that you simply shared this helpful information with us. Please stay us informed like this. Thank you for sharing.

  369. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:25 pm

Legal Counsel said it was ok.

But then WHO stepped up to the plate and said it was ok to sign the check?

And who and who double signed it?

    Das who, right BigHiloFan?

  370. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:26 pm

Yup… a rivalry has been burned with Nevada. 👿

  371. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:26 pm

    The Shadow knows…

  372. Bryson September 24, 2012 6:26 pm

People need to get a sense of humor…What Rolo did was not disrespectful, it was meant in jest I thought it was hilarious that he used the Rolo candies to do it….He called a great game and Nevada was the better team that night sometimes people look into things way too much and try too analyze that his actions meant this or that…what if it was a playful teasing between him and Ashlie Lelie who was his main target…and the fact of the matter is if this was never reported no one would be all habut about it…

  373. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:27 pm

    E X A K K L E E!!!!!!!!!!

and then they was gonna put pudding unda da buss???

  374. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:28 pm

yeah, I agree, I thought it was pretty hilarious, myself.

Rolo sets 2 rolls of Rolos on the H logo.

good grief, can’t you guys take a joke?

  375. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:29 pm

    i just love this spot!

we got some great legal minds on dis spot, who know how to read ti leaves.

and also know how for use em to wipe da you know what from the you know where.

  376. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:31 pm

    NOPE.

69-24 is not a joking matter. i thought i explained to you, gigi, i wuz crying!!!!!!!!

  377. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:31 pm

question is, why did admin dislike JD so much?

what the heck did he do to earn their vote of no confidence?

  378. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:32 pm

Big Hilo, you’re a nice guy.

But, me thinks you too emotional. Lol

  379. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:32 pm

Wow, the meeting is just getting over?

  380. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:34 pm

The FBI still has not said where the money went.

    Hmmmmm….

  381. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:34 pm

I woke up at 2:30 this morning and haven’t had a nap all day.

    going crash soon.

but who’s going to do the dishes?

  382. postmanke September 24, 2012 6:35 pm

So after all this, how the hell are we supposed to find a new AD now?

  383. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:35 pm

so i was asking Ipu Man at 362, what grade you give her at da end ahda day?

because gigi’s question at 377 is a barn burner. My guess is pudding was not a killer kinda AD, never have that glare and smile combo, dats my guess. plus never have a doctorate.

  384. HiFlyer September 24, 2012 6:36 pm

    Part 2 coming on Oct 2, @1:00pm

  385. Bryson September 24, 2012 6:36 pm

Hilo its not Rolo’s fault our D was having trouble stopping anything Nevada threw at us….Like I said I give credit where credit is due Nevada came in hungry and with a great game plan they excuted and we didn’t…that’s all there is to it

  386. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:37 pm

and no get mad at me for calling JD pudding. he’s a nice guy, never come across to me as a killer ever, so i call him pudding outta “respect.” but reallly, i do wish he had a probation officer, or acted like he pulled time at Koolau. that was my fault with him.

  387. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:38 pm

I am kinda hopeful about the game against BYU.

Someone said earlier that Utah beat them handily — and the OC at Utah was Norm Chow.

So, I think Chow will prepare our guys well.

  388. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 6:41 pm

Bryson, i also give credit where credit is due. look at the blog all day Saturday, i was cringing but givine Rolo his due.

but when you go to your “friends” house after you just beat da crap outta his kids, and him, in front of all Hawaii, and then you go and put 2 Rolos on da H, i don’t know how you look at it, but to me da man was a I D I O T to make like dat, even in fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he don’t owe his friends an apology. He owes Hawaii an apology!

me? I hope he don’t apologize. This is how wars start. 😀

  389. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:42 pm

eh, Hilo, like I said, you too emotional.

  390. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:43 pm

My legal counsel advises me not to give MG a grade so I don’t discriminate

    or intiminate or incriminate…

  391. BigWave96744 September 24, 2012 6:44 pm

I was next to Rolo, after the game. Few of his former players (names with omitted) came to greet him as well as his former teammates of staff, Ashley Lelie and Lance Samuseva. Got to talk to him smallkine and could tell Hawaii is still in his heart. Disrespect? Nah doubt it…

  392. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:45 pm

I didn’t watch Greenwood, cause my grandkid wanted to watch cartoons.

Once he left with his mom, I quickly turned the channel and watched JD.

  393. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:47 pm

Good point, Gigi, about Norm Chow’s Utah team beating BYU.

So did you post your Pomai prediction yet?

  394. postmanke September 24, 2012 6:49 pm

felt like i was watching cartoons

  395. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:51 pm

    das funny, postmanke.

    😆

  396. gigi-hawaii September 24, 2012 6:52 pm

Ipu: nah, I stopped predicting scores. Batchi.

  397. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:53 pm

So will ST comment or stick to the 5 F’s…

  398. RedZone September 24, 2012 6:56 pm

Man that was one long meeting. And part 2 is coming next month. I think Greenwood maybe a BOR puppet. A lot points to the board but the chair needs a lawyer to explain to him what his board policy means. I had to scratch my head on that one.

  399. Ipu Man September 24, 2012 6:56 pm

Hope everyone has sweet dreams tonight and great health tomorrow.

    Got to sleep on it.

    G’night.

  400. islandman September 24, 2012 6:56 pm

It came out in today’s hearing that Donovan actually wanted to extend McMackin’s contract. The chair of the UH board regents told him that he should fire three UH coaches, according to Jim, I guess Mac being one of the coaches.

  401. RedZone September 24, 2012 6:57 pm

I just think JD got screwed.

  402. laulau head September 24, 2012 7:01 pm

Ala Wai…thanks for posting that. Now I can sleep a little better.

BTW, painful to watch, but here’s the link to last night’s Norm Chow: Inside Access show

thanks for the link to the show. shut it off when Chow commented we wanna “run time off the clock”

One coach wants to run as many plays as possible scores 69. Another coach wants to run time off the clock scores 24

  405. papajoe2 September 24, 2012 7:24 pm

JD said that he could have gotten the (former) chairman of BOR mad because he didn’t act on his “suggestions”.

  406. papajoe2 September 24, 2012 7:28 pm

DMK told a lawyer that the question was for the current BOR chairman and wanted to hear what he had to say NOT WHAT YOU TELL HIM TO SAY or something la dat.

  407. papajoe2 September 24, 2012 7:31 pm

Current BOR chairman denied that they weren’t following UH policy inspite of DMK having the policy in her hand.

  408. TYaiea September 24, 2012 7:33 pm

    Pomai: BYU 56 Hawaii 20

  409. papajoe2 September 24, 2012 7:37 pm

I thought that RF talked/told JD about them taking over the MWC thing and to let them be. JD set up everything with the MWC and was in talks with them, but since the WAC threatened a lawsuit and actually did sue Reno and Fresno State for leaving (8 days after all the WAC teams agreed to stick together), they couldn’t have the AD involved in the negotiations with the MWC.

  410. oldtimer808 September 24, 2012 7:39 pm

Pomai….win or lose support Hawaii…..Hawaii 24 BYU 17. After watching the Nevada game, I thought our defense was too aggressive and not in control. It seemed that once the quarterback handed the ball to Jefferson he was already pass the on rushing defenders which created seams. It is like in aikido you use the aggression of your opponent to your advantage and you always stay balanced. Nevada moved our line to easily. I was hoping we would adjust in the second half but it was just too tough. Can only move forward and get better.

  411. papajoe2 September 24, 2012 7:44 pm

ot808~ I tink somebody already get that score because I am sticking to my only score predicition this year and it was close. I could be wrong though.

    Pomai, 22-17 UH. Go Warriors!

  412. oldtimer808 September 24, 2012 7:47 pm

It really sucked to hear how JD was not in the mix with the Mountain West behind the scenes scenario. Everything done behind his back without his knowledge. Greenwood is sly and even as she says she put her foot in her mouth by describing the Senate and minority share holders in the UH that shows her character. I’m glad we are having this senate hearing for what ever reasons besides allowing the public to view the attitude at the UH and the politics involved. Kim pressed her on why she did not release the attachments to the public and her response was basically saying from their reports the public would not read it anyway so why put it out. Arrogant.

  413. tommui September 24, 2012 7:48 pm

I watched Channel 49 from 1:00 to the bitter end. Senator DMKim would have made a terrific attorney. Behind that constant and disalarming smile were stingers of questions.

ST – she did real well. Her questioning was sharp and to the point. And, like I said, her smile hid the barbs

I would imagine that she knows that there are two attorneys on the BOR – who, like the chairman, probably didn’t know the laws governing the duties of the regents specially in regards to JD’s contract which is really a settlement of claims. Wonder who are the attorney that advises the BOR and the University

  414. oldtimer808 September 24, 2012 7:48 pm

sorry should read….Senate as minority share holder.

  415. oldtimer808 September 24, 2012 7:51 pm

Yes tommui those attorneys have a lot to be desired. The fact finder is certainly over paid with his lame investigation. Oh sorry he still has to bill the university and didn’t know how much yet as he was pressured by Kim.

  416. HiFlyer September 24, 2012 7:52 pm

oldtimer808- I think she said that the public would not understand it or something to that effect, of course wtih all the redacted names who would.

  417. RedZone September 24, 2012 8:04 pm

Why is fact finder only looking for facts he wants to look for?

  418. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 8:06 pm

Why were certain people off limits to the fact finder?

  419. RedZone September 24, 2012 8:08 pm

Why doesn’t Greenwood understand that all moneys at UH belong to the taxpayers of this state?

  420. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 8:09 pm

The only cure for UH is to take away their autonomy for a few years… straighten out the mess, see what went wrong then start all over again…

  421. madeinhawaii September 24, 2012 8:12 pm

Every year, I used to donate various sums to different UH departments… not anymore. Not till this self-autonomy is gone.

  422. RedZone September 24, 2012 8:12 pm

Is the BOR just a gang of three with 12 rubber stampers?

  423. Pomai September 24, 2012 8:12 pm

The first thing I thought of when I found out what Rolo did was think it was like “Rolo was here” type of thing. I doubt highly he meant any disrespect to Hawaii or UH.

  424. oldtimer808 September 24, 2012 8:13 pm

No 416 she said that the public wouldn’t read it not about understanding it. Kim’s reply was that the UH should have put it out there for transparency to show their resolve and Greenwood being the arrogant person said that it is out now with the Senate hearing.

  425. manoa#1 September 24, 2012 8:15 pm

you guys are pathetic getting mad at rolo when you guys should be getting mad at chow and his coaches for that embarrasing — kicking they got on national tv. that’s why da program sucks they get kill by 39 pts against usc and everybody’s happy cause we beat the spread. chow is a sweet talker but he is a terrible head coach. now i know why it took him so long to be a head coach.

  427. Kekoa September 24, 2012 8:16 pm

That was a perfect description of MCG’s testimony Oldtimer808…arrogance, pure and simple.

Judge, I too watched from the start. I was cheering for DMK as she kept MCG dancing on a string. It was obvious that she had done her homework as she was relentless in asking the hardball questions. It was her version of the hurry-up offense, as it caused MCG to make several turnovers.…and then to take the BOR chair apart, that was a classic Slam Dunk!

  428. RedZone September 24, 2012 8:18 pm

oldtimer is right. She dissed us.

  429. Think2much September 24, 2012 8:21 pm

While the season is still young and we could end up 10 and 2, the trashing by Nevada makes one wonder about a couple of things: 1) System. Chow’s ball control offense was supposed to give the D lots of time to rest. We also expected the O to hold its own against a suspect D but that also didn’t happen. After the first quarter and a half, the O couldn’t sustain drives. If no one can stop the pistol, why don’t more teams use the pistol? 2) Play calling. They were passing, not running and not running with Gregory until too late. Right now, Gregory is the only back to break consistent long runs. 3) Nevada was using “simple dives/basic options” still UH couldn’t stop the run. Looking at the D stats, the linebackers were shut out and the Dbacks were making all the stops. Not good. But what happened? Was it a physical thing?

  430. oldtimer808 September 24, 2012 8:22 pm

geez manoa you rate a coach only after three games what a supporter. I have not heard anything from Coach Chow that reminds me of a sweet talker if anything I see a man of strong character who wants a student/athletes of good character.

  431. postmanke September 24, 2012 8:23 pm

sad part of all this? Herman Frazier is laughing his ass off.

  432. RedZone September 24, 2012 8:24 pm

  433. papajoe2 September 24, 2012 8:26 pm

Plenty conflict of interest in the BOR, whether themselves or the hiring of people. I still can’t believe that the chairman denies that BOR didn’t follow protocol even though Kim read it to him and had the document in her hand. Said something like its how you interpet it. Sounded clear cut to me and obviously Donna M. Kim. They needed to get several higher up people to approve anything over $500K and JD’s new contract is over that including paying JD’s attorney fees. Also, BOR are not supposed to get involved with some things that the are doing such as being on the committee that hires the next AD. Also, JD felt that there should’ve more people on the hiring committee instead of the original 4 that was selected. He eventually got 2 of the 3 people he wanted in, but wanted to also have faculty and students represented.

  434. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 8:26 pm

    MIH,

You really think taking away autonomy from UH is going to solve all the problems?

One of the funniest lines I hear when it comes to government accountability is the line “Who checks the checkers…?”

It a question that everyone is dying to hear because it sounds really nice but is not remotely practical to administer.

  435. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 8:27 pm

    #431,

I doubt Frazier is competent to even get the joke.

  436. oldtimer808 September 24, 2012 8:31 pm

Since you got me thinking about Coach Chow I have not heard him make any excuses or throw any player under the bus. I think Coach Shoji should sit down with Coach Chow about not talking about his players not doing this or that after the game on TV but keep those kind of comments in the practice gym. Coach Shoji I know you don’t like to lose and I’m sure your players don’t either but please be more humble.

  437. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 24, 2012 8:33 pm

Took ND 3 years to get back to relevancy under Kelly. Give chow a couple years to get things set. It seems like it will be a brutal year for us. I have to keep reminding myself of the “rebuilding” aspect of our program.

Funnier that people are writing off Coach Chow and his system after 3 games.

Even funnier . . . the NFL officiating.

Alright tomorrow is a new day. Starting tomorrow all exposed, incompetent UH Administration, BOR, everybody at UH is under adult supervision. Greenwood you’re in time out for trying to radically take over the athletic dept and being mad at foosball. Shame on you. Foosball is bigger than Manoa. Ok maybe not, but as fans we don’t give a craps ass! Leave our foosball to people that know foosball. BOR Chair, you’re excused, you can resign now. No need to check with council, they going tell you best to resign too.

  446. kev-1 September 24, 2012 8:52 pm

So, this Rolo thing is on another blog too. Someone posted this. Apparently it is an email response from Rolo to someone who contacted him about the candy incident. I don’t know to much about posting rules, so I hope I’m not violating anything. Just wanted to pass it on.

“Appreciate the emaill, apparently this has gotten bigger than I had planned.

    Nick Rolovich”

Dissed yes, but we are seen as pikers. There are some that love these guys … “never experienced the level of collaboration, accountability, oversight and transparency as experienced under President Greenwood’s leadership” …

    http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/committeefiles/special/sca02/Info_Testimony_SCA02_09-24-12.pdf

A couple of season tickets are obviously insufficient to buy respect, and it doesn’t appear that either the President or BOR believes it can be earned any other way.

  448. BigHiloFan2 September 24, 2012 9:13 pm

ok. i will make kissee kissee wit Rolo next year, afta we beat da crap outta Nevada, put some Rolos in dat ugly looking woof.

but at least Rolo is putting out some good feelings. so i gotta say Kev-1, small kine peace.

    😀

  449. Moocher September 24, 2012 9:14 pm

i want DMK to call freitas up. i still insist he was a key player in this. he is the vp, his president consoles with him…he may even tell his president what to do.

logically, and sorry for not being politically correct which perhaps offers a bit of racial undertones…..but when a top dog haole runs into problems with the natives, that haole 9 times out of 10 will turn to a trusted local (like the current vice president) and say the natives are restless what do i do?

that’s why i believe freitas knows a whole lot…the guy is just too way in the shadows and way too quiet. bring his okole up to the chair and make him take a seat. i 100% believe that if you want the truth to things, get freitas to open up his mouth…then watch how fast they will all turn on each other.

  450. kev-1 September 24, 2012 9:19 pm

Shoots! I would be all for a Haka right on the 50 yard line after the game should we win. And then leave 2 packs of empty Rolo wrappers.

  451. Bleed Green & White September 24, 2012 9:35 pm

Okay, now that I’ve this “Rolo” thing all figured out, I think I can comment.

As a QB at UH, the guy played his heart out, left it all on the field, gave it everything he had. I appreciate that.

As a coach, first with QB’s then as OC, the guy loved his players, loved the state for that matter. He had fun, he helped the Warriors win, he put smiles on all our faces. C’mon, admit it!

Now he lands a respectable job with Nevada, comes back to Aloha Stadium and his does well. We sure as hell can’t blame him for that.

Them well, then, he leaves a few candies on the field as a joke. A plain /ole joke. Really? have we all lost our sense of humor?

I just read the e-mail response posted here by “Kev-1”. Thank you for that fellow blogger, I really appreciated reading that. I can laugh. Can any of you?

I was lucky enough to get know Nick Rolovich during his time here in Hawaii, both as a player and as a coach. I really like the guy.

He has a great sense of humor, and to tell you the truth, he really loves Hawaii. Not just the place, but especially the people. He’s a good guy!

I read some of the entries where some bloggers called him “no class”, a “punk”. Those descriptions couldn’t be further from the truth.

I personally know a few of you on this site, i don’t know most of you. Right now I wish I did, so you could really trust me. Rolo, you’d all like him. I know that.

    Be safe.

p.s. – Good for him, but I bleed green and white, I hope we, UH that is, kicks Nevada’s butt next season!!!!!

    In Chow I trust!!!!!!

  452. Moocher September 24, 2012 9:55 pm

i think each away game UH goes to they should leave a little something on the field in victory…

a bag of puppy chow as some mentioned for nevada, fresno or i dunno, leave a can of spam at the 50 yard line the ones with the special hawaii edition 🙂

maybe it’ll catch on in the MWC and other conferences

have fun with the rolo thing

So, it’s v ery clear. President Greenwood and the BOR wanted Jim Donovan out as AD. Period.

    They have that right.

    What’s the damn problem?

What gets me, is all the talk about “back channel” conversations. That confirms what many of been thinking / saying for a long time. Transparent processes my ARSE. Nowhere on campus de we, as tax payers get that.

Also confirmed, to me anyway, Rockne Freitas was part of the hui that wanted and got JD out. Their plan worked I guess. So, can we get transparent answers. Was Rockne getting in as AD the plan all along?

Was that process all ” back channel” as well?

But because I was already upset at the way the score was run up by them keeping their horses in to build stats, I saw this idiotic thing that Rolo did as the straw. So, Ok…ok…I got it. Next time we play Reno, I’ll meet the coaches at the tunnel with a candy lei for each of them…

laugh it up about how funny Rolo was on his last trip, and then ask him what kinda fun stuff he has planned for us this time.

    SAWARRIOR… your #122 above…

So, you mean to tell me that they’d send a young officer to say, Korea, or Germany, have him disrespect that host country… so that THAT country would want him back later as a more experienced and sell-seasoned 3- or 4- star General? Heck no!

Same as John L. Smith crapping on UH and Hawaii while with Michigan State, and then after getting fired, he applies for the head coaching position at the school he recently dissed? Are you kidding me?

On top of that, this is an adult. A Coach. An alumnus dissing his very own school. Guarantee if one of our coaches did that to a school we visited on the mainland, it would be all over the news, and we’d have a press conference for that coach to publicly apologize and then find out what his “fine” will be.

    Total BS.

So, for our joke on them, we’ll bring a Chow Chow onto the field after the game is pau, after just about everyone is gone, and have it park his ‘okole at the Wolfpack logo, and wait ’til he pau “doo” his business.

Just a joke, that’s all. No disrespect. Just a joke, really. Just a play on words/names. We’re just lucky Coach Rolo’s name isn’t something else…

Wondering how Howard Karr can have so much power and influence over UH athletics. After what came out yesterday he should resign from the AD search committee. You would think there would be some investigative reporting on the “Old Boy” network influence. SA seems to well on repeating what was said but no investigative journalism. Maybe Civil Beat will look into it?

This protects your IT offer the effort of education you tp utilize a brand new program and give an probability to make more professional documents and presentations with little extra effort. Many photographers use advanced photo editing programs to blur or sharpen their images, based on what depicted. This wasn previously possible at work, but now Microsoft supplies a selection of choices for doing that within the Office document. When you simply click a perception and choose Picture Tools -> Format -> Adjust -> Corrections on the picture tools ribbon, you can view a whole selection of slightly changed copies of your picture, enabling you to opt for the the one that you would imagine matches your document or pleases you most aesthetically. It’s also possible to access sliders for further customisation by simply clicking on Picture Corrections Options, allowing you to slightly change one of several preset options or maybe modify the previous picture. While you could change brightness and contrast in Office formerly, these new additions are welcomed with regards to increased convenience and choice.Office 2010 also provides a number of picture effects, from shadows and reflections to glow and bevel.

VonAppen, exactly! And what the heck is going on with the “Search Committee” since they don’t have any coaches on it anymore?

UH-Manoa is in the process of creating a search committee for the “search committee”. This will take some time…

After yesterdays Legislative hearing, it would be wise for BOR Chair Eric Martinson to resign. It is inconceiveable that someone who’s supposed to have the business and education acumen can be so utterly incompetent. His answers during questioning by DMK reinforced the idea that he and other BOR did not know nor understand what their responsibilities were. Instead of being the oversight and clearinghouse of the UH Admin, they were just rubberstamping. I can’t for the life of me understand how and why we get these “losers.” If you or I were to have given the kinds of answers that he gave yesterday, we’d have to move from here.

freitas’ hands are just as dirty if not more dirty then the rest, i’ve always believed this because logically it has to be. you can reasonably assume greenwood discussed matters with him. the question is what did he know, what did he carry out, what did he instigate, what did he approve.

put freitas’ okole on the chair.

eric martinson looked like a babooze, greenwood, arrogant, JD looked believable.

I think really we will all soon see the wonder blunder taking a back seat to “the board of rejects and team ganggreen”.

Nice of Rolo to ‘splain things. Don’t ever forget, at the end of the day, the guy bleeds green. I hope we see him back here some day.

Can’t wait to see what we put on THEIR field next season. Maybe a lil bit of sand from Waikiki… that will go nicely with them cold Reno winters.

Now wouldn’t it be something if after all of this, Stevie Wonder says, “Oh what the heck….let’s go play a show in Hawaii.”

For all we know, this whole post-epic fail “thing” might be being “staged” just to entice Wonder to do just this. Would’ve been the prep’ — for “both sides” 😉 — for such a “stage”? Watch Wag the Dog?

I was amused by how Donovan couldn’t seem to even say Stevie Wonder’s full name, managing only “SW”.

  510. RedZone September 25, 2012 7:59 am

    DMK not pau yet.

    Good Morning Folks!

  512. madeinhawaii September 25, 2012 8:01 am

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rolo left the candy for the groundskeeper as a way of saying “hello” to an old friend.

  513. Will-I-Am September 25, 2012 8:02 am

Before the hearing I assumed most of the screwup was Greenwood. I know she isn’t the greatest and did not help the situation. But I now think the main triggers for all of this mess is the BOR.

I still do not think MRC is innocent but I think if the BOR weren’t blowing it we would not be in this situation.

I think the BOR are in over their heads now.

  514. greenthumb September 25, 2012 8:02 am

509 guess I need to watch that movie. As for SW vs. Stevie Wonder, there was a weird explanation earlier in the hearing about why this was so. Some of the grill-eyes slipped later on, but Donovan referred to th entertainer that way.

  515. papajoe2 September 25, 2012 8:02 am

509~ The Wonder people didn’t want their name to be tied in because of all the negative publicity this has attracted. They maintain that they have nothing to do with this “mess” and don’t want bad publicity associated with their trademark name. At the meeting, more than once the people involved were told to not to use the Wonder name, thus, using SW or something else. Could be open to a lawsuit from the Wonder people.

  516. papajoe2 September 25, 2012 8:03 am

    you got it gt.

  517. greenthumb September 25, 2012 8:04 am

Much better explanation from papajoe2! Grill-eyes should be grill-ees, autocorrected.

  520. mo808 September 25, 2012 8:09 am

So much to catch up on last couple days. Glad the rolo candy thing was in jest. I mean I respect Rolo no matter what. He was a great player and coach for Hawaii and so I never thought the gesture was more than being a big kid having fun. I like jokes and having fun like most people–it’s always good to laugh!

Remember, he who laughs best…laughs last! 🙂

  524. papajoe2 September 25, 2012 8:21 am

tommui, I was going to mention those 2 names and another Regent (Karr?). Also, I think that they are not finished with Greenwood. I think that they need more information on some answers to their questions from her that needed to be looked up.

  525. Chicken Grease September 25, 2012 8:23 am

They believed in things that they don’t understand (hey. Could be worse. If was it was Aretha Franklin they were trying to get, would be telling M[e]RC[y] and Mike and Mollyvan to “Think [think about what you’re. . .]) was how this whole t’ing happened.

    Do the hearings continue today?

  527. Shoko September 25, 2012 8:30 am

Sounds like Taysom Hill is getting alot of reps in practice this week in preparation for Friday’s game. He’s an even less accurate passer compared to Riley, but he looks alot quicker. I hope the Warriors take advantage of the freshman QB and log in a few interceptions. Thus far, the Warriors are one of two teams that have yet to log in an interception this season.

Also, hope Warriors O-line holds up against BYU’s stout defense. If not, SS will get a rude introduction to Van Noy, Hadley, Manumaleuna or anyone else that find their way into the backfield.

  528. Ipu Man September 25, 2012 8:34 am

“…Van Noy, Hadley, Manumaleuna…” sounds like a law firm.

  529. oldtimer808 September 25, 2012 8:36 am

Good morning I can understand the frustration by the senate committee with the way MG, the lawyers, Martinsen kept circumventing a direct question. It’s like asking a question of your child and getting everything accept answering the question.
