Schedule change

Warrior head coach Greg McMackin announced that the school’s Junior Day has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 16, the day after the Warrior Bowl. It was previously scheduled for for April 2.

The event is, basically, an open house for high school juniors who are considered to be college-football prospects. The guest list consists of players recommended by their high school coaches. Parents and guardians are encouraged to accompany the players.

The players/parents will tour the campus, and meet with academic counselors, coaches and former players. Because this is considered an unofficial visit, parents/players must pay for their meals on campus.

Bubba Poueu-Luna spent his redshirt season shuttling between receiver and defensive back. Now set at safety, Poueu-Luna is recovering from a broken left foot that will force him to miss the first six practices of spring training. He said he hopes to begin practicing March 28, the first practice after spring break. UH will practice for two weeks, beginning next Wednesday, then take go on hiatus for spring break.

With Jordan Gomes recovering from knee surgery, more  spring reps at safety will go to Kamalani Alo, who played well on special teams in the 2010 regular-season finale against UNLV. Richard Torres has secured one of the safety jobs, and Kenny Estes will get a lot of work at the other spot this spring. John Hardy-Tuliau, who played the nickleback-like position known as quarter as a freshman last year, was supposed to move to safety. But with the development of several players there, as well as the signing of Brandon Leslie, Hardy-Tuliau will get a look at corner this spring.

Hoping to transform from a mane man to a main receiver, Billy Ray Stutzmann is sporting a new look:

Happy birthday wishes to Lab rat, Abraham Elimimian, Dan Schmidt and Seryna Ko.

Why not have 2 Junior Days?

  2. gmahoney March 2, 2011 5:28 am

Awwww, Billy Ray had such pretty long hair!

  3. Garret March 2, 2011 5:31 am

It seems that most schools that have Junior Days have *2* Junior Days. That way you can have smaller groups and more 1-on-1 attention paid to each recruit and his family. Instead of talking to a huge group at once, most of which UH doesn’t plan to offer, you can do what many schools do and make the first Junior Day an exclusive one for top recruits where most will leave the Junior Day with an offer (some recruits make a bad impression and aren’t offered).

Having 2 Junior Days also makes it possible for more people to attend since some people will have schedule conflicts on any single day that is picked. Having 2 Junior Days gives a greater chance for a mainland recruit to attend during his Spring Break, since Spring Breaks can occur anytime in 4-week period for mainland schools.

The recruits pay their own way to UH. UH is already paying the coaches and staff a salary so there is no additional salary expense. UH doesn’t even need to buy the recruits and their families food because that is against NCAA regulations.

I was calling for UH to have Junior Days 2 or so years before UH had one. Before UH had their first Junior Day, I was calling for UH to have *2* because other schools had found that was more effective. I’m glad that UH is finally having Junior Days, but having 2 would be more effective for recruiting.

I hope for a speedy recovery for Carl Clapp and Bubba Poueu-Luna.

Stutz Deuce look mo bettah now and not so manini…hope to see him have a breakout season this year.

Hope Coach can find a permanent spot on the field for John Hardy-Tuliau, regardless of what position he settles at, this is one guy that needs to be on the field at all times. Don’t like the shuffling around especially when you have a playmaker who gets moved and then next thing you know he dissapears in the mix sort of like what happened with Inoke Funaki when he moved from QB to RB. Every position on the field takes some time to learn and become second nature. Granted he’s a gifted athlete but too many moves is not always a good thing. Sort of like saying if it ain’t broke then leave it the frikk alone. To me he should be starting at one of the corner positions and then move to his nickleback position in that package where he can come off the edge and blitz or stop the run. He also needs to be on special teams where he can block some kicks! Same goes for David Graves, if he’s a QB then leave him at QB. I know in the past June Jones had success moving guys around, which is fine to get them on the field more but if they’re already having a prominent role already just leave them be and let them do what they do…just saying.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

ST: re #8 – have you been spying on me?

    Hi-ho, hi-ho, it’s off to Long’s I go …

  28. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2011 7:49 am

Two junior days sounds like a good idea.

So does three days. Even four.

Two things to consider: If it’s important to a player and his family, he’ll find a way to make the junior day.

And, in reality, every day is junior day.

I remember in the summer of 2008, I’m hanging around UH. A big guy walked past. I asked someone: Who’s that?

Person said: Oh, you know who that is.

And then — ding, ding ding — it registered.

That was Andrew Manley. He was on his unofficial visit.

So if you’re considering UH and you don’t want to use any of your official visits, best thing to do is call up the football office, and ask for a tour. Somebody will show you around. Works that way at every college in the country.

  29. RedZone March 2, 2011 7:50 am

I hope Bubba takes his time and lets his foot heal properly. Can’t play on a broken wheel. Trying to compensate may lead to other injuries.

    Happy bday to all.

    Get well Clapp.

    Stuz2 looks good to go.

  30. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2011 7:55 am

    Tom Mui:

I remember I was at Longs early once.

There were a lot of people waiting.

Then when they activated the electronic doors, everybody was telling each other: “Oh, you can go in first.”

Nobody wanted to be first. It was like the food line at a funeral.

  31. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2011 7:56 am

Clapp was back at work yesterday, his arm in a sling. I guess that stabilizes the broken collar bone.

  32. Stephen Tsai March 2, 2011 8:00 am

I finally learned why spring training is starting early.

It’s so that it can finish early (even with the spring break).

McMackin said he wanted to give players more time to prepare for final exams and finish projects. He said that was a concern with the late finish to the 2010 regular season.

Prolly, in what best typlifies Manoa’s version of groung hog day is Billy Rae wearing his back-to-training coiffure and adorned with sleevless underarmor suit that display tatooted-markings of his warrior-cult.

Want to know what a leader sounds like?

To him, continuous improvement means a split of the California swing would be a disappointment, considering that UH has won three of its past four on the road.

“That was at the beginning of the year, that was our expectation,” said Ostrowski, who’s averaged seven assists in recent wins over UC Davis, Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State. “But now that we broke the ice and we’re on a winning streak, any loss is unexpected.”

    like da man says…Nuff said……

    I like this guy.

Was on Maui last Friday to see Elton John.

Sitting next to Tom Moffit on return flight Saturday morning, told him thanks for the tickets and great concert. Tom said that was the best concert he ever seen.

Elton John started right on queue at 7 PM and didn’t stop till Maui ordinance of 9:45 PM sound curfew. He gave the back up singers and one by one back up band left the stage, but Elton John just kept banging away at the piano. Boy what a night that was.

And good thing we took a cab, driver said their charging $25 just for parking.

  52. hawaiiansun March 2, 2011 10:03 am

The basketball sparts are playing well of late, winning 4 of their last 5 home games and the loss came in OT to NEV. They will be tough on the road, so will the fresnecks. Still, the way our team is playing, fans must be reassured the bows will bring their game and challenge.

Even if we prevail on the road, we need help from others to secure the #4 Tournament seed.

Otherwise, at #5 or more, we must play 4 games in 4 days to win the T and automatic berth.

    Tough going for sure.

More importantly, at this point, should we finish strong–it will surely raise confidence in a team that returns its core plus more next season. It’s all good for the future.

“Two relatively obscure wideouts who helped their stock are Greg Salas of Hawaii and Aldrick Robinson of SMU.

Salas could be going as high as the second round after running under a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash. Since he’s almost flawlessly refined as a possession wideout, 4.5 speed of any sort should lock Salas into the top 100.”

“Gregory Salas/Hawaii: Salas did not run any blinding 40s, struggling to get under 4.5. However, he did showcase himself as one of the best underneath receivers in the draft. Salas caught the ball exceptionally well, displaying soft and strong hands. His routes were scissor-sharp and Salas looked very athletic on the field. He could be one of the real sleepers in all the draft.”

all this talk about safeties and cornerbacks makes me wish we had a big, speedy, physical psycho. think nate jackson physicality with the size of mel purcell. or an animal MLB who just punishes opponents. can’t remember the last time UH has had one. Solomon E was probably the closest, but I’m talking ray lewis size, speed and vicious. I think the safeties we have are ok, but would LOVE to see more physicality on D from safety and LB.

    Sailor Blue

Yesterday was just a blur and couldn’t get back to you. Monday night was the final class meeting for the capstone course for my MBA. Turned in a final paper that was over 5,000 words and 30 pages long! I was proud of that paper! Then, the first thing Tuesday morning, my phone starts ringing and I spent the rest of the day phoning and emailing between Alaska and Fresno on a couple of hi-priority items. That’s my excuse and it’ll have to do.

On behalf of the tail-gating Tsaikos, heart felt thanks for staying on top of the reservations for the up-coming football season!!! You and Mrs. SB are simply great people!

    Say what?

NCAA President says he’d support a football playoff system.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/ncaa/03/02/emmert.playoff.ap/index.html

    BUT, there’s a catch…

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) NCAA President Mark Emmert says he would be “happy to help” create a playoff format to decide a national championship for the top level of college football.

Emmert says the NCAA has a strong track record of running championships, but would only take over for the current BCS system if that was requested by the leadership of football bowl subdivision schools.

Without Inouye’s backing and fundraising clout Akaka would have not been able to run his campaign. Last report, Akaka had less than $70K left in his campaign account.

    Royce Pollard:

Pollard gets a golden opportunity to take over as the lead playmaker in the potent Warrior passing attack with the departures of WRs Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares. The two outgoing seniors combined to post a ridiculous 207 receptions for 3,195 yards in 2010, and someone will need to connect with quarterback Bryant Moniz in order to fill that statistical void. Pollard, who has shown incremental improvement during his three years at Hawaii, makes the best fit with the most experience.

Despite being the third option in the passing attack, Pollard demonstrated big-play ability as the go-to guy in crunch time, especially during an impressive final drive of a 31-28 victory at Army last September. The junior also demonstrated consistency by scoring in each of the final three games of the season, and has earned the trust of Moniz after playing together for three years.

  115. Gmahoney via IPad March 2, 2011 8:42 pm

Royce needs to step up and lead the receiving corps. He can do it, he had great teachers.

I simply used The Warrior Beat| UH football, University of Hawaii athletics | staradvertiser.com | Honolulu, Hawaii as the entry title in my Digg.com bookmark, as I figured if it is good enough for you to title your blog post that way, then you probably would like to see it bookmarked the same way.

The classic showdown: Billy Kenoi vs Linda Lingle for all da marbles. It’s now or never for Mayor Billy. But then again, he was for Mufi and we all know how that turned out. But then again el commandante Inouye love him some Billy. Put it this way, run for one of the most coveted seats in Hawaii politics or stay home and deal with the 400 million dollar shortfall Hawaii county is facing. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Me thinks Mr. Kenoi goes to Washington.

Ok now back to the real Billy of the day — Stutzman that is. Go WArriors!~

  119. Bigislandkurt March 2, 2011 9:35 pm

Pollard and the rest of the receivers will just need to be consistent. Really looking forward to the emergence of D. Bright and to a similar extent — Cecil Doe. I wonder if David Graves plays a “slash” position this year? QB, WR, Slot. Hope to see him on the field. Pay attention to the oline. We will see the emergence of a few youngsters this year — Chauncy for sure. And possibly one of the tackles.

On this day in the first year of The Warrior Beat blog (2007)… it was a somber day as many bid farewell to Coach Riley Wallace and expressed appreciation for his contributions. The blog had only 209 comments . The few selected comments below shows ST informally reporting on a Wahine Softball game and Tsai-ko prophetic projections…

    Comment from: 702WarriorNation [Visitor]

ST- Wow, you posted Thurs at 0650 and now this post at 0200- one long day. Was there an early event with Colt? Any details to share?

    03/02/07 @ 19:51

    Comment from: las vegas [Visitor]

I say the flag football game sounds great!

The only qualification should that the game is played in a area the size of a bball half court.

With the aveage weight (assumed) of the TsaiKos being over 200 lbs, the entire field of play will be filled with bodies.

This means nobody needs to move more than two or three feet per play and no beverages will be spilled.

    03/02/07 @ 20:33

Rich2176 and las vegas (Rasu Begasu) came through. UH @ UNLV game tickets, tailgate, and bus happened in 2007. Same for 2009 with a dinner Karaoke Call added. 🙂 See:

    http://homepage.mac.com/smurashi/photos/lasvegastsaikos.html

    …same for 2011.

  147. Coach Sale March 3, 2011 12:22 pm

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Great review. Thanks for posting such an in depth impression. I’ve handled one in the store, but your review covered alot of ground that I couldn’t with such a limited amount of time. Based on my in-store experience and your review I think I’ll be waiting for a future generation to arrive. The potential is certainly there for this device, but based on my current portfolio of tech devices (laptop, desktop, iPhone, iTouch) I’m not sure this device quite justifies the expense at this time for me.

Review About Steve Iser And Commission Crusher Software

Lately there’s been a lot of talk about this relatively unknown 24 year-old online millionaire named Steve Iser who’s exposing his software program Commission Crusher, to the world for a very limited time…

So just who is Steve and what should you know about him?

Simply put, Steve is unlike any other marketer online. With nearly 5 years of marketing online, Steve has gone from College dropout at 20 to millionaire status in less than 3 years.

He’s run the full gamut from promoting affiliate programs, creating info products, software training, sold websites, spoken at marketing conferences, created his own CPA offers and in the process of his career has already helped thousands of people create successful businesses online.

You name it – he’s probably done it. This young turk believes in “paying it forward”. In other wards, his goal with Commission Crusher is to help his 500 new students utilize his new software to create a new group of rich.

His new software program, Commission Crusher, utilizes a simple method that allows you to tap into any market or niche online and find out WHO exactly has the traffic – so you can tap into it and get a piece of the pie for youself.

Needless to say, he’s unlike most of these other “gurus” out there. He does things differently. And he takes a personal interest in helping his customers succeed.

If you want to know more about Commission Crusher and what Steve’s got going on right now, check it out below:

I’ve learned newer and more effective things by means of your site. One other thing I’d like to say is that often newer laptop os’s often allow more memory to use, but they furthermore demand more ram simply to function. If an individual’s computer could not handle far more memory along with the newest software program requires that memory increase, it can be the time to shop for a new Laptop. Thanks

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

  328. Dana Fontane March 18, 2011 7:45 pm

Greetings I recently finished reading your webblog and I am very impressed. I do have a couple of questions for you personally though. Are you currently thinking about performing a follow-up article about this? Will you be likely to keep bringing up-to-date as well? Additionally if you get a chance will you rate my personal Rappelz web page in the event that you have an opportunity?

  329. kayano asics March 18, 2011 10:45 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Documents to travel Premium is a motivating iPad app that will also be employed with and iPod touch or an iPhone. Ladies desktop application included in order to apply it for a PC or even a Mac. This app allows you create or edit documents for Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets or PowerPoint presentations employing your iPad. So rather then using ‘microsoft office’ using your laptop, you should use Documents To travel Premium on your iPad and acquire identical result. This app is indeed convenient, there’s a chance you’re outdoors yet still possess the capacity to set-up and edit documents when you require them. This app can be appropriate for doc sharing sites like Dropbox, Google Docs or Box.net.
