Saturday ramblings

Pass the remote. This is what I want to see:

A greeter: The Warriors have a setup where fans attending spring practice enter through a designated gate. It would be good p.r. — and a way to interact with fans (and potential donors) — if an administrator could thank each fan entering. What’s more, the greeter could pass out rosters. (Marketing tip: Put Na Koa’s number on the roster.)

Autograph session: After each practice, the Warriors should stage a meet-and-greet with fans. Again, it’s another chance to interact with the public, and it won’t be much of an inconvenience because there’s more free time during the spring. Besides, this is one of the opportunities because fall practices are expected to be closed to the public.

Open house: UH teams always talk about how they play for the state. Why not have a day when the public can visit the lower campus? There could be behind-the-scene tours (the football office has wonderful pictures that few get to see). The open house would serve two purposes: 1) Bonding the community and the school, and 2) showing what the programs have and don’t have. People have more of an emotional attachment to a program when they feel involved.

Movie night: Sunset at the Beach is a hit because of the price (zero) and location. Well, UH has the state’s best movie complex — the Stan Sheriff Center. Why not have a free movie night? UH would have to spring for the popcorn, staffing and cleanup, but goodwill is a great investment.

Highlight the band: The intent of the band is to maintain the enthusiasm during timeouts. But that’s changed because of the requisite announcements. UH’s musicians are talented, so let them be entertainers during timeouts. It would be cool to see the band add electric and bass guitars. It also would be fun to see more band members get solos, as well as the national anthem singer sticking around to sing with the band.

Here’s the remote. What would you like to see?

* * * * *

It’s senior night for the volleyball Warriors. It’s the last chance to watch, in person, Steven Hunt’s power game. There have been better outside hitters, but few have had Hunt’s intensity. Maybe Tony Ching? Hunt will be missed.

Great suggestions Stephen; does Jim Donovan read your blog?

  7. Will-I-Am March 31, 2012 8:01 am

I would like to see a “Welcome Ally” where team buses pull in at the stadium. Where fans cheer the home team and when visiting teams pull in everyone either does the Haka or just acts like crazy warriors.

  8. tom mui March 31, 2012 8:02 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!!

Great suggestions ST – hope the Administration will follow up on it.

And how is Wena and the knee? (Sounds like a rock band, but I digress).

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid March 31, 2012 8:05 am

I’d like to see Tom Mui as lead singer for Wena and the Knee. 😆

That’s a good one Will-U-Are. Fans doing the haka is a great idea, maybe have a short version to be used as a cheer.

  10. Will-I-Am March 31, 2012 8:06 am

I would also like to see a new mascot. I think it would be a good to have a mascot that U.H. could market.

  11. ai-eee-soos March 31, 2012 8:07 am

Here’s the remote. What would you like to see (hear / not hear)?

Let the band play during timeouts – no need for the requisite announcements.

UH doesn’t get any of the revenues – right?

  12. whitey March 31, 2012 8:08 am

ST, great marketing strategies, but like I have said before, UH is not very good at this and this is a direct reflection of what is taught at UH business classes (if they have any). In today’s world with all the tools available, you would think UH would be at the front or leading the marketing of Hawaii. A simple tool, like having greeters at the practice gate for visitors, thanking and handing out brochures is outstanding and cheap, but with UHAD marketing, it won’t even be thought of.

  13. Will-I-Am March 31, 2012 8:11 am

I love ST’s ideas to make the spring practice more like an event. I have never been to a practice. The clips from years past I remember seeing 5 people sitting under a tree on a hill and I thought “that looks boring”. Now I watch the Chow practices on news clips and it looks action packed and pretty entertaining.

It really is all about marketing and getting the fans to feel connected to the program. That equals $$$$

  17. whitey March 31, 2012 8:24 am

Within the Tsaikos there are many great marketers for UH. They have great ideas, are not afraid to jump in, and truly enjoy helping UHAD, but does UHAD even care?? A simple task of having the fans wear a certain color for the game is a big hurdle for UHAD and sometimes they can’t even get it right. Why have a “black out” game” if the fans wear black to most of the games. Would make sense if UHAD said the preferred colors for all game is green or white, but for special games, they would use another color.

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid March 31, 2012 8:39 am

I’d like to be able to purchase a replica game Uni top with my nephew’s number on it. Maybe do a pre-order for all Warrior roster numbers so friends and families can support their favorite player.

Say I’m from Kamehameha or Punahou or Kahuku or any local HS and I am able to purchase replica unis with the number of alumni from my school who are on the roster. That would be great for marketing and recruiting by establishing a deeper connection between Warriors and local High Schools.

Hey, I like that fan’s alley.

Fans are in the parking lot, so maybe they should drop off the players and let them make the walk past the tailgates.

  30. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 9:18 am

Not sure why the spring game isn’t at Aloha Stadium anymore.

At first they said it was construction, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a problem anymore.

  31. nanakuli March 31, 2012 9:19 am

I have been going to UH football for 45 years and watched practice a few times. I have never been to the UH football coaches offices and have never seen the locker rooms. I would love to see it if they had public tours of the facilities, and ask for a donation to help maintain it.

  32. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 9:20 am

I always liked the idea of a more electrical musical instruments for arena sports.

Then again, a little combo at the softball game would be kind of fun.

  33. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 9:25 am

At that new Dallas Cowboy stadium, when you exit the apparel store, there’s a guy who says: “Jerry Jones thanks you.”

In men’s volleyball, the Warriors salute the crowd before and after matches.

That would be nice for the football Warriors to do that after their practices. I think the players and coaches really appreciate having people watch their practices.

  34. kev-1 March 31, 2012 9:39 am

great ideas . . . I love anything designed to increase fan involvement. I also agree with the poster who wants to see a new mascot (although I know someone will come out and say that “he’s not a mascot, he’s an entertainer”). It is time for that change. Shoot, we changed everything else, why not that?

  35. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 9:42 am

He’ll never do it, but Houston Ala should be the mascot.

    The guy looks like Kamehameha.

  36. kev-1 March 31, 2012 9:50 am

I could totally see some warrior looking type guy standing on the sideline with a calm, serious, royal demeanor. Evertime UH scores or makes a big play, he raises his right arm a la Kamehameha statue. Much like BJ Penn does when he weighs in (or used to).

  37. madeinhawaii March 31, 2012 9:51 am

When the Stanley isn’t booked, they should show UH games there for the students and faculty. One day, they’ll buy tickets to the real deal. Maybe they even should have shown the best of March Madness and some of the Bowl Games there. Just to get the students excited about the sports.

  38. d1shima March 31, 2012 10:02 am

I remember watching Ala helping out at Speed & Quickness. When he’d demonstrate the plyometrics exercise with the jump up on the box it was AMAZING!

Imagine after each touchdown if the mascot would do a “Lava Leap” and instead of launching into the arms of the fans he ended up STANDING on the railing! 😯

John McNamara is not a UH graduate, nor is UHAD required to hire Shidler graduates. They could very well be teaching outdated things in UH marketing classes, but this is not a direct reflection if McNamara is not doing the job right.

  40. RedZone March 31, 2012 10:18 am

Leonard Peters would make a really good Warrior.

  41. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 10:19 am

There was a parable about the way to understand an ant is to become an ant, or something like that.

Somebody once asked me about suggestions on improving a Web site. I told him to ask a regular viewer. I think sometimes the best lessons are learned by sitting with fans.

  42. whitey March 31, 2012 10:23 am

nothing against McNarmara, but the question is what can UHAD do to promote UHAD, so more will participate and with participation comes financial help. I didn’t go to the WVB Regionals at UH, but understand that they didn’t have enough books or booklets for the tournament. Poor planning or not understanding marketing???

  43. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 10:25 am

I think UH needs to cater to two types of customers — die-hard fans and newcomers.

For newcomers, it’s important to provide a lot of information. That’s why I think the scoreboard should have trivia on the players.

For die-hards, it’s important to provide appreciation. It doesn’t matter if somebody spends a lot or nothing at all. It’s good manners and good business to show appreciation. You can never thank a loyal customer enough.

  44. el burro sabio March 31, 2012 10:28 am

“John McNamara joined the University of Hawaii staff as associate athletics director for external affairs in February, 2004. He supervises the department’s external activities, including marketing, corporate partnerships, media relations, advertising, promotions, licensing, and merchandising, as well as television, radio, computer operations, and internet initiatives. He also works closely with the ticket office and was instrumental in the launch of UH’s state-of-the-art, digital ticketing system.”

He’s the guy in charge of this, can’t expect JD to do everything himself.

  45. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 10:28 am

There’s a difference between marketing and promotions, and I’m not sure which is which, but McNamara does a good job of securing corporate sponsors.

  46. whitey March 31, 2012 10:29 am

another example of Tsaikomania. The softbows games are free, but due to Tsaiko marketing, a money donation box was setup and manned by the Tsaikos to give the softbows program finanacial aid. The Tsaikos and backers also set up the food booth for the softblows. Again for the softbows program. The marketing of the softbows at games is a Tsaikos and backers generated program, not UHAD.

  47. whitey March 31, 2012 10:35 am

el burro, I don’t think we are talking about McNamara, but we are talking about how to generate or market UHAD, so we can get more people interested in the program. The bonus is that they would get more financial hlep. The Tsaikos do an excellent job of helping both revenue and non revenue sports. Marketing is not a one person program.

  48. (Jesse) James March 31, 2012 10:35 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!!

Great “out-of-the box” thinking ST….Unfortunately, the powers that be usually are like Jack and stay in-the-box…

Wait…Mrs. C’s birthday is today….I thought it was tomorrow (April 1)….??? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    Nah, SISTAH…HAPPY B-Day!!!!

  49. HiloBilly March 31, 2012 10:42 am

Great posts this morning, lots of proactive ideas & suggestions. Has anyone ever talked to the coaches for their ideas & what they’d like to suggest/see done to increase the fan base & support? What are some of the things that other schools that they’ve been at do to enrich those athletic programs?

Maybe UH needs to break away from the mind-set of ‘we can’t do this because….’ to one of ‘we can we do this!’

I could go for a Shimazu ice shave right now, kinda humid in Hilo this AM.

  50. whitey March 31, 2012 10:44 am

Should UH Foundation be involved with UHAD promotions and marketing? Yes, because there are many UH fans attending various sports who are potential donors. Usually in this case I am referring to donors who want to give large sums of money or commodities over a period of time. Counselor Tom is one who does an excellent job on this.

  51. el burro sabio March 31, 2012 10:50 am

Whitey, he oversees marketing and promotions and he has people working under him that he can send in the right direction if they don’t know the way. He is in charge of setting the tone and the direction and is paid to do so, so why would it not be about him? If the Associate AD for External Affairs is not going to lead the way or makes sure the job is done, then who should? You said “the question is what UHAD can do to promote UHAD”, so shouldn’t someone from UHAD lead the way? Football is not a one person team, but you still wanted Bryant Moniz benched.

  52. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2012 10:55 am

This isn’t a condemnation of UH. I actually misplaced the TV remote today. It took about 12 minutes to come up with these suggestions. I’m sure brighter minds here could come up with great ones.

  53. whitey March 31, 2012 11:06 am

Did we go to a bowl this past year??? Did we have a winning season??? Why is Coach Mc gone???

  54. Da Punchbowl Kid March 31, 2012 11:14 am

  60. Kevin March 31, 2012 11:50 am

    Whitey,

What food booth? Sodexho sells concessions at all home softball games. As for post-game meals for the players, those are and have been handled by long time volunteers before the booster club was re-vamped. Booster funds still and always have financed it though.

  61. d1shima March 31, 2012 11:51 am

….maybe his coach can show him how.

    Not!

  62. d1shima March 31, 2012 12:01 pm

Do not attempt to adjust your screen.

Wow! When did Lou-uh-ville change its colors to Neon Orange and Black?

  63. bleedgreen March 31, 2012 12:07 pm

Basic marketing. UH needs to conduct a market study or studies. Charter the Business School’s marketing program to perform this study. Then develop market stimulation programs accordingly upon Athletic Dept. concurrence, approval and support.

  64. Wassup March 31, 2012 12:10 pm

ST- I think that Uncle Neil a.k.a “Mr. Photo-op” should get a cc of whatever suggestions are made. After all, he did promise to provide whatever was needed. Let’s see what he can do.

So far, lots of great suggestions that don’t seem like they will cost an arm and leg.

  65. madeinhawaii March 31, 2012 12:10 pm

  70. Kevin March 31, 2012 12:18 pm

    Speaking of touring facilities….

Someone once told me that they toured CAL’s softball field and learned they had no locker room. At first I thought it was like our situation with no locker/bathroom for players ONLY on site at the stadium. But they literally had NO locker room.

They had a giant Matson container outside the outfield to change in…………. WTH.

At least our Wahine have the women’s locker room to change and shower.

Happy Birthday to da mommy of da 7Flips, ColomaOhana! She’s easy to spot, just look for da sassy tita with a green bottle in her hand.

Good suggestions. Some of the booster clubs need help marketing themselves to increase membership. Don’t sense that they’re getting any assistance from the Foundation.

  73. tom mui March 31, 2012 12:24 pm

If you are interested in the softball game, you can go to the NWSU web – they have the usual play-by-play, stats, screen etc. UH is leading 2-1 in the early innings.

  74. d1shima March 31, 2012 12:24 pm

On March 27, Frank Martin resigned as K State MBB coach to take the South Carolina HC job. Today, 4 days later, K State announces the appointment of its new coach, Bruce Weber. Did they rush, don’t know, but compared to UH standards, that is a very quick turn around. UH needs to stop this selection by committee idea, JD is held accountable, let him pick, and have the contract finalized by the Regents, Chancellor and UH system President.

  87. jm2375 March 31, 2012 1:34 pm

kkobi – Hawaii Warrior Beat is a SA product, not UH. Complain to the S-A guys.

Hawaii now tied with Fresno State in the conference standings at 4-1.

Would be great to sweep NMSU and for BYU to handle their business against Fresno tonight giving ourselves SOLE possession of 1st.

28-3 is nice, but NOW the conference record means MORE.

  98. oldtimer808 March 31, 2012 2:03 pm

I watched the last two innings of the softball game on the internet. The announcer for New Mexico State really didn’t know how to provide information like the score since there wasn’t a score posted inning by inning on the stream. I was glad that Hawaii won 4 to 3…had to wait until the final out to know the score.

  99. Pomai March 31, 2012 2:07 pm

Fresno State and BYU at Bulldog Diamond was canceled due to inclement weather.

  100. Lopaka March 31, 2012 2:16 pm

    ST:

1)the greeter-who would you want to do it? I’m sure the AD, head coach, assistant coach, etc….have work to do. If they don’t then maybe that’s more of the problem. And I don’t see that this is necessary. I wouldn’t want to do it.

2)I’m sure players do sign autographs to people who ask, but to have a full on autograph session isn’t realistic because after practice they have treatment, study hall, need to eat and study. The players are still student athletes.

3)Open House- Once again, the office isn’t a museum. There is still work going on in them even after practice. Having a full on tour would be a nuisiance. Unless you did it on sundays when no one really works.

4)Movie night-Sounds good but who foots the bill, taxpayers?

5)TheBand-The band is good, but the reason there are announcements in between plays is because that is how the bills get payed.

Not trying to be a debbie downer but just looking at it realistically.

  101. Slugger March 31, 2012 2:16 pm

    Happy birthday, Mrs. C!!!

Like the ideas, ST. Think JD would be open to implementing any of them?

Sunset on the beach movies…Sunset at Ching Field movies? … bleachers, and people can bring their own chairs… the cleanup would be the part that would be hard… gotta keep the field & track clean. SSC would work.

  102. mctruck March 31, 2012 2:22 pm

    Happy Birthday, Mrs C.

  103. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:23 pm

I see A LOT of give-aways and freebies suggested.

So… how does UH or the programs (TWO SEPERATE THINGS BTW) make money off of that?

  104. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:23 pm

    FUNraiser? Or FUNDraiser?

  105. Pomai March 31, 2012 2:24 pm

    nothing ventured nothing gained:

  106. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:27 pm

1st thing, UH athletics needs a cut of the parking. Dunno why this is hasn’t been done.

2nd thing, UH athletics needs to create a corporate/sponsorship tier package and an AMENDMENT TO CERTAIN DONORS WANTING TO BE IN THE $10,000.00 CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP LEVEL BUT SPECIFIES THAT THAT MONEY GOES TO A PROGRAM OF THEIR CHOSING… GOD KNOWS SOMEONE DID THIS RECENTLY AND IN THE END THAT DONOR AND THE PROGRAM WAS OUT $10K BECAUSE IT WENT INTO THE DAMN BLACK HOLE OF DEBT!!!!

I.E. hey I wanna be a corporate sponsor because I like how the _________ program has been doing and I saw the booster club’s flyers around town. Oh, $10,000.00? Ok. (Check gets cashed and money goes into black hole of debt and the program in which the donor drew interest DOESNT SEE ONE DAMN CENT.)

    Anything wrong with this picture?????????

  107. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:33 pm

Oh and if someone get’s their PANTIES in a twist about a mere request from the student-athletes to their fans, it is enough to tell you what kind of mindset is behind marketing.

  108. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:37 pm

Oh and to be specific, softball program got BONED because of certain corporate donor rules.

  109. Slugger March 31, 2012 2:44 pm

Can anyone provide an update about the SB score for the 2nd game? Please… Mahalo!

  110. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:47 pm

In the end the BEST businesses and organizations condition their customers EARLY ON that nothing is free, BUT they also maintain a balance of customer service and appreciation via benefits and or amenities.

This creates a solid core of loyal customers and a steady cash flow.

People in Hawaii have no problem paying for something, as long as the appreciation is there and the CONSISTENCY of QUALITY with the product and customer service is there.

  111. tom mui March 31, 2012 2:48 pm

    #106 Kevin:

What the corporate donor should have done was arrange for its lawyer to make the arrangements.

  112. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:50 pm

    Tom Mui,

When I get the chance I will email you directly about some grievances. I’ve never taken the course of LEGAL advise before, but I will have to.

I am very UPSET and want to avoid this in the future. It was a potential gain now lost due to “protocol”.

  113. Kevin March 31, 2012 2:52 pm

    Tom Mui,

In defense of the donor. It should have seemed like a simple process. They wanted to support this #16/18 nationally ranked opponent and wanted the corporate level status. In the end, the program that the money was intended for was nothing but a phantom conduit in the eyes of department individuals and their policies.

  114. Slugger March 31, 2012 2:53 pm

Thanks, Kevin. I was trying to get the radio broadcast on KSNM 570 AM, but their site is not up to date…

  115. kev-1 March 31, 2012 2:59 pm

you know what I’d like? How about put some of the UH sports that are going on today on TV? Not everyone can go to the games, and the amount of public coverage of UH sports has significantly declined over the years. And I’m not talking about replay after replay after replay on OC12. I am talking about live coverage.

  116. tom mui March 31, 2012 2:59 pm

what happened to the second WSB game? The NMSU website only has the final of the first game.

  117. Kevin March 31, 2012 3:01 pm

    Tom Mui here:

We are up 2-0 after 4 innings with solo homers from Kayla Wartner and Leisha Liilii.

tom mui, NMSU live streaming went down, only have live stat now.

  119. Ipu Man March 31, 2012 3:07 pm

If you can have a rubber ducky contest dishing out money to the

winner, why can’t we have a state lottery…maybe run by the

tourist bureau to get more buyers from out of state…

  120. Lanaiboy March 31, 2012 3:08 pm

Sarah Robinson with a homer with Majam on. 4-0 Wahine.

  121. Slugger March 31, 2012 3:09 pm

    Yay, Wahine! Hurrah for Sarah!

  122. Ipu Man March 31, 2012 3:10 pm

Maybe just dish out more money for the winner of the rubber ducky

event where it becomes a lottery incognito. And maybe the UH

athletics department can come up with a similar event, like a

    rubber ____________?

  123. Slugger March 31, 2012 3:11 pm

Sitting at home in front of the computer eating Skittles is not as much fun as being at the SB game eating Skittles…

My current favorite is on a pillow in my entry way. The fabric is by Anna Maria Horner from her Drawing Room collection. It is multi-color with loose florals and a sketch of a bird.

  125. Kekoa March 31, 2012 3:20 pm

    Tom Mui #112 ~

Isn’t that why you represented a corporate donor? That was a TON of money too, IIR. Yay Judge!

  126. garage floor March 31, 2012 3:33 pm

Genuinely enlightening appreciate it. I think your audience may want more articles about termites maybe about the other types of termites, too. We had the underground ones at my house. Carry on the excellent content.

  127. Kekoa March 31, 2012 3:37 pm

I always thought it would be cool to finish the Warrior Bowl with a concert on the field. Get the many Warrior supporters in the music business cranked up for next year, NOW…Like Willy K., Amy, Henry Kapono, Nalani and crew. and many others if we put out the call early enuff

Oh…and yes, A-Joe should be the Bass player. Shoots, we can still put together the “Tsaiko All Star Band!” to open. Bulla would make an excellent MC.

Happy Birthday Mrs. C, I can’t think of a better corporate sponsor than your Greenie makers. I’m sure all of the other sponsors would love to buy additional advertising for this venue.

  128. AllG March 31, 2012 3:42 pm

So who do you think will win the number 2 QB spot? I think Shutter will be suspended for the rest of Spring and Fall camp and probably first 3 games. Do you think Woolsley will win it? Haven’t heard much talk about any of the other QBs

  129. Steve March 31, 2012 3:52 pm

    Softbows win 4-1.

Has anyone seen the UH Athletic website lately, when it comes to Wahine Softball. It is really messed up. It has the Wahine Softball team with a record of 26-6. It shows them losing 3 times in the Desert Classic in Las Vegas. No wonder the Wahine Softball Team cannot get any respect.

Great win for the BaseBows last night.

Trap shook up the batting order and it worked great especially up top. If the bottom third can come around good things can happen in WAC play.

    whitey,

I don’t know if Kevin clarified the softball info, but the Tsaikos didn’t organize a food booth. We just help the parents & friends with the post game meal from time to time. There’s a core group of people who help to feed the team after the game. You can sometimes see the BBQ smoke starting up outside of the right field bullpen in the late innings.

On road games like these, the donations we collect help to offset expenses. The $2400 we collected in 2010 when we first started went to expenses when the team was in Oklahoma City for the World Series.

    Thank you for your support!
