Sampson to miss 2012 season

In an emotional meeting last night, receiver Allen Sampson was told he will miss the 2012 season because he has not healed from a knee injury suffered 10 months ago.

Sampson suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in a victory over New Mexico State in October 2011. He then underwent season-ending surgery.

He was held out of contact drills during spring training.

Sampson had attempted to practice this training camp, but he still experienced problems with his knee.

Sampson, who signed with UH in February 2010, has not used a redshirt year. After this season, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

For those who don’t subscribe, Mike Milovale yesterday was cleared to join the Warriors.

* * * * *

Former Punahou receiver Cole Dudoit has been summoned from the “bullpen” and is now on the Warriors’ active roster.

Here’s a Punahou video: Punahou.

Random observation, but shouldn’t “Buff Nation” be the slogan for 24-Hour Fitness?

Deep breaths, deep breaths.

Ne’Quan Phillip and, Steven Lakalaka were among the newcomers who were excused from yesterday’s practice to work on a school project. Final exams for the second summer session are today and tomorrow.

Team meetings were canceled last night to give the players time to study and complete projects.

Happy birthday to Midnight.

Both Graves and Sampson really got me excited when they came aboard. It’s unfortunate the way things worked out; moreso for Sampson.

Sorry to hear about Sampson. Better to fully heal than risk screwing it up for a lifetime.

Sampson got hurt on a set-up play. The Warriors were using that play to set up a spectacular trick play.

Kiffins breakdown at this point going into Fall camp.

    http://www.usctrojans.com/blog/

Was hoping to hear about any injury reports such as Robert Woods who had surgery earlier this year and was reported still not 100% going into camp.

  18. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2012 7:27 am

That was one of those things with Rolo. A lot of times he’d call what appeared to be a puzzling play. But it was part of setting up another play.

    Game within the game.

  19. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2012 7:29 am

Got a copy of the USC media guide. My shoulder is sore from carrying it. Plus, they use that really small font that requires a magnifying glass for men of a certain age. I looked like Inspector Clouseau reading it.

  20. Wes'side Warrior August 9, 2012 7:30 am

    Howzit, everyone!

    Happy birthday, Midnight!

Allen Sampson… better heal right first. I got two crooked fingers to this day, from football injuries suffered way back about 35 years ago! Never healed right, and my doctor at the time said it “should” be okay. Of course, fingers aren’t like knees, but you get what I’m saying. Heal up and then do your thang!

  21. Wes'side Warrior August 9, 2012 7:33 am

ST… I have what are supposed to be no-line bifocals. I know I need to get my eyes checked again and get a new pair of glasses. I can’t read fine print with them on! Bwahahaha! More importantly, I am thankful for every day! Every day is a blessing! I can wake up and see my beautiful wife, and the wonderful world that is out there. And I have my treasured friends – the Tsaikos!

  37. Sportsgooru August 9, 2012 8:03 am

Realistically was Sampson going to get any PT in the new offense? He was already a small receiver and a lot of the slot time was going to Miah (if my understanding of Norm’s pro-set is correct, the receivers and TE’s are the focal point of the offense). I hope he recovers quickly but i don’t think him sitting out the season (and taking time to get stronger) is actually a bad thing. I’m excited to see a 2 TE, 2 WR set. And a fullback (finally!)

  38. Ipu Man August 9, 2012 8:04 am

    Happy Birthday Midnight!

As for Warrior football… Am I thr only one who has lost the closeness to the kids? The “this is a business” mode is not my cuppa tea. I am a fan because I support our young men in cleats. So far, I don’t get it about yhis organization.

    There, I said it.

    Go Warriors, whoever you are!

It’s the first week of camp. Everyone’s got a lot to do before opening the season against the #3 ranked team in the country (talk about “this is a business” mode!).

BTW, I am not really following their camp but I think it’s unlikely that Lane Kiffin has scheduled any “meet and greet” events for their fans this month.

Patience, like A-joe says, when dey “shock da world” erryboddy going know all dem!

    ***Off Topic***

This tickles my dill pickle. ESPN radio personality Colin Cowherd came rushing the defense of UFC fighter Jon Jones as a result of comments World Wrestling Entertainment Champion Philip Brooks aka “CM Punk” made on Twitter regarding Jones’ new endorsement deal with Nike.

Punk tweeted: “Lets reward more drunk drivers with endorsement deals!!! #responsibility”

Jones was arrested for DUI on Mau 19th and had his license suspended for six months.

What was Cowherd’s defense? He cited the WWE Champion’s heavily-tattoed appearance and profession as a reason why Brooks (CM Punk) has no right to comment on the morality of others. FYI, Brooks (CM Punk)+ is a life long proponent of the “Straight Edge” lifestyle. A modern day lifestyle influenced by independent “scene”/punk rock music and imagery and a lifetime pledge to avoid tobacco and alcohol products.

Cowherd has a history of degrading those in the sports-entertainment industry as he once spent nearly 10 minutes explaining why the untimely death of former WWE superstar Eddie Guerrero shouldn’t be mentioned in the news because his profession doesn’t demand mainstream attention. Nevermind the fact that he was downgrading a deceased individual with a family and children.

I actually have to remove my glasses when reading small type… like when reading product labels while grocery shopping! Weird.

The “reading product labels while grocery shopping” is exactly the “middle distance” problem I described to my optometrist. The answer is trifocals–for reading, middle, and distance. Bleech… tried the progressive lenses instead…costs more but no lines and does everything. See

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_lens

Wore bifocals in my early 40’s for my presbyopia but near 50 the middle distance was very vexing. Progressive lenses (Varilux, etc.) ranks up there with sliced bread…or baked manapuas. 🙂

For the life of me, I just can’t watch equestrian events at the Olympics. I also don’t think

canoeing should be an Olympic sport. And yet, they don’t have softball or baseball either. I think they should have lacrosse. I do like men’s and women’s handball. That’s very interesting. I think there is too much diving. And make football an olympic sport too. Maybe indoor (arena) football. Hehe!

Just my opinion. No bowling? They should have either Indy type racing or NASCAR too.

What about horse racing? Billiards? Texas Hold Em poker? Chess? I’m just saying there are a lot of events that Americans watch on the tube but they are not Olympic sports. Golf will be at the next Olympic at Rio. Oh, what the heck!

Let’s have football already! Man, time have gone by so fast.

Some know how softball in the Olympics effected the Wahine program in the past, but not sure how it would translate to issues for any of the baseball bows as well. In any case, would have loved to see baseball in the Olympics rather than kayaking for sure.

Softball too, but at the same time for other reasons kind of glad it wasn’t an issue this year and I think the flow of Aussies to Manoa will continue as it has in the past….

However, too bad more countries don’t play Rugby. Would love to watch that in the Olympics!

I’ll watch NFL exhibitions, mostly to see how the back ups, draftees, and free agents will do to try to make their teams. The regulars will get only token game time. Didn’t see any games on the tube this afternoon. Went out side and did some weeding while listening to the Sports Animals. Very relaxing and theraputic.

I’ve been the western regional rep for MADS (Mothers against Dumb Sons) for the past 27 years. For years my son has seen his father and I discuss at the dinner table the many stupid topics dumb sons find themselves in across our nation every single day. My son is no exception.

I’m not here to apologize for my son’s antics. He needs to learn the real life consequences every time he lets his 12 year old brain speak through his 54 year old mouth. Feel free to have your way with him. Hopefully someone will knock some sense into him so that he moves out and lets his grandmother have her room back again.

    Best regards,

    Gladys Fitzgerald Byers

#144 WAFAN – I believe she was running for the Saudi Arabia.

As you know, she was wearing a headscarf. She is a duo-citizen, her mother being an American citizen.

The headscarf on Moslems is a sign of modesty or respect for the Creator, no different from the Jews wearing yamulkah or caps. Most Catholic women still wear some sort of headcover going to church and is required in Italy (not to mention modest clothing – no bare arms, short skirts etc).

As neat as the Quack Cave sounds, the name could use some work. Is that a play on Batman and the Bat Cave? What’s it got to do with ducks? Ducks don’t live in caves, do they?

I guess if you have that kind of loot and resources, you call it whatever the heck you want.

I still think they should call aloha stadium or even a new stadium the poi bowl or the taro patch or the imu when UH plays their games there…I always thought “aloha stadium” just sounded to friendly.

The imu sounds good……a place for the warriors to cook their opponents while the cooking of tailgators happens on the outside and good food from the vendors happens on the inside. Ok…so i like my own ideas, what can i say 🙂

  156. al August 9, 2012 11:31 pm

a 38 point spread is a slap in the face to every defensive player and coach.

that means they’re saying we going cough up at least 5 touchdowns and one field goal on us whether we show up or not.

that means that if the offense scores even one touchdown we gonna give up

6 tds and a field goal.

so all you defensive players and coaches you gonna take that directly in your face or are you gonna make sure that you are gonna stand up and deliver.

“shock the world!!!”…paipai falemalu at his senior season’s fall camp.

  157. al August 9, 2012 11:33 pm

  158. Moocher August 9, 2012 11:49 pm

Al….whew, so that’s 3 people that consider it. You me, and the guy in my mirror.

What the heck…if they gonna take forever to build a new stadium, i think politicians would love to throw money at giving the stadium a facelift again to get support from the unions come election time. That being the case (if so) wouldn’t chow time go along with the imu?

I can hear Kekaula saying it right now….”It’s Chow time in the Imu”

Nothing surprises me about Cowherd since he spent nearly a whole show talking about whether he should buy his wife “new earinngs”. Then he labored to make us understand that the “earings” were actually a breast augmentation operation. Not surprisingly it was later revealed that the “earings” at $10,000 were part of his pending divorce settlement. If he were from Hawaii he would get a huge No Shame!!! from everyone.

Lane Kiffin caught lying about voting USC No. 1 in coaches’ poll

By Larry Brown August 9, 2012 – Posted in College Football

Lane Kiffin became the first USC football coach to vote in the USA Today coaches’ poll since John Robinson, and it didn’t take long for him to be caught in a lie.

On Tuesday, Kiffin was told that Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez voted his team No. 1 in the coaches’ poll. When asked for his vote, Kiffin responded:

“I would not vote USC No. 1, I can tell you that,” according to the LA Daily News.

USA Today, which administers the poll, set the record straight on Thursday by revealing that Kiffin in fact voted his team No. 1. When contacted by USA Today about misrepresenting the truth, Kiffin backpedaled.

Kiffin said he meant that he wouldn’t vote USC No. 1 if he were in the media or coaching another team.

“We have less players than everybody else,” Kiffin said. “So looking at it from the outside, I wouldn’t (vote USC No. 1). Did I? Yeah, I did. That’s not based off of 75 vs. 85. That’s based off of (USC players) Matt Barkley, T.J. McDonald and Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. When everybody has the same record, I can’t go into a meeting with our players and have them say, ‘You put that team and that team ahead of us.’ That’s why I did that.”

I don’t buy Kiffin’s “clarification” any more than I buy Jim Mora’s excuse that he wasn’t taking a shot at USC when he said UCLA doesn’t have murders a block away from campus. Kiffin wanted to look good to the public, but his move backfired. This is just another reason why I don’t believe Kiffin when he says things like this. He may be a good football coach, but the truth is he’s disingenuous.

    About Larry Brown:

Larry Brown has over 10 years of professional sports media experience, working in online, radio, and TV capacities. He recently was a nationally syndicated sports radio host. Follow him on twitter @LBSports

i’m expecting him to have more disses and dats 9/1.
