Meatoga to Bengals; tryout for Hansen

Former UH defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, who was released by the Washington Redskins this past weekend, was claimed on waivers today by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Meatoga said he leaves tomorrow for the Bengals’ mini-camp.

Also, former UH offensive lineman Austin Hansen said he has a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend.

Offensive lineman Kapua Sai is in the process of transferring from Utah to UH.

Although Sai participated in Utah’s  spring graduation ceremony this past Saturday, he needs to pass three summer-session courses to earn a bachelor’s degree, as well as gain admission into UH as a graduate student, before he can join the Warriors. Sai said he should complete work on his B.A. by the end of June.

If he meets all of those requirements, he can play for the Warriors in 2012 without having to redshirt. He has two years to play two seasons.

Sai, a Saint Louis School graduate, can play all of the offensive line positions.

Head coach Norm Chow will be the guest coach of tonight’s Call the Coach show. The ESPN1420AM broadcast begins at 6 p.m. But fans also may attend the show at the Outrigger Reef.

  24. Wes'side Warrior May 8, 2012 5:47 am

    Howzit, everyone!

I like how our “attractiveness” factor seems to have gone up a few notches, and we’re able to grab athletes (from schools) that previously might only give us a perfunctory nod.

Gotta keep working at it so we can put forth the best product on the field as possible. Want to compete and win, and not just show up for paychecks!

And yes, heard earlier today that one of my kids’ favorites, Maurice Sendak, has passed on. Aloha ‘oe, Mr. Sendak! Your work will be forever loved and remembered!

Previewing the Utah Utes: Part I – Coaching and Offense

by AHMB on Nov 10, 2011 9:41 AM PST in Football

The last time UCLA traveled to Salt Lake City to take on the Utes, Utah blasted the Bruins by a score of 44-6. The following year, UCLA traveled to Provo to take on BYU and 59-0 happened. Needless to say, the state of Utah has not been kind to UCLA in recent history.

The Utes are undergoing changes in Kyle Whittingham’s 7th season as head coach. Not only is Utah playing in its first season in a BCS conference, but the Utes converted from a spread offense to a pro-style attack by bringing in offensive coordinator Norm Chow. The results of the changes have not been pretty, as Utah is currently ranked 111th in total offense. It’s unclear if the problem stems from increased competition or a poorly designed offense, but the issues have only been compounded due to the loss of starting quarterback Jordan Wynn for the season.

    Coaching Staff

Whittingham has been at Utah since 1994. He became defensive coordinator in 1995, and took over for Urban Meyer as head coach in 2005 when Meyer left for Gainesville after two seasons coaching the Utes. The program has not skipped a beat under Whittingham, as he has gone 62-24 in his 6+ seasons, including a 13-0 2008 campaign.

Utah jumped at the chance to sign Norm Chow cheaply in the offeason. As a Utah graduate and fellow LDS member, Chow fits in to Utah’s culture, even if his offense did not fit his players. Utah had been running a spread offense since Meyer’s tenure, and they are going through growing pains this year in the new pro-style attack.

Defensively, Kalani Fifita Sitake is in his third year as defensive coordinator. Utah is 25th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 20.8 ppg. They are very good at rushing defense, allowing only 95.4 ypg, 10th in the nation, but they do give up 244.8 ypg through the air, which is 86th nationally.

    Quarterbacks

With the loss of Wynn, Utah has turned to Jon Hays (Jr. 6’0, 212 lbs.). Hays is a transfer from Butte CC, the same CC that produced Aaron Rodgers. Hays struggled when he was first thrown into action, but he has improved lately, throwing for 4 touchdowns and no interceptions the last two games after throwing 7 interceptions the previous 4 games.

Utah’s back-up quarterback situation is murky at this point. Freshman Tyler Shreve (6’4 235 lbs.) is clearly the quarterback of the future, but Utah has decided to redshirt him this season, despite the fact that he was initially Wynn’s back-up to start the season. That leaves Griff Robles (So. 6’4 235 lbs.) as back-up, despite the fact that Robles converted to linebacker in the offseason.

    Running Backs

John White (Jr. 5’9, 190 lbs.) leads the Utah rushing attack. White has eclipsed 1000 yards this season with 1024 yards. He averages 5.0 ypc and has scored 10 TD’s. Despite his smallish size, the JuCo transfer takes the lion’s share of the carries and does not leave much for his backups.

Harvey Lang (Fr. 6’1, 221 lbs.) is second on the depth chart, but he has only 10 carries for 40 yards on the season. Tauni Vakapuna (Sr. 5’9, 229 lbs.) has 17 carries for 27 yards, but is listed behind Langi on the depth chart.

    Receivers and Tight Ends

Utah lost Jerome Brooks to graduation, but DeVonte Christopher (Jr. 6’1, 200 lbs.) has stepped up as the #1 wide receiver. He has 27 catches for 433 yards and 4 TD’s despite missing two games.

The future is also bright at this spot with Dres Anderson (Fr. 6’1, 185 lbs.). The true freshmen beat out Reggie Dunn (Jr. 6’0, 173 lbs.) for the starting role and has 21 for 308 yards and 3 TD’s. Dunn has also caught 14 balls for 208 yards and a TD.

Kenneth Scott (Fr. 6’3 205 lbs.) and Luke Matthews (Jr. 6’2, 206 lbs.) will also see action.

At tight end, Dallin Rogers (Jr. 6’3, 245 lbs.) started well but has been out since the Pittsburgh game. Jake Murphy (Fr. 6’4, 255 lbs.) starts in his place and has made 5 catches for 64 yards and a TD. Kendrick Moeai (Jr. 6’5, 260 lbs.), the presumed starter before the season, is the second tight end. He has added 8 cathes for 37 yards.

    Offensive Line

The Utah offensive line returned 3 starters from last year, but the unit has given up 23 sacks and 59 tackles for loss this season. However, the sacks have been up and down, as 7 of the 23 sacks came against Pittsburgh and 4 came against Cal.

Tackles Tony Bergstrom (Sr. 6’6, 315 lbs.) and John Cullen (Sr. 6’5, 305 lbs.) form a solid pair of tackles. Bergstrom is a future NFL tackle, and Cullen is a JuCo transfer who is a physical run blocker. The primary backup at tackle is Kapua Sai (So. 6’5, 307 lbs.).

Inside, Tevita Stephens (Jr. 6’1, 300 lbs.) moves from guard to center. While he will quarterback the line, he also left the guard position inexperienced. Mike Mason (Jr. 6’3, 316 lbs.) and Sam Brenner (Jr. 6’4, 300 lbs.) start at the spots. Mason is another JuCo transfer, and Brenner is in his first season starting.

you notice da similarities as stated by some worrywarts? As da Utes found out at da end of last year, Coach Chow knows what he’s doing.

enjoy da ride with us, Coach Chow. enjoy enjoy!

    and welcome home Klayton.

make yo professa pops and yo mama proud. 😀

Tings r lookin up, I like it!!

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid May 8, 2012 7:20 am

  40. A-joe May 8, 2012 7:41 am

I’ll take the ones that wanna be here.

    Awesome!!

  41. wafan May 8, 2012 7:51 am

    So, the Sai’s matter.

  42. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2012 7:58 am

    Wafan:

Yep. Tsai’s matters was going to be the name of the blog until the suggestion got axed for having “sexual connotations.”

I tried to come up with the most straight-forward name after that. Thus, “The Warrior Beat.”

Reminds me of when Meatloaf said he was going to write the most basic love song. Thus, “Two Out of Three.”

  43. A-joe May 8, 2012 8:03 am

    39. Hawaiian, Da Homophone is in high gear dis morning, eh? lol!

  44. koakane May 8, 2012 8:09 am

howzit howzit 808 beautiful day in Hawaii nei

future looking good for the warrior fball team, we’ll see how all pans out in a few months. is it sept yet bwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

its HS state baseball on Oahu, D1 (no not mr carwash) at LMS and D2 at Hans L’Orange.

interesting to see Kailua seeded 1, MPI 2, Waikea 3 and Baldwin 4. Kailua did played a low key season and surprised many. MPI in the lime lite cause of the ILH battles with Punahou and KS. Waiakea may be a sleeper cause many of the kids that won LL Big league World Series is on the team and they can hit the ball (think they may be coached by kolten wongs pop). another could be Baldwin (went thru the Iolani tourny undefeated and should have played MPI for title but played the early game cause they had to catch plane back to maui note MPI didn’t want to play early -mmm jm# what say you?)

D2 has Waimea (hey lizk) 1, Waipahu 2, Seaberry 3, and KS big land 4. Looking like a wide open affair with Kalaheo may play the surprise role.

anyway pick your venue and go enjoy, I am, so till lattas ……….. ALOHA

  45. koakane May 8, 2012 8:13 am

ST: I don’t get the sexual connotation reference to “Tsai’s Matters”.

Oh wait, just as I finished typing, I think it came to me. Is it because it sounds like “size”?

The biggest upside to Kapua Sai is that he is a kid who is obviously making the most of his scholarship. Getting his degree in three+ and being in a position to complete a Master degree while on roster is a job well done and speaks very highly of him and his motivation.

    Good recovery DPK.

We missed you & Sweety at da carry-o-key event. It would have been interesting to have your evaluation of the Broke Back incident. It’s Tuesday and I’m still trying to figure out what I witnessed!

  63. Curt May 8, 2012 10:18 am

Does anyone remember Gavin Smith? He’s the 20th Century Fox exec who’s still missing. News articles say he played basketball for UCLA and don’t mention that he played his senior year at UH. I remember him shooting the ball every time he got it. He averaged about 23 pts per game that season; I think that’s still a UH record. Here’s a link if you’re interested:

Sai went to Utah knowing what his field of studies were going to be and presumably knowing they didn’t have all the courses he needed. Now he wants to come home and have UH pay for the rest of his schooling. I say no way, we don’t need him that badly

  72. al May 8, 2012 11:04 am

so when kapua and kiha lineup side by side it would be safe to say that sai-men is being served?

  73. SteveM May 8, 2012 11:06 am

  74. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2012 11:07 am

    Tsk, tsk.

Never joke about firearms at the airport screening …

  75. Haleakala May 8, 2012 11:09 am

Boise State and San Diego State will surely be re-evaluating the pros and cons over the next few weeks of moving over the the Big East conference. One important factor that was previously on the pro side is going to disappear, that is the AQ setup of the BCS. The Big East might not even qualify for AQ even if the setup did not change. The one thing that they can hope for is a lucrative TV contract. But with the defections of some of the member schools, the future contract won’t be as lucrative as they had hoped. On the negative side, the team and their fans will have some long plane trips. Which way will the scale tip?

  76. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2012 11:12 am

Boise needs to have more self esteem.

Instead of going to a conference to be part of a draw, the Broncos should realize they are a draw. They’re the Gonzaga of college football.

  77. Haleakala May 8, 2012 11:14 am

It would be great to see the Sai brothers playing together.

Good Luck to Vaughn and Austin – Go Warriors !!!

” … Former UH defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, who was released by the Washington Redskins this past weekend, was claimed on waivers today by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Meatoga said he leaves tomorrow for the Bengals’ mini-camp.

Also, former UH offensive lineman Austin Hansen said he has a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend. … “

Kerry Rupp leaving UH basketball team for Montana coaching job.

” Kerry Rupp, director of operations for the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team this past season, will leave to join the University of Montana as an assistant coach, UH announced today.

Rupp came to UH last year after being replaced as head coach at Louisiana Tech. He coached the Bulldogs for four seasons.

“I’m excited for Kerry and grateful for the time he spent here in Hawaii,” UH coach Gib Arnold said in a press release. “He’s an outstanding coach and good friend. I’m glad he will be back on the floor coaching and recruiting as that’s what he was born to do.”

    …. SA breaking news …

    So jm2375, I still don’t get the “Miami” connection…

Sorry if I am dumb on steroids.

I used to frequent MidPac’s Owl thrift store a lot in the old days

when it was around. And remember buying expensive mumus

at their annual white elephant sale…for a buck each.

    (not for me…)

  92. jm2375 May 8, 2012 1:16 pm

Ipu Man – you need to read the story, but both twins will be attending Miami in the fall on full scholarships (not sure if they are for academics or arts).

  95. A-joe May 8, 2012 1:25 pm

    76:

Simple greed and arrogance are what motivated Boise St. Ignorance is what fueled their demise.

Boise got caught up in the hype. They totally believed their crap didn’t stink. Dollar signs and the media distracted them from doing their due diligence not only on the Big East, but Marinatto himself.

Had they done their homework, Boise would’ve:

-Found the Big East on shaky grounds since day 1 with the BCS.

-Seen how then commissioner Mike Tranghese spent the better half of his tenure begging his contacts inside the BCS to grant the Big East reprieves every year.

-Discovered the powers that be in the Big East are basketball institutions, not football. Boise would’ve seen the Basketball elite’s animosity towards football schools with inferior basketball programs.

-Realized how inept and ill qualified Marinatto was for the position. All they needed to do was ask out going institutions their true reasons for leaving. Ask the remaining ones why they can’t get along with John.

-Watched the BCS landscape begin to change and fall apart.

Had Boise simply read, “Death to the BCS” their choice would’ve been otherwise.

I know, make ass but, Boise not going.

  106. al May 8, 2012 2:20 pm

so ralphie…you think that we’ll be one of the seeded teams?

  107. Ipu Man May 8, 2012 2:22 pm

This was reported Sunday by Boise KIVI-tv:

“…Everything seemed fine until the Western Athletic Conference started crumbling. The WAC is on life support and may not live much longer – leaving Boise State’s non-football sports, once again, homeless.

The Broncos now have few options. Either they can pay a hefty fee ($10 million dollars) to leave the Big East in 2013 and stay in the Mountain West Conference – or – beg other leagues to reconsider and allow BSU to possibly buy into a conference to house non-football sports.

For the most part – BSU has remained mum on its future.

Boise State athletic director Mark Coyle attended last week’s MWC meetings and issued this statement at the end of the week:

“We continue to closely monitor the changing landscape of college athletics as a result of the latest news on conference realignment. During this time of change, we remain committed to making the best long-term decisions for Boise State University.”

Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson told Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman that Boise State can’t return unless football is part of the package.

“Football allows you to play your Olympic sports in the Mountain West,” Commissioner Craig Thompson told the Statesman Friday, reiterating that the league is not an option for Boise State’s non-football sports if the football program moves to the Big East as planned in 2013.

Thompson declined to say whether the Broncos actually have expressed interest in returning…”

    🙄

  108. Ralph May 8, 2012 2:25 pm

Our rpi is too high, 20, only the top 16 are seeded.

  109. wafan May 8, 2012 2:26 pm

    Wait.

“’Football allows you to play your Olympic sports in the Mountain West,’ Commissioner Craig Thompson . . .” should UH consider putting some of its Olympic sport in the MWC?

    Seems he opened the door.

  110. Stephen Tsai May 8, 2012 2:29 pm

    Wafan:

I think it makes sense to have all of a school’s sports in one league. So I asked around about why UH doesn’t place its Olympic-sport teams in the MWC. I heard such things as easier travel in the Big West, don’t have to play in altitude, etc. and so forth.

The bottom line: MWC never invited.

  111. Ralph May 8, 2012 2:30 pm

Prior to playing Utah State this past weekend we were 18th in the rpi, after sweeping Utah State and scoring 37 runs to their 5, we dropped to 20th place by the NCAA.

  112. al May 8, 2012 2:32 pm

doesn’t sdsu and bsu have until june to renig on the big east?

  113. al May 8, 2012 2:33 pm

mwc basketball is definitely an upgrade.

  114. BG May 8, 2012 2:54 pm

    Ralph

Are the RPI ratings the sole determination for the softball tournament seedings?

    BG

  115. UHAlum91 May 8, 2012 3:03 pm

As the saying goes “what goes around, comes around.” It was Boise who thot they were too good for the WAC when they bolted to MWC, and now to the Big East. If it wasn’t for them who started the notion that the WAC wasn’t good enuff, maybe the MWC wouldn’t have poached the other WAC members when solidarity was beginning to falter. Now when they need the WAC the most for their other sports, they might be the one being shafted.

    Karma’s a B*tch, isn’t it?!?!

  116. kapakahi May 8, 2012 3:30 pm

FYI…..Jeff Garcia (former 49er QB and Austin’s advisor) really hustled to personally convince HC Andy Reid to invite Austin to this weekend’s rookie camp tryouts with the Eagles.

Also helped greatly to have Pat Harlow (former SC, Raider & Patriot Olineman as well as also Austin’s advisor) work his personal connections with his former Patriot teammate Eugune Chung (former Virginia Tech Olineman and current assistant strength coach with Eagles).

Good luck to Austin this weekend!

Just in case, Garcia already is working on at least one other lead with another NFC East team to give Austin a look. Personal connections are apparently making a difference!

  119. Ralph May 8, 2012 4:15 pm

BG the seeding is weighted more toward the rpi than the coaches poll.

  120. HawaiiMongoose May 8, 2012 4:28 pm

Al, re #115, I keep reading different things about Boise’s exit penalties. It seems they will still have to pay a penalty even if they renege before July 1st, but the obstacles to and cost of backing out go up if they wait until after that date.

  121. cocobean May 8, 2012 4:28 pm

#63. Curt, I remember Gavin very well. Was a 3pt. specialist before there was a 3 pt. line. A true mad bomber. He would have averaged 3 or 4 more points a game if there was a 3 point shot.

  141. al May 8, 2012 7:48 pm

okay, i’m gonna be the one to say it.

apparently there is a stall in men’s bb recruiting. its not like the gibber to leave one last scholie out there. now, granted there are two hot prospects that he’d really like to have this year.

a stall like this could only mean one thing, in my opinion, and that would be that the two need to get past some academic hurdles before being declared eligible by the ncaa and the tough university of hawaii standards.

i guess results will be in soon. april 15 is the last day of a binding letter of intent for the spring signing period. a scholie could still be awarded, however, there are escape clauses for out of period signings.

  157. BigHiloFan2 May 9, 2012 6:12 am

i wuz wonderin how fo hamo dis thorn from yesterday’s posting about Mr. Sai returning home.

and it came to me…. some peeps talk down peeps who are doing good, who maybe can help us make a betta team. maybe negative waves make dem feel good. take for instance big brudda Sai who like come home and like and can play 2 years fo us. he’s a known talent to Coach Chow. Coach Chow is our head coach. Coach Chow makes da decision. should be end of story. but no, some tell he… already get a degree…. anyway, enough wit da negative waves. das my opinion, an i’m sticking to it.
