VB Warriors sign two

The volleyball Warriors signed Jan-Philipp Marks, a 6-5 outside hitter who plays for Germany’s Junior National team, and Taylor Averill, a 6-7 setter/outside hitter who redshirted as a UC Irvine freshman this year. UH coach Charlie Wade said Averill is skilled enough to also play middle blocker.

Both will compete for vacancies created by the departures of outside hitter Joshua Walker and setter Nejc Zemljak. They are so-called “six-rotation” players who are skilled passers, defenders and hitters.

* * * * *

The Warriors’ recruiting drive apparently was not sidetracked despite burglars stealing the GPS in offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich’s rented car.

During a 10-day recruiting trip that concludes tomorrow, Rolovich and running backs coach Brian Smith will have visited about 100 schools in California.

During this evaluation period, coaches are allowed to scout players — many of the California teams have padded spring practices in May — and make one call per week to each recruit. Schools may not make written offers until September of a prospect’s senior year.

Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda spent a week recruiting in California, and defensive line coach Tony Tuioti is completing a recruiting tour to American Samoa and Australia.

As one UH coach said, “We’re searching for future Warriors.”

* * * * *

So much for the Punahou reunion in Seattle in September. Kimo Makaula and UH’s Cayman Shutter shared quarterback duties at Punahou. Makaula also played running back, tight end and defensive end. D1 reports that Makaula is transferring from Washington to Idaho State.

* * * * *

Recruiting analyst Brandon Huffman is reporting that Punahou running back Steven Lakalaka has made a verbal commitment to UCLA. Huffman said Lakalaka is the Bruins’ first 2012 commitment.

Happy birthday to our Young Einstein — Jason.

And birthday wishes to my pal, Gwyn Pang.

    Howzit Everybody,

Looks like recruiting is starting to heat up.

    Lrob #27,

No doubt, Steven Lakalaka is a big time power back. He will turn heads again this year if he can stay healthy. This is a pretty solid pick up by UCLA if he stays committed.

  29. djmitcho May 17, 2011 10:49 am

    Happy Birthday Jason

  31. Garret May 17, 2011 11:24 am

I hope that all of the travel/scouting by the coaches pays off in an excellent recruiting class. They are putting the effort in and visiting the schools, a good use of the increased recruiting budget that football got when JD took over

Article discussing how Boise State’s game vs. Georgia could be a decisive factor in whether or not the MWC becomes an AQ conference. I’ll be cheering for BSU to run the table this year, as that would really improve the MWC’s BCS numbers before the BCS evaluation period ends after this season.

No pressure, Boise State, but the Mountain West’s future may hinge on beating Georgia

At least, that’s how it looks to MWC commissioner Craig Thompson, who told SEC oracle Tony Barnhart this morning on Barnhart’s radio show that a Bronco win against an SEC heavy, in its own backyard, would be “huge” for the conference’s quixotic effort to wrestle an automatic BCS bid (and the full payout that goes with it) out of the bigger leagues. The next round of planning by BCS conference commissioners will be the last time Thompson gets to list TCU’s stellar track record on the Mountain West resumé before the Horned Frogs hop to the Big East next year

CU finds punter to boost their average….

The Colorado football program is adding another transfer to its roster who won`t have to sit out the 2011 season, the normal protocol under NCAA rules.

Mark Brundage will provide competition this fall at punter for sophomore Zach Grossnickle, who faced almost no hurdles in earning the starting job last year. Grossnickle struggled to be consistent during his first full season as the Buffs` punter last fall. He averaged 35.7 net yards on 60 punts.

Brundage was a standout athlete at Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora prior to spending the past three years in Houston at Rice University. He was the Owls` primary punter and kickoff man during the second half of the 2009 season following an injury to All-American punter Kyle Martens. He averaged 44.2 yards on 26 punts that season. Martens reclaimed the starting job in 2010.

Brundage is graduating from Rice this month and doing so with eligibility remaining allows him to transfer anywhere without having to sit out a year. He is the second player to take advantage of that rule to join the Buffs this offseason.

Five scholarship players left the team, leaving Coach Embree an open door to bring in transfers with immediate opportunity to play in the fall.

It is interesting to me that more College Presidents say that Athletics has a *positive* financial impact than a negative one. All we hear about are that Athletic Departments (at least for the non-AQ schools) are losing money, but the college Presidents know what the real numbers are and they seem to paint a much better situation for athletic programs.

Only a quarter of college presidents at four-year public universities say intercollegiate athletics has a positive financial impact on their institutions, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, in association with The Chronicle. Thirty-nine percent of presidents at four-year, private universities say it does.

By comparison, 22 percent of public-university presidents and 15 percent of private-university presidents said sports has a negative financial impact on their institutions.

    Reposting Rich2176’s update from yesterday…

    Rich2176:

    May 16th, 2011 at 11:28 am

    UH VS UNLV 2011

    Ticket Status Update

Okay, so in 2007, I had no problem getting a group discount from the UNLV ticket office and was able to pick up the tickets prior to single game seats becoming available. (I.e., they had group blocks to distribute.) In 2009, no more group discount, but I flew to Vegas on June 1, the first day of single season ticket sales and got our 240 tix.

This year is starting to annoy me. A month or so ago when I called the ticket office, I was told single game tickets would go on sale the beginning of July. (A month later than in 2009 – perhaps to get as many season ticket sales as possible?) Today, I was told in the middle of July, but to call back in mid-June for a possible “pre-sale” to the Tsaikos. I’ll keep everyone posted.

It is very important that you all let SteveM your ticket intentions since I’m going to base the group size from that list. Currently, it’s around 70 or so. I’m thinking by September we will have 150-200 committed.

Tsaiko-Vegas #3 attendees, ticket requests, and activity RSVP’s are listed. All request numbers are for planning purposes only and are considered tentative until final confirmation is announced by Rich2176 and Rasu Begasu.

Note that UH-WA game plans are on the same page. Please send any plan updates or changes.

  79. rage777 May 17, 2011 6:19 pm

Wow, that is a skilled volleyball player. 6’7″ setter, OH, and MB. That’s some major skills. Averill just has to work on being a libero, and he would have every skill. I hope he has a wicked jump serve.

  80. al May 17, 2011 6:45 pm

curt…we might be done with mbb recruiting afterall.

the only thing that could change this is grades and/or a big time transfer comes along.

I think UH women’s volleyball has some big news. Ann Miller was writing the story. I overheard some of the chatter in the office today.

  88. Guy in the office May 17, 2011 7:31 pm

Re: Kameron Steinhoff. I just missed the KHON report so I checked its web site. Story says he’s in critical condition at Queen’s. Has he since passed? Either way, sad news for one of Hawaii’s top prep athletes.

  90. Curt May 17, 2011 7:42 pm

Sounds like Charlie Wade is re-loading his team. Hopefully, they’re impact players. Welcome to the ohana.

  91. Curt May 17, 2011 7:47 pm

Big news regarding women’s volleyball? I hope it’s good. Is it about a new commit, a coach, or an existing player? Hmmm.

  92. Curt May 17, 2011 7:56 pm

I don’t think a new commit would be considered “big news.” So, I’m going to speculate that the news has to do with an existing player or coach. That’s enuff on my speculating on my part.

  93. Curt May 17, 2011 8:02 pm

    al

I believe you’re right about the mbb recruits. Hopefully, they nailed it in the classroom.

  94. Ralph May 17, 2011 8:07 pm

On this day (May 17) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … count was 301 comments four days before HF is due to go to the big “principal’s office” (the legislature). Two seemingly unrelated comments stood out…

    Comment from: Stretch [Visitor]

It would be funny if one of the Tsaiko’s goes to the hearing with a “Tsaiko” sign to let HF know that we are not “hiding”. I am working on the outerisland right now so can’t make it but will let HF know who I am when the season starts when he sits in his pressbox. I try to keep my comments on the whiteboard for the opposing coaches but will save the first message of the season for HF.

    05/17/07 @ 09:47

    Comment from: Rich2176 [Visitor]

Almost 70 Tsaiko ticket requests for the Vegas game. I’ve decided to cap it out at 100. (That’s a lot more than the 20-30 that was originally planned!)

I spoke to ST about possible Advertiser assistance in getting “Warrior Beat – Tsaikos” signs and he is truly humbled by what he’s created. Nice going everyone!!!

    05/17/07 @ 20:16

    What resulted: http://homepage.mac.com/smurashi/photos/lasvegastsaikos.html

As I recall, Rich2176 conferred with Addahknowjoe who created the designs, made the signs, and carried them to Vegas . There was no mention of the ‘Tiser assisting.

    Prayers for Kameron.

  108. Curt May 17, 2011 9:32 pm

    LK

#103 Yes. I figured everyone else was watching 5-0. How was the season finale?

  109. Da Punchbowl Kid May 17, 2011 9:40 pm

    Curt –

5-0 ended with truly unbelievable cliffhangers for all of the show’s stars and had that irritating “To be continued…” graphic at the end of the show.

  110. gigi-hawaii May 17, 2011 9:44 pm

I’ve watched only 3 episodes of 5-0. The first, last week, and this week.

This week: 2 actresses are out of work b/c they were killed off.

Don’t know about you, but I think 5-0 is really plot driven. I probably won’t watch it next season.

  111. gigi-hawaii May 17, 2011 9:46 pm

    Dancing with the Stars?

I think Chelsea will win. Hines Ward will come in 2nd. And Kirstie Alley will be 3rd.

  112. gigi-hawaii May 17, 2011 9:47 pm

Haven’t watched Idol at all. Boring.

  113. Slugger May 17, 2011 9:47 pm

I plan to rent it when it comes out in DVD.

3D glasses are so annoying to wear.

Thanks DPK. Sounds like the 5-0 finale was pretty good. Missed out.

  119. LK May 17, 2011 10:13 pm

    Hey Curt,

    re: 108

Like my 12 year old says “It’s all messed up.”

Btw, he still watches cartoons, so I think all of the conflicts and cliffhangers kind of upset him.

  120. Curt May 17, 2011 10:20 pm

    gigi

In terms of dancing skills, you probably got the order right. Chelsea has the best technique. I am surprised how well Kirstie executes her technique. However in terms of recognition and popularity, the order is probably in reverse. The best dancers don’t always win. And I’m talking about real world dance competition.

  121. Curt May 17, 2011 10:25 pm

Thanks LK. Your 12 year old doesn’t like conflict and cliffhangers? But that’s what marriages and sports is all about. 🙂

  122. Curt May 17, 2011 10:30 pm

Okay. It’s time to catch some zzzzzzz. That is if I can sleep after ST teases us about some “big news” on women’s volleyball.

  127. al May 17, 2011 11:02 pm

    methinks that hines will win.

  128. al May 17, 2011 11:03 pm

    who doesn’t watch american idol

knows not aretha franklin, etc., etc.

  129. gigi-hawaii May 17, 2011 11:14 pm

Hines has an interesting history. His Korean mother and black dad moved to the states to get away from the racial bigotry in Korea.

Unfortunately, the marriage failed and his mom had to work 2-3 jobs to support her son.

After enduring taunts about his ethnicity, Hines found acceptance and adulation in sports. And the rest is history.

Being Korean, myself, I’d like to see him win. He is an excellent dancer, but Chelsea is better. I’ll be shocked if she doesn’t win.

  130. gigi-hawaii May 17, 2011 11:16 pm

I would watch Idol just to see J. Lo, whom I admire. But, since hubby doesn’t want to watch it, I don’t either. Don’t even know when it comes on.

  139. Ralph May 18, 2011 2:23 am

Shoji is recruiting earlier than ever, Tai Manu-Olevao already committed for 2012, now he has Taylor and Higgins for 2013.

Taylor is already at 6’3 and only a sophomore in HS. Her brother Josh is 6’8. Wouldn’t it be nice if she grew to 6’8 and played OH. 🙂

  140. Ralph May 18, 2011 2:26 am

Danielson, Forsythe and Satele finishes their eligibility in 2012. Maeda and Hewitt in 2013.

  141. Ralph May 18, 2011 2:30 am

Good news for Rainbow baseball, attendance is up 60% from 3 years ago. Tougher competition at home and the play of guys like Kolton, Vinnie, Linsky, Garcia and McDonald really helped energize the Bows fans to come out and watch the game at Murakami Stadium.

  142. Ralph May 18, 2011 2:36 am

None of the guys mentioned will be around next season, so who will step up next season, will it be Almadova, Kitamura, Arakawa or Sixto, all of whom performed well this season.

  150. Don Weir May 18, 2011 7:36 am

Kameron Steinhoff was a great receiver at Punahou. He came into his own in the middle of the season and took a big time hit that cut short his football career in his senior year. The hit came as he came across the middle and went up for the ball. Very few high school receivers would have made that attempt

You can’t coach that type of tenacity and concentration.

It was our good fortune to be able to coach Kameron at Punahou and be able to follow his basketball career at HPU.

The Weir Family’s prayers are with the Steinhoffs at this time.

  151. BG May 18, 2011 7:41 am

Good morning al, Liz, Ralph…go to bed! Hey Liz…gonna get me a slingbox and send it over to my brother’s house where he has cable. Then I can tape whatever UH games I want even when I’m at the game. Shhhhh…he doesn’t know it yet but he lurks here sometimes!

  157. Derek May 18, 2011 8:16 am

The biggest reason why the crowds at UH baseball are bigger is Kolten Wong. He’s a local boy, an All-America candidate, his last year before he goes to the pros. It helps to have some other local guys like Arakawa, Almadova, and Kitamura on the team. Almadova has has a much better season this year. Last year, he had a dreadful year and was shell shocked in College Ball as a freshman. As a Soph, he’s learned a lot and I suspect he will be even better next year. Kitamura can’t hit very well, but he’s very good defensively, plays third base really well. He can also play shortstop and even second base if need be. He’s a very valuable guy and can pitch in at catcher too. Arakawa as a freshman into the starting rotation is terrific. He’s been better than I thought. Having a winning team always gets the attendance up too. I haven’t agreed with Trapasso’s decisions on changing pitchers on many occasions. Losing 4 straight against Cal St.-Fullerton at home hurt, althought all 4 were close games. Not enough hitting and I thought too many strikeouts. I think the guy that is coming on strong at the ending part of the season is Collin Bennett. He’s going to be a big key for Hawaii is going to make a big showing in the WAC tournament and beyond and for next year as well when he’s a senior.

Disappointment of the year so far: Wahine Softball. One year removed from the Women’s College World Series, not even making it to a regional is very, very painful to see. The team couldn’t handle the stress of all that success and wasn’t tough enough. All those home runs last year was in part because of the bats and it seemed Wahine batters were trying to go for the fences. They were billed as the “Sistas of Swat”. They become more like “Sistas of Strikeouts.” Lose 3 games by 1-0 and 4 more by 2-1 just showed that the Wahine batters struggled most of the season. Losing Taualii, Yoshikawa, Grimes, and Puu Warren proved to be huge. Collectively, they were tough and they hit in the clutch. People can still remember and see Yoshikawa hitting a key home run in the regionals, Taualii hitting a grand slam, Puu Warren playing flawlessly in RF and hitting line drives to the right side, and Grimes a rock behind the plate and hitting in key situations. Put it all together and you’ve got a big winner. Period. This 2011 edition could handle the moment of truth. They finished at 37-18 and that’s a very good record on the surface. But they finished 4th in the WAC regular season, and went out early in the tournament. They had the bases loaded so often and many times did not deliver the key blow that would have broken the game open. A lot of time, they struck out. Considering the expectations coming back, Coolen and the Gang whiffed and we are thinking about what it could have been. It’s the old story where some people make it happen, some people wonder what happend, and some people just say what happened!!!! The Wahine were in the latter category. The sad thing is that I love the Wahine team and I feel bad about how they lost.

Ashton Kutcher? Really? EXCELLENT! You guys have made a terrific choice. That’s ONEHALFof the battle. The other half… is creating the new character for HIM correctly….tailoring Kutcher to a role. Certainly he will not work well as a new Charlie Harper… just not a good fit . This is where Chuck Lorre as the boss Supremo will have to make the tough calls. Only he knows how the writers will function best on all eight cylinders going forward. But, Kutcher? Yeah… The Seventies Show and his movie rolls have given him enough experience… no doubt he can pull in Demi Moore and Bru ce Willis occasionally. Big swing… big thunder. As long as the new character fits the actor and the writers… ITS A GO!
