Road Warriors

For this two-game road trip to Washington and UNLV, the Warriors have a 66-player traveling squad.

The breakdown: Four specialists; three quarterbacks, 11 offensive linemen, 13 receivers, three running backs, 11 defensive backs, eight linebackers, and 13 defensive linemen.

Of note: Safety Brian Clay and lineman Blake Muir are on the travel list; offensive guard Chauncy Winchester-Makainai is not.

UH special teams coordinator Dick Tomey apparently is demonstrating tough leadership. He has been coaching the past few weeks despite a broken toe on his left foot.

Gus Tuaniga will be rejoining the UH men’s volleyball team in January.

Former All-State point guard Janelle Nomura of Punahou has transferred from Cal State Northridge and is enrolled at UH. She is eligible to play for the Rainbow Wahine in 2012-13.

Also spotted on campus: Vander Joaquim.

    Happy Birthday Wena & Stephen

Good morning and safe travel to the Warriors, see you in LV.

Caught up reading last nights comments about local recruiting. Normally as many stated, al does tell it like it is and is right on and I agree with.

However, several thoughts occurred to me on previously noted comments above.

    – Local players #263, were they not highly recruited players and we didn’t miss the boat? or are some saying that they were not highly thought of players? I’m happy we got them and would have been better if this list could have additional local names too. Competition bringing out the best play.

-What day did Coach Mac just needed to just drive to see the Jamora and family? Just after the decommit from BYU or how soon before UDub swooped in, or how much later was acceptable for getting his commit by coach visit? Woud the home visit have guaranteed his commitment?

-If UH still doesn’t get it recruiting locally, I’d like to see specifics on exactly how this issue can be improved by the coaches.

Comments made surely indicates that time is an issue for all coaches/teams unless you are a BCS. 1 hour drive is still a 1 hr drive with time to visit.

Not being in a coach shoes, it would be interesting having ST or someone else do a ‘in the life/day or week’ article following the coach or each coach’s work hours.

-If those in the know, know players that want to play for UH but have not been visited by the coaches – why aren’t the coaches being called on to explain their side of the story?

Ok, it’s not in their dna to explain or put down a teenager. What about players being qualifier to UH entrance requirements compared to the other schools – issue or not an issue?

    – Since the visiting recruits are hosted by a player or players, their input to the coaches does carry some weight on recruits ability to ‘fit’ in…..is there some input by players also being made on local recruits by local players already on the team on fitting in?

-How does the HS coaches also affect their players being pointed in a direction other than UH or do they point them towards UH?

I know the consensus great players once their desire to play elsewhere is made, UH is hands-off.

Does this policy help UH with returning walk-ons because of their original decision errors? Think we all know this answer.

-Is UH the only school that looses their great local HS players to another out of state school? We all know this answer don’t we?

Any positive thoughts for continuing improvements?

  34. Buffoman September 7, 2011 6:51 am

Following the victory on Saturday, I would say that to legitimize UH going forward playing with the “Big Boys” and being respected (which seems to be what UH wants) they have to plan and play a near flawless game, win or loose. Barring that, the win over CU would be cheapened.

There is really no room for excuses if the desired outcome is taking the program to the “next level”.

  35. Pomai September 7, 2011 6:51 am

al so if we got jamora who would he replace?

Hope the local Buffaloes had a good time visiting at home last week, talking about Juda Parker, Pauley Asisata, T.K. Tuumalo, Sione Tau, etc. Hope you have a good season. hehe!

Wonder if they are thinking they made the right choice. Looking at the Pac 12, Colorado looks to have a tough time in the conference this year, starting this week at California. The good thing for them is that they are playing at home, but they are underdogs by about 6 1/2 pts. If they win, that bodes well for Hawaii so let’s hope the Buffaloes win this week.

  43. clowns nose September 7, 2011 7:40 am

Leaving on a Wednesday morning, it works. Perfect. . Rid the jet leg, make the transition into Saturday’s game comfortably .

Per last night’s Call the Coach Show the UH band is also accompanying the Warriors to Seattle. The other two times the band made a road trip was to the Holiday and Sugar Bowls according to the one caller (Gwen, who is the band coach (?)).

Coach Mack referred to the band members as Warriors, too, and often speaks to the band before games.During last night’s show coach donated a $1000 to UH’s band.

The team should be extra pumped seeing the UH band in the stands. Add in all the fans from the islands making the trip and transplants, too, attending the game should give the team a big boost.

Should be a great sight to see…the UH band playing Hawaii 5-0 in Huskie Stadium…Warrior fans in the stand all in green. Go Warriors!!!

  58. Hawaiianbod September 7, 2011 9:09 am

pomai – i think you left out someone named Monsta Masch?

  59. markazulu September 7, 2011 9:10 am

“UW sophomore safety Taz Stevenson shook his head at Moniz’s numbers. As a freshman for Mililani High, Stevenson played against Moniz, who went to Leilehua High, in one of Hawaii’s bigger high school rivalry games.

“He scrambled on us and had a big arm and threw deep,” Stevenson said. “I knew he was a good player. But I didn’t know he’d be like that.”

    How good?

“Anybody that plays against him is going to have their hands full,” said Fresno State head coach Pat Hill.

Last season against Fresno, Moniz threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns.

“When he’s in rhythm he throws the ball really well,” Hill said. “We put a lot of pressure on him last year, and he still made a lot of plays with his legs and his arm. If you put the pressure on him, you better get him down and contain him because he can make plays with his feet and arm.”

In last week’s 34-17 win over Colorado, Moniz only threw for 178 yards and a touchdown, but he rushed for a career-high 121 yards and three touchdowns, including a 57-yard run.

“We could have thrown the ball more, but we were getting it on the run, and it’s called the run-and-shoot and we proved it last year,” Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin said. “We wanted to throw the ball and set up the run, but if we can get it on the run, then we will take that too.

“He has the ability and he is faster than he has ever been, so people aren’t going to be able to do what they did in the past.”

Hawaii has added some option plays to utilize Moniz’s legs. But UW coach Steve Sarkisian is more concerned about the scrambles where Moniz leaves the pocket and turns a 6-yard gain into 16-yard gain.

“The bulk of them are when they’re covered well down field and he’s tucking the ball and running,” Sarkisian said. “And he’s been doing it since he started against USC last year, and he keeps doing it, and he did it this week. If it weren’t for the sacks, I think he rushes for almost 150 yards in the game. He’s a real threat.”

Huskies defensive tackle Alameda Ta’amu compared Moniz to former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli.

“He’s big and fast like him,” Ta’amu said.

But while Moniz has become a run threat, the Huskies secondary can’t forget about his ability to throw the football. That’s where he does the most damage.

Moniz is one of just 11 quarterbacks in NCAA history to have thrown for 5,000 yards. Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan is in that exclusive group; he threw for 5,549 yards in 2006.

“He delivers the ball well and he’s very competitive, and the scheme of what they got there are a lot of guys all over the field they are looking to get the football too,” said Idaho coach Robb Akey, who watched Moniz throw for 326 yards and three touchdowns against his Vandals last season.

The run and shoot has been a tradition at Hawaii since June Jones was the coach from 1999-2007. Jones played at Portland State for Mouse Davis, who popularized the offense in the 1970s. Davis coached under Jones at Hawaii, and he is now an assistant of McMackin’s.

“There’s been a lot of quarterbacks that have played in that system that have thrown for a lot of yards, not just at Hawaii, if you follow Mouse around,” Sarkisian said. “It’s a great system to allow quarterbacks to throw for yardage when he’s really in sync with his wide receivers. There’s a lot of route reading, understanding of coverage, and you need to be on the same page.”

The receiving corps was one of the bigger question marks for the Warriors headed into this season. Hawaii lost its top three receivers from last year, including All-American Greg Salas, who caught 119 passes for 1,889 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“Last year, they had a veteran group of wide receivers and he got into that system and played a very fast, mentally fast, brand of football where the ball was out, the anticipation was there and he’s an accurate passer,” Sarkisian said.

Because of how complicated the offense can be, particularly with the receivers adjusting to what the defense gives, the lack of game reps might slow Moniz down.

“Maybe it’s why he pulled the ball down a little bit more last week, I don’t know,” Sarkisian said. “Maybe the sync – they weren’t quite there yet. But they will get there. He’s too good of a quarterback and they are too good of coaches not to get there.”

So what can you do if you are the Huskies defense?

Playing better than they did against Eastern would help. Sarkisian thought there was some tentativeness in the pass rush and the coverage.

“Eastern did a great job of, when we were in zone coverages, finding the soft spots and getting completions on first and second down,” Sarkisian said. “We’ll see quite a bit of that this week.”

Sarkisian wants the secondary to be more “sticky” in the zone coverage – be aggressive and physical and not passive.

“It’s going to be critical for us because they could become very similar if we allow the game to go that way,” he said. “Hopefully, we can get them out of that mode dinking and dunking down the field.”

What other things can they do to beat Moniz and Hawaii?

“Be good in coverage, change things up and give him a lot of different looks helps,” Akey said.

Said Sarkisian: “We are going to have our hands full with him.”

    Go Warriors

Allot of times we become engrossed and yearn for the athletes that got away. Lets not forget and undercut the efforts of those that have made the sacrifice and earned the right to dawn the Green White and Black to represent us all.

I am proud of Manti, Jamora and the many other island athletes that go abroad to play ball. They represent us all with pride.

I am super proud of Corey Paredes, Moniz and the many other athletes that have chosen to stay and play for the home team. I am also proud of Aaron Brown, Bright, Pollard, Edwards and the many athletes from the mainland and abroad that have chosen to come to our shores, embrace our cultural lifestyle and accepted the privilege to be a Warrior for life.

I’m looking at the hand we’ve been dealt and I’m JACKED!!!! I want every opponent on our table to see our eyes and know we’re not bluffing!! I say we go “ALL IN!!”

    BRING ON 2011!!!

Agree with other posters…Our O needs to get in sink for this game…If they do, and we stretch the field, it will open up opportunities….We also need a fast start and keep the pedal to the metal for all four quarters…

If we do that, the D can be more aggressive…especially if we have a lead…and I love an aggressive D…

  76. A-joe September 7, 2011 10:44 am

NYUH- Yup! Let’s help Washington make this game all about the Huskies!

I expect the best from the Huskies! I want NO excuses! Don’t wanna hear “shoulda woulda coulda” or “we beat ourselves” after the game!!! I want them to bring nothing but their “A” game!!

I want each and every Husky to reflect on the countless hours of blood and sweat they sacrificed this offseason to to get to this point!!

I want each and every Husky to reflect on the reasons they’re playing this game: for themselves, their loved ones, for the pride of Washington…

I want each and every Husky believing we have no business being on the same field as them! I want them believing they WILL walk all over us come Saturday.

I want each Husky player motivated with undying confidence in themselves and one another! Ready to go into battle as one; put everything on the line!!

    Why?

    Because,…

When they finally go up against the Warriors I want each and every one of them to witness firsthand-

    all that they sacrificed…

    and believe in….

    .

    .

    .

    …was fricken NOT ENOUGH!!

I want Washington to be like Roy Scheider…

  77. Stretch September 7, 2011 10:50 am

JJ – I hope the O don’t go down the sink.

  78. Da Punchbowl Kid September 7, 2011 10:52 am

A synched up offense will also help.

  79. Da Punchbowl Kid September 7, 2011 11:01 am

To get the offense in synch, it needs game reps. Lets hope the old adage about teams improving the most between game one and game two is true.

In the three practices I saw, Moniz seemed to be in synch with the receivers. But as a former UH player commented, its much easier to look sharp in practice. This week’s game will be very important for many reasons.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  80. kkobi425 September 7, 2011 11:14 am

Win on the road. Seattle radio hosts keep harping on the fact that UH

is only 1 for 7 on the road agaisnt BCS competition.

  81. Laura September 7, 2011 11:16 am

Btw, the Band will be going to Vegas, not Washington, to bad it was not both. Especially, since Washington is the bigger game.

  83. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 11:19 am

    Howzit Tsai-ko Nation!!

I like the earlier references to obedience training. So by their actions, I want the Warriors to say to the Huskies:

    SIT!!

    DOWN!!

    STAY!!

    ROLL OVER!!

    PLAY DEAD!!

    Mwaaahahahaha!!

    GO WARRIORS!

    Belated happy birthday to Stretch!

**Hawaii v. Washington preview by Sports Network**

    – – –

“In 2010 Moniz, who won WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first week, was first in the nation in total offense with 367.3 ypg, but probably no one saw his emergence as a running quarterback coming and that could easily confuse the Huskies as they prepare for this weekend’s affair.”

“With as many as 16 players making their major-college debuts in the opener, it was important for the returning starters for the Huskies to keep it all together, but unfortunately the offense lost an important piece in receiver Jermaine Kearse who sprained his ankle in the first quarter and never returned, his availability against Hawaii left in question.”

“If the Warriors are smart, they’ll let Moniz loose again and let him make plays with his legs since the Washington run defense is still a work in progress. However, Hawaii has to make sure that its quarterback also finds a groove passing the ball in order to find a more balanced attack and keep Moniz from taking unnecessary hits down the field.”

    Result: Hawaii 31 Washington 27

It was nice seeing Darius out there again.

Met Scott Harding’s Dad, and Alex’s Mom & Uncle were at practice. Sat with Sterling Jackson’s Dad. Not a lot of people at practice. MP was there.

  93. Don Weir September 7, 2011 11:43 am

    Tsaiko’s,

Dave Mutter (Center), Bill Leutz (Linebacker) & possibly Jeris White (Cornerback) from the team that recorded the great win over UH in ’72 will be at the game. They are flying in from Chicago to relive the moments and see it happen again.

Murray Cassidy (Safety/Rover) from the late 60’s UH team has over 15 FB Alums who also live in the area coming to the game. Murray is responsible for keeping many of the FB Alums connected over the years.

Look for these former players probably wearing UH Letterwinners baseball caps.

    1. pre-game reception at the Fox Sports Grill (SRO) coordinated with Bobby Curran and Robert Kekaula on the radio like last time *not happening

    2. post game reception for alums and fans like last time *not happening

    3. bulk ticket purchase for FB Alums, Letterwinners, and their families like last time *not happening

These were small events but they were well publicized, well attended, and helped sell game tickets. Many of those from the area chose to purchase their tickets from UW for better seating.

I thought that Jeris White played for UH? And that Holmes team beat the huskies in 1973?

  96. al September 7, 2011 12:21 pm

all’s not well in texas these days.

after the sec accepted unanimously texas a & m, baylor has threatened to file a law suit and has been calling upon all the big texas schools to hop on board.

the baylor headpin is the same guy who initiated the impeachment of bill clinton.

    this will be fun.

  97. al September 7, 2011 12:23 pm

redzone…jeris white is a rainbow alum who graduated from radford hs. who went on to many years with the miami dolphins, tampa bay, and the redskins.

Is Cal State Northridge part of the Big West?

  100. al September 7, 2011 12:28 pm

don’t forget that jeris white’s teammate, cornerback hal stringert from st. louis school also made it to the nfl for five years with the chargers.

they probably were the best db’s in hawaii history that played together as a group.

  101. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 12:33 pm

    Per Wikipedia

1973 – The Rainbows record what is widely considered to be the biggest upset in school history, defeating Washington 10–7 in front of 52,500 in Seattle. The Huskies were favored to beat Hawaiʻi by as many as 50 points.

  104. al September 7, 2011 12:36 pm

don weir…he too played on that 1973 team that upset 50pt favorite university of washington 10-7.

    other notables on that team;

    levi stanley

    dexter gomes

    cliff laboy

    june jones

all of whom had pro looks.

  105. Ralph September 7, 2011 12:37 pm

MIH Northridge is a Big West team, but we don’t play them this season

  106. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 12:37 pm

    al,

So, who on our team this year might also get pro looks? Do we compare favorably?

  107. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 12:38 pm

I’m surprised that Janelle Nomura got a release, then… that is if she did, since she’s sitting out this year anyway.

  108. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 7, 2011 12:38 pm

Apparently Baylor has dropped the legal action threats.

    Texas aTm good to go!

  109. warrior Dave September 7, 2011 12:40 pm

Happy Birthday and Anniversary ST and Wena!

  110. Ralph September 7, 2011 12:41 pm

Janelle came to Hawaii last season with Northridge and she wasn’t a starter. Alama I believe played a lot more for the Matadors.

  111. A-House September 7, 2011 12:42 pm

I remember Jeris White’s first game as a true freshman and he got burnt early in the game.

However, since then very few, if any, teams threw the ball in his direction. Jeris always got the job of covering the best WR on the other team. He was truly a joy to watch!

His compadre, Stringert, was no slouch – he also played well!

If I had to choose my most favorite UH football player, it would be Jeris White.

  112. Ralph September 7, 2011 12:43 pm

I don’t think girls have to sit out a year when transferring to another conference.

  113. jm2375 September 7, 2011 12:43 pm

    Yesss! Welcome back, Gus!!

    Welcome home, Janelle Nomura!

  114. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 12:43 pm

    Ralph,

Hopefully that will translate to greater dedication to getting better so that she can show Northridge what they missed out on, eh?

  115. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 12:44 pm

BTW… whose behind did Tomey have to kick to end up with that toe?

  116. d1shima September 7, 2011 12:46 pm

    “I’ll have mine raw” Stringert.

  117. d1shima September 7, 2011 12:47 pm

Maybe the injury was caused by overuse! 😯

  118. Ralph September 7, 2011 12:47 pm

  119. A-House September 7, 2011 12:47 pm

First, a most happy birfday to Wena and her other half!

Second, welcome back to Gus and Janelle – best place to be is Hawaii!!!

Third, get well wishes to Coach Tomey.

  122. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 12:52 pm

    Ralph.

She’s enrolled at UH.. read the blog updates above… It would be great if she can play as tenaciously as BJ did… BJ was a joy to behold. She made all the rest of the players better just from her untiring dedication and her 100 free throws a day after practice mindset…

O Dee is baaaaack! After an impressive win last weekend, I’m gonna give ya’ll yet another chance to cash and carry. My 10* knockout punch for the Hawaii Warriors vs Washington Huskies game is already in the bag: Hawaii Warriors has this game hands down. Think I’m full of bullsh@t? Well you won’t be thinkin that way on Monday morning when you, the dumb fool took the Washington Huskies in what is probably the darn stupidest bet I ever seen. Look at the numbers but also consider the sportsbook’s lines. The better team is the equal records, but that don’t mean a thing to me. Go with Hawaii Warriors and buy some more bling for your girl or guy, no homo 🙂 .

I am proud of … the many other island athletes that go abroad to play ball. They represent us all with pride.

I disagree (sorry A-JOE). If they want to represent Hawaii, they would be at UH.

I agree with A-JOE that I am super proud of the players that have chosen to stay and play for the home team.

  152. bigislandkurt September 7, 2011 2:03 pm

WE gotta make like Boise did to Georgia — go into their opponent’s den and beat them like a rug. Contrary to what the score indicated, Boise thoroughly dominated the bulldogs. We need to capture that same kind of mid-season swag no matter where we go. Our team is capable of being THAT good.

    BIK

  156. bigislandkurt September 7, 2011 2:10 pm

Al….I watched it too, and loved it. Georgia fans really believed that they were going to contend for the national championship this year. This week, they are all complaining that “Boise don’t play nobody” and when they do, they have the whole off season to prepare for the one big name they play at the start of the season. I was like, Ok. But didn’t Georgia also have the entire off season to prepare for Boise?

    BIK

Pet peeve about Aloha Stadium – PA system sucks. No can understand anything up in da yellow sections. Even the band sounds soft. Any chance it’ll be upgraded sometime in my lifetime?

  165. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 2:52 pm

Here’s the link to send ESPN an email about programming.

    http://espn.go.com/espn3/feedback?.

We have had a lot of success emailing them about adding UH games to espn3 in the past. I already shot them an email about adding the UH – Washington game.

  166. Kevin September 7, 2011 2:53 pm

These listed player heights are driving me nuts….

  167. Kevin September 7, 2011 2:59 pm

    JM,

    1) The PA system ALWAYS SUCKED and lately it’s seems like it’s getting worse. That’s why for anyone performing live with a song on that system should RECONSIDER cause it will only make them look bad.

    2) The UH marching band consists of anywhere between 250-275 standing students. These bigger schools have 320+. What doesn’t help is that they are next to a big open gap in the North End zone.

The band can be loud, when spread out. Was visiting the press booth and the entire band was facing that direction on the field and they were loud and clear.

For the entrance when they play Hawaii Five O, the crowd noise and the fact that they are facing one direction and tucked to a corner of the field doesn’t help the entire stadium hear “Five O” being played.

But in a lot of the stadiums the marching band can’t be heard playing the team out anyway due to the noise. Seems like it sounds cool on TV… because well… we’re watching it on TV and there are TV mics.

  168. wafan September 7, 2011 3:02 pm

    Good afternoon!

  169. jm2375 September 7, 2011 3:04 pm

  170. wafan September 7, 2011 3:04 pm

Dang, it sure is hot! It will be hot on Saturday, too. Bring sun screen, hat, sun glasses, and lots of water.

Hoping the Huskies do a lot of panting in the 2nd half as the Warriors wear them down!

    Go Warriors!

  171. wafan September 7, 2011 3:07 pm

Maybe the sound might improve if the stands were filled — kills echos.

But, there is a problem with the sound system and folks. Sounds terrible and they play those commercials ridiculously loud while the band is trying to pump up the crowd. Kind of like Vili and his silly schtick.

  172. madeinhawaii September 7, 2011 3:08 pm

Okay I found this link… don’t know if it will really work.. but bookmark it just in case…

  173. Kepola September 7, 2011 3:12 pm

For Steve Jackson, and anyone else who’s looking for a way to watch the Warriors-Huskies game online: In the past, I’ve found free streams of UH games on justin.tv and veetle.com. There are already threads on this topic on the scout.com (Warrior Sports Network) and sportshawaii.com message boards (links at uhfootball.blogspot.com, on the right side), but right now it’s all just hope and speculation. If I find a reliable stream on Saturday I will post the URL here. P.S. Aloha, Mr. Jackson ~ We’re looking forward to seeing lots more of Sterling Jackson in future games!

  174. Slugger September 7, 2011 3:16 pm

jm2375, the sound in my section of yellow is fixed…I should say the speaker is fixed…

Don Weir, good to see you back on the blog.

Derrick Inouchi told me that Oceanic was going to stream the game. True, or not true???

I remember reading something in the PPV letter that said they (Oceanic) didn’t have the rights to broadcast the UNLV game yet. Steve Jackson is going to be at the UNLV game; Sterling’s Mom will be at the WA game.

The Aussies will be at the WA & LV games!

  175. Slugger September 7, 2011 3:18 pm

    Kepola,

Thanks for the info. The Jacksons want to get things setup now before the weekend for the rest of the family to watch the game.

  176. NYUH September 7, 2011 3:19 pm

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/schedule

    no sightings on espn.

Hoping that two world class CFB programs can get some video streaming.

BTW, is Time-Warner offering HDTV this year?

  177. d1shima September 7, 2011 3:23 pm

Concur with Slugger that Oceanic does have this Saturday’s game on the PPV list; nothing set for UNLV game yet….leave me your phone #, I’ll call you with the score from Sam Boyd Stadium.

  178. d1shima September 7, 2011 3:25 pm

Also concur wit wafan, PNW (Koakane, it’s not PWN)to be broiling this weekend including the Yamhill Valley in OR. Forecast for a high of 94 when the Wildcats kick-off! 😯

  179. Haleakala September 7, 2011 3:30 pm

The breakup of the Big 12 is creating a stir in other conferences including the Mountain West. The Mountain West Conference is exploring the possibility of inviting the Big 12 “left over” teams which will not get invited to join the other BCS conferences as it gets broken up with the departures of Colorado, Nebraska, Texas Tech, and possibly Texas and Oklahoma in the near future. It is speculated that Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri may get invitations to other conferences including the Big East or even the SEC. Thus Baylor (which had a big win over TCU this past Saturday), and Iowa State may be left by holding the bag in the collapse of the Big 12.

Instead of inviting Baylor and Iowa State to the Mountain West, maybe the MW teams could move over the other way and fill up the open slots in the Big 12 so they could share in the much larger TV contract! Just dreaming.

  180. Kevin September 7, 2011 3:32 pm

    Wafan,

Actually a full stadium will absorb noise. Empty stadiums make it louder.

When we are at the arena for Wahine bball, there are like 700-1000 people there and it’s loud as hell sometimes. They do NOT adjust the volume.

But for a mens’ bball crowd or wahine volleyball crowd, even at their quietest there is a remarkable difference.

  181. LizKauai September 7, 2011 3:34 pm

Yup… all the good streamers are shut down as far as I know. Most of the blog links are spam.

Hopefully the local station will stream to someone on the net.

  182. Kevin September 7, 2011 3:34 pm

But kudos to whatever it is they did at the arena, because with the SAME speakers, the sound is much better.

  183. wafan September 7, 2011 3:34 pm

    Kevin . . .

Agreed, like I said, full stands kill echos.

Wonder why they do not adjust the volue. Maybe just another broken thing?

  184. Slugger September 7, 2011 3:38 pm

    Just called Oceanic:

The game streaming on the internet is available for the HOME games through UH’s site. The customer rep. pointed me to:

    uhstreaming.oceanic.com

If you are on-island, you NEED a Road Runner modem to use this service. About $12 for the FB game. The UH-Rice WVB game is the next game available for $6.28.

If you are on the mainland, you don’t need any special equipment.

The away games are only available on TV through Oceanic PPV. No online streaming.

Suggestion: Go to the individual university websites to see if they are providing internet streaming of their games.

If I recall correctly, the rep. told me that the UNLV game will be on PPV now.

  185. Kepola September 7, 2011 3:39 pm

    Thanks, Slugger.

According to a thread on sportshawaii.com, Saturday’s game is listed on DirecTV channels #683 and 687, but someone cautioned that those advance listings aren’t always 100% reliable.

Apparently some other cable networks might carry ROOT Sports (UW’s broadcaster for this game). It’s http://www.rootsports.com, but they don’t seem to have a PPV option for live-streaming video.

    The quest goes on!

  186. A-joe September 7, 2011 3:40 pm

    133: Tommui-

Aaaaaw shucks! I’m sorry you feel that way, Tom. I can only hope that someday you would support anyone from Hawaii who goes abroad to chase their dreams. Even if that dream originates somewhere else.

Perhaps someday you might support and take pride in a local braddah from Kona who studied and trained abroad to become the first Asian American to go into space. Or a goofy looking kid from Manoa who went abroad to study and work his way to becoming Commander and Chief of greatest nation on earth.

  187. Kevin September 7, 2011 3:41 pm

BTW, the people at the Les need MORE volume. They got new speakers in there and the thing was pretty soft last season.

    WTF?????

Don’t even get me started with the RWSS, because we went almost 3/4 of the 2011 season with the people sitting on the 3rd base side practically cut off from ANY audio at all!!!!!!!!!!!

Should be fixed anyway, but still THAT SUCKED.

  188. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 7, 2011 3:42 pm

The problem with “where, what, how we going to be able to see the Warriors play” is good practice for next year when we enter the MWC and the theMtnNetwork.

I need to see you next Thursday for my order for Nov.

  191. Haleakala September 7, 2011 3:49 pm

Correction to my prior post regarding the breakup of the Big 12. Its Texas A&M that is leaving, and possibly Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State may be invited to join the Pac 12 to make it the Pac 16. There will be ripple effects to other conferences and teams. The Mountain West will need to protect itself and to also see if there are opportunities to make the conference even more attractive than it is.

  192. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 7, 2011 3:52 pm

    #192,

If OU/OSU/UT/TT leave and assuming Missouri leave to the SEC lets hope other MWC members aren’t fooled to believe going to the B12 will be good for them.

MWC is going to be stronger.

Baylor and Iowa St. don’t add to much in terms of anything, but they would be welcomed by MWC I think.

  193. Kevin September 7, 2011 3:52 pm

  214. d1shima September 7, 2011 5:12 pm

Former NaMASU HC Hal Mumme landed at D3 McMurry U. in TX and scheduled his debut against FBS Stephen F Austin. Predictable results (6-82 loss) but check out his reasoning for going for it on 4th down on their first 4 possessions.

With nothing to lose except a football game, McMurry went for broke from the start, going for it and failing on fourth down on its first four possessions. Three of those were in McMurry territory, including a fourth-and-8 from the 28. The Lumberjacks took advantage with a field goal and two touchdowns to take control before the game was eight minutes old.

“If I’d punted it, I didn’t think our defense could slow them down,” Mumme said. “Nothing against our defense, but we had to make big plays and get them off the field in three plays if we were going to stop them. It’s easier to do that when they’re in the Red Zone than when they’re back 80 yards away. They’re just like us — they throw it down the field real well.”

A little reverse psychology on those 4-wide offense detractors? 😯

    Lots of discussion about recruiting.

Nick Saban’s method is being followed by nearly all of the present HC’s who worked under him.

Call it the Nick Saban doctrine of recruiting. It is meticulous, methodical and relentless in every single aspect of the recruiting process.

“Saban’s model is based on what I would call a series of critical factors,” said ESPN’s national director of football recruiting, Tom Luginbill. “Those factors are some traits like athletic ability and a player’s personality. They measure their conduct [off the field] as well. It’s a whole set of parameters position by position when they recruit. It’s very similar to the [Bill] Belichick mold of fitting guys into spots or positions that work best for them.”

    208: MIH-

Even still, when our island sons and daughters go abroad, whether if it’s for academics or athletics, they will always be referred to being from Hawai’i. They will always carry that moniker and represent us. Whether if we like it or not.

D1Shima’s son went off to play ball in Oregon. Bulla’s son made a tough gut wrenching decision to return to Utah to chase his dream. My nephew went off and played ball at Tennessee. Do I dislike them for not staying and trying to play for Hawai’i? Absolutely not! Their uniforms might not be Manoa Green but underneath it, their hearts bleed Hawai’i. They’ve gone off and shown others elsewhere island boys can play some serious ball! I’m proud of them all.

Realistically, there’s simply not enough openings to keep every local talent in the islands. Even if they were, it’s not a guarantee they’d wanna stay either.

    So, my outlook is this-

If our local athletes can go to the mainland and play for USC, start for Notre Dame, or wreak havoc at Tennessee, it speaks volumes of the talent our islands can pump out! I love it! I’m proud of each and every one of them. They’re ambassadors of Hawaii. Regardless of the colors they wear on Saturdays. Inside, they’re still our sons and daughters of Hawai’i; representing us all. And I’m proud of each and every one of them.

Now, if they were to play against Hawai’i……. I expect each and every one of them to represent and bring their best game! Because on gameday Hawai’i will show them no mercy! They should expect nothing less.

Whatever side of the line they’re on, play like Island Warriors! Represent with Pride!!

  225. A-House September 7, 2011 6:28 pm

    A-Joe:

In the past and I’m sure in the future, there will be “local” student athletes who will “bad mouth” UH, be it coaches or whatever, and it will be printed.

There have been several who were really nasty; including their parents. Those I have no “hawaiian feeling” for. There were several from St Louis – sorry d1. As a family member says, ‘they can kiss my butt”!

Those who chose to go away, but not burn their bridge back home will be more than welcomed as we have seen so many times and will continue to see in the future. Of course, most recent is Janelle Nomura. As one BCS coach said about 2 years ago, if all the top 15 football prospects from Hawaii played for UH, UH would be in the top 15 teams every year.

I was commenting on your #60.

And I feel the same – if the athlete playing for a Mainland team says “I’m playing for Hawaii” – I would say that he doesn’t seem to realize he is wearing the wrong uniform.

There are many athletes from Hawaii that do play on the Mainland and more power to them. They are (usually) proud to be from Hawaii. But they are not playing for Hawaii.

Incidentally, I have no quarrel with people going to the Harvards, MITs etc – at least they don’t claim to be “studying for Hawaii”. 🙂

Why should the reason that anyone goes away to school matter? The important thing is that they are continuing their education. If they happen to play football or any other sport too, so what?

What about the kids that UH never recruited yet do have the talent to play at Division I? What about all the kids who go away to play for Division II or Division III schools? There’s no place for them to play here. They can’t say they play for Hawaii or represent Hawaii?

We all know Hawaii doesn’t have the top notch facilities. But, you know what, Hawaii makes due with what they have and are very successful compared to the other BCS schools out there.

    SORT OF OFF-SPORTS TOPIC:

One last hike up Makapu`u Trail to see the full moon rise out of the ocean above/next to Moloka`i on a weekend until late next spring when there’s no UH sporting event competing for our attention. NOTE: The hike itself is a somewhat sports activity.

    SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

Meet at the entrance to the trail at 5:15 pm

    MOONRISE – 6:12 pm

Please bring something to share about September 11, 2001 – flowers, a toast, a recollection, a reflection.

We’ll head back on down about 6:30. However, the main parking lot now closes at 6:45 pm so either park on the highway or in the little off-road lot about 50 yards waimanalo-side of the main lot just in case we don’t get back down in 15 minutes.

Afterwards, we’ll head on over to Hawaii Kai for dinner. If UH wins on Saturday, then be prepared for a big celebration. Will share the outcome of my bet.

Let me know if you are going to join us by e-mailing swood at hoku dot com by 12 noon on Sunday.

If you are interested in getting the audio system at Aloha Stadium fixed or replaced, then you need to call in your complaint – or send a letter signed with your (real) name & contact info – to Scott Chan; the Stadium manager; Kevin Chong Kee, the Stadium Authority chair; Bruce Coppa, the head of the Department of Accounting & General Services which oversees the entire facility; State Senator Carol Fukunaga and Representative Tom Brower, chairs of the legislative committees which initiate funding for Aloha Stadium; and, if you’re a Hawai`i resident, your own state senator and representative.

Contacting just a couple of people doesn’t do it – you gotta bring everybody onto the team.

It seems to me that the cost to upgrade the system would be significantly cheaper than the cost of the new turf plus it could be marketed as a way of generating empoyment opporunties for people here in Hawai`i.

Anybody watching the ESPN special on SMU right now?

Their President is VERY aggressive in pitching the SMU program to a BCS AQ-Status Conference within the next 5 years.

He has also stated that they are willing to do a merger with the MWC and CUSA if AQ status could be attained. However the numbers don’t seem to be there.

**MWC and BIG 12 Merger Article**

Interesting article from a Texas Tech point of view about conference realignment.

Basically the assumption leaves 5 schools (TTech, Kansas, K-State, Iowa St., Baylor) leftover from the B12 meltdown. MWC-10 + 5 = 15 schools + 1 school from CUSA/WAC/BYU?

It’s a *HUGE* assumption that some of these 5 don’t get invited to the Big LEast or some other AQ conference and that Texas goes Indy. Texas going Indy would be great for the MWC IMO. TTech would be homeless and PAC12 ain’t taking TTech by itself.

If we MUST go to 16, this would be the best schools to do it with and would give MWC a better than good basketball conference. Maybe Hawaii gets asked to go All-In with Olympic sports or Texas goes Indy and puts Olympic into these MWC/BIG-16.

    _ _ _ _ _ _

“The question that no one seems to be asking is what happens to the other 52 FBS schools (not including the 4 independents)? Does anyone think that those schools left out of one of the projected super conferences are going to take this lying down? If you think that the legal mess A&M has stirred up with between the Big XII schools and the SEC is ugly, wait for the law suits that will be filed if 52 former potentially contending schools get shut out.”

“That’s right. If things start to implode, I could see a merger between the remnants of the Big 12 and the MWC. Bringing in Boise State and Air Force would not be a bad thing. Texas will do as Texas pleases and may end up independent. That is fine by me. I would take a 14 team combo of the MWC and former Big 12. It would be sure to be an automatic qualifying conference, the MWC already has its own network, and the combination would give room for a new round of TV negotiations. It leaves a lot in the air, but would create a conference with enough power programs to be relevant and a good stage for Tech.”
