Former UH coach/player Tony Tuioti is in his second day as the assistant to the defensive line coach with the Cleveland Browns.

Mike Pettine, the Browns’ new head coach, conducted a coaches’ seminar at UH in 2009. It is there when he met Tuioti.

Hmm. Former UH cornerback Mike Edwards was recruited by Tuioti and is currently training in Ohio …

They actually do it at a fast pace. But, yeah, the linemen are quite nimble this year.

  12. jeezy33 February 4, 2014 9:48 am

    11. Has Friel lost weight? he looks a little better in the pic then last season.

  28. Truman February 4, 2014 11:10 am

#15, tommui-you should still be able to text by using the letters that are on the phone keypad. If you have no text plan, you will probably be charged on a per text message basis.

  29. Lowtone123 February 4, 2014 11:11 am

#24-Isn’t it funny in this day and age those LOI are still sent via fax machine.

  30. Bryson February 4, 2014 11:13 am

Load the paper, check the in and make sure the electric and telephone paid…and it help if some players committed to other schools accidently faxed their LOI to an 808 area code…lol

  31. Pu'uwai February 4, 2014 11:19 am

Congrats to TT on his new coaching career. Good luck my brother.

    Imua Rainbow Warriors!!!

  32. st. anthony trojan February 4, 2014 11:19 am

being that 808 is a few hours back say then florida.. do the coaches sleep “in” there at the office? n what time will mr. huncho tsai get there tomorrow??

  33. Whats up February 4, 2014 11:22 am

    #21 and #24 and #26

I agree with all of you. Chow and staff better test everything for tomorrow’s LOI day like da fax machine with toner and paper too, computer, Ipad, Iphone, Android phone, Android tablet. Make sure the UH football offices electric/telephone/cell phone bills has been paid and make sure to have plenty of Kona Coffee brewing.

  34. sofaking_blk February 4, 2014 11:47 am

Edwards should’ve came back and played for UH last year. He wasted a whole year of football, at least he would’ve been playing.

  35. Marleysdad February 4, 2014 11:52 am

    26/29, you’d think they could just scan & email…….

The 80’s called, they want their facsimile machine back.

College Recruiting just like the NFL draft is hit or miss! This is from Staradvertiser via Associated Press.

    http://collegefootball.ap.org/staradvertiser/article/5-things-know-college-football-signing-day

PERSPECTIVE: Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was a two-star recruit, according to Rivals, when he signed with North Carolina State in 2007. The top-rated QB in that class was Jimmy Clausen. This is not an exact science.

    —————————————————————————————-

I think sending the LOI by FAX, or any document, makes that document a “legal document”.

Can some lawyer(s), or anyone knowledgeable, explain this? Or, put it in the right context.

    tanks, eh.

  39. BigWave96744 February 4, 2014 11:56 am

  44. PurpleMaple February 4, 2014 12:26 pm

Faxes are considered legal binding documents.

  45. boolakanaka February 4, 2014 12:36 pm

45-To a degree they are–WHILE it may well be true that a contract entered into by fax is legally binding, a fax itself is still not considered a legal document. One of the necessary criteria is that it includes an exchange of personalised ‘answerbacks’ at the beginning and end of the message which is considered proof of transmission and receipt of the complete message by the two parties identified by these ‘answerbacks.’ Faxes do not always carry such identification of both transmitting and receiving fax numbers, and fax transmission slips are not considered proof that the message has been received complete and legible.

Then again, place any two lawyers in a room, and aruging becomes sport….

  46. A-House February 4, 2014 12:46 pm

me tinks Chow neva hav confidence in Tony T ass y he made a grad assistant his D-line coach and put Tony as the LB coach – me tinks beeg mistake

but, that’s Ok as Tony now coaching in the NFL and hoping will make his way back to UH as a DC someday.

likewise, eye no mo confidence in one HC, but will back the players!

  47. A-House February 4, 2014 12:51 pm

is it a new practice at UH where a donor gives a 4-figure check and gets a template-type thank you note signed by UHAD and the Chancellor

but nothing, not even a phone call from the coach to thank the donor!

my friend is pissed – don’t think he will donate again to UHAD.

  48. otto February 4, 2014 12:57 pm

i got card(s) signed by softball coach and basketball coach, but always a lot later than the donation receipt which i get via email.

  49. kifi February 4, 2014 1:00 pm

Was trying to count the number of athletes that played for Cal Lee at St. Louis who went on to play in the NFL. I ran out out of fingers and hands.

  50. Boolakanaka February 4, 2014 1:02 pm

I have given and asked for a few dollars over the years– and nothing replaces a personal touch and communication–nothing.

  51. st. anthony trojan February 4, 2014 1:16 pm

well really cant blame the coaches..if he/she..does get the “message” if kala was donated..
and by whom etc.. if done correctly.. should be a secretary… getting card addressed etc.. with a sticky note denoting how much was donated.. n placed in the coaches in box..for him/her to sign…
n the mailing etc.. be done by staff..if me was AD AT NE SCHOOL that is how it would be done…regardless of the amount given..or serviced rendered…for me..donors who give..or give services… are my “customers” number one priority for CRM…..me got a card from JJ one time a few years back…. IMUA….lets get that fax machine going full blast tomorrow…

  52. Rite80 February 4, 2014 1:28 pm

There are exceptions to every rule, but in general the best players have the most recruiting stars. Exceptions don’t make the rule.

  53. PONO February 4, 2014 1:29 pm

UH should join the tech revolution and use Echosign. They can have their recruits sign instantly on a tablet and have the document in hand a few seconds later. The government uses it so it must by secure.

  54. PONO February 4, 2014 1:31 pm

Boo is right. If BJ picked up the phone and called one donor a day he could make an impact. That guy would tell 5 of his UH friends “guess who I talked to today”. Word would spread all over the islands that BJ really does care about the customers.

  55. jeezy33 February 4, 2014 1:36 pm

    53. I would say if you’re a top 250 ranked player, you’re pretty damn good… when trying to figure out the 1,2,3 star kids, it’s hit or miss. More times than not, the 1,2,3 star QBs turn out better than the 4 and 5 star guys.

Bridgewater, Hundley, Taylor Graham- 4 stars
Manziel, Mariota, Derek Carr Bortles, Petty – 3 stars
    Fales Lynch, Keeton- 2 stars

  56. al February 4, 2014 1:41 pm

39…you’re missing one from the midwest.

  57. st. anthony trojan February 4, 2014 1:43 pm

“Some people wonder all their lives if they’ve made a difference. The Marines don’t have that problem.”

    ― Ronald Reagan

seems like cal lee does not have this problem ……the man has made a difference in so very many lives over the years…guess n hopefully so he will start all over again…maybe the “recruits” that were going to kaiser.. MAY be going else where…competition is good….IMUA

  58. Boolakanaka February 4, 2014 1:52 pm

55 The power of your voice is profound. It is the very reason that they require elected officials to make personal calls. It takes a little time, but is your single biggest asset–it shows you care and the relationship is meaningful .

  59. PONO February 4, 2014 1:57 pm

    59. Sounds like BJ would benefit from a talk with you. My CEO still walks the halls and talks to regular workers despite having over 10K of them. Those conversations do matter.

  60. Marleysdad February 4, 2014 1:59 pm

58, I think you mean Punahaou, not Kaiser.

  61. Marleysdad February 4, 2014 2:01 pm

    *Punahou

  62. st. anthony trojan February 4, 2014 2:10 pm

not so # 58….many in here alluded to.. that many players there at kaiser
were “recruited” …not know if true or not…maybe sum on here can chirp in…
    and give sum insight…???

  63. al February 4, 2014 2:17 pm

i think bj just needs to learn how to do business local style.

  64. Marleysdad February 4, 2014 2:19 pm

Many of the top high schools have “transfers”. But none can recruit like the ILH, just look at Punahou, they have the Punahou Inn for parents. Kaiser does not have an apartment complex for recruited athletes.

  65. st. anthony trojan February 4, 2014 2:35 pm

    # 65… me cant answer you on that one… but am sure sumone or two will answer or reply ur statement there..did not know they had a inn there…wow..is cool..

  66. cocobean February 4, 2014 2:53 pm

#65. What is the Punahou Inn? Never heard of it, can yuou explain what it is.

  67. jimmy the lock February 4, 2014 2:54 pm

Nothing like a fast track approval for geographic exceptions.

  68. st. anthony trojan February 4, 2014 3:02 pm

may i ask… should maybe kaiser have a inn ?
    poor st.louis…daimen n iolani..no inn..
kamehameha must have up there huh ?

  69. kapakahi February 4, 2014 3:03 pm

  70. boolakanaka February 4, 2014 3:25 pm

50–Kifi interesting observation, and this is not a Cal Lee specific list, but here is who I have from the boys of Kalaepohaku:

    St. Louis (8)
    Olin Kreutz
    Dominic Raiola
    Gary Campbell
    Tyson Alualu
    Jason Gesser
    Harold Stringert
    Chris Fuamatu-Maafala
    Brian Cab

    Kahuku (13)
    Lakei Heimuli
    Aaron Francisco
    Toniu Fonoti
    Itula Mili
    Faaesea Mailo
    Tevita Ofahengaue
    Al Afalava
    Leonard Peters
    Tim Manoa
    Maake Kemoeatu
    Chris Kemoeatu
    Tala Esera
    Chris Naeole

But, my list, maybe also including some guys that made the regular season roster via IR. Clarify and correct for me gents.

  71. ai-eee-soos February 4, 2014 3:27 pm

… Wow … Hawaii high school football news goes “national” … this was in a national coaches search site

Hawaii: Former defensive coordinator / linebackers coach Cal Lee will return to St. Louis HS (HI) for his second stint as head coach, according to Hawaii News Now. Lee previously won 241 games and 14 Prep Bowl titles at St. Louis and was also a two time national coach of the year at the high school

  72. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2014 3:46 pm

Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…still wet and soggy…

Good news on Coach Tony…now he is in a position he should have been in the first place…but better that he is in the NFL…

    #15 tommui…LOL me too…for me communication is a four letter word…talk…not text..had my carrier block the text function…so want to communicate?….we’ll talk…lol!

  73. Marleysdad February 4, 2014 3:52 pm

Punahou owns an apartment complex across the street for parents & students that would otherwise not be able to commute daily. It’s quite the recruiting tool. I’m surprised it’s not more well known, maybe that’s the intent.

  74. tommui February 4, 2014 4:11 pm

#73 -NorthShoreFan: GOOD MORNING HAWAII! Let me see:
Press 4. then 6 – but the “o” is the third in, so I have to press 6 three times to get to “0”, 0h good, “d” is just press 6. the # for space etc etc etc

Easier to just just the computer keyboard and type.

Oh, you got the fancy phone with the keyboard? But I have fat fingers and it still takes more time than using a keyboard on a computer!

And, again being pake, who wants to pay Sprint, Verizon etc the extra charge?

  75. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2014 6:05 pm

tommui…my nephew and niece laff at my phone….that I just got a year ago….flip and answer…dial number to make call….yup stone age stuff but..it works…lol

  76. Truman February 4, 2014 6:27 pm

NorthShoreFan, you sound like an older person (not making fun) as I am in that group. Just wanted to know if you were born and raised on North Shore?

  77. Mokihana February 4, 2014 6:57 pm

Is the Punahou Inn for all students or just football players?

  78. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2014 7:05 pm

    #76..yup

  79. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2014 7:06 pm

  81. Truman February 4, 2014 7:15 pm

NSF, what part of North Shore? I grew up in Haleiwa.

  82. ai-eee-soos February 4, 2014 7:33 pm

Cal: Cal has officially announced Greg Burns has accepted the defensive backs job. Burns coached the defensive backs at UMass in 2013.

… that leaves out the former Longhorn DB coach.

  83. boolakanaka February 4, 2014 7:39 pm

83—It’s rather puzzling. He is the top college DB coach in the nation, many would say, so perhaps an NFL stint, another program in the wings, or perhaps its time to take some time-off, although I personally know that he really loves coaching.

  84. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2014 7:43 pm

Waialua…actually not supposed to have …Haleiwa…the court house over there says…Waialua..

  85. 3-Prong February 4, 2014 7:49 pm

Wow this Punahou Inn thing seems over the top. Is this legal?

  86. el burro sabio February 4, 2014 7:55 pm

Coach should leave milk and cookies by the fax machine and maybe he’ll find some unexpected presents in the morning.

  87. al February 4, 2014 7:58 pm

83…that’s a good thing. some folks say that one of our db/wr recruits was visiting with a buddy at umass.

  88. kaimiloa February 4, 2014 8:13 pm

81… I was wondering about fans tweeting prospects. I heard that former students or student athletes of a school weren’t allowed to contact recruits at all. I don’t know if that’s true but I see fans of a number of schools tweeting with some of our prospects.

  89. Mokihana February 4, 2014 8:36 pm

    #86 Whatever. Money talks.

  90. 3-Prong February 4, 2014 9:13 pm

90: It sure does. Loud and clear! I don’t blame the families for taking this “financial aid” benefit. What an opportunity….. $20k tuition + $20k rent?!

  91. Truman February 4, 2014 9:19 pm

NSF, did you grow up around the courthouse area? That is exactly the area that I grew up in and to let you know how old I am, that old courthouse contained the Haleiwa post office when I grew up and the Malama Market used to be called Kit’s Supermarket (before Fujioka’s). Kit’s wasn’t even built when I was young. And of course, the post office is closer to the extinct theatre.

  92. Mokihana February 4, 2014 9:56 pm

91 Will all become moot. Cal Lee is back.

  93. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2014 10:01 pm

I was there catching the mochi and coins they used to put in it. They went on the top of the roof and threw the mochi to the people who came for the grand opening. Part of a good luck thing they did.

  94. NorthShoreFan February 4, 2014 10:04 pm

also..Fujimura Store…best shave ice around…Matsumoto’s could even come close..

  96. Truman February 4, 2014 11:01 pm

NSF, whew you’re old too. lol. Story that I heard is Matsumoto took the Fujimura recipe for the syrups. Don’t want to ask for your name on this blog but feel free to email me at kkawa50@gmail.com.
