Rekindling the Blaze

By some players, he is jokingly referred to as “Blake Soares” because of what they perceive as his resemblance to UH linebacker Blaze Soares.
But Josh Andrews has his own impressive credentials. The 2007 Mililani High graduate was an All-State player in 2006. In 2005, he was the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Andrews has been working out with UH players four times a week. He hopes to join the Warriors as a non-scholarship player.
“He’s awesome,” said UH long-snapper Jake Ingram, also a Mililani High alumnus.
Andrews, who attended a Division II school last year, already is off to a good start. He trains under Harold “Fudge” Fajardo, the legendary Mililani strength coach.

The word — OK, the picture — is out. I’m a lousy photographer. Offensive left tackle Ray Hisatake decided to help me, posing in this artsy way. That’s Clarence “Lafu” Tuioti-Mariner flashing the “Westside” sign.

Tui‘atua Tuiasosopo, an All-State guard from Saint Louis School, has been working out regularly with the other UH offensive linemen. Tuiasosopo, who signed with UH in February, is on the training-camp roster:

Sometimes being a walk-on has its privileges. For instance, a football scholarship can’t cover the full cost of a room in the new dorm. But walk-on receiver Jett Jasper has signed up for a room, thanks to the financial backing of his parents. What’s more, his room, which becomes available next month, faces the ocean.

jett.JPG

Jasper, who will be a second-year freshman this fall, has served as host to the newcomers. He has taken the new quarterbacks to his secret snorkeling spots. Jasper said he had to find a really long board for 6-foot-5 Greg Alexander to use for a surf excursion.

The offseason is one of the best times. The players are more relaxed, and their fun sides are revealed. Safety Spencer Smith demonstrated one of his talents to the gallery, which included Ronnie and Rob25.

If you’re on the Windward side today, stop by Champs in Windward Mall. They have replicas of Colt Brennan’s Washington Redskin jerseys available. It’s $80 each, and XL is the only current size available . But it’s the burgundy jersey, so it looks pretty nice.

It was really funny tonight that our group was making the most noise in the whole alley. Everyone would know if someone made either a strike or spare. The worst thing about it is that we were the “old futs” and the young kids must have been wondering who these crazy people were. I think that’s why they placed us at the end, so we wouldn’t bother anyone else.

    Betta late den neva, eh.

    Welcome back David Gilmore!

    Make memories, share memories.

My bestest memory of “Happy” was in the fourth quarter of the 11 Oct 2003 Fresno St. game. UH up 48-28, less than five minutes left in the game. After another incomplete pass by Jason Whieldon on third down, the Warriors are in punt formation. Kurt Milne is back to punt. It takes a while for the snap but Chad Kapanui, lined up as the HB, surveys the Fresno St. punt return squad and their alignment. DG is lined up on the right side seemingly ready to block the outside rusher. On the snap DG takes off downfield while Chad takes the short snap and just launches a floater to DG. DG catches the pass, sprints past a couple of defenders, jukes the punt returner and makes it into the endzone for a 43-yard TOUCHDOWN! After a Jason Ayat PAT, 55-28.

  17. Garret June 22, 2008 4:12 am

Welcome to the Warriors Josh Andrews! I wish you the best in your Warrior career…the defense is pretty deep but hopefully Josh can earn some playing time on special teams and work his way up the depth chart.

One this is for sure: with the depth the team has and how Mack rotates players on D, the players will have a great incentive to work hard and the players on the field will have earned their playing time!

  18. Garret June 22, 2008 4:15 am

    Hi Garret!
    Thanks for the links!
Which games are you planning to attend this fall?

    Hi Liz!

Sorry that I didn’t respond last night, but I was taking care of laundry and packing after I finished posting those links.

As of now, I do not know what games I can attend. I do know that I cannot make it to the Florida game due to work but that I *will* attend the Oregon State game. I’m hoping to attend more games on the mainland or Hawaii, but it will all depend on my work schedule.

  19. Garret June 22, 2008 4:15 am

I’m sure that Jett will like the new dorms!

  20. Garret June 22, 2008 4:23 am

Best of luck to Nicole as she plays soccer for Jamaica!

Basketball’s loss is football’s gain for Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz as Nicole McClure chose to be between the sticks for the National Under-20 Women’s team.

McClure, 18, who plays for the University of Hawaii, was recently contacted by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) to don the national colours and she duly obliged.

“It is really a dream come true to represent Jamaica on the football field,” McClure told the Sunday Observer a day after her ‘baptism’ as a Reggae Girl.

“I started out as a midfielder but after playing basketball, I was better with my hands, so one day after a training session the coach asked who wanted to be the goalkeeper. Everyone raised their hands but I really wanted it so I would stay in the goal a lot longer than everyone else. From that moment on I decided that that was my position,” said McClure.

She has not looked back since racking up impressive stats for her university which captured the Western Athletics Championship (WAC) before getting knocked out in the NCAA first round.

The new Reggae Girl, who is a second year student majoring in business management, was an integral member of the team, appearing in 14 matches, with a one goal-against average.

During the WAC tournament she preserved a shut-out in a double over-time semi-final win over Utah State with a season-high six saves and made five during the second half of the title-clinching victory over Fresno State.

McClure, standing at 5ft 7 inches tall, is considered by the coaching staff as the best female goalkeeper that Jamaica has ever seen.

Condolences to Chad Kapanui and his team…they were eliminated from the playoffs last night, losing a heartbreaker. The other team scored the winning TD with just 37 seconds left…Chad Kapanui threw a TD pass to get his team ahead with just 53 seconds left in the game, but their D gave up a TD in just 16 seconds!

Even with just 30 seconds or so for the final drive of the game, Chad got to the 4-yard-line before he was tackled. So close to winning that playoff game!

he RiverCity Rage defeated the Sioux City Bandits in round one of the UIF playoffs, 37-33, at the Family Arena Saturday night. The win propels the Rage into the Eastern Conference championship game at Bloomington, IL against the Extreme on Monday, June 30th. The Rage scored the go-ahead touchdown with just 37 seconds remaining and their defense held on as the clock ran out on the Bandits.

It then took Sioux City under a minute to take the lead right back as they scored a quick touchdown on a 14-yard pass play to Tommy Hoffer with only 53 seconds remaining. The Rage, though, needed just 16 seconds to respond. Ryan Maiuri found Virgil Union in the corner of the endzone to give the Rage the lead at 37-33. The Sioux City threatened, but the Bandits’ final play of the game ended up just short as Terrell Washington stopped Bandits’ quarterback, Chad Kapanui, at the 4 yard line to give the Rage the victory.

TSAIKOS: Take advantage of Kailua’s bowling alley while you still can. Barring unforseen circumstances, it will be gone shortly. This has been a battle yours truly and other bowling supporters have been fighting for about ten years now, but as the rest of downtown Kailua owned by Kane`ohe Ranch gets developed, it will get harder & harder to keep The Powers That Be from moving forward with that project.

Within five years, the only bowling alleys left on O`ahu will be on the military bases. Just look at how many have disappeared over the past ten years – despite the increase in the sport’s popularity around the world and here in this country.

Unfortunately, like it has with darts and golf, the damage to my shoulder from last August’s accident has pretty much ended my bowling days, but I’m still working on brying to restore most of the mobility through gym workouts. Perhaps one of these days……

Finally I got back on the blog after nearly a week, (not that anyone noticed, lol), but I had both my computers down. Had to completely purge one of them and re-install everything. Well at least now they’re running again as good as new. Boy, sure was weird not seeing the blog for that long.

    Tsai-Meister,

Good story on J.J., very balanced, with good perspective. We all basically know what really happened. All I have to do is recall all the frustrations I’ve felt, when the great buffoon was still running the AD Deptm., so I can just imagine what JJ must have felt over the years. Good article from Ferd also.

I sure like the personal touch and connectedness your pictures create. I really miss not being able to partake in all those fun Tsaiko functions.

I can hardly believe all the studs we have this year. Fall camp can’t come too soon.

Warriors, beat the Gators and the sky is the limit. Win and we’ll have at least five games on TV.

Aloha, everybody, glad to be back.

Could a fund be set up to be used by all student athletes – not just those in a particular sport – to help underwrite room & board costs. Just thinking about the cost to feed a speedy softball player, let alone a 275 lb. defensive lineman, boggles da mind!!

    Prepplayer,
I disagree with your assessment about our present coachin staff. i had to think about how to publicly express myself.

as far as recruiting Hawaii’s “top pick”, In this day and age of the internet, HDTV, Travel Channel, YouTube, most Hawaii teenagers have been laced with stories, experiences and tales from others, includilng the older generation, so much so that rock fever is an accepted expression among us islanders. Friends and friends of friends point to the lifetime advantages that promote the idea of going away for your education. Getting a good education womewhere else, travel now and see the world while you’re young, spread your wings, yadi yada, we’ve all heard that – from the time the Prince and Princess went to England almost 200 years ago. The Grand Canyon, Whistler, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Boston, New York, Chicago, Grand Tetons, Statue of Liberty, Independence Pass, Rifle, Jackson Hole, Chattanooga, Savannah, Montgomery, Philadelphia, DisneyWorld, Auckland, Tane Mahuta, silver doubloons – I wouldn’t know the excitement about these things and places if I have not traveled, alot. So, there is something to be said about the allure of going away, and it has nothing to do with sports.

But the excitement of playing against a national power, and doing very well against a national power, that is happening now at the University of Hawaii. The truth is that Polynesian people fit well in Hawaii. That is real. For those of us who have been discriminated against (and I guess that applies to all of us and all of my ancestors whether they were brown, white, yellow skinned, to some more often than to others), it makes it easier for us to develop and hold onto the “its us against them” mentality. I admit I have that mentality.

I like our team. I have hope for our team. I’m looking forward to going to Gainesville, again. This time, to watch the Warriors make us proud!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  72. Hoohiki June 22, 2008 10:13 am

I feel conflicted about JJ saying goodbye to his Harley even though the proceeds from the sale will benefit UH football. Because he bought it when he first arrived here, it seems to symbolize his affinity with Hawaii and the university and for him to finally give it up, it somehow symbolizes his leaving to be final. Being a little sentimental…

  73. bighilofan2 June 22, 2008 10:15 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

  75. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2008 10:26 am

The Lee brothers are not going.
Most of the new coaches are going.
While UH still wants a presence in American Samoa, the emphasis will be on going after the top local prospects.
UH already has offered 18 scholarships, 11 of which were made to local high school players. While Manti Te‘o is everybody’s No. 1, Dalton Hilliard is high on the list, too.

  76. Hoohiki June 22, 2008 10:27 am

    bhf2,
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the majority of our top local players who were offered scholarships by UH actually stayed home? I remember a time when recruits didn’t even have UH in the mix of schools they considered because exposure was such a big factor and UH did not have that. Now, I think the players have a harder decision because now they do have exposure, NFL contacts, and nothing beats staying home and eat mom’s cooking.

Howzit Gang, back from the Sunday chores

  78. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2008 10:34 am

    Doc:
As I understand, the value of a scholarship is based on a school’s tuition and the area’s cost of living and housing. So, the amount is flexible, but also not so flexible.
UH’s athletic program gets a certain amount of tuition waivers from the school. Koa Anuenue helps raise the rest. (At USC, every football scholarship is endowed.)
However the index is determined, that’s the value of a UH scholarship. So while you may donate to UH’s scholarship fund, it will offset what Koa Anuenue contributes. But it won’t increase a student-athlete’s scholarship check, and thus, it won’t give the player the money to upgrade to a room in Freer (sp?) Hall.

  81. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2008 10:36 am

    Hoohiki:
June is correct in that a certain number of players want to go away. And, realistically, UH doesn’t have enough scholarships to give to every Division I-A prospect in Hawai‘i. That said, UH’s goal is to land every TOP Division I-A prospect.

  82. Stephen Tsai June 22, 2008 10:38 am

Ever go to Sears for a tire?
They always recommend 39 other things they want to do to your car. It’s like, please, just focus on the tire.
It would be like going to a doctor for a thumb injury and he starts recommending treatments for other parts.
Well, that’s this blog. The computer guys are always bopping in and out of this blog, tinkering with things you didn’t ask to be tinkered. And, every so often, they’ll shut down something to tinker with something else, then forget to re-activate what was shut down. It’s like a plumber forgetting to turn back on the water after he fixes your toilet.

  88. Pauoa Boy June 22, 2008 10:50 am

I agree that UH tries its best to land all the top local boys possible and realistically cannot offer every single one of them. It is true that if the players want to stay home, they stay. If they want to go away, they go.

I think our college-bound students should have a chance to have a home-in vacation in the area they are thinking about BEFORE they commit to a school. There are sooo many factors in play. And the student’s own personality as well as the availability of ohana is important.

Jordon Dizon was successful in Colorado but not everyone could have done it – even Colt, in his videos hints at the kind of pressures there were at CU.

Another of our wessai brainiacs was accepted by Harvard but the lack of ohana and the racial-cultural-socio-economic striation of the area sent him packing for home after a few months.

Some kids just want to get off the rock.
Some get affected by the cold weather or lack of sunlight.
Some miss Hawaiian music on the radio and all the subtle cultural props that we take for granted every day.

These factors work the other way too – thanks to the people who embraced the very- embraceable Colt, the shock of living in Hawaii was mitigated.

From everything I’ve heard over the last two years, Jett Jasper has been helpful in this way too. His blond local boy charm, Mr. Aloha heritage (3rd generation of a good fuud/popular business sportsbar family) and willingness to help (transport) others makes it easier for our off-island students to adjust here.

So whether the best of our best decide on UH or a mainland school to start- we would do well to keep the home fires burning and keep the welcome mat out for some changes are inevitable.

  98. FloridaTed June 22, 2008 12:32 pm

Keeping all our top ten recruits at home is impossible, not even the super programs keep all their top local prospects. The urge to go away is not exclusive to Hawaii, but is part of every young persons mind. Some actually need it, others do just fine staying home. Besides, nobody really ever knows how any touted prospects will turn out under the lights. But Hawaii, especially under Coach Mack, is on the right track.

The main goal for us should be to consistantly keep 8 to 10 of our top 20 prospects here, regardless of the numbered order, supplement the rest with mainlanders and other good local prospects and build as much depth as possible by offering rewarding playing time to all hard workers

We will see in the next few years, under McMackin, that our growing depth in all positions will do more for the quality of our team than a few superstars.

We often had great starters in the past, but lost many big games in the fourth quarter due to big drop-offs from the back-ups or the starters getting worn down. I like the direction Coach Mack is taking. I truly believe that under his reign we won’t have many, if any at all, up and down seasons.

Aside from a certain prestige factor, not even a Manti Teo will make or brake this program, but continuing to improve our defense, always having at least 8 receivers ready to go and 3 QB’s, all staggered in years, coming up in the offense, continue building depth on both sides of the line that, my friends, will get us consistantly to the promised land of big time college football. We’re almost there, you all will find out this year how close we really are. That’s my three cents.

    ST, Re: Tires/Sears
From my experiences, Sears will check out the front end of your car when you go in for tires and advise you as to what should be done. Usually they mean well. In my youger days, I used to work part-time at my father’s brake shop. There i would usually check out areas related/connected with the braking system. All this was to ensure that the customer’s vehicle was safe to operate. I don’t think that you would want to go somewhere that will do only what you want and not adise you if something appears wrong.

Good afternoon Tsaikos here and around the globe. Nice day on Maui and hope you all are having the same.

tm, yes, what michelle made is not very much, and at this rate, she won’t qualify for the samsung which pays the biggest purse. her course management leaves a lot to be desired, 4 birdies in the front, then 2 bogeys and 2 birdies. that is not smart course management, take out the bogeys and she would have shot 6 under today, but she has yet to show she can play a round without bogeys or doubles.

warrior football appears to be shaping up and the players are starting to think bigger dreams. the work ethics they do this preseason will directly affect their season and they appear to be ready to challenge the opposing teams. injuries which were a major problem in the past appears to be minimal and because of their efforts to get in better shape, injuries are on a downward trend. keep up the good work and look forward to when training starts.

    howzit everybody.

wuz lookin for the UH Football Roster for 2008 and ran into Tombo Ahi’s blog post this morning, which had referrals to da odda reporter odda newspapaer stories about UH Football and ST stories over the past few days.

Learned that 10 football coaches, five from Hawaii and five from SMU, will conduct the first June Jones American Samoa Football Academy a week from tomorrow in Pago Pago. The UH coaches are Greg McMackin, Alex Gerke, Nick Rolovich, Brian Smith and Craig Stutzmann. The SMU coaches are Jones, Dennis McKnight, Wes Suan, Jeff Reinebold and Frank Gansz. The June Jones Foundation is sponsoring the academy, as well as $2,000 college football scholarships that will go to five of the expected 550 participants, foundation director Kevin Kaplan said.

“They don’t have to go to Hawaii or SMU. They can go anywhere they want, as long as it’s in the United States,” Kaplan said.

Current and former NFL players Jesse Sapolu, Maa Tanuvasa, Mel Purcell, Reagan Mauia, Paul Soliai and Leo Goeas are also scheduled to appear, Kaplan said.

And I recalled, while reading all this, that it wasn’t too many years ago that some Samoan kids hadn’t played football until their last year in high school.

As much as I like talk stink about JJ, da bradda is doing good for our community. So hats off to you JJ. Yu not perfect; nobody is. So all in all, good luck at SMU.

btw, saw Brian Smith in the hall the other day. He has been working out.

  107. Jason June 22, 2008 2:42 pm

People were talking about keeping the local athletes here. Well, it extends to all potential college students. I never could have gone to the Mainland to study — I love Hawai‘i too much to leave for so long. On the other hand, I have friends who hate it here, both immigrants and born-and-raised. They go to the Mainland, and they stay there; some have sworn never to come back if possible, and if they do come back, they do so begrudgingly. And I’m sure it’s the same way everyplace else.

To me, I’d need to look at the kids in the middle, the ones who say it’s okay to stay, but it’s okay to go as well. Are we offering them (and all the other students) a feasible option here at UH? And this is not just for athletics, this is for academics as well. If UH doesn’t offer an academic and/or athletic program that is good enough to attract those kids in the middle, then why the heck should they stay. We’re talking about a college education — that’s not a decision to be taken lightly. We can’t ask kids to stay because we want them to — but it needs to be because here is right for them.

    Hiya!
Michelle Wie Rocks! One day at a time… keep on keeping on!

    Hi, Mrs. LT!

Hi Nick from Kapaa! Kauai is funny that way… the high school “loyalties”, I mean. That all changed for us with the 2005 All-Kauai Rose Parade Band. We forgot about island regionalism and began to think like an island united. That effort was a benefit to every school and every student and parent.

When Jett was at Kauai High, he and his team kicked Waimea’s butt all year long. But my personal friendship with the Jasper family made me a proud auntie anyway. The older I get, the larger my ohana becomes. That’s just my perspective growing…
    like my bod… bwahahaha!

We’re really all family on this planet earth.

Enjoy a meal and beverages at JJ’s sometime when you come back to Kauai- tell ’em you’re Jett’s classmate at UH

Someone was asking about Geordan Hanohano.
by now a defense strategy has been formulated.
imho the key to a successful defense is a brutal offense, with Jervis
testifying in his defense. and bring in a defense psychologist,
and putting all four big boys on the witness stand, twice.
let the jury see them. put a carton of eggs in their hand, turn off the
    courtroom lights.

for this reason I don’t see Geordan playing this year. carlisle won’t let
    it happen.
    imho

Mrs LT – Thanks for stopping by this site and giving us some insight to your son. It is great that he has the drive to get better as a person and football player by being out there with the other guys. The experience he is gaining is no doubt invaluable.

At the Beast’s graduation party, Bulla brought over your son to meet the Tsaikos. We are thankful he stopped by to say Hi. I am sure we will see and hear about him for years to come in a Warriors uniform.

My current Rotary Pres. was supposed to meet Bryan in Whitby, Scotland this week where a sister city relationship was being established (our Prez. was born is Scotland).

Hi JaM! Actually, I was trying to take it easy this weekend and stay off my feet. So I am carrying a bowl of cereal for breakfast, trip, turn my ankle and whack my shin on an object. So it was back to the ice packs today…. arrrgggh! My feet were cramping a lot and making strange shapes.

This is one of the most difficult blog entries that I’ve ever seen. However, *if* this blog is credible (which, given the quality of the writing and the fact that it is a soccer blog, is questionable), then UCLA is leading in the recruiting battle over Kapolei’s Stanley Hasiak. It is interesting that he’ll attend camps at UCLA and USC this week…how things go there might determine which school will lead in the recruiting battle over him.

Earlier in the spring, Hasiak up some eyes with a quality performance at the NIKE Combine in Honolulu. He was timed in the 40 at 5.4 electronically. He also a perpendicular leap of 30-, and ran an impressive for a big guy 4.7-shuttle time.

On Monday I leave of absence for California, Hasiak said. On the 24th Ill be doing the last day of UCLAs camp and while Im there Im profitable to do an off-the-record.

Then on the 25th and 26th is USCs rising stars camp and Ill be there, Hasiak said. If I have time Ill do an unofficial over there. Then on 27th Ill be working to San Francisco to official visit Cal.

At the moment Hasiak has from Arizona, Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, UCLA, Michigan State, SMU and San Diego State.

I didnt want to say everything previous, Hasiak said. Right now I feel like just a little bit more than the extra teams that Im oriented towards UCLA.

Yes, Norm Chow is the offensive coordinator at UCLA and he could be a huge help in their recruiting Hawaii players, especially those who play offense. Their new head coach is also a very good recruiter, so they will probably do a really good job at making a favorable impression on the players who attend their camp.

Practiced my drives and putts at Pearl City Country Club this morning. Not very good. Last time to golf before the best ball tournament next Sunday on Kauai.

Hubby is much better at it.

  184. Stretch June 22, 2008 10:25 pm

Dined out twice today. Banana Leaf Pasta Cafe for lunch.

Genki Sushi for dindin. More variety than Tokyo, but I miss the thick slices of sashimi that were fresh caught in northern Japan. Can’t beat the sushi in Japan.

  186. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 10:26 pm

stretch, hubby will buy 24 at Costco next Friday, when he usually shops there.

  187. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 10:29 pm

Titleist is the best ball and hubby questioned buying those instead of something cheaper — especially since we might lose them all at the course. $32.

  188. Jason June 22, 2008 10:34 pm

gigi goes from never eating raw fish to yelling at Genki servers, “I like it thick!”

  191. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER June 22, 2008 10:37 pm

gigi- bring some junk balls along too. Sometimes I hit a junk ball on iffy holes – like hole 6 that spans a gulch.
Don’t worry- the ladies’ tee is on the same side of the gluch as the green 😉

  192. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 10:38 pm

yes, Jason, I ate all the poke.

somehow, the raw fish in Hawaii doesn’t taste as good as fish in Tokyo. Or is it just my imagination?

A blogger told me the cantaloupe that sells for $105 in Tokyo is worth every penny. He even said the rice tastes better in Japan.

Must be the romance of a foreign city that makes you think that way.

  193. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 10:40 pm

    Re- balls.

Hubby said 24 balls at Costco probably costs about the same as cheaper balls at Sports Authority so he is set on buying the Titleist at Costco.

How much do you guys spend on balls?

  194. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 10:44 pm

BTW, Jason, the subways in Tokyo were steel on steel. They were pretty quiet and fast. Hubby and I will not sign any peition to stop rail now.

I like Titleist too, btw. But for as much as I play, pah! I don’t buy much.

  196. Stretch June 22, 2008 10:44 pm

gigi – go to sports auhtority, wal-mart, kmart or some of the cheap places. you don’t need to spend big money on golf balls. you could use the range balls and it will not affect your game yet.

If you know what I mean, just too funny with lots of good info in between and no need refresh! Good to see Rich, Ronnie, and her best friend Rob25 doing well. Got to meet Tsaiko Ralph and lurkers Brenda and Cathy = ). Unfortunatley did not (have time to) meet Tsaikos Midnight or Long Time UH Fan. = ( . Just plain wonderful to break bread, sing, and spend time with the Tsaiko blog gang; always always such a terribly awesome time. I always say Tsaikos just know how to have good (clean) fun. Got to say hi to most but if you can believe it, missed saying hi to some and only said hi/bye when making the rounds to leave. Funny Rob25 observed it took Midori and I 15-30 minutes to say bye to everyone. lol.

Saturday, 6/21: Next came Saturday’s Tsaiko Dinner & Cosmic Bowling activity that happened to be my twin sister Midori’s birthday. Mr. & Mrs A-house and Midori, thank you for your gracious hospitality and opening up your hale making it a warm homestyle Midori birthday party. To the attending Tsaikos, thank you for joining us in our quest to “fight” the post UH sports/pre-UH football “blahs.” Addaknowjoe, Addaknowsports, Chawan, James, Koakane, lakerjm(sp?), Mike & grlfrnd, Peaches, Rob25, Ronnie & son & niece, ST & Wena + son & daughter Allie, SteveM, & Stretch, thank you, thank you, thank you for joining us! As usual we had too much fun. After getting home, Midori and I were too awake and talked on the phone recapping the week’s events. giggle.

Liz, I’ll probably bring some Pepperidge Farm cookies to the potluck on Sunday, Can’t think of anything else that will fit into my carry-on without leaking or spilling.

    Looking forward to the BBQ.

  204. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 11:18 pm

UHfan, hi. Yeah, what a week, huh? We all had a good time.

  205. UHfan808 June 22, 2008 11:23 pm

gigi- Yep great week and looking forward to more. Good seeing you and mr gigi out at Thursday get-together. Have you recovered from your Japan trip? Welcome back home btw.

  206. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 11:25 pm

yeah, I’m pooped right now. Will probably go to bed pretty soon.

  207. Jason June 22, 2008 11:38 pm

UHfan808: Err, Fresno won last Tuesday. They lost yesterday, but won today.

  208. Jason June 22, 2008 11:41 pm

    Warning: Political Talk

gigi: You do realize the petition isn’t to stop rail, but to get it on the ballot. Don’t you think the public has the right to decide for itself whether to spend taxpayer money on this endeavor? Once it gets on the ballot, then the voting public will get to decide whether or not to continue with the rail initiative. Sign the petition, get the topic on the ballot, and vote in favor of it if you want. As for me, I’ll vote against it. But I could tolerate rail passing if it went to a public vote; if it goes through because of the Mayor’s dictatorial-esque actions, then I’ll be pissed and disgusted.

    End: Political Talk

  209. UHfan808 June 22, 2008 11:45 pm

Wow my palm centro phone has a limit on text entries. lol that I reached that limit on the last post.

    cont’d week…

(skipped) blessing on Friday, 6/20: Jon Hee got golden glove (?) award!!! Superb job he did playing for the UH Rainbows, he really deserves it! Whooohooo!!!!!

Upcoming week began today and is off to a great start with WAC CWS baseball game, FSU vs UNC. Awesome work and representation FSU did winning 6:1. That FSU Mendonca 3rd baseman with broken hand fielded great and got on base bringing home his teammates when the team needed him. Ahhhh he reminds me of Jon Hee. Shucks I wish UH made it there instead but…GO WAC!

CWS game on tomorrow and Tuesday! It’s WAC vs SEC, FSU vs Georgia. Sounds too familiar to Sugar Bowl???

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Hey Midori what else we doin’ this week??? Chawan wants to see Indie!!!

  210. al June 22, 2008 11:47 pm

    gigi….cookies?
    bring manapua
two frozen guava chiffon cakes from delight bakery boxed for flight.

  211. Ralph June 22, 2008 11:51 pm

UHfan808 you used all your text memory thursday night..A/joe was amazed, he said, these girls texting each other and they sitting next to each other.

  212. SteveM June 22, 2008 11:53 pm

    Hello and good night!

I still haven’t recovered from Thursday night. Going to work tomorrow might put me back on track 🙁

Best wishes to Rich2176 and Ronnie as they leave Oahu! I’m already hearing enthusiastic talk about meeting in Las Vegas for the 2009 UH-UNLV game! See you folks again, hopefully, when the seaon starts.

  213. Ralph June 22, 2008 11:53 pm

Al I was thinking the same thing! don’t they have safeway on Kauai selling cookies, or long’s. DUH

  214. gigi-hawaii © June 22, 2008 11:54 pm

Last post before I call it a night —

Jason, the petition is being promoted by the stop rail now committee. But you already know that. I see no reason for it to be placed on the ballot so we will not sign it. Fasi had the vision, but rene mansho smashed it. Then mufi comes along and gets rail going. RAIL ALL DA WAY, BABY!

Al, manapua will be stale by Sunday, We are leaving Saturday morning. 2 cakes will not fit in my carryon.

    Thanks and g’nite, folks!

  215. UHfan808 June 22, 2008 11:55 pm

Jason- #208 Yep you’re correct! Saw-wee for confusing anybody.

Tuesday, 6/17: FSU won vs UNC
Saturday, 6/21: FSU lost vs UNC
Sunday, 6/22: FSU won vs UNC

Guess mebbe easier to post from computer. lol.

Thank you for the correction; saw-wee again!!!

  216. al June 22, 2008 11:57 pm

so it was you who ate all the poke.

did you know we had to order addtional poke?
    now i know why.

and who ate all the teriyaki steak???

  217. al June 23, 2008 12:00 am

no, no, no, no…..you carry the cakes separately in your other hand.

eh, kauai got costco. if it is a potluck bbq, buy some steaks there.

  218. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER June 23, 2008 12:01 am

gigi- no need bring fuud. Rotary club does potlucks like Tsai-kos. If anything, bring a lilikoi chiffon pie from our early lunch at Hamura Saimin 😉

  219. UHfan808 June 23, 2008 12:02 am

Jason- Mebbe wanted FSU to lose but wanted them to win at same time. lol.

    Anyhoo…GO WAC!!!

  220. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER June 23, 2008 12:05 am

I still am in shock from our Mayor’s passing. He was much younger than me…
He was a sweetheart… I guess that is why he was called onward. Tough times ahead for Kauai… where fragmentation and disunity is rampant in some circles.

  221. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER June 23, 2008 12:06 am

Nitey nite and sweet dreams, ka kou!

  222. Jason June 23, 2008 12:07 am

Of course, gigi ate all the steak too. 😉

  223. al June 23, 2008 12:15 am

    jason you witness that, too?

  224. al June 23, 2008 12:17 am

hey don’t you guys work tomw?

uhfan….i heard that you are a ringer at the alleys.

  225. Jason June 23, 2008 12:20 am

All I know is that I had something like five pieces, and I wanted more. That was good steak. 😀

I think I’m heading to bed. Good night.

  226. 99club June 23, 2008 12:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

It’s going to be tough for Fresno today since Georgia’s pitchers have had an extra day to rest their arms. Anyone know how much extra cash the WAC receives for Fresno making it to the championship? Just curious.

This marks the end of the year for NCAA sports, eh? Next up: FOOTBALL!

    Re-Kapolei Hurricanes Football Website

I was looking at their football roster. And once coming to their web site, this is one of the better ones I’ve seen, including all of high school and college. I’ve been to the official sites of the Florida Gators, Notre Dame, SMU, UH and a few of the high schools in the state and I’m really impressed with Kapolei’s. The detail and depth of how the web site allows the visitor to look into the roster with pictures of the players, highlights of games and a long list of other facts related to Kapolei football works it’s way in inspiring not only the current players. But the future ones, too. Instilling school pride, note the yearly academic teams. And acknowledging on the field achievement is so purposeful as a motivational tool for the players to ascend to.Even looking at the past players strength and speed PRs makes the current players have goals to shoot for. And how, someday soon, I wish that someone will work on UHs official website.

For the UH official athletic website it doesn’t exude any school pride like Kapolei’s. In a matter of minutes I was able to read about the Kapolei’s coaches preamble, pledge and philosophies. And as a visitor to the Kapolei website I see where the former Hurricanes are going to college. Does the UH site acknowledge past player awards of alumni in the NFL? The answers is no. Does the UH site have a school’s mission statement. Or President’s statement. Or athletic director statement. Or coaches statement, like Kapolei’s?No, no, no, no.

When potential athletes, donors, alumni and fans come across the UHs official website does it grab them the same way that Kapolei’s does? For myself, no it doesn’t. I feel the buzz words inviting, captivating, coveting and wanting of the Kapolei’s site. For a relatively new school (2002) it wants the visitor to experience the lore and the history of the team. And I don’t gain any excitement from the UH’s site. Yet they have the capacity to do so. Especially seeing that they have a 100 years to expand on and alumni to call upon.

Yes, I think the official UH’s football site needs a lot of improving.

    Here’s a look at Kapolei’s football website.

    Good Morning Tsaiko’s!

    Pay attention PLEASE!

~ We will be finalizing the Menu for the “Celeblog Bash” this week with the UH people. (Koakane’s coined phrase from his vast Dictatorial archives).

~ We will also be putting the finishing touches on the financial arrangements made by our Finance Minister, Stretch & Company to fund this event AND fund raise for our favorite UH Sports teams.

~ I’m compiling an impressive list of special guests invited to share their Mana’o with the Tsaiko Ohana, and possibly adding more. So far we have 4 former star athletes in attendance.

~ There will be various displays and of course the central theme to the Warrior Beat, is Football. What better centerpieces to have but the Warrior Mannequins that Coach Mack has graciously loaned us to show off those great new Under Armour Unis in Home and Away colors. Whoo Hoo!

~ Soon James will list some of the various sale items, raffles, games, prizes and surprises and the supah doopah Grand Prize for the nite offered by the AD hizzself, JD.

~ And finally, the word is that the former ‘Underground Garage Band’ now known as the *Tsaiko All Star Band* is kona be making one Secret Spesho Kanikapila Kine practice at an undisclosed location sometime this week.

The key to all this good fun is that you must be there or ‘be square’ as they used to say back in the day. There is only room for 125 lucky people in the Ed Wong Hospitality Room. In order to get in on the fun, one must be on the guest list…and just how does one lucky buggah get on top dat list you may ask Kekoa?…Send in your request for tickets to Braddah Stretch:

    tsaikoparty@yahoo.com

You will receive instructions on how to send your $20.00 donation in for a confirmation number. Keep in mind that there are only 125 seats available for this event. Once we have received payment for that amount…pau! You sheet stay in da wash braddah and you outta luck!

    More laterz!
    Kekoa

  229. Ralph June 23, 2008 1:44 am

Kekoa I sent e mail to stretch confirming my attendance…asked him to post on blog if he got the email.. is SteveM gonna keep a running count of attendees?

Gigi and Jason – do either of you know the reason that this rail system is being built?

  231. mctruck June 23, 2008 4:27 am

I’m thinking, Fresno to go all the way to wrapup the National Collegiate baseball championship.
If not, at least FSU showed the nation that the WAC plays some awesome BB.

Go Dogs!!, do the WAC proud.

  236. Stretch June 23, 2008 5:36 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Since Kekoa sent out how to RSVP for the party on July 10, I will add a little more.

Anyone interested in attending the party or have questions can send an email with your blog name and real name to tsaikoparty@yahoo and I will reply with instructions how to make the payment. After receiving your payment, I will send you a confirmation email that you are all set. As Kekoa already mentioned, there is space for 125 people so please do not wait if you want to attend. I will feel bad for telling people that no more space. Mahalo

did you know we had to order addtional poke?
    now i know why.
and who ate all the teriyaki steak???

Is this the reason why SteveM mentioned that you were short money on Thursday and had to put in your own?? For the party on July 10, once the food is pau, it’s pau. No more ordering additional food. I am sure everyone here knows how to take their share of food and leave some for others to enjoy.

  238. Kekoa June 23, 2008 6:45 am

Sad ending to one of our most memorable parties. Brother Al has been stiffed by certain individuals. Those who happened to notice compared notes, and witnessed these folks unabashedly partake of more than their share. Just a gentle reminder that it’s not what most of us were taught when we grew up here in the islands. Please share the Aloha.

To help ensure that this does not happen at the anniversary blog bash, we have taken steps to order more than enough food to satisfy the 125 guests in attendance. Believe me, along with the food and entertainment, there will be more prizes and surprises than you could ever imagine!

I’m happy to report that the *Tsaiko All Star Band* held their first practice session, and sounded good enuff to go into a recording studio and cut an album!

No kidding! They were in sync from their very first song, to the 16th song they played nearly non stop! There could have been more songs to follow but our lead singer and instrumentalist had to go manage his Safeway store in Kapolei before the masses stormed the store at the dinner hour!

Stay tuned for more announcements concerning the *Anniversary Celeblog Bash* as we move forward to July 10th.

Don’t forget to email Stretch at tsaikoparty@yahoo.com for your confirmation information.

sorry, no can come 7/10. next time. but my bannah stay dayah.

did you see the Kapolei Hurricanes website???? pretty cool. they make themselves feel really good even with a 7-4 season. There is a marketing genius in that school, not sure if its eteamz, or the Kapolei water. whatever, Marlis is right.
They’ve got the winning ticket. I’m gonna find out from the horse’s mouth how they’re doing it. Today. I’m betting its got something to do with students pitchin in from one or more of their classes. With a leader somewhere in the mix.

so Kekoa, what can you tell us about this Hasiak (sp?)
