Receiver set to join Warriors

The older brother of one of the Warriors’ top freshman recruits will be joining the football team this year.

Brayden Van Ackeren, who was a receiver at San Diego last year, will transfer to UH, his brother Kendrick Van Ackeren confirmed. Kendrick Van Ackeren is a safety from Bellevue (Wash.) High.

Brayden Van Ackeren was a starting receiver and safety on Bellevue’s state champion 3A teams in 2008 and 2009. He was named the Kingco Conference special teams player of the year as a junior in 2008, and was on the All-Kingco second team as a receiver in 2009. He will compete at receiver for the Warriors.

In accordance with NCAA transfer rules, he will have to sit out this season, then have three years to play three seasons.

Just noticed this video: Kendrick Van Ackeren signing.

And the time to meet Greg Salas ended yesterday. He returned to California, and has resumed his usual training routine.

It appears the Greg McMackin Show will be back on KGMB this year.

  59. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 8:42 am

When Curt asked Mack who could replace Rolovich if he decided to pursue other ventures, it got me thinking of who out there were RnS type offensive coordiators/coaches.

I couldn’t think of any outside of Mike Leach and Dana Holgorsen.

    The Former Coach’s went undefeated.

  61. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 8:44 am

didn’t they run the RnS at St Louis?

  62. rage777 July 11, 2011 8:44 am

The only person that can stand around during a soccer game is the goalie. Everyone else is constantly moving, whether it’s walking, jogging, or running. The referee probably has to run more than any other person on the field.

I played for 12 years, and find it exciting to watch. But I could see how the casual fan gets bored and not interested, because I feel the same way about baseball, bowling, NASCAR, etc.

  63. Manoa Mist July 11, 2011 8:46 am

    #61,

was thinking more like those who ran the RnS at the college or pro level that could fill the void if Rolovich did leave.

I mean heck if Maryland was looking to poach JJ and his system, someone like Rolovich could very well be on the radar for some bigger name school.

Might have to go back to the trip option? =(..Wait wasn’t there some guy who used to post here that UH should go back to that offense because GT was so successful with it in the ACC etc.

    Differences between Rolovich’s and JJ’s offense…Opinions?

From watching the games last year, Rolo is more creative than JJ. Like the play they ran against Idaho. It looked like a bubble screen, but then there was a lateral to a receiver coming around. Incidentally, the knee wasn’t down, and the play should have stood as a long gainer. 😛

  71. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 8:59 am

I wish I had your memory haha.

  72. d1shima July 11, 2011 9:00 am

    iwwthm,

Not familiar with Dana Holgorsen but a gugu search did turn up this:

According to one beat writer, though, Holgorsen’s latest incident was actually the most recent in a line of several drunken run-ins over the past few months.

According to Chuck Landon of the Times West Virginian, and citing several sources on the matter, Holgorsen has “reportedly been involved in at least three and, perhaps, as many as six alcohol-related incidents in the last six months”.

  73. d1shima July 11, 2011 9:02 am

    “True Tight End”

Can’t just have one on the roster. Do you give up 3 or more spots (schollies) to potential Salas/Pilares types?

  74. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 9:03 am

    #72,

Yea there seems to be a lot of controversy with this guy recently. Bill Stewart was accused of digging up dirt on this guy and not helping with the transition of the WV program. It ended up with Stewart being fired.

  75. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 9:05 am

    #73,

I think Salas could have been used as a tight end in any other program or any other scheme even without gaining another 15-20lbs. I would give up 3 spots for 3 Salas types any day of the week.

    # gigi-hawaii:

gigi, Ron Lee ran the offense the year before Rolo took over. It was predictable and horrible. But then again, I believe the coach was giving in to fan critics about running the ball more and passing less, which was a mistake because the players in the system were recruited to pass first, run little. I think Ron Lee is running the offense at Kalani High School this year. I could be wrong.

I’m hoping that Rolo is mentoring someone at UH, or maybe bring back Colt and groom him…that’s if Colt doesn’t make the Hartford roster in the UFL.

Well, we used to use Reagan Mauia and David Farmer as H-backs …

Leach, Holgorsen, Hal Mumme, those are all Air Raid guys. Got some differences from the R&S.

Here’s a great article on the differences with Leach and Holgorsen: http://smartfootball.com/grab-bag/smart-notes-big-10-holgorsen-muschamp-12142010

Yea the Air Raid isn’t exactly the same as the RnS but its very similar where we could continue with the same kind of potent passing offense. I have always liked Leach’s offense at TTech. Boo to Craig James.

How about Funaki as a coach? Was it ST who mentioned it?

  84. sports for fun July 11, 2011 9:23 am

    @#79

Jason, thanks for the great read on the RnS. I saw a link about Mike Leach when he was at Texas Tech and clicked on it. Here is a drill that it mentions he did every day for EVERY quarterback on the roster to participate in. I think it’s a great drill…

    Routes on air:

Probably their best drill. The coaches line up garbage cans or bags or whathaveyou where defenders would drop for a zone. Then all five receivers and/or runningbacks line up, and they call a play. Five quarterbacks (or four and a manager, etc) each drop back and throw the ball to a receiver. Here’s the deal: if you’re the QB who should throw it to the first read, you drop back and throw it to him. If you are assigned to the third read, well you drop back, look at #1, then #2, then #3 and throw it to him. Same goes for #2, #4, and even #5. Moreover, every receiver who runs the route catches a ball and practices scoring. Then the quarterbacks rotate over — i.e. if you threw it to #2 now you throw it to #3, etc — and a new group of receivers steps in. This way quarterbacks absolutely learn all their reads and practice it every day (how many reps like this does the third or fourth string guy at another school get?), and they also practice throwing it to all their receivers. Each time they do this.

Love this drill!! If Rolo goes, we’d have to get uku billions of private sponsors to get Mike Leach to come over and run the offense.

  85. d1shima July 11, 2011 9:26 am

    Jason beat me to it.

Another discussion about AirRaid vs RnS.

    http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/2009/04/ballad-of-hal-mumme.html

In the comments, one poster who claims to have known Mumme for a long time writes:

Coach Mumme will be the first to tell you that he did not invent his offense, but that he borrowed it from the BYU teams of Chow, Henderson, Olson, and Edwards. He just adapted it to the shotgun (but largely kept the two backs, unlike Leach and Hatcher) and heavily de-emphasized the running component in favor of short throws and screens.

then states that AirRaid is really in the West Coast Offense “tree”

So he and his offense belong in the West Coast coaching tree – which is why the Airraid is fundementally different from the Run and Shoot even though the pass routes have become similar through convergent evolution: the Airraid is a child of the West Coast with its 7 man protections and uneven passing formations, while the R&S is a fundementally balanced, singleback philosophy with 6 man protection.

  86. sports for fun July 11, 2011 9:26 am

    gigi,

Funaki, if given the right mentor would be a great OC. Good suggestion.

  87. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 9:30 am

    #84,

    Sounds intense.

Apparently Leach in his dire situation isn’t above coaching a non-BCS school. He applied for the SDSU job when Hoke left for Michigan. Timing is everything and I think the wounds are still too fresh for a school to pick him up.

He’s a funny guy, but he is very very strange.lol.

  89. d1shima July 11, 2011 9:34 am

  94. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 9:45 am

    #85,

From some of what I have read Leach took Mumme’s offense and reworked it into his own. Whereas Mumme’s might be “closer” to the WCC, Leach’s Air Raid utilized more bubble screens, option routes, shotgun influence and is closer to the RnS then it is to the WCC. These are coming from some blogs as well so take it with a grain of salt haha.

Convergent evolution may be the right word and bringing together the WCC and RnS is quite interesting.

  95. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 9:47 am

I am sure Funaki is soaking up all the knowledge as a grad assistant and helping out Rolovich.

  112. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 10:13 am

whoa. lots of posts since I went offline to pay some bills.

    I pay by check.

    anybody pay online?

any bad experiences paying via the internet?

  113. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 10:15 am

NFL and NBA — all the same.

they will settle and they will play.

they stand to lose more money if they don’t.

  114. Kevin July 11, 2011 10:23 am

    Yup…

NFL .. NBA all the SAME indeed. 🙄

  115. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 10:37 am

kevin, too bad, I ate all of my peanut butter and jelly sandwich, so no more for you.

    lol

  116. mctruck July 11, 2011 10:56 am

    Gigi,

I pay most everything online, except just two things.

I never did trust paying online and just started doing so past couple years now….have had no problems thus far.

  117. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 10:59 am

    mctruck, mahalo for replying.

I have paid Amazon via the internet and had no problems with them.

however, I once paid someone via PAYPAL and got screwed when I was charged TWICE for the same item.

Took awhile beffore that was cleared up.

  118. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 11:00 am

since we are planning to travel to Europe next year for 2-3 weeks, we are looking into paying bills via internet.

    kinda scary, though.

  119. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 11:01 am

why do refrees out of position like to make calls they really cannot see?

  124. Da Punchbowl Kid July 11, 2011 11:18 am

Considering the size, strength and speed of our RBs this year, perhaps some of them could be used as “H” backs or psuedo TEs. Considering the depth and talent at RB I also wonder if UH could use an option series of some kind, with more than one RB at a time being utilized.

  125. al July 11, 2011 11:21 am

123…because one of them must make a call.

  126. jm2375 July 11, 2011 11:22 am

gigi – make sure your credit card company(ies) know that you are traveling abroad or they might think your card was stolen! Plus, companies have no problem taking early payments. I usually pay everything before I leave. Haven’t had any problem paying on-line and have some payments automatically charged to the credit card or automatically paid by the bank.

  127. sports for fun July 11, 2011 11:25 am

A-House, not all referees out of position like to make calls they can’t see, just as some referees who are in position don’t make calls they do see. 😛

  128. Thanks for writing this.I’ve been thinking about going back to college.

All you probably need to know about Tate Forcier

  131. al July 11, 2011 11:59 am

    thanks nyuh.

  132. Fat Jeff July 11, 2011 12:01 pm

    NYUH,

Mahalo for the link. That looked a lot like many UH scoring drives. You can see the kid executed.

When it comes to Forcier, his football talents really haven’t been debated. He can play. The question is, can he fit in? Can he wait his turn? Is he willing to do the work on and off the field? If he can do those things and bring play like in that video, he could be a great addition to the Warriors.

  133. al July 11, 2011 12:32 pm

well, he would be an early christmas present for rolo and mack.

high priority for this coming recruit class was to add an experienced qb to the mix since all of the qb hopefuls for next year have virtually no game experience at this time. last year’s pick up, kevin spain has not been able to display any type of meaningful passing exhibitions due to the injury to his throwing side shoulder.

so this would have left the competition for the all important qb race to graves, shutter, and now higgins. all of whom have great potential but lack experience on the turf.

surely the competition is still wide open to all but having a guy who has been on the line makes a huge difference. a couple of years ago we added greg alexander and rausch as jc transfers for the same reasoning. we also took in a jc walkon who is now our starting qb. this time we are attempting to woo a guy with big ten experience, that’s huge.

add forcier to the mix and i’d say that we should end up with another very good qb whether it is forcier or one of the guys already scheduled to enter camp.

    …nuff said

  134. al July 11, 2011 12:34 pm

did anyone notice in that youtube.com clip nyuh sent that there was a big olineman for michigan named “huyge”, which he was.

    You’re right.

Bottom line, the hs athlete is not as mature but the game is just as fierce. There are more severe injuries playing football than soccer, i.e. more broken necks, broken bones, career ending concussions….lol even with all da pads.

If you compare a pro soccer athlete versus a skill pro NFL athlete, or a D1 soccer athlete versus a D1 skill football athlete, there’s no comparison. The NFL or D1 football athlete is bigger, faster, and stronger. There have been a lot of skilled college football athletes who had world-class sprinter speed, i.e. ex-NFL Elvin Hayes; More than a few with training could have gone on to the Olympics but instead chose a possible career in the NFL because of the money, the notoriety, and football being NUMERO UNO in the USA…lol there are some who will say March Madness, or the World Series, or the NBA championship is NUMERO UNO.

Soccer is the number one and most watched sports in the World, but not in the USA or Hawaii (except during the Olympics when it’s the USA versus the world)—that’s why it’s free to go to HS and college soccer games, but you pay to see college baseball, basketball and football games.

Yep you see a lot of kids and their parents on weekends involved in soccer leagues. But, the best of ‘em, especially the guys, turn to football, baseball, basketball by the time they enter the 9th grade.

GIGI #112. I use a program called “Mint” which is a free program designed by the guy that owns “Quicken” but I think Mint is a better and more friendly program.

Mint keeps a day-to-day update of your bank account, charge cards etc.

From the program, you can access the bank and the charge card people. I have been paying on-line for years and even on occasion, from Europe and Asia on-line.

  138. tommui July 11, 2011 12:55 pm

GIGI #119 – you access Mint or any other organization by using your password. I assume you do not leave your password on your laptop.

Make sure that your password is at least ten characters with capitals, lowercase, numbers and some allow symbols like @,&,* and so forth.

Ten because it becomes extremely difficult to break a ten-character password and for an explanation, ask Jason or one of our more math-adept persons!

Strange that a player can’t transfer from a non-scholarship to a scholarship football program without losing a year

IF the Allowance to Transfer without sitting out a year for “NON-Recruited” walk-ons, (similar to our SMU Transfer)

were extended to “recruited / invited walk-ons” …

(Conjecturing), wouldn’t that allow BIG Money schools to stow/stock-pile athletes at a smaller or sister school (“Let’s start a non-scholarship “JV Football League” @ Leeward, Honolulu, Kapiolani CC !?) … like they used to do with their JV Programs ?

Some schools routinely draw 30k+ for their spring games (Nebraska, Florida come to mind).

Yep, only two seasons a year in some places…Football and Spring Football!

  161. A-joe July 11, 2011 3:48 pm

Wow! Exceptionally slow day for sports on SA website. Does the sports department have Monday off?

  162. RedZone July 11, 2011 3:51 pm

Alabama had 92,000 at their spring game.

  163. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2011 3:52 pm

It seems that UH feels it needs the sideshows to encourage people to attend the Warrior Bowl.

    Other places, it’s: There’s a game, let’s go.

Without the giveaways or autograph sessions, the turnout at UH would be low.

  164. GoodLookingPake July 11, 2011 3:52 pm

    #156…Al…

What happens to the (3) scholarships…

  165. Laura July 11, 2011 3:55 pm

ST, are those other Spring games a scrimmage, or an actual game? That could make a big difference, in attendance.

  166. RedZone July 11, 2011 3:58 pm

If they had spring games with other schools the draw would be huge.

  167. al July 11, 2011 3:59 pm

glp…it would be up to gibber.

    a. he could award a walk on

    b. he could bring in a late signee

    c. he could save it for next year since he has only one available (zane johnson’s)

his bringing in three late walk ons could have been insurance policies just in case.

there’s also the vander joachim situation.

  168. al July 11, 2011 4:01 pm

can you imagine 92,000 attending a spring game times say at a cheap rate of $20 per person?

that would pay for charter flights and the hc’s salary.

  169. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2011 4:02 pm

Saw this fast guy running routes today..

    He made some nice catches.

Turns out it was Cav’s son, who will be a high school senior this year.

On the plus side, Jeremy Higgins and Cayman Shutter were making some nice throws.

  170. al July 11, 2011 4:03 pm

i could see the spring game drawing more if it were just that…a real game.

however, we don’t do it like that and basically it is a practice with a very limited controlled scrimage.at best.

if more were at stake, it would draw if say the starting quarterback’s decision hinges upon the spring game for example.

  171. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2011 4:04 pm

Don’t think they’re allowed spring games against other schools.

Besides, they don’t want to reveal their plays — and players — to other schools.

  172. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2011 4:05 pm

I think the purists would enjoy watching a scrimmage or practice.

There’s a lot to learn during these events.

  173. al July 11, 2011 4:05 pm

cav’s son, not an olineman has shown some interest in becoming a warrior. hmmm.

  174. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2011 4:08 pm

    You’re dreaming.

Besides, hard to leave when an OSU assistant coach gave his wife a kidney.

  175. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2011 4:09 pm

Mater Dei was second by a missed two point conversion. They have a bevy of big fast receivers, active DB’s and a Junior QB who will do well. Best thrower I saw was Oaks Christian’s QB

    Lots of scouts there

gigi, by just standing around in soccer, your team probably was not that successful. There are a lot to do “off” the ball. Closing spaces, opening spaces on offense, picking up or marking a man, creating lanes so ball can go through, channeling, and many, many more.

  189. gigi-hawaii July 11, 2011 4:54 pm

A few years ago, UH had a spring game at Aloha Stadium. How many people did they draw? I remember one team won when Aaron Kia lined up as a tackle eligible and caught the game winning pass. I forget how many people at the game, but I know the side of the stadium that I sat on, at least the bottom was full. Forget if they opened both sides of the stadium.

  192. papajoe2 July 11, 2011 5:02 pm

#190 too bad. The USA-Brazil game was very exciting. Can over 1B people in the world be wrong about soccer? If you learn the game, strategies, etc., then it could be another avenue for your entertainment. If not, then not.

As I’ve mentioned several times on the WB, I feel we need to get Inoke groomed to take over if Rolo ever takes off. The good thing is that Coach Mack sees Inoke as up and coming football coach.

Having already “lost” DeShawn, i’m praying we don’t lose even one out of the three; although it’s starting to sound like two out of three might not be so bad — Stevens, Dillon & Blakes would make a Big Difference in our Front-line Strength, esp. with the Vander ‘Situation’ —

Does ANYBODY Know when the Angola National Team Plays or COULD “Qualify as Africa’s Best” Team ?

    *Tate Forcier Tweets*

Just thought I’d list some of Tate’s recent twitter posts for those who haven’t visited his page.

July 7: Cant wait to visit Hawaii. Great coaches, great offense, great program. Its gonna be awesome meeting some islanders!

July 7: Its going good man. Setting up my visit with Hawaii now. Cant wait to get down there an meet everyone. Hawaii would be fun!

July 7: It will be an official… Ive been talking to coach Rolovich a lot and I really like him!

  205. Curt July 11, 2011 5:32 pm

If Mouse retires, do we bring on Inoke or do we bring in Stuzman or Lelie? I would bring in Inoke as WR coach to immediately begin the grooming process. We can always bring in Stuz, Lelie, or someone else later.

The 2006 team, in my opinion, is the best Warrior football team.

  207. Curt July 11, 2011 5:35 pm

It sure sounds like Tate’s interested. Question is: Will Mack and Rolo be interested after the visit?

  208. RedZone July 11, 2011 5:36 pm

If we had to bring in a former player to be OC I would pick Colt.

  209. Curt July 11, 2011 5:38 pm

If Mack likes what he sees, will he make a walk-on or scholarship offer?

  210. kawika49 July 11, 2011 5:40 pm

#208 A little more seaoning would help. Great players, very rarely make good Coaches. When I was in HS Ron Marciel came to SLC, and turned it around. Not a great player, but brought other qualities at the time, that started to change the direction of Coaching and conditioning at SLC and in the ILH.

  211. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 5:40 pm

    #197,

Yeah getting Inoke as familiar with the OC position would always be a plus. Hopefully this isn’t something we have to worry for a while though.

If Rolovich were to leave within the next 2-3 years and Mouse is gone next year…I don’t know what we would do. Could Inoke jump in that quickly? Maybe, maybe not. It’s huge shoes to fill for sure. I would think that we would probably have to find a new offensive (and oc) if it were too soon.

  212. d1shima July 11, 2011 5:44 pm

GA to OC is quite a leap

Coach Ault takes a “voluntary” salary reduction…

According to a school press release obtained by College Football Talk, Ault will “voluntarily incur a 4.8 percent salary reduction on the portion of his salary funded through the State of Nevada’s budget allocation to the University.”

Nevada Wolf Pack head coach Chris Ault sits on the shoulders of his players after the NCAA college football game in celebration of his 200th win. (AP Photo)

Under his current contract, Ault, as of July 1, would have made $476,065. However, with the salary reduction for fiscal year 2012, he will make $40,956 less – $435,119 – of which $158,131 represents state funds.

    D1,

what is your favorite offensive system, excluding RnS if its your favorite?

  216. al July 11, 2011 5:49 pm

    eagle…this is from dayton morinaga.

?Here is my understanding of Vander Joaquim’s situation:

He is currently training/competing with Angola’s national team. There is still one more series of roster cuts that needs to made. If Vander is not selected to the national team, he will return to Hawaii.

If he does make the team, they will play in an Olympic qualifying tournament in August. If Angola wins that tournament, they will qualify for the 2012 Olympics and Vander may be asked to stay with them to train.

If Angola does not win the qualifying tournament, Vander should have time to return to UH for fall semester.

Don’t know how good Angola is in comparison with other African teams, but they basically have to be the best country there to make the Olympics.

Stay tuned. Who would have thought Hawaii fans would become so interested in the results of Angola?

  217. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 11, 2011 5:50 pm

i wonder how much longer Coach Grumpy wants to continue coaching at Nevada.

  218. Kevin July 11, 2011 5:53 pm

The proof is right before your eyes, the the WORLD views soccer as a big BIG spectator sport and calls it the “WORLD’s GAME”, then MAJORITY WINS.

Now, I don’t watch soccer, but I think any sports fan can appreciate the athleticism involved.

We here in America essentially view things of all sorts as “weird” or “odd” if we don’t commercialize it here. What is our national population? 311,000,000? Out of a billion, that’s like what? 30% and out of 7 BILLION that’s like what? 4%. So to us, and MYSELF included, we are conditioned in our own thinking that 4% of the GLOBAL population has the final say in what is deemed “real” sports?

Before some roll their eyes and I get a political label like a liberal or whatever, my point is, fact is fact, but I embrace it. We’re a bunch of cockya$$ sports fans when the REALITY of it is we are in the minority.

7 billion people is a lot, despite what the TV and our society teaches us.

At one time, it was proven that the earth revolves around the sun, NOT the other way around.

I won’t spin my views, I am an American sports fan and I acknowledge that we as a sports society are ARROGANT as hell, but while others are ashamed to admit it, I AM PROUD OF THAT because it is who I am and we should all embrace it, but don’t B.S. yourselves into completely believing your own kaka don’t stink. Kaka is supposed to stink.

“(Athletic director) Glenn Nitta gave me a lot of leeway to change things to make them work. My goal is still to be a college coach. If someone asks me next year to be a receivers coach, I’ll do that. I’ve got dreams and goals.”

Idaho Coach Robert Akey’s idea of expansion…

“I would like to see some strong football schools come into it. It needs to happen. We need to strengthen our conference, and we need to do it with football schools, because we’re obviously losing a couple more at the end of this season. I wish they would let me have an opinion about this. Football coaches, we don’t get to do this. … What I think would be awesome would be if the survivors of the WAC Conference and the Mountain West would come together, I think that would be a 14-team deal in between the Mountain WAC, or whatever you would call those deals, you would have the best football on this side of the country.”

  254. Curt July 11, 2011 7:10 pm

Lelie definitely has great experience having played in the pros. Arceneaux has varied experiences at the high school and collegiate levels. From coach Mack’s perspective, he probably wants the best all-around candidate. Two important keys to me are 1) a strong (Bess-like) work ethic and 2) great leadership skills. So, who would that be?

Had to chime in on soccer. If you understand it, it is enjoyable to watch, lot of creative fluidity & skill to the game. This is even at the youth & high school level. Yes, it can be viewed as boring as very little scoring between evenly matched teams. Played & coached a lot. The league & teams I coached, there is no standing around; boys orgirls.

Only standing around would be in beginning AYSO where little kids are just learning, some even like to pick the grass. If it is in high school as mentioned previously standing around means the team was not that good and the coach did not know what they were doing. Please don’t “dis” soccer. Recommend you watch some of the Premiership highlight goals on cable, kinda like watching Michael Jordan create on the hardwood, only its harder.

As The Blog Host has stated there’s probably nothing more tedious than watching an NFL game live.

  282. Laura July 11, 2011 8:36 pm

They should change the game of soccer and make it like water polo. Now that is an exciting sport, lots of scoring and physical play.

  283. papajoe2 July 11, 2011 8:46 pm

Football is a totally different sport from soccer. In soccer you don’t have timeouts or time to huddle up. If you know a little about the game then it could be very enjoyable. I could see why the rest of the world could think that American football is boring.

As The Blog Host has stated there’s probably nothing more tedious than watching an NFL game live.

That’s why when the NFL network shows reruns of the games, it doesn’t show the huddles, extra points, kick-offs, etc unless there’s some excitement around those things. Games only run about an hour and a half.

Soccer is like a basketball game in which goal tending is legal. It would mean a very low scoring and boring game.

Soccer is a game in which you have 90 minutes of frantic running around and not much happening.

This season we’ll see how well the younger coaches can pick up the slack… if Mouse can sit back and enjoy the game more and coach less, then that will be one less thing to be concerned about. I really don’t see Mouse hanging around after this season so hopefully the assistant coaches will have picked up the reads and theory well enough to coach it convincingly. Maybe Mouse will go needle Glanville up in Tennessee after the season ends.

When I was around 11 or 12 and just getting into sports, I never did care for soccer and hockey. Soccer I thought was boring, both sports I didn’t get. (Although I did enjoy the Mighty Ducks movies.) Football, baseball, basketball—I liked those because I understood the rules and the strategy.

Now that I’m older, I find I’m a lot more tolerant of those sports. I don’t go out of my way to watch them, but if there’s nothing else on TV, I’ll leave it on and watch a little while I do some computer work. Same goes for a lot of sports I never watched when I was younger. I sure as heck don’t understand a lot of things, but once I started picking up on some of the nuances, my appreciation of those games grew.

    #294,

Yeah I heard the show this morning. I didn’t know what I was listening to for a while because it sounded like just Mack talking (which it was lol) for like 15 minutes. Bobby just came on at the end and said they gotta go. haha. Brother can talk.

  304. LizKauai [iMac] m/ July 11, 2011 11:27 pm

gigi- it wasn’t just the money. JJ still loves and helps Hawaii.

Sometimes we just have to fumble along…

Nitey nite and Tsweet Warrior Dreams!

  305. al July 11, 2011 11:34 pm

fumble…more like because of the fumbler.

  306. SteveM July 12, 2011 12:42 am

I wonder what the future history will finally reveal about JJ leaving Hawaii? I think it was for the challenge of picking up a near winless football and taking them to championships while further expounding the Run ‘n Shoot.

Seems he did it at Hawaii with a shoestring budget and mediocre support. Now he had a chance to do it all again with great facilities, much support from admin, boosters, and fans. More $$$ for everything. He could also effect positive change in hawaii…if getting a sad sack AD fired and the people of Hawaii uniting in anger to support the team is considered positive.

I predict if JJ ever takes SMU to BCS game, he will not stay too many years longer. The challenge of resurrecting the most penalized and downtrodden team in football history is complete. Then we’ll see if JJ returns to Hawaii in “retirement”.

Yeah, “retired” like Mouse Davis and Dick Tomey. 🙂

I do not think JJ left for SMU just for the money (for himself).

  307. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 12, 2011 12:59 am

    #306,

I wonder too if JJ would have left regardless of what that AD did. I also think of SMU goes BCS bowling (or whatever it is called at that time) that he probably will not be staying very long.

Who knows, we might have 2 coaches who have impacted Hawaii football “retire” at the same time hahah.

    SteveM

If I can get through a whole bunch of paperwork for my 2 pm meeting before my 10 am meeting, I’ll drop by the CC; however, I won’t be eating so there’s no need to count me. I have to be very careful about eating while the sun is up – especially when I have to attend meetings and drive – because I cannot control my falling asleep even though I drink upwards of 90 ounces of heavy-duty coffee (extra shot) every day.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/20110712_Finally_Ostrowski_can_say_hes_a_starter.html

Ostrowski says he wants to weigh at about 175; hope that’s good enough to stand the rigors of a 13 (14) game season.

  361. Cheap NFL jerseys August 9, 2011 11:34 pm

Suppose that you purchased an nfl jersey, it’s not a imitation jersey, not a youth jersey, not a women jersey edition, but an authentic jersey. Here is the instructions of cleansing: Hand-wash your jersey. It is encouraged by official operators to use a non-coarse, color-fast detergent to clean jerseys. Woolite fits this description. Rinse the jersey carefully and deal with the suds. Check your jersey whether the soap is out; it should have a very pleasant and fresh smell. Rinse the jersey again in the color-fast detergent if all the stains have not come out. A second washing will remove all stains except something permanent. Rinse thoroughly. Air dry and never put it in the dryer which would smash up the numbers, letters and symbols. For low-cost nfl jerseys you may care less. When you have ncaa jerseys wholesale quantity and wash them, don’t put them together. Clean them seperately, one by one. That works on throwback jerseys too.
