(carried over from last blog “thread” on the topic)

I think it’s apparent that UH softball and the other non-revenue sports are budgeted to the point where it shouldn’t effect the student athlete’s performance in the classroom and on the field of competition. Equipment and access to the proper alloted facilities are taken care of. The extras like bracelets, banquets, etc are just “pluses” and that’s what booster clubs are for.

All of these things are a choice and not a true necessity, BUT to enhance the student athlete’s experience at UH, I think, in a way, it is a necessity of sorts and those that want to contribute in the efforts should.

It wasn’t that long ago that even most of us felt personally “shafted” that the 2007 WAC softball/super regional team almost walked away with nothing, but that’s just me talking… or maybe others too. 😎

I can see where parties for a student athletes could be deemed inappropriate “gifts”, etc. The booster home party was interesting to hear.

I have wondered if a party/banquet–anywhere– would be OK if the athletes paid the full price to attend? Yes, I know they are the honored guests… but … is it OK from a compliance point of view?

If so, can they attend a potluck tailgate party if they brought suitable compensation/consideration to the event? In this case, some food.

There is an interesting side story with BSU’s 2011 season opener on ESPN.

The Broncos added a season opener at Mississippi (“Ole Miss”) on Thursday. That gives them a 13-game schedule with a payday game, seven home games and no Football Championship Subdivision opponents — an ideal setup for producing revenue.

The Broncos play home games against Utah, Tulsa and Wyoming and road games at Toledo and Mississippi next year.

They get Miami (Ohio) and BYU at home and Oregon State and Utah on the road in 2012.

ESPN helped arrange the one-game contract, which guarantees Boise State a $900,000 payout — the most in Ole Miss history. The game will be shown on national TV, Bleymaier said.

Adding intrigue to the game is the Rebels’ coach — Houston Nutt, who coached Boise State in 1997.

“We wanted an attractive guarantee game that would attract national attention,” Bleymaier said.

Nutt was the Arkansas coach when the Broncos lost to the Razorbacks in 2000 and 2002.

The newspaper for Boulder, Colorado interviewed the Pac-10 Commissioner about Pac-10 expansion, and the Pac-10 says they won’t wait for the Big 10 to act before they expand.

We’ve read and heard a lot about other conferences waiting to see what the Big Ten does in its evaluation of conference expansion, but it’s unlikely you would be courting many of the same schools if both conferences expand. Could the Pac-10 move first?

“I can’t speak to how other conferences are thinking about it. We, starting from last summer, talked about this expansion analysis we were going to be doing. So we’re on course with the same objectives and the same time frames that I talked about nine months ago. Frankly, nothing has changed for us. We’re going about our work analytically, strategically and deliberately and nothing has changed. I don’t see what the Big Ten does that is going to tangibly affect us or our analysis of options. It may be different for other conferences or schools, but we’re looking at expansion to the extent it could add value for our conference, and that really hasn’t changed.”

So it is inaccurate to say the Pac-10 is waiting on the Big Ten to do something?

“That would certainly be inaccurate. I don’t know when the Big Ten might decide what they’re going to do, but it’s not going to affect our timing. We could very well decide before they decide. They might decide before us. I don’t know and I don’t think it matters in terms of what we’re going to do. I think their analysis and what they’re going to do affects a different part of the country than what we’re looking at.”

  39. midori7 May 14, 2010 10:21 am

The Big 12 Commissioner is upset with all of this talk about school leaving, so they will apparently make everyone reveal their intentions when they meet in less than 3 weeks.

On Wednesday, Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe was a guest on “Between the Lines” with Kevin Kietzman. He was asked about his thoughts on the flirtations with the Big Ten.

“I think the Big Ten, that either through the Conference or its members,” Mr. Beebe said, “have probably been in communication with others in the country that they have an interest with, just to send out feelers and get responses back.”

Part of having schools buy-in means finding out exactly where these institutions stand on moving in or out.

“We need to come to terms with that. We’re going to head into our meetings in Kansas City and I think we need to have a very frank conversation about where we’re going and who’s going to be on the plane when we take off.” Mr. Beebe said. “I will be very direct and talk about that with our membership and want to find out. It would be a shame, given that all boats have risen with this tide that’s been created in the Big 12, for anybody to think they’re going to have a better future somewhere else.”

  41. Garret May 14, 2010 10:24 am

However, the Big 10 might actually *double* their TV money after expansion…$40 million per school?

“With the network, there’s a different element. It changes the dynamics,” he said. “The broader it is distributed, the more value it has. We have eight states. With expansion, you could have nine.”

    Or 10 or 11 or 12 …

If the Big Ten expands and chooses the right schools, conference officials have seen estimates of television revenues doubling by 2015-16.

More teams not only would bring wider BTN distribution and the potential for a conference championship game in football (worth upward of $15 million), but also would mean “increased inventory” in TV parlance — from 44 conference football games to 56 (with 14 teams) or 64 (with 16 teams).

Note that when the Big 12 takes in new teams (they seem to already know they will be losing teams–probably Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska), they will NOT take teams from Texas. They are looking for teams in different states to expand their TV market…I’d guess BYU, Colorado State (or Air Force), and Memphis or Louisville.

The comments are the first made publicly by Beebe acknowledging the Big Ten’s pursuit of Big 12 institutions and Beebe continued by sharing his thoughts about the future of the Big 12, even if Missouri and Nebraska leave.

“I’ve thought about replacements, sure,” said Beebe. When asked if those possible replacement schools might be in Texas, Beebe said, “I’m not sure how any other institutions in the states we already have schools would add. I think we’ve captured the markets in those states.”

ESPN and that Fresno site that rog linked to both say that BSU going to the MWC is a done deal…no surprise if that is true. One interesting thing is that the Fresno media broke the story…with Fresno State and Nevada being mentioned as possible MWC schools in some things that I have read in the past year.

If the MWC loses 2-3 schools, they need to invite schools with high computer ranking results over the past 2 years in order to keep their shot for the BCS AQ status. Even if they lose BYU and Utah, adding BSU would actually satisfy 2 of the 3 BCS AQ criteria for conferences. The only other thing they would need is to get their average football computer ranking to go up a little. That means that any school with a high enough computer ranking would be a target…Fresno State, Nevada, and Houston come to mind. If they could wait one more year, UH would have a chance to get their computer ranking up…but the ranking the last 2 years was so low that UH would need to be top 20 or better this season to be close to the MWC average.

  84. Slugger May 14, 2010 11:10 am

    Oh, yah…

    Wake up, ST!

No more cosmic bowling for you….

  85. Garret May 14, 2010 11:11 am

    Buffoman,

The short-term good news is that any school leaving would leave behind ALL of the NCAA basketball money and ALL of the BCS bowl money for the 2010 season. So, if BSU got to a BCS bowl this season then they would not get any of the profit from the bowl, just the money for their expenses.

That is, unless the new rule that Karl Benson got passed last year will give any WAC team $3 million for their BCS bowl no matter what their expenses would be. Then, BCS would keep all of their BCS money that they would have gotten from the WAC anyway. I hope that Benson would have included a clause in the WAC’s new rule that would take away the profit if a school left the WAC…but I never thought that Benson planned well for contingencies so I’m not confident of that.

  86. Matt May 14, 2010 11:12 am

  90. Garret May 14, 2010 11:16 am

    Buffoman,

The other piece of good news today is that the Big 12 made it clear that they aren’t going to invite any Texas team to join them (too bad for TCU, Houston, etc.), which means that they will probably invite one of the MWC teams from Colorado (probably Colorado State). That opens up another slot in the MWC…

Congrats to the Wahine Softball team for setting a new NCAA HR record.. not an easy feat.. and definitely a team effort! Amazing! 14 runs in one inning? Aiyah! GO WAHINE!

  105. Stretch May 14, 2010 11:40 am

BTW – did anyone notice the shirt that Wisneski is wearing as first base coach?? That design sure looks familiar, similiar to something that AJoe came up with!! SWEET!!

  106. papajoe2 May 14, 2010 11:42 am

looks like this may be the 21st softbow game ended by the mercy rule. i’m sorry but at what inning does the rule take effect, 5th or 6th? add those innings to the games the the softball bows played and if anybody is down playing the home record they must be committed.

  107. Slugger May 14, 2010 11:42 am

    16-0! Mercy!

Mercy Rule takes place after 5 innings if any team is up by more than 7.

  110. Jack Flash May 14, 2010 11:45 am

    16-0? – WOW!

  111. Matt May 14, 2010 11:46 am

Middle of the 5th. 3 outs to go.

  112. papajoe2 May 14, 2010 11:47 am

i noticed that in the 3rd inning, coach Coolen played it a bit safe on the basepaths. i thought the runner on 3rd could have scored on the wild pitch and at least 2 more could have scored but was held up at third on bad throws from the outfield. no matter as all of those runners scored anyway. i guess that’s why the coach is coach of the year and they are so successful. GO WAHINE!!!

  113. Slugger May 14, 2010 11:48 am

    16-1

  122. papajoe2 May 14, 2010 12:07 pm

not feeling too good about all this movement within the major colleges. i have a feeling we will be left out again. we recovered well from the last shakeup, but i’m not too sure about this one. PAC 10 should expand to 16 teams also including UH (just dreaming). Hawaii is always a mystical place for mainlanders, but, bottom line is we have to win. how many big games in football and basketball that was on national tv that we either lost or worst yet, got blown out.

  126. Pomai May 14, 2010 12:13 pm

    Please excuse this little rant.

This has been on my mind awhile an “not again” was kind of like the last straw, so I just wanted to get this off my chest. NA WAHINE SOFTBALL TEAM

In 2007 when they won the WAC title it came to the publics attention that they had no money for any individual awards for the girls. I decided on my own to see if I could raise enough money to purchase bracelets for them. The more I worked on it the more I got involved, but being on the east coast made it a little difficult but I was blessed with a lot of good friends both here in the Islands and on the mainland an we did in fact raise enough money to see that the bracelets were bought.

The more I was exposed to the team the more respect I had for them, the more I saw what dedication it took on their part to be a student athlete. It made me feel good that I could in some way give back to the girls who gave to me. During this process of raising the funds I received some negativity from some folks but I just threw it off.

Well here we are again with the girls deserving some kind of recognition for what they have accomplished and for what they gave us fans. So once again I will try to raises the funds to cover the cost of bracelets, but already the negativity has started. I would like to say to all of the people if you feel that you don’t want to support the NA WAHINE that’s fine just say “no I don’t want to donate” heck I’m a big boy I can take it, but what I can’t take is the questioning of why I am doing this or better why are we as a group of sports loving fans doing this, it’s because we care about this peculiar team at this peculiar time. So I would appreciate all those who feel we shouldn’t be doing this or questioning why we should be doing this, or why isn’t the school doing this, PLEASE keep it to your self I myself don’t want to hear it. I know it is selfish of me because It makes me feel good to do it.

Thanks all for letting me vent and thanks for being TSAIKOS

  127. Ralph May 14, 2010 12:23 pm

    Wipeout!
    One more time tomorrow!

Do we need to lose the first game tomorrow
so we can play an extra game to extend the home run hitting record?

  130. Slugger May 14, 2010 12:32 pm

    Pomai,

You just have to let the negative comments go and do what you need to do. Maybe we could get Amanda to explain the rules to ST & have him post it as a blog entry. Now that we have a Tsaiko Foundation account, it’ll be easy to collect the money for the bracelets. Amanda did say that you can’t target a donation to the Foundation for a ‘specific’ thing on your check, but include a note & they will know what it’s for. Ex. “To: UH Foundation”, “Memo: Softball”, your Note: “Please put the funds toward the Softball WAC championship bracelets.” You can’t write: “To: UH Foundation-Softball bracelets”.

ST ~ Is that possible? Perhaps we could have Amanda on a Warrior Beat show? with JD or Don Weir or ???

  131. Kekoa May 14, 2010 12:38 pm

Cool & Da Gang! Blow out daBullfrogsBulldogs!

What a blast watching this well-oiled machine crank out da runs. Pomai, we will do what we can to honor these young ladies when the time comes. No worries. Since when do we listen to conventional wisdom? We just get ‘er done. Let the naysayers wring their hands and tell us it’s not possible…yeah, right.

  132. Stretch May 14, 2010 12:45 pm

Slugger and others – I think if you put in the memo section of a check, “Tsaiko Athletic Fund”, it will go into our account. It is a lot easier to go online and make a donation using a credit card. From there, I will call JD and instruct him how to use the money.

  133. Palolo May 14, 2010 12:45 pm

Hawaii should make it’s own conference. UNLV, Nevada Reno, Fresno St., San Jose St., San Diego St., Boise St., Idaho St., and Hawaii. All the other universities can find a home in the old wac and mwc. Easier on travel and better rivals then the present wac.

its the polite way of not trying to run up the score.

i was hoping that he would empty the bench in the fifth and insert parnaby as well. i guess he didn’t want to take any chances. i also felt that the reason he left his starters and ricketts in was that they looked a bit rusty yesterday after that week off so he wanted to keep an edge for tomw.

  136. al May 14, 2010 1:11 pm

boise st is gone. you can’t blame them. its all about the moolah. remember that they have a small stadium which limits their gate and concession revenues. therefore, getting a bigger piece of the bcs pie and mwc money is something that hawaii would jump at the chance for.

only sad part is that we were just getting to that rivalry stage with them.

  137. chawan_cut May 14, 2010 1:15 pm

    great win!
hope the basebows can continue it on into tonight and the wahine can pick it up and finish it tomorrow!

  138. al May 14, 2010 1:15 pm

    so did you hear?

that we are expecting a d1 transfer in the fall for our newly fuel injected men’s basketball team.

  139. Stretch May 14, 2010 1:16 pm

A few years back when Pomai was working to get donations to take care of the bracelets for the softball girls, my initial thought were that UH should pay for these bracelets. I didn’t think fans should be the one paying to recognize the girls. That was when the economy was good and figured Hermie & Co was just trying to get the fans to pay for something that they could do themselves. I am glad that Pomai stuck to his plan and got it done. If we waited for Hermie, they would have NEVER received anything.

Too bad there is not another home game where more “donations” can me made into the box with everyone knowing that they were giving money to pay for the bracelets.

  140. A-House May 14, 2010 1:29 pm

    ok, al:

since ST is not the men’s BB beat writer, are you going to tell us or must we sit, rub our hands nervously, or not even give it a thought since any transfer must sit out a year OR, did the fella get a release that makes him eligible to play in 2010? or, are you saying that someone who had commited to a D1 school, got a release, and now will sign with UH? – if so, i hope it is Andre from Nebraska.

is the “big bird” still sitting on the wire or fallen to the ground?

    do i win the prize?

does this mean that there are no more avialable shcolarships for 2010?

  141. Kazz May 14, 2010 1:39 pm

This is becoming the norm for the Wahine. Scary huh? Well, maybe for the competition.

One done, hopefully one more to go.

Margie Wright is ticked off and while FSU is not hosting this tournament, they do feel the WAC softball tournament is THEIR territory and they have history on their side. I’m not being pessimistic, just honest and trying to send “even-leveled” vibes to our ladies in Green and White.

The rest of the day belongs to our Wahine to enjoy, relax, lament, and recover for tomorrow because Fresno State WILL be ready and I have NO doubt they will return to fight for the WAC tourney title.

  142. Kazz May 14, 2010 1:44 pm

    Pomai,

    DEY U GO!!!

I wrote yesterday that we are not a charitable group, just a bunch of people donating time and money to things we want.

It’s our right to do what we want when we want with our “resources”.

  144. (Jesse)James May 14, 2010 1:55 pm

    Slugger #132 and Stretch #134…

Stretch is correct. When I first inquired about setting up the Tsaiko account a couple of years ago, I was informed that the easiest way to do thing was to just donate the money to the account (with the UH Foundation taking approximately 3% of the donation as a fee) and once the money was there, to specify one or two people as contact points and have them notify the UH Athletic Department/Foundation Rep. on how the money was to be spent.

Pomai…no regrets. It was awesome what you did a few years ago and I know the Wahine appreciated it. Keep it up, I’m glad you got the ball rolling again.

    GO WARRIORS/GO WAHINE

For those who missed the softball game, which will NOT be retelecast, it was amazing how the Wahine bats came alive in the top of the 3rd inning and just kept going.

Jessica Iwata hit the first home run, which set the new NCAA record for homeruns in a season, and Kelly Majam followed with her “grand slam” to the opposite field, against the wind, and cleard the left field with room to spare.

Unfortunately for Tracy Yoshikawa, her slam to nearly dead center field was held up by the wind (like a golf ball) and caught by the center fielder just short of the fence. Otherwise, UH would have recorded 2 grand slams in the same inning.

Looking for the same in the championship game Saturday morning!!!

Someone who shall remain unnamed just texted me in bitterness…

Last time I checked all the other WAC teams played or are playing on NMSU’s softball field, the SAME field as the Wahine. Those other teams are MORE than welcome to hit their share of home runs. No one is stopping them. 🙄

I know I’m beating a dead horse, but I don’t expect much news in the mainstream softball media saying much about the Wahine breaking the NCAA Home Run record for softball.

All wouldn’t be lost though. At least that gentleman Kyle Doperalski will be calling the action on 1420am. I know it’s been said already, but this guy is pretty good AND he does his homework as he can pronounce the names PROPERLY!!! He also called the SJSU game right down the middle too. Someone in media (UH Media person?) needs to tell the WAC site webmaster that they have an incorrect score listed for this morning’s game.

    Day 3
    Hawai’i 16, Fresno State 2
In the top of the third inning, Hawai`i ‘s Jessica Iwata hit a home run to give the Rainbow Wahine 135 on the season, breaking the previous NCAA record of 134 set by Arizona in 2009. Kelly Majam hit a grand slam later in the inning to give UH 136 on the year. It was part of a 14-run third for UH en route to the 16-2 five-inning win that sent the Rainbow Wahine to the championship game tomorrow.

    Did I miss something? …

Hope Jack Flash & keeds are enjoying the game this afternoon!

Yup! It is easier for people to donate online directly into the Tsaiko account. I was just reiterating the info about checks that I got from Amanda yesterday. People who don’t know about us would just donate directly into the Softball team’s Foundation account.

There is a box for any notes you’d like to add when making an online donation. It’s in that field you would note to the Foundation office what you’d like the money to go to if there’s something specific going on.

    GO WAHINE!!!

Bows in fifth place, not impossible to reach 4th place by next week. Downside, the WAC top teams have less than stellar won lost record, looks like the WAC tournament winner will be the only rep to the NCAA.

Awww. RK called Waimea “Waiakea” in the D2 softball highlights.

Congrats to the Menehune, tho. See you next year!

  204. Slugger May 14, 2010 11:09 pm

    WAC Softball – Amateur analysis:

Out of 3 days of play, and a total of 9 games:
    UH = 8 HR
    Boise = 8 HR
    LaTech = 3 HR
    SJSU = 3 HR
    NMSU = 2 HR
    Fresno = 0 HR

    I don’t think it’s the altitude…

  205. Curt May 14, 2010 11:32 pm

The Wahine got their 8 HRs in only two games.

  206. Curt May 14, 2010 11:44 pm

    Al,

I hope you’re right that we get that MBB transfer…with a release. Doesn’t that take up all of our scholarships for this coming season?

Supposedly, PG Anthony Salter is on his recruiting visit this weekend. I wasn’t exactly thrilled with his myspace site comments. Isn’t the deadline tomorrow (Saturday) for signing?

  207. Slugger May 14, 2010 11:52 pm

The fallacy about hitting more homeruns at altitude is evident in the number of HRs hit by each team. If it were true that the ‘thin air’ of NM is conducive to hitting balls out of the park, all of the teams should have many homers in their stats. UH hit 8 homeruns because they are great athletes, not because they play at sea level & now they are playing at 3,900 ft. elevation. It’s says something about Fresno St. getting to Saturday’s game without a HR. They scratched out runs in other ways.

  208. Slugger May 14, 2010 11:58 pm

    Night!

  209. LizKauai (iPhone) May 14, 2010 11:59 pm

When I go to high altitudes, I get nosebleeds and can’t run very far without passing out. No energy to hit a homer.
    But that’s just me.
Nitey nite and Tsweet Softball Dreams!

  210. koakane May 15, 2010 12:07 am

lets keep it basic all, elevation and altitude is a moot point simply because the wahines are a good hitting team. they see ball and hit ball. only deterrent is a super pitcher.

congrats to wahines and warriors on their victories. also beeg aloha and job well done to all the graduates tomorrow whether it was on the playing field or in the classroom. walk proudly

  211. papajoe2 May 15, 2010 12:11 am

34.29 cents for every dollar goes to education in the california lottery. the last winner got $266 million. i think about 54 cents per dollar goes to prizes. the rest goes to administrator fees, places that sold the winning tickets, etc. what has this to do with UH sports? if we made the lottery in Hawaii and made the educational system 100% beneficiaries of the lottery, it will solve a lot of our education woes, including UH as they are a state run institution. i don’t agree with any other type of gambling, but a lottery ticket could be sold to tourists too.

  212. al May 15, 2010 12:14 am

these last three wins by the bows may have bought trap another year,

  213. al May 15, 2010 12:18 am

curt… those myspace comments are about two years old. the kid is a player. that guy with the tats is a famous recording artist i am told and not salter.

what little video is available of him…reminds me of tom henderson.

and about that transfer i am not alluding to any one prospect. don’t want to say much about the guy or we could lose him.

  214. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 12:21 am

Here’s the rule for why UH had 3 balls called after Melloh came back in the game. NCAA bylaws

    10.19 Warm-Up Pitches Allowed
10.19.1 At the beginning of each half-inning, the pitcher of record may throw not
more than five warm-up pitches. Play shall be suspended during this time.
10.19.2 After a pitching change, a relief pitcher may throw not more than five
    warm-up pitches.
Play shall be suspended during this time. A pitcher shall not
be allowed warm-up pitches if returning to pitch in the same half-inning.
    RULE 10 / PITCHING 135
EFFECT (10.19.1 to 10.19.2)—A ball shall be awarded to the first batter
faced for each excessive warm-up pitch.

10.19.3 A player other than the pitcher of record throws a warm-up pitch.
EFFECT—For a first violation, the umpire shall issue a warning to the
offending coach. Subsequent violation by the same team
shall result in ejection of the head coach.
10.19.4 After injury to a pitcher, the relief pitcher must be allowed adequate
time to warm up. Play shall be suspended during this time.
10.19.5 The pitcher shall be given adequate time to warm up after any
substantial delay caused by inclement weather, injury or delayed play
    by the umpire.

Because Melloh threw three warm up pitches, UH batter had 3 balls to begin with.

And pitchers who doesn’t play offense are normally called “flex” players based on the rule book.

    8.2.5.2 The starting flex, once
    replaced
    defensively, may
    re-enter one time.
    She may
return to the 10th position in
    the lineup and play defense
only, anywhere on the field; or
she may assume the position in
    the batting order occupied by
the DP or a substitute flex, and
    play both offense and defense.

  215. BleedGreen808 May 15, 2010 12:24 am

And here’s an explanation from UH.

And…if you were listening or watching the game back home, the reason Amanda Tauali`I started the at bat with three balls as the count, was because Bulldogs’ starter Morgan Melloh re-entered the game in the same inning she left and she threw warm-up pitches—which is illegal. So Tauali`i was given three balls for the three warm-up pitches Melloh threw

  220. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:05 am

Al UH is 26-22, 9-10 in the WAC with 5 regular season games on the docket. After last season’s 30-24 season followed by this year’s poor showing I don’t think the 3 wins helps secure Trap’s job, if anything, its the attendance over the last 2 seasons that might help him with a roll over. Didn’t bb lose scholarships due to a poor APR a couple of years ago?

  221. Ralph May 15, 2010 1:10 am

BG808 it’s these NCAA sb rules that drives papa Leahy nuts, can you imagine Santee explaining flex or designated player to him, the rules of substitution and re-entry that Coolen keeps using with pinch runners, when Katie in on base or he puts in a pinch hitter.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
