Warriors land JC receiver; QB delay

Terrance Polk, a wideout from Los Medanos College, told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a UH football scholarship.

Polk will have three years to play two seasons.

Here’s an old highlight video: Polk video.

* * * * *

Coach Chow said he will delay announcing a starting quarterback until later this week.

Jeremy Higgins and Sean Schroeder will split reps, although Higgins will take the first  snap in drills.

* * * * *

Will Gregory will not play this week after allegedly throwing two punches at a Boise State player this past weekend. It is effectively a suspension, but because of  UH procedures and paperwork and blah, blah, blah, it is not being called a “suspension.”

Best of luck to Higgins. Hope it’s at least closer in the end with him moving the ball more consistently and eating up the clock.

OK, I guess that would be a silly question since, if you did, you wouldn’t be on the blog.

  8. Will-I-Am November 12, 2012 8:31 am

I hope that gives a spark to the offense. I think our defense is getting better every game. I was really impressed with our D against Boise.

Did BSU have to punt more than us?

  9. Stephen Tsai November 12, 2012 8:32 am

Schroeder is not out of the mix for playing time. I think a change just needed to be made.

  10. Old School Dave November 12, 2012 8:32 am

1992 – Redshirt freshman Rodney Glover took over for injured QBs Ivin Jasper and Michael Carter at AFA and led them to a 6-3 victory. The same day hurricane Iniki slammed into Kauai and West Oahu.

Did the S/A Q Branch inform you of the glitch or somefin? Or Tsaiko/Tsaikette e-mails?

  13. Old School Dave November 12, 2012 8:40 am

I guess you could draw some comparisons to Dan Robinson and Sean Schroeder. Both were battered and beaten QBs in their junior seasons. OC Don Lindsey made Robinson, who was a dropback passer, into an option QB.

    Howzit, Gang!

Yes, aloha and mahalo nui to all fellow Vets!

We’ll see how things go with a new QB starter. We’ve all seen the energy level of backup QBs throughout the years, and how infectious they were to the rest of the team. Some of the constant mistakes don’t originate from the QB position, though. So, we’ll see… Will the team’s overall energy and demeanor change? I’m sure we’ve all experienced how a different leader can change the entire psyche of a group. Looking forward to progress.

  23. d1shima November 12, 2012 8:51 am

Also hope the opportunity comes to actually run a play from the oddball formation that got nixed by the false start.

    I’ll cheer if Higgins starts.

I like him as a QB.

I feel a bit bad for Schroeder, though, as that kid has given his all and gotten nothing but punishment and criticism in return. Hopefully this won’t be the end of the road for him.

But at the moment I feel Higgins is the superior choice to move our offense forward.

  27. Tazer November 12, 2012 8:59 am

Hope Schroeder gets to be a better Qb from this being on the sideline and learning what are his problems are and ask for help. And if Rolo can do it so can you. This should have been done couple games back.

Hi. The night of the game i came here and asked, any live stream? And real quick, someone posted a link. Just wanted to say mahalo. We moved to washington state and love it here… tho one of the things we miss is uh football and volleyball… always lurked here especially those two wonderful seasons with colt… my new love russell wilson reminds me of colt’s game. Tough season i know for our warriors… but its good to see all the faithful diehards here. Stay strong guys…. and thanks for all the dedication and aloha alwaus!

  29. kev-1 November 12, 2012 9:00 am

I’d like to see an all out competition between Shutter and Higgins. Shutter seems like he could be more elusive and mobile. Can anyone comment on that? I haven’t been fortunate enought to see him myself.

  30. Old School Dave November 12, 2012 9:00 am

O-Line has some bulk, but they lack mobility. Tackles are having major problems with speed rushers coming off at the ends. O-Line play needs to improve regardless of who is the QB. Scrambling QBs running for their lives make me nervous – Greg Alexander, Bryant Moniz, among others.

  31. Kevin November 12, 2012 9:01 am

I wouldnt feel too bad for Schroeder.

I mean he accomplished more than 99.9% of those that sit behind their computer making fun of him while they go thru their 5th Gout attack in a given week.

    Congrats to Higgins. Geev em!

  32. kev-1 November 12, 2012 9:02 am

I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way, but I see Schroeder more as a good back up QB.

Air Force should be a good test for Higgins. Falcons are very fast on the edges and quick shooting the gaps. Hope Higgin’s legs keeps him out of trouble.

Thank you to all the men and women in our armed services. Hope everyone has a great Veterans Day!

MattO: Pointing da green bottle label worked!! Higgins going start!

    Pomai: 28-27 Hawaii Warriors!

d1: With big winning margins heading into playoffs, Cats let Maika (Leleihua-All State) kick some extra points late. He was made captain two games ago in his senior campaign. Feel good story, cause that boy is popular among teammates.

ST: Now that QB situation in flux, and since you attend

  45. gobows November 12, 2012 9:29 am

#32 that’s what he was at duke. never played a snap in 3 years. and duke was in many blow outs. so he’s probably used to being on a terrible team.

i hope anyone (higgins, graves, shutter, the boy that runs to get the tee) but ss starts at qb for the 2 or 3 remaining home games. i would like to see a win against a d1 football team, even if it is unlv, south alabam, and temple. is it too late to get jared arakawa?

  46. Shoko November 12, 2012 9:29 am

Speaking of the Lakers, I wonder if Phil Jackson wanted part ownership the franchise as part of a deal to come back.

  47. koakane November 12, 2012 9:30 am

  48. Shoko November 12, 2012 9:32 am

While at Utah State, Higgin’s played backup to Diondre Borel. Believe he took a few snaps, but nothing meaningful. Big test for him this Friday.

  49. cocobean November 12, 2012 9:32 am

    Air Force is beatable.

The fans are tired of losing, the coaches are tired of losing. Most importantly the team is tired of losing. They’re the ones breaking their asses in practice and putting their health on the line in games. Losing takes a toll on your psyche. A seven game losing strike drains all positivity,

Hope the news about HIggins gives the team a jolt of positive energy. Hope he is the catalyst that gets the whole team moving forward.

I don’t expect HIggins to be a savior just expect him to do his job.

  50. koakane November 12, 2012 9:33 am

mahalo to coach chow for trying a new qb this weekend, give him a honest chance

  51. gobows November 12, 2012 9:36 am

#39 wonder if the lefty spin on the ball has something to do with it. didn’t he also drop one from higgins, did harding drop one too.

  52. gobows November 12, 2012 9:37 am

#46 didn’t magic have to give up his part ownership to coach the lakers?

  53. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 9:40 am

Can’t believe it took this long for Norm to make a change. Makes me really question him. I guess better late than never. But it was obvious to every fan that whether or not SS is the best practice player, his teammates were not responding to him at all in games. Need to win the backing and confidence in whole team or not gonna go very far. Very obvious that SS holds ball way too long and only now it’s being mentioned as an issue. Other weeks, excuses were blocking, getting knocked down too much, and WRs running wrong routes.

  54. Shoko November 12, 2012 9:43 am

    52. I dunno if Johnson did or didn’t, but there seems to be alot of speculation on why Jackson didn’t take the job. Thats if he was, indeed, offered the position as the media has stated.

  55. graham November 12, 2012 9:44 am

    Will Shutter get a chance?

  56. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 9:46 am

i love how chow says Higgins did his play against 2nd string players. Schroeder has been playin against 2nd string every week in the 2nd half.

at the very least, i think letting Higgins start will at least boost team morale.

thanks for killin our program chow.

  57. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 9:47 am

But of course I cannot, because both toes are swollen. Okay, you got me all wired up and I fell to the floor because I was so pissed off. The schedule for 210, NBCSPT at this writing (10:50am, 11/12/2012, HI time) has the “UH v. Boise St.” replay from 10a-12p . . . however, World Series of Bass is actually showing. Pro’ qualifying episode, seemingly. Oi.

Side note: Can’t stand Dan Patrick. Damn smiling fool.

  68. Huh? November 12, 2012 10:21 am

Regarding IMUA on back of jersey. Wouldn’t it make sense to put in front of jersey. IMUA means to push forward. Having it on the back, well…

  69. madeinhawaii November 12, 2012 10:27 am

We are now #119 our 124 teams in the FBS.

I wonder if there is a record on how far a team has fallen in one season?

  70. Postmanke November 12, 2012 10:30 am

It always hurts and stings when you bench a captain. All the hard work put in and still the team is going nowhere fast. Its more than hard work. At this point in the season doesn’t matter whose better to do the janitorial clean up of this mess. What the team needs is someone to rally around. Someone who can light a spark and have fun. Getting blown by 40 and still giving a fist pump? smiling and having fun?

While the captain patrolls the sidelines I think this new sailor can light a much needed spark to rally around. And throw your best at practice shit out the window.

  71. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 10:30 am

we’re basically screwed, i think chow is gonna kill our football program. and there wont be a savior this time around.

who woulda thought we should have just accepted mediocrity and stuck w mack.

  72. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 10:31 am

Schroeder was appointed as a captain by Chow, not his peers. im sure the rest of the team doesnt hate Schroeder, but i wonder how they feel about him being the coach’s pet?

  73. d1shima November 12, 2012 10:33 am

Nice comment by HC Chow on Inside Access about his conversation with Falemalu after the last game.

I believe he feels real compassion for his Seniors and wishes they were having a better season for their last go-round.

Comments that denigrate the team and their efforts would seem to be lacking in this same compassion.

  74. sock puppets November 12, 2012 10:35 am

Talking to ourselves again, are we?

  75. Derek November 12, 2012 10:35 am

There is a rule that says “The one that holds the gold, rules.” In football parlance, the guy who has the gold (the football) on every play, besides the Center, is the QB. The QB rules what the heck is going to happen in the next 1 to 5/6 seconds. Decisions, decisions, and execution. One all accounts, SS did not do the job and in fact he hurt the team badly (12 fumbles, 10 interceptions, 4 pick sixes, etc. etc. There is nothing really wrong with throwing the ball away to avoid a sack, or even giving a chance to punt the football.

It is the right decision to make the change at QB, too bad Chow didn’t have the wisdom to make the decision after the BYU game or even before, at least giving the backup some PT.

I don’t care what anybody says, the QB on the team is the most important player on the team. Just ask the Denver Broncos, ask Uban Meyer, ask Kevin Sumlin, ask Chip Kelly, ask the Indianapolis Colts, etc, etc. etc. As Al said, we need the next Holy Grail at UH. Is Aaron Zwahlen the person? Graham? Take Boise St., Joe Southwick is a serviceable QB and can win for you, but he’s no Kellen Moore. It’s obvious.

  76. Da Punchbowl Kid November 12, 2012 10:36 am

Toatally agree, d1. Thanks for that post.

  77. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 10:39 am

I don’t know who is mainly in charge of our hiring process but it is pretty clear that they don’t understand the difference of a successful Head Coach and someone who is mean to be a coordinator. Being a Head Coach is so different and takes a special type of leader that has vision and ability to have control of a whole. Includes adjustments and so on.

The fact that Norm is failing in every area including QB play, I don’t see how this program moves forward.

The only comments I hear week in and week out are “were gonna work, and work is only thing I know” and “SS gives us the best chance to win right now. At practice, hes the best, and it’s not all his fault.”

Obviously it isnt all his fault but he is the leader who has the ball in his hand and he needs to make proper adjustments and quicker reads. If not, Norm should be the competent leader and put someone else who might add a spark. This late in the season is just a little late to be making a switch fans have been calling for. Not to mentioned he needed to see film to confirm higgins out played Schroder.

  78. madeinhawaii November 12, 2012 10:40 am

I’ve tried to keep my denigrating centered on the coaching. They get paid to take this stuff. 😉

  79. d1shima November 12, 2012 10:46 am

I go to Costco and I know that Dom is really good to drink.

I check my wallet and decide that I need to buy the Kirkland beer instead.

My neighbor sees me unloading my car and says, “It’s pretty clear he doesn’t understand the difference between drinking beer and champagne.”

  80. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 10:47 am

    78. I think most of us have centered it towards coaching too. Just unfortunate that the most important position on the field is QB and SS gets nailed every week because Norm just refuses to make a change.

The 1 question I have for Norm is, how David Graves, who was our starter last year fell so far down the depth chart? What did he do that he could be that bad? I would like to think it is more personal than performance. We all know Graves would give us a better shot than most of our QBs. Yet he is a scout team WR? hmmm

  81. d1shima November 12, 2012 10:47 am

…so the coaches rank #119 out of 124 coaching staffs?

  82. gobows November 12, 2012 10:52 am

#68 you are wrong, the imua should be on the back, the team has been going backwards all season. therefor back is front, which makes it right, right. maybe the team should play backwards, then they’ll be moving forward. IMUA!

  83. gobows November 12, 2012 10:53 am

If we wanna copy cat, we should be scouting film on offenses such as La Tech, Oregon, Texas A&M, UCLA, Arizona.

  87. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 11:05 am

  88. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 11:09 am

    IMUA is DUMB.

might as well put A Hui Hou or Tofa Soifua on the back of our jerseys, bc w Chow in charge, we basically sayin bye bye to our football program.

    dude is stubborn and incompetent.

  89. Stephen Tsai November 12, 2012 11:12 am

Chow will delay announcing a starting QB until later this week. Higgins and Schroeder will split reps but Higgins will take the first snap in drills.

  90. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 11:14 am

    smh

  91. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 11:15 am

    88. yeah it is. chow wants the players and fans to forget about all the non-competitive games/scores and look forward to when he gets “his” type of players in. what a crock of kaka.

… and stop with that arm in arm BS, let the players run out like hyped-up, crazed dogs.

  92. imuagrad November 12, 2012 11:20 am

it aint the players that are killing this program! d-2 here we come

  93. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 11:20 am

    91. Chow is trying to add all these dumb changes and needs to focus on football.. Removing the names on the back of our jerseys was so cliche and ridiculous to begin with. IMUA made it look more of joke. This is a circus right now and if Chow thinks his product at the very moment is going to attract “his type of players” he is fooling himself.

Call me stupid but I don’t remember 6-6 Monster O linemen and 6-2 4.3 40 WRs wanting to play for winless football teams.

  94. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 11:21 am

  95. imuagrad November 12, 2012 11:23 am

  96. imuagrad November 12, 2012 11:25 am

by the way, from a financial standpoint, can we afford to keep him?

  97. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 11:26 am

    97. I dont think we can afford to fire him.

  98. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 11:27 am

if higgins and SS are still sharing snaps in practice, then it looks like SS will start, but with a shorter leash if things turn bad, or vice versa. either way it’s not fair to higgins. if higgins is the starter he should get the great majority of snaps to give him the best shot at succeeding at Air Force. SS had 9 games plus fall practice with the majority of snaps, give higgins a chance to succeed coach.

    98th passing (195.4) huge improvement

116th rushing (99.8) that’s worse than the rns years

112th scoring (19.6) von appen had superbowl rings, chow got heismans both suck at UH

123rd points against (43.3) worst in the nation.

    1 bright spot

UH leads the nation in kick return yardage. when you have the most attempts you should have a lot of yards.

53 for 1389 26.2 avg. but, mike edwards is something special. he leads the nation in kick returns.

    38 (T1st) for 1180 (1st) 31.1 avg. (6th) 3 td’s (T1st) all 100+yds. (T1st)

(fbs season record is 1606 isaiah burse fresno st 2011 )

i kind of doubt, teams will continue kicking to him. after all, the UH offense is not a threat.

  100. Slugger November 12, 2012 11:32 am

I am truly concerned about Sean’s health after getting all of those hits. Maybe they should give him the IMPACT test for concussion. Seriously, have a doc check his vision. It could be physical. Not making fun. The kid has taken a lot of hits so far.

Good luck to whoever is our QB in the next game. I’m sure Cayman would like a shot at competing as we’ll as well as David.

    GO WARRIORS!!! Stay healthy.

  101. Postmanke November 12, 2012 11:35 am

Is SS that impressive at practice?

  102. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 11:37 am

101.. I only got to see 1 week but he wasn’t that impressive. He was better than Higgins though. But the scrimmages are controlled so you don’t get to see what the QBs can do when plays breaks down. If a QB gets touched, play over. In the game, you get creamed. SS always held on to the ball knowing he wasn’t going to get hit.

  103. gobows November 12, 2012 11:38 am

#93 i agree with your point, but kentucky has many linemen in the 6-5,6-6,6-7 range. and their receivers are bigger than our defense. and they still suck. maybe somebody needs to go scout in the sec region. who knows, maybe some poor, abused, needy athlete may want to get away and have a fresh start. marshall faulk came from the south, remember what he did to UH and in the nfl.

  104. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 11:41 am

Kentucky is still a SEC school with nice facilities and money. Maybe it can be done but Chow didn’t have much success at UCLA as a OC.

Hard for me to believe he can change a program at Hawaii with less talent and money.

  105. A-joe November 12, 2012 11:48 am

All too often I’ve heard so many vilify their loyalty to UH by proclaiming they been through the “Von Appen Years.” Well, I can see who on this blog can honestly stake the claim their loyalty and commitment to UH has never wavered through Chow’s first year.

No matter how dire this season may seem, we as fans gotta stick together and back the program no matter what. It’s times like these that demonstrate our true character as fans.

I’m proud of all of you who’ve posted your opinions (both good and bad) It demonstrates you care about the program. Despite the challenging season we’re experiencing, I’m proud of the lurkers who religiously come here week after week to read about the latest info.

This is a good character building year for all of us. Honestly gang, we’ll be fine. The program will rebound. It’ll be glorious!! Promise!!

Chow needs an OC that he will be willing to listen to and work with to create his own blend of Offense better suited for the talents that he can “readily” recruit on the island and off island.

  109. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 11:54 am

by thursday, Schroeder will be named starter for the AFA game.

  110. PurpleMaple November 12, 2012 11:59 am

Chow is leaving the option open to declare Schroeder the starter. He is stubborn. It is so simple to name Higgins the starter, and if he performs poorly against Air Force, bring Schroeder in. So simple.

  111. Capitolist/WassupDoc November 12, 2012 12:01 pm

The future of the University of Hawai`i in all NCAA sports – not just football – starts off this week. It is is on the Board of Regents’ agenda at its Maui meeting this Thursday. Will call the Regents’ office tomorrow to arrange for a copy of the motion – the title is Approval of Establishment of Task Group on Intercollegiate Athletics.

Will post it here when I receive it. I will also post in the next day or two the Capital Improvement Budget 2011-2912 allocations for the University of Hawai`i at Manoa – with a focus on the Department of Athletics – and whether the funds have been released.

  112. PurpleMaple November 12, 2012 12:04 pm

Yes, Chow should hire an OC. Leave him on the field so Chow can go upstairs where he feels more comfortable. I mean that’s where he’s been as OC for all these years.

    Air Force is beatable.

Everyone on the team should focus of doing his job. Know your assignments and carry them out.

To me the O has lacked rythmn. Hopefully HIggins can get everyone in step. It’ll make play calling easier for Chow. No more mental errors.

The Defense needs to know that the O has their back. If they give something up it’ll give them confidence that the O will be able to answer.

The Warriors got to start playing as a team. Rythmn on O. Disruption on D.

  117. kev-1 November 12, 2012 12:42 pm

Uh oh! Chow already backing off the QB switch. I told you guys. He doesn’t want people saying I told you so. I predict later in the week that he’ll say that SS practiced better and has earned the right to start. I do think, as SAWARRIOR mentioned a few posts ago, that he will be on a shorter leash.

I am hoping to be proven wrong.

  118. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 12:56 pm

So ridiculous how Schroeder even deserves to split reps.

Uh oh! Chow already backing off the QB switch.

He could be waiting to just send in [Higgins?] at the start of the Warriors’ first offensive play. In doing so, Coach Chow avoids the press and anyone else (avoids same w/regard to Call the Coach; tomorrow, yes) commenting/asking, “oh, what led you to change the QB.” Methink it smart on Coach’s part, kev-1. He might not necessarily be “backing off” :D.

  120. Candy November 12, 2012 1:02 pm

I’m hoping that Higgins will start and be successful. In my mind Schroeder has done everything but execute. Higgins has proved he can do it but only in the late stages of the game so far. He deserves a chance to show that he can do it for 4 quarters, keep the defense off the field, and give us a chance to compete against the triple option in a tough environment. The whole team needs to rally around Higgins and make a game of it. Imua Warriors!

  121. Moocher November 12, 2012 1:05 pm

be careful what you wish for ….

pretty sickening how people been dumping on ss.

my biggest concern is higgins goes in, nothing gets better, then what? dump on higgins too?

if my players do not respond to my quarterback and “sabotage” the effort-they are out. IF this is what was happening where people gave less then 100% is that on ss or is that on the other players?

my GuESS is because chow is so demanding he rubbed people the wrong way-pretty much all demanding people do. and over time that alone will deflate any chance you ever had at a buy-in. for the most part the guys had it their way with JJ and Mac, and that changed sharply with chow. we all been there. demanding boss comes in, anything he wants we don’t give or best. the people he likes, we see as an extension of him and tend to not respond 100%. In the beginning we try our best. but when the demands get more demanding over time we give less then or best. this is what i THINK is happening with chow and this is what i think is happening with the 100% unconditional effort to “respond” to ss. ss got lead feet, we all know that. but i think this is another element that is casing O problems.

anyone ever stop to consider perhaps chow sensed there was a divide and IF he changed qbs and let players essentially “tell him what to do” that would certainly make things harder. IF this were the case chow needed to send a message.

i’m not pro shroeder. i just see things differently. this has nothing to do Xs and Os, it’s about managing a group of people with many types of personalities and abilities. i don’t question chow as a coach, but i would have to say i question his ability to have a leadership style where he can lead people and manage the personalities to reach the goals he set. all great coaches have the extra ingredient of being great managers of people and personalities.

i think a benching is good for ss at this point. in the eyes of the players he needs to perhaps distance himself from being chows boy to being the team’s quarterback if you know what i mean.

    …IMHO 🙂

  122. RedZone November 12, 2012 1:07 pm

If Chow is going with Higgins he needs to give him all the reps. At least give em a chance to succeed.

  123. Shoko November 12, 2012 1:12 pm

Would be interesting to know if the first-team O-line practices better (blocking, protection) when Higgins takes snaps, in place of Schroeder. No, not trying to create a conspiracy here. Okay, maybe just a little…hehe.

Is the difference between Schroeder and Higgins about intelligence, physical talent and instinct? Which attribute takes precedence over the others?

Would like to ask Chow that question, but calling into the Call the Coach Show is a pain in the A$$.

  124. Shoko November 12, 2012 1:13 pm

Think I’ll try to take a nap now and prepare for tonights MBB game.

  125. tommui November 12, 2012 1:15 pm

I hope that Coach will give Shutter some snaps to prepare him to go in if necessary.

  126. kev-1 November 12, 2012 1:17 pm

122 . . . yes, absolutely. But one has to wonder if Chow necessarily wants another QB to succeed after staunchly advocating for SS all season long. Did you notice that when he put in Higgins, he also took out Iosefa? Why not let him run the offense with the starting RB in there?

I am not saying conspiracy, but part of me does think that Chow has a big ego, which is to be expected with someone with a history of success and such experience. And that ego can get in the way of fans telling him to change the QB. He has already publically said that he gets pissed when people comment about a QB change.

  127. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 1:24 pm

Heres the thing. Taylor Graham is most likely going to be starting QB next season unless Aaron Zwahlen is the next big thing.

We cannot do any worse than what we have been doing. If it means giving all our QBs a shot, Shutter and Graves included, then who cares. Auburn is down to true Fr. Nothing is working for them but at least they are trying. Needs to be a little sense of urgency.

I don’t want to hear same bull crap every week after we score nothing offensively. Whether its QB A or QB B putting up no offense, there is no difference. Give guys a chance to light a spark

  128. Old School Dave November 12, 2012 1:25 pm

Kifi #106: Don’t forget that John L. Smith will be looking for a job after this season. Rich Miano would probably work for free, thus saving UH some $$.

  129. jeezy33 November 12, 2012 1:27 pm

The one thing that I think all fans are fed up with is every single week, Norm Chow says SS is the best QB we have at practice and gives us the best chance to win. No fans care about who the best practice players are. We pay to watch games.

  130. Old School Dave November 12, 2012 1:28 pm

Need to go after some JUCO O-linemen, pronto. S & C needs to step up or be revamped, also. Chow should look for some up and coming S & C coaches from the schools he’s coached at (Utah, UCLA, USC).

  131. kev-1 November 12, 2012 1:30 pm

    Jeezy,

I think Zwahlen is mission bound. It would be great if he came in without going on a mission, redshirts as a freshman while Graham starts. Graham has 2 years (right?). So if he is as advertised, when he leaves Zwahlen would be a Sophomore ready to take over.

But with the mission, Zwahlen returns after Graham finishes his 2 years. Not sure if he’d be ready to play right away.

  132. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 1:30 pm

^ whats the point of a new S&C coach. rumors are that the coaching staff has implemented this season’s S&C program. if they gonna keep doing that, no sense in hiring another front man.

    Can Shutter move??

I was at coaching when Shutter was a senior. We were alternating qb’s and 1/2 way through the season Shutter started to ‘get it in gear’.

In a playoff game we need a first down in the 4th 1/4 to keep a game winning drive alive and Shutter stepped up into the pocket, saw everyone covered and made a move to the outside, put his head down and went for the marker. From that point on he put the hammer down and took the team to the championship. He has the feet and he can move.

UH has a tight end so run the strong side option and let’s see how he does. Or even better, run the weak side pitch option and see if he really wants to step it up again.

  134. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 1:34 pm

    126. i agree with what ur saying. it’s y i posted my #98 post. if higgins is to start against AF, he needs the great majority of the reps, anything less will be setting higgins up for failure. SS got the great majority of the reps before the previous games, why not higgins give higgins the same opportunity.

  135. kev-1 November 12, 2012 1:37 pm

Well, if NC is such a detailed oriented coach, he’ll evaluate every aspect of his team’s preparation including the S & C program. It’s quite obvious that the team is physically not up to par with the competition.

  138. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 1:42 pm

  139. madeinhawaii November 12, 2012 1:42 pm

Maybe Chow doesn’t have enough Spread plays in his book to keep Higgins/Shutter occupied all practice long.

  140. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 1:44 pm

based on what Chow has been looking to change the past few weeks, when he looks at the S&C program, he’ll debate if we should lift in long sleeve shirts or short sleeve shirts? should we play reggae music or jazz music during workouts? maybe heavy metal.

should we drink warm water or cold water during workouts?

should we do a haka before we workout?

    etc.

  141. letsgowarriors November 12, 2012 1:47 pm

    check that.

should we do that haka in the weight room? or the locker room? maybe we can gather in the shower and do that haka then head out the locker room and into the weight room and begin the training workout.

  144. Hank November 12, 2012 2:07 pm

I’d like to see Higgins start because SS has gotten the stuffing beaten out of him over the last 2-months and is not playing like the guy we saw 8-weeks ago. His timing is off because he has a few less brain cells to work with.

For his safety, it’s my wish that he gets a break. Conservatively speaking, I think Sean’s gotten his head whacked at least 100-X over the last 2-months.

  145. al November 12, 2012 2:09 pm

The Warriors will be down to three available running backs — Joey Iosefa, John Lister and Sterling Jackson. Receiver Chinedu Amadi also can be used as a running back.

years ago the running back position was so thin that a skinny slotback/wr voluntarily auditioned as a replacement running back.

…enter gary allen. the rest was history.

    (chinedu you reading this?)

  151. kiipua November 12, 2012 2:30 pm

Thank you coach Chow. ESPN asked Chow to announce his starting QB. Coach Chow declined.

Why? Because coach is always thinking of Hawaii first. Instead of forcing the last 3,000 Warrior diehards to watch Higgins’ first start, coach is saying it’s okay to watch something else if Sean starts — again.

Because you never know when Jeremy will trip over his zoris, Caleb shave only half his face or Ikaika show up with mismatched tshirt/shorts — at practice. Unlike Sean, who is always clean, smooth, perfectly color coordinated — at practice.

So it’s a gift. If Sean starts, coach Chow says flip the channel, go surf or paddle your canoe because no make sense to watch Sean AND 3 hours of Leavitt Yamane & Soldner, Pancho Solar Heating or how much We Love Our Fujitsu.

  152. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 2:31 pm

    yuk, watercress

  153. kiipua November 12, 2012 2:33 pm

“Caleb shave only half his face”. “Caleb?” Who da guy. Could be Cayman, another imperfect practice QB.

  154. papajoe2 November 12, 2012 2:35 pm

SS wouldn’t have been as bust up if they put in another qb when the game was out of reach. Chow stuck with SS except to hand off on 3, 3 and outs. The last 2 games he gave Higgins a chance and we scored both games. Too bad Shutter only had 1 pass attempt in his game against Fresno. Maybe nerves got to him but handing off on 2 of his 3 plays is not much of a chance to prove anything. Until now, I never said that SS wasn’t the man, but wanted other qbs to be given a chance or even SS sitting out a little to watch and learn. Too bad Graves is no longer under consideration. After 9 games, finally CONSIDERING changing qbs. Graves has more experience then all of them combined and won more games than all of them combined inspite of SS starting in 9 games.

  155. papajoe2 November 12, 2012 2:37 pm

I dread SS starting and the same thing happens. You think attendance is bad now……

  157. Oahu Resident November 12, 2012 2:44 pm

My bet on Air Force is already in. UH covered the spread once by 1 point against SC. Othewise betting against UH has been a lock. The coaching doesn’t have a clue about stopping an option offense. They don’t run the option in the pros, so why hire a defensive coordinator from the NFL.

  158. tommui November 12, 2012 2:48 pm

    #149 IWWTHM

Watercress might eventually clear up the gout

But to really get rid of the uric acid in your system which causes the crystals to lodge in your joints is to have the MD give you a shot of colchicine. That will give you the running trots that flushes out the uric acid & crystals from your system.

Not pleasant but it is modern medicine at work!!!

Better that than to suffer at leisure!

(colchicine pills or alluprinol usually is prescribed to prevent the build up of uric acid in your system).

Why give Air Force a heads up on who’s going to start at QB?

  162. Shoko November 12, 2012 3:11 pm

    Chow’s weekly presser:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry7BERqaK7M

Sounds like Chow is going to a two-QB system. Meaning, neither Higgins nor Schroeder will play extensively and will be a game day decision. See some similarities between Chow and Mindenhall. Sort of when Bronco went two-QB system between Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps couple years ago.

  163. madeinhawaii November 12, 2012 3:17 pm

I thought it was Gobo (burdock root) that got rid of uric acid? Chinese parsley or Chinese Watercress is good for ridding the body of free radical mercury floating around in your system from your tooth fillings or bones as you age…

  164. Shoko November 12, 2012 3:20 pm

    Pretty good presser.

  167. PurpleMaple November 12, 2012 3:47 pm

I didn’t see the play, but if Will Gregory was defending himself, I would not suspend him. I like a player with strong spirit and moxy. Hope Chow does not kill the spirit of young men. These are young men. But thie kind of discipline he seems to be imposing may produce more negative than positive. Just my opinion. Instead of game suspension, perhaps some form of community service might serve better character building. Like going to a care home to boost the spirit of those who are old or sick.

  168. slenzi November 12, 2012 4:00 pm

Wow, sounds like we are a house divided … on just about everything. Need to be thankful for the things we have. We do not have a Penn State-like issue, we do not have bowl bans and scholarship take-aways (well not as many as others), we got plenty tatoos by no “tat-gate” so I’m thankful. Hope that Coach Chow and the players can sift through all the minutia and concentrate on football. Somehow I have a sense that the team leaders, traditionally heavily in local boys and poly-players, are not stepping up to be leaders. They must feel they can talk to Coach Chow and address team concerns or they will not be able to concentrate on football. Need to keep the aloha, kokua, and ohana front and center so we can get to som ho’oponopono. Lets make da kuleana pono (Bruddah Iz).

  169. slenzi November 12, 2012 4:04 pm

Air Force is beatable, but they play at 6,273 feet above sea level, in cold, dry air, and the wind can really rip along the mountain range at this time of year. If Army found a way to beat Air Force, the surely Hawaii can.

  170. Shoko November 12, 2012 4:05 pm

Didn’t see the incident involving Gregory either, but if Chow doesn’t take action, there’s a chance that the MWC will.

I like the four-QB system. Schroeder in the first quarter. Higgins in the second. Shutter in the third. And Iosefa in the fourth. I think it might work.

  171. Shoko November 12, 2012 4:17 pm

Whats interesting with New Mexico is that they have lost four games in a row since playing Hawaii. I think opposing teams may have found out a way of beating that Davie’s triple option.

why would any coach or top player, local or otherwise want to be at the mercy of hawaii fans? disloyal, distasteful, disingenuous, disgusting, disturbing and dis and dat too. this blog is a microcosm of what the hawaii’s sports community is all about. a small base core of knowledeable fans that are willing to sacrifice and give beyond that which is affordable by making the teams a very part of their soul. then there is the expectant core that feels entitled to satisfaction because they have unforgivingly invested time, ticket and tax money to the cause of entertainment and feel they have every right to berate coaches and players alike. then comes a bunch of cynical comedians that think their every post of devaluement is a cerebral thought that merits a badge of laughable honor. and lets not forget the investment core that bet each week and couldn’t careless about wins and losses except when the over/under is affected. woe is the gambler when scorned and volatile is his venom in defeat. the majority core will rise unabashedly in exuberant victory, but will turn their backs on their own in a heartbeat when things don’t go their way. they want a big time environment without pain and sacrifice along the way. they cannot control their negative emotions. they want. they expect. they are entitled. they are the fairest of them all.

  192. Derek November 12, 2012 5:02 pm

A common saying I have been hearing in general is a certain team is fun to watch. When JJs run and shoot was playing it was fun to watch. The offense would score a lot of points and it was exciting. Sadly, it’s boring now and NOT fun to watch.

  193. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 5:04 pm

nevermind… 3am CT on ESPN. Houston Baptist @ Hawaiii MBB

  194. Will-I-Am November 12, 2012 5:06 pm

Throwing punches should be at least that game plus one suspension.

I am also a firm believer in personal fouls should result in missing the following play.

Those all come down to discipline. If the players aren’t self disciplined to control it then the coaches need to correct them severely so they do not hurt the team again.

    Air Force is beatable.

Hope Chow is stalling so as not to tip his hand. He should let the team know NOW the public can wait. The last thing he’d want is the players getting caught up in the DECISION. Wouldn’t want half the team backing Schroeder and the other half backing HIggins. Players are people too. They have feelings and opinions like everyone else.

    @214: I going!

  215. cocobean November 12, 2012 6:46 pm

    Air Force is beatable.

QB isn’t the only position that needs improved play. From what I’ve read here and elsewhere every position has come under criticism with the exception of RB and DE. Playing better is not an individual problem it’s a team problem.

It’s too late to get bigger, faster, stronger, that’s what the off season is for. For now to play better everyone has to play smarter. Know your assignments, trust your technique – just do your job. Play as a team, play with spirit, play for each other. Hate to say this but….play like a Military Academy.

HIggins is not a savior. In my eyes his biggest asset is overcoming busts in the line. He moves off the spot quicker and gets the ball out of his hands quicker. What he lacks is experience. It would be unfair to him to think he won’t make mistakes in his first start.

Really hope the team will rally around him with everyone elevating their game.

  216. sjmacro November 12, 2012 6:49 pm

    @214, 215 – I be there as black ninja :)- sj

  217. kapakahi November 12, 2012 6:59 pm

With Miah and Darius the only 2 senior scholie receivers gone after this season, JMHO that landing another receiver (this time from the JC ranks) in addition to the previous HS commit from Utah (Marcus Kemp) is an early indicator that some scholie underclassmen receivers (i.e., those who either haven’t played this season and/or those who will be seniors after this season) might not be invited to return for next season….being that the coaches aren’t yet done with recruiting new receivers.

  218. Bigislandkurt November 12, 2012 7:02 pm

Tried them all. Cherry juice. Watercress. Loads of water. Water treatments, etc. INHO, The ONLY proven way to prevent gout attacks are to….

    1) Study your habits and learn what your triggers are. Different strokes for different folks. For some, beer might be a trigger. For others, tomatoes or oatmeal can spike the uric acid levels. You have to study your patterns. For me, any broth or soup made with bones….of which most broths and soups are. Why? Because that bugguh is ono. Soup bones make the soup mo ono. Those Japanese ramen joints are so damn ono because they been braising that pork bones on low heat for like 20 years. Bones, and more specifically – Bone marrow, the “flavor in the bones” is a huge trigger for me. Bone marrow — one of the most “richest” foods on the planet. Marrow spikes the uric levels like crazy.

    2) always keep some modern meds in the cabinet. Colchrys (Colchecene) and Indomethecin (anti inflamatory). Keep these for emergencies. Don’t keep them to support a bad pattern. I know friends who keep these meds handy to pop when they know they will be drinking beer and eating trigger foods. I’m not with that approach, but if that is what folks like to do, that is certainly their prerogative. I find that if I pay attention to triggers like broths and bone marrow, I rarely suffer any attacks. And if I do get an attack, it’s rather minor. One colchrys and one indo does the trick.

Your BIG (Brother in Gout) BIK. 🙂

  222. Bryson November 12, 2012 7:49 pm

In regards to Will Gregory throwing punches could it have been that maybe BSU players were taunting him he did end up near there bench and the team was circled around him… I’m just wondering because remember when BSU beat Oregon and the D lineman taunted Oregon’s RB….Then he went to sleep….

#216 Tottally agree!! Jeremy is not the answer.

But I love his attitude. He will slide and move

in pocket and will anticipate his throws and throw

to good spots, but will have tendency to throw

too many picks because of lack of arm strength

due to palm up delevery and not consistently

staying with proper arm delevery and staying

with in the frame of his body

  227. kev-1 November 12, 2012 9:03 pm

Disgusting that power and money are so blatantly reserved for the select few. Feel like being disgusted by the greed of big money conferences, read the article below. My favorite part?

“The SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and Pac-12 will receive the biggest chunk of the new revenue. Each of those leagues will receive the same base amount of revenue, sources said. The remaining “Group of Five” leagues — Big East, C-USA, MWC, Sun Belt and MAC — will split a smaller amount among themselves.”

If you’re making FIVE conferences split one share of the bowl revenue, shouldn’t it at least be an equal, if not slightly larger share?

This “group of five” deal is considered fair? I guess when you are faced with nothing as the alternative, yes.

  231. kev-1 November 12, 2012 9:22 pm

    RE: the Gregory suspension . . .

He missed the entire game. IMO that is punishment enough. This is football. Sometimes players let their emotions get to them. The suspension is a little much if you ask me.

  232. kev-1 November 12, 2012 9:25 pm

I have this vision of the big conferences taking the “Group of Five” commissioners, putting them in a room and throwing their revenue share into the middle of the room in one hunderd dollar bills. Then they sit back with their cigars laughing as they watch the five desperate commissioners fight over the money.

Hawaii MBB team in black uniforms, bugga looks sharp. The black unis have WARRIORS in the front instead of the lame HAWAII. This is what i wanted for the football team.

  236. PowderPuff November 12, 2012 11:18 pm

GOUT?!? Who’s talking about gout? I am an expert! 🙁 BIK has a lot of of good advice…I have identified my trigger and now trying to get away from it….it’s sooo hard! I need something to talk about while trying NOT to fall asleep watching Vander and the Rainbow Warriors on the Hoops Marathon.

  237. 3-Prong November 12, 2012 11:33 pm

  238. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 11:35 pm

  239. SAWARRIOR November 12, 2012 11:50 pm

MBB team looks good, i wonder how they will do against tougher competition.

  240. 3-Prong November 12, 2012 11:52 pm

SAW: No kidding. Unis look good and also liking what I see on the court. Boys are ballin! We’ll see how good they are with stepped up competition. Especially like “FRO-tu” rebounding action. He just may break Melton Wert’s rebound record.

  241. Bleed Green and White November 13, 2012 12:46 am

    (#232: kev-1)

I really hope you are kidding. Suspending Will Gregory is indeed the right thing to do. To actually punch a player, and three times for that matter, well, that’s chicken sh@t, and it should be dealt with in a serious manner.

I applaud Chow for making a statement and taking a stand.

  242. WarriorMojo November 13, 2012 1:41 am

So now Gregory threw THREE punches? Jeez, by this time next week it might be murder 1.

Chow didn’t even know what happened and he disdainfully waved Gregory off the field. Then in the post game interview he disgustedly says Gregory will be severely punished. Whatever happened to getting Gregory’s side of the story before passing judgment? Whatever happened to watching the tape?

Even IF Gregory did something stupid, don’t throw him under the bus. That’s BS.

  243. Shoko November 13, 2012 3:07 am

Damn, missed the game (again) last night. That would make it three years in a row! Anyway, sounds like the MBB is off to a good start, albeit against subpar teams. Illinois and UNLV are good teams that will provide the Warriors with a good test.

  244. Shoko November 13, 2012 3:11 am

Just one more comment regarding Gregory’s suspension.

Oregon’s LaGarette Blount punched Boise’s Byron Hout after the Oregon-Boise game a few years ago that resulted in Blount being suspended by Chip Kelly for the season. He was then reinstated mid-season after making ammends (letter of apology). If Kelly didn’t take action, the conference would have according to their bylaws.

Another example, South Carolina’s Kelcy Quarles was suspended when he threw a punch during a game against LSU. Coach Spurrier said that he doesn’t condone that kind of conduct on or off the field. The SEC has already suspended a few players that were involved in what can be considered “flagrant and dangerous conduct”.

Again, the conference leaves it up the the schools to take disciplinary actions on players that are involved in these type of incidents. However, if no action is taken by the school, the conference – if deemed necessary – will hand down punishment.

  245. LizKauai (iPad) November 13, 2012 4:43 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

I’m with Mojo re Will Gregory. Looks like he was getting harassed pretty good before we was out of camera range on his run downfield…

I thot coach was gonna lookt at the videos…. Anyway…

    Go Warriors!

  246. papajoe2 November 13, 2012 5:04 am

Basketball looked very good last night until the last 2 minutes. Houston Baptist was down by about 20 when they made a late surge to close to the final score. HB coach has won 406 games there, although they came up from an NAIA school a few years ago. The are even younger than Hawaii with a lot of freshmen and sophmores getting significant playing time. Good job Hawaii.

Nice tourney performance by MBB. Next stop: Fighting Illini

  249. Heller? November 13, 2012 6:44 am

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses. Schroader should be benched, plain an simple. He has not won the hearts of anyone on offense. He does not talk to them, he doesn’t try to communicate with them, Higgins does, simple.

  250. obachan November 13, 2012 7:07 am

#243 IF your scenario is accurate – another reason why I don’t trust Shogun Chow’s judgment.

  251. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 13, 2012 7:27 am

if a player does something stupid, the coach can throw him under the bus all he wants.

    crime and time.

  252. Independent Thinker November 13, 2012 7:30 am

    On Shroeder

Anyone who is a fan of boxing understands what happens when a boxer is relegated to being a sparring partner for a champ. The sparring partner is selected because he is good, but isnt a real threat to the champ (someone who does good in real fight situations).

Shroeder is like a sparring partner. He looks good in sparring sessions, but he gets wiped out in actual fight sessions.

    On Higgins

Higgins, on the other hand, is a fighter, not a sparring partner. He performs when the bells rings, not when he is in the gym doing pitter patter with the other fighters. He knows he is in a real fight when the bell rings, not a practice fight where the defenders are told not to hit the QB, and he reacts accordingly. Hence, he is a gamer, in parlance of many who post here. This is why Higgins moves and Shroeder doesnt.

We all know people like Shroeder and Higgins. The problem, it seems to me, is that Chow did not recognize this difference between the two early on.

  253. AlaWai November 13, 2012 7:31 am

Will Gregory retaliated. I was on the side of the incident and Gregory retaliated. He got caught. The point is regardless of the circumstance, Gregory should have left the scene. Within the rules, there is no shade of gray for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. This is a life lesson as well as a football lesson. No such think as “justifiable retaliation” in football.

  254. maddog50 November 13, 2012 7:35 am

Go Warriors….Joey, Jeremy, Beau et al. Let’s bring this one home. It is time for that maligned OL to make a statement and maybe the spark that is needed is QB change. Change is good….this program will rise and all the naysayers can find something else to gripe about—-GO WARRIORS!!!!
