Wednesday's practice

The Warriors were again in shoulder pads today for the fourth practice of spring training. Some notes:

• Corey Paclebar and Billy Ray Stutzmann were the No. 1 slots. Paclebar was ahead of Allen Sampson, who was the No. 1 left slotback for the first three practices. Stutzmann, who had been the backup at right wideout, was the No. 1 right slotback in place of Terence Bell.

• Coach Greg McMackin called for the “Warrior Drill,” in which he matches a player from offense and a player from defense in a one-on-one battle. Safety Richard Torres bested wideout Royce Pollard, and linebacker Aaron Brown outdueled running back Sterling Jackson. Center Matagisila “Sila” Lefiti outdueled defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu. After that, it was revealed that Lefiti’s nickname is “Godsila.”

• Walk-on Kenton Chun aced his orientation. In a field-goal test, surrounded by heckling teammates, Chun converted all six of his attempts, each from 35 yards. Two were from the right hashmak, two from the left, and two in the middle.

• Offensive guard Andrew Faaumu and defensive end Beau Yap are practicing as backup long-snappers.

• Leroy Lutu, making the adjustment from basketball player to safety, had an interception in team drills.

• The Warriors spent 45 minutes working on special-teams fundamentals. It was the longest practice period for the specialists in McMackin’s four spring trainings. The period served as both a teaching session and evaluation period. Selection of the “strike force” — previously known as special teams — will not be determined until after spring break.

* * * * *

The next two spring practices will be important for linebacker Art Laurel, who is projected to have an expanded role in the Warriors’ plans. With the Warriors running the 45 scheme most of the 2010 season, there were limited opportunities at the two linebacker positions. With Corey Paredes recovering from shoulder surgery and Laurel having shown progress, defensive coordinator Dave Aranda declared: “It’s Art Laurel time.”

Some lawyers refer to the area in front of the jury box as the proving ground. The same can be said for the area between the defensive line and secondary.

    Hey people,

I am still here, just been lurking, and reading all the excellent thought of Hawaiiansun, thank you. That person can put it better then I can, most times. Starting to realize Ralph has small time thinking. Saying the Wahine hitting got them to the Regional. Hey, Ralph, I want their hitting to win the CWS. The way they are hitting right now, will not even allow them to get to a Super Regional, let alone win the CWS. My target is to win the CWS, what will it take for the Wahine to accomplish that goal. They have the defense and pitching to do it, but right now, their hitting will not accomplish that goal, far from it. This tournament will say alot. Coolen in SA article seems to already have his excuse in order, if the Wahine do not play, or hit well. Coolen job is to make sure the Wahine are ready no matter what, not start looking for excuses why they may not perform. You do not see Coach Arnold trying to look for an excuse, when a player goes down with an injury, he just says they just have to play on with what they have. Coolen, the problem is not with your 8 or 9 hitters, it is with the returning 5, they have not come close to hitting like they did last year, especially when it counts, with runners in scoring position.

Again, THANK YOU, HAWAIIANSUN, another person who thinks BIG, not like the most of you who are small thinkers, only thinking about the Wahine making it to the NCAA tournament.

Well, well. This morn’s artcle on wahine sb seems to acknowledge wahine batting woes by Coach Coolen, IB Sarah Robinson and Jason Kaneshiro.

    Funny stuff.

Seems WSF has some merit and credibility in his conclusions.

Supports the old axiom, if you dont acknowledge a problem, you cant resolve it.

    Coach Coolen says:

“We can’t let up right now because our bodies are tired, our minds are tired and we’re coming off a big stretch of a lot of games…We just need to punch through it and just enjoy playing rather than putting pressure on ourselves. We have to got out and start free swinging and let our pitchers do what they’re capable of doing.”

Robinson believes in Pedro Cerrano: “This past tournament our bats started coming around and I think that’s just going to carry over into the next tournament.

Kaneshiro sums it up and offers a few hints, “Coolen tinkered with the lineup last weekend, moving center fielder Kelly Majam from the leadoff spot to seventh in the order on Sunday and fifth on Monday. Majam, who continues to deal with the effects of offseason cancer treatment that included removing her thyroid, spent a game in the designated player spot and said a bit of rest helped her break out of a slump with a home run on Sunday”.

  22. kama krab March 16, 2011 8:50 am

    Howzit Everybody,

Ok so let’s look at last year’s team for example. The team as a whole started off in a slump and a hard time hitting as they are right now. As the season went on, the hitting got better to the point that they lead the nation in hr and had a pretty decent batting average. Especially in a long season, there is alot of time to get hitting to hit it’s stride. As I said yesterday, I have doubt in my mind that things will turn around and they will start hitting with better bat control. Hitting comes with practice and with the more at bats the team gets, the better the hitting will be.

Like I said, at the end of the season, the wahine will be back in the tournament with a chance at the CWS.

  23. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 8:58 am

Like I have said before, the big difference between you people, and Hawaiiansun and me, is that you people think small, Hawaiiansun and I think big. Inotherward, we look at what it will take the Wahine to WIN the CWS. Whereas you people just want the Wahine to get into the NCAA tournament and hopefully get into a Super Regional, and crossing fingers make it to the CWS.

  24. hawaiiansun March 16, 2011 8:59 am

#7,ditto. I remember a coach whispering Art Laurel was a must get in the recruiting meetings back in his wahiawa dayz ….after reviewing his football vital signs and film, most concurred. His dad is a great Warrior supporter too and must be jazzed to see both his sons in the mix for Team 2011…..best wishes to the Laurel ohana!

  25. Bowwar March 16, 2011 9:01 am

I love the UH Women’s Softball Team and their accomplishments…

That being said, until WSB starts to pay for the bills, I really can’t take them very seriously…

Football and Basketball drives the athletic programs at UH, so I’ll always pay more attention them as long as they pay the bills.

  26. kama krab March 16, 2011 9:03 am

    Eh Hawaiiansun #19,

Thanks for validating some of our stance against WSF. There is more to it then the girls over swinging or swinging for the fences. With Majam, I am just amazed that she has the strength to do what she is doing at a high level. She just had cancer treatment and will continue to go through cancer treatment and she is hitting homeruns. There are people out there that never recover from the effects of cancer and Majam is still playing at a high level. Some of the girls are tired from the long travel schedule. Yes people do get tired and when they do they press. If you haven’t played a sport at a high level, you never know the feeling. Your friend WSF may call that excuses but I will tell you from experience, that this is just human nature and if you both had played sports at a high level you guys would now that.

  27. Ralph March 16, 2011 9:10 am

WSF I only reported that their hitting got them to the Tennessee Regional and that statement was never meant to mean the team or I did not wanting to win the CWS. The Tennessee Super Regional was back in 2007, its over, we lost, so I could only state that their hitting got them to the point. It is not small thinking, it happened that way, you try too hard to reinforce your opinion by looking for anything negative and take it to a point of exaggeration.

  28. Bwhaha March 16, 2011 9:12 am

    Steve = WahineSoftballFan = hawaiiansun = Ralph…. NOT!

    bwhahahahaha

  29. kama krab March 16, 2011 9:15 am

    Eh WSF #24,

    Exactly,

There is a big difference in thinking but to say that we think small time is really not knowing what your talking about. I would call our thinking realistic thinking. If going to the tournament for Hawaii was as easy as fixing our hitting, playing good defense, and pitching well then heh we would be in the CWS every year and so would most of the 300 D-1 teams but it is not that easy. As I said, if you had played sports at a high level like these girls are, you would now that there is more to it then just that. You put travel, change in time zone, altitude and many more other elements into play and that is just some of the things to factor into the equation. Yah it’s easy for team like UCLA and Arizona because they are on the continent so travel does not really come into play until CWS time.

I think this whole thing comes down to being realistic about things and I will say that it would be realistic to expect a tournament birth for this team. Anything else would come down to luck and how is left in the tank come the end of the season.

    How typically illogical.

  32. kama krab March 16, 2011 9:21 am

Ok so I’m done with this debate cause it’s becoming to be like talking to someone with no common sense. It’s like talking to a person that ask questions before thinking about the questions there asking.

Anyway I’m back to lurking and the invitation is still out if WSF or Hawaiiansun want to come out to St. Louis today at 3:30 to get a clinic on how things are done.

  33. Ralph March 16, 2011 9:21 am

#19 HS yes, Coolen and nearly everyone watching Na Wahine softball acknowledges that they are not hitting at the same pace as last season. But WSF take is that they are swinging for the fences leading to pop ups, etc and he suggests that they take a line drive mentality.

I think what Coolen is saying does not give merit to WSF, and he thanks you for siding with him, because Coolen stated that the team needs to start “free swinging”, that statement does not support WSF opinion that the Na Wahine were hitting for the fences.

He stated in an early mainland tournament that the hitters were too pensive, they need to go out and take their cuts. At no time did he mention a home run stroke or the need to hit more home runs to keep pace with last season’s home run totals.

  34. Derek March 16, 2011 9:26 am

If Art Laurel makes a hit and causes a fumble and John Hardy-Tuliau scoops it up and runs for a touchdown can we say that Laurel and Hardy made the play!!!!!!!! We could be laughing all the way to the end zone.

It’s good to see the men’s basketball team playing well. It will definitely help recruiting and we have one scholarship open for next year. I still say we need a point guard with quickness and can handle the ball. With Miah playing football we won’t have his services from late November to late December. That’s about 10 games. Josten Thomas sometimes is out of control. He has a tendency to causing offensive fouls and also rushes his shots. He has to stay in control. You can see he has talent. Using the talent the right way he will be more effective and will get more minutes. He and also some others need to work on improving their free throw shooting. Miah is one of them, also Bobby Miles. Joaquim is improving.

  35. Ralph March 16, 2011 9:27 am

WSF Arizona or UCLA, tell us, who do you pick to win the CWS this season. And for the team that you don’t pick, did you eliminate the team because of the coach? And what criticism do you have for the coach that came in second in your choice because that would be applicable to about 299 other coaches who did not win the CWS.

  36. BG March 16, 2011 9:28 am

UCLA with 11 National Softball championships, and Arizona is second with 8. No SEC team has ever won the Softball National championship.

  43. Da Punchbowl Kid March 16, 2011 9:39 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

#35 Derek- Laurel and Hardy… hilarious! 😆 If both Laurel brothers start playing really well and cause lots of scoring, will that cause UH to “rest on their Laurels”? 😆

Looks like the Laurels are well represnted. Question: Have we ever had sibling starters before? Particularly with one on offense and one on defense?

Claimin’ Top Forty or whatever for travelin’ Tom!

  44. hawaiiansun March 16, 2011 9:43 am

wahine must play Fresno State Bulldogs on their diamond for both the regular and Tournament phases. The WAC wont be a two-step cruise this year and the conference will be tough at the top.

The road to regional play goes through the San Joaquin Valley and wahine will need to be free swingers to win.

Coolen has brought Ricketts and Parnaby to a level that makes our team competitive.

This is the best they have performed against great competition.

If our fab5 can shake the second year vodoo, combined with the hitting of Sharla and Sarah, we will be on track to capture another WAC Crown. Anything we get out of the #8 or 9 spots–will be a gift….the end of our batting lineup is a deadend cul de sac and not spots that will flip the order again.

Most dont buy into Coolen’s lament about ‘travel makes my wahine under-perform’.

In Palm Springs wahine bats whiffed notoriously.

Last year, Wahine put together their best hitting-spree on a road trip that went from the Mexican Border through the high Sierra’s and nearly to Canada. In the process, one game in Logan was cancelled due to a snow storm.

No tired legs, cold bats or excuses. Iwata was awarded NPOW for her incredible batting feats on the road under adverse conditions. The entire team was on fire.

Travel woes? Not this team– they are well-seasoned and the most experienced and successfully travelled team in the nation.

Lamest excuse on this website for vodoo bats in 2011:

“the pitching rubber was moved back several years ago”. funny stuff. 🙂

  45. Ralph March 16, 2011 9:49 am

AL I’m asking WSF which team, UCLA or Arizona, will win the NCAA National Softball Championships this season. Tsai posed the question to him yesterday, pick the winner, and he chose the two teams, but Tsai again asked him to pick one. So I’m continuing the thought, which one WSF.

WSF never did answer Tsai’s question, he answers with another question, always evasive.

  46. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 9:54 am

    Ralph,

As I have stated before, cannot choice between the 2 schools, reason being coaches are equal.

  47. Stretch March 16, 2011 9:57 am

As Phil Jackson said… “Is it the playoffs yet?”

Crap, it isn’t even WAC season yet. It’s PRE-season where preparations are made for the upcoming season. If we went undefeated all the way to the CWS final game but lost, according to WSF, we would still have a bad coach.

  48. Nick Kiyabu March 16, 2011 9:58 am

  49. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 9:59 am

Auburn vs. Alabama doubleheader in women’s softball will be shown on espn3.com today if anyone is interested.

  50. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 9:59 am

Wahine defense is solid enough, pitching is good, batting is average, at most. What you need to win the CWS, is the following formula’s. Excellent defense, excellent pitching, and good hitting, OR, excellent defense, good pitching, and excellent hitting. The Wahine are in the second category, Steph and Kaia, are good pitchers, not excellent, they have an excellent defense, but right now their hitting is average, need it to become excellent to win CWS. By excellent pitcher meaning, Pitcher of the Year type, which they are not.

  51. Stretch March 16, 2011 10:00 am

WSF – I’ll give you those two teams, I’ll take the rest of the teams with inferior coaches. Let’s see who wins the CWS.

  52. Ralph March 16, 2011 10:00 am

Coolens statement is not an excuse, he is making a general statement that all players and coaches will agree to, as the season progresses and games are played with increase frequency at home and on the road, the body is tired and an athlete must push through it.

Kama Krab also commented that athletes go through fatigue phases and they need to deal with it and push through, unless they “hit the wall” and can’t go on. It is only natural to feel drained, that is why they do preseason conditioning and strength training to be able to push through fatigue phases quicker and their bodies recover their energy base in a shorter time.

  53. hawaiiansun March 16, 2011 10:00 am

#34, Ralph, you are reading WSF too strickly. Relax….u r too good a fan to be bothered by an opinion.

I mentioned in one post that NO one, including Coolen has a clue is to WHY at this point we are struggling in the box….. and we wont, until they (Coolen and Titcomb) film, go back to the cage and rebuild each swing based on their batting forensic reports.

WSF is speculating as to cause and effect. So what?

    It’s just an opinion.

    Why shoot the messenger?

Personally, i just watch how Coolen reacts–that is clearly visible.

What I see is a bewildered coach grabbing for straws.

Look, when Ricketts or Parnaby struggle, Coach is on top of it and makes immediate adjustments with all six-senses working. he is so uncanny with his pitchers.

When it comes to batting, Coach makes shifts in his batting order or rotates players.

That has not resolved the problem this season as it did last year.

  54. Ralph March 16, 2011 10:02 am

what time is the Alabama and Auburn game, hey, I don’t have espn 3.

  60. al March 16, 2011 10:09 am

    paclebar? wow.

is this because of injuries, experiments, or extended basketball season?

  61. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:10 am

The first game has just started. Auburn loaded the bases, but Alabama got out of it. Going to the bottom of the 1st, 0-0.

  62. Stretch March 16, 2011 10:13 am

Someone better go coach up those Auburn players how to hit with players on base. They will NEVER win a CWS title that way.

  63. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:13 am

    Alabama ranked #2, Auburn #24.

  64. NCAA March 16, 2011 10:17 am

I pick Alabama. Why? Because I find it odd that the Crimson tide would have an elephant for a mascot. Roll Tide!

Some people write their opinions. One person thinks his opinion is fact.

    Go Wahine!

    Go Warriors!

    Go BasketBows!

  65. Stretch March 16, 2011 10:17 am

Don’t tell me Auburn is thinking small time?? I am sure they want to win a CWS championship.

  69. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:23 am

Some of us dont have the pleasure of living in Hawaii, so this is one of the main places to get up to date “goings on” for football information and follow our athletes, right here. Its always nice to see pictures once in a while, even of UH Softball, Basketball etc. Thank you for all you do STsai

  81. mctruck March 16, 2011 10:40 am

    Pffffffffffttttt!!!!!!

  82. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:40 am

How about showing the last practice of the spring as a half of a real football game? If the football team does this, it would be a good way of grooming a new o coordinator and d coordinator in case the originals are woo’d away.

  83. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:42 am

    Ralph,

#53, Coolen was talking about the past tournament and this tournament being so close together, no time for the players to really rest, not throughout the whole season. Hey Coolen, who made up the schedule, the WAC, I do not think so. For your information if you have forgotten, you did, so you have no reason to complain. If you feel your players would get tired, then leave more down time between pre-season tournaments. BTW, did you not say your players need to become more free swinging, before the last tournament also. Well, it did not really happen did it. Just saying it will not make it happen coach.

  84. mctruck March 16, 2011 10:43 am

    ST,

der wuz a time when there wuz better control on subject matter on your site….now everything is all chop sui; I hate it, hate, hate it!!!!!

  85. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:44 am

Alabama home run…their first hit of the game.

  86. mctruck March 16, 2011 10:45 am

If it is what it is….so be it, just voicing my personal opinion.

  87. Stretch March 16, 2011 10:46 am

WSF – if you don’t like Coolen, just say so.

  88. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:46 am

    Sportsforfun,

If Oceanic goes with a UH Channel, as they say, hoping they show the Spring Football Game.

  89. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:49 am

WOW! Auburn’s 2nd hit of the game is a home run to tie the game.

  90. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:51 am

As a pitching coach, Coolen is one of the best, but when it comes to hitting he has a lot to be desired. Talking to some of the players, it seems he leaves it up to the player to find out what they are doing wrong and to fix it. That right there tells you that he does not have a clue when it comes to hitting.

  91. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:51 am

WSF, but would they show it as a full game or just half a game. I’m not sure how that “game” is orchestrated.

  92. al March 16, 2011 10:54 am

calling me stupid is getting personal and i take offense to that remark.

and wsf you should switch to tennis.

  93. sportsforfun March 16, 2011 10:55 am

Maybe someone should volunteer to coach hitting for the Wahine if what you say is true WSF. I would hope that someone on staff would be qualified to do that besides Coach Coolen.

  94. NCAA March 16, 2011 10:56 am

For someone to be so upset with the coach and all the players except for one, why be a booster? Obviously you do want a quality program, but there is a better way to communicate your frustrations.

  95. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:56 am

    al,

It was just a figure of speech, cheesh.

  96. haka March 16, 2011 10:59 am

    WahineSoftball Fan,

It’s obvious that you have more than a professional dislike for Coach Coolen.

For whatever reason, it’s personal. So, one question since you are so smart.

(And if you say Candrea or Inouye-Perez I am sure we will all laugh our arses off)

Who would YOU hire to take Coach Coolen’s place?

  97. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:59 am

    NCAA,

I have no problem with the players at all. They are just following the instructions of an inadequate head coach when it comes to hitting.

  98. al March 16, 2011 11:01 am

#78…i was making an analogy of someone picking between ucla and arizona.

  99. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 11:05 am

    Sportsforfun,

#92, I would hope whatever makes up the Spring Football Game.

  100. NCAA March 16, 2011 11:08 am

    Steve,

How soon you forget. This is what your posted about the other players. It sure looks like you have a problem with them:

    WahineSoftballFan:

    March 15th, 2011 at 1:05 pm

The only Wahine I see trying to work on her hitting is Kelly. She is always in the batting house by herself, at least an hour, before any of her teammates show up. Rest can be found in their clubhouse. They must feel that they do not have to work on their hitting, cause they are all hitting close to 400.

If they have time to be in the clubhouse, they have time to be in the batting house, cause they all need it. But does coach Coolen care, NO!!!!

  101. longboarder March 16, 2011 11:08 am

    Gosh Steve-O

    first you hated on Mafua

then you got kicked of CL’s blog

soon you claimed that CL was out of a job with the Star Advertiser

now you are hating on coach coolen

as i said before at least you are consistent

somebody really needs to point out who this clown is.

  102. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 11:10 am

    al,

#99, When St. Louis and/or Kahuku, get to that game, they expect to win, all other teams just hope they can win, big difference. The same with Arizona and/or UCLA, when they get to the CWS, they expect to win it, all other teams hope the can. That is why, in either case, when those teams meet, it is one outstanding game.

  103. Anon Tips March 16, 2011 11:12 am

  104. haka March 16, 2011 11:12 am

  105. haka March 16, 2011 11:13 am

    #103 WSF

And they expect to win because of the coaching?

  106. NCAA March 16, 2011 11:13 am

    Steve,

You have not answered questions from ST regarding coaching.

You have not answered questions from al regarding your credentials.

Why avoid these questions when you have so much to offer and solutions to problems. Share and make the world a better place. Otherwise you’ll be constipated with useful information. C’mon, plug your USB device into this blog and transfer your vast wealth of sports performance data so we all can benefit from your repository of performance enhancing knowledge.

    Longboarder,

Never was kicked out of CL’s blog, just thought her blog was stupid. You will see me there again soon, watch for it. Will be Mita Uiato’s biggest fan. She will prove that if she were the setter last year, the Wahine would have gone farther.

  108. haka March 16, 2011 11:15 am

  112. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 11:17 am

What team does not win without excellent coaching. That is something the Wahine Softball team lacks when it comes to hitting.

  113. duffer March 16, 2011 11:17 am

    WSF

With ALL your knowledge, why not do something constructive.

  114. NCAA March 16, 2011 11:18 am

LOL, there he goes again! So you really are Steve!!! STUPID, and that’s not a figure of speech!

You flat out lied when you said you were not Steve. You flat out lied when you said Mafua was not an honorable mention AA. You are just a liar. You have no credibility whatsoever.

  115. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 11:18 am

From what I can gather here, there are only 2 people here that want to see the Wahine Softball team win the CWS.

  116. haka March 16, 2011 11:19 am

  122. haka March 16, 2011 11:22 am

When and where did this occur?

And if we arrange a meeting with the team will you coach them up?

  123. haka March 16, 2011 11:25 am

Who Is This Steve Iser Guy?

Lately there’s been a lot of talk about this relatively unknown 24 year-old online millionaire named Steve Iser who’s exposing his software program Commission Crusher, to the world for a very limited time…

So just who is Steve and what should you know about him?

Simply put, Steve is unlike any other marketer online. With nearly 5 years of marketing online, Steve has gone from College dropout at 20 to millionaire status in less than 3 years.

He’s run the full gamut from promoting affiliate programs, creating info products, software training, sold websites, spoken at marketing conferences, created his own CPA offers and in the process of his career has already helped thousands of people create successful businesses online.

You name it – he’s probably done it. This young turk believes in “paying it forward”. In other wards, his goal with Commission Crusher is to help his 500 new students utilize his new software to create a new group of rich.

His new software program, Commission Crusher, utilizes a simple method that allows you to tap into any market or niche online and find out WHO exactly has the traffic – so you can tap into it and get a piece of the pie for youself.

Needless to say, he’s unlike most of these other “gurus” out there. He does things differently. And he takes a personal interest in helping his customers succeed.

If you want to know more about Commission Crusher and what Steve’s got going on right now, check it out below:

    Ralph & WSF:

Yesterday, WSF was asked who he would pick, and he said Arizona or UCLA because of the coaches.

    WSF stated:

    “ST,

Sorry, as for who I feel will win the College World Series, I am torn between either UCLA, or Arizona, the only reason, boils down to Coaching.”

    “ST,

The only reason I picked 2 teams is that I could not differentiate between the 2 coaches. If either coach were coaching the Wahine, I would be very confident in picking the Wahine.”

(ST Question:) So, if UH hired the Arizona or UCLA coach it would win the College World Series?

    “ST,

    #139, I would say, YES.”

Today, Ralph noted at #39 (UCLA with 11 National Softball championships, and Arizona is second with 8. No SEC team has ever won the Softball National championship.) and

#46 (AL I’m asking WSF which team, UCLA or Arizona, will win the NCAA National Softball Championships this season. Tsai posed the question to him yesterday, pick the winner, and he chose the two teams, but Tsai again asked him to pick one. So I’m continuing the thought, which one WSF. WSF never did answer Tsai’s question, he answers with another question, always evasive.)

To which, WSF replied “Ralph, As I have stated before, cannot choice between the 2 schools, reason being coaches are equal.)

    WSF, really?

UCLA’s coach is a very good coach, but only has 1 National title (of UCLA’s 11 titles) to her credit – last year’s. I’m sure she will get more in the future, but she does not have the credentials of Arizona’s Mike Candrea. Clear to clarify your choice?

    d1shima: I think you’re on to something ….

On another subject: Disappointed that SA’s UH basketball story didn’t include at least a comment from the Portland coach. I’m guessing it was due to the lousy deadline. An opposing coach often offers a perspective that’s refreshing. Thought I’d share this from the warriorinsider.com story. Reveno seems to be a pretty straight-up guy:

“We had a game plan and executed it well enough to get an early lead, but then we kind of backed off, and give them credit – they made adjustments,” Portland coach Eric Reveno said. “They’re very balanced, they have an inside threat and an outside threat, and Miah does a great job of making the other players better. He kind of settled into how we were playing.”

  150. gigi-hawaii March 16, 2011 1:49 pm

Miah will probably go pro, but which sport? Who makes more: an NBA player or an NFL player?

  151. gigi-hawaii March 16, 2011 1:54 pm

Hubby and I were discussing Anthony Carter and the fact he is 36 years old. He played very well for the Knicks. We are so proud of him, because he is a UH alumnus.

  152. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc March 16, 2011 1:54 pm

Who would like our Saturday evening baseball tix? We’ll be at the basketball game and will head on over to The Les afterwards – asusming that the baseball game isn’t over. Send an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com if you’d like them. Be sure to include your (real) name and contact phone number.

We’re also going to be missing Monday’s game as well because I”m having outpatient surgery that morning and won’t be up to going out & about until at least the next day.

Unbelievable basketball game last night – makes me wonder what it would have been like if Hiram and Bobby had been available.

Take a look at the records of the six ticketed sports + softball just this season and think back a year ago. Who had 20-20 foresight and saw how many winning teams we would have at this point? Five out of six ain’t bad at all.

Remember how many dissing comments were made about Gib Arnold on this blog – even before he started working here?

Have no idea who WahineSoftballFan is, but I just skip over his carpola because my time is limited. Would prefer to spend whatever free time I have watching the games than reading his comments. Is this the same guy barred from Cindy Luis’ blog for the attacks on Dani Mafua?

Have several meetings/hearings this afternoon staring in ten minutes, but I am going to try to get to the last couple of innings of the Cleveland State game.

gg = WSF?? thinking da Big Time

  154. Derek March 16, 2011 2:05 pm

So much criticism, so much scrutiny, about the softball program. In that way, that means this Wahine team is big time because people are talking about the program everyday. I guess that’s good right? On the other hand, we are talking about a women’s program that doesn’t charge for admission and does not make a profit for the athletic department. Bottom line, because the Wahine have been winning they are coming out to support them. If they were losing a lot nobody about be talking about them. You have to credit Coolen

for running a good program. I suppose people want him to take the team to the next level which is to win the national championship. People, it is not easy to win the whole enchilada.

    Ask Dave Shoji.

As Al would say, to take the team, any team to the promised land you have to have the “holy grail.” Colt Brennan was such a player, I’d like to think Kanani Danielson is such a player in her final season this year. We don’t have a “holy grail” in softball. The “holy grail” in softball is a dominating pitcher. Somebody like Danielle Lawrie of Washington and Monica Abbot from Tennessee. Until we find somebody like that, it is not realistic to take the team all the way. And even that, we have to surround that “holy grail” with other excellent players to win a champiionship and also get some luck along the way. Can’t we just enjoy the Wahine play every game in their journey this season? One game at a time. Try to get better every day. That’s all anybody can do.

I can just imagine WSF as the head coach. He probably would be yelling at the girls for not winning every game and puking in frustration. That would be counter-productive.

  159. longboarder March 16, 2011 2:14 pm

  160. gigi-hawaii March 16, 2011 2:17 pm

I had an aunt, now deceased, who was that way. She was very contrary-minded. If you said GO, she’d say STOP. Very unpleasant personality. Nobody liked her. In fact, David and I refused to attend her funeral.

  161. AdmrVT March 16, 2011 2:18 pm

#155 – we did have the “holy grail” at one time, but needed a better supporting cast. Remember Brooke Wilkins? Justine Smethhurst was close, but left early.

Wonder when Coach Coolen will get another Australian recruit to pair with Parnaby? Parnaby will be a junior, and Ricketts will be a senior next year. He will needs to start looking for another pitcher besides the MPI pitcher that’s committed.

  162. kama krab March 16, 2011 2:19 pm

    Eh Derek #155,

what a novel idea. One game at a time. Enjoy the journey. Try to get better every day. Wow could things be that easy. I gotta agree but some people feel otherwise. Gotta enjoy the journey cause again this year, it will be a long journey. Just how far is yet to be determined but will the journey happen again. Yes

  164. LizKauai m/ March 16, 2011 2:34 pm

is it usf if they win…first choice.

or is it jan-ken-po with afa if they win?

usf is no slouch they beat portland twice and are 17-14.

al – Keiki Carlos orally committed to UH, but she is a junior and so will walk down the hill to UH for the 2013 season. (about the same distance that Margaret Vakasausau had to go 😀 )

MBB plays USF if they win, otherwise it’s USAFA.

maybe the entire football team should show up saturday to cheer on miah and the mbb team. reserve the four rows in back of the visitors’ bench. give them megaphones, too. borrow some of vili’s war paint.

jump up and down. stomp their feet, do the haka every five minutes from their seats.

    oh yah….

  183. Kazz March 16, 2011 3:21 pm

Liilii is in the same class to come in next season with Jordie Burton and Kayla Wartner.

Liilii can pitch, but we’ve seen local girls have difficulties with pitching at the D1 level out of high school. Kate Robinson pitched, but really PITCHED in her senior season.

Again this is where the amount of games played by California club travel teams overtakes the local players as local club teams do not play as many games as their mainland counterparts.

If I were to venture a guess Liilii would end up competing for 1st base over her tenure here and maybe be developed slowly as a pitcher if she can progress at the D1 level with that.

  184. al March 16, 2011 3:24 pm

al, no, yes, usf is first choice.

no, im not wsf, the juvi-minions on this blogsite stared that rumor bc they all think the same.

Yes, Keiki verbed, but she is a Jr. The Castle recruit is due in the fall and she can smack crackle and pop!

The Dons have first diggs to Hawai’i if they can handle the visiting Vandals tonight (dont forget we are on daylight ST now and 3 hrs behind)….if not, we play a very disciplined Cadet team from the Springs. BTW, USF finished 3rd in their conference, just behind of the Gaels and GonZos. Portland finished 5th.

  186. al March 16, 2011 3:26 pm

I’ll have to check out one of the practices soon, it’s been a while.

I hope that Idaho beats San Fran so UH plays Air Force. I enjoy watching UH play the service academies. Their sportsmanship is a step above any other team. With the military presence in Hawaii, they should get a lot of support.

The Dons are dangerous but AFA can be a problem too if we doze and they get hot. With Miah, he energizes the team. Without him, we are rudderless with a hot and cold outside game. At this level, it doesnt matter who we play. I do hope Gib subs more bc of the pace we have been playing. If we win we will prolly be playing again by Tuesday on the mainland.

I hope we play Santa Clara in the quarters (assuming they win too). Good to have Riley stokin’ the matchups.

    Gigi,

This is softball talk that is NOT hostile or personal.

    Besides I don’t mind ridicule.

    AL,

Jordie Burton played on the same club team as Kelly Majam. Both she and Wartner visted UHM last fall and accompanied the entire team to a Rainbow Wahine Volleyball game against Nevada and then attended the football game against LaTech. They had a lot of fun and truly loved Hawaii, especially Burton who essentially was pretty much already set on coming here before her actual visit I think. While the two attended various functions with the team as a large group I think Majam and Aguirre served as their student-athlete hosts.

Anyway, Burton is a utility player and Wartner is another lefty catcher/1st base player for Coolen. With Kliebenstein only a sophomore next year, I have no clue what she will be competing for, probably to give Robinson, Lum, and Makani competition for 1st base along with Liilii.

Burton COULD end up as a candidate for an infield position, maybe even outfield. We lose Gonzalez at 3rd and Rodriguez at RF. Early GUESSES could see Iwata slide to 3rd opening up SS and leaving Burton to compete for 2nd over Nakao, Pagaduan, and Zamora. RF looks thin though as Mikalemi Tagab-Cruz (out right now with injures and probably wont suit up all year) has very VERY limited time at RF and Brynne Buchanan also having limited time at RF. Rachel Paragas has played LF though, but again, VERY limited time.

I saw a video of Kayla Wartner, it was her ‘demo tape’. Made throws to 2nd from home at an average of 2.1 seconds and throws to 1st at around 1.80-1.90 seconds I believe. Her hitting was hard for me to judge as I am no expert. She was going up against a machine. Wartner does look like a good fielder with minimal risk.

I have not been able to find videos of Burton though, but I am sure they are out there. I was given a link to Wartner’s video.

“Stretch”ing it a little, not quite 5 hours

    …but not just about softball.

#2 son really enjoys playing for his DC.

Turns out the guy is also very successfully coaching the Wildcat softball team.

Linfield Defensive Coordinator Jackson Vaughn is not only one of the best D.C.’s in Divison III football but for the past 10 seasons he has transformed Linfield softball from a solid NWC program into a National Powerhouse.

Very interesting perspectives of coaching the two sports.

Particularly with my work with the defensive line and then to our hitters in softball. Both aspects are very detail oriented where any little flaw can lead to a lack of success on a certain play/swing. With the defensive line we are constantly drilling first step, strike, hand placement, pad level, etc. and with hitting it is our load, timing of the swing, balance, angle of the hands/elbows/bat/core, extension, etc. They are unique to their individual sports but demand the same attention to detail.

“Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!” (1Cor. 9:24)

Yes, win. Duel ’til the death. Compete with all of your might. Give it everything that you’ve got. But if you can’t. I think it’s okay just to be somewhat competitive. No need win everytime. Be competitive and be a good sport. And make sure that we all get along. Oh and let everybody play. Yes, participation. But if some of the players are not that good, then learn how to lose. Learn how to be a good loser. You can’t win all of the time. Sometimes, cannot even win some of the time. And then, there are years when cannot win anytime. At those times, when you cannot win at all. Still make sure that we all get along. Be a leader even when nothing goes right. Yes be a leader. But then again, when that happens, what’s the sense of competing? Might as well just quit and come back another day. Or maybe come back another year. Or if you’re like me, give it up altogether. Collect stamps, learn ceramics, crochet, play the piano, do jigsaw puzzles. But other than that, enjoy life. Does that make any sense?

On working with men and women athletes.

So in my mind is not about guys and girls – it is just about people. In both sports you are going to a variety of athletes: those are highly motivated and driven players, athletes with a lot of talent but average work ethic, and some of those “glue” players that may not play a lot or have big stats but bind the team together with their commitment and team first attitude. So I really don’t look at a player in either sport and see a man or a woman – I just see a person and then from there I really want to know is what kind of character do you have, what kind of work ethic do you have, what is your commitment to excellence, and can I trust you both on and off the field.

Dons departing SFX @ 5:45 am (HST) THURS, should arrive in Honolulu in time for lunch and a practice session at the Stanley later in the day.

USF are strong rebounders (44-24 rebound advantage over Idaho) which led to 26 2nd chance points. 3-4 guys that can shoot deep and they shot 46% from the floor. They commited 24 TOs but are pure muscle and long arms on the inside. They also have bench depth and average about 20 pts a game from their reserves. So, they can wear us down on the boards with their muscle and run the floor with their depth. The tussling in the Idaho match got heated enuff for ejections in the second half. You can bet they will be bumpin’ n pulling on Vander and Amis trying to wear them down.

Coach Gib has been studying their game film and prolly has designed a floor plan. Whatevers. USF has depth, muscle and shooters. We need more players in rotation–against Portland, Gib brought in Thomas for 6 minutes and Barnes for 13. Miah played 40 and Zane 39.

I dont believe we can do that against a physical team such as USF. Thomas needs to get more involved as well as Kurtz and Miles. Should be a great game and challenge for our hometeam. Go Bows!

Is UH playing USF on Saturday night??? I’ll have to get a ticket. USF is my alma mater. Watched them play in the WCC tournament at the Orleans in Vegas.

Glad to hear that the UH Band is going to play at the softball game. I should be able to make the game on Saturday.

    Night, gangees!

Great game, Wahine! And so nice to hear Hawaii 5-0 and more at the park!

  253. hawaiiansun March 16, 2011 8:45 pm

In the first game of the tournament BYU roughed up Cleveland State’s ace Sito for 6 runs in 2 IP. BYU with a 8-0 mercy rule game V in 5.

In her second game, Sito held wahine to 5 hits, 2 runs and KOd 9 in six innings in going the distance before losing 2-1 in a close match.

Good to see Kelly Majam crank her 5th in the second inning.

BYU has struggled this season to keep above .500 and they have played top calber teams with victories over defending NCAA champs UCLA and WAC powerhouse Fresno State.

    In other games today:

    BYU 8-0 over Iona

BYU 8-0 over Clev St in 5.

CAL 10-1 over Iona in 5.

  254. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 8:50 pm

Wahine win but do not look good doing it, really struggled against Cleveland State, the same team that BYU took apart, mercy ruled, in the preceeding game. Wahine’s should watch BYU and California swing the bat, they can learn something by watching those 2 teams.

Coolen still hoping by changing the batting order will cure the Wahine hitting problems. Which only shows he has no clue as to how to fix their hitting.

BYU and California look outstanding, especially California. Right now the Wahine are not even in their league. To watch both teams hit the ball, especially all those line drives, is something to see. None of their hitters have that upper swing that the Wahines have. All the BYU and California hitters swing down thru the ball, not up at the ball. The Wahine seem to have that golfers swing. Good for that sport, but this is softball not golf.

  255. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 8:52 pm

    Hawaiiansun,

If you have seen the BYU and California swing the bat, that is the way the Wahine should be swing the bat. Swing down thru the ball with then a level swing ending, no a looping, golfing swing like the Wahine have. BYU and California hitters when the connect and that is often hit liners all of the the place.

  258. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 8:58 pm

I am truly worried about the BYU, and especially the California games. The Wahine will have to play a perfect game to beat either team. Both Steph, and Kaia will have to pitch no hit ball just to keep the Wahine in the game, cannot let a batter reach 1st base, especially with California.

  259. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 9:01 pm

Oh, by the way, where were all those folks that wanted to talk with me at the softball game. They must have all appeared as ghost, or something. Was waiting all game long. I am starting to find out, alot of people here are more talk then anything else.

  263. Stretch March 16, 2011 9:27 pm

WSF – Seriously, if you have the answers to help the wahine team makes it’s way to a CWS championship, you should talk to Coolen or other coaches. Each of us want them to get to the big time and we support the team in various ways. For people like me who don’t know anything about sports, I try to attend as many games as possible and cheer them on. Others who can afford it support the team financially. For you, with your knowledge of softball, you should support the team by giving them pointers along with cheering them on. All your ranting here about the team’s shortcomings is useless. There is nobody here who can do anything, you are barking up the wrong tree.

  264. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 9:28 pm

You people might think I am a joke, but I will have the last laugh when the Wahine are sitting at home after the WAC season, wondering what happened. The only blame can fall on one person Coolen, no one else. This team is good enough to get to the CWS, if shown how to hit.

  265. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 9:30 pm

The more teams I see, the Wahine are the only team that swings the bat the way they do. No one else, wonder way. If the way they swing the bat is the proper way, every one else would be doing the same thing, but they are not.

  266. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 9:31 pm

    Stretch,

All they have to do is watch the way California, and BYU swing the bats, that simple.

Rashad Green is a 6-4 shooter that will matup with Miah. Yes he is quick. Green scored 16 against the Vandals and dished out 6 assists with 3 TOs. He handles the ball well, plays D, is always around the rim, rebounds (8 against Idaho) and can pick your pocket (3 steals). Green draws fouls bc he penetrates and was 9-9 at the charity line.

Ostrowski will be pressed in their matup as he is giving 7 inches. Green can do it all and will dial-up long distance if you give him space (1-2 outside the arch).

It will be a challenge for Miah. if he handles–he is the real deal in D1A.

USF is a lot tougher on the inside than Portland.

Don’s played sloppy passing game, but rebounded well against Idaho.

Gib will have to be on top of his best coaching effort and a huge key will be the manner in which he can get 8-9 players in the game. USF uses 8-9 players.

This will be a very physical game….fans need to stack the Stanley and raise the roof.

  281. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:08 pm

Looking at the Wahine batting avg., instead of getting better, their batting avg. is getting worse, falling and falling fast. It suppose to be going the other way by this time of year.

  282. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:10 pm

I have met him, have told him, but does he listen, no, thinks his way is the best. If he thinks so, why not patent it, see how many coaches actually follow his way of hitting. No many, if not, none at all.

  283. jm2375 March 16, 2011 10:10 pm

so, the wahine were hitting properly last year but not this year? don’t think it’s something you unlearn so quickly

  284. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:14 pm

Also, Stretch, I am not the only one that has spoken to him about the matter, all have fallen on his deaf ears. We all came away thinking of him the same way, head strong, thinks he knows everything, does not need to listen to any suggestions, A MISTER KNOW IT ALL.

  285. hawaiiansun March 16, 2011 10:19 pm

WSF, many coaches instruct hitters to top the ball in the early going to put the ball in play.

Some, require it all the time. Last year we were topping early and adjusted as eyes became focused. It depends upon ball movement and the particular pitcher. Havent seen too many games this year and missed the game on TV tonite. Alex, JRod and Sharla are pull-hitters and can bust a game wide open. All three see the ball well and when hot can streak.

Melissa and Iwata look for certain pitches. Majam can spray and hits to all fields. She is difficult to figure given all her adversities. Coolen hinted his slugger was at 75%, who knows unless you practice everyday with her. I do know she ran through a make-shift fence chasing a homerun in the Palm Desert Classic and didnt miss an out.

I havent watched Sarah but based on my charts, she is seeing the ball well and making contact.

We are not privy to many things, in particular–batting instruction and hit or take signals.

I have no clue and havent asked. Let Coolen handle, he is the skip and bears credit….or otherwise.

I just chart the counts, popups and BA with runners on base. A strong indicator of a solid bat skill.

I will say that both Stephanie and Parnaby have made noticeable improvement in the circle and the that maybe the storyline for team 2011. Pitch well, play solid D and scratch n claw for wins. We did it against Oklahoma, Longwood and today against Cleveland State.

We’ll see tomorrow how we play against BYU–a very temperamental team.

  286. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:20 pm

    jm2375,

Last year they just wanted to make solid contact, they had more of downward level swing. This year their swing is more like a golfer’s swing. Best way I can put it, the end of their swing last year, pointed to the horizon, this year, it is pointed upward toward the sky. They are the only team that I have seen this year that finishes like that. If that is the proper way to finish a swing all teams would be doing it, but known do, wonder why. Does not take much to change swing like that.

  287. hawaiiansun March 16, 2011 10:27 pm

#278, I have no clue what Gib will do. I just know so goes Green so goes the Dons.

  288. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:27 pm

    Hawaiiansun,

I heed your advice, if you can, watch the BYU, and California game. Especially watch the way both teams swing the bat, take notice on how similar both teams swing, and how different it is to the Wahine bat swing. Let me know what you think, after the Iona game. I will be attending the games at RWSS. So will see your comment after I get home.

  289. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 10:28 pm

  293. huh? March 16, 2011 10:50 pm

It is virtually impossible to swing as the wsf has described unless the pitch is belt high.

First, all swings start at a downward plane as long as the bat is held about shoulder length to start with.

Secondly, if you are swinging at a pitch below the belt your downward plane continues otherwise you won’t make contact. Where does the bat end un after going through the strike zone? Up. Nowhere else but up.

Thirdly, any pitch swung at above the belt goes where when done???? Up. The main thing is that the bathead goes through the hitting zone as close to head to head with the ball as possible. Again only around the belt area.

  294. haka March 16, 2011 10:59 pm

    Great job by the Wahine!

    Go Wahine!

  295. huh? March 16, 2011 10:59 pm

Keep in mind that the trajectory of the softball pitch is typically bottom up or flat. A drop pitch or a changeup typically may have a slight downward trajectory. However, in most cases the ball is flat or rises.

In baseball, 95% of all pitches have a downward trajectory. in a rare case of a sidewinder or submarine pitcher will any pitch actually rise.

However, the bat stroke is similar in both since the bat is still swung in an elliptical curve. Anything else but such is physically impossible to do.

In little league games you often hear a coach or parent shouting, “level swing”. etc. Sorry no such thing. proper batting always starts at the shoulder level and down through the zone.

#291 WSF, sorry, was busy, USF uses 3 guards. Doolen (6-2), Williams (6-0) and Green

(6-4). Two big boys at F, Caloiro (6-8) and Blackwell (6-9). So, they are busy bees. They have a 6-10 center, Diarra who played 17 minutes off the bench and contributed 10 points and 3 boards. They use one other guard to rotate in the mix.

    Re #308

Sure, all points of view are welcome. Always have been. But if you say something and find that people disagree with you, don’t start accusing them of stupidity and mediocrity.

Everyone should feel free to express their opinion. But everyone who voices an opinion must understand that others may disagree with that opinion or ask for clarification.

WSF feels he is absolutely correct. Others fail to see his logic. The easy reaction, which he seemingly always takes, is to say everyone else is stupid. Instead of jumping to that conclusion he should consider #1 whether he is explaining himself clearly and #2 whether his opinion is truly correct.

He says Coolen sucks. I disagree. He says I’m stupid. Again, I disagree. Maybe Coolen really does suck, but WSF has to prove it to me if he wants me to believe it. Telling me I’m stupid doesn’t get it done.

    Hey, there.

I really don’t want to censor the guy because, I’ve been told, he’s not well. And I do know of people that have had health mental-health problems, so I try to be patient. It’s obvious the guy doesn’t have any family or friend support, so he needs an outlet.

The best thing probably would be not to engage in any conversations with anyone whom you would not want to engage in a conversation with. In real life, nobody would want to sit or talk to someone like that, so why would you want to do that here. If you were in a bar, you’d just change seats while making the don’t-serve-anymore-beers sign to the bartender.

I ignore people who I find to be just unhappy and lonely. At first I felt bad, then I figured, ah, can’t change some people. So I ignore ’em and live a much more stressless life.

I imagine, the Tsaikos must want Von Appen back as head football coach. Even tho he lost the majority of his games, the Warriors played hard, that is what only counts right Tsaikos.

  335. Stephen Tsai March 16, 2011 11:53 pm

And still, all I hear is:

“I know a song that will drive you up the wall, drive you up the wall, drive you up the wall. I know a song that will drive you up the wall, drive you up the wall, drive you up the wall. 337. Darren March 16, 2011 11:54 pm

We’ve heard the raves about Sterling Jackson’s running ability. How’s he coming along as the all-important 5th blocker? Alex Green was a great blocker…which was somewhat overshadowed by his great running skills.

    The Tsaiko chant should be:

    BRING BACK VON APPEN!!!!

    BRING BACK VON APPEN!!!!

  339. Lopaka43 March 16, 2011 11:54 pm

    Aloha Tsaiko Ohana,

Some wise words I remember from when I first came to this blog…

The blog will always right itself.

Given the good spirit of the many people who post and lurk here, the aloha spirit will prevail.

I refuse to get pulled into a stupid food fight, and just page down when I see the typical negative, provocative post. I don’t care anymore what the point is that the fight is over because I don’t come here to fight or watch fights.

I come here because the spirit of the Tsaiko community is to make good memories, not to quibble or flame or spread ugliness. This community supports UH sports, its players, its coaches, and its fans and views life as a celebration, not a gotcha exercise.

    Feed a Tsaiko

    Starve a Troll

    Just page on past

    and let him go.

    Esme woosh

  340. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 11:56 pm

    Here is another Tsaiko chant:

    BRING BACK BOB NASH!!!

    BRING BACK BOB NASH!!!

His players played hard. That is all we care about.

  341. Stephen Tsai March 16, 2011 11:57 pm

One of the things that drive me crazy about basketball analysts is when John Smith is on a fast break and the announcer says: “John Smith is thinking to himself, ‘You can’t stop me.'”

Well, unless the announcer was interviewing John Smith during the fast break, he can’t speak for John Smith. Nobody can speak about how another person’s thinking. Not even Kreskin.

  342. WahineSoftballFan March 16, 2011 11:58 pm

    Lopaka43,

With that kind of logic, why fire any coach. Give them all a lifetime coaching contract, we do not care if they have losing records, we will still fill the stands.

  343. Stephen Tsai March 16, 2011 11:59 pm

    Darren:

Sterling Jackson hasn’t had much of a chance to block during drills yet.

Today, the Warriors had a pretty good 9-on-9 session. They pulled the corners and the wideouts. It was strictly in-the-box football. Just pure, hard-nosed power football. Jackson had some nice runs during that session.

  344. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:00 am

Hey, Lopaka, when are you coming back to visit? We need to get some Wahoo tacos.

  345. hawaiiansun March 17, 2011 12:00 am

IDK, ST, somethings WSF says make more sense than some of the babble Ive read.

I do agree, however, anyone who comes to this site for friends, support or outlet, does need their head examined.

  346. Darren March 17, 2011 12:04 am

Oh yeah, OL has 5 positions…6th blocker.

  347. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:04 am

I’m never really sure if our computer clock is accurate, but I’m pretty sure that, yes, it’s March 17th.

    Happy birthday, Esme!!!

  348. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:06 am

    Darren:

I think Joey Iosefa is coming along, too. Shuttling positions was a problem for him, but spending a full semester working at running back has helped. Still, it’s going to be quite interesting when the two running back recruits arrive.

  349. WahineSoftballFan March 17, 2011 12:08 am

One thing is becoming true, the worst the Wahine hitting gets, the more pressure is put on their defense, and must more on both Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby. Big question can both pitchers handle that kind of pressure, without cracking. I mean, having to go out every time out and trying to throw no-hit ball. I have not seen a pitcher yet that can do that. Cause to win, they need to do that.

  350. Darren March 17, 2011 12:10 am

That’s good to hear…competition is always a good thing. We seem to be in a fortunate position to enjoy that…

Another article in the same paper confirms her commitment. She’s also faster than Burton to first base.

  355. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:15 am

    Earvin Sione?

He was coming along, for sure.

But then he had family issues and had to quit the team.

He was originally offered a scholarship, but when he didn’t qualify that first year, I think the offer expired. I believe he was a walk-on at the time he left the team.

  356. hawaiiansun March 17, 2011 12:18 am

wsn, Stephanie and Parnaby dont need to toss no-hitters, just play within themselves and win. Ricketts said she had fun in the close games and relished the challenge. I believe she thrives on it. Look at the game from her perspective–close games demand more focus, intensity, your best comes out. It’s an athletes dream, to be the difference. After the Oklahoma game, I was convinced Ricketts was coming into her own. She has been awesome, not perfect, just a tough competitor with grit.

  357. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:18 am

It’s kind of fun to watch the people who attend football practices.

There’s this one guy who decided he wanted to change careers. He went back to school, became an RN, and now works in home care. (Hospital jobs are tough to get in this economy.) But he’s got UH football in his blood, so he’ll try to attend as many practices as he can. He even scrapes enough bucks to buy season tickets.

  358. Darren March 17, 2011 12:21 am

Expecting a LOT from Paipai this year. Is he on track to deliver? Is he back in the 250 or so range?

  359. WarriorMojo March 17, 2011 12:24 am

I know we have a lot of holes to fill and not much experience to fill with, but nevertheless I’m really excited about the possibilities for the O-line. ST, does Gordy Shaw pretty much have the final word about O-line recruiting, redshirtiing, playing time, etc.?

  360. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:27 am

    Darren:

    Paipai is above 250.

    He’s focusing on being a run-stopper, too.

  361. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 12:29 am

    Mojo:

The coaches are assigned different recruiting areas. But he does have a strong say in the offensive linemen. The main thing they wanted to do, starting a couple of years ago, was to balance out the recruiting classes. You’ll be seeing more multi-year starters on the offensive line in the coming years.

  362. Darren March 17, 2011 12:31 am

    2012 Recruiting Class

Jordan Burton, 5-4 Utility, Mission Hissls HS, San Marcos , CA

Kayla Wartner, 5-6 Lefty C/1B, Escondido HS

Leisha Liilii, 6-0 1B/P, Castle HS

HONOLULU—University of Hawai‘i head softball coach Bob Coolen announced the signing of three prep standouts who will play for the Rainbow Wahine in the spring of 2012. Jordan Burton and Kayla Wartner both out of Escondido, Calif. and Leisha Liilii from Kane‘ohe, O‘ahu all signed National Letters of Intent this past week during the early signing period.

Burton is a 5-4, utility player at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, Calif. where she played outfield, shortstop, third base and pitcher. She’s earned two varsity letters and hit .371 last season with 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts. Burton, who bats left and throws right, was voted 2008 Offensive Player of the Year and earned 2009 Defensive Player of the Year honors. She is a member of the SoCal Breakers club team and previously played for the San Diego Renegades.

“Jojo is an instinctual outfielder who gets good jumps on the ball and has a good arm,” says Coolen.

Wartner is a 5-6, lefty catcher/first baseman out of Escondido High School where she earned three varsity letters in softball. She earned first team all-league honors, second team all-county honors hitting .378 as a junior. She batted .486 this past club season with the San Diego Legacy which finished fifth in regionals.

“Kayla is a very quick left-handed catcher with a strong arm and exceptional bat. She hits for power as the cleanup hitter,” explains Coolen. “She is a very good signal caller behind the plate.”

Liilii is a 6-0 infielder and pitcher out of Castle High School in Kane‘ohe, O‘ahu. Last season, the lefty hit .439 for the Knights with a .975 fielding average. She played for the club team, Pearls 16-under and most recently Team Hawaii under coach Mark Glushenko.

“Leisha is an impact player with the ability to hit the ball for distance. She hits and throws left and will be used at first base and be developed as a pitcher,” says Coolen.

I hope things are working out for Earvin Sione and family…

  365. iwonderwhytheyhateme March 17, 2011 1:05 am

    ST,

Hey now, I know what it’s like to shovel **** so I would do no such disturbing.

But in all seriousness, do you think this upcoming football season is a “total rebuild year” “rebuild/recharge year” or “recharge”?

My personal feeling is that it is more of a total rebuild with all that we lost…aka: Salas =*(. I just hope that this group of newbies will be around for a full 4 years.

  366. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 1:17 am

    I wonder:

I don’t really know the right word to subscribe it. The Warriors will have a lot of new starters, but the players aren’t really new to the program.

There are five new starters on the offensive line, but Clayton Laurel, Brett Leonard and Matagisila Lefiiti are seniors, and Levi Legay will be a junior.

On defense, Kenny Estes will be a fifth-year senior — six, if you consider he grayshirted — and John Hardy-Tuliau probably got as many snaps last year as anyone on defense. Cornerback Mike Edwards and safety Brandon Leslie have a lot of experience.

I wouldn’t rate the schedule as being difficult, so there are a lot of winnable games. It’s a matter of how well the team responds.

  367. iwonderwhytheyhateme March 17, 2011 1:26 am

    ST,

Having a softer schedule might be a good way to ease the “new” guys into the program.

Washington is a sleeper school though. I can see them giving us a hard time if they are on their game. It also seems that the Washington schools and SC are the most consistent when it comes to OOC games. Do you know any reason why we don’t have any UCLA, CAL, or even Oregon games since they do recruit here quite heavily?

I wonder if Tomey will help with scheduling some Arizona home-home series.

  368. iwonderwhytheyhateme March 17, 2011 1:30 am

btw the Pac-12 revealed their logo yesterday apparently. Here is the youtube video…

How nice it must be to have money and a marketing team to blow it on.

Oh yeah, and if you thought it was going to be some awesome new logo…well, its not.

  369. Stephen Tsai March 17, 2011 1:59 am

For some reason, UCLA won’t play UH in football, and it will only play the basketball team in Pauley.

It’s a mystery as to why Cal and Oregon also haven’t been on the schedule in years.

I bet Utah would want to play a home-and-home with UH, but I don’t think UH is going for that. There were harsh words coming out of Salt Lake City for years.

Cal is 1-1 in their last 2 games vs Hawaii ’93 (W@HI) and ’94 (L@CAL)

Good morning Tsaiko Nation, Have been very busy here in Los Angeles but apparently things here have not been well lately. From reading all of wsf/steve posts he certainly knows how to get many here up in arms with his point of view about the wahine softball team. I don’t know the guy personally but recall his negative words about the wahine volleyball player as now he has used his fan base to the softball team. Judging from many of your comments he has a lot of issues and this is his only outlet he can vent his opinion as somehow I feel he is not going any where soon. Ignoring the guy can be difficult as I myself find it hard from the many posters who he has offended even to the point of demanding an apology from Mr. Tsai who is the blog host ! (FUNNY)

I really like this blog but find it difficult to come here because there is so much NEGATIVTY of words going back and forth with wsf/steve. When I read LIZ K frustrated remarks who is truly an Angel then I know there is deep trouble here as the ALOHA has been tarnish for now as I don’t even see Garret’s intelligent posts no longer which was always REFRESHING !

Bighilofan2, ronnie, Mr. A House Sir and my good guy addaknowjoe words are gone as all is here now is a controversial man who ignites bad vibes to his strong opinion. All I can say good folks I PRAY that you can get through all of this as the Warrior Beat is not what it use to be and that has always been POSITIVE support to Hawaii teams with RESPECT and ADMIRATION for each other !

I don’t know when I will be back but to let you know you folks are SUPER and I hope you can solve your problem here in a manner like you always do through wisdom and professional expertise.

    Good Luck !

  393. SteveM March 17, 2011 7:54 am

Delayed posting this last night due to more urgent considerations underway.

On this day (March 16) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … a slight dip to 224 comments on another “no schedule/HF” day and no night shift. las vegas notes again that Long Time UH Fan is MIA. There is discussion of possible new stadium sites and I discover I was not the first person to suggest a football field on a cruise ship (which is technically possible today).

Comment from: ted domay [Visitor] [FloridaTed]

The Power of one, Gigi, shoots down the project. How about if we make the stadium as a giant floating cruise ship, lots of extra revenue and we could bring our own stadium to road games and actually play a home game. We also could get a new bowl game and bring our own fans with us. I think I’m going to take my medicine now…..

    03/16/07 @ 11:54

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

Hey ted domay… did you know the local cruise ship, Pride of Hawaii, has a full size basketball court and some stadium seating on the stern of deck 12? But I think a football field is not possible… until the newer ships with enough beam (that don’t fit in the Panama Canal) come out next decade. Some line might pick up on the idea with all the competition on the mega ships.

Wow…a week long tailgate party for free…and we don’t have to cook and worry about driving home.

    to all the Camellia Carnivores,

we are going to take the video camera with us next time so there is no question as to the activities that took place. i think we can mount that camera on uncle Al’s head, but we’d get too dizzy from the up and down motion….and that was only on the first course of the day, haha.

the lady didn’t bump into me, she bounced into me from Kid’s side of the room, kind of like a pinball machine, and Kid and I were the flippers…wait a minute, i thought that Camellias was dolphin safe, gotta check on that….and true, Joe did eat the papa’a meat, but that could have been a flashback from his small kids dayz with bb buns, geckos and a hibachi….yummy.

it was a fun day, i think we’re on the most wanted to not come back list for the day manager, but it wasn’t me pushing the vegetables through the burner.

and Kid, Al, StevenM got their top plate on the grill changed 3 times to our 1 time….move volume on that side of the table…..easy tiger, don’t start swimming over here just yet.

next time we go guys, can StevenM pick us up in a 24 pax van so we can fit in better with the rest of the crowd….haha

    03/16/07 @ 12:36

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

I only have a 7-pax van so I figure can hold 6 if we squeeze and one is the small guy, Al in the middle seats. bulla cannot sit in the front because the window rolls down and his arms can reach out. 🙂 But cannot hold more than 4 until I get the suspension raised and reinforced.

Yeah, 24 pax van should hold around 12 plus driver…who has one?

    las vegas, Rich,

I am very disappointed that both of you don’t think I can attain the Chapter’s minimum goal requirement of being +200lbs.

I thought with lv’s sumo diet, I surely would attain our official LV Chapter entry requirement. Took wife to Sushi Mon last night to start ‘goal attainment.

OK, if I can’t be an executive chapter officer, how about being the ‘Sgt at Arms’ to police unacceptable behavior at the chapter meals, ah meetings? Promise not to do any running only to the you know where to make more room.

Very interesting suggestions on various locations for stadiums…think an on campus and Ala Wai golf course locations would be great but too costly and politically disruptive of business and residential properties condemnations. As the Asst. Attny Gen. stated, if there is a ‘political will’ to fire all AGs- oops getting into another topic.

Happy St. Patricks(UH) Day to ALL! Green Btls in moderation

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

By making use of this app you will see and send clear HD images of photos in no time. Brighter looking photos are one benefit of this app. It’s not necessary to stress about privacy with this particular app due to the fact only shows content from public albums.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The brand new Zune browser is surpr isingly excellent, but not as very good since the iPod is. It performs effectively, but is notas quickly as Safari, and features a clunkier interface. In the event you sometimes program on by using the internet browser that is not an challenge, but if you??? re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod is larger display and superior browser may perhaps be critical.
