Promise ring

The Warriors received their Hawai‘i Bowl rings during this morning’s team meeting. Coach Mack designed them.  Coach Mack said next time the goal won’t be to earn a bowl berth but to win the bowl game.

Awrite- Brie! I went to the link to see you on TV. Mr. Medeiros is my #1 son’s classmate from Koloa School – 6th grade. They started a band – I got my son a Fender Rhodes 88 but he eventually gave up and Glenn went on to stardom!

Speaking of bands, Ukuleleboi- sans ukulele is in a band competing for BandChamps tomorrow:

  27. Stretch February 27, 2009 4:12 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Not to take anything away from this past season but I think that the team getting “Hawaii Bowl” rings are unnecessary. It takes away from the accomplishment of receiving a ring when it only takes a winning record. I think they should be awarded rings for winning the conference. It is almost like lowering the standard to earn a prize. Just my thoughts.

  28. wafan February 27, 2009 4:12 am

    Hi bhf2!

Nah. Still below freezing but too warm for the lakes to be frozen over. The days are all in the low 40’s! Yahoo!!!

Funniest part is seeing all of my tulips poking their heads out already. In a month or so I should have a very colorful walkway.

  29. wafan February 27, 2009 4:16 am

  33. Garret February 27, 2009 5:42 am

    Stretch,

Regarding your post #27: the lowering of the standards occurred a long time ago when the number of bowl games increased so significantly. I think that each University has a set amount of money that they can spend on gifts to the athletes, so UH would have had the same budget to spend on the 2008 Hawaii Bowl Rings as they had on the Sugar Bowl rings. So, the rings should be very nice…but the accomplishment to get the two rings was quite different.

All UH needs is a .500 record to be guaranteed a bowl spot. It used to be that a team could go 9-3 and miss a bowl game, so things have changed! Basically, UH should have the Hawaii Bowl or a BCS bowl every season…it is hard to imagine that a Mac team wouldn’t make the Hawaii Bowl unless the bottom of the WAC improves significantly.

One thing to consider is that Mac designs nice rings, which is great for the Warriors. However, when you consider the cost per ring and the number of people getting the rings, that is quite a bit of money being spent by UH…

  34. Garret February 27, 2009 5:45 am

    Article from Arkansas.

The University of Central Arkansas Bears will open the 2009 football season with the longest trip in school history, to the island of Oahu.

“Not only is Hawaii paying all expenses of travel, ground transportation, lodging, and meals, but they will send us home with $125,000 guarantee,’ said Teague. “Additionally, the NCAA allows any program to play an extra game who plays Hawaii in the same year as incentive to get schools to travel to the islands. We are using this opportunity to play an additional home game so we are able to garner further revenues through ticket sales. This extra revenue will help our institution and program greatly.’

  35. Garret February 27, 2009 5:49 am

Stanford has to lay off *21* people in their Athletic Department!

Twenty-one staff positions are being eliminated in the Stanford athletic department, which faces an expected $5.4 million shortfall in revenue over the next three years.

No coaching positions were affected, nor any staff members in marketing or media relations. Bowlsby said the school has tried to avoid making any cuts that would affect athletes directly.

The positions being cut, most of which will take effect Monday, were not announced, but it was learned that one of those let go was associate athletic director Scott Schuhmann, who had been at the school nearly two decades.

Part of Stanford’s problem has been the football program’s inability to fill Stanford Stadium.

  36. Garret February 27, 2009 5:49 am

Stanford has the third largest endowment of any university in the country. As of Aug. 31, 2008, its endowment was $17.2 billion. However, Stanford’s endowment has lost approximately $4 billion to $5 billion, or 20 to 30 percent of its value, a university spokesperson said. As a result, all campus units are cutting their budgets by 15 percent.

  37. Garret February 27, 2009 5:51 am

The SEC is against a playoff for college football.

Mike Slive, the commissioner of the SEC since 2002, recently sat with The State’s Seth Emerson to discuss a number of topics. Today, Slive talks about football and the BCS.

QUESTION: Let’s talk about the BCS. I know you all presented the plus-one plan last year. (Taking the top four teams in the BCS, No. 1 would play No. 4, No. 2 would play No. 3 in the semis, with the winners meeting for the national title.) Is that something that you as a conference want to address again?

ANSWER. We thought it was worth moving ahead on and having more serious discussion about it. And it didn’t happen. We’re all set for the next four-year cycle, (and) we have one more year in the current cycle. Whether or not after that there’ll be any discussion, we will see.

Q: Will there ever be a playoff?

A: There isn’t a postseason scenario in the sport of college football that can meet all the needs of everybody. We have exams in December. That’s why we don’t play bowl games until the 28th or 29th.

We don’t want football to become a second-semester sport. It’s a long, hard sport. If they did, all of a sudden they’re going to be behind. So if you respect that, it makes a playoff very difficult.

The regular season, even the most cynical people about the BCS have to recognize that the regular season has become much more significant. It’s always significant here in the Southeast.

And the bowl system is important to us in the SEC. If you change it dramatically, I don’t think you’re going to have bowls that want to be the NIT of college football.

    Re-About the rings

I say it’s their party. Let them do as they please. If a consensus among the players feels that their undeserving of the rings, then let the boys, aka leadership of the team, speak out…not the fans or people on the outside looking in.

Coming from behind with a 1-3 record and having to win must games to make the bowl game says a lot. I don’t see mediocrity. In fact I see a strong desire among the players and coaches to overcome the odds, mainly before the season and during the season.

Assembling a new staff, assembling a new era in Coach Mack career and assembling the players onto the same page is not an easy thing to do.. As how I see it the rings are very emblematic of overcoming a lot of obstacles. So let them have their rings, peacefully and with dignity.

  69. letsgowarriors February 27, 2009 9:09 am

I have visuals of thousands of Japanese fans tearing down the goal post after their team scores their 1st TD! Hundreds of yards in penalties for *excessive* celebrations.

If they embrace football as they did baseball, we could be in store for some increased interest in yet another Western sport. Our hotel industry should be helping promote this effort.

I suppose the rings are better than getting a trophy. Just like youth sports today, many of the kids don’t want trophies. They rather have jackets, sports bags, athletic wear, etc. They don’t even give out MVP trophies anymore because many parents feel slighted since they think their kid(s) deserved to be MVP…sorry, starting to ramble and drool again.

    Garret Post#37.
IMHO, the BCS schools have nothing to gain in a playoff situation. If you are a fringe BCS team in a 16 or 32 team playoff, you are in danger of being bumped by a non-BCS school and giving up a bid payday.
The current system is exclusionary and should be investigated.
I believe a playoff system is plausible, if the playoffs begin immediately after conference play. Let’s suppose a team plays 9 conference games. Eliminate conference playoffs, because they are redundant. During conference play season, two weeks are designated as bye weeks for rest. The top 32 teams would be selected like basketball. Conference champs, top independents and at-large invites are in the playoff. It now takes 5 weeks to decide a national champ. The teams left out of the top 32 fall into two brackets. The brackets can be based on Power, SOS or Student Body size. There are 120 DI schools with football. 4 playoff divisions, each comprised of 32 schools takes care of all teams playing 13 games if losers bracket games are held. This gives the country 4 intriguing championship games to hype and benefit from financially. It also gives the fans matchups not possible under the current system. e.g. USC and Alabama get bounced in round 1, but play in Rd. 2.
Yes, the current BCS schools would be showcased more, but the system allows schools like Utah, BSU, Hawaii and other conferences a chance to crack the bank. Dollars generated from the playoffs would also be tiered to reflect the appeal to the fans. e.g. The top 32 playoffs play for a $20Million Pool, the second 32 $10 Million, $5 Million etc.
The intrigue applies even to a 0 and 9 school who could potentially play its way to a game worth watching in a playoff. Mississippi State could be playing a 3-6 Hawaii team if both ran the table in playoffs.
The top level games would be Bowl sponsored i.e. Rose, Sugar, Tostitos etc. The revenue potential improves as sleeper schools would not have to worry about non-conference games and paying appearance money like we are committing to Arkansas. The Lowest level schools would be matched up by region to keep expenses managable.
Anyway I hope this gets a conversation going and reaches those that can work toward a solution to make college football better.

Thanks for your replies. Homey, the non-conference games would still take place, but now it would be against other conference top teams rather than bottom dwellers. The games could also be played at the higher seed site. The one downside I thought of was the potential elimination of traditional games e.g. Army-Navy, USC v. Notre Dame.

  139. homey ℞ February 27, 2009 10:47 am

I agree with Stretch and D1, awarding a ring for mediocrity lessens the value of a ring…yes the warriors played in the Hawaii bowl but it is shewed to their favor, win 7 and they are in even if there are WAC teams with more wins but no bowl to go to…didn’t they end up at 7-8 after the norte dame game or was it 7-7…

  193. Kekoa February 27, 2009 12:01 pm

    Guys & Moms…

Today in Japan, more than 17,000 players participate in competition for about 400 teams. The biggest number of teams and players compete in college football. Like in US college football, players in Japanese college football have four years of eligibilty. There are two college football leagues, the Kanto League with teams from eastern Japan and the Kansai League with teams from western Japan. Each league has different divisions. The Division I of the Kanto League has two Conferences (A and B). The champions of the two leagues battle for the college championship in the Koshien Bowl in December.

Mebbe JD & Coach M are trying to work a deal to play their Koshien Bowl Champion in our Hawaii Bowl. Would the Grand Poo Bah of NCAA get their panties in a bunch if we did that?

(E Kala Mai Moms, I was just working the visual angle but should have used a male reference like *wedgy* instead)…bad Kekoa!

Nice to see Ronnie perusing the blog again. Shooting for most of the road games again? I’m a lock for Vegas, but everything else is still TBD. Welcome to all the moms foraying into the wild as well!

Watching last night’s volleyball game right now. No tell me the final score, please. 👿

Save yourself and momma!…DO NOT GO IN THERE!…KOSTCO will never let you be seen or heard from again! It is 10 times the crowd they expected.

We may have lost our grandson in the mob surrounding the Hawaiian concession. He had been spotted earlier near the Pizza unit, but that was before they opened up the Mexican food stand with more Chile Colorado, beans and rice plates.

Traffic is horrendous coming in and leaving Kapolei. Traffic lights are out at 2 of the major intersections. It is what we call “ End of the World traffic, like what you see in disaster flicks.

Send (J) James and EMS crew!

just got word that, not surprisingly, the Kostco parking lot has had its first accident and argument….

Seriously?? Are they selling something different from the other ones that half of the island of Oahu needs to be there? Or is it just the “new store” thing….

  202. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 27, 2009 12:40 pm

re: post 27 from stretch. i gotta kinda agree.

when i first saw the pics i was thinking “hey great they finally got their rings!”…and then 1 second later I thought “hey wait a minute…..we didnt win that game….”

nothing to take away from the accomplishment of going to a bowl game but if thats real bling in them rings then thats a lot of money that we are spending. maybe they could have done a “recession special” with custom made hats, polo shirts and jacket or something? i dunno. rings seem to be much IMHO.

It’s the ‘new store’ thing. Plus the free food. Tons of it! The store is actually bigger than any of the others. They really do have a handle on the crowd inside the store because of the way they spread the food units around. Plenny for errybody!

The problem is with the the roads not being completed in the city itself. The traffic lights not working properly. Bozo and his braddah Pachook making all kind wrong way turns inside da parking lot. Blass Pat ovah dere trying fo make Holy Ghost sign to collect for his church of watts happening now…

  217. Stephen Tsai February 27, 2009 1:07 pm

The way it works is every bowl team is entitled to presents from the school and the bowl. For the Sugar Bowl, UH bought each player an iTouch. (The Sugar Bowl gave each Warrior a pleather jackets.)
UH considered giving each player an iPhone, but not every player has AT&T. Plus, the players would have to fork over for the monthly plan.
So they went with rings — all paid for from bowl money.

  255. Kazz February 27, 2009 2:35 pm

    Homey,

I think I recall that Under Armour is not allowed with some members of the military depending on what kind of “action” they see.

The reason being if they encounter a fire and they get burnt the UA material has been known to stick to the flesh. Essentially “melted” into them.

  256. homey ℞ February 27, 2009 2:42 pm

Kazz – Not the military, just the people who live in the Middle East. But I did not know that about the UA material…kinda like an instant skin graft.

  257. Da Punchbowl Kid February 27, 2009 2:44 pm

First James thinks I’m a mommy. Then he thinks that a man gave birth. So sad, some of these crazed-dog, false pordagees now a days. And it’s not even cocktail hour yet. Good thing Damien’s gonna be a Saint soon, so I can pray to him all day long for this confused young man! 😆

    DPK: Good one!! hahahahaha…

  259. Willie February 27, 2009 2:59 pm

Homey, don’t think this applies to only UA material but to Nike, Adidas, etc. form fit synthetics.

I believe this type of man made synthetic material will melt & adhere to the skin when intense high heat is involved.

Simple rule of thumb, synthetics will melt and natural fiber will or may burn. That’s why they say if you are going to fly wear natural fibers if you can.

  260. Da Punchbowl Kid February 27, 2009 3:00 pm

Do other programs give rings to teams in bowl games? There are a LOT of seven-win teams in bowls each year aren’t there? Do they receive rings?

If you think of the ring as being a memento for bowl participation and not as an acknowledgment for their win-loss record, then a commemorative ring doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. IMHO.

  261. Rob25 February 27, 2009 3:00 pm

homey: What, you too good to associate with us for darts? We’ll give you a stool so that you got chance. Maybe you heard that Koakane cheats…ask J(J)!

  262. Buffoman February 27, 2009 3:02 pm

I know that this is a Football driven group but I have to ask about the state of the basketball team. Are they really that bad? They are not performing and I’m wondering if its chemistry amongst them, between them and coaches, whatever…but they really are not good to watch. It’s not the lack of scoring or defense, but it’s like 5 guys just running around until 3 seconds left and someone launches.

And the Mr. Miah issue. If I was JD and I am suffering through a period when no one likes my product enough to fill my arena, I’d already TELL the BB head coach, buddy, give the guy one tryout. Couldn’t be much worse than the guy he’s benched “Mr. Launch from the Parkinglota.”

Miah has a local following, the curious factor that locals all live for, “one local boy going make D-I”. If he can perform, people will go just to see. If he does well, people will keep coming and tell their friends. Fill those empty seats; the ones JD wants to fill to help stop some of that red ink. What’s keeping JD and Bob from just doing the look see? Sometimes, you have to create the excitement, especiallywhen it’s not there and it isn’t.

  267. Da Punchbowl Kid February 27, 2009 3:14 pm

No, no homey. We all know I’m not worthy…

  268. Willie February 27, 2009 3:14 pm

Buffoman, your Miah point makes a lot of sense and it can’t hurt.

Guard play is “weak”. Nitoto is not a point guard, but I really like his quickness, intensity & defense. Hiram does not have foot speed, he panicks a lot, why does he dribble into a corner during presses & then gives up the dribble. Lutu lacks experience. The Parking Lot Launcher has had “one” aka “uno” aka “ichi”. . .hot game, other than that I don’t know how he gets to play.

They got no big man, ala Reggie Cross, Milton Werts, etc.

  269. Kazz February 27, 2009 3:16 pm

I had a friend who is a chef and obviously is always around an open flame. He asked me where I bought my UA skull cap (like a beanie but thinner UA heatgear material) as he was tired of wearing his shef hat or hairnet.

I know this is a sports blog, but how many of us really stick to the topic? We’re among friends and I know there are a few Tsaikos who are Kamehameha Schools alums and I just wanted to get a feel for their thoughts or anyones for that matter on the issue of the trustees getting a 69% pay raise at a time when the schools endowment lost $1.7 billion in these tough economic times. Because of this the students at Kamehameha Maui have just been told there will be no summer programs and other extracurricular activities as well as no funds for substitute teachers. They have to turn off the AC, lights during school hours just to name a few cost cutting strategies and then to hear that the trustees have been approved of a pay raise is beyond ridiculous. What do these people do anyway to deserve more money. They definitely didn’t prevent the billion dollar losses.
Have some integrity and not take any pay raises. Even better if they decide to have a pay cut and give to the students. Auwe!!!

I remember ST had a picture of the legendary coach Chuck Mills on the blog last offseason. The Japanese version of the Heisman trophy is known as the Mills Trophy in his honor. Coach Mills is regarded as the father of modern Japanese football. According to wikipedia he now lives in Hawaii.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Mills

Check out these great quotes from his Wikipedia page:

“Some pray for wisdom, my wisdom comes in praying for big, fast tackles.”

“When it comes to football, God is prejudiced – toward big, fast kids.”

“My halftime speeches always went a great deal better when I had better players than the other guy.”

“Losing? Stop the pre-game prayer or you might make atheists out of the kids.”

    Wafan and Hoohiki,

UPDATE (per Advertiser update at 4:45pm)

Citing sluggish economy in which the value of the trust’s assets declined by more than $1.7 billion, board members of the $7.7 billion estate said they would not take increase in compensation until their financial conditions improves.

Earlier today, state Probate Judge Colleen Hirai approved a plan that will increase the maximum pay for the charitable trust’s board members from $97,500 a year to $165,000 a year.

The board’s chairman will be entitled to a maximum of $207,000 a year, which is a 72 percent increase from the current maximum of $120,000 a year.

The pay increase would have been the first for the trustees in about a decade.

The Kamehameha Schools is a charitable trust founded by the 1883 will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop to educate children of native Hawaiian ancestry.

I don’t care how long they didn’t get a raise. Certain people in “power” in that upper bracket get no symapthy from “US”.

Besides, I would like to hear Judge Hirai’s justification of such an increase in the first place.

  311. FloridaTed February 27, 2009 5:34 pm

Kamehameha, nothing much ever changes. Character is a rare and precious commodity. Cutting student needs and taking a 69% pay raise is beyond outrageous.

  312. TOM February 27, 2009 5:34 pm

Judge Sam King had proposed that the Bishop Estate Trust be converted to a charitable corporation. Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Punahou, among others, have directors elected by their respective alumni, who are serving as such without compensation. Those charitable corporations, as you might suspect, have quite a bit of money in its endowment- in the billions. Not as much as Bishop Estate but a huge amount. As long as you have a trust, you have trustees who get appointed (political) and get paid.

The directors of those charitable trust serve because of the love of their institutions.

  313. TOM February 27, 2009 5:36 pm

    sorry – meant charitable corporations.

  314. wafan February 27, 2009 5:50 pm

Are the trustees obligated to accept the money? Or are they like the professional and life-time politicians?

Also, I think Royce Pollard is going to do well this season. Now, if he’d stop wearing his metallic red shirt …

  317. FloridaTed February 27, 2009 6:19 pm

Didn’t the Estate have a big broohaha a few years back, with some of them doing jail time? Ego-trips going berserk? Wasn’t it the Advertiser that broke open the story? Don’t remember the names off hand.

  318. FloridaTed February 27, 2009 6:22 pm

    Tsai-Meister,

I see a lot of very good position battles brewing for this spring, even beyond the ones you’ve mentioned. We might end up with some serious depth at plenty positions, at least I hope so.

  319. TOM February 27, 2009 6:49 pm

    FLORIDA TED:

No jail time because the powers-that-be decided that such action would too expensive and “beyond what the public wanted”. This was Earl Anzai, the Atty General when Margary Bronster failed to get Senate approval for reappointment.

One of the trustees did get jail time but it was not because of the actions as trustee but for tax fraud.

The Advertiser was given the story but had more profile than courage. It was the Star Bulletin that broke the story of the corrupt actions of the (former) trustees.

You might look at a book called “Broken Trust” written by Judge Sam King and Randy Roth (law prof at UH). Very readable and was called “a textbook lesson in charitable trust mismanagement”.

  320. TOM February 27, 2009 6:53 pm

WAFAN: re: #314. No, they are not obligated to take the money. (neither are teachers! (smile)) but they will. They just announced that they will not take the raise and in fact will reduce their present pay by 10%. Of course $160,000+ is more than 4-times than a beginning teacher.

The $160k is, after 25 years of teaching with multiple certifications, over 3x what I gross each year.

I think it is easier to be happy with $160k each year. At least it would be easier to deal with inflation if one were to live frugally and conservatively. The last raise I got was two years ago (just under 4%) — the first one in 5 years. Yay!

But then, according to one of my all time favorite cartoons, I knew the job was dangerous when I took it!

I think most people are playing darts, with the rest watching Nā Wahine. 🙁

Or maybe some are doing math homework. Work now, I can rest tomorrow. With Relay for Life next week, and midterms going on now, I’m getting run down. Almost had two panic attacks today, just from fatigue. Worst part is when the muscles constrict, you have a harder time breathing, and the body (or worse, your body and mind) realizing that makes it tense up even more. What a vicious cycle, I don’t wish this on anyone. Hope everyone learns from the lessons I’ve learned and decides to take it easy sometimes.

  336. Kekoa February 27, 2009 7:30 pm

Hoohiki ~ Thanks for bringing up this important topic. It has always been one near and dear to my heart.

First of all, when there is this huge amount of money involved, it becomes a real temptation for people who are entrusted with it.

As in the previous group of Trustees, they also started with a very lucrative salary. It seems as if whenever they are in a position to vote themselves an incredible amount of money over a short period of time, the temptation is saved. If we let it happen, then we have slipped back into that same abyss.

As I’m suggesting, it would seem that a total reorganization of the Bishop Estate is necessary. How do we get this message thru to these people.

  337. wafan February 27, 2009 7:33 pm

    Jason . . .

I am very comfortable in my home because I have my thermostat set at 75. My NG heater sure is nice! Just need to turn up the humidifier a bit more.

Outside is very different story! At least it is warmer tonight at right around 30. A whole lot warmer than the past nights where it got down to the mid-20’s.

Hey, it is a way better than the midwest or Northeast.

  338. Jason February 27, 2009 7:36 pm

We don’t have a PE requirement. In fact, we have a KLS limit, you can only take so many KLS credits (9, I think?).

They say breath deeply — that makes things worse for me. They say exercise — that makes things worse, although a short walk is usually fine. That’s what I did today, just left class and went for a walk to Paradise Palms, got myself a large Calm tea. My friend asked me, “You left class for tea? 😀

Oh, and wafan — you know those low odor dry erase markers? They still get me high. I’m surprised my brain doesn’t resemble a pincushion. Then again, I hate chalk. Hello, PowerPoint presentations! 😛

Since the new trustees took over, seemed like there was at least a lot more going on — more preschools, more DOE assistance, the opening of Maui and Big Island campuses. I am for a total reorganization of Bishop Estate and Kamehameha Schools, top to bottom. I am not a toe nail Hawaiian, but in some sense I am a toe nail Hawaiian. Someday my great grand children, and now some of my grandchildren, are toe nail Hawaiians. that sketch is not what aggravates me about the Kam Schoolz. The higher than thou attitude of the culture of the upper echelon of the schoolz, resulting in pitting Hawaiians against Hawaiians, and denigrating Hawaiian children that make mistakes unless they have a good lawyer, that is what irritates me. what also irritates me is pandering to those who hijack the school system for money for staying away from the touchy subjects, trying to let things slide and paying the administration for seemingly doing a good job in keeping the lid on the unspoken, at the expense of the populace, that is what is irritating in the current situation.

Therefore I am promoting the result that extinguishes the school and trust into the State. Sorry, but that is how I feel. And I speak as a DHHL lessee. I would rather the State system, the Koakane, run the system. At least I know he means all of us well. There is a lot of fat being trimmed at the top of the heap by people who do not mean the Hawaiian community well, they only mean themselves well. And that is a fact!

True, we run into the dishonest among the State officials. The last minute heisting of the thought process; that is exactly what Linda Lingle did in the recent/ongoing Supreme Court case when she directed Mr. Bennett to change the State’s position; plus, the person who argued for OHA was more interested in himself and his pretty boy personna than in the case and the case result. Good for him that the Supremes handed him his can of beezwax! Too bad for us that the end result is the natives get to take it in the butt >>> again.

  344. Da Punchbowl Kid February 27, 2009 8:04 pm

The trustees have deferred a HUGE pay increase and have instead taken a 10% pay cut. Anything wrong with that?

    Nuff said.

I Mua Kamehameha. ‘E ola mau na pua ‘o Pauahi.

  345. Wayne Ol February 27, 2009 8:08 pm

Rings are nice for a reward that something done was successful. I’m not sure about a 7-7 record and getting thumped in the bowl game merits a ring. If they had beaten Notre Dame I would feel much better about it.
Calling a spade a spade this Warrior 2008 edition was very inconsistent, had too many turnovers, too many penalties, and had a lot of problems in the red zone, the special teams weren’t good, and the place kicking wasn’t up to the ice man’s standards compared to 07. In a nutshell, discipline was lacking and the coaching wasn’t up to par (i.e. the offensive line was overmatched). Like I said, this was a very mediocre team and it did not live up to it’s pre-season billing. But, enjoy the rings!!!
I hope 2009 will be better.

  346. FloridaTed February 27, 2009 8:14 pm

    Kekoa,

Back in the early eighties I was a very strong advocate of putting all day pre-schools in all the Hawaiian communities. Every Hawaiian child should be in pre-school through the Estate.

That was the will of the Princess, ALL Hawaiian children, not only a small elite. That trust was broken long ago.

Many problems could have been avoided, if the trust to the Hawaiian people would have been carried out faithfully from the beginning.

I am all for everyone making a decent wage. I am all for the KamehamehaSchools being a shining beacon for all things Hawaiian.
And I am grateful for the many benefits that have been bestowed on many Hawaiians by Bishop Estate and Kamehameha Schools.

But when a young person makes a mistake, they get a second chance in the DOE. Not so at Kamehameha Schools. Unless the child gets a lawyer. Which promotes the lawyering expenses at Kamehameha Schools and Bishop Estate. I would rather the money be spent in more hiring of assistant teachers that are sent into the State school system, like the charter schools and regular schools, to assist students attain a higher level of academic achievement. the schools can use the extra books, the extra curricular tours, the stuff that they dole out at KS all the time. only the high achievers get to go to KS, and not all the high achievers. spread the $$ around to the kanaka kids in the other schools. in the end, we’re all toenail Hawaiians. thats what happens when you become a State.

I think it’s good that you care, Ted.

The Kamehameha Schools’ story is a very complicated one. The bottom line is that they typically aren’t given enough credit these days for the many positive things they accomplish through out the community. However, there are far too many people who are very quick to judge all Hawaiian institutions harshly these days. That bothers me.

Is there room for improvement at Kamehameha? Certainly. Ask any trustee and they’ll probably agree with that thought. But I believe this group of trustees are sincere in their efforts to expand the legacy and provide more help to the broader community, both Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian. Are they going to please everyone? Again, probably not.

It’s difficult for an institution like the Kamehameha Schools to be all things to all people, even more so to all Hawaiians. Just look at the range of opinions within the Hawaiian community regarding the issues of other Hawaiian institutions like DHHL, OHA, the Akaka bill and sovereignty. Everyone has an opinion, and in the end, all should be heard and considered.

In this instance, for whatever reasons, the trustees have made the right call. We need to acknowledge that.

    ggdomc-
I think I understand your concerns. I too feel that young people should be allowed to make mistakes. The important thing is that they learn from them.

Miami is really trying to get bigger at the C and G positions, going after players that are bigger than Samson. I’m a little worried about what this means for Samson after his contract is up (I think that will be after this season). The latest player they signed is a C/G who is bigger than Samson (Miami’s coaches have clearly stated they want bigger and more physical players at C/G)…and Miami’s head coach was his OL coach at Dallas. Samson is listed at 6’3″, 300 pounds and this guy is 6’5″, 310 pounds. Miami is also looking to draft a center this year.

I remember when Miami’s new RB coach signed a FB that he used to coach at KC…and how Reagan was eventually cut from the team in favor of that FB. The sad thing is that FB was eventually cut too…

Berger would provide the Dolphins with depth and insurance in case Donald Thomas and/or Justin Smiley need more time to recover from their injuries. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Berger was originally a seventh-round draft pick by the Panthers in 2005. He was then signed by the Dolphins but he spent most of his two seasons in Miami riding a stationary bicycle in practice due to a foot injury. He played three games.

Over the next few years in Dallas he played four games but he was able to build a relationship with Dolphins coach Tony Sparano – who was his O-line coach in Dallas.

The Dolphins clearly saw enough quality young centers at the Scouting Combine like Alex Mack and Max Unger to pass on Brown.

Two scientists have been in a fierce competition to see who can make the best bionic suit for American soldiers. The scientist in Utah had a big advantage because he had Raytheon backing his group, but the Berkeley scientist just got Lockheed to back his group. It is amazing that these bionic suits can enable a soldier to carry up to 200 pounds without much effort and run 10 mph:

WAFAN: Our State is poor! Starting teachers get around $40,000.

Without trying to be controversial, and I do support KHS’ position, Princess Pauahi’s will provides for “devote a portion of each year’s income to the support and education of orphans, and others in indigent circumstances, giving preference to Hawaiians of pure or part aboriginal blood…”.

If memory serves, only a small portion of the income had been and is used for support and education. Each trustee had his own kuleana which is contrary to trust law but they entrusted her with the educational aspects of the estate. But at least the new ones, even though they are not spending a better portion of the income to education, have expanded the school to the Outer Islands. But the emphasis still seems to be on “college-prep” though it is dual tracked (i.e. vocational).

Maybe those that are upset with the salaries of the trustees should talk to Judge Walter Heen who had been pushing for a charitable corporation to run the school and handle the assets. At least the voice of the Hawaiians could be more clearly heard than leaving it to the five trustees.

I find it very interesting that so many of the highly rated recruits out of high school actually ran the 40-yard dash *slower* when they went to the NFL combine. Four times as many players got slower in college than the number that got faster!

The main difference in the college and pro games? By all accounts, speed — even with their size, the pros are always alleged to be significantly faster than even the most elite college players.

The results of Rivals’ comparison of top prospects’ performances at the NFL Combine to their recruiting combines as high school seniors are of some interest, then, largely because very, very few of the 50-plus players surveyed actually improved their straight-ahead speed while in school; about four times as many players in the survey, across every position, actually tested as at least somewhat slower in the 40-yard dash last weekend than they did as 17/18-year-olds. Penn State’s Derrick Williams, the top-rated prospect in the country in 2005, went from a blistering 4.31 at a Nike camp in Charlottesville, Va., in 2004, to a pedestrian 4.64 in Indianapolis, and was only listed as five pounds heavier at the combine. Chase Daniel — who, it’s easy to forget after his run ‘n gun years, was as dangerous as a runner early in his career at Missouri as he was as a passer — went from a sleek 4.5 in 2004 to a plodding 4.92 a little less than five years later. No one improved by nearly that wide of a margin, if they improved at all.

  383. McLovin February 27, 2009 9:47 pm

I totally agree with Stretch. Since when did players get a ring for just “showing up”. If they win then cool give um a ring. But a ring for just making it into the bowl game, come on. Do the losers of the super bowl get super bowl rings? I don’t think so. I do respect all the hard work the players put in the make it to the Hawaii Bowl, but I think the money could be put to better use. (i.e. help out players who have to pay to eat at training table etc, etc_

  384. Garret February 27, 2009 9:47 pm

    Stretch,

Very interesting news about the changes at Na Koa! I was about to send a check to be at the team or captain level, but if they are going to change things around then I should probably wait until they update their website.

I’d like to thank the companies that wanted to advertise at my warriorquotes blog. I just set up that blog to archive stuff about the Warriors so that it would be easy for me and others to look up stuff in the future. I was surprised when companies wanted a link to their website or a mention of their stuff in a blog post. All of that money is being donated back to Hawaii–it isn’t my money.

Kind of interesting that $160k in salary is causing such a stir now when ten years ago the trustees were taking home $800k to $1.2m and only got criticized because Lokelani ticked people off.

  388. Garret February 27, 2009 10:16 pm

Berger was brought in to compete with starter Samson Satele for the starting center job. At 6-5 and 310 pounds, he more closely fits the mold of what the Dolphins want anchoring the middle of their offensive line. The Dolphins will likely add a draft pick to that center competition as well.

Berger also will provide competition at right guard for Donald Thomas, the rookie who won the job last year but was injured in the season-opener and went on injured reserve.

A little perspective here: Berger had earned the starting job with the Dolphins in 2005 when he suffered a foot injury that basically cost him the job. The following year the Dolphins needed to make a roster move and cut Berger to put him on the practice squad but he was claimed by the Cowboys. He’s been a backup in Dallas since.

Peters, lokelani, etc made a boatload of money with goldsachs. i truly believed they earned their millions, they made bishop trust value skyrocket. under the table, in their pocket, legal or illegal, their job was to bring in money and that they did. current staff needs to show that they can work it too, so far they lost money. relevance

  391. WarriorMojo February 27, 2009 11:03 pm

Don’t really want to get into this because this is the wrong forum and I’m not really that emotionally invested in the issue, but Takabuki was the money man at KSBE. He’s the one who made it rain. The others, particularly Peters and Lokelani, were more known for their incredibly poor investments. In fact weren’t both of them ultimately alleged to have been involved in incredibly poor if not fraudulent investments?

To Coach Mack and the players,

As I wrote earlier this morning I’m behind you guys all the way on receiving the rings. I envy how special this moment can be, especially having one crafted from the hands of the coach.

What sorrows me is the contempt of a few saying how undeserving the team is in receiving the rings. For them I’ll say a short Prayer tonight (shortly) with some added admonishments.

Reserved for Coach Mack and the players is a long Prayer, nice and full of blessings of well wishes to the returnees, newcomers and future Warrior alumni that their future paths are safe and successful.

I’ll thank the Lord for allowing me to witness a thoughtful and caring coach giving his players rings. The act in itself is symbolic of a lot of things.

The ring is a keepsake that the players will treasure for the rest of their lives, something that can’t be said about an iPod. Something that can’t be said about a ring purchased across the counter, for this ring is special made by the coach. And it should be very significant for the players.

Forty, fifty years from now material things will come and go, ups and downs in life will come and go for these players. But the one thing they’ll always have are these rings. And this is very special for the players, and prayerfully I wish some that are expressing opposition to this will see.

  394. FloridaTed February 28, 2009 12:49 am

    roysan16,

I have to agree with you on the rings. In 2008 the players and coaches righted a sinking ship, which was abandoned by the former captain and, against all odds, layed the ground work for future success.

Let them have their rings, they persevered.

  395. bighilofan2 February 28, 2009 12:53 am

    hiya Tsaikos everywhere.

    roysan16
Coach had to make the tough call earlier on when trying to motivate his players, build up unity, chemistry. he made the call on the ring. he keeps his word. you can tell the character of the man by what he does in action, not words. I back your thoughts 1000% on the ring thing. he earned it, his first year. not easy to bring in a whole new staff and recruit on a month’s notice. I have relearned the word Patience because of Coach. Mike Smith, Chris Tormey and Gordie Shaw and how Coach recruited this year, he’s earned my respect.

    nuff said.

howzit howzit. agree with your thoughts. also agree with WM and the idea put forth by Judge Sam King. to make that happen, imo would have to be a petition by the BE trust to change. but first, there’d have to be a public education. a suit to bust the trust would put da public trust idea onto da front burner. always gonna get pros and cons within any institution and how its run.

  404. McLovin February 28, 2009 5:52 pm

    Roysan16,

Don’t worry I say a prayer for you and your misguided insight. Okay so the rings were paid with money that was supposed to be for iphones or whatever. My point is that awarding a ring that says “Hawaii Bowl 2008” implies that they won the Hawaii Bowl. Again do the runner-ups of any bowl games including the Super Bowl get awarded rings with the bowl game on it. I don’t think so. It would be hilarious if Notre Dame did not make Hawaii Bowl 2008 rings for their players. So the losers are walking around with the Bowl game ring. If Mack made some kind of promise then maybe the ring should have just said Hawaii Football 2008 or something like that without mentioning the Hawaii Bowl.

  405. UNDERFLOOR HEATING March 24, 2009 2:03 am
