Professor Rolo

UH offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich will be one of the featured speakers Monday at the American Football Coaches Association’s convention in Dallas. Rolovich speak on quarterbacks in a buzz session. The convention is a Who’s Who gathering of college coaches from across the nation. It also is considered an unofficial job fair for coaches.

The 2011 Warrior volleyball team will be introduced in the so-called Volleyfest tonight following the UH basketball game in the Stan Sheriff Center.

    Twelt!

Terrible business about the Congresswoman. Yes, there have always been kooks, but the media and folks like Ms. Palin have done a good job of getting folks riled up enough to act on their craziness. Its really sad.

    Congrats to Rolo.

wafan – Red Robin – yummmm.

  14. al January 8, 2011 10:23 am

    ahouse…i don’t get it?

you are so dissatisfied with rolo.

even though we passed for 5,500 yards.

we also ran for 1,500 yards.

how many teams will gain 7,000 yards in a season.

for the record…for every two passing plays we ran once.

which means that for every rush we average 5 yards

but for every pass attempt(not catch) we average 9 yards.

hmmmm. you want to run more?

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid January 8, 2011 10:25 am

Rolo’s star is definitely on the rise. Any wannaba coach poachers beware — Rolo is spoken for!

  17. al January 8, 2011 10:32 am

dpk…if any college head coach tries to recruit rolo in the future we should just have him call ahouse so he can tell em how ineffective our offense is and what a poor job rolo is doing.

    Morning!

  21. Derek January 8, 2011 11:07 am

To help Moniz get better in the off season Rolo needs to work on his decision-making, football IQ, and getting better at throwing different types of passes. Some passes require zip, some require some touch, some needs to be lobbed, some short-armed, some thrown in front of his body. Whatever. I saw sometimes at the Hawaii Bowl where he started to run and then decided to throw at the last minute which resulted in incompletions where if he ran he would have easily pick up the first down on at least 2 occasions.

There is nothing wrong with throwing 66% of the time or for that matter throwing 80% of the time. The bottom line is if we are scoring and the percentage of time we are scoring touchdowns. Hey, if we score TDs in the red zone 90% of the time throwing let’s do it. The percentages say that the closer you get to the end zone the more difficult to throw the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. In the past, we have had problems running the ball inside the 5 yard line. Bottom line, we have to get better w/ play calling and execution. This is why a lot of practice comes into play. Some plays just work better in close. Rolovich just has to find the right blend of plays and the right players to execute it to score. On deep passes I noticed Moniz overthrew a lot when our receivers were really open. He’s touch to get the right trajectory and arch needs work.

This why Colt Brennan was great. I always had the feeling that whenever we had the ball we would score. It didn’t happen at the Sugar Bowl but it wasn’t his fault. Our offensive line couldn’t block Georgia’s defensive ends. And that should be a lesson, we have to get at least 3, maybe 4 new offensive line starters for next season. I’m confident Coach Shaw will get the “hogs” ready to play come 9/3 against Colorado.

Congrats to Coach Rolo… Get that respect and bring back the confidence to get UH to the next level!

Ovation is playing Firefly episodes all day. Life is good.

  27. A-House January 8, 2011 12:16 pm

    al:

    #11 – lament? never!!

#14 – perhaps the stats look good; to some outstanding – the idea is to make the game more interesting by varying plays; not only pass, pass, pass. Yes I know many will disagree because great #s are posted, but even college football, it’s an entertainment – for some, it’s their entire life.

#17 – is Rolo doing a “poor job” – heck, I’d be glad to answer any questions and provide my personal opinion – I’d be glad to tell them that during the 2010 Hawaii Bowl, UH OC called only 2 “play option” plays – rest was all pass; defense was able to shut down the vaunted Warrior run-n-shoot offense by switching D-coverage by showing a zone pass defense and then, just before the ball was snapped, went into man pass defense. For a team ranked 117th on pass defense, Tulsa sure did a fantastic job of sticking like glue to all receivers and nullfying the mighty run-n-shoot in front of another national TV audience.

One thing I learned is my Statistics class at UH, anyone at any time can make any statistic favor their position; thus, they structure questions that will automatically support their intended outcome.

  28. Hank January 8, 2011 12:22 pm

…When you have the number 1 ranked quarterback and people STILL have complaints…i guess it’ll never, ever…ever going to be enough.

…tired of reading the same ole “he gotta do this…gotta do that” over and over and over….and over….

    …love Moniz…we’re lucky to have him…

  29. Annoddah Dave January 8, 2011 12:24 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

I think that Coach Rolovich would be the first to admit that he needs more seasoning and experience at OC and calling plays before taking on another job. He has the best incubator here with UH, especially with Coach Davis here to mentor him. Leadership skills do not equate to proficiency in technical skills. That comes with experience and study.

  30. LizKauai (macbook) January 8, 2011 12:26 pm

I love Moniz and all those wearing Warrior unis and you are right… I have never played high school football!

I was impressed with the quickness and speed of Kentucky’s runnng backs, but it was not enough to cover Pitt who had a well balanced run and pass and play option schemes.

oh, al, i forgot – a team can have the worst stats, but it they win the game, is that not what all that matters?

during field training exercises, our 3 star general who was adamant on the 9 principles of war, stated, in the “war room”, that this was the most important principles to win – being a smart ass, I said, Sir if I violate one or more princples of war and WIN that battle, would you “punish me”? No answer. Of course, latter, my 1 star general called me in and chewed my ass, but privately agreed with me. No wonder I was never considered for “general officer rank”!!!

  34. A-House January 8, 2011 12:31 pm

heck, there i go again – blowing the sentence – it should read “would not sign”

  35. Garret January 8, 2011 12:42 pm

    A-House,

One thing to consider is that UH pays its assistant coaches far less than many other schools. UH isn’t close to the level that BSU pays its assistants, and BSU pays much less than most SEC/Big10/Big12 schools…which is why their assistants have been leaving so often now.

Complain all you want about Rolo, you HAVE to keep in mind that UH will have a *very* hard time finding a replacement with the manini money they will pay. Given the choice of a promising young coach who has shown he can learn and grow with the offense and a 100th-choice coach who has no other options but to take a low-paying job at UH, I’ll stick with Rolo.

Someday some big-budget school will come calling for Rolo. Many schools pay their QB coach far more than UH pays its offensive coordinator! When UH loses Rolo, you are going to be *very* unhappy with the options UH has to replace him…I predict that you will then appreciate what UH has in a low-cost Rolo.

  36. d1島 January 8, 2011 12:46 pm

    “play option”? 😕

  37. Garret January 8, 2011 12:50 pm

Those practices at Palo Verde High School (I think that was the school that UH practiced at) in Vegas might pay off in a HUGE way…the 6th rated all-purpose back in the country is from Palo Verde and he has UH in his top 5.

His top 5: Cal, SDSU, U-Dub, Nevada, UH.

    http://sports.ap.org/college-football/story?id=772035222604413c84ca9b297e2f23e1

  38. Garret January 8, 2011 12:53 pm

Rolo is getting paid 1/2 to 1/10 of what other D-IA offensive coordinators are making and he’s delivering with the offense’s performance on the field. I really cannot think of many options for UH to replace Rolo when the big-budget schools come around in a year or two. UH might have to run a whole different offense…which could mean years of struggles until the recruiting matches the new system.

  48. iwonderwhytheyhate January 8, 2011 1:31 pm

Rolovich isn’t going anywhere unless the money is doubled…which means it probably has to come from some big money school.

You can count on one hand the number of offenses at BCS schools that run anything even close to what Hawaii runs. SMU duh, maybe the old T-Tech and wherever the heck Leach goes, Maryland if they wanted Jones.

Other than that nobody really wants to have a Run and Shoot coordinator…Texas took Harsin, someone who I’ve posted in the past is one of the hottest coordinators out there.

Schools who can recruit top notch talent are going to be doing more of a Texas/Florida/Oklahoma type offense read: A real running game, not necessarily power run game but more balanced.

Rest easy warrior nation, Rolo isn’t going anywhere soon.

Mrs. A House and Midori 7, I was cleaning my office and I found a nike medium black Hawaii

Warrior T. Shirt. I had a box sent to me by JD for my Wooten children. Gave all out except for this one as I want you or your daughter to have it. I immediately thought the both of you as you ladies are so very nice and you can wear small / medium clothing. I will get it out asap as I want to add more to the package. You folks are such a GREAT family that I think of you often and enjoy time spent at Vegas and New Orleans. Very HONORED to have met you and appreciate ALL that you have done for me in support. Take care and will see you in Vegas as Mr. A House I will upgrade your leather wear !

Concerning Rolo’s replacement… if we ever have to find another, and we stick with the RnS, we could end up with another former QB who may have gone through our system.

Spent some time clicking on apps on Facebook, in between messing with our stupid car.

Got a 2002 Lincoln LS (V8), and I’ve been going crazy trying to track where I might have a short. Narrowed it down to the dashboard area, but haven’t been able to pinpoint which wire is giving me grief yet. Plus, it’s freezing outside, even in my garage. Wish it was heated!

Hope 2011 has been good to you all so far!

…But will they beat Atlanta or Chicago next week?

  60. Derek January 8, 2011 3:17 pm

Give Rolovich some rope. Jesus, he’s only 1 year removed from being an OC and before that QB coach. The guy is learning, probably every day he’s looking at film and trying to get ideas that will work for our offense. He’s trying to teach all the quarterbacks of which we have six (Moniz, Austin, Graves, Nielson, Shutter, and Spain). He has to prepare the back up and the third and fourth string guys because on any play, the starter can go down. That’s the nature of the game. I think we are fortunate to have him. The offense was better last year than the year before. I would expect that this year we will be good again. That’s not to say everybody can’t improve. Sometimes, people can improve by leaps and bounds, sometimes not so much. Moniz was a walk-on, but he had some potential after Fresno City College. He’s not tall, does not have a rocket arm. But he’s learned a lot and have had on field experience for 1 1/2 years after Alexander got hurt. I have to believe that his Senior year will be the best. With only him and Manley at New Mexico St. the only starting QBs returning in the WAC I have to believe also that Hawaii will be the favorite to win the WAC this year. Hawaii’s team is what it is, a good team trying to get at the next level. We are not there yet. Until we can beat AQ schools with a winning record we will not be respected nationally. I am sure the coaches are aware of this and are trying to work towards this goal.

Recruiting outstanding players is priority #1. Let’s go Warriors!

  61. wafan January 8, 2011 3:29 pm

They need another qb and should have released Hasselbeck a few years ago. Carroll has a hard time with the other teams because the other teams are also paid professionals unlike when he was at USC.

  65. iwonderwhytheyhate January 8, 2011 4:01 pm

I hope my comments didn’t get interpreted as being against Rolovich here in Hawaii.

I feel the system we run here works for the most part and does wut its supposed to do.

Everyone said that the trip option couldn’t work in the BCS conferences and GT did a pretty good job at making that a moot point…then again they didn’t have a great season this year…so who knows about the sustainability of that system.

June Jones said that this system makes average QB’s look good. Since we don’t get the kind of talent that many of the the BCS schools get maybe this system fits us the best.

If we could recruit like Utah or TCU then we could run systems that utilize a more balanced attack with better athletes…but we don’t, so we can’t. Personally I enjoy a more balanced attack, but we aren’t going to get recruits who could run the spread option or USC pro-style any time soon.

Rolovich is good at running this system, fortunately for us its not a system that big times schools would consider running any time soon.

  66. iwonderwhytheyhate January 8, 2011 4:03 pm

one thing i wish i could see the Warriors do is to have different formations. with our offense you won’t see a power I in the redzone or a pro-set or 2 TE etc….I always had fun watching the 1000000000 formations that Boise had.

UH is not respected in the college football world. People like UH now more than ever, but in the larger scheme of things, they still look at UH as being somewhat of a gimmick.

Unless offered a head coaching position at some smaller school, I don’t see Rolo leaving a pretty good OC gig. Not too many folks on the D-1 level trying to run the R&S. His options are quite limited. But offered a head coaching position? For a little bit more money? I think Rolo would leave.

    BIK

  73. Goin2Play January 8, 2011 5:05 pm

Okay….I gotta weigh in on the coaching!!!

Although the coaching is okay, I hope they do some serious improvement! Tulsa had plays that complimented another play or was set up by a similar play..etc. Without Kealoha and Bradley (mainly Kealoha), Moniz had only 2 receivers he’s worked with consistently to be on the same page.

In addition, I know we’ve been doing pretty good with our offense…but, I’d like to see us take more advantage of the opposing team’s tendancies. They basically should scout themselves and anticipate what opposing teams will come with…etc.

With reference to the Special Teams Coaching!!! We’ve been lacking in this area for a long time, not only this year! Why Salas hasn’t been able to return many punt returns and why the punt returner always has someone in his face as soon as he receives the punt has to do with COACHING!!! The players aren’t being taught how to block the gunners and/or you need to double up the gunners like they do in the NFL…which only proves how IMPORTANT it is to block the gunners!

Re: 74, it could be that the coaching staff did not want Salas to return punts because of the risk of injuries but he had good hands and could handle the punts without fumbling it and would be safe fair-catching them.

Of course the same would apply to Kealoha and one can see that using him on the return team resulted in losing a key weapon in our attack. Without him at Boise and the Tulsa game left Salas somewhat exposed.

#78 – Even more reason to double the gunners….poor coaching! Also, they didn’t tell Salas to fair catch every time, it was his decision made after seeing the space he had to make a return. I know UH Coaches don’t put a huge emphasis on punt returns because they feel the offense will score, but its like a fast ball pitcher only going with his fast ball…if you have more than a fast ball you’re more effective!!!

  83. Goin2Play January 8, 2011 6:39 pm

Football has 3 Phrases. Boise State clearly scouts and plans for their oppositions Special Teams weaknesses and exploits them with blocked kicks, fakes, punting away from great returners, rugby punthing the ball to get better rolls, pooch punting by the quarterback to create bad field position near the end zone…etc.

Attended my first womens basketball game tonight, bought a ticket for the mens game. Kazzz, Ralph and I sat behined the bench. Out of the two games that I watched I would have paid to see the women, they played a very good game, IMHO #21 Keisha Kanekoa is the best player on the team, she plays with heart the whole game either on the court or the bench she is into the game. They had a few chances to win it buit came up short, but nothing to hang their heads for. As far as the mens team, they have a lot over come.

  99. Pomai January 8, 2011 11:59 pm

ST started but I didn’t see him hit the ball except for one time and he scored a point, then he played it smart and pulled himself, best go out as a winner. LOL

Stanford is probably going to take Roman if continuity is what they want.

Peterson is smart, real smart, a heck of a coach that is leaps and bounds beyond most we see in college ball today…but i don’t know how he would translate his system into the players that Harbaugh has recruited….

If Stanford is looking for long term success and won’t mind waiting 2-4 years for Peterson to gather his junk together to take care of bizzness then I think it would be a great hire.

Would Harsin then come back to take the Boise HC job if offered?…

  104. iwonderwhytheyhate January 9, 2011 12:46 am

    #78,

I was listening to Bobby 1420 last week and he said “according to the Hawaii coach who has been doing this for 30 or so years, there is NO INCREASED RISK OF INJURY ON PUNT RETURNS TO RETURNERS”..

Begs te question…Why do we ALWAYS fair catch them if thats the case?

Bobby disagreed with this comment and I do as well.

Changes are needed at special teams…we need to find someone who is in there to return punts when there is the option to do so and not just to fair catch em all the time….but what changes can we make? hmmm

  105. PowderPuff January 9, 2011 12:50 am

Well, what a pair of disastrous games for the men’s team…yikes. C’mon ‘Bows…hope you guys can pull it together. I didn’t see much of the game as I was busy talking story to my friends but saw Kazz, Ralph and HiFlyer and was standing a few feet away from them on the concourse yelling at them, but they were too into the game. 🙂

    howzit.

announcing a change for the special teams coach to me means you going try fo do wat you stay tellin, an das to take care of da gunnaz, cuz dat is da prolem. pick on da 2 best gunnaz on da odda team, and by da time day get to da third return, the mindset gonna change on both teams. but first, you gotta slam da gunnaz

this past year, we neva slam no gunnaz. das my thought fo da entire season. not that Coach Tormey neva had da manpower. he coulda took charge for ONE punt return series and put da guyz he wanted on da field, anytime, he coulda done dat.

my real feeling is that our coaches are all really nice guyz, an day no like make anykine to dare fellow coaches. i say, to get to da next level as a team, first you gotta get past da luzzah mentality.

dat is da national perception. dat is my perception.

btw, i’m not an expert in the RnS so maybe someone can answer this.

we run a pass oriented spread offense where we NEVER put the QB under center…

with the pistol formation and the RnS 4 wides, is there a way to put the QB under center, and run some play action utilizing the short routes, bubble screens etc that we usually run?…or does not having a TE there for protection make it hard for the QB?

  124. Winzler January 9, 2011 2:30 am

Big Hilo ~ we missed your razz-matazz passion for screaming at the officials tonite.

Gun-funnit man! These guys needed to be run outta da SSC on a rail!!

Sure the team blew the game. Shots were off the mark. Turnovers, careless fouls, and missed opportunities were rampant. Bad officiating only made things worse. It caused the guys to lose focus, and subsequently losing ground and the game.

One minute they were down 10…the next, it was 15. Then the officials made a bonehead call and all of a sudden…we’re down 20! Grrr…game.

we run a pass oriented spread offense where we NEVER put the QB under center…

with the pistol formation and the RnS 4 wides, is there a way to put the QB under center, and run some play action utilizing the short routes, bubble screens etc that we usually run?…or does not having a TE there for protection make it hard for the QB?

    iwonderwhytheyhate,

Actually, UH *does* use the QB under center at times in short yardage situations, especially near the goal line. UH did that under JJ and I remember UH doing that under Rolo. To me, the most effective scoring play for UH when they are near the goal line has been the QB option–quickly running to the edge instead of running up the middle where the D is stacked.

Mouse Davis tried the QB under center for the base offense once he went to Portland State. They led D-IAA in sacks and they found that the extra second or two lost because the QB was slower to make reads due to having to backpeddle was too costly, so Mouse went back to the shotgun.

UH wasted an entire Spring Practice in its first year under Ron Lee trying to get the base offense to run from under center, then UH had to go back to the shotgun. The disadvantages of running the run-and-shoot under center has been demonstrated by Mouse and Ron Lee. JJ, Mouse, and Rolo all seem to agree that the offense runs best from the shotgun…

  128. Garret January 9, 2011 3:50 am

If you are talking about whether or not UH can use a TE, that is another issue…

UH basically used Salas as a TE on some plays this season. That is one advantage of having a bigger receiver at slot–more effective blocking.

UH used Reagan Mauia as a TE when they faced Purdue’s Anthony Spencer. Spencer was leading the NCAA in sacks (last time I checked he was still in the NFL with the Cowboys), but Mauia CRUSHED him play after play and Spencer was *not* effective at getting pressure on Colt that entire game.

JJ has used a TE for the past several years. He actually had his TE block and catch passes. That was effective for his offense because they ran more, but one *huge* disadvantage of using a TE is that you take away a faster receiver. Taking away a slot would be crazy in UH’s offense since Moniz passes so effectively to the slots (both Salas and Pilares had amazing seasons). Taking away a speedy outside receiver means that you cannot stretch the field as well…though, if Moniz isn’t going to be throwing deep too much, the safeties will be cheating up the field anyway.

  129. Garret January 9, 2011 3:57 am

Very, very interesting article by Ferd about local recruiting. With the 2012 class deeper than the 2011 class, maybe it is good that UH has more scholarships to give out in 2012.

Paul Honda’s article listed the offers to local recruits, which is always a nice thing to see in his summaries. The article sure didn’t sound positive about UH and Juda Parker, but hopefully he doesn’t like his upcoming visits when he compares them to the UH visit in December.

I wish that UH was mentioned more in Honda’s article, aside from the 2 Maui players that I knew were walk-on possibilities…

  130. Garret January 9, 2011 4:11 am

When the rumors came out about Stanford wanting Petersen, wasn’t Petersen in Hawaii having his home visit with K.T. Tuumalo? I think that Petersen going to Stanford isn’t going to happen, but if it did it would be HORRIBLE for UH:

    1. If BSU loses Petersen, I don’t think they will be the top 5 team that the MWC needs to get AQ status. BSU needs to win the MWC in 2011 to boost the MWC’s AQ status chances, but losing their head coach, offensive coordinator, and WR coach (who was in line to be their offensive coordinator) would really hurt their chances in 2011. It doesn’t matter if their coaching staff gets things together by 2012…UH needs them to win big in 2011.

    2. Petersen has been able to convince a top local recruit 2 years in a row to commit to BSU. If he can recruit Hawaii high school players to *Boise*, what could he do at Stanford? Palo Alto is beautiful and has a *huge* Hawaii club and is a very comfortable place for students from Hawaii. Stanford hasn’t recruited in Hawaii under Harbaugh, but under Petersen they could scoop a lot of the top of every Hawaii high school class.

I repeat, Petersen can sell local prospects on *Boise*. Give him the Pac-12, Stanford’s academics, and the Bay Area location and he would be unstoppable in recruiting in Hawaii.

  131. Garret January 9, 2011 4:14 am

If SDSU’s coach takes the Michigan job, SDSU’s commits will be up for grabs and UH should go after some of their excellent recruiting class. Hoke already told SDSU quite some time ago that he’ll take the Michigan job if offered. It is a nice “coincidence” for Hoke that he hasn’t signed his contract extension…he’ll wait until Michigan picks their new coach. If Hoke signed his extension, he would have to pay a $1.5 million buyout if he leaves, but since he hasn’t signed, his buyout is $1 million if he leaves.

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/07/agent-sdsus-hoke-cant-say-about-michigan/

I wish that UH was mentioned more in Honda’s article, aside from the 2 Maui players that I knew were walk-on possibilities…

It seems like two Big Sky schools were mentioned far more frequently.

Is that an indication, as “ferd” seems to imply in his article, of the overall quality of this class? Or is it a question of the amount of effort that’s been exerted into the exercise to this point?

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    Garret

    D1

    question for Coach Mack.

why is it that Petersen is able to recruit Hawaii’s top football recruits to *Boise*

2 years in a row? Academics? Spuds? Weight Room? Blue Turf? Prettier girls?

Better TV exposure? Playing in front of the *Boise* faithful?? hmmm… what am i missing?

  152. Bighilofan2 January 9, 2011 7:49 am

    recruiting.

Coach Mack, sit down with Jim Donovan and Rockne Freitas.

you all have 2 trhings in common, UH. Hawaii football fans.

We’d all have the same goal. making UH Football a proud product to project our image.

    that helps everything, including recruiting.

ask dem two guys fo help. and da kinda help to ask for could not print here.

and do public photo up with past UH greats now, befo recruitin finished. I would definitely put past UH greats in da picture. day’d make Coach Mack look good.

cua in da picture between Petersen and McMakin, McMakin making Petersen look good and nut da odda way around.

    jmho.

Only BCS schools that Juda Parker was offered was from Baylor and Colorado. And he has yet to visit Colorado and doesn’t appear he has a visit scheduled with Baylor. Oregon State is the only school he has yet to visit (this week) that hasn’t made him an offer. At least according to Rivals.

    Good morning Tom ~

Big Hilo is right. My Civic duty requires me to take immediate action when I witness a crime in progress.

The request should have included a SWAT team to come in. I believe Deadly Force would apply in this case. The entire crew of Bozo’s shoulda been taken out with the trash.

Game writers tend to spend more time developing the story, unless its something like Unreal Tournament. Movies usually have a scene or a certain stunt they want to pull off, and can make a story about that. That said, however, some games/comic books translate very well into film – just look at watchmen.
