Warriors land lineman, score high on APR

The Warriors’ 2014 recruiting class continues to build following a pledge from  lineman Samuela “Sammy” Lauaki of Los Angeles’ Cathedral High.

Lauaki is 6 feet 4 and 250 pounds. At Cathedral, he is used as an offensive tackle and defensive lineman.

“He’s a very coachable kid, very talented,” said Chris Maumalanga, a former NFL player who now coaches at Cathedral. “He’s very humble, but hard-working at the same time.”

Maumalanga said if Lauaki gains a lot more weight, he would project as an offensive tackle in college. If he is in the 270-280 range, “he can play anywhere on the d-line,” Maumalanga said.

“He has really great feet and great hands,” Maumalanga said. “More than anything, he’s super coachable.”

The Warriors received a score of 962 on the APR, which is above the national average of 949 for football. It also was the program’s highest score in seven years. .

Linebacker Julian Gener, who dropped six pounds, is an example of the new intensive offseason conditioning program.

UH coach Norm Chow confirmed that quarterback Justin Alo is no longer with the Warriors. Alo is expected to transfer to a junior college.

Alo signed with the Warriors in 2011, and joined the team in January 2012. He moved to receiver, but did not play in 2012 because of an arm injury. He moved back to quarterback this past spring. Alo exited spring training as the No. 5 quarterback behind Taylor Graham, Sean Schroeder, Jeremy Higgins and Ikaika Woolsey.

Setter Max Wechsung and do-everything-player Harrison Phelps will not be playing for the volleyball Warriors this coming academic year.

There are four finalist (from a pool of more than two dozen applicants) for the volleyball coaching job vacated when Sean Carney resigned to pursue business opportunities. A decision will not be reached until this summer.

Wow, must be slow day. That’s terrific news that we have yet another Polynesian young man wanting to join the team. I am hoping that fans will support the team and fill the stadium. We all love winners that’s for sure, but this is our team; the only one in the middle of the Pacific. We really need to support not just football but all our teams.

    Lauaki has family in Hawaii.

I think he was born here.

Wow the Warriors are building their own Poly Platoon!

  9. richfromoc June 11, 2013 8:10 am

One thing I noticed that separates this coaching staff from the prior ones is that we are getting commitments a lot earlier. This helps in projecting out future needs and strategically identifying areas of weaknesses and strengths.

  10. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2013 8:12 am

It’s nice UH has a connection with Maumalanga.

Welcome to the ohana, Mr. Lauaki!

Encouraged by Apples comments yesterday of his desire to get into a possible PAC-16 scenario. He compared our academics and athletics favorably to current Pac12 schools.

  17. Warriorfan June 11, 2013 9:42 am

Wow why is wechsung and Phelps, two potential starters not playing? are they redshirting or just leaving?

  18. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2013 9:48 am

As I understand it, both decided not to play volleyball anymore.

  19. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2013 9:48 am

Also, both are still enrolled at UH.

  20. Shoko June 11, 2013 10:09 am

It’s reported that UH “Men’s basketball had a four-year APR of 951 and was at 885 for 2011-’12.”

    Is that correct?

Reason I ask is that the NCAA is reporting a multi-year APR of 951 in 2011-12. Or is it 951 for 2011-12 and 885 for 2012-13?

Best to them as students – will they receive scholarship $$ if they do this?

  28. Shoko June 11, 2013 10:44 am

Just came across this bit of info. Ronnie Stevens, who originally signed to play with Hawaii, but had to go the JC route apparently signed with Nevada. Doesn’t look like he put up much stats at the JC level, however, was good enough to be picked up by the Wolf Pack since they’re hurting for post players as was evident last season.

#8 Poly Platoon, I like that.

    Thanks Poly Mom.

  31. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 11, 2013 10:58 am

Sucks but not entirely surprising to read that season ticket sales are down nearly 5,000 the same time last year.

Hopefully the upcoming push by UHAD will get them to renew.

  32. Shoko June 11, 2013 11:11 am

If you compare season tickets purchased to other members in the conference, I think UH still up there in terms of ticket revenue.

  33. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2013 11:12 am

    IWWTHM:

Actually, it’s the type of story that runs every year.

Season-ticket renewals can’t grow. If you sold 100 tickets last year, you can’t have 101 renewals. At best, it stays the same. But usually because of people who die, move or just aren’t interested anymore, the renewals go down.

A more realistic tally won’t be known until after new-ticket sales are completed.

Also, technically the students will have purchased season tickets as part of the student-activity fee.

But, yeah, too early to tell.

  34. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2013 11:15 am

I think UH might consider bringing in a QB to run the scout team.

The four QBs are in contention for playing time. Plus, Ewaliko will be competing as a receiver.

  35. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 11, 2013 11:29 am

    ST,

That is true. I’m not sure how previous years renewals stacked up but -5,000 seems pretty high. I’m hoping that they do some marketing blitz to get the new sales up.

This seasons schedule is made up of good home games, and if the team clicks well, we could get to the 6 w’s and a bowl. Maybe people will see the value there.

  36. d1shima June 11, 2013 11:42 am

    Great Morning All!

Nice job on the APR, Coach Chow.

    Good morning everyone!

    Great news on the APR.

Best of luck to Justin Alo!

  39. A-joe June 11, 2013 11:55 am

If it wasn’t for this blog, I’d have no idea what’s going on with the football team.

It’s hard to sell a product no one knows about. Even worse when the sale of the product is based on the previous year’s performance.

UH athletics department and their PR crew need to start pounding the pavement and spread the word. Start Twitter and Instagram accounts. Do daily videos about the players and coaches. Send out weekly press releases. Get businesses more involved with helping UH other than just giving money. Schedule coaches to give more speaking engagements throughout the state. Promote, implement and encourage a travel package deal (introduced by Stretch) to accommodate neighbor island fans to attend games. Use cross promotions- get the UH band to play in the malls across the state.

Do anything positive instead of releasing info that sales are down. Sounds like peddling for a handout to avoid imminent doom.

  40. gobows June 11, 2013 11:57 am

  42. Shoko June 11, 2013 12:16 pm

  43. Warrior Dave June 11, 2013 12:21 pm

    #34 ST,

Seriously??? If all 4 QB’s see action this season, that must mean that Graham got I injured. Not a good thought…

Do you feel that with the different offenses the other teams use, it would be best to bring in a Scout QB since the 4 in camp ate not able to duplicate the other team? So does that the mean the scout QB gets to practice the entire year but it doesn’t prepare him for the UH offense?

  44. Shoko June 11, 2013 12:39 pm

Chow is using a four-quarterback system (all four on the field at the same time) in hopes of confusing opposing defenses.

  45. BigWave96744 June 11, 2013 12:57 pm

Stephen, is Lauaki related to John Wa’a, whose mom’s maiden name is Lauaki?

  46. Shoko June 11, 2013 1:17 pm

    More Gerry Blakes.

“Freshman guard Gerry Blakes (Inglewood Morningside) was named first team All-Foothill Conference and first team All-California. This year, Blakes led the Conference in points per game with 16.5, finishing 20th in SoCal in points per game. He had 429 total points, shot 84% from the free throw line, and grabbed 186 total boards.”

Southern Cal Finals against Mt. SAC. Apparently had a tough time against Allen and Nevels.

” The Mounties defense was particularly brutal on freshman guard Gerry Blakes (Inglewood Morningside) who was an uncharacteristically 1 for 12 from the field, including 0 for 5 from beyond the arc in the loss.”

    And that’s it for today!

  53. Stephen Tsai June 11, 2013 5:42 pm

While I think better marketing and promoting will be helpful, it eventually comes down to the product. If the team wins and is exciting, then more fans will turn out.

Then again, I remember the wait-and-see approach during the 2006 season. By the times many casual fans realized the phenomenon of that offense, it was too late.

Awesome news on the APR… Chow is really getting these guys in the right direction off the field. That’s outstanding.

Very excited to see Lauaki turns into in the 2014 season and beyond. He’ll most like redshirt this year to get bigger, but he appears to be a nice building block for the future.

Lastly, good luck to Alo on his next destination. Glad to hear he’s trying to get some playing time somewhere. He’ll never see the field at UH based on his position on the depth chart.
